Now we’re worried about salaries not outpacing inflation? :lol
From the same crowd bitching about $15/hour??? :lmao
One has nothing to do with the other
Federal minimum wage is a fake issue, entry level work is payment within itself, you have to start somewhere, the minimum wage kills jobs, job creators avoid high minimum wage areas, when labor costs rise other prices rise too, the poor get priced out, we can negotiate our own deals, each state’s economy is different, the Constitution says nothing about the minimum wage.

Of course they’re directly associated. The federal minimum wage has historically set the floor for wages. There’s still people today earning $7.25/hour and the outrage at the mere mention of an increase goes to show it does matter.
The last time it was updated was July 2009. It has been over 12 years since it’s last update, and we’ve had an average of 2%-3% yearly inflation rate. I only recall some people here mentioning wages (minimum and otherwise) have not kept up with inflation, but they were certainly not conservative. With the minimum wage specifically, the conservative opposition was certainly pretty clear.
But now is a problem? Really? :lol
Minimum wage is an offer, it's part of a negotiation. Walk away if it doesn't meet your demands.

True.
We say that frontline workers are great for doing their jobs in the midst of a pandemic but the pay of frontline service workers that cannot work from home (food production, retail, transportation, etc.) is not commensurate.
Who would take a minimum wage job now, as you say, unless they had no other option?

Lol that’s a terrible post and lacks basic economic fundamentals, not to mention that’s actually refuted by reality. I haven’t just started arguing about depreciated wages in this post or thread.
The reality is that the minimum wage (and NOT the maximum wage) ends up adjusting the entire salary scale. The guy that was making $15/hour, which wasn’t the minimum salary, but now it is, will also need his salary adjusted. And this moves up the chain. This is unlike top salaries, which don’t uniformly scale up (or ‘lifts all boats’) the same. That’s why we have CEOs with golden parachutes making 1000x more than their immediate subordinates.
Some of these other arguments answer themselves. If such a small amount of people are working at the federal minimum, then why do we even have pushback or articles like that? The answer is what’s explained above, a raise of the federal minimum doesn’t just impact workers making the minimum, but the entire wage chain. This is especially the case when the increase is fairly drastic (like it would be duplicating it to $15 in one fell swoop).
If you wanted to make a better economic argument about the increase, you would actually say it’s easier to go from 7.25 to 15 in Seattle, WA (which, BTW, shits all over that post and it’s claims) than in South Bend. That makes a lot more economic sense, because Seattle is a wealthier city with a fairly competitive market in many areas, so you end up with two things: 1) Companies willing to eat the difference instead of passing the cost in order to remain competitive in a strong market and 2) even if some costs are passed, it’s a city better equipped to deal with the increase. South Bend, on the other hand, is SOL.
And lastly, nothing on that post refutes what we’ve been discussing at all, it’s just another goalpost move (poor at that, tbh 3/10) that doesn’t address the newlyfound fake outrage of wages not keeping up with inflation…
But I’m the one losing it… :lmao
Not sure when the BDS got into you, but damn if it doesn’t look tougher than COVID :lol
Some people need the work and don’t have that option. But, regardless, I’m just pointing out the selective outrage, tbh
Minimum wage will always be minimum wage. If the jobs that pay it now doubled their pay due to increase in the MW, the cost of living would make the increase pointless and unless the entire pay scale shifted to compensate, you've got people who actually worked a few years to get to 15 an hour and now they are at minimum wage :lol
That said, it wouldn't bother me other than the fact it's just for show. It doesn't close the financial gap nor make these down and out people better off when the cost of living for them doubles as well.

But that’s the thing. Seemingly only wages are not indexed by inflation (and predominantly is the lower wages) despite that for a business it’s a cost no different than any other cost of doing business. If your raw materials raise 3%, the business is going to raise prices by 3%, but generally try to pocket the different on wages. Again, this is not always the case, but it’s much more prevalent on lower wages since the expectation is that such a person can be easily replaced.
Again, this spilled over into an argument about the minimum wage, but that was just a clear example of what I’m talking about selective outrage. The minimum wage has been lapped up and destroyed by inflation for over a decade, but now it’s a problem?
ElNono

This somewhat also dovetails into the new ‘outrage’ about workers being more picky about the jobs they want to take and under what conditions (remote, flex work, low wage, etc) in a high worker demand economy. No company has a ‘right’ to workers, they have to bid in a competitive market.

