Besides the few uncompetitive games so far, many things just feel wrong about it. The NFL only plays one neutral site game in the playoffs and that is the Super Bowl. NFL is more popular that college football, but now college football fans are asked to go to three neutral site games on the way to the title.

The decision for the Big 12 to allow Texas to be independent in football but stay on on the Olympic sports would have been incredibly easy for the Big 12. The ACC doesn't mind (too much) that Notre Dame uses them like that.

The only real issue for UT going independent would have been getting a TV deal similar to Notre Dame's insane NBC deal.
But ESPN previously gave them their own channel so it wouldn't surprise me if someone like TNT/TBS or even a streaming service like MAX would have stepped up and paid out.

But again we'll never know, they never tried.
