I would love Little honestly; flaws and all. Read that his shooting concerns were somewhat squashed during workouts. Had a dream that Timvp was giving a lecture pre-draft and said Samanic was the best player in the draft :lol

By Jeremy Woo

19

Nic Claxton
F/C | Georgia | Sophomore
San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio Spurs

Claxton opted to end his workouts for teams early, and, feels secure with where he stands range-wise going into draft night, per a source. That range now begins somewhere in the teens, as he’s been one of the more notable risers during the past six weeks, and has been able to showcase his versatility and tools during workouts. There’s some real optimism around the league that he can do some ball-handling and become uniquely useful on the perimeter as more of a forward than a center. His defensive capabilities are also extremely promising, as he’s mobile enough to switch on the perimeter and also help on the inside.

Claxton is just starting to tap into his ability, and finding someone with his upside in this range of the draft is appealing. He feels like a Spurs-y project, and San Antonio needs to get younger up front. It’s worth noting two names that come up frequently in connection with the Spurs are Nassir Little and Luka Samanic—they might have to move up a bit from here to grab Little, and Samanic could be available at No. 29.

29
Luka Samanic
F | Olimpija | International
San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio Spurs (via Raptors)

Per sources, the Spurs are among the teams who have shown real interest in Samanic, and while he could feasibly be in play for them at No. 19, if he falls this far in the first round, this spot could be a match. His mixture of skill level and size at his age help set him apart from the pack, the hope being that he develops into a useful stretch big who can play a variety of roles, and even playmake a little bit on the perimeter.

Samanic has to keep getting stronger to handle the physicality of the NBA, and he probably needs a year to get up to speed, but his talent level is certainly evident. I’m told he intends to come over and be a roster player next season, as opposed to being stashed in Europe for another year. He fits the Spurs to a T.

49. San Antonio - Tremont Waters, PG, LSU

Waters’s impressive basketball IQ and overall chops that belie his small stature make him an interesting fit if he slips to the Spurs here—it’s possible he goes in the 30s. Second-round ranges tend to skew wide. This would still be a nice fit.

The Spurs lack depth at power forward and with LaMarcus Aldridge quickly approaching his mid-30s (he'll turn 34 in July), they should turn to the future. Hachimura has guard skills but can play either forward spot, and his competitiveness could give him an edge to play early.

The Spurs need also to address their depth at center, where Jakob Poeltl and Drew Eubanks were both stretched past what they should have been last season. Fernando can be an instant impact player at the position who can bring intensity, rebounding and a physical post presence that would play well off LaMarcus Aldridge.

The Spurs' success over the years has come largely as a byproduct of success in the draft. Getting Nowell would continue that. He was the best player in the Pac-12 last season and was one of the big risers in the pre-draft process after a really strong combine showing.

19. San Antonio Spurs: F P.J. Washington, Kentucky. He can help a playoff team right away with his length and versatility as both an offensive and defensive player.

29. San Antonio Spurs: C Luka Samanic, Croatia. He’s viewed as a high IQ and skilled big man and the Spurs are the kings of taking fliers on international prospects in that mold.

19. San Antonio Spurs

Goga Bitadze
Buducnost
Age: 19.9
C

Height: 6-foot-11 | Weight: 251

With LaMarcus Aldridge entering his mid-30s, the Spurs don't have much in the way of frontcourt building blocks on the roster at the moment, outside of Jakob Poeltl, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract after playing just 17 minutes per game last season.

Enter Bitadze, who has been extremely productive at the highest levels of competition outside the NBA in the Euroleague. His excellent skill level offensively -- including his budding ability to stretch the floor -- is attractive, given his combination of size and reach, especially since he has yet to turn 20.

29. San Antonio Spurs (via Raptors)

Darius Bazley
Team: N/A
Age: 19.0
F

Height: 6-foot-9 | Weight: 208

The Spurs don't have a great deal of depth at the forward spots, and they can afford to roll the dice a bit this late in the draft on an upside-laden player in need of development.

Bazley has had a terrific pre-draft process in which he has demonstrated an improved frame, a more consistent shooting stroke and a more polished and refined skill set than you would expect considering his age and the fact that he sat out the season. Bazley's potential as a multiposition defender who can handle the ball in spurts and make an open shot is intriguing considering his size.

49. Spurs

Jalen Lecque | PG/SG | Age: 19.0 | Brewster Academy

19. Spurs - Goga Bitadze, PF/C, Republic of Georgia

Bitadze has proven himself as a quality talent overseas. He's a big man who can shoot from beyond the arc and should space the floor nicely. He's not said to be a great defender but is crafty on the offensive end and seems like the type of project that head coach Gregg Popovich could flourish with.

29. Spurs (via Raptors) - Darius Bazley, SF/PF, USA

Bazley was a McDonald's All-American and five-star recruit coming out of high school. It's been a rocky road for the high school phenom since then - he committed and decommitted from Ohio State, then committed and decommitted from Syracuse, then elected to spend a year in the G League before changing his mind again and using the entire year to train for this upcoming NBA Draft.

He's a 6'10 athletic slasher who has some touch from midrange and the perimeter. He's a versatile defender and good rebounder and is a threat in transition as a ball handler or runner.

