Average first day of 100 is June 23rd and we're forecast to get blocks of 106 together. That shit's not normal. A bunch of 106 days together isn't even normal for August.

Absolutely sucks.
We knew this drastic variation in temperature was coming.
But this quickly?

No idea how easily this can be reversed and how quickly.

We have a strong El Nino and we're still getting hammered like our triple dip La Nina year. This area is going to really suck in 35-40 years as global warming continues its march unabated.

Good point.
If we get some precipitation with this it would help the vegetation. (Farmers and such)
The humidity would be a killer though.

You should move to San Diego. We just had the coolest May temps we've had in 20 years. June is shaping up to be the coolest in 20 years as well. Been weird...feel like we've only had a sunny day a few times in the last month.

Exactly the type of thing predicted. Large variations with the average world temps going up.
Our May and part of June was very nice. Much nicer than last year. Now flip the switch.

El Nino has just begun. We won't really see it's effects here until fall/winter. Hopefully some good flooding.

Maybe this early heat will give a better chance at some tropical systems over the summer. That would be nice.

Probably not with a strong El Nino that sends strong wind shear into the Gulf by moving the jet stream south

Jet streamed hasn't changed to an El Nino pattern. Probably won't until fall/winter.

SAN DIEGO — Every decade the National Weather Service recalibrates the annual average temperature for all locations across the country, and over the last 10 years, San Diego has set a record almost every year.

And San Diego is not alone. Since 2010 there have been record temperatures nationwide, according to Alex Tardy, a Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Diego.

Pretty much how I felt in May and early June where days were mostly in the 80s, though was expecting the other shoe dropping to be like we're back to 97-100 not 103-106 given it's no longer La Nina.

I'm located in the Central Valley, pretty much the last sizeable town (we're about 35k) before Yosemite Park, near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains and on the opposite side, about 1.5 hours from the Bay, but we're always having some scorching summers here, almost like back home, just less humidity, but man, a few weeks ago, it was 96 with 44% humidity...I felt flashbacks to San Antonio.

I hate when people act like 44% isn't high humidity either, that's fucking gross when it's 96 degrees; it's a 70.5 degree dewpoint. That's about where we're at the last few days, 95-97 with dewpoints 70-74 and you go outside for five minutes and just feel fucking sticky when you come in. Last year we were having days of 105 with dewpoints like 75 and god I fucking hope we don't have that again with this heat wave. Usually if we get over 100 at least the dewpoints drop into the mid to high 50s but not last year.

I don't believe in climate change?!?! lol your assumptions are so fucking stupid it hurts.

A large portion of my job is tracking climate change, average temps, and average rainfall here in California. Based on my findings I advise where we plant, what variety we plant, and when we harvest. I do the same in our growing regions in Mexico, Peru, and Chile. Thanks for the link though lol I needed the laugh. I have spreadsheets I've created with average temps, average rainfall, and soil conditions for every city within 40 miles of the California coast from San Diego to Morro Bay. I see firsthand on a daily basis how the climate is changing and what it is affecting, my job depends on believing in it and adapting to it.

When I have free time I spend a lot of it running the deck for my best friend and captain's long range fishing boat. Water temp is one of the most important metrics we use when on the water fishing tuna. The changes in water temps over the years off the coast of San Diego and down into Mexico are definitely not normal and it's changed bait movement, how we rig gear, and what we fish for. We've been catching Wahoo off the coast of San Diego...that shit didn't happen regularly 10 years ago. The size and frequency of large bluefin we are catching now weren't seen 10 years ago. Ocean temps rising off of California/Mexico have actually been hugely beneficial to those of us that fish the ocean.

I also spend a good amount of free time hunting and you guessed it...climate change has affected that as well. Deer movement isn't the same in the mountains I grew up hunting because of changes to the landscape because of warming temps. Certain bird species I used to hunt no longer fly into bodies of water they used to or forage in fields I used to hunt when I was younger because climate change has affected their food source.

TLDR cause I know you hate reading anything over a single sentence...you're a fucking idiot for saying I don't believe in climate change as my job and life outside of work are intimately connected to climate change.

Also since you're there, have you taken a road trip to Yosemite this year? The Mist Trail must be nuts right now with how much snowpack the Sierras got last winter. First time I hiked it in spring 2006 after another heavy snow year I must have had wood half the hike from passing so many hot women in wet white T-shirts from how much the Merced River was roaring over the falls. :lol

I head up to Tahoe every summer and stay in Squaw Valley. My wife went online a few weeks ago to check out when the rafting we always do down the Truckee river will be opening and their website said they aren't opening this year because Tahoe's water levels are too high and if released would cause river flow to be too dangerous. I'm fucking bummed as that's one of my favorite ways to spend 6 hours day drinking up there.

No way over knowing as there is no informational oversight despite Abbott's own commissions telling him he needs to create that.