But who stays at entry level income for years? Even the government says that the net outcome of 15 dollars an hour MW would be more families without income due to people being let go for cost reasons. Sure some would make more, but some would simply not be hired or would be let go. You're saying the stairs keep getting extended but that bottom step is always at the same height.

No, extending the stairs would mean that they grow at the very least on par with inflation, but they do not.
Plenty of people work for low wages (or used to before the pandemic made the job market much tighter). Don’t we hear often enough how half the country don’t make enough to even pay taxes? Lots of people on part time jobs as well.
I get that an indexed MW will never happen. It should, but it’s unlikely it ever will.

There's nothing that says wages have to increase with inflation. So extending the stairs just means there's a corporate ladder, or a technical ladder, or some form of progression. That doesn't mean the entry level needs to be raised as well. Just don't stay at the entry level. If it was too low no one would take it. So you'll work for 7.50 an hour? Ok how about 15?

Of course there’s nothing that says wages should be indexed to inflation, however, inflation doesn’t just magically disappear if you don’t. That wage is being effectively depreciated, while prices do get adjusted, so largely it’s the employer that’s pocketing the difference. This happens not just at the lower wage range, but at any wage range. Low inflation is inherently not a terrible thing in economic terms (much more preferable than deflation or high inflation), but it does have that effect on wages and once enough time has gone on without some sort of adjustment, that’s how you get to non-livable wages.
As far as why would people work for the minimum? Well, some people need to make money. Some people can’t qualify for a better job. Some people need two jobs to make ends meet and take what’s available to them. Everybody wants to be a manager or a boss, but not everybody can get that job.

Inflation and wages are different issues. Wages can go up and I'd bet you don't think inflation needs to rise to accommodate. Though it would be great if wages were always adjusted to meet rises in CoL, it doesn't mean that the wage discussion has to be focused on the CoL. The focus should instead be on creating a more marketable employee, not on forcing an employer to pay more for entry level work than the market dictates. Whether or not the market dictates 15 an hour for an entry level job, it really doesn't have much to do with minimum wages. There are many jobs that pay more than minimum wage for entry level work, there's just some that don't because the line of people who aren't qualified to do the work for whatever reason (can't get there on time, drug habits, criminal record, past employment history, etc...) is incredibly long. When employers cannot find minimum wage workers, they'll have to raise the offer or change the category of employee they are looking for.
As far as why would people work for the minimum? Well, some people need to make money. Some people can’t qualify for a better job. Some people need two jobs to make ends meet and take what’s available to them. Everybody wants to be a manager or a boss, but not everybody can get that job.
Someone decides to not get vaxxed, let them die. If that same someone decides to quit school, give them more starting pay. Sorry, but I was born dirt poor and have worked for less than minimum wage. I didn't stay that way. If you cannot afford to have kids, don't. I am pro choice, anti abortion. Choose to not have babies.
For people immigrating from areas where advancement wasn't possible, that's a different issue. Many of those people including Asians and Indians do just fine, hell they do better than fine.

I’m not arguing whether an employer needs this or that, inflation effectively raise prices and, if wages aren’t raising at the same or higher rate, you’re effectively losing purchasing power. This is the bare basics of economics 101. I understand Americans haven’t had to deal with things like hyperinflation, which makes this issue stick out like a sore thumb, but steady small inflation over a number of years has the same effect. So yeah, inflation is one factor that goes directly to wages. It’s not the only factor, but certainly one.
Someone decides to not get vaxxed, let them die. If that same someone decides to quit school, give them more starting pay. Sorry, but I was born dirt poor and have worked for less than minimum wage. We housed him for a year, tried to help him every way possible, including finishing high school, which he didn’t. Taught him how to apply for jobs, showed him how hard I work for what I have, etc but it was just too late. After some time he went back and started getting burger flipping jobs for the minimum, living with his brother in this shitty place, coz that money sure isn’t enough to live. His mom (lol trumptard) never worked a day in her life, lived off the govt checks, and when he was 19 and couldn’t get a meal ticket out of him, kicked him out of the house. His dad divorced and left when he was a teen. This is also a kid that still doesn’t know what he wants in life or what he likes. Completely foreign to me, I had a job doing what I do today by the time I was 16. He tried to sign up for the Army and they didn’t take him (bad knee).
I could give him half a million and he’ll blow it three months. Loves money, doesn’t want to work for it. Gets fired all the time once he burns out and normally is an expletive filled tirade to his manager. I’m lost how you right that ship. At some point we decided with the wife we’re going to help him if something drastic happens, but he needs to figure out how life works.
Once upon a time I thought he was an outlier, and he’s possibly in the minority, but meeting people he worked with or friends of him, there’s actually a lot more of them that it looks (or at least that I thought there was out there).
Again, would be easy to just say this is all the kids’ fault. But I know for a fact its not and we’ll be around to try to help him out, but how many more are out there like him and what happens when they don’t have help. What you do? I really don’t have an answer for this, tbh

