A lot of complaining around here for a team that could make the playoffs, plus will have $50mm of cap space (or can retain any of Mills/Gay/Demar, or get back an asset in a S&T for Demar).

Aldridge’s contract was always going to be difficult to trade without taking back money after this year. The Spurs want to keep the books clear.

They'll be lucky to hold off the Pelicans for the play in, they're not a free agent destination and refuse to re-build so they won't rent their cap space by taking dead money for picks and DeRozan could easily sign with a cap space team (they better hope his beloved Raptors aren't interested).

Then why wasn't he either traded a year ago or not guaranteed $17 extra million for what exactly?

I just think we're in desperate need for a new direction as a franchise that has won 5 NBA Championships with 1 happening just 7 years ago. The fact of the matter is that one player single-handedly (well, with his uncle's influence) detonated this franchise and they've been slowly trying to pick up the pieces since then. With DeRozan, it's not a well-constructed team but we had to make due with him under the circumstances caused by that person in question. He's done the best to his abilities but this franchise needs to be lead by a player that is a better fit. I don't believe in the 1 and done playoff appearances as your franchise aspiration for the youth you have on the team. I just don't think that strategy will do the team much good considering the player ceilings might not be enough to be a serious threat for the next several years. When you combine that likely reality with the fact that San Antonio isn't a playing destination for prospective free agents who are increasingly all about the glitter and big markets, we have to rely primarily on drafts and making deals with the future in mind. That we're not doing that right now is very frustrating.

All of this!!

I was writing a TimMVP level article. But it just got messy. I am sure the Spurs main focus in the cap space. They did not want to take on extra salary. Also they could have easily done a Vuc trade with similar pieces in LMA and Poeltl plus 2 firsts. That would mean they were committed to DDR and he was committed to them. If the Spurs were not going to buy, then why not sell. Gay is walking out next season. DDR? If he hinted he is looking elsewhere, you sell him for any asset. If they are not doing either and standing put, then cap space must be there number one priority here. Which means, who are they targeting?

And finally, I see the end of the White/Murray backcourt. If the Spurs get their guy or guys this off season, they are trading one of them for a better fitting piece.

Patty Mills is going to be a rich man this summer.

Lol. $50 million with no free agents to sign. What a predicament.

Here's hoping that the Hawks' ownership finds it difficult to match John Collins' max contract. There is a steep fall in quality from Collins in the list of FAs available (restricted or otherwise) after him. What a shame.

Perhaps the cap space could be used to get some Euroleague players as well - Nikola Milutinov?, Anthony Randolph?, Nikola mirotic (unlikely as he is signed till 2025 for a bankrupt Barca).

At worst, the Spurs could just use some of the cap space to extend their own players - Lonnie Walker and hope the space in 2022 allows them to nab a good FA. So, its back to utilising the draft.

With an inert (inept?) FO which has screwed up or stayed away from trades in the recent past, I doubt they will use cap space wisely enough. Brian Wright seems to be a great talent spotter but a useless negotiator. I think the Spurs are better off hiring someone over him and letting him take care of drafting/ scouting.

OK, general thought on this page. Almost none of this aged well. :lol. The moaning, and bitching just harkens back to last summer when many were SURE that they would re-sign Marco and Forbes.

Yeah, and that's fine. If I was running the organization, I wouldn't give a fuck what others think of how I'm running things and I simply would want to move forward with my plans. DeMar being gone for nothing is the least of my concerns. Just my opinion.

LMA quitting on the team is a blow to this year.

The team struggles when pieces are missing. LMA was not going to provide the effort needed to be a positive contributor in SA anymore. For what it's worth, I don't think DDR has lacked effort the last three years. He's a very good player who is not a premium #1 option given his shortfalls (lack of shooting range/lackluster defense). The Spurs have to acquire the #1 Alpha guy and I'm not sure how that's going to happen given the likely draft assets that will be available. Trading a player plus a pick might work. It's still a crap shoot.