Bazley is a project, but the Spurs could use some depth at forward and he can truly play the 3 or the 4 at the next level. It's a low-risk/high-reward pick for San Antonio this late in the first round.

19. San Antonio Spurs: Goga Bitadze, C, Georgia, 6-11, 1999.
The Spurs need to add some young talent up front, and Bitadze is a skilled, although not overly athletic big man.

29. San Antonio Spurs (from Toronto Raptors): Zach Norvell Jr., SG, Gonzaga, 6-5, Soph.
Since I have the Spurs going adding size with their earlier pick, they look to add perimeter depth here. The Chicago native has good size for an NBA two guard, is explosive at the rim, but also has a nice stroke from the perimeter.

49. San Antonio Spurs: Admiral Schofield, SF, Tennessee, 6-5, Sr.

This man is a baller. He is smart, can handle beyond the perimeter, plays in this confident style that was different -- materially -- from most other players in college. Weirdly, he came off the bench the entire season at FSU. Kabengele plays both ends of the floor at what I'd grade as a B-plus level. He'll be drafted in the first round because of his size, smarts, soft hands and, mostly, because he proved in April and May that he was underutilized and has more to give than what he was afforded in college.

A spindly power forward who would fit ideally in San Antonio's scheme. But remember, as with many of these picks, we're targeting player slots as opposed to franchise destination. The sleeper name of this draft. Jeffries played at Tulsa, where he didn't even rank as one of the five most efficient/proficient players in the AAC last season. But he stands 6-5 with a 7-foot wingspan and has the specs of an enticing second-round type. Jeffries was a four-year player who worked his way to this point, and it's great to see him regarded almost universally as a second-round pick.

Goga Bitadze
Center Georgia (Europe)
San Antonio Spurs
Stock trend from previous mock: n/a

The 19-year-old Bitadze has been shooting up draft boards of late, as some even have him as a lottery prospect. Once considered an old-school, back to the basket center, he has evolved his game a bit to fit the modern NBA. The Spurs will look to him as a long-term solution at center, hoping he can become the high-ceiling guy he is said to be.

29
Ty Jerome
Guard Virginia
San Antonio Spurs
Stock trend from previous mock: -2

Ty Jerome seems like the type of player that the spurs are always looking for- well rounded players who know how to play a role in a set system. Enter Ty Jerome, a three-year collegiate player who excelled playing a role in a successful UVA system. Jerome should be a nice fit on the Spurs’ bench, though he may struggle to find minutes early in his career.

In the past few months, our outstanding writer Brian Rauf has been doing monthly mock NBA Drafts, each time having intriguing scenarios for projected selections. ....

But rather than go to him again, we here at Busting Brackets have decided to create a team mock draft. 12 of us were randomly given five picks each and did our own simulation from 1-60. There were some surprise picks and players who rose higher/fell lower than expected. After the draft, we each did a write-up (name will be listed by selection) for each player. Here are the guys who participated in this mock draft:
Sam Jarrett – @DennisSmithIII Trenton Corn – @theLob_Trenton
Tristan Freeman – @hoopsnut351 Alex Weber – @Weber2MG
Brian Rauf – @brauf33 Josh Stevens – [email protected]
Lukas Harkins – @hardwiredsports Daniel Benjamin – @ZoneDeeSports
Trevor Marks – @twmarks_ Zac Voynow – @zacvoynow
Jerran Anderson – @heregojayagain Brandon Simberg – @BrandonSimberg
*Brian Rauf was unable to do the write-ups for his players due to the birth of his first child (congrats!!!). Tristan Freeman wrote for his picks.

49. San Antonio Spurs – Yovel Zoosman (Marks)

If the San Antonio Spurs have a draft pick, let alone three, it’s all but a guarantee that one (or more) of them will be spent on an overseas talent that can be stashed for a year or two, considering the front office’s extensive history of drafting international talent year after year. Yovel Zoosman stands out as a prime candidate for the Spurs at No. 49, both for the international ties and his legit skill level.

The 21-year-old Israeli wing is currently averaging 5.7 points (.455/.361/.736), 2.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game in just over 20 minutes a night through 71 games with Maccabi Tel Aviv, getting real minutes for one of the better teams (in one of the better leagues) overseas. He really stood out for Israel at the 2018 FIBA U18 Championships in Germany, sporting averages of 14.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.6 points en route to a championship title and MVP award.
His passing is attractive, as he has an array of passes in his toolbox that he can make regardless of defensive pressure, and he projects to be a fine secondary ball-handler in the NBA. He’s a solid shooter and defender too, making the most of his 6-foot-7 height and supposed 7-foot-1 wingspan. Zoosman would be a fine pickup for any team, and he makes so much sense for San Antonio here at No. 49.

29. San Antonio – Talen Horton-Tucker (Harkins)

The Spurs have a tremendous reputation in the draft but I wanted to venture away from the common mock draft stereotype of the franchise selecting an international prospect. At 6-foot-4 with a ridiculous 7-foot-1 wingspan, Talen Horton-Tucker is a tantalizing member of this class. As just a freshman during this past campaign, the 18-year-old immediately made an impact at the Big 12 level, averaging in double-figures as a scorer. He is a solid creator for a shooting guard and attacks the basket tremendous well as a result of his strength and size. He is not the quickest defender in the class but often makes up for this with his length.

