Agreed. Cranston is amazing there. And in general I think episodes like that one are a big part of what makes the show work so well. The moments of quiet make the loud that much more impressive.

How do you interpret that episode?
... never added any variables to the story... an hour devoted to expanding on Walt's internal demons in an odd way... just an artsy episode imho.

I'd argue that expanding on Walt's internal demons added a lot of variables to the show. Plot isn't everything.

Perhaps... whatever your view, I don't think anyone can argue that the episode is inconsistent with the series. All of the episodes are well written, but I think the Fly episode was a mistake. Your job as a writer/director isn't to make your audience that's been following for 3 seasons at that point to say "WTF?"

Eh... I don't see that from a writing point of view or a cinematic point of view... I guess they're both showing Walt losing his mind, but I would bet you're one of the very few to attempt linking those two episodes on any level.
And I'm going to be an asshole douche by asking this... but oh well. It's the internet. Do you think you're somehow smarter because you think you can see something in that episode that others can't?
It's just a waste of an hour. The only time Vince has slipped up in the entire series in my mind. I didn't think Walt was anymore haunted or fucked up by the end of the episode. I think what Vince wanted, but failed to translate of Walt from the fly episode, he achieved in the latter episodes of S4.

No, I just thought it was a great episode - theatre of the absurd - or Coen Brothers lite. I was not a huge fan of the episode with the meth heads and the ATM machine myself, but it was along the same lines. Walt was done second guessing himself by the end of s4, so I dunno about your last point.

Season 5 cast photos are out. For the first time, Walt's wearing the Heisenberg hat. Just sayin'.
I think the way AMC is doing this last season is pretty cheap and dumb.
This last season will be comprised of 16 episodes. They'll only show a partial one this year with only 8 episodes, then wait a whole year to show the last 8.
That's flat out cheating the oudience.
I'm simply not watching 8 pathetic episodes just to get cut off and be told to wait another year. I'll just catch the whole complete season when is all done.

To me, even a "full" AMC season of 13 episodes of a show isn't enough, so this makes no difference at all. Mainline network shows usually had somewhere between 22 and 26 episodes when I was growing up.
It's all about the quality, not the quantity.

She's been my least favorite of the core actors/actresses on the show. The arc in her development hasn't really diverged from where she started. I don't know what the aim was for her character, but she does come off annoying to me, too.

I like all of the core as characters, even though I wouldn't necessarily like any of them as people. To that end, Marie is annoying, but it's a fairly interesting version of annoying. In my opinion, at least.
I'm not sure it has ever been the intention to have Marie be an important character on her own. But knowing who she is is certainly important to understanding Hank. She humanizes him; softens him. And watching her struggle to be supportive/understanding during Hank's recovery made me far more invested in seeing him get better than I would have been otherwise. She's there primarily to give us details about other, more important characters. We learn a lot about who Skyler is through their relationship as sisters. And, as I said, we certainly learn a lot about who Hank is through their marriage. Without Marie, Hank would be nothing but a walking plot point.

I find Marie less annoying than Skylar. Skylar is one dumb stupid bitch.
AMC does a really bad job of portraying women in The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad.
Lori Grimes, as her character is portrayed in TWD, is arguably one of the stupidest women ever to be integrated into a plot.

She controlled the shit out of Walter pre-diagnosis and early on. I cut her some slack because she didn't know what the hell Walter had going on for awhile and was justified in acting weird. But once Walter came clean, she starts giving his money away to her sister and Ted. Walter basically sold his soul only for his wife to undermine the very reason for his amassing the cash.

Walt got into the meth business because of his pride, not because he needed money for his treatment/family. Did those things factor in? Sure. In the end, however, he put his entire family in danger because he didn't want to accept his former friend's money. Skylar has acted like a bitch, but she did have her reasons.

How do you figure? He constantly reminds how he's trying to get as much money as possible to leave to his wife and 2 kids considering he never thought he would live this long. He even kept bringing up the math, how much he needs to make and how long that would take him. I would say that his pride is keeping him interested this far and it does peek through in some earlier parts ("Stay out of my territory")

Nope, it was hooked to the bell. First cut after the explosion is to Walt sitting in his (rental?) car in the airport parking lot listening to the news.
And I don't think it was intentional that it went off after several dings. When Walt was making the bomb and testing it with the walkie talkie, he had to keep pushing the button to get the trigger to blow. He couldn't get the wiring quite right.

then why was Walt chilling right outside the window when the black bodyguard guy was checking out the room? Obviously I thought when Walt heard the dinging he had to get as far away from the window as possible before detonating it, and that's why it took a few seconds from the first ding to blow. I also figured the shot of him in the car listening to the news was later in the day

I figured he was by the window when the meeting was happening, the same spot he was when Tyrus was checking the room, then waits for the dings, gets a safe distance, then detonates it with the same detonator he used in the kitchen.
Walt is shown getting in his car and driving away during the time Gus is changing clothes and driving over.