Damn. Seriously though if you have a chance, check out the waterfalls in Yosemite in the next couple of weeks if you have never been in a June with a large snowpack. Extremely impressive hike plus it's not too hard, especially when being cooled by the mist from under Vernal Fall. Under Nevada Fall you might not catch too much mist since the climb is farther away than the one up Vernal Fall, still nice though. Plus at the top you can scoff all the tourons saying they're on their way to Half Dome holding only one almost empty 20 oz water bottle asking you for water. Ugh made the mistake of pulling out my water pump at the top of Nevada Fall one time.

You think me having a 2 year old on my back and my 5 year old walking could pull off the hike? Or could you make it with an offroad stroller? We sometimes shoot off the 395 to Yosemite for a few days on our way to Tahoe. I'm guessing the waterfalls would still be good in August.

My cousin lives in Olympic Village and sent pictures from the cabin and showing how high the snow came up and I can't ever wrap my head around it. After a really heavy night they woke up and couldn't get their front door open so he went to the second floor and that window was blocked in by snow. Had to go to the third story window to get out :lol Absolutely crazy how much snow they got. The pictures I saw from Mammoth this year at a condo we stay at were even crazier. I was up there this last winter and we called our trip early and headed home after seeing the incoming storm. Glad we did because my friends who stayed were stuck up there for over a week waiting for their road to get plowed.

Speaking of Truckee have you been there lately? Drove in to downtown last year after not having been there for a few years and their downtown area was really popping. Nice now to be able get out of Squaw Valley and not get raped on prices and still have some cool restaurants to eat at without the douchey Tahoe crowd.

Nah I wouldn't advise doing it then. Stroller is an absolute no-go. The steps under Vernal Fall are really slippery when the fall is raging like it should be now. Plus the steps are kind of high for a five year old and it's a couple thousand feet of elevation gain to get to the top of the second fall (Nevada Fall) if I remember right. Probably something better to put off until the kids are like 9-10. Here's an idea of what the steps under Vernal Fall look like:

https://www.yosemitehikes.com/images/ns/vernal-fall-750h.jpg

The ones up to Nevada Fall on the Mist Trail are quite a bit steeper but they shouldn't be wet and slippery like the ones under Vernal will be.

The John Muir Trail can also be taken to both waterfalls and you won't have to worry about slipping with a kid on your back throwing off your balance and with a five year old. I have never hiked that section of the JMT before but horses can use it so it's probably way smoother going and you don't have to worry about your five year old slipping.

The JMT is in light blue here. Mist Trail in red and yellow.

https://www.yosemitehikes.com/yosemite-valley/mist-trail/trail-map.htm

Just make sure your kids know to respect the Merced River because people get swept over Vernal Fall to their deaths all the time and there's an area that looks calm but can have very strong undercurrents. Though then again right now I imagine no part of the Merced over Vernal Fall looks calm.

Dewpoint of 77 is insanely humid here even for 3AM when it's clouded over much less 3PM and is giving us a heat index of 111 right now and we'll probably end up at 100 with a heat index of like 116 by the time 6PM rolls around. :vomit:

The bum is a weather guy I see.

I feel like the humidity thing is under sold.
For instance, riding a bike on our Greenway Trails is a great way to beat the heat. I put on a wicking head rag hanging over my head and neck and and go fast enough to get a very nice experience with evaporative cooling while riding the portions of the trail that are more shaded. But when the temps get this high and the humidity is too high it gets really rough. You can feel the difference riding through sunny vegetative areas vs. underneath the road ways and such down low. There is a notable "wave" of hot humid air out in the open with all the vegetation giving of water vapor. Its very noticeable and suffocating if you stay in it for a good length of time. Going underneath IH 10 and 1604 and a lot of the elevated roadways you get a noticeable "blob" of cooler humid air. Its quite strange but very evident.

And after riding yesterday I realize I dont really need to resoak my head rag and upper body as they just dont evaporate much water, even in a stiffer wind. If there is zero wind like yesterday, its really sort of self defeating exercise. And if the air quality is bad its really depressing as I thought I had found a good way to get a good workout other than running which is just miserable. And I hate going inside on a treadmill, hate it.... So Swimming gets the nod on days like these but swimming really does not do the leg work that biking, and especially running require. Even just working with a paddle board and kicking. It just does not use the large muscles of the legs.

Do more laps, swim team doing 50-100 laps was brutal. If you know how to backstroke, that works your legs a lot too.

Im terrible at backstroke. Cannot do butterfly, no fn way. Breaststroke you can take very easy so I prefer freestyle.
I do use the swim fins on my back and kick the legs with arms out in front and pointed forward hands together. I guess Ill do more of that? The swim fins get you going really fast but they take it out of your legs quickly. I dont do all that well without fins and not using the arms on the back. I go at lunch so I often have to share lanes so I usually dont like to do anything on my back so as to stay straight path so I dont crash into anyone. I have already hit fingers on freestyle with people and it was not pleasant. Nor is hitting the hard plastic lane lines. But its great coming back to work after swimming, eating, and finishing the day out and then bike in the evenings.