19. San Antonio Spurs – Goga Bitadze (Weber)

My pick for the Spurs is like every 23-year-old’s favorite mixed drink: totally exotic. Bitadze isn’t a sexy name on bustingbrackets.com–a college basketball website–because, um, he didn’t play college basketball. Nonetheless, I’m taking Bitadze for San Antonio because 1.) It’s totally a move Pop and the Spurs would make, and 2.) Bitadze has top-end upside in this draft. Goga is a 6’11 lanky center who can protect the rim, knock down spot-up threes, and score with ease around the rim. The Georgian oozes elite two-way potential at the center position. Three-pointers and shot-blocking, what more could you ask in a modern center? Most teams in the NBA are starving for big men with even one of those traits, much less a combination of both.

19. San Antonio Spurs: Nickeil Alexander-Walker, SG, Virginia Tech

Alexander-Walker’s decision to return to the Hokies for his sophomore season was a good one. He helped the Hokies reach the Sweet 16 for the second time in school history by averaging 16.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists a game. The 6-5 Alexander-Walker is versatile, with the ability to play at both guard positions and can defend at least three positions. Scouts like his cerebral approach to the game and desire to learn.

29. San Antonio Spurs (from Toronto): Bruno Fernando, C, Maryland

The athletic Fernando is a 6-10 runner who can get out on the break and finish at the rim. He has developed into an effective threat in the post, using his footwork to establish position for a nice jump hook and drop step.

Written by Tyler Metcalf (@tmetcalf11) on 18 June 2019

19. San Antonio Spurs: (PF) PJ Washington

Team Needs: Shooting, Frontcourt depth, Versatile defenders

The Spurs have a young, promising guard rotation, but their frontcourt is much older and one dimensional. Washington is a very intelligent player that can do a lot of different things on both ends of the floor. He is strong enough to guard post players and agile enough to switch onto guards. He isn’t great at creating his own shot but can finish inside or knock down jumpers. His rebounding and work rate would be a great fit in San Antonio as they continue to rebuild.

29. San Antonio Spurs: (F) Luka Samanic

Team Needs: Shooting, Frontcourt depth, Versatile defenders

The Spurs have had great success with foreign-born players (not the only reason this is the pick) and they need additional help on the wing. Samanic was projected as a mid-second round pick, but after he dominated his first (and only) game at the combine he shut down his workouts. This suggests that he received a promise from at least one team. Samanic is a three-level scorer but despite his size, he won’t push opponents around. Samanic uses his agile footwork to create space in the post and on the perimeter. He is a good shooter and has the potential to be a consistent playmaker as well. He has a way to go defensively, but if he gets stronger, he should be more effective.

I doubt he's getting a ton of insider info from the Spurs when he came out and said that the name on the back of the jersey was more important than the name on the front during the Nephew saga last year.

From Amico Hoops, “Of the three, Smith is generating the most interest. The Boston Celtics don’t want all three of their picks (Nos. 14, 20 and 22). The Miami Heat may not want theirs (No. 13) and have actually spoken with the Cavs about Smith. The Trail Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks are also said to be dangling their first-rounders.”

I really hope spurs very active in this draft trying to get another all star/very good established player or the opposite go for rebuild, my rebuild ideah:
Trade LMA for the fourth pick
Trade DeMar DeRozan to Miami for Whiteside and #13, trade #13 and #29 to Washington for #9
With picks #4, #9, #19 draft DeAndre Hunter, Sekou and Kabengele
Trade Jacob and Patty Mills in a salary dump to Atlanta
With the cap space go after Brogdon, offer him at least 20million
Spurs rotation next season:
Brogdon/Murray
White/Walker
Hunter/Sekou
Kabengele/Sekou
Whiteside/Kabengele

At this point, I'm almost certain the Spurs will select Samanic at 29 if he's still available. Feels too much like Bertans back in 2011.

19
Keldon Johnson
G/F | Kentucky | Freshman

San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio Spurs

Johnson's draft stock has been stabilized by his intangibles, and teams think his competitive makeup bodes well, giving him a good chance to find a useful role somewhere and add value. Johnson isn't a great off-dribble creator, but he's strong, can score at all three levels, and defends willingly. He won't be a sexy pick, but he might be a pro for a long time. His no-frills approach would fit well in San Antonio.

It's worth noting two names that come up frequently in connection with the Spurs are Nassir Little and Luka Samanic—they might have to move up a bit from here to grab Little, and Samanic could be available at No. 29.

I'm told he intends to come over and be a roster player next season, as opposed to being stashed in Europe for another year. He fits the Spurs to a T.

49. San Antonio - Tremont Waters, PG, LSU

Waters's impressive basketball IQ and overall chops that belie his small stature make him an interesting fit if he slips to the Spurs here—it's possible he goes in the 30s. Second-round ranges tend to skew wide. This would still be a nice fit.

