New paper in Nature suggests the IPCC model might be significantly wrong -- on the low side.

No wonder this thread is sinking,,,,it didnt go over 100 today,,,,its not suppose to go over 100 tomorrow,,,,,in fact, its not suppose to go over 100 for the next 5 days or more and we're in the middle of July in Texas,,,,,boy, this sure does destroy the narrative of this thread but please carry on with all this bullshit,,,,,
Wow we had a tropical storm and a hurricane cool us down and we're still on pace for more than the average of 100 degree days per year taken only over the last 30 years, not even counting the way cooler years before the mid 90s.

Count your goddamn blessings. It's mid-July and no 100s in sight in the short term outlook. And, little if any rain expected to convolute that data

That long term forecast is probably bullshit just like it was when they were predicting two weeks of 95 and below after Alberto and then it shot up to 99-102 a week later. NWS has us up to 98-99 by Tuesday when that ridge that's killing the west starts moving in and they're the only forecast to pay attention to.

Manny used to get so mad when I said models were most likely wrong, either underestimating or overestimating the effects of increasing CO2. Still too early to tell what scenario is correct. Only thing certain is we're gonna find out.

What a dumb fuck you are.
Climate change states that we will get more erratic temperature changes with the AVERAGE GLOBAL TEMPERATURE RISING at a rate that is accelerated. This is exactly what has happened. So when we get extraordinarily low temps in a Winter you will once again need to take a banana pie and smash it into your face. Because you don’t understand numbers or trends numbers show. You don’t know what rates of change mean. You don’t know the difference between the words climate and weather. And so much more…

It's amazing that we had a tropical storm strike then a hurricane that cooled us down for ~3 weeks and we're still going to have an above average number of days of 100, even significantly above average for taking that average over only the last 30 years which is the hottest 30 year stretch.

An increase in tropical storms is the new normal. Most of it the past decade has gone up the Eastern Seaboard.

And with today we have hit our average for days of 100+ per year, taken over the last 30 years (the hottest 30 on record). In a year where we got hit by a tropical storm that cooled us for a couple of weeks and had a hurricane cool us down for nearly a month. And we'll probably still make it onto that leaderboard above given this heat dome will be burning us up at least another two weeks.

We got hit by a tropical storm in June and a near miss with a hurricane in July that completely changed the weather pattern for 3 weeks and we still finished with significantly above the average of 100 degree days per year, with a real chance of sliding into the top 10. It was like a best case scenario and we still are going to end up with a pretty hot summer anyways.

Looks like we could hit 100 tomorrow but then lots of 90s in the 14-day forecast after. Then again the 14-day isn't all that accurate when we're not stuck under a heat dome, so still possible we make the top 10 for most days of 100+, especially if we hit 100 tomorrow.

Plant cover across the Antarctic peninsula has soared more than tenfold over the last few decades, as the climate crisis heats up the icy continent.
Analysis of satellite data found there was less than one sq kilometre of vegetation in 1986 but there was almost 12km2 of green cover by 2021. The spread of the plants, mostly mosses, has accelerated since 2016, the researchers found.

Shell and Exxon knew in the 1970s, then lied their asses off to protect their ROI.
Harvard’s scientists used established Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (https://www.ipcc.ch/) statistical techniques to test the performance of Exxon’s models. They found that, depending on the metric used, 63-83 percent of the global warming projections reported by Exxon scientists were consistent with actual temperatures over time. Moreover, the corporation’s own projections had an average “skill score” of 72 percent, plus or minus 6 percent, with the highest scoring 99 percent. A skill score relates to how well a forecast compares to what happens in real life. For comparison, NASA scientist James Hansen’s global warming predictions presented to the U.S. Congress in 1988 had scores from 38 to 66 percent.
https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/01.10-exxon_graf_dinamit2213.jpgSummary of all global warming projections reported by ExxonMobil scientists in internal documents between 1977 and 2003 (gray lines), superimposed on historically observed temperature change (red). Solid gray lines indicate global warming projections modeled by ExxonMobil scientists themselves; dashed gray lines indicate projections internally reproduced by ExxonMobil scientists from third-party sources. Shades of gray scale with model start dates, from earliest (1977: lightest) to latest (2003: darkest). The researchers report that Exxon scientists correctly dismissed the possibility of a coming ice age, accurately predicted that human-caused global warming would first be detectable in the year 2000, plus or minus five years, and reasonably estimated how much CO2 would lead to dangerous warming.
Exxon scientists predicted global warming with 'shocking skill and accuracy,' Harvard researchers say — Harvard Gazette (https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2023/01/harvard-led-analysis-finds-exxonmobil-internal-research-accurately-predicted-climate-change/)

