I figured we needed to start a really broad thread for all that is going on in Austin. After all, some of these guys may be in SA next season.

Link of boxscore from last nights win. Notice the 29 assists....

They have five players with legit callup potential, offensively at least. Fun to watch from that standpoint -- especially when they play run and gun teams like RGV or Reno.

Beasting in the first quarter, his jumper looks really smooth (got a couple of lucky bounces though). I hope the Spurs don't let him get away.

Dude's got game. If he learns how to translate it to the nba it could mean we won't have to suffer through a painful rebuilding process. Kawhi/ Anderson could become the core of a championship team.

He will. He was fucking awful his freshman year at UCLA, transitioning from HS to the NCAA.

I still feel that his ultimate position will be PF. If you get him from a doughy 230 to a solid 240-245, he can defend and rebound enough for the position, and still presents a ton of mismatches to his own defender.

I think you're right. To me it looks like is already becoming leaner and more muscular. He's just a kid so a solid 240-245 is realistic. If he can become a solid post player and be a stretch 4 that would be incredible.

Amazes me that some on here think he's trash. In that highlight video he's doing some things that some pretty good NBA players (Danny Green for example) will never be able to do in any league.

If you are wishing that Kyle can be a big piece to a championship core (ala #2 to Kawhi) then you are in for some bad time post big 3. Dude has game but let's not get ahead of ourselves. If he can do and reach what Boris has done then that will be a pretty good career. Also, this version of Danny Green won't have trouble dominating niggas in the dleague tbh.

Yea, I know there's a big disparity between the leagues. The funny thing is that people here see JaMychal put up numbers in Austin, and he's the second coming of Jesus, but when Kyle does it, it's just dleague competition.

Earl Barron is averaging 21 and 11 in Bakersfield this season. You have to look for utter sustained domination for a call up. The talent level is down a bit and teams like Reno and RGV implement run and gun game plans that inflate stats even further for all teams involved. Decent big men like Green and Barron are going to have gaudy numbers.

Had decent stats, but 5 for 15 from the field with 4 shots blocked against. 3 of the blocks came in a flurry early in the 4th and he faded out from there it seemed like. He did block 3 of his own with 11 boards and 5 assists in 41 minutes. Bryce Cotton with 38 was the man.

It was a B2B, and there were only 19 hours between tipoffs, with today's game being a matinee as the second half. His previous 3 games FGs were 11-24, 11-20, 11-21, and he's out shooting Cotton for the year. He's also outscoring, rebounding, blocking and assisting him.

I wasn't implying that Cotton is a better prospect. I was just saying in this particular game he was the man who hit the big shots (7-8 from 3pt). I agree with your assessment of KA. He will ultimately be a 4 that will cause some significant match up problems for other teams. And even in the 2nd of a B2B he got 11 boards. A strong rebounder with his other skills will be in this league a long time.

Austin Spurs Acquire Khyle Marshall
The Austin Spurs, presented by SWBC, today announced they have acquired forward Khyle Marshall. The roster now stands at 11, including San Antonio Spurs assignee Kyle Anderson. Marshall will wear jersey No. 21 tonight when the team hosts the Grand Rapids Drive at 7:30 p.m. at Cedar Park Center

Marshall played in eight games last month with the Yokohama B-Corsairs of the Japanese BK League where he averaged 14.4 points and 7.9 rebounds. He played four years at Butler University (2010-14) averaging 9.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Marshall (6-6, 216) was the 15th Butler player to record 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. He was a member of the USA team at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship.

So the Hawks assigned Tavares and Patterson to the Spurs because they don't have their own D-League team. Makes sense with the similar systems in SA and Atlanta but sucks for a guy like Ndoye who will see far less playing time now.

Gamecast cut short but the defense was ridiculous when Tavares and Lalanne were out there with any perimeter player besides Eddie.

Probably depends on the injury situation of the big club, but who do you see that might be called up this year because the Spurs braintrust just wants to see what they have against higher level competition.

We'd have to cut a player to call someone up. Our roster is full at 15.

Yeah, I my first thought was that the 3s must be a misprint! I don't remember the guy even taking a 3 in SL or pre-season.

