Good to hear the d-leaugers will be taken care of. They don't make enough to just stop working for a while. It'll also be nice that if the season returns, the two-way guys will have unlimited call-ups for the rest of the year.

The closer the G-League gets to being a true minor league the better imo. If they can pay enough to get the best players to play there for a year instead of college it's good for the future of the league.

Y'Know, I don't see that. This just seems like a continuation of the coddling that they get all thru AAU. There are actually some great college coaches that can teach a lot, even in one year.

With the SA Spurs underpeforming this season, the interesting part for me was watching to see the development of the Austin guys. Now the rona has put the development on hold. Sucks, I wish they could be getting the reps they need to move forward.

What does the team paying this $300K get? Yeah, Daishen is on the g-league team, fine. But does the NBA team that sponsors said G-league team get any rights ? (Presumably that is where the $300K is coming from- I don't think any of the G-league teams are pulling in enough to pay $300K salaries to players themselves.)

Corporate sponsorship could be it. If Nike is sponsoring the G-League Team, maybe they pay the team more to have that up and coming star on the team? IDK...

The select team is only going to play like 20 games; I guess most will be exhibitions against the other LA teams, teams on LA road trips and the showcase. the Select Team is always league run so there is no NBA team affiliation and no rights anyway since those players are going to be drafted.

Eubanks BBIQ is much higher than Metu's. Most likely Metu want be in San Antonio or Austin next season while Eubanks will be a backup PF/C after Rudy and LMA is gone after next season or during next season after Rudy and/or LMA is traded.

I don;'t think he will. The Spurs definitely still have a chance to make the playoffs. If the Spurs lose today or on Tuesday, I could see Pop playing the young guys exclusively on Thursday.

Going a few tens of pages back on this thread is wack, and hilarious. My god, was it obvious that Keldon was ready for minutes early on. I haven't seen many more obvious blunders in terms of rotations from great coaches than what Pop did to the Spurs this season. Had Keldon, Lonnie, Eubanks, hell even Luka gotten consistent minutes after the ASB, or even a bit before, I'm confident we at least make the POs. At least the Bubble Spurs gave us a glimpse of what could've been, and some much-needed vindication.
In other news, I've heard something about the next year of G-League being in tatters. Is there any word on whether it would be played, if there isn't a vaccine by the time it's supposed to start? Might be the divine help we need to force Pop to play our clearly ready youngings.

Naw, not Austin, the new team.
From the list I saw (Wikipedia), only the Pistons and Nuggets don't have their own G-League affiliate. Does this new team belong to one of them?
Edit: the list also said the Pelicans have an affiliate in Erie PA, but they're getting a new one in Birmingham AL in 2022. It also shows the Pistons getting an affiliate in 2021 that will also be based on Detroit. Erie is pretty far from Denver though.

The thing is, the Spurs have to keep enough players up with the big club to cover any health and protocol issues. In a normal year, I think Q, Tre, and Kieta would all be sent down. Since the gleague season is only 15 games, any player sent to the bubble, and then called up to cover a shortage with the big club, probably wouldn’t have time to re-quarantine and return to the bubble. I’m not even sure that positions matter. Q would be an obvious candidate to send down, but seeing some games cancelled because one or both teams can’t activate 8 players, I think you keep 15 in SA, and Sammich in Orlando.

I'm confused? I thought that Luka was heading down to Orlando and that Q, Bates-Diop and/or Jones were staying with the Spurs?
Jones & Samanic (who both need reps and playing time) are staying in San Antonio, but only are 2 two-way guys are going to Orlando?

Sammich and Jones wouldn’t be listed on their roster, since they’re on the NBA roster, and Q and KBD, on two way contracts, can be listed on the Austin roster, and not play in the bubble at all.

Forget Austin contracts, I’m not even excited about our two ways. Maybe, just maybe Q makes the squad next year if Patty isn’t re-signed and we don’t draft a guard with either of our picks next year. I think KBD was a stop gap cheap signing to fill the roster. He’s 25, and hasn’t really shown anything that says I am an NBA player.