historically unprecedented
The National Weather Service defines “extremely critical” fire weather as sustained winds in excess of 30 mph and relative humidity of less than 10% in the presence of drought conditions and temperatures warmer than 70 degrees. This is the first time (https://bsky.app/profile/edwardsanthonyb.bsky.social/post/3lf56ggmquk2d) in history these criteria have been met anywhere in the United States during the month of January.
In preparation, Southern California Edison told more than 400,000 households (https://www.sfchronicle.com/california-wildfires/article/edison-power-shutoffs-20018981.php)—about 15% of homes and businesses across the region—to prepare for preemptive power outages.

the native American penchant for setting regular brushfires tended to suppress large, destructive wildfires; the colonizing Spanish put an end to that, adding fuel to the hazard
Less well understood in the old days was the essential dependence of the dominant vegetation of the Santa Monicas—chamise chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and live oak woodland—upon this cycle of wildfire. Decades of research (especially at the San Dimas Experimental Forest in the San Gabriel Mountains) have given late-twentieth-century science vivid insights into the complex and ultimately beneficial role of fire in recycling nutrients and ensuring seed germination in Southern California’s various pyrophytic flora. Research has also established the overwhelming importance of biomass accumulation rather than ignition frequency in regulating fire destructiveness. As Richard Minnich, the world authority on chaparral brushfire, emphasizes: “Fuel, not ignitions, causes fire. You can send an arsonist to Death Valley and he’ll never be arrested.”https://longreads.com/2018/12/04/the-case-for-letting-malibu-burn/

Ironically windmills existed on farms long before the advent of wind turbines.
Also, fossil fuel use kills exponentially more birds than wind turbines kill, and conservatives never took issue with solar power while they were investing in the technologies that drove it. It's disingenuous to claim solar and wind power generation are dirtier or more harmful than fossil fuel use.

Water in hydrants would have helped
There was water in hydrants, there just wasn't enough given the magnitude of the fire. This really isn't very complicated.
The water system used to fight the Palisades fire in Los Angeles buckled under the demands of what turned out to be the most destructive fire in city history, with some hydrants running dry as they were overstressed without assistance from firefighting aircraft for hours early Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power was pumping from aqueducts and groundwater into the system, but demand was so high that it wasn’t enough to refill three 1-million gallon tanks in hilly Pacific Palisades that help pressurize hydrants for the neighborhood. Many went dry as at least 1,000 buildings were engulfed in flames.
The dry hydrants prompted a swirl of criticism on social media, including from President-elect Donald Trump, against Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s water management policies.
But state and local officials and experts forcefully hit back, saying critics were connecting unrelated issues and spreading false information during a crisis. State water distribution choices were not behind the hydrant problems, they said, nor was a lack of overall supply in the region.
Janisse Quiñones, head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, said later at a news conference that 3 million gallons of water were available when the Palisades fire started but the demand was four times greater than “we’ve ever seen in the system.”
Hydrants are designed for fighting fires at one or two houses at a time, not hundreds, Quiñones said, and refilling the tanks also requires asking fire departments to pause firefighting efforts. Mayor Bass said 20% of hydrants went dry.

LAFD chief flagged budget cut impact on wildfire response last month
With fires raging across Los Angeles County, news that the Los Angeles Fire Department chief pushed back on recent fire department budget cuts is resurfacing online.
LAFD Fire Chief Kristin Crowley wrote in a memo Dec. 4, 2024, that “the reduction ... has severely limited the department’s capacity to prepare for, train for, and respond to large-scale emergencies, including wildfires.”
Crowley’s memo followed news of a nearly $18 million fire department budget reduction, which was approved by Mayor Karen Bass. According to NBC Los Angeles, “the budget reduction was mostly absorbed by leaving many administrative jobs at the fire department unfilled, but that left about $7 million that had to be cut from its overtime budget – which was earmarked for training, fire prevention, and other key functions.”
With discussion about the budget cuts heating up amid the current emergencies unfolding across the county, Mayor Bass responded on Wednesday evening, stating the budget cuts did not impact the LAFD’s response to these particular fires, including the 15,000-acre Palisades Fire.
Crowley’s memo was presented last month to a panel of mayoral appointees who oversee management of the fire department. The memo reads, in part: “Without this funding, pilot compliance and readiness are jeopardized, and aerial firefighting capabilities are diminished. Changes to the Air Operations Section impact the Department’s ability to adhere to current automatic and mutual aid agreements, provide air ambulance service, and quickly respond to woodland fires with water dropping helicopters.”
NBC Los Angeles reported that the memo “also highlighted other programs that would suffer under the cuts, including the Disaster Response Section, which funds the bulldozer teams that cut breaks and control lines around wildfires, and the Critical Incident Planning and Training Section, which develops plans for major emergencies.”

