"The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit today overturned a temporary restraining order put in place by a federal judge in Portland removing the legal impediment that was preventing the Trump Administration from sending National Guard troops to Portland.
"After considering the record at this preliminary stage, we conclude that it is likely that the President
lawfully exercised his statutory authority under 10 U.S.C. 12406(3), which authorizes the federalization of the National Guard when 'the President is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States,'" they wrote in their decision.
Yeah, the appeal for an en banc ruling has already happened. We'll see Snake Boy
A judge stood up sua sponte and called for en banc consideration.
I've been given to understand judges generally do that when they're extremely perturbed., is that right?

in the context of ongoing ethnic cleansing in the USA, neo-confederate and neo-nazi attitudes are apparently a net plus for US officers
On February 19, the Observer reported (https://www.texasobserver.org/ice-prosecutor-dallas-white-supremacist-x-account/) that James “Jim” Joseph Rodden—an ICE assistant chief counsel representing the agency in immigration court in Dallas—operates a white supremacist X account named GlomarResponder, based on an overwhelming number of biographical details that the Observer matched through publicly available documents, other social media activity, and courtroom observation. Reached in-person at the time, Rodden said only to “call [his] press office,” and an ICE spokesperson said the agency “will not comment on the substance of this article pending further investigation.”
https://www.texasobserver.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/BeFunky-collage-9-scaled.jpg(Shutterstock, X)
The GlomarResponder account has posted that “Migrants’ are all criminals” and that “All blacks are foreign to my people,” in addition to posting apparent praise (https://www.texasobserver.org/investigation-ice-prosecutor-racist-x-account/) of Adolf Hitler, among numerous other similar posts. Following the Observer’s reporting, the account was set to private, but it is still active and routinely opines on issues including immigration. “How about we deport all the people who don’t belong here, rather than turn nice neighborhoods into third world bug hives,” GlomarResponder wrote on June 28.
It is unclear whether Rodden still works for ICE.

are Nobel Prizes awarded for abusing pregnant women?
Over a dozen women told advocates and their attorneys that they suffered mistreatment and neglect while they were pregnant and held in immigration custody, including “medical neglect” and substandard care during pregnancy and miscarriage, such as being shackled, placed in solitary confinement and fed with poor-quality food, according to a letter sent to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and Senate committees Wednesday.
“The stories that are represented in this letter are just the tip of the iceberg,” said the author of the letter, Eunice Cho, senior counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union’s National Prison Project. “You have women who are talking about being shackled and restrained while they’re actively miscarrying; you have women begging and pleading for things as basic as prenatal vitamins and being denied.”
In addition to the ACLU and its Louisiana chapter, the National Immigration Project, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, the Sanctuary of the South and the Sanctuary Now Abolition Project signed the letter. They are pressing for ICE to identify and release all pregnant women in custody and to refrain from detaining anyone known to be pregnant, postpartum or nursing.
The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to request for comment about the letter. In August, a DHS spokesperson denied allegations of mistreatment of pregnant detainees (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/immigration-detention-human-rights-abuses-report-rcna222499) in a statement to NBC News after a report by the office of Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/immigration-detention-human-rights-abuses-report-rcna222499) found 14 credible alleged reports of mistreatment of pregnant women in ICE custody.

In one case described in the letter, a woman identified as Lucia described experiencing “heavy vaginal bleeding and cramping in the middle of the night” while she was detained at an ICE processing center this year. Advocates said that although she requested immediate medical attention, she was not taken to see medical staff members until the middle of the next day.
“Medical personnel merely took her to a small room, and left her bleeding alone without informing her of what was happening,” according to the letter. “Medical staff did not give her any food, water, or pain medication for several hours. Much later that evening, after a significant loss of blood, Lucia was transported to an emergency room approximately an hour away, with her arms and legs shackled.”
Lucia required a blood transfusion because of how much blood she had lost, and she was informed at the hospital that she had suffered a miscarriage, the letter says, adding that she was then returned to ICE custody, where she still experienced “abdominal pain and heavy bleeding” a month after her miscarriage. Lucia has since been deported, according to the advocates.