Los Angeles Times: NBA mock draft 2019 results: Reporters make their first-round picks
By Dan Woike

With the NBA draft on Thursday at Barclays Center in New York, reporters who cover their teams on a daily basis take their turn at predicting how the first round will unfold in the Los Angeles Times’ annual beat writers’ mock draft.

Each reporter makes a pick and gives a rationale for that selection.

No. 19 San Antonio Spurs | Kevin Porter Jr., SG, USC, 6-6, 218

“Porter has lottery talent and elite athleticism, but off-court issues during one rocky season at USC has him sliding down draft boards. His upside is definitely worth the dice roll if he drops to 19.” — Jeff McDonald, San Antonio Express-News

No. 29 San Antonio Spurs | Terance Mann, SG/SF, Florida State, 6-7, 215

“I could see the Spurs going with a draft-and-stash Euro here, but failing that, Mann would be a good choice. The Spurs were relatively atrocious on D last season, and the FSU wingman would fill a void on that end of the floor.” — Jeff McDonald, San Antonio Express-News

NBA mock draft: Zion Williamson and Ja Morant know where they’re going. Then it gets interesting
This is our NBA final mock draft for 2019.
By Ricky O'Donnell Jun 19, 2019, 7:00am EDT

19. San Antonio Spurs - Keldon Johnson, G, Kentucky

Johnson is a jack of all trades and a master of none. Kentucky’s freshman wing has good size at 6’6, shot 38 percent from three, and has enough athleticism to hold his own as a defender and half-court scorer. He’d give the Spurs a young wing to develop with their first of two first round picks.

29. San Antonio Spurs - Darius Bazley, F

Related
Darius Bazley’s bizarre path to the 2019 NBA Draft is about to be tested

Bazley was a McDonald’s All-American out of high school who chose to sit out the season and train for the draft rather than honor his commitment to Syracuse. The lack of information available makes him one of the hardest players to evaluate in this draft. He has great size for a combo forward at 6’9 with a 7-foot wingspan and a reputation for being able to shoot the ball. The need for big wings who can potentially defend a variety of positions and stretch the floor on offense might be enough to push Bazley into round one.

29. San Antonio Spurs: C Luka Samancic, Croatia. He’s a high-IQ international player who can help right away. Sounds like a Spurs draft pick.

By: Liam McKeone | 20 hours ago [AKA 18 June 2019]

19. San Antonio Spurs: Goga Bitadze, C, KK Mega Bemax (Georgia)

This year’s mystery foreign big man goes to, you guessed it, the Spurs. Bitadze is a talented offensive big man with a soft touch, with a variety of ways to score down low. He’s also the best screener of all big men in this class, exhibiting a talent for positioning and dribble hand-off moves that younger players at his position tend to struggle with.

He has a long way to go on defense, and likely won’t ever be an elite rim protector or quick enough to switch onto guards. One need to look no further than Denver or Portland, though, to find examples of teams successful with a talented offensive big man doing just enough to stay in the game on defense. The Spurs will need a long-term option in the front court to match their exciting core in the backcourt, and Bitadze should be a great PnR option in San Antonio in short order.

29. San Antonio Spurs: Dylan Windler, F, Belmont

The Spurs double down on their front court influx of youth, nabbing a potentially elite shooter in Windler with the second-to-last pick of the draft. Windler shot 42% from deep on seven attempts per game at Belmont, and his knockdown shooting should translate at the next level.

He’ll never be an elite offensive threat, but he showed flashes of solid attacking off the dribble and passing. Windler will need to put a lock of work in on defense to stay in Coach Pop’s rotation, but he could be a great frontcourt partner and much-needed spacer for LaMarcus Aldridge.

19. San Antonio Spurs – Goga Bitadze, 6-11, 251, C, Georgia

Bitadze is a skilled big man who can help the Spurs up front — which is important considering they don’t have much beyond LaMarcus Aldridge and Jakob Poeltl. Bitadze averaged 12.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in the Euroleague and has shown the ability to knock down mid-range jumpers with ease.

29. San Antonio Spurs (via Toronto) – Ty Jerome, 6-5, 195, G, Jr., Virginia

The Spurs could use some help at the point, and Jerome is a guy who can run a team, make shots from all over the court and also bring toughness to the table. Jerome may never be a star, but will be consistent in his production and effort.

Teams wouldn't necessarily want Beli, unless they were trying for an ending contract to cut long term payroll, but both Bertans and Forbes could be moved, depending on who they might want to move up for. They have enough guards, so Forbes is an asset that could be traded, and you just don't see a lot of 6'10" guys with buttery smooth jumpers like Bertans.

No. 19 | San Antonio Spurs
Brandon Clarke | F | Gonzaga

Regardless of his size limitations, Clarke is primed to be a difference maker in the paint. His instincts as a shot blocker and rebounder are undeniable. Clarke’s energetic legs should take some of the burden off LaMarcus Aldridge.

No. 29 | San Antonio Spurs (via Raptors)
Matisse Thybulle | G/F | Washington

The Spurs turn to the defensive side of the ball for the second time in the first round. Thybulle will give opposing wings fits from the first time he steps on the floor. However, his lack of scoring could hinder his value in today’s NBA.