Comments from Spurs coaching staff was he had a surprisingly good touch. He took some 3's in SL, but they didn't go in. He' a bit raw, but he's got good length. So this may be a promising pick up for the Spurs a couple years in the future.

27 points. Finally showing great progress. This is very encouraging for a guy that's 6'9" and has like a 7'5" wingspan. By comparison, Leonard has a 7'3" wingspan.

Lalanne made most of his damage on the 1st and 2nd quarters. He was 5-7 in 3's by the end of the 2nd quarter. Not only was he taking 3's he was driving to the hoop, scoring and passing. He's figuring it out! This is from a guy who never took a 3 point shot in college and just played center. Excellent find by the Spurs. A much bigger 3 and D guy!

Here's is NBA scouting report pre-draft: http://www.nba.com/draft/2015/prospects/cady_lalanne Reminds me of: Nerlens Noel

Orlando Johnson has decent size and athleticism to do well guarding quick point guards. He also seems to be a rugged player. Personality wise, he does seem to be a Spurs type of player.

I'm kind of disappointed with Ray McCallum and would like to see how Orlando Johnson would work out as a replacement. Spurs don't own any rights to Johnson, so it is hard to tell if they open up a spot. His game though looks a lot more impressive than McCallum.

I am disappointed in Ray, not so much for his performance but mostly because he has barely seen the court after RC kind of oversold him this summer. I thought he played decent position defense against the Lakers, but he was just too small to contest shots. Basically, after years of mini-guards I would love to see the Spurs get some size at PG.

I agree with the observation that he is too small to contest shots. Orlando Johnson is 6'5" has a lot of leaping ability.

Plays the same game as McCallum but is 3 inches taller and a 6'11" wingspan compared to a 6'3" for McCallum. Honestly, McCallum is not only short, he's got short arms too! The only way McCallum can stick in the league is that *if* he can shoot like Patty.

Absolutely does not make sense to keep McCallum if he can't defend better than Mills or can shoot like Mills. Spurs have a hole and that's guarding quick guards.

His limited wingspan is something that I haven't seen discussed. I think I was kinda subconsciously aware of it, but that is a great observation.

Where was Orlando last summer? He wasn't with us. Nor do we own his rights, so he might end up being called up by some other team.

Yup, that's indeed the risk. However, I don't know if there are other D-league players who are also playing as well as Johnson. Simmons played well last season but nobody really noticed him. Johnson looks good, but I don't know if there are other players who look better.

The key though for someone to stick with the Spurs is basketball IQ. I don't see that in McCallum despite him being the son of a coach.

Thanks for the highlights. So, where was he last summer? He wasn't on our SL team.

CIA Pop sent him to the Wizards. Spurs will do what it takes to hide any intention of signing somebody. Simmons as a case in point.

Very rare do the Spurs call up someone who will stick. Jamychal Green was one of those rare callups but Spurs couldn't agree with contract terms.

McCallum is problematic since Spurs owe him a full year. Bonner is easily disposable since he's owed only until January. Lalanne is a problem because he's a Spurs draft pick (in short, Spurs need to be absolutely sure about Lalanne). Spurs will go with 15 players come playoff time, so there's at a minimum one slot open right now and maybe 2 more spots opening later.

I don't know this season, but I watched Orlando Johnson last season and he looked better than Simmons. He had better slashing, better handles, overall seemed like a more skilled player. But he didn't shoot the 3 that well and that is basically a need for SG in the league. Simmons was also a reluctant shooter, but I think he might have slightly be better.

Overall though, I think Simmons' passing skill is ultimately what made Pop fall in love with him.
There are many guys with Simmons' athleticism in the dleague.
Athletic dunking guys are common. Question is can they do anything else?
Regardless of all the areas that Simmons was raw in, Pop gushed about his passing...

Orlando Johnson was a polished college player who didn't get drafted in the 1st rd b/c there wasn't anything about his game that stood out besides him being able to score. He went to my alumni (UC-Santa Barbara) & I got to see him play one year when he led the Gauchos to the NCAA tournament. On the other hand, Simmons was a raw talent when he declared for the draft.