Quinn Haberl believes his disability and diminutive stature are precisely why six federal agents (https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2025/10/federal-agents-at-portland-ice-facility-who-are-they-and-what-weapons-do-they-use.html) descended upon him during a protest outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs and Enforcement facility in South Portland last weekend and dragged him into the building.
“I think they wanted to make a point,” said Haberl, who is 4-foot-6 and legally blind. “So they picked the weakest person they could find and made a big show out of it.”
Haberl’s detention Saturday, captured in jarring photographs and video footage, is among the latest instances (https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2025/10/federal-officer-blasts-chemical-spray-into-vocal-but-nonviolent-portland-protester-video-shows.html) of federal law enforcement officers employing aggressive tactics (https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2025/10/federal-officers-delayed-threatened-to-shoot-and-arrest-ambulance-crew-at-portland-ice-facility-report-says.html) against Portland demonstrators who don’t appear (https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2025/10/federal-agents-knock-down-elderly-couple-during-portland-protest.html) to present a clear physical threat.

ICE detains British journalist after criticism of Israel on US tour
British journalist Sami Hamdi was reportedly detained on Sunday morning by federal immigration authorities at San Francisco international airport, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) says that action is apparent retaliation for the Muslim political commentator’s criticism of Israel while touring the US.
A statement from Cair said it was “a blatant affront to free speech” to detain Hamdi for criticizing Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza while he engaged on a speaking tour in the US. A Trump administration official added in a separate statement that Hamdi is facing deportation.
“Our attorneys and partners are working to address this injustice,” Cair’s statement said. The statement also called on US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “to immediately account for and release Mr Hamdi”, saying his only “‘crime’ is criticizing a foreign government” that Cair accused of having “committed genocide”.
The press secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, wrote of Hamdi in a social media post: “This individual’s visa was revoked, and he is in ICE custody pending removal”.

The US Constitution is a set of rules written in English
How do you scan the 1st Amendment (https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/first_amendment)?
Can you point out where it excludes people (other than slaves) of foreign birth, or people detained by the US government?
It really depends on how you define "the people" and if we're going back to the inception of this document, we have to presume the founders meant citizens of the US. I wouldn't twist it to mean all people world-wide who come here to leech off "the people".
Of course I am referring to the Bill of Rights A1.

abusive and inhumane conditions of detention
A new federal lawsuit alleges detained people are suffering from “horrific and inhumane” conditions at the ICE processing facility in suburban Broadview and that the federal government is concealing that mistreatment by blocking elected officials, attorneys and the press from accessing the facility.
According to an emergency 76-page class action lawsuit filed Thursday, detained people at the facility are being denied water, food, medical care, hygiene and other basic necessities in an extremely cramped facility that smells strongly of feces, urine and body odor.
Federal agents there are treating detained people “abhorrently, depriving them of sleep, privacy, menstrual products, and the ability to shower,” according to a news release.
Detained people are also being blocked from making confidential calls to their attorneys — a violation of their constitutional rights, according to the suit.
“This is a vicious abuse of power and gross violation of basic human rights by ICE and the Department of Homeland Security. It must end now,” said Alexa Van Brunt, an attorney with the MacArthur Justice Center.

why are immigration detainees being denied the right to practice their religion?
not hard to imagine the strong pushback it would get from the US government if it were Americans abroad being denied Christianity
For the second time in less than a month, federal immigration officials have refused to allow Catholic leaders to administer Communion to immigrants held inside the Broadview ICE Detention Center near Chicago — even as more than 2,000 faithful gathered outside the facility on Saturday morning, Nov. 1, to pray, sing and demand access for clergy.
Chicago Auxiliary Bishop José María Garcia-Maldonado and Mercy Sr. JoAnn Persch (https://www.globalsistersreport.org/news/chicago-mercy-sisters-deliver-peace-mercy-and-shelter-migrants) led a small delegation toward the detention center's main checkpoint, requesting to bring Communion to the detainees. The group was escorted by Illinois State Police officers who relayed the clergy's request to ICE officials.
"The answer was no," Persch told the crowd upon returning to the outdoor altar, her voice steady but disappointed. "Sisters and brothers detained in this horrendous situation, we asked to come and bring you comfort," she said.