19. Spurs - Nic Claxton, Big, Georgia

Height: 6-11 | Weight: 217 | Age: 20.2

With Dejounte Murray, Derrick White and Lonnie Walker on the roster already, the Spurs have allocated plenty of their recent assets toward improving their backcourt. It will likely make sense for them to go in a different direction in 2019.

Claxton would be one such option, and given how much his draft stock has improved during the pre-draft process, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in the teens here. He has real defensive versatility at the center spot, which is a prized trait, plus the potential to do some ball handling in transition in time.

Claxton's a unique big man, and winning teams benefit from having those types of players on the roster.

29. Spurs - Luka Samanic, Big, Olimpija Ljubljana

Height: 6-10 | Weight: 210 | Age: 19.5

As mentioned previously, the Spurs are seemingly set in the backcourt having made a number of selections to bolster their forces there in the past few drafts. Samanic provides another skilled frontcourt option for them.

He impressed during the lone scrimmage he played at the NBA Draft Combine, should be able to provide some creation on the offensive end and possesses the tools to be a capable defender.

19. San Antonio Spurs — Goga Bitadze, Center, Mega Bemax

Selected by Dylan Carter of Air Alamo

Bitadze is an intriguing big man prospect who should fit well in the Spurs system. On offense, he shows potential as a pick-and-pop threat potentially stretching out to the 3-point line, with excellent touch on vision on his passes to also make a difference as a hub around the elbows to hit cutters and dribble hand-offs. On defense, he’ll struggle in space because of his footwork and lack of athleticism but he uses his enormous wingspan well and should be an effective rim protector. The combination of strengths and weaknesses may keep him from being an NBA star but the Spurs have a history of recognizing what a young player does well and putting them in a position to succeed.

29. San Antonio Spurs — Louis King, Wing, Oregon

Selected by Dylan Carter of Air Alamo

The Spurs have the luxury of staying focused on potential here at the end of the draft and King certainly represents that. He started slowly in his one season with the Ducks because of recovery from a knee injury but King showed a strong shooting stroke of flashes of potential as a secondary-creator. While he has excellent size and length and could become a solid defensive player, a lack of effort and focus at that end hampered his effectiveness. The Spurs have plenty of young depth on the wing but King makes plenty of sense as a player to be patient with, who could pay huge dividends down the road.

29
Luka Samanic
Forward Olimpija Ljubljana
San Antonio Spurs

Gregg Popovich and R.C. Buford got to watch gleefully this past week as their former apprentice led another franchise to an NBA title. In what may not amount to much consolation, the Spurs will get the Toronto Raptors’ first-round pick via the Kawhi Leonard trade.

This is the Spurs, however, and late-round home runs are very much their thing. San Antonio’s current roster is relatively deep and balanced, however they are short on high-ceiling talent. Taking a flyer on Luka Samanic with this pick could be a long-term gain for a team looking for its next-generation star.

Samanic — at 6’11” — has flashed glimpses of being a rangy stretch big. He has fluid movement for a player of his size; runs well in transition, and can put the ball on the floor in halfcourt sets.

But much about Samanic is unknown. Freshly 19, he is both raw and scrawny; he often has difficulty stringing his talents together.

Strength and agility training would appear to do wonders for Samanic; as would being implanted in the Spurs’ culture of seemingly innate success. They have taken a plethora of no-name Euros and turned them in serviceable-to-great NBA players.

San Antonio will likely continue its streak of playoff appearances with (presumably) both their point guards healthy this year. As such, they will be a low-pressure system in which Samanic can be brought along slowly, and learn from a great coaching staff.

He will be of little impact for several years, but the Spurs know that this pick is for the future, not the present, and drafting a high-upside Euro would be so San Antonio.

19
Jaxson Hayes
Forward Texas
San Antonio Spurs

Jaxson Hayes has been trending up in mocks, cracking the top ten of most popular mock drafts. It is somewhat shocking to see him still available, but leave it to the Spurs to mine value from a late first-rounder.

Hayes is very much a project, but the potential results are tantalizing. The son of a former NFL player and college basketball standout, Hayes is an elite athletic specimen. He also grew almost a foot in high school. Not only was he a multi-sport athlete before his growth forced him to commit to basketball, he is still getting used to life in that body.

NBA scouts are banking that Hayes’ skills will continue to grow into his massive upside. With a singular focus and improved coordination, he could become a true two-way threat.

Hayes’ impressive physique and athleticism allow him to be both an excellent floor-runner and physical finisher. His massive 7’3.5” wingspan and high-primacy defense suggest potentially elite shot-swatting.

He is still very raw, and in addition to developing his newly-grown frame, can also polish his fundamentals on both sides of the floor. He may also be limited in terms of shot range and playmaking ability, but his ceiling as a neo-DeAndre Jordan has to intrigue GMs.

Despite his roughness around the edges, there is still so much potential for Hayes. He just turned 19 last month, and has just a couple years of basketball-only training under his belt. Combine that learning curve with his apex DNA, and this pick has all the makings of a post-lottery steal.

Mfiondu Kabengele
C Florida State
San Antonio Spurs

Current Spurs center LaMarcus Aldridge has had a problem fitting into Gregg Popovich offense from the moment he arrived in San Antonio and I think the main reason the Spurs will take the Florida State big man here. Kabengele has the potential to be a defensive powerhouse much in the same way Rudy Gobert has become for the Utah Jazz. He improved his stats from during his two years with the Seminoles and could be one of those mid-to-late first round gems Popovich seems to find during this stage of the draft.