I grew up swimming in rivers, streams and lakes. Never formal swimming, just survival swimming. When I started swimming laps it was difficult. Even if I have good endurance from running, swimming is just more technical if you really want to be efficient and not get shoulder problems I have learned. We actually get occasional access to the 50 meter lanes and I absolutely love that. I feel like I can really get in a groove and not be turning after 25 yards. More time actually swimming. And Im not good at the flip turn so... yeah. I love it, but I did not grow up with swimming laps.

I was thinking of using that floaty between the legs but I do a pretty good job of kicking just enough so I keep my body flat and not dragging so I dont know how much that would help the mechanics of my freestyle. I youtube effortless swimming and they have some good tips but Im basically self taught. And Effortless Swimming puts a bit more emphasis on open water Triathlon swimming where you have to take a look up every once in a while to get your bearings.

I do 34 back and forth in the 25 yard lanes so I guess thats 68 labs. Around a mile. But I dont push hard. So I guess I do increments of 50, 100,150... to 400 yards. I think on average it takes about 23-24 seconds per "lap" or just a bit over a yard a second. I think Im getting better but I probably need an instructor. Some people at the pool who are really good swimmers have been helpful because they see I am getting better, but for something technical like swimming I need real help.

I think I probably made this too long but I really like swimming to take away running pounding. So I do like suggestions from people who have actually done this on a higher level.

Edit: I eat a ton of food after swimming. It makes me much hungrier than running. Cant quite figure out why. Running burns more calories. Maybe the water being "cold" and restoration of body heat uses calories?

Swimming works your whole body, not just your legs. Over time running burns more, usually just because people don't swim for as long as they run.

I swam and biked today.
The biking came in the evening.

The biking was very difficult and I wont be doing it again with these temps and humidity.
I think it did more harm than good. I know the current ideas say you can acclimate. If you are an African Pygmy living in the Congo Jungle.

I think windspeed needs to be considered along with temp and humidity. When its perfectly still, its perfectly miserable.
Everytime I stopped to drink it was awful.

Absolutely.
Its wonderful at the NISD complex. Pool is still cool. I think they have to keep it cool enough for competitions so it will be interesting to see how the outdoor v. the indoor Olympic size pools vary in temps.

Found this as well.
Running does burn more calories per unit time. 20 minutes and longer.

So I dont get why I am so hungry after swimming and not running.
Maybe its just my body-brain interaction. Which is already strange enough...

Just interested as I was just there for about a week.
They have had a hell of a lot of rain on the eastern side of the mountains.
The population of rabbits, mice, kangaroo rat type critters has skyrocketed.
The reptiles, bullsnakes, rat snakes, rattlesnakes... the big barn snakes have not caught up yet. I imagine they should increase by the end of the summer because there is a ton of food to be eaten.

Yeah I saw some raised “boardwalks” through the snow and found out that was part of the system.
I was never an off road/or bmxbiker as a kid like a bunch of my friends who also liked being outdoors. My lack of experience could be a big problem. But I certainly could get into shape given the altitude.
Being a once a year skier I would not touch one whole part of CB with double diamonds. I like the long drawn out slopes you can get on the Paradise lift. If I skied consistently up there I would have already hurt myself. As it stands my knees and endurance are very good so I figure I would stay that way. It’s almost a given if I lived there I would already have been injured and would not stop skiing after recovering. I also would have learned how to fly fish well if I lived up there. And probably been a river kayaker instead of an ocean kayaker. Surprisingly I have learned how to read water fairly well just by kayaking the Devils and Llano rivers a number of times. CC has bacteria growing on the surface of his prosthesis. With no blood supply, antibiotics can't get to the bacteria. That's why he has to keep taking antibiotics and the infection spreads when he stops. Normally they pull out all the hardware and put in an antibiotic spacer which stays in until the infection is completely cleared (weeks to months). Then replace the hardware.

:lol

We haven't. We wanted to go for Memorial Day, but the HWY 120 corridor was closed off and the only other way around would add another 2-3 hours for a trip that's normally 2.5 hours, tops.

BUT, that overall, this June has been AMAZING. Our average high thus far is 81! We had a high of 77 yesterday and averaged low to mid 80s most of the month. It's definitely been the coolest start to a summer here for the 14 summers I've been here.

Driving to Reno this weekend, so excited to see how much snow is still up in the Mountains. When we went in April of last year, there was still snow on the ground levels at about 2,000 ft elevation and we were able to go snowing (sledding, tubing- a snow day) in mid-May last year without going maybe 45 minutes from home, so I'm really excited to see what we'll be able to do this year. Got my snow bib and boots ready as I already know I'm gonna choke a wad in losses in Nevada.

Sadly, won't be driving that way when we go to Vegas in mid-July for the Summer League, we have to go thru SoCal, but super excited to feel the High desert kicking up at night.

While I can't stand the politics and the retarded California trash (and yes, these people are FUCKING DUMB...talking to an average Californian is like attending a PTO/PTA meeting at Alamo Heights and speaking with the absentee parents who attend due to custody or reputation purposes and they don't jack about what's going on) the weather and diverse landscape still make it a more appealing place to live than back home.