Amid continued directives by the Trump administration to ramp up ICE arrests (https://www.chron.com/politics/article/trump-military-troops-texas-20383743.php), concern is rising within Texas' Episcopalian community (https://www.chron.com/culture/article/st-martins-new-rector-houston-20265769.php) after one of its priests was taken into custody at a Conroe detention center.
A Houston priest shared screenshots with Chron that were posted in the private Episcopal Diocese of Texas' Facebook group for diocesan clergy on Saturday, Oct. 31. The post shared that ICE detained one of its priests and sent him to a detention center in Conroe (https://religionnews.com/2025/11/02/episcopal-priest-detained-by-ice-in-texas/?utm_source=RNS+Updates&utm_campaign=1b1ceebd74-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2025_11_03_03_44&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c5356cb657-1b1ceebd74-127975209), less than an hour north of Houston. The unnamed clergy member is a Kenyan national, the diocese detailed, who is also legally employed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
The statement confirmed that the church was in touch with the detained priest's family and was working closely with them to "navigate legal representation and seek clarity regarding the circumstances of his detention."
"This priest has served both the Church and the State of Texas faithfully," the statement read. "We are praying for his safety, for his family's peace of mind, and for fair and human treatment as this case moves forward."
Texas' Episcopal leader, the Right. Rev. C. Andrew Doyle, told Religion News Service (which first broke the story) that the Church was still trying to figure out exactly why the priest had been detained. "We do not know yet why he was targeted," Doyle told the outlet. "He is working legally and his immigration status is documented with a work permit."
In a phone conversation with Chron, a spokesperson of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas shared further details of the lead-up to the priest's arrest, revealing that he was stopped by Huntsville authorities while driving his car. The priest, who the spokesperson said had been working bi-vocationally in the U.S. since November 2023, had his legal documents inside the car with him, which showed that he is in the country on asylum and has a legal Social Security number. The diocese believes that he was arrested by the authorities and turned over to ICE custody.

are these people by any chance significantly Christian?
I guess the rationale is that it's suitably far away from the presently more intense violence of Western Sudan, or something like that
The notice acknowledged continued instability in South Sudan but pointed to ongoing negotiations between the transitional government in Juba and the State Department, along with an improving security situation in the country as evidence the country could reintegrate its citizens if they return home.“Although residual challenges from the civil war remain, there is no longer an ongoing armed conflict that poses a serious threat to the personal safety of returning South Sudanese nationals,” the agency said.
South Sudan has also sought to court the Trump administration, taking a small number of deportees from other countries in exchange for some relief from sanctions against its political leaders.
But fears have mounted that South Sudan may soon descend into civil war again. U.N. officials in recent months have sounded the alarm that the 2018 framework that allowed for an end to the conflict appears on the verge of collapse.

Key Findings
More than 46 percent of Fortune 500 companies in 2025 (231 out of 500) were founded by immigrants or their children, including:
109 companies founded by immigrants;
122 companies founded by children of immigrants.
Among the 14 companies that appeared on the Fortune 500 list for the first time this year, 10 were founded by immigrants or their children.
In fiscal year 2024, these 231 Fortune 500 companies generated $8.6 trillion in revenue—an amount that, if compared with national GDPs, would rank as the third-largest economy globally.
These 231 Fortune 500 companies employed over 15.4 million people worldwide, a number that’s comparable to the population of the fifth-largest U.S. state.
Immigrants and their children founded 80 percent of the Fortune 500 companies in professional and other services, 65.6 percent in manufacturing, and 57.5 percent in information.

"mega detention centers"
The Trump administration is exploring buying warehouses that were designed for clients like Amazon and retrofitting them as detention facilities for immigrants before they are deported, a move that would vastly expand the government’s detention capacity, according to a Homeland Security Department official and a White House official.
The precise warehouses that Immigration and Customs Enforcement may buy have not yet been determined, but the agency is looking at locations in the southern U.S. near airports where immigrants are most often deported, the DHS official and the White House official said. Selecting such warehouses would “increase efficiency” in deportations, the DHS official said.
A deal to purchase the warehouses, which on average are more than twice the size of current ICE detention facilities, is past the early stages but not yet final, the DHS official and the White House official said. The DHS official described the warehouses as future “mega detention centers.”