29
Luguentz Dort
SG Arizona State
San Antonio Spurs

With DeMar DeRozan turning 30 soon and Marco Bellinelli already over 30, it would be prudent for the Spurs to take a younger shooter to give them some youth in the backcourt. As we mentioned before, Popovich is a master at finding talent late in the draft and Dort can be a solid contributor off the bench before he becomes a starter. He isn’t the most efficient shooter and struggles from beyond the arc, but the talent development in San Antonio since Pop has been there is one of the best in the league and can mold him into an all-star caliber player.

19. San Antonio Spurs – Luka Samanic (F/C, Croatia)

The Spurs are always tricky to draft for but Samanic makes a ton of sense. He stretches the floor as both a shooter and a passer, operating with impressive basketball IQ and awareness for a young player. There are weaknesses, particularly if you don’t believe in his defense, but this is a marriage of player and team that is easy to embrace.

29. San Antonio Spurs (via Toronto) – Chuma Okeke (F, Auburn)

Okeke may not land in the first round, in part due to the ACL injury he suffered during Auburn’s NCAA Tournament. From a talent perspective, though, he’s one of the 30 best prospects in this draft. In San Antonio, Okeke would be maximized under a creative coaching staff and there wouldn’t be a ton of urgency to rush him back to the court before he was ready to go.

19. San Antonio — GOGA BITADZE, Georgia

The Spurs have some solid pieces on their perimeter, but with an again LaMarcus Aldridge anchoring their frontline, it’s time for a rebuild there. Enter Bitadze, who was impressively productive in the Euroleague and whose combination of shot-blocking and floor-spacing is intriguing.

29. San Antonio — LUKE SAMANIC, Serbia

For all the reasons that Bitadze makes sense in San Antonio, Samanic does as well.

19. San Antonio Spurs — Rui Hachimura

6-8 forward, junior, Gonzaga

The Spurs are a tight-knit group, so it’s always hard to guess their plans. But in conversations with other teams, I’m starting to wonder if they’re the team who has assured Hachimura of their interest, with Wasserman holding him out of workouts and the combine to try and float him down to No. 19. It’s easy to understand why an agency would want their client to be in San Antonio, given their tremendous developmental track record. Additionally, they’ve dealt with international players regularly, and would obviously be very capable in dealing with the unique environment that is the first Japanese basketball star. Given Hachimura’s marketability off the floor, fit is always going to be more important than how high he goes. He’ll make that money up with ease in Japan.

It’s also worth noting that the Spurs are thought to be interested in Goga Bitadze. The team tends to stand pat where it is on draft day, though. It’s an extremely unlikely occurrence that both Bitadze and Hachimura would be available at 19, so these ideas aren’t mutually exclusive.

Hachimura fits positionally for their long-term future at the 4, as an elite frame guy at 6-8, 240 pounds with a 7-foot-2 wingspan. He’s also skilled, with a first step that is terrific for a man his size, and it allows him to get to the basket. As a shooter, there’s a hitch at the top of his release to fix, but his touch is pretty good and at least portends some potential — but he needs to get more confidence from beyond the arc. Defensively, he possesses potential due to his strength and length, although sometimes his feet get a bit stuck in the mud at times and his feel on that end isn’t particularly strong after his prep years of being the primary offensive option with little defensive accountability until he reached Gonzaga. This year, things started to click a bit more on that end, but it remains an open question as to whether or not Hachimura will defend.

29. San Antonio Spurs (from TOR) — Luka Samanic

6-10 forward/center, 19 years old, Petrol Olimpia

This is a critical draft for the Spurs as they continue to fill out the younger side of their roster. They have three picks, including two first rounders. With the backcourt of the future looking set with Dejounte Murray, Derrick White and Lonnie Walker, the team can look toward the frontcourt to try and find players that fit the Gregg Popovich and R.C. Buford mold. Samanic is the kind of high IQ, high skill player that tends to work there, and he worked out in San Antonio a couple weeks ago. I’d say that right around here is the start of his range, but he’ll likely be taken somewhere in the first round. Offensively, he’s a smart pick-and-roll player who can find the soft spot in the defense and make plays both shooting it and passing it. On defense, he’s versatile enough to guard on the perimeter, and has improved his bulk enough to not get completely overpowered inside. Depending on who is still available at 19, I think Samanic could legitimately be in play there, too.

49. San Antonio Spurs — Jontay Porter

6-11 center, 19 years old, Missouri

The Spurs were big fans of Porter last year, and still value big men at a level commensurate with taking two of them in the same draft. He’s suffered two straight ACL tears, but when he’s on the floor Porter displays a high level of IQ and terrific potential shot-making ability above the break. Much in the same way as Reid, his smooth shooting stroke has real potential to warp defenses, as does his passing ability. But to get a chance to do that, he has to get a clearance from NBA doctors and get back on the floor.

The one thing I noticed that needs to be corrected -- he has a hitch at the top of his release point which caused a couple of his late game shots get blocked.