The Mavericks are on top of SA in the standings now (just barely) because they have the #1 option now that the Spurs do not. I don't like their #2-#10 players all that much. They don't really develop their players all that well. The Mavericks tore down the roster for the 2011 NBA champions. The Spurs were the best team in the Western Conference the following 3 years (2011 - 2013 seasons).

Me too but that's not the debate here, it's not what they think about fans opinions. I don't care about that.

Other than that, everybody could have a different opinion that's not a problem but losing derozan for nothing is a one year without developping more some of your young players, plus losing some places at the draft and having nothing in return for your best player.... that's bad imo.

Other than that, everybody could have a different opinion that's not a problem but losing derozan for nothing is a one year without developping more some of your young players, plus losing some places at the draft and having nothing in return for your best player.... that's bad imo.

If what we all think about DeMar is true, that he isn't a good enough player to take your team anywhere... Then his value is low. I think it's obvious his value is low. So when you go in with that view, losing DeMar is not bad at all. It's only bad if you think he was a good player in the first place, just IMO. And I don't think anyone here can say with a straight face that he's a player who will change a team's direction....when he can't even do that for the team right now.

Imo he has some value with what he is producing maybe i'm wrong. I'm not on the bandwagon of Demar is a cancer for this team, imo he is one of the reason why the spurs are not losing more.

We"ll see what will happen next summer, still a lot of time.

Imo when you lose your or one of your best player for nothing that's a fault. Even more if you finish the season planing like last weeks and miss playoffs.

He aged out. Happens all the time. Nobody gets anything worthwhile in a S&T, ever. You need to brace for that.

See, most here see it differently. He’s not a cancer, but he’s an anchor tied to our offense. He pounds the air out of the ball, and only gives it up with like 3 seconds on the shot clock. That also the reason our youglings shoot so mediocre from long. They rarely even have time for an escape dribble.

so maybe having something in return last year would have been good for us even more iif he's not valuable for this team wich i could understand.

I'm ok with an Aldridge 35 yrs old going out for nothing but i think you could have at least a decent thing for demar, i'm good with whatever will happens.

They tried, deadline 2020 with both. The offers were shit. Not stated, but implied. As hinted this deadline, NO ONE wants to help us. There are many FOs that are tired of hearing about the Spurs.

With Reynolds 10 day expiring and as mentioned above with Justin Jackson being waived by OKC, I'd be interested in signing him to a 10-day

NBA Radio on Sirius today was talking about Kelly Oubre being put out that he may be asked to come off the bench when Klay comes back. That may put Wiggins back in play again as the odd man out so like was discussed before the trade deadline, if you can get some assets such as a pick or Wiseman, S&T Derozan to GS for Wiggins and an asset?

They won’t want DeRozan. Subtracting Wiggins and adding DD doesn’t address their logjam. We can just accept Wiggins and assets into our cap space.

He hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire, and they’d have to include a pretty big asset to offload Wiggins horrible contract. They get a Mulligan by possessing Minny’s pick this year. They can try again.

They should do a double sign and trade...DDR for Wiggins and Gay for Wiseman. Both are suspect by value, the first in GS favor the second in SA favor...

I'm just thinking he works where they don't and would be surrounded with knock down three point shooters and their core is not getting any younger, now is the time for them or it is rebuild time. If they want to make another title run, they only probably have a year or two if Thompson and Curry can stay healthy

I'm disappointed no one bitched about dwayne dedmon getting another contract and some dumbass going "signing georgi was a mistake, pop needs to get over himself".

It's also very funny miami thought they'd get disgruntled spur lamarcus and got the poor man version in dedmon lol.

April 9—the last day someone on an NBA contract can be waived and maintain playoff eligibility should he sign with a different team.

Will Lyles be one of those players?

You want us to cockblock the Suns from signing the shitty NBA sibling? It’s kind of their thing. If there are twins, the Suns sign the lesser one. If there’s a marginal/borderline older or younger brother out there? Suns.