Yeah, the D league is basically a showcase for athletes who want to play basketball. Pop always lists Vision and Playmaking at the top of Simmons' assets. He was the PG in garbage time tonight and pressed too hard - not enough to undermine either the good things he had done earlier or his confidence, but I hated to see it. I think he is going to get it all together sooner rather than later and become the combo guard leader of the second unit after Manu retires. I expect him to become a Spur for life kind of guy.

He looked much better than Simms in the dleague. Like you say, he can score, he seemed like a more skilled player. Simmons was cringeworthy at times in the dleague, he did play out of control at times, and he had very, very high TO games and they weren't games of Manu's over-ambitious passing kind, they were TO of the ugly ballhandling kind like you saw in preseason x2 or x3.
Orlando never had games of that horrible magnitude.
Simmons' passing is what Pop saw. Getting him to play under control has helped many of his cringeworthy decisions. I believe that is what Pop meant when he said he wanted J.Simms to be "solid."

He's not a PG, but when Cotton got called last season, both Simmons and Johnson took turns at PG.
Perhaps Simmons was the better passer, but Johnson was more reliable with the ball.
Simmons tended to play out of control and turn the ball over whenever he was pressured.
If anyone wonders why nobody picked him up from the dleague?
Aside from athleticism (and that is common in the dleague) he didn't have anything special and was raw in many areas.

Pop saw his courtvision and passing and thought there was something there to develop (maybe something others don't value as much as Pop does)... so basically you can say, Simmons is a perfect system player for us.

Orlando didn't strike me as selfish either, Austin promotes passing a whole lot, but his strength, his real skill is getting buckets.

Orlando was the best mid-major scorer when he was at UCSB, his issue is that he doesn't have a quick first step to beat average wing defenders in the NBA & he can't play bully ball against grown men.

That pass from Boban, the receiver was Orlando and he knocked down that corner 3. He seems to be developing that shot.

My take is that he could be a serviceable guard that can defend much better than Ray McCallum. McCallum has issues that he can never fix, too short, too short arms and low basketball IQ.

I don't know enough about Orlando to be able to tell if he has some basketball IQ, but he certainly is taller and with more length than McCallum.

I watched a good part of Ray's/Cady's minutes in one of the game. Some observations:

Cady Lalanne looking much improved offensively in comparison to Summer League. He's shooting the 3 really well, his jumpshot looks better, with nice follow through. He has also been able to catch the ball in motion out of a PnR, acting as the roller, something he struggled with in Summer League. He's been able to finish at the basket with either hand but it is hard to say how that will translate to the NBA if we get him next season since centers in the dleague are undersized and lacking in quality. This Vipers team didn't have anyone on assignment that was NBA caliber. They had Joshua Smith who is a heavy guy in the Big Baby Davis mold (but less skilled obviously and quite slow). He has a lot of work still to do on the defensive end though, awareness and rebounding/both grabbing position and boxing out.

Ray McCallum was played on and off the ball next to Keifer Sykes.. so it could be revealing concerning the Spurs plans with him, to play him next to another PG. He played a whole lot off the ball, and when he had the ball his task was to call a set and get it started. His play was nothing like Cory or even Anderson for that matter. He was mostly just getting guys in spots when acting as the PG and then quickly giving the ball up.

This Austin Spurs offense looks much different from last season, where I watched a lot of games with B.Cotton/J.Simmons/J.Eddie/O.Johnson/K.Anderson/E.Murphy. The offense went through all 4 of Cotton, Simmons, Johnson or Anderson at different times, it was fast paced, with shooters spread out, since 3 of those guys are pure shooters (Cotton/Eddie/Murphy) and the others were ballhandlers, but also working on their 3 pt shot, therefore all were a threat to shoot the 3. It looked really different. The only frequent post player in that group was Anderson who they played as a 3 or 4 and O.Johnson who is a stocky, strong guard. Simmons/Johnson slashed and handled the ball, but Anderson created a lot of offense for them from passing to cutters, and throwing lobs, and Cotton was a relatively good distributor as well.