At 49, he would absolutely be worth the risk. If he manages to come back from the injury and comes anywhere near his potential, I don't think he's loyal to the Spurs for giving him a shot. But there's a lot of talent there for a 49 pick.

I am still hoping that we can get Okeke. I would rather have him at 29 than Porter at 49, and limit our MASH unit to one body.

Did you mis-type or get auto-corrected on the bit about not being loyal to the Spurs?

The kid is either really tall or Zion is really...

They swear he measured 6'5 1/2" at USA Camp last year, which translates into 6'7" with shoes which is the way everyone is listed on rosters. They also swear that he weighed in at 285, but I can't see an ounce of fat on him. I don't get it.

He also broke Duke's all-time vertical jump record. There's a video of him at Duke's combine, where he maxes out their Vertec, with some to spare. I don't know where the bottom was set, but he clearly jumped higher than they expected.

I was replying to a comment about Jontay Porter. And I'll be the first to admit that I don't know shit about the kid personally. But I've seen and read a few interviews. I got the idea that he knows how talented he is/was, and was pretty full of himself and thought he was a better player than his brother. If he's never had an injury, he probably would have been at least a lottery-level talent, if not in the upper part of the lottery. So if he comes back from the injury and plays up to the promise of his talent, he would be an incredible steal... but less so if he immediately started courting big market teams, and the money he should have been entitled to.

Like I said, I don't know anything - that's just a lot of reading between the lines on my part. But I still think it's another risk factor in drafting him. You can't really worry about stuff like that, though.

I hadn't really thought about it, but you're right. Drafting two gimps in one year seems a bit reckless. I guess if they both pay off, it would be a real win though.

Watch Spurs give up an asset to trade down 2 spots :lol

I hope they won't, but something like Beli and 19 for Crowder and 23 could end up being a decent deal, especially if the Spurs want Samanic. Luka is most likely to be there at both spots, while a bunch of the Spurs' other potential targets could already be gone by 19. Memphis needs a two-guard so they may well want to hop up and grab one before Boston's two later picks. This could satisfy TheGreatYacht (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=43719) too by potentially hurting the Spurs on the court, and we all know that's important.

Pretty sure that's what they're actually talking about. BM20 was making a joke. Certainly, if the team can move up somewhat painlessly, it makes sense to do so to lock in the guy they want. I'd really like for them to get in front of Brooklyn and GS.

Sure. But I tend not to envy the Sixers' picks much. And they have no many needs that they likely aren't targeting the same guy as the Spurs anyway. Marks has shown to be pretty good at drafting so far, and GS seems like they could play the long game with Okeke. Actually, they already bought 41 from ATL, so I'm not sure what's going to happen with their first-rounder.

Sure they can. But likely they won't because they won't pull the trigger on your first trade until that pick comes up. If they traded say Bertans and 29 for Simmons and 24 right now, then they could trade 19 and 24 for 11. 12 or 13. It would just be a three-team trade like:

Spurs: 12 and Simmons.

Hornets: 19 and 24

Philadelphia: 29 and Bertans

But I don't think the Spurs can wait until 29 to do all that, because too much will have to already have happened to make it work. At least the part with the Sixers has to be done sight unseen.

You don't have to wait to make these trades in principle. Pretty sure that at this point, you can't actually trade picks, but up until yesterday, you could trade them freely. I fully expect to hear 30 being announced as Detroit's pick rather than MKEs, though maybe they hadn't filed the paperwork in time. Most of the trades that have been announced won't be completable until next month, so they'll be contingent.

As far as what I was saying, I saying saying that it would be hard to make what you said work. It's not. The trade I proposed is very possible. It's just that it's not likely for them to do a trade like that unless the team's agree already. Like if Philly is willing to move 24 only if their guy isn't there, then the Spurs can't count on that pick being there to trade with 19. It's possible that the Spurs and Charlotte (for example) could agree to two trades, one where the Spurs get 24 and one where they don't. Like:

12 for 19 and 24 if the trade with Philly goes through

or

12 and Zeller for 19, Beli and Bertans if Philly backs out

We'll never know all the things teams set up that just don't work out in the end.

Yeah that makes sense now that I think about it. It would be stupid to trade just to move up without actually knowing if the player you want is there.

I like Goga at 19. He's one of the few potential building blocks in this draft, tbh. Some scouts say he's the second most ready player to produce on Day 1 behind Zion. I can't say I disagree too much with that.

But since he's a center, I'd hesitate to give up too much to move up and get him. Unless the Spurs grade him out to be Jokic-lite, probably best to sit tight and hope. If he gets past the Celtics at 14, there are a string of teams that don't really need a center.

the thing is, with horford on the way out and baynes now being shopped around, the celtics really do need a big man. for me the question isn't so much whether or not they'll go big but with which pick and also which big?

