Biden said he is considering a pause on the federal gas tax, which some lawmakers in his party have pushed as a way to reduce prices at the pump for Americans.
"Well, I hope I have a decision based on the data I'm looking for ... by the end of the week," Biden said Monday on vacation in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
The gas tax adds 18.4 cents total per gallon of gasoline – 18.3 cents in excise tax plus 0.1 cent in a storage fee. For diesel, it is 24.3 cents plus the 0.1 cent fee. The national average price for a gallon was $4.981 on Monday, according to AAA.

most economists will agree that unemployment around 4-5% is optimal. unemployment at 0 sounds great but is completely impractical as it leaves no ability for companies to hire/expand. you need some job fluidity. the actual number is still contested (can look into NAIRU or read into it... some now think the 5% estimate is too high)
the more concerning part would be his suggestion that "we need two years of 7.5%" etc.

the background assumption that the problem is an overheated economy doesn't jibe with falling GDP, falling real wages and gaps on retail shelves. but even if we were to grant that the problem is purely demand and greedy workers, solving it on the backs of workers isn't the only possible solution, raising taxes never gets mentioned.
I found this reply to Summers persuasive. The whole piece is long and fairly wonky, but written clearly enough for non-technical readers like myself to understand.
In Section 6of the Working Paper, I identify various reasons why the evidentiary base of Domash and Summers’ (2022a) claim is not robust enough to substantiate their claim that the US is experiencing a wage-price spiral. A key point is that Domash and Summers assume that higher inflation is pushing up nominal wage growth. However, their own regression results show that inflation indexation is far from perfect: in 14 out of 21 regressions, the coefficient of lagged inflation on nominal wage growth in the US is notstatistically significant. This means that in two-thirds of their regressions, higher prices are found to reduce real wage one-for-one. In the remaining 7 regressions, the coefficient of lagged inflation on nominal wage growth takes an average value of 0.35. Hence, even when US labor markets are extremely tight, US workers are unable to protect their real wages—as their nominal wages grow only one-third as fast as the general price level. Higher inflation is extremely costly to workers, therefore. To single out higher nominal wages as a main causeof the increase in US inflation is not just incorrect, because wage growth barely manages to partially follow(not leading) inflation, but it is quite a stark example of blaming the victim.
Finally, I estimate a more complete econometric model which also includes supply-side constraints (in addition to the vacancy ratio). The estimation results suggest that, on average, 20.5% of (rising) PCE inflation can be attributed to the (rising) vacancy ratio (as a proxy of labor market tightness). However, global commodity prices and capacity utilization play more prominent roles and account for 67% and 35% of PCE inflation. Hence, labor market tightness does contribute to US inflation indeed, but supply-side constraints play a more important role. Besides, the labor market tightness itself is caused by the fact that labor demand has recovered more quickly than the effective labor force (as I discuss below).

Market power in consolidated sectors is real.
US inflation is also being driven by the pricing power and higher profits of corporations—a claim that Lawrence Summers rejected on Twitter as a form of ‘science denial’. But there is more than just anecdotal evidence that corporations with pricing power are using the current inflationary environment as a pretext to raise prices more than necessary because they do not have competitors to drive them to keep prices down. For instance, Fed economists Amiti et al. (2021) highlight the importance of (what they call) the strategic complementarity channel, which captures how much US firms adjust their prices in response to changes in the prices charged by their foreign competitors. To illustrate, if the price of imported cars increases, domestic car producers can also increase their prices. The strategic complementarity channel has been estimated to account for circa 30 percent of the effect of higher import prices on US inflation (Amiti et al. 2021).
The strategic complementarity channel does help to explain the profiteering by large US corporations which have been able to raise their profit margins to the highest level in 70 years. Nominal growth of corporate profits (by 35%) during 2021 has vastly outstripped nominal increases in the compensation of employees (10%) as well as the PCE inflation rate (6.1%). Using inflation as an excuse and helped by algorithmic pricing and AI, mega-corporations are choosing to raise prices to increase their profit margins – and they hold enough market power to do so without fear of losing customers to other competitors.
Winehole23
06-20-2022, 11:27 PM
Corporate profiteering is contributing to the inflation problem. According to The Wall Street Journal, nearly two out of three (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.com/amp/articles/inflation-yellen-biden-price-increase-cost-shipping-supply-chain-labor-shortage-pandemic-11636934826) of the biggest US publicly traded companies had larger profit margins this year than they did in 2019, prior to the pandemic (Broughton and Francis 2021). Nearly 100 of these corporations did report profits in 2021 that are 50 percent above profit margins from 2019. Evidence from corporate earnings calls shows that CEOs are boasting about their “pricing power,” meaning the ability to raise prices without losing customers (Groundwork Collaborative 2022 (https://groundworkcollaborative.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/22.02.07-THE-REAL-CULPRIT-BEHIND-RISING-PRICES-CORPORATE-GREED-1.pdf); Perkins 2022 (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/apr/27/inflation-corporate-america-increased-prices-profits?utm_term=6269293bdbd7fd143187b774a9de98c4&utm_campaign=GuardianTodayUS&utm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email&CMP=GTUS_email)). Even the Chair of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell (https://twitter.com/SenWarren/status/1480968784299110402), has weighed in on this issue, stating that large corporations with near-monopolistic market power are “raising prices because they can.”