Not going for Tyrese Haliburton last year is a sign to me that theyre doubling down on our current guards and likely won't go for a guard this coming draft either.

I doubt you’ll see many up and down transactions from the Gubble. If you bring someone up, you almost can’t send them back down since the re-quarantine would take a huge chunk of the less than 30 day, 15 game season. I can’t really see any teams bringing players up for any reason other than injury coverage.

Luka's dunk off the dribble hand off/screen - he rolls to the three point line, he doesn't look like he's expecting anything. Is he set for a catch and shoot 3, is he ready to catch and drive? I don't think confidence is his problem. In his head, he should be getting minutes now. It's URGENCY! There is no pride in the details. He's got all the talent in the world! His talent is worthy of NBA minutes, but talent isn't enough. Every sport comes down to talented individuals executing better than their opponent. Is there urgency to get the details executed properly to help yourself and your team win? That is my question with Luka.

I'm always wary of making too many assumptions on my own perception of what their "effort" looks like. To me, he looks really comfortable in those clips, like the game is slowed down for him against lesser competition. He's not out of control on the drive, taking long strides and finishing through contact. I think you're reaching. I don't need the guy to go full sprint on the first step if the lane is open and he knows he can finish through the help defender if/when it comes. His shooting stroke is also very..... lax? He sneaks up on how quickly he can catch and shoot and I think that's part of what has made him dangerous at times in the gleague.

3 Defenders sent to protect the paint on his drive, lane to the hoop gets cut off by the big, Lin comes for double from his blindside, he sees the help defense in the passing lane to his right, makes a fantastic baseline pivot, knows exactly where is man is coming from, protects the ball with his body to keep it away from Lin, makes a perfect pass over to the corner for the 3.

Kid has an elite offensive skillset. It’s defense and rebounding that he needs to work on. He definitely has to dominate in the G-League if he wants minutes with the big squad. Like completely dominate in the bubble, not no 20 point games
Luka averaged almost 8 boards in the gleague, playing about 29 minutes. He’s not shy or ineffective on the glass.

Yeah, that boxing-out (or judo-out :lol) technique ain't gonna fly in the NBA. Still, minor details in the face of surprisingly good highlights from the scrimmage. Any way to catch the Gubble (lol) games like Facebook-watching Austin last season, my guy?
All games except the Feb. 13 one (NBA Twitch, NBA TV) are on ESPN+ :(
Espn is $5 a month no contact. Free is better, but we're talking 1 or two months?

Luka's looking mobile. Can go coast to coast. Had a nice little assist. Needs to stay vertical on defense or he will pick up stupid fouls.

Kelly already has two blocks. Luka would have five points if he didn’t take the ball to the hoop so soft. Dude tried a scoop layup when he had a dunk if he didn’t pick up his dribble so quick.
luka has had some solid passes for assist though.

The guard play is pretty bad for this team. Lots of awful passes and turnovers in the first quarter.
I like that Luka is actually showing a decent energy level and not walking around or sulking.
He has to do a better job of getting low on defense when switched onto guards and when he is trying to post up on offense. Him not getting low and burying the little guys guarding him on the switch is piss poor fundamentals

he is missing a lot of 3 pointers but not badly. Most are going in and out. His shots driving to the rim has got to be stronger though.
you can kinda tell by his body language that his misses are bothering him though. He isn’t afraid to shoot the ball though. Lmao

Good lol we need that kind of attitude versus the other way around
Luka just hit a 3 point shot a couple minutes ago. Dan Wiess and Fabricio Oberto commented on Luka not be afraid to shoot the ball. Lmao. Dude is letting it fly. Lmao.
Still barely boxing out for rebounds though. Smh

I caught the last four minutes. Luka played gutsy! I wish he shot the ball from 3 instead of driving in on that one play. If we're looking at just stats, 17 rebounds is impressive. But again, he seems to be ball watching for the rebound instead of boxing out and letting a teammate get it vs the risk of his man getting beneath him to steal the rebound. What was interesting is they still play him at center when I think he might be better suited for PF. May have been a fatigue thing where it takes a toll on him running around chasing quicker players.