satanic callousness and cruelty
Rodney is a disabled double amputee who came to America at two years of age for medical care. He didn’t make the choice, his parents did. Living in America is all he’s ever known.
He built a life for himself and runs a barber shop in Atlanta. He recently became engaged to be married. He is a job creator in his community and is well loved by friends and neighbours.
So why does ICE have him? Because when he was a teenager he was charged with burglary. The state of Georgia later gave him a full pardon for the crime, and he’s never had so much as a parking ticket in the thirty years since.
That doesn’t matter to this regime though, because it’s not about going after the worst of the worst criminals. It’s about making money. It’s about hitting a quota. They often target those who can’t fight back. The elderly, the disabled, the unhoused. People who’ve done nothing wrong and are simply trying to build a better life for themselves.
When ICE grabbed Rodney, he was in the process of receiving new prosthetic legs. The detention centre is refusing to let him have a day pass to go get them, so his health is declining.
His old legs need to be charged for long periods of time, and more often than not it isn’t being done.
He was unable to make it to the dining room for meals, so other detainees were bringing him food. The facility offered him a manual wheelchair, but he’s missing digits on one of his hands and is unable to push it.
He’s been there nearly ten months, and in that time his disabilities have not been taken into consideration.
Now they’re threatening to send him back to Liberia which his fiancé says is surely a death sentence in his current condition.

everyone has due process rights in the US -- including non-citizens
In a unanimous decision, the jury awarded $112 million to the class of 674 people who were part of the 2017 lawsuit against Suffolk County and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department for unlawfully holding individuals in county jails after posting their bail or resolving their cases, for the sole purpose of facilitating the immigration enforcement authorities to take them into federal custody.
The case, Orellana Castañeda et al. v. County of Suffolk and Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office et al., (https://www.latinojustice.org/sites/default/files/2025-10/Doc%231ComplaintFiledJuly182017.pdf)does not address current policies in Suffolk County, though the issues at play echo community concerns about local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
“This decision brings long-overdue accountability,” said José Pérez, Deputy General Counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF. “The jury confirmed what we have argued all along, that Suffolk County’s actions trampled the basic due process rights guaranteed under the 14th Amendment. Today’s verdict is justice served and our clients courage ensures these types of abuses will hopefully not be repeated.”
The case, brought by LatinoJustice PRLDEF and Winston & Strawn LLP, challenged Suffolk County’s practice of unlawfully holding individuals in county jails after they should have been released (because their bail had been posted or their case had been resolved), for the sole purpose of facilitating a direct handover to immigration enforcement authorities.
The verdict in the week-long trial in the US District Couty in the Eastern District follows a January ruling by U.S. District Court Judge William F. Kuntz II, who presided over the case, that Suffolk County’s cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), specifically, its practice of holding individuals solely on the basis of ICE civil detainers, violated the Fourth Amendment and the New York State Constitution.
The jury’s decision applied to two outstanding issues in the case – whether Suffolk County also violated class members’ 14th Amendment procedural due process rights by failing to notify detainees why they were being held beyond their lawful release dates and the damages owed for those who were deprived of their liberty.
The Court’s order will require Suffolk County to compensate the affected class members.

Trump, Miller and Noem outsourced the torture of completely innocent people
The Trump administration never released a complete list of the 252 Venezuelan men imprisoned in El Salvador or the crimes it claimed they had committed.
Using a leaked list of the names, The Times found (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/15/world/americas/trump-migrants-deportations.html) that a relatively small share of the men — about 13 percent — seemed to have a serious criminal accusation or conviction in some part of the world. (The Times searched multiple public records databases, but the American government may have more information that it has not released.)
Of the 40 men interviewed for this article, The Times found criminal accusations, beyond immigration and traffic offenses, against three of them.

Trump doubles down on plan for 600,000 Chinese student visas despite MAGA backlash
President Donald Trump on Monday defended his administration’s plan to offer 600,000 visas to Chinese students — a move that has drawn criticism from within conservative circles.
Fox News’ Laura Ingraham pressed Trump during an interview on "The Ingraham Angle," questioning how the proposal was "pro-MAGA" if it crowded out spots for American students and whether universities were "getting rich" from Chinese money.
Trump argued that foreign students — particularly from China — are vital to keeping U.S. universities financially stable, adding that cutting the number of Chinese students in half would cripple the system.
"We do have a lot of people coming in from China. We always have, China and other countries. We also have a massive system of colleges and universities. And if we were to cut that in half, which perhaps makes some people happy, you would have half the colleges in the United States would go out of business," he said.