We bought a cabin in Alma, about 15 minutes from Brackenridge last year. Going there for the first time in August to escape the Texas heat. Looking forward to seeing the wildlife and mild days.

BUT, that overall, this June has been AMAZING. Our average high thus far is 81! We had a high of 77 yesterday and averaged low to mid 80s most of the month. It's definitely been the coolest start to a summer here for the 14 summers I've been here.

Lucky bastards :lol

We're having an extended high pressure ridge that flared up a week ago, took us to 105 yesterday, probably takes us there again today, 104 tomorrow before the heat dome moves a little west for Thursday and Friday that might drop us to 100. Then the fucker is supposed to come right back and intensify again Friday and stick around until at least early July with straight 102-103 forecast the whole time. Basically looking a lot like what June looked like here last year, though we won't have a record setting 18 days over 100 this June like we did last. Probably only have 15 this June. But with higher humidity. Fucking dewpoint is 76 right now and heat index is already 111 as of 1:15. Typical year in the last 20 years though is 18 days of 100+ the entire year, so this will almost surely be another way above average summer.

You think me having a 2 year old on my back and my 5 year old walking could pull off the hike? Or could you make it with an offroad stroller? We sometimes shoot off the 395 to Yosemite for a few days on our way to Tahoe. I'm guessing the waterfalls would still be good in August.

No way a 5 year old is making it up all the way.

Crap, missed the part about August. Yosemite waterfalls usually suck in August. They'll be better this August than most Augusts but I still wouldn't have high hopes for them then.

I can't do it. When you live there for so long, it becomes part of life and you adjust/adapt to it. I remember my glasses always fogging up every time stepping out of my vehicle, even with anti-fog coatings. You really can't explain it to someone who has never lived in it or experienced it. But, when the humidity strikes up, it will always trigger memories of San Antonio.

My electric bill here is roughly $1 grand a month during summer. Even with drastically lower energy prices, I'm curious to what my electric spend would be with CPS. The last summer I lived in San Antonio, we had a 2-story, 1,500 foot town home on that nice golf course by Wurzbach Parkway between Perrin Bietel, Nacadoches and Wetmore and I never went over $350 in 2009 money and I blasted til we were down to 69 at night time (impossible to achieve during the day, I swear).

This is severely biting into my ability to exercise properly.Have fun, but be reasonable and listen to your body. If I ever got dizzy or faintheaded I hope I would get off of my bicycle and attempt to walk on the sidewalk, helmet on. I do about 60 miles/wk on the bike.

Sunday and today were pretty hot.

My general rule of thumb is to not to exceed 35 minutes of usage, we'll see how it goes this summer. I've got weekend soccer games on top. First one was ok, god bless the 10 am start time.

How "cool" you get to play soccer!
I have friends in Austin playing in leagues. One participated in the indoor leagues as well but he tore his ACL. He said it was very quick and more ball skills.
I wont participate again as I just dont have the skills. And rec leagues in San Antonio just dont come close to Austin.

The bike in the evening just does not work on pavement of large surface area around you. It just holds too much heat. I just get hot air flowing past me and basically get air fried so I retreat to the biking/running/walking system the Greenway Trails. Vegetation around you is definitely better than pavement that holds eat. Early morning is tough for me schedule wise. Lunch and after work. And part of the problem is that I think I work too well in heat and that I cant take enough water in. It takes me so long to rehydrate as given by urination color. And I just dont get enough warning signs. If I get dizzy I will definitely stop. The pool at lunch has saved me but sometime it does not agree with what is happening at work.

Nonetheless it is miserable but I think I am probably addicted to exercise.

In fact I almost always pee in the porta potties before I go biking. Same with swimming in the locker room. I think I am one of the few people who stop to hydrate while swimming laps.

Its been a lot better biking the past few days.
The humidity makes a huge difference as long as I plan routes that lead to water I can splash down my wicking head cloth and shirt. I get dry after about 4 miles in low humidity so I completely drench myself again. I guess because I get so much more evaporative cooling from the fountain water instead of my own sweat, Im not sweating as much and the 1/3 gatoraide, 2/3 water is working. I just need two frozen bottles at the start. And get another at the truck if I still feel good after I finish them.
Anyways it not quite a nice this evening as it was yesterday. But at least Im getting my exercise hit "addiction" outside.

Still not going to kayak fish at the coast. Its been brutal per friends. I dont like to do the early thing and come in at noon. I want to stay out there if I think I have got it figured out. Redfish still bite in the heat in the correct places. I would have a tendency to stay too long and been worn out for the next day of fishing.

Sometimes at 6 pm sometimes 7 pm till around sunset. Weekends I pick it depending.
The humidity is almost always lower later but of course the temps are up. Today the humidity was up again but the wind also quite nice.
I took the swimming route at lunch and wanted to ride this evening but did not (which would have been interesting because the humidity was up but so was the wind.)
Im very lucky to be able to swim at lunch. I usually work well in the afternoon because of it.