Anderson was free to bring the ball up and push the offense going with whoever he saw open and they didn't call sets a lot of the time. It was a lot less structured, more free flowing and guys cut, used drive and dish a lot or found something out of simple motion or screening for each other. If they were stuck, a few of those guys could get their own shot. The coach called a lot of plays for Anderson posting up. It was something he was clearly working on. It looked similar to SL (for those who watched summer league), except Anderson had the role to distribute much more than we saw in SL, and probably more freedom to freelance. In Summer League they depended on him to score a whole lot and ran sets for him, but it appeared to have been because they needed his scoring to a degree. Also, there was a lot more PnR called for J.Simmons in Summer league, than there was in Austin, but you could see his thunderous dunks in transitions as well as him slashing or catching lobs from Anderson.

This Austin offense is different, a lot of action involves the guards playing off the ball involved in hand offs with the big men or cuts. It seems a lot less guard centric, runs a lot of actions out of horns and the post, and therefore, you see Ray giving the ball up quickly after calling up a set and playing off the ball a whole lot. Both Sykes and O.Johnson played on the ball more.

It could be that however you slice it, if Ray is to stay with the team, he will probably play off the ball a whole lot, since there are a lot better passers in the team and other guys who will create much better.
I will report if I catch something else, since I didn't watch the 2nd game. (They played 12/17 and 12/18)

A piece on Cady. I thought I would put it in his personal thread, but this one is keeping track of the Toros.

Still relatively new to basketball, Lalanne said his progress has improved exponentially since he was drafted by the Spurs and joined their Summer League team. One area of Lalanne’s development that Spurs director of scouting Brian Pauga noted is outside shooting. He was never asked to take long-range shots in college while playing primarily inside, but Lalanne said he hopes to be more of a stretch forward in the pros.
He’s attempted 40 3-pointers in 12 games with Austin, almost as many as the 47 he attempted in four seasons of college basketball. Lalanne has made 40 percent of his 3-pointers.
“Chip Engelland, San Antonio, and Austin coaches have reworked my whole shooting process,” Lalanne said. “Before, I wasn’t using my legs much. Now, I’m bending my knees, holding my follow-through and using all the right mechanics. I’m feeling more confident every day.”
Lalanne is averaging 11.8 points and 6.5 rebounds in his rookie season as the Austin Spurs are off to a 10-2 start.

Damn he was probably our best player in Austin. Great shooter, just couldn't do much else. Horrible defender. Best of luck to him though.

Good shooter, but can't pass and can't defend. Spurs prefer a defender and passer before they pick up a shooter.

You watched the games? I admit that I do not watch the ASpurs. I wonder if his regression has anything to do with a new guy or guys, with whom he is unfamiliar being sent down for substantial minutes - like Tim Hardaway, Jr. Did that seem to disrupt Cady's game any?

He shows flashes of good rebounding, defense and shooting but just as much wandering around lost. It may be a case of overthinking the system that rookies go through -- but last night was the Hardaway Jr. show and not much of a knock on any of the other players, who overall had solid games more as role players.

IMO Cady is doing fine as the project he is. The NBA potential is still there.

Thanks for sharing your observations. I kind of expected it was the THJ show last night.

As for Cady, I would guess that you also watched SL games, too. I thought of him as an athlete who would probably never translate his athletic ability into basketball skills. So, seeing his box score - especially his 3 point shooting has really peaked my interest.

Howevah, since the Spurs will probably only be assigning one player from here on out, there will be two slots open for Atlanta or Chicago or whoever to use. I'm really surprised Atlanta isn't further along in getting its own D-League team. Chicago is all set to go next season.

Lalanne with a good shooting night. 4-5 from 3. Hope he keeps it up.

In the 4th Quarter, Lalanne scored 8 straight points. He needed to be subbed out to cool him off!

Orlando Johnson is my pick for a callup.

Yeah nice box score for Cady and Orlando. I have been following them with high hopes. For what it is worth, I stumbled across a blog a few weeks back that rated D-league players on a weekly basis. On the flip side looks like Deshaun should have stayed in Spain.

It does seem like trading for McCallum is a mistake unless the Spurs re-sign him on a cheap, long-term deal. He just isn't standing out enough for me to feel he's a bona-fide NBA talent. They could have found a better guy in a call-up.

Still better than Jimmer though.

