With a potentially dry trade and buyout market, teams are also keeping a close eye on the G League bubble for players to target. One name that’s been mentioned to me in several conversations is Alize Johnson, who starts for the Raptors 905, which is 12-3 and riding an eight-game winning streak heading into the bubble playoffs.

Johnson is a 6-foot-7 wing who was drafted 50th in 2018 by the Pacers and has played in only 31 NBA games. He’s a full-throttle rebounder and defender with the versatility to defend both quicker and stronger players, meaning he could play on the wing alongside a true big or in the frontcourt in switch-heavy lineups. On offense, the 24-year-old is averaging 16.6 points and 4.2 assists while posting career highs in scoring efficiency and assist-turnover ratio.

A league source says in addition to the Raptors, the Magic, Rockets, Spurs, and Suns have also expressed interest in signing Johnson.

He looks like another version of KBD, though not as long (only 6'9" wingspan). Maybe a two way spot for next year?

Well if true, you can eliminate Rockets from the teams interested in Alize Johnson

The Houston Rockets are signing forward Anthony Lamb out of their G League affiliate, Rio Grande Valley, on a two-way contract, sources tell @TheAthletic (https://twitter.com/TheAthletic/) @Stadium (https://twitter.com/Stadium/).

that should be interesting.

they are using that to test the waters for an actual big league team I’m sure. If the development team does well down there can wise I can only imagine how well it would do with an actual NBA team

maybe the league would also make a 3rd league the spurs could play in and avoid west coastal power teams like the east. Maybe a move to 4 regions would make more sense

I wouldn't mind a regional-type setup, where teams take fewer but longer road trips and have longer homestands. imo that would also increase the win% of the home team which should increase attendance, especially for the bad teams.

You might have to overweight out-of-region record in playoff seeding to prevent a weak region from having teams with inflated seeds.

The MC team, playing at altitude 7382, would have a serious advantage over the Nuggets, like 2000 feet. It would be hellish for a sea level team to go straight there.

Primo's passing was awesome and his shot looked good but his intensity, rebounding and defense were bad, as were the whole's team's. It was obvious this group hadn't played a game together. Hope his injury is minor.

Btw, it's quite interesting comparing Primo's play to Jaden Hardy's, who is projected to go top 5 in the 2022 draft, as they have similar profiles and age (Hardy's actually older). Primo doing better, even after a C+ game for him.

well, supposedly the spurs took primo early with the assumption that he would have been a top 5 lottery pick this year if he had stayed another year at Bama so it's a good sign if he is looking better than some of the next draft's cream of the crop.

Wow, I thought you were kidding, but he literally crossed his own ankle when coming down, no interference from the other player (besides guarding the shot, obviously). Definitely worrisome if it's an ongoing trend.

These are the kinds of "basics" that have to be ironed out before he plays in the NBA full-time. Can't have bad fundamentals and body mechanics, especially at such a young age.

The good thing is, the Spurs usually only sign guys to 2 year two-way contracts, so they have a bit of a cushion. They may have a slot next year to convert him like they did KBD last summer. Either Thad will be gone for an ending contract, or he'll roll off this summer, opening a PF slot on the roster. If not, they roll into year 2 of his two way.

Hm... So they didn't have the cap space or exceptions to give them three-year deals. I'm not the biggest fan of this. I guess it's a nice reward to them, and it clears up a potential playoff roster. But they would have had basically ERFA rights on both this summer and the ability to lock either into a long-term deal. Cacok is whatever. I like him as depth well enough, but if he were to get a big offer and walk, I think you'd scratch your head and move on. Wieskamp as a draft pick is something I like a bit less. They'll have RFA rights and the Arenas exception to keep him if he does play well (which is obviously not a guarantee), but a Hinkie special like with Jones or Metu would have been preferable to me.

Hopefully the team signs some two-way guys now. I understand not really caring about 10-days with a young team full of prospects, but they owe it to themselves to at least claim some d-league guards. As I've said before, it's a long-term need.