Dems had their four years, now you have yours. Go for it.

No offense taken. He might be a loser but he’s still family. Plus, calling him a loser solves absolutely nothing. Like I said, we won’t be there for his petulant bullshit, and we made that clear. He no longer lives with us either.

We gave him a solid shot with a complete network of support for over a year and he blew it. We’re good people, but not stupid. I came to this country with a bag of clothes, $500 in my pocket and a work visa. No family, nothing else. I know the bottom and I also know what it takes to climb that ladder. What I mean by help is if he has some sort of accident, but otherwise, he’s going to have to figure it out on his own.

You need to read that and THINK about it. It assumes EVs will be used as batteries to feed back into the grid. Power plant capacity isn't the issue. Its the hard wire issue to carry the electricity from the power plant to the home miles away to charge millions of cars every night. Existing power grids/wire sizes won't be able to handle the amperage.
CosmicCowboy
01-07-2022, 09:03 PM
A typical "fast" charger requires 480V and 100+ amps to charge a car. You don't have that at your house.
CosmicCowboy
01-07-2022, 09:08 PM
A level two charger requires 240v and at least 32 amps. Thats for one car basically overnight. Have two cars? You don't have 70 available amps in your home panels even if CPS can deliver it to you.

A level two charger requires 240v and at least 32 amps. Thats for one car basically overnight. Have two cars? You don't have 70 available amps in your home panels even if CPS can deliver it to you.
Eh, you may not have to recharge batteries every day (see battery story below) and technological improvements to grid are inevitable.
A startup claims that its new battery can double a Tesla's range.
Our Next Energy (ONE), a Michigan startup, fitted a 2021 Tesla Model S with its own experimental battery and took the electric car on a road trip across the state in December. The prototype battery completed a 752-mile road trip in the dead of winter without stopping to recharge once, according to the company.
The company said that the average speed of the trip was 55 miles per hour and that the results were validated by a third party using a dynamometer, a device designed to measure the power of an engine.
ONE said the road test set a new industry record and was performed to demonstrate the power of their battery.

Repugs put coal lobbyist to head their corrupted EPA.
Dems?
It’s Thursday, January 13, and the Biden administration is making coal plants clean up their toxic byproducts.
EPA, announced Tuesday that it’s taking steps to address toxic pollution from coal ash (https://go.grist.org/e/399522/-ash-contamination-2022-01-11-/25z8lbk/969733700?h=eJfGq92EzdJzjJGWns-lEGO1aszG6KWtfhs3wZvyfng), a byproduct of electricity production from coal-fired power plants.
The agency said it would
require plants to close unlined coal ash storage ponds — in some cases years ahead of schedule (https://go.grist.org/e/399522/dd8b135c24a575c7e5975ed9f95d66/25z8lbm/969733700?h=eJfGq92EzdJzjJGWns-lEGO1aszG6KWtfhs3wZvyfng) —
and comply with cleanup requirements.

Democratic nominee Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick overwhelmingly won a Florida congressional election on Tuesday.
Due to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' refusal to schedule a timely special election, the seat had been vacant for more than nine months.

78.7 percent-19.6 percent (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/01/11/us/elections/results-florida-20-special-general.html) landslide in Florida's 20th Congressional District.

This is how past presidents got by with so much stupid shit, because somewhere in the mix was a speech faux pas that the media focused on instead of the policies.