Looks like a warzone here. Honestly, nothing you could do once the fire started with the winds that were blowing. The wind gusts were crazy yesterday. Trees fallen, roof shingles everywhere.
Fortunately I'm good so far, not even a power outage yet. Palisades had no chance, tbh, with all the green there. Half of Pasadena also burned down.
Looks like the wind calmed down in the afternoon, hope it stays that way.
Having grown up and lived in San Diego County my whole life wildfires are just part of the territory...but I've never seen anything like the aftermath in Pacific Palisades. It looks like it was wiped out by a massive bomb, just unreal.

Reinsurance prices skyrocketed. Not just California, Florida too. We have much larger amount of catastrophic climate events, and it ain't because of missing rakes or DEI departments, tbh...
This also impact house affordability, since you have to have an insurance to sustain mortgages. We'll see where this goes, but something is going to have to give.

I’ve gotten myself into a bit of a jam. A series of natural disasters is barreling towards my home, and there is a severe shortage of resources and trained professionals available in my community to help me stave them off. So, I am putting out a call for any available public service personnel to help me protect my property. I’m willing to pay literally any amount of money, just so long as I don’t have to pay a fixed, reasonable amount of money in taxes regularly.
Look, I will give you the full balance of my Robinhood account. Money is no object. Unless, of course, that money will be added to a pool of community funds that would then be used to pay for the services I’m currently requesting. In that case, money is the only object. After all, why should I pay a small amount to help myself and my community when I can pay an exorbitant amount just to help myself? Taxation is theft, but price gouging is just good business. So gouge me all you want. Just don’t trample my freedoms by taxing me.
(https://store.mcsweeneys.net/products/quarterly-concern-subscription)Seriously, I don’t care how much it costs. Take every dime I have. But know this: I would level my house to the ground before I paid slightly higher property taxes to fund infrastructure that would prevent a landslide from leveling my house to the ground.
You might be questioning the economics of my position. You might say that it would be more financially beneficial for me to simply make regular contributions to a governing body that sets up services for myself and my neighbors. That by combining resources with my fellow citizens, I would get the same help I now desperately need for a fraction of the cost. And you’re probably correct. But the truth is, it’s not about the money. You see, taxes are an implicit acknowledgment that I exist within society and not above it. That my fate is tethered to the fate of humanity at large.
I will pay anything to deny this reality, even if it makes me objectively worse off. That’s why I’ll give up everything I own to save my home, and absolutely nothing to save both my home and the homes of my neighbors.
And before you ask, yes, I believe this holds true for all of our, or more accurately, all of MY biggest problems. Why use tax dollars to fund public health research when, in the event of a pandemic, I can just spend millions building myself a hermetically sealed chamber? Why pay a modest transportation tax to build a subway system when I can throw billions of investor dollars at a high-tech underground network of tunnels that is definitely not in any way just a glorified subway system for rich people? Why pay a carbon tax to offset climate change when I can simply buy a new, completely uninsurable megamansion after each inevitable disaster?
(https://store.mcsweeneys.net/products/rosamond-lehmann-in-vegas)I’m even investing in my own personal asteroid defense system for if/when a giant meteor threatens to strike. I just have to figure out how to save the planet for myself without also saving it for everyone else. Otherwise, that would be collectivism, which is basically what taxation is all about.
Oh lord, my home is about to be swept away in a flood. Can you all help me? Please?https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/i-will-pay-any-amount-to-not-pay-my-taxes

Those people 100% disagree with me on politics, but I don't want them to suffer.1.1 million people in LA county voted for Trump in 2024. In California overall over 6 million people did. The latter number exceeds the population of 30 US states
Looking at large US cities and states and saying "not my people" is weird as hell.

I meant, draining off LA county's homeless budget doesn't even begin to solve the wildfire preparedness issue.