With biking sometimes the winter causes layering clothing problems. You feel cold at first but then you warm up and its not clear what clothing to wear and its a pain to take stuff off. The winter brings in the problem of having your digits and face want to freeze off. Fast through cold wet air is really difficult.

I just have a sweat wicking base layer and a long sleeved wicking shirt on top of it for cold weather, plus some felt lined tights and shorts. Good down to 30 degrees in that, and some Showers Pass cycling gloves I use for walking my dog in the cold too. Also have some Shimano shoe covers that work really well. Only time my hands really get chilly is if there is no sun and a strong north wind.

I completely forgot about the wet foot issue! that sucks.
I dont have the fancier bikes and dont use the pop in shoes.

I need to upgrade. I was told a good bike fit makes it much easier on your body. I usually dont do long rides as in time. Usually just over an hour most often but I work really hard at it. I purposely get out of the saddle for long hills and switch backs so I can get to breathing hard like running.

I need to take the time off to buy one of the better bikes. When I rode one from Pittsburg to DC, the Allegany bike trail, we did about 55-60 miles a day and I did it easily (its very flat) and without hardly any butt, leg, or hand pain. And the bike I rented (which i failed to look at closely enough) was incredibly easy to ride. I never could have got the same results with "my" bikes (old hybrids does off road well). The rented bike was fancy with disc brakes and phalanged handle bars (my hands did not ever cramp). Oh it also had one of the tiny unpadded seats and it did not hurt my butt? My god that thing was so efficient. My bikes absolutely suck in efficiency compared to that thing so I need advice on a good bike that gives me the same comfort as on that long trail and is so easy to pedal. I could go very fast without even trying for very long periods. And the few hills were absolutely zero problem, even at the end of a ride. I did not miss a day of biking on that journey while my friends took days off. Weather was absolutely great.

Im not into bikes enough to warrant a big expense so I wonder if about 1000 would get it done for me. For some reason I dont really care much about the mechanisms and doing my own maintenance. I can put chains back on (a must do as you wont get far if it occurs while out) and I can fix flats but I really dont want to if I dont have to. Also I rode without the pop in shoes on the trail so I wonder if that really is necessary. Am I not using all the muscles? like if I had to actually pull up instead of always pushing down...? I want to get tired but I dont want to wear on my body like I have experienced with running.

Just go to a local bike shop, tell them what you want and your budget, they should be able to help. I have a gravel bike with road tires and disc brakes that I got for $1100 or so 6 years ago. Some of them have a lot of bikes that have been traded in that may be a good fit, too. Either way you can have a bike fitted to you for $100 or so, but they may do it for free with a new purchase. I used to have tune ups done at the store I got my bike at, but the wait times were really long so I just go to REI. If you are a member you get a 10% discount on maintenance.

The big picture: The heat dome is toppling records. Multiple locations in Texas set monthly and all-time temperature highs (https://www.axios.com/2023/06/28/texas-heat-power-use-record-southern-us-temperatures) last week.

And with air conditioners humming relentlessly, the state hit a new record for electricity usage on June 27.
Meanwhile, Texas' renewable energy production also climbed to new highs amid outages (https://www.texasstandard.org/stories/heat-wave-will-test-texas-grid-but-power-outages-are-unlikely/) from a large number of fossil-fuel plants.

Why it matters: As states across the U.S. take steps to decarbonize, the role and reliability of renewable power are being closely watched in Texas. The Lone Star State has the second largest renewable capacity in the country (after California) — and is prone to extreme temperatures that can strain the grid.

So far this year, Texas’ renewables have passed the test.

What they’re saying: "The market just kind of shrugged because there was so much wind and solar in the market ... It's another demonstration of the benefit for consumers that we see from wind and solar," says Doug Lewin, author of the Texas Energy and Power Newsletter (https://douglewin.substack.com/).

“Having solar provide during the hottest parts of the day is allowing our thermal fleet to not run itself into the ground as fast,” Josh Rhodes, a research scientist at the University of Texas at Austin, told Texas Monthly (https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/solar-power-texas-heat-wave/).

By the numbers: The state's solar capacity has nearly tripled in the past three years, and there are thousands more megawatts now under development, as Texas Monthly notes.

The Texas grid was producing a record 31 gigawatts (https://twitter.com/maxk/status/1674189803082899456?s=20) of renewable power last Wednesday.
And as a share of total power, renewables reached 35%-40% during peak usage last week, Lewin says. (For comparison, renewables provided about 25% of the state's power (https://www.eia.gov/state/analysis.php?sid=TX) during 2022.)

Power prices climbed from the typical area of around $30 per megawatt hour — but they mostly stayed below $50 throughout the week, says Lewin.

"A few years ago, on a day like last Tuesday there would have been a very high likelihood that you would have seen prices in the $1,000s per megawatt hour area," he says. (In Texas' deregulated power market, occasional price spikes during high demand are a feature, not a bug (https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/23/us/texas-outages-electric-bills-griddy/index.html).)

"Renewables likely saved consumers a billion dollars or more last week alone," Lewin adds.