I watched that game on you-tube last night. It was a bad game. Tim Hardaway jr jacked up a few threes and not make them. That Orlando Johnson doesn't seems to be making sound decisions. I'm not impressed. Cady Lalane can shoot threes as well as play in the paint, ok I'm a fan. Youssou Ndoye blocked two shots, so this guy seems to good defensively. Deshaun Thomas doesn't look good in this game, probably injured. Several times, three men under the rim can't get the rebound, It is ridiculous. Ray Mccallum seems like a cut above the rest, his hopping style of movements bring up the ball looks kind of weird though. The opposing team, that Tydale guy is irritating to watch, kind of no sportmanship, and that Vince Hunter is a very good player among them, so he should get called up by some teams. btw, I'm just a casual basketball fan. I seldom post, so I'm just a lurker.

Welcome!

Thanks for the review. I like to watch the occassional dleague game too, or at least snippets of the players that intrigue me.
It is troublesome they can't rebound. I am guessing the problems were on the defensive end this game or TO. Hard to win a game with 21 TO and just 3 steals, particularly when you also shoot as a team 22% on 27 3s.

Ray is a headscratcher. I suppose he's fine for a 3rd string PG but I have been wondering what Pop has in mind for him. The real question has been all the garbage time Bonner or Butler have had that Ray could have benefited from and also if there is a foul trouble situation or injury ... who do you sub. I am guessing Pop will go to one of Anderson/Simmons, but its a risky proposition Pop has taken without Ray for long stretches, either not in uniform or in the dleague.

The way Pop treats McCallum it is as if the player has zero future and doesn't even care if he gets any playing time at all!

I speculate that despite Parker not playing the next game, we aren't going to see McCallum. He'll be lucky to showup come garbage time.

In the pecking order, McCallum is behind Butler. I don't even recall if Butler played at all last December.

Yes Butler did the Utah game at least. Might be some others, Milwaukee, Lakers? Strict garbage time. Ray I remember just on the Lakers game Tony sat out and this past suns game. It's been scarce for sure.

The way Pop talks about Marjanovic or doesn't play Ray, you have to wonder if Pop even bothers to have a conversation with RC before RC pulls the trigger. It is like he doesn't even know these guys.

Pop says about Marjanovic that all he knows about him is that he's tall.

With McCallum it just feels that he doesn't even want him in team! Did he talk to RC before RC brought McCallum in??

Showcase Day One recap:

This was the shocker of day one. The Energy came into the Showcase on a seven-game losing streak and beat the 14-4 Spurs? Never would have called this one.

What might be even crazier is that Iowa is missing Perry Jones III, Cartier Martin and Patrick Christopher, who are all out due to injury. They only suited up eight players and two of those were on assignment from the Memphis Grizzlies. Go figure.

[...]

Believe it or not, Harrison did not have the worst game of the night. That award went to Nick Johnson, who fouled out in just 18 minutes with six points. For a guy who most thought wouldn’t be in the D-League long, that’s not the type of performance you want with all 30 NBA clubs watching. I’m sure he will bounce back in a big way when Austin plays Erie on Friday.

Orlando Johnson was aggressive for most of the game, but it didn’t translate well as he shot 4-15 from the floor for 13 points. Draft rights player Cady Lalanne had an underwhelming game as well. I was looking for him to show more assertiveness in driving to the basket, but at this point he seems content settling for jump shots.

How is his lateral movement?

He is very athletic and quick on his feet. He can get by on that in the D-league, but to make it in the NBA, he still needs to work on footwork. But when I saw him in SL, I wasn't sure his raw athleticism would ever translate into actual basketball skill. He has come a long way in Austin. He reminds me of Ian Mahinmi when he first joined the Spurs.

Pretty damned good:

I think he could be better than Baynes pretty soon. He also looked to have a decent shot out to midrange. I don't think he'd be a huge factor in today's league. But as a Reggie Evans/Birdman like player, I think that he could help out more than Boban does. This team doesn't have anyone scrappy on it.

Wow, worst box score from Cady since he has been in Austin. I don't expect us to bring in a big this season. If we want a lift this season though, Varejao would get the nod. Cady is for next season. This year I would prefer a combo guard who could provide a few minutes of D without giving up too much in offense. However, I don't think that guy exists.

SAGirl

Cady with just a terrible shooting night. I guess it happens but damn.