Me too... I really want to find some trade with Sacto that works with LMA that we can get Woodard thrown in on the deal.

Okay, so watching what I missed earlier
There's been a couple times where his man gets by him, which is fine sometimes, but I noticed he doesn't really attempt to swat it from behind.
Also, his decision making near the rim needs to improve. You dont need to shoot it if you're going to be off balance. Dribble it out and then try something. He tries to shoot shit that has no hope of going in.

They could actually work pretty well together if it weren't for the lack of size on each of them. Jones as the floor general and Mills as the microwave is a classic bench combination.
I could see Jones taking Mills's minutes and Lonnie taking Mills's shots.

That's not a bad comp. I think he's got a good bit higher of a ceiling though. His D has the potential to be elite (but we won't ever see that in the G league). I think he will have a better 3pt% than Covington when it's all said and done too. I don't see him as a leader on a team but I do think his floor is a starting 3/4 within 2 years. I don't want to give my ceiling because it'll sound nuts lol... so, I'll stick with (and be happy with) my floor for him.

Yeahhh actually, it does. My advice: watch the game. Then you'll know what I'm talking about. That wasn't a dominant 17 boards by any means. The guards run and the big gets left behind to secure the rebound. It's by design. Luka wasn't toppling over anybody over those rebounds.

Y'all act like I enjoy criticizing our players lmao. I call it like it is. I'm a big Keldon supporter, but he's been shit lately. It is what it is. Luka's numbers today look big on the surface, but they felt empty and his presence wasn't actually felt until he hit those big shots in the fourth. When these kids make an impact, they get their praise. I don't have any attachment to these guys. When they play well, they play well. When you like a player, you're not forbidden to criticize them.

It was a good start for Luka. Far away from a perfect game, esp. shooting efficiency, finishing and boxing out, but he looked comfortable on the court with his teammates. Conditioning and effort were no problem after raising questions about it in his nba minutes. After being blown by the Memphis guards at the beginning he showed quick feet in the 4th quarter. Hit some clutch threes at the end. There were definitely a few things he can build on.
Tre struggled heavily at the beginning, but he improved his defense and his passing later on. My biggest concern with him is his shooting and finishing at the rim.

100% agree.
There's potential here for Luka.
I just finished the game. I stand with everything I witnessed in the 1st Q. Here's more things I noticed:
+I agree that he has a lot more stamina
+His burst/ first step has improved. Very impressive how he can drive to the basket from the perimeter as tall as he is.
-Luka has "Rudy Gay moments" where he falls asleep on defense. Caught him off position a couple times. He exerts more energy when his man has the ball as opposed to someone else having the ball on the opposing team. He needs to watch more Vassell. His help defense needs to improve a ton.
-He is NOT moving around enough for his shots. There was one play too many where he would have the ball on the perimeter, dribble 1 or 2 times, and then launch a 3. This is a big NO NO unless you're a superstar in the league.
-Needs to be smarter on when to jump to block a shot. He had a couple stupid fouls this way. There was a guy attacking the basket who was going 50 mph and he foolishly went in front of him for no reason.
On the other hand,
Tre looks like a legit NBA player. Very, very polished. Knows when to speed up and when to slow down. The offense looked a lot different when he was in. When he was in, he was the general, the head of the snake, the leader. When he was out, it was anything goes for the offense... just drive and kick.

Forgot to mention, Luka's post moves actually looked OK. They didn't look weak going up and I didn't see him be overpowered on any of those post up possessions. A far cry from last year. Granted, he only posted up like 3-4 times?
Edit: although the opposing team DID play small so it's no surprise I guess that he wasn't overpowered.