Two key stats: Renewables reduced wholesale electricity costs in Texas by $11 billion in 2022, according to a recent paper (https://www.ideasmiths.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Impact-of-Renewables-in-ERCOT_FINAL.pdf) that Rhodes authored.

But it could have been more: Transmission congestion [I]cost Texans nearly $3 billion last year (https://www.potomaceconomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2022-State-of-the-Market-Report_Final_060623.pdf).
In other words, much of the excess solar power produced in high-generation areas like the south and west couldn't be moved to places like central Texas that would gobble it up if they could get their hands on it, says Michael Webber, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

He, like other Trumpsters, cannot deal with simple ideas like an average and variation.
I think its more likely they dont want to.

So try again.
The average temp of the earth's atmosphere and oceans is going up much faster (short amount of time) than in the past. Some of the past is a bit more sketchy because we were not taking global temps, but there are other ways to give us some broad ideas about the temp in the past. CO2 is the most abundant gas that plays a role in creating the greenhouse effect where sunlight is allowed in, but when the sunlight transforms into heat energy, CO2 wont let the heat energy back out into the outer reaches of the atmosphere, it traps a lot of heat energy. The rise in global temp correlates extraordinarily well with the earths rise in CO2 which has increased greatly since the industrial revolution.

Climate scientists and oil companies and others have gotten very good at creating models of climate, thus weather forecasts have gotten much better, especially broad forecasts over large amount of area.
AT this TIME the ideas are the earths AVG. temp (air and water) is rising rapidly per measurement. Also predicted by many different models is that the VARIATION in temp would increase. More very hot and very cold temps yet the earths AVERAGE would increase because, quite obviously, there would be a larger number of very hot extremes.

Does this make any sense Darrin? Ocean current patterns change, air patterns change, and then the infrastructure we have in place, FARMS and CITIES would have to deal with changes that they were not made for. This IS COSTING a buttload of money. We are going to have to become very adaptable to completely changing farming, cities, and so much else quickly because weather patterns are not only EXTREME, they VARY from the pattern have " we"laid out our farms and cities. "we" as humans on Earth.

So you think none of this makes sense DR. D?

"Wait till January, it will be very cold in some places" is not an argument. And because it gets very hot is some places its not absolutely on global warming (it could be tectonic etc...)
But overall... you say its BS?

AP) — Earth’s average temperature remained at a record high Wednesday, after two days in which the planet reached unofficial records. It’s the latest marker in a series of climate-change-driven extremes.

The average global temperature was 17.18 Celsius (62.9 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, a tool that uses satellite data and computer simulations to measure the world’s condition. That matched a record set Tuesday of 17.18 Celsius (62.9 Fahrenheit), and came after a previous record of 17.01 Celsius (62.6 degrees Fahrenheit) was set Monday.

On the scale of 1,000s of years, this visual illustrates that Earth’s temperature is now shooting straight up. Here are a few takeaways from the visual.

https://www.wfla.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/71/2023/07/LAST-20K-YEARS-WARMING-1.png?w=900Image: WFLA Jeff Berardelli adapted from Don’t Mention the Emergency

The rate of warming today is unprecedented in the 20,000 years shown. In fact, coming out of the last ice age, it took 10,000 years for the Earth’s average temperature to warm 3 degrees C.

Astonishingly, humans — due to the burning of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions — will likely cause the same amount of warming in 200 years. That means our current warming rate is 50 times that of the natural warming rate that proceeded the most recent ice age.

Between 10,000 years ago and today’s rapid manmade warming, Earth’s average temperature was relatively constant, allowing human civilizations to thrive. There were disruptive regional cooling episodes like the disparate Little Ice Age events (https://eos.org/articles/the-little-ice-age-wasnt-global-but-current-climate-change-is), but the impact on overall global temperature was relatively minor.

https://www.wfla.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/71/2023/07/PAGES2K-ED-HAWKINS-CLIMATE-STRIPES.jpg?w=900Image: Professor Ed Hawkins with PAGES2K data. Warming Stripes illustrates the Last 2000 years of global average temperature and the rapid warming in the last 100 years.

Since at the peak of the last ice age, Earth’s average temperature was about 10 degrees cooler than today, we know that it has not been this warm since before the last ice age. We call that time the “last interglacial” (in-between glacial periods) which peaked around 125,000 years ago.

First of all, the Texas PUC should pass a rule to require monthly reporting of utility shutoffs. You can’t manage what you can’t measure, and Texas isn't even bothering to track how many Texans are shut off for nonpayments.