If the shooting wing situation continued to be a concern I'd see us picking a SG, but even that is so uphill bc Ray is really not getting minutes and last season we picked up Reggie Williams and he was just a body, unplayable in any regular rotation situation outside garbage time... and I really think we are getting Bertans if he stays healthy for the season.

Cady has an uphill battle IMO. I don't think he's a better prospect than KA or Bertans. He's the kind of guy whose shooting really needs to be really good to get a spot and he's looking very streaky right now. Bertans is an enigma for me though bc how skinny and tough is he really? What position is he going to play and is his body going to hold up. He seems mire athletic than Anderson, but it's really the contact, the boxing out, defensive awareness and things like that which concern me. He seems unidimensional like indeed a taller Marco, but I am guessing. Cady is more sturdy. So different guys but basically the same role?

Cady has been falling a part in the last couple of games. Even Austin is having trouble winning.

I agree, Bertans is likely a taller Marco but less accurate and of the same defensive capability.

Spurs have no choice but to develop players because as history has shown, the free agents the Spurs pick up are either close to retirement or are expensive underperforming divas.

The expensive free-agents all turn out to be underskilled talented folks without the necessary drive (see: RJ and LMA).

While cady is in a shooting slump. He does offer more than just shooting. He still had 7 rebounds and 2 block shots.

I do do wonder if he is hitting a rookie wall?

I'd like to see the Spurs reward Thomas, Ndoye and Lalanne with a short trip to the big team. Looks like these guys are working hard at their games. The only problem I see with them as future Spurs if they continue to improve is a logjam on the frontline. Especially if Bertans shows up. But when Timmy retires it would be a good problem to have.

Personally I like a duo of Boban and Ndoye, eh??

Ndoye is a center. He'd be the tallest player on the team besides Boban. He's not going to play next to him. He's more of a fifth big who has the upside to be an average fourth big who could randomly have some great games. It's nothing to get excited about, but locking him into a three-year deal at near the minimum would be a great way to hammer down a roster spot while the team chases bigger free-agent game.

Ndoye is the center. He isn't going anywhere except possibly San Antonio at some point. Cady LaLanne is a PF, working on his three ball to become a stretch 4. Unfortunately, his shot has been going south after a good start. Maybe he hit the rookie wall in the D-League. :lol

I watched him last season since he joined Austin late after a contract overseas, like he's doing right now. He just reinforced the team fir the playoffs. Has no upside, is slow and unskilled. Boban is infinitely better and Ndoye is a lot more agile and athletic. Trust me, I watched Sene.

Even his "highlights" posted in this thread are underwhelming (to be euphemistic). Glad you confirm he is not a legit prospect - one fewer names to remember. :lol

Thanks for finding and posting Saunders' highlights. When players are traded between D-league teams, obviously no rights are owned or acquired by their NBA affiliates; however, do you think San Antonio had a hand in this move?

They might have just been doing Wright a solid to get him playing time somewhere else. They may need a little more depth at guard if Orlando Johnson gets called up again.

I wasn't thinking that SA initiated the trade. I guess it is more a question of autonomy. I wonder if Austin has the autonomous authority to make trades without running them by the SA front office?

BTW, I was not aware Orlando was called up. Who called him? Did he do any good?

I wonder if Austin has the autonomous authority to make trades without running them by the SA front office? It's all interconnected. The GM of the Toros usually has an additional job in the NBA Spurs. Sean Marks' Spurs job was in player development; the current Toros GM, Brian Pauga, is Director of Scouting for the Spurs. The short answer is I'm sure trades are run by RC, but I'm also confident that he's much more interested in keeping some players on than others and the Wright/Sauders trade was just rubber stamped.

BTW, I was not aware Orlando was called up. Who called him? Did he do any good?1 OK game and 1 bad game for the Suns. He's back on the roster but didn't play today after getting a game winner the previous game.

Sad to see Johnson go, but he was really not in the long-term plans anyway.

Incidentally, have I mentioned how much I resent Atlanta assigning guys to Austin? Tarvares is just killing the development of Cady and Ndoye.

I thought he pervious signed for another NBA team (was it the Suns?). He's been gone for a while now.

Eh, it may keep Ndoye under the radar a bit to lessen the competition for an SL slot, though he's still pretty productive off the bench.