I'm not dedicated/have the free time to check them out later, I'd probably end up watching the first or second ones and then nothing else :lol I'll keep it in mind though, in case Luka really starts breaking out... I agree. He didn't look that impressive during the moments he was put in the line-up on the main team. I do think it has something to do with the line-up around him. The players he's with on this Austin Spurs team can run and gun with him. With Aldridge, those kinds of opportunities are nil.
We have to make room for this guy in the rotation next year. With DJ's newfound scoring ability, there's definitely enough flexibility to fit him in as a PG during certain times. I imagined Lonnie in this role, but Tre is making a strong case.
Murray/ Tre Jones*
Vassell/ White/ Q
Keldon/ Lonnie/ Wagner/ KBD
Collins/ Gay/ Samanic
Poetl/ Eubanks/ Dinos Mitoglou
*Of course, just because I placed Tre as the sole back-up to Murray doesn't mean he's the only one who can have PG duties. A lot of shuffling can be done in the rotation with this type of roster.

My biggest concern with him is his shooting and finishing at the rim.
spot on with your assessment!! I agree with everything you posted
Luka has really good quickness but his technique when guarding on the perimeter is poor. He has to bend his knees and get a little lower, don’t stand so upright and he will do ten times better guarding the point guards and wings. His conditioning is also better than last year by a lot. He definitely looked a little winded at times but not totally gassed and he damn near always gave his all on both ends of the court which is a serious improvement from last season
Trey got better as the game progressed and did a great job setting teammates up and sharing the ball. He has to get better shooting and finishing at the rim though. Dude is very good at setting up teammates though.

Tre has alot of ability but, the thing that will make or break him will be his ability to knock it down from 3. If that part of his game develops he'll be a solid pro.

Thanks guys for the write ups.
An underrated development in Luka's progression may very well be Austin HC Matt Nielsen.
I used to watch a lot of Matt when he played in the NBL and for the Boomers. He was very much an old school '4' whose skills developed enough to allow him to have some stretch the floor viability.
He was never the most athletic guy. But he was tough, smart, skilled and was never outworked in a contest. You would always feel pretty confident with him out on the floor, that you were not going to lose due to a lack of competitiveness/determination.
Playing the same position (albeit different styles), may help Luka fill in some of the holes in his game that Matt made a successful career out of.

Yeahhh actually, it does. My advice: watch the game. Then you'll know what I'm talking about. That wasn't a dominant 17 boards by any means. The guards run and the big gets left behind to secure the rebound. It's by design. Luka wasn't toppling over anybody over those rebounds.
Rebounding is desire. Dennis Rodman, probably the best rebounder of the 40 years I’ve followed the NBA, rarely boxed out, and no one would teach a youngster to tip the ball up four or five times until you get it as good rebounding technique. It’s about getting the ball, kind of like the old gem about the best play in basketball: put the ball in the hole.

“My role was just to be active and as a big guy, rebounding is my responsibility,” said Samanic. “And then when your shot is not falling, there’s other ways to contribute.”
“It’s always a matchup nightmare for whoever is guarding him,” said Jones of his teammate Samanic. “He’s 6’10-6’11, has guard skills, he can post up back to the basket, he can shoot it and he can put it on the ground. He can really do everything... Just trying to get him in those positions where it’s easy for him to be successful.”
Luka starting to get it. Understands what will get him on the floor at the big club - Defense, Rebounding, Hustle. You can still play even if your shot isn't falling.

To be fair, Woodard didn't actually shine when he got NBA minutes. Same as Cam Reynolds. We need to look at ability rather than production when scouting the gleague.
All true. I was simply thinking of position of need for team.

Man, if he can bring that sort of effort (and skillset) while improving his efficiency then we might have something.
I just want the kid to be a more athletic, poor man's Gallinari and I'd be happy as a pig in shit.

In projecting the '18 draft, I didn't think Walker would be available at 18 and viewed Thomas as a potential candidate. He battled injuries over 2 seasons with the Pistons, but I'm still intrigued and ironically think he has a chance to be something of a Walker replacement in the future.
Jones can't be a Mills replacement because this team can't afford to sacrifice any more 3-point shooting.
His biggest obstacle is the team he plays for..

Highlight reel. Never fall in love with them. He had some non-effort, too.
More athletic? He’s fucking 6’10” and has a 38” vert. To put that into perspective, Kawhi’s Max vert was 28”, and no one complained about HIS athleticism. Lonnie is like6’4”, and his max vert is 40”. People think he’s crazy athletic.