DHS broke a pre-Trump consent decree by arresting people without warrants
A federal judge on Wednesday said he plans to grant bond to hundreds of immigrants whose arrests under “Operation Midway Blitz (https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/11/10/federal-border-patrol-chief-gregory-bovino-and-agents-said-to-be-leaving-chicago-sources-say/)” allegedly violated a consent decree against “warrantless arrests.”
U.S District Judge Jeffrey Cummings ordered the Department of Justice to produce a list by Nov. 19 of which of the 615 potential class members were still in custody.
As long as a detainee had no criminal history or prior removal order, Cummings said he would allow their release on a $1,500 bond, pending the outcome of immigration proceedings.

intimidating US citizens on the basis of skin tint
When Reggie Williams turned 18 two decades ago, his mother entrusted him with his birth certificate. Keep it on you at all times, she advised, in case you encounter police.
On a recent afternoon, he had a copy in his wallet, along with his state ID, as he walked from his uptown apartment in Memphis, Tennessee, to a nearby corner store.
A Memphis Police Department cruiser pulled up, and two officers questioned him: Where was he coming from? Where was he going?
Williams responded, and the interrogation continued: Did he have any weapons on him? No. Any drugs? No. When asked to empty his pockets, the 39-year-old artist turned over his wallet and phone.
Minutes later, four men poured out of an unmarked SUV with tinted windows. They carried rifles and wore body armor — but no identifying badges.
He thought of his family. “Deep down, I felt like I was not gonna make it home,” said Williams, who is Black.
The Oct. 15 incident occurred about two weeks after the National Guard and 30 other local, state and federal agencies descended upon Memphis as part of President Donald Trump’s order authorizing “hypervigilant policing” to end violent crime. In addition to targeting violent criminals, the operation dubbed “Memphis Safe Task Force (https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/09/restoring-law-and-order-in-memphis/)” has ensnared innocent residents of this majority-Black city.
Among those who have reported being harassed: a ride-share driver stopped for not wearing a seat belt despite having one on as she drove a passenger to the airport; a pastor pulled over for looking lost as she left a church gathering; and, in a case of mistaken identity, a 72-year-old man roused from bed and marched out of his apartment while clad in only his robe and underwear.
None of these people were ultimately ticketed or arrested. But they told MLK50: Justice Through Journalism and ProPublica that they feared for their safety during what they described as indiscriminate and intimidating police encounters. While none of the law enforcement agencies involved responded to specific questions about these residents’ experiences, the news organizations corroborated their accounts using contemporaneous text messages and social media posts, as well as interviews with neighbors and relatives.
“I really believe that if I didn’t have that birth certificate, I would be somewhere in a facility,” said Williams, recalling one of the armed federal agents approaching him aggressively to ask if he was from Ethiopia or Ghana. “If you’re not white, we’re just all going to be targeted.”

yet more proof that immigrants have due process rights in the USA
A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the U.S. government’s mandatory detention of Diana Patricia Santillana Galeano, the day care teacher arrested at a Chicago preschool (https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/11/05/daycare-worker-taken-federal-agents/), is illegal and she must be given a bond hearing.
According to the ruling by U.S. District Judge Jeremy Daniel, Santillana will be given a bond hearing (https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/11/07/attorney-day-care-teacher-ice/) in front of an immigration judge, who could order her released while her civil deportation case proceeds. Her hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

Santillana’s case has generated widespread backlash. In a video circulated online, federal agents are seen pulling the screaming woman, a mother of two from Colombia, through the glass vestibule at the Rayito de Sol Spanish Immersion Early Learning Center in North Center, in the early morning hours of Nov. 5.
She is heard saying, “I have papers,” in Spanish as agents pin her against the officers’ car.
School officials said the woman, who cares for infants, had authorization to work in the day care and had undergone a background check. An agent did not present a warrant when he entered the building, the school’s staff said.