---

Don't really like okpala, I don't like guys with elevated Stallone shoes. I'm worried he'll be the guy for Landry Fields

Hachimura gives me a headache on defense. Just seems clueless, and he's had years of great college coaching, it's not like Murray under Romar at Washington. After so much Mills and Marco I am sick of guys who can't defend. There's a clip in the Schmitz ESPN video near the end against Washington where he doesn't even bother helping resulting in a dunk. What they didn't show is that it was the second dunk in a row that he didn't rotate for. The first dunk he was late on, then the ran the same pick and roll and he didn't even bother the second time. Combine that with his bad passing iq, I don't think that's something I'm counting on him to learn at this stage

Re: Samanic, I am suspect of his switching pedigree. Real easy to switch against b-division nobodies in Slovenia and against 2nd round & summer Leaguers at the combine, the NBA is a different beast. Milutinov switched all the time on pick and rolls for Olympiakos and usually with great results. But he was switching guys like Campazzo and a 30 year old Nick Calathes. I don't think Milutinov would be a good switch guy in the NBA and am sceptical of Samanic as well. Claxton I buy, not Samanic.

Ever since the infamous trade, logic has dictated that, barring a repeat of last year when an ideal fit unexpected falls into their lap at 19, they should be trading up . . . and yet, despite clearly having the assets (Heat at 13 and Pistons at 15 are prime targets), I have no confidence in them actually pulling the trigger.

I'm sure they'll get cold feet and play it safe like usual. If they do, I get the sense 19 will be underwhelming. They were lucky to get Murray and Walker where they did (White too, though he was projected in that range), law of averages means it's unlikely to continue.

https://www.atthehive.com/2019/6/19/18683569/2019-nba-draft-prospect-scouting-report-luka-samanic-charlotte-hornets

Heading into the 2019 NBA Combine, Croatian big man Luka Samanic wasn’t regarded as an appealing prospect to most scouts in the association. After all, he was coming off a disappointing year overseas in which his points per game stayed relatively the same even with his increased playing time. Another note worth mentioning was Samanic’s free throw percentage. It dropped off (https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Luka-Samanic/Summary/94639)six percentage points from 78 to 72 percent from the line from 2018 to 2019.
However, despite being the only international player to suit up for the combine’s scrimmage event, Samanic was able to display his skills graciously to the audience in attendance. He scored thirteen points and grabbed seven rebounds in less than twenty minutes of court time. This effort helped skyrocket his draft projection.
During the contest, he looked fluid on both ends as he chased after loose balls and was able to keep his ground defensively. In fact, his day-one scrimmage was so impressive that scouts advised him to not participate in the following games as they didn’t want his recent success to dwindle his newly-found praise.
Last season, Samanic played for the KK Petrol Olimpija over in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Unlike most European NBA prospects, Samanic played in a league that wasn’t regarded as the top league in Europe. As a result, the competition he was matched up against wasn’t up to par as many international prospects before him.
Luka Doncic (https://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/299925/luka-doncic) and Tony Parker (https://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/296723/tony-parker) are prime examples of prospects who played against Europe’s best talent. Even with the lesser skill of competition, Samanic and his club weren’t able to steamroll against the members of the Liga Nova KBM. The team finished (https://www.sofascore.com/team/basketball/kk-petrol-olimpija-ljubljana/6648) in the middle of their league’s standings last season. This mediocre team play lead to only a minuscule amount of attention drawn from international scouts regarding Samanic and his play. Instead, the main interest surfaced around prospects like Goga Bitazde and Sekou Dembouya, who are each regarded as first-round talents in their own right.
This “untapped” evaluation from many scouts makes Samanic certainly one of the most intriguing prospects heading into Thursday’s draft.
Let’s shift gears and talk about his play on the court.
Profile
Height: 6’11”
Weight: 210 lbs
Wingspan: 6’10”
Stats: (Total of 50 games between three teams) 8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 34 percent from three off 1.6 shots per game
Strengths: Inside offense, shooting potential and athleticism
Even though his 210-lb frame is smaller compared to most professional frontcourt players, Samanic is still able to get his way in the painted area. He has a great ability to finish off the fastbreak as through a variety of his floaters and hook shots near the rim.
This also transitions into his post game where he has been proven to be a reliable scorer once he gets a good enough position down low. Although he won’t bully his defenders in the post, Samanic is still able to set himself up for great shot selections in large part due to his above-average ball handling ability.
Fortunately, Samanic is more than just an inside presence offensively.
He has been able to consistently stretch the floor out from three as his deep-range shot reached the highest efficiency in his career last season. These baskets from three come in a variety of ways. he is able to confidently shoot from both catch-and-shoot and shot off-the-dribble. This causes opponents to stay more uptight with him along the perimeter as his sharpshooting ability makes him a threat anytime he has space to let it go from downtown.
Combine this shooting mark with his underrated athleticism and you have a player that, if properly developed, can turn into a scoring machine at the power forward spot.
Samanic uses his elusiveness to get by his opponents who play him closely near the three-point line. This allows him to cut towards the basket, opening up easy opportunities to score near the rim. Having this unique speed gives him the ability to be that elusive player out in transition.
His athleticism expands beyond the offensive end. Despite his short wingspan, Samanic is able to wreak havoc on defense by putting up heavy shot contests from different places on the halfcourt. Using his excellent lateral quickness in the halfcourt, he is able to locate the ball and interfere shot opportunities from baseline to baseline. While shot-blocking has never been a staple of his game Samanaic has made a strong foundation for himself defensively.

All of this!!