As long as he is working on his craft and buying into Spurs culture and making improvements I am all in for him staying a Spur. But I do agree there were times he was not running the floor like he should maybe do to conditioning since he hasn’t played hopefully as he plays mod games we will see him improve.
Thanks For The Vids Ace - Much Appreciated :bobo

Right, I'm sure he still had issues with his efficiency, effort and focus but we need that type of game desperately (or eventually) on this team.
No, I meant more athletic than younger Gallinari (but a poor man's version of his game) not that he needs to become more athletic. Like you pointed out he's already plenty athletic & that is what stands out about him.
His first step is extremely impressive and he can jump out the gym for a 6'10 or 6'11 guy.

Samanic has great horizontal fluidity. You can see what the FO liked in him. Not sure he has much vertically, but that can be worked with.
Tre comes in with good defensive and team-running capabilities. If anything this era's shown us, it's that players can learn how to shoot. His brother already is pretty good in that regard. Teaching defense is hard, teaching to run a team is extremely difficult.
BG_Spurs_Fan

Love Tre's savviness, he looks more advanced than expected at his age and his finishing in traffic is surprisingly good, however he really needs a jump shot. Don't think he hit a single one in this game.
Luka continues to flash that potential. It'll be so frustrating if he can't put it all together, because his shot looks so effortless and his ability to drive from the perimeter is so rare for someone who's near 7 feet tall. His struggles seem to be mental, the skills are all there.
Next year will be the year for Luka to show what’s he’s got, with LaMarcus moving on (not to mention he’s playing for an extension). He looks comfortable out there, which leads me to believe that it’s largely mental for him when he’s on the big team.

Looking at the condense game Luka seems to have a chance of being our big with inside and outside threat. However his defense still requires a lot of work, seen a few occassion he either help too early leaving his guy wide open at the rim or he just stand there looking at guards run to the rim unoppose failing to provide help defense.
SpursDynasty85
02-11-2021, 10:34 AM
Athletically and size-wise, he was a standout but feel for the game is just not there. I watched about half the game which were his least productive parts of the game. His screens seems to hinder movement more than create it and he mainly rolled directly to a very predictable part of the 3 point line where when he got it, the ball stopped and clanked a lot of stagnant 3-pointers. His drives to the rim were constantly being knocked out of his hand or thrown up without patience/finesse/or physicality. Defense was average. Was relatively active but seems to get easily drawn into fouls by quicker guards (very worrying for his type of game). Looks like his skill and size allows him some great spurts just like the first quarter and the last 3 minutes of the game. Hopefully his feel for the game and chemistry with Tre increases for the season. If anything, Tre Jones for the opportunity to play with Luka is a great opportunity.

I'd try this . . .
To Hawks: Gordon, Bacon
To Magic: DeRozan, Walker IV, Snell
To Spurs: Collins, Fournier, Ennis III
Works as of February 23rd, when both Ennis III and Bacon become eligible.
Then immediately reroute Fournier for either draft capital or an inexpensive, controllable young player.

Talks of "lack verticality" when a guy is 6-11 standing reach of 8-11 and a Vert of 30+ inches(38) meaning when he jumps his head is at the RIM....
I get it... EYE TESTERS not gonna give this white boy's hops cred until he does a Tom Champersesq donk "IN A NBA GAME"

Same. We're all begging for fast results but if Samanic ever gets it together, he would be a lethal offensive weapon.
If we all think about DJ and what he flashed during his first two years, it was extremely raw and you really didn't know what he would give you offensively besides acrobatic layups. With Samanic, we kind of know: 3s and explosive driving ability. At his size, that's a unicorn.

Couple of questions what position do you see him getting major minutes he is 6’11+ so is he a full time PF or does Pop play him at Center and PF?

I see him as a full time PF in the NBA, but if his effort and rotations are not there then he looks like a C. I'm excited to watch tonight and see if he improves upon moving around the court a bit more, being attentive on weakside help, and boxing out.