Canadian boycott of US travel shows no sign of slowing
...
October marked the 10th straight month of decline in the number of Canadian travellers to the US. Air travel from Canada to the US dropped nearly 24%, while car travel fell more than 30% when compared to the same period last year, according to data released this week by Canada's statistics office.
Overall, the US has seen a 3.2% drop in international spending in the country, driven primarily by fewer visitors from Canada, according to the US Travel Association, a nonprofit group representing the American travel industry.
As relations between the two countries remain icy, mostly in response to new tariffs Trump has imposed, Canadians are apparently committed to giving their southern neighbours the cold shoulder.
In the past, Canadians have made up about a quarter of all international visitors to the US, spending over $20bn (£15.1bn) a year, according to the US Travel Association.
...
Still, with Canadians choosing to travel closer to home, the country's own tourism industry has gotten a boost. Canada's tourism sector made a record-breaking C$59bn from May to August of 2025, up 6% from the same period last year, mostly because of people choosing to travel domestically, according to Destination Canada, a national tourism organisation.
Some of those choosing to stay home are Canadian snowbirds, retirees who travel south to states like Florida to find warmth in the winter months. A survey from the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada found these baby boomers were staying home more than other age groups, with only 10% planning US trips for this year, down 66% compared to last year.

The brother of the Chinese man who was found dead, hanging in a shower stall at a Pennsylvania ICE detention center expressed deep sorrow at the loss.
“I am devastated by the loss of my brother and by the knowledge that he was suffering so greatly in that detention center,” said Yanfeng Ge during an outdoor press conference held in Manhattan on Wednesday. “He did not deserve to be treated that way.”
On Aug. 5, Chaofeng Ge was found unresponsive in a shower stall at the ICE Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Clearfield County. He was pronounced dead soon after.
Yanfeng Ge has filed a lawsuit (https://www.pennlive.com/news/2025/11/family-of-ice-detainee-found-dead-in-shower-stall-files-a-lawsuit-against-agency.html) against Immigration and Customs Enforcement, seeking information on the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death. The lawsuit, filed in the Southern District of New York, also names the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which has oversight over ICE.
Chaofeng Ge, 32, was found hanging (https://www.pennlive.com/news/2025/08/ice-detainee-arrested-in-dauphin-county-found-dead-in-pa-immigration-detention-center.html) by his neck with his hands and legs tied behind his back when Moshannon staff found him, five days after he had entered the detention center.

cooperating with ICE can be risky for counties
As the Trump administration pushes local law enforcement to sign up to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an order to pay out $112 million to unlawfully detained immigrants could serve as a warning of the legal risks.
Last week, a jury ordered Suffolk County, New York, to pay the total sum, which will go to 674 immigrants unlawfully held in jail between 2016 and 2018 based on requests from ICE. The verdict (https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nyed.404538/gov.uscourts.nyed.404538.290.0.pdf) stemmed from a 2017 class action (https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nyed.404538/gov.uscourts.nyed.404538.1.0.pdf) claiming the county violated immigrants’ constitutional rights by keeping them in jail on ICE’s request when they’d otherwise be released.
Immigrant rights attorneys hope that local leaders elsewhere take notice.
“When counties do things illegally, courts and the justice system might one day force them to pay for the harm they’ve caused,” said Rex Chen, supervising counsel for Immigrant Rights LatinoJustice PRLDEF, which represented the plaintiffs. “So they may have to sit up and pay attention that breaking the law is something that they may have to pay for later on.”

The suspect reportedly displayed a badge to the teen and ordered him to step out of the car at gunpoint, authorities said. The teen complied before leaving the scene and reporting the incident to his parents.
Rodriguez was identified as the suspect and was later located at his home where he was taken into custody. A search warrant was served at the residence where evidence related to the investigation was found.
Rodriguez was booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment and assault by a public officer.
No further details, including the type of badge he reportedly showed or a possible motive behind the incident, were released as the investigation continues.