It’s Fd up, but I see this as Make a wish, letting them ride out the season riding jets and never handing their luggage, then waiving them to sign FA(s) and draft picks, or using them as trade ballast.

The Spurs have signed and waived center Stephen Zimmerman (https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/z/zimmest01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-), according to the NBA’s transactions log (https://www.nba.com/players/transactions).
The seven-footer was selected by the Magic with the No. 41 pick in the 2016 draft out of UNLV, and logged his only NBA minutes to date in 19 games during the subsequent 2016/17 season, averaging 1.2 PPG and 1.8 RPG across 5.7 MPG.
Since his NBA tenure ended, Zimmerman has suited up for G League clubs the South Bay Lakers and Westchester Knicks, plus international clubs in Germany, Poland and Australia.
Joining San Antonio (and getting promptly waived) carves out a path for the 26-year-old big man to latch on with the club’s NBA G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs. Should that happen, and should Zimmerman remain in Austin for 60 days or more, he could earn a bonus worth up to $50K for his troubles.

He was waived 11 October last year, before year 3, and with his track record, there is no way they’d pick up his year 4 option early. They paid him last year, $2.9M, but they’re done paying him. A five year rookie contract is really only two year’s guaranteed, with a series of options, only one of which the Spurs exercised.

Adaway was good, athletic and strong wing. Bassey looked like an NBA player. Barlow is pretty raw, jumpy and rehearsed moves. Don't know the purpose of Alize such a record scratch player even in the G-League. Kuhse was solid, might be a better call up than Hall. Brown is a generic G-league player.

If spurs make some trades at the deadline, do we think Barlow has earned a shot at the big club?

The Spurs pattern in previous years has been to reward Austin players who have put in the time and effort to show progress with a short stay with the Big Club in the Spring. I think they may bring Barlow in after the trade date and give him a few minutes, maye more than a few if they really like him and are seriously committed to the tank.

I’m hoping for the best. I think Spurs are showcasing Poeltl and should see Bassey/Barlow as backup C behind Collins after the trade deadline, assuming Spurs get 2FRP’s for Jak.

Allegedly, even Zach is drawing trade interest. If they were to trade both Zach and Jak..well you wouldn’t want your only NBA experienced center to get injured in a fucking gleague game.

If the Spurs can get another FRP and a lucky unprotected one at that for Zach or Jak or whoever. They should be playing an experimental all-guard small ball lineup in the G-League. And maybe even in NBA games. Anything that can help the Spurs maximise their potential to win the Wemby lottery and/or get a bonus pick in the 2023 Draft should be kosher.

Interesting.

Zack is becoming a solid backup C. I think he can help a contender, but I rather keep him. He’s only 25 and so much more to grow. Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if some teams are interested.

The Truth #6
01-25-2023, 04:34 PM
Depends what the offer is. He has rebounded from injury better than expected, so that’s a plus, but if we get value for him, there’s some intrigue in rolling with Grandpa Dieng and Bassey. In fact, we may need a lineup like that to keep our bottom four spot, because after the All-Star break, I can see a lot of teams going way overboard in the sweepstakes.

Getting rid of a player just to lose games is an awful idea, especially a C. Collins isn't the difference between winning and losing; even if he were, just sit him.

Again, depends what the offer is. Right now he holds little value to us longterm. In fact, trading him for anything would be selling high considering his injury history.

They did some polling and found out practically no one knew it was a Spurs farm team.

Why is that a bad thing? I feel like it helps the Toros if folks are tricked into thinking they play quality basketball. For the big club, it shouldn't make any difference about whether folks know they have a minor-league team, and other sports don't try to have a unitary naming system. Baseball is all over the place. It doesn't matter if Austin is just a farm team, and if they're trying to market it as a product that is supposed to make a profit, then they aren't doing themselves any favors by not allowing it to have a distinct cultural identity or by potentially misleading fans on which team they're talking about. Imagine the confusion if every team did this and you were actually a fan of the Toros in Austin trying to hype folks up for going to the "Mavericks game" only for them to realize you mean a shit game in Cedar Park.