Second, state and local leaders should be aggressively pursuing federal dollars to help reduce costs and increase reliability at no cost to ratepayers or the state of Texas. The major federal infrastructure bills contain tens of billions in potential assistance funds (https://www.rewiringamerica.org/policy/IRA-disadvantaged). The Home Energy Rebate programs alone (https://www.energy.gov/scep/home-energy-rebate-programs), which the State Energy Conservation Office will soon be able to apply for, could provide $690 million (https://www.energy.gov/articles/biden-harris-administration-announces-state-and-tribe-allocations-home-energy-rebate) to help struggling Texans lower their bills by weatherizing their homes. (The state could prioritize those at high risk of shut off for these incentives to add insulation and upgrade HVAC systems (https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/health-science/2023/07/03/455935/houston-no-air-conditioning-how-people-cope/). Other federal programs will help low income Texans get solar panels (https://www.dallasnews.com/opinion/commentary/2023/07/06/clean-energy-can-be-a-lifeline-for-low-income-texans/) and battery storage systems.)

Third, Texas needs to do far more to help Texans optimize energy use. Texas spends a pittance on this (https://twitter.com/douglewinenergy/status/1601011994920128513?s=20), which costs all of us more when electricity demand spikes during extreme heat or cold. Energy optimization helps people reduce use during times of peak demand and use more when there’s more electricity on the grid. It’s about getting more of what we want out of our energy system, using less power on peak to get it, and spending less money overall.

Fourth, Texas utilities don’t do nearly enough to help customers with low incomes to pay their bills. As one example, CenterPoint, one of the largest utilities in the country covering most of the Houston area, spends only $4 million on such programs (https://interchange.puc.texas.gov/search/documents/?controlNumber=55088&itemNumber=1). (https://interchange.puc.texas.gov/search/documents/?controlNumber=55088&itemNumber=1) (By contrast, their CEO made $38 million last year (https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/centerpoint-energy-david-lesar-overpaid-17790996.php#:~:text=David%20J.,a%20pay%20of%20%24 37.8%20million.).) They reached only 2,000 homes; Houston has over 300,000 households in extreme poverty, earning less than 30% of Area Median Income (https://tepri.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/TEPRI_LICPTexasOverview_August2019_REVISION_v3.pdf ) (AMI). This is an acute problem. These funds should be increased and focused first and foremost on the people who need them the most.

Fifth, we should let all Texans profit from programs that reward customers for shifting their use. Today, factory owners and Bitcoin miners get paid to reduce power use when demand is high — but homeowners and renters don’t (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/29/opinion/texas-heat-wave-power-outages.html?unlocked_article_code=so1MUdgQemVq79P phdoaAzVsMQdxq3gYT3ehvufqCDEY8fpMvzyk5Jm73_uzo2Ck6-c2AHen7pvnmXU-rYroP95ciOLF1PQApvIkYSfJkHX3AlycU4mN8YdExrOwgdAwar At6EAc7B6pSIHjyuifOd2gUkY6KXz0sIFEfltIOnGm1YrQcrgF lgHgktIirkC1NhW5wqzA7IMJs7RTzuuedWFN89yM2pR7S3A09S FuqtSeBH3x0TwdB8tr4ctjdAsgIpUZ8Rko_GwDeWwo6b42rTkz 85-dcokqc-pcG72_YPoD8PmDI4KJtEOz9qnfcoOsxSyf-I--EDa08KiJuPNCn1ukWDRxrlof&smid=url-share). That’s wrong, and it’s a problem for the grid.

I wrote recently about 4CP (https://www.douglewin.com/p/texas-has-never-had-a-summer-blackout), a pricing program that allows big customers to reduce their bills by 20-30% (sometimes more) by using less when energy use peaks. That’s good, but it’s patently unfair that no price signal is available to small customers. The Independent Market Monitor has told the PUC for nearly a decade that 4CP shifts costs (https://www.potomaceconomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2022-State-of-the-Market-Report_Final_060623.pdf) from big to small customers. Homeowners, renters, and small businesses need a similar avenue to shift their use and reduce their bills.

They do not track anything to do with the power grid. Like with education, Abbot tasked the Sunset Commission to analyze the grid in the wake of the winter storm a few years back.

One of the central recommendations was to track grid usage including outages and cutoffs in a central database. The idea being that we are in a position of supreme ignorance as to what is going on.

Of course Abbott nor the legislature has done any of the recommendations. Meanwhile, we get special sessions that nobody but Abbot wants.

Since the Industrial Revolution, that has come from fossil fuels.

Replacing cheap fossil fuels with a much more expensive or unscalable alternative would end modern civilization.

Fossil fuels wont be replaced for a long time.
We already have scalable less expensive alternatives for most of our electric needs. And its going to get much better and more widespread.
It should and will take advantage of each situation for particular parts of the country and also should have the ability to be replaced and or moved as climate dictates.
And lots more to come.

Once we can control voltage better and store energy in a gravitational field staring us in the face, things should take off. Its coming. We will definitely be able to bypass batteries in some of these situations. More energy gets stored that can be used to turn turbines, not just rely on heated water, steam, or hydroelectric from natural water cycles. Not to mention fusion either because imo its also further down the road.

We also should figure out cheaply how to generate as much energy as has been produced by all fossil fuels over the past 150 years so that we can scrub CO2 out of the atmosphere and get back down to 280. It won’t be the status quo ante quite, but it will be better than what’s coming.