this should go over well
targeting people at church on Thanksgiving and Christmas
Agencies within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) intend to implement a comprehensive plan to target Spanish-speaking churches across the country during the upcoming holiday season between Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, and Christmas, Dec. 25.
Three U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) attorneys, including one assigned to the U.S. Attorney’s office in the district of Massachusetts, one to the district of Rhode Island office, and the third posted at an office in New York told This Week in Worcester they received briefings on the plan.
The attorney in the Massachusetts office said that they attend a Baptist church in Massachusetts and is a registered Republican. He said that he does not see how this plan is in line with either American values or Biblical doctrine.
The attorney in the Rhode Island office confirmed both the briefing and internal discussions about the legal issues surrounding arrests at churches over the past three months.
The attorney in the New York office spoke in depth about the plan being recently updated to include mosques and liberal synagogues in the wake of Zohran Mamdani’s recent win in the New York City mayor’s race.
The attorneys spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution. All three said the plan is not regional to New England, but a nationwide strategy.
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has fired several U.S. Attorneys and staff members since the beginning of its term in January, including two forced out this month in Miami (https://news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/miami-us-attorney-instills-fear-as-trump-enemy-probes-ramp-up).
Multiple versions of the plan are being reviewed by DOJ staff lawyers. The topic is a regular part of operational discussions between staff at the DOJ and the DHS.
Both attorneys also said that the Trump administration is pushing high-ranking Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) officials for public support of the plan, including Hispanic pastors.

This holds true no matter how strong the federal interest at play. ...while Congress has many enumerated powers, and may even overtake state law, it may not wield States as federal tools.

19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household,
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%202:19-22&version=NIV

"for protection and participation"
More than a dozen men have been arrested after trying to solicit a minor for sex in Bloomington, Minnesota, police say.
According to Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges, officers started the three-day sting on Nov. 5. They used several methods to find people who were attempting to solicit a 17-year-old girl for sex.
In all, police arrested 16 men during the investigation, which Hodges called "Operation Creep."
Hodges said most of the men came from within the Twin Cities area.
One of the men, he said, is an employee for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who could face federal charges. Hodges said the ICE employee works as an auditor.
"When he was arrested, he said, 'I'm ICE, boys,'" Hodges said during a press conference Tuesday. "Well, unfortunately for him, we locked him up."
Another suspect is a staffer at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
WCCO has reached out to both the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to confirm the men's roles and whether they're still employed.
Not all of the men have been charged.
Hodges added that he knew "ICE took custody of a few of them but we don't have a way to verify someone's status here at the Bloomington Police Department."

Federal agencies have deployed nearly 33,000 employees to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement in its efforts to dramatically ramp up detention and deportation of undocumented individuals, according to a new report, significantly multiplying the number of employees working on enforcement efforts.
About 20,000 of those employees came from outside ICE,the Cato Institute (https://www.cato.org/blog/ice-has-diverted-over-25000-officers-their-jobs), a libertarian-leaning think tank, found, including some agencies that have sent significant portions of their workforces to the deportation effort. ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations, which is responsible for investigating transnational crimes including drug and human trafficking, has sent more than 12,000 employees to the agency’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division. HSI as of the most recent data on ICE’s website had “more than 10,000 employees,” meaning it has both grown and sent nearly its entire workforce to assist with immigration enforcement.
DEA has assigned nearly 40% of its total employees to ICE, according to Cato’s data, while the ATF has sent nearly 30% and USMS around 20%.https://www.govexec.com/management/2025/09/report-federal-agencies-have-deployed-nearly-33000-employees-assist-ice/407907/

deporting people to places they will be persecuted or killed is refoulement (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/nov/24/trump-cancels-asylum-myanmar), a crime under the Geneva Convention and still law of the land in the USA -- the Geneva Convention was incorporated in a US treaty

The Trump administration (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/trump-administration) announced it will cancel temporary asylum for about 10,000 Myanmar nationals living in the US, despite the country being ruled by a military dictatorship that has a record of executing dissidents.
On Monday the Department of Homeland Security said it was terminating the designation of Burma (Myanmar) for Temporary Protected Status relief. It claimed that after reviewing conditions in Myanmar (https://www.theguardian.com/world/myanmar) and consulting with appropriate US government agencies, “the secretary [Kristi Noem] determined that Burma no longer continues to meet the conditions” for TPS designation.https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/nov/24/trump-cancels-asylum-myanmar

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has ordered a broad review of all refugees who entered under former President Joe Biden, an internal U.S. government memo seen by Reuters said, an unprecedented move that could reopen cases of thousands who sought U.S. protection.
The order would apply to about 233,000 refugees who entered between January 20, 2021 and February 20, 2025, according to the memo signed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joe Edlow. It also orders a halt to all processing of applications for permanent residence for refugees who entered under Biden.