Walt looking like a young Phil Jackson in the opening scenes...he should've Grand Slam the waitress for being overly perky...
Looks like the ego on Walt is getting to a messianic point--probably will cost him. Hank is again pursuing things to the Nth degree and the Skylar/Ted dynamic may be something of a concern. I like how they set up a myriad of possible endgame situations for Walt in the opener.
Wayyy cool...
Screw AMC for making me sit through a-not-so-funny show to see a preview of next week's BB and a Walking Dead trailer--which, kicked ass as well...can't wait!
Also like AMC taking a page from the Mad Men ideology and having those, "Cable and Time Warner has this show but DISH Network doesn't ads. Though it sounded like bitter grapes it did humor me in that they'd advertise in that manner.

That's debatable since you can't have a great episode for your opening episode of your 5th season--It builds the plot and direction of the season. With that in mind, it was a great episode because it placed in front of you what's going to happen and in a sublime manner, they set up this year even better than last.

Wasn't the result of the magnet idea kind of a win-lose for Walt and Jessie? Yeah, the magnet probably destroyed the laptop in the evidence room but it did draw attention to a picture in the evidence room that had information about a routing number.

I think it was a combo of both Vince Gilligan and the braintrust @ AMC--they have shown lately that they will milk lengthy spaces of time between seasons with other headlining shows (The Walking Dead and Mad Men) and get their audience clamoring for new material. I don't mind it being split in two seasons--it allows you to have more Walt White in your life.

If they do it right--no. I mean, you had to wait a year or so for the new Mad Men and Michel Wiener pulled it off nicely for the return season. I think the writing in BB is so good that they'll be able to hold the interest of the audience and keep us fans' interest piqued for the show.

Schuler from Madrigal (and I assume the lady with the list) and Chen were the financial backers in a conglomerate of sorts with Gustavo Fring and the meth ring it seems. I would imagine that the El Pollo Hermano front was bigger than even what was the focal point of Albuquerque and so we start to see how immense this thing really was.
Also, you start to see a bit more into Mike's character--which, to me, was a great part of this episode. The dude is a beast and I think he'll have a huge role in this final two part season.

I believe that, at some point this season, Hank is going to figure out who Walt really is. At that point, we will get to see him struggle with the decision of how to handle the situation.

Walt is flying high right now, and thinks he's prepped for anything. I don't think he really understands what a reptile Mike is.
Walt is just the latest link in the arrogance chain. The cartel Don was first, killing Gus's partner. Gus eliminated him, and then stupidly bragged to the old man, who became the instrument of his destruction.
Whoever it is, we've been dropped a huge clue at the beginning of episode one: He was so scared, he felt the need to get strapped with a machiney. To me, that rules out Skyler and Hank. Slyler isn't scary enough, and you don't try to shoot it out with the DEA. That's a fight you lose 100% of the time.

I agree.
But by "his son," I mean Jesse.
Ultimately, I think that's the relationship that is central to the show and will end up central to its resolution. Either the two will split and be at war with each other, or something really horrible is going to happen to Jesse (likely the result of Walt's manipulation) and it will end up being the thing that finally breaks Walt.

Walt is going to revert somewhat I think... after losing everything. The intro to the first episode has him away from his family on his birthday. He's filled his pockets with dough again though, seeing as he gives the waitress a hundred dollar tip and bought that gun. Interesting to see that he's so far away though.
Actually, IIRC, he is back in ABQ for that episode after having been gone. I think the waitress commented on his NH plates. She wouldn't do that if that's where they were.
The hundred dollar tip may not mean he's flush, it may mean he's fucked and going to die.

The show hasn't been the same since Gus left.

Great show, but I still want to fast-foward past the bits involving Walt's wife & kids.

Ah... I misinterpreted it then. Thanks for clearing that up.
He's definitely fucked... the way the gun dealer acted was pretty supportive of that assessment

I don't mind the wife, she's believable, and brings something to the story, the kid however... in a show with this much abnormal stuff going on, did they really need to throw in a handicapped kid? imo the show would have been well served to have a typical teen being the unexpected (and only) source of normal