I feel like the name change was from an earlier time when the company was really trying to cash in on the prestige the "Spurs" name had. Like they thought they could pitch the Raiders coming in under the Spurs umbrella. It sounds patently ridiculous, but they seriously thought so highly of themselves that they thought a legendary NFL franchise was going to gain clout by being associated with the Spurs. Different times.

They didn't own the team when it was originally named. People polled also didn't know it was a basketball team.

I think he was signed because he’s a shot blocker in a league that is nearly devoid of them. That hasn’t exactly worked out.

Bediako was with Orlando SL team instead of being with Spurs' one, which was a first sign he was on his way out. With Nathan Mensah likely ending in Austin, trading him away sounds like a logical move.

They're hiring Knicks player development coach Scott King to be their new head coach . . . continuing their long tradition of having the whitest coaching pipeline extant.

Sure, they'll check the token black box with the lightest skinned biracial person they can find, but otherwise they're perpetually lily white.

Johnson and Pride have been traded for future draft picks since that.

Diallo was with Spurs SL team. He was nothing special but it's a good news that Austin Spurs got a decent backup for Mensah. He is Senegalese so there might have some connection between that pick and Guorgui Dieng who is now assistant GM of Austin Spurs.

I have no idea if Steven Richardson is any good.

^ It could be linked to Nathan Mensah leaving Austin to go in Europe. Mensah just signed with Olympiacos, one of the best team in Europe.

Austin Spurs have played a lot of small ball this season. Their starting lineup in their latest game was Bouyea/Flinn/Duke/Minix/Ingram.

I haven't looked their games but Minix is posting some nice stats with them.

Good for Mensah. I'm not sure why he was coming off the bench as well as he was playing. The Toros are seriously height challenged at this point but their four guard rotation is one of the best in the league. I can't expect their bigs to get less raw in time for the showcase. Hopefully the mothership is healthy enough to send Sidy down for the weekend.

Minix plays well but seems a little heavy legged to play in the NBA. I hope he can find a way.

Only one way to find out. After all, Minix can shoot -- 44.7% from three, 54.6% overall and 85.7% from the line.

This might be the least interested in our G-League team as I've ever been. There just isn't a single developmental player to get excited about. They should at least send Sidy down there... what else is he going to do? One area that's going to become more important for this team is scouting for second round prospects. There are quite obviously plenty of them available instead of just punting them away.

It seems to go well in Austin with them being at the top of the Western Conference with a 13-6 record.

What's weird is how little interaction there has been this year between Spurs and their G-league team. 4 Spurs players (Cissoko, Minix, Duke and Ingram) have played in Austin and with Spurs. These 4 players have only played garbage time with Spurs.

I'm not pointing that to trash Spurs. You can't blame Spurs to have drafted with Castle a player too good to need some development in G-league. You can't blame Spurs to have been healthy enough to no need their 15th to 18th players to fill a rotation. You even can't really blame Spurs to have traded the 8th pick given that this trade helped them getting Fox.

It is just strange to think that the whole G league ecosystem with assignments and two ways contracts has been basically useless this year to a rebuilding team like Spurs.

We have Mamu who's a similar archetype, has years of NBA experience and is solid at what he does, but isn't good enough to be a regular rotation member.

I was a little surprised Spurs didn't waived Minix to sign a new player when he was out for the season. It wouldn't have hurt Minix since his contract was guaranteed and Spurs could have re-sign him this summer. Maybe they didn't do it because they feared a team would claim him from waivers.
If it's the reason why they haven't done it, they must be quite high on him.

Coach King & Co. have done a good job filling in the holes from injuries and G-League attrition. They were actually keeping their opponents under 100 ppg for most of the regular season; they're around 103 now which is still impressive.