You think there were people who were leery of going from horse to machine?
You think when that first clunky machine came into town on a dirt road, that everyone said how badly the wanted this thing when it broke down in front of them and they learned the cost was more than their farm?

THE ISLAND OF Svalbard, about halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, is warming twice as fast as the rest of the Arctic, which itself is warming up to four and a half times faster (https://www.wired.com/story/why-the-arctic-is-warming-4-times-as-fast-as-the-rest-of-earth/) than the rest of the planet. Scientists just discovered that the island’s retreating glaciers are creating a potentially significant climate feedback loop: When the ice disappears, groundwater that’s supersaturated with methane bubbles to the surface. Methane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas (https://www.wired.com/story/the-ipcc-reports-silver-lining-we-can-tackle-methane-now/), 80 times as powerful as carbon dioxide. This groundwater can have more than 600,000 times the methane of a cup of water that’s been sitting with its surface exposed to air.

“What that means is that once it hits the atmosphere, it’s going to equilibrate, and it’s going to release as much methane as it can—quickly,” says Gabrielle Kleber, a glacial biogeochemist at University of Cambridge and the University Centre in Svalbard and lead author of a new paper (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-023-01210-6) describing the discovery in Nature Geoscience. “It’s about 2,300 tons of methane that’s released annually from springs just on Svalbard. It’s maybe equivalent to something like 30,000 cows.” (Cows burp methane—a lot of it (https://www.wired.com/story/the-controversial-quest-to-make-cow-burps-less-noxious/).)

This poster appeared to have no clue that before the industrial revolution we used animals as sources of energy.
My analogy was fossil fuels CAN be replaced in certain areas by new sources of energy just like the switch from animal to machine.
Horses run on very cheap fuel. Machines not so. But machines are much more efficient. We CAN transition was the point, we already have.
Texas is being saved this summer by wind and solar used for cooling. You wont hear hardly ANYTHING about this from the red team about this because the involuntary response is drill baby drill, this is Texas.

Grazing on grass... I dont think so. When machines first came into use they were much more expensive than horses, there is no math. And many ran on steam that burned coal. The initial cost eventually paid off especially as machines got better. This was mainly for transporting material, traveling, and farming. Go to your farm and use a horse. It will be less expensive. If it dies get another. Horses are extremely cheap. They have plenty of adoption farms. Go get one. Never call a vet. Then get another when your first horse dies.
What is your problem here?

Its like you dont think there is a history of technology. Just because you adore hydrocarbons does not mean others sources of more direct energy cant be used.
You dont think wind and solar farms in Texas are paying off? Why does Texas uses more wind energy than any country in the world except the US? And why do you think Texas is #1 in producing wind energy in the US? You think this should all be done off methane and coal or what?

edit: AGAIN snaked. You think fossil fuels alone do the work? They dont require machines...? So grass is the fuel for horses and fossil fuels were and are the fuel for machines. Do you understand this? The machines are not free. How in the world can you keep up with the fed, inflation, unemployment, etc... when you cant even understand the above?

Its bullshit in the context of the original comparison of horses and machines working for us. Lets not go through more farting stuff this is easy. And as someone who owns horses right now I know this stuff but I would refer to my wife for the greatest details. And if you know people you can tradeoff with the care and any needed trailering (hey you need a machine to move horses!)You especially should be able to hire someone it sounds like.
You can get horses very cheap. You can adopt them easily. You do have to spend time on them depending on what you want them to do which is recreational for the vast majority of people. Vet bills are by far the biggest expense along with food. But, if you have good fields, you can avoid a hell of a lot of grain. Many people keep the horses way too skinny or too fat because they are lazy and dont need to own them.

And the point is this:
We are comparing the industrial revolution to present.. Because horses are used for a very different functions and its mostly recreational. Machinery has taken over the old duty of horses. If you own horses today you are most likely into it as a hobby so you already got the bucks. Horses were replaced by Machines. But the machines were much more expensive than the horses when the switchover from horsepower (to what should be Watts today) to machine power occurred during the industrial revolution and after.

This is not rocket science and the analogy is not that hard. Its technological advances in agriculture and transportation that have eliminated the need for horses except for rare cases. In the same way machines that produce energy for electricity using hydrocarbons are being replaced by machines that dont. ESPECIALLY if we take in the consequences of producing too much CO2 and how it has cost our economy. Again. I thought the red team were supposed to understand business. Im not getting this. Hydrocarbons have their place, BUT a needed switch is taking place that Snaked hates.

Windpower and solar are saving your ass this summer and you dont even accept it.
And this does not even take into account the economic damage from the overuse of hydrocarbons that has produced so much CO2 so quickly. Starting with the industrial revolution. Take a look back at Winehole's timeline.

I think the largest component is the way your generation voted from when you came into power in the 1980s and ever since.

It was it's worst with the Reagan hero worship while shoving through more supply side side stupidity in the era of Tea Party. Since then the generation ahs been dying off and less impactful except that the ruling class is generally all boomers.

Throw on top of that the typical human behavior of demonizing the youth and you get what you get.