Essentially, Summers and the wise mandarins who agree with him are saying that the most prudent course of action is to drive the economy over a cliff on purpose.
When the economy needs to be stimulated, we make the rich richer, and when we need to slow it down, we make the poor poorer. Seems not sustainable in the long run.

The PPP dwarfed stimulus checks and UI assistance 4-1 iirc, but you hear hardly anyone complaining about the inflationary effects of giving rich people money hand over fist, or of the Fed accelerating QE, or buying corporate bonds. Greedy, undeserving poor people are always to blame.

I’ve already said it’s ghoulish to suggest that getting unemployment north of 5 or 7 or 10 for extended periods of time.
I’m generally in favor of increasing taxes on the wealthy but i don’t see that as being anti inflationary for much outside of housing. Groceries aren’t getting expensive because richie rich is using his wealth to buy tons of cabbage and avocados

TBH, Summers is full of himself and wants to remain relevant. Plus, he is a first class bullshitter. I have heard him painfully stretch two sentences into a 15 minute speech because he was unprepared and yes, he sounded like a retard.
Here’s why Larry Summers wants 10 million people to lose their job.
Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers says there needs to be a surge in unemployment to curb inflation, which Federal Reserve policymakers say doesn’t need to happen for price growth to cool off.
According to Bloomberg News, Summers said in a speech on Monday from London there needs to be a lasting period of an unemployment rise to contain inflation — either, a one year spike to 10%, two years of 7.5% unemployment, or five years of 6% unemployment.

For the knock on to fifty solid years of wage contraction to be five years of Fed enforced austerity because the tide briefly turned -- and didn't even keep up with inflation, real wages are falling right now -- is cruel and perverse.

when i pointed out that the most recent massive stimulus went disproportionately to the worker, you brushed it off as a tangent. can you demonstrate how tax hikes would curb inflation and help with the CPI? it boils down to a supply/demand issue. taxing the rich isnt going to increase supply, nor is it going to meaningfully decrease demand.

Biden accepts the knee bend.
Senators unveil text of bipartisan deal on gun violence, setting up speedy vote.
After weeks of negotiation, a bipartisan group of senators released their anti-gun violence bill on Tuesday evening -- setting up a vote in the upper chamber as early as this week.
The four key senators on the deal were Republicans John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Democrats Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona. The group came together after a mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, last month killed 19 elementary school students and two teachers.
The bill marks a step forward in advancing that agreement, which was supported by 10 Democrats and 10 Republicans, enough to overcome a filibuster. That framework had outlined plans for a law that would include expanded background checks for those ages 18-21 as well as funding for school safety and mental health programs, funds to incentivize violence prevention programs in states and the closure of the so-called "boyfriend loophole" regarding which convicted domestic abusers can possess firearms.

The U.S. economy has a short-term problem and a more enduring long-term problem. The first is high inflation and hence decreasing real wages, which makes it hard to sustain growth in an economy mostly dependent on consumer spending. Second, over the past 50 years we have seen a troubling drop in investment—whether for infrastructure or industrial activity or basic necessities—that has inflated the cost of things like housing and health care while leaving the nation vulnerable to supply crunches caused by the pandemic and Russia’s war on Ukraine.
The decided-upon cure for the short-term problem—rising interest rates from the Federal Reserve—is degrading the long-term problem. What’s more, it’s unlikely to make more than a small dent in rising prices.
Millions of Americans are going to be deliberately thrown out of work because an economic model says (https://twitter.com/IrvingSwisher/status/1538976082849931267) that’s the only way to blunt inflation, while the seed corn of the next generation is eaten and the basic investments we need to sustain a productive economy are put off.
The Fed’s preferred tactic is demand destruction. They want to reduce Americans’ capacity to spend money, bringing it more in line with available supply. Larry Summers said this out loud (https://twitter.com/JStein_WaPo/status/1539012452905627650) the other day, arguing that the nation must increase the unemployment rate to 5 percent for 5 years in order to bring inflation in line. It’s at 3.6 percent now, which roughly speaking means that 2-3 million people must lose their jobs for the foreseeable future, in Summers’ perfect world.
The Rube Goldberg-like mechanism for getting this done is that the Fed raises interest rates high enough so it’s costlier for businesses and individuals to borrow. These borrowing costs are rising more rapidly than at any time since the early 1980s (https://twitter.com/DomWh1te/status/1538883344842346500). If it works as intended, that will eventually filter down into less consumer spending, reduced hiring and wages, and lower inflation.
We’re already seeing this work. The housing market’s decline, with home sales now falling (https://www.nar.realtor/newsroom/existing-home-sales-fell-3-4-in-may-median-sales-price-surpasses-400000-for-the-first-time) over the past couple months, is a direct result of mortgage rates rising (https://www.bankrate.com/mortgages/mortgage-rates-surge-6-percent/) over 6 percent, in line with both Fed actions and the expectation of more interest-rate hikes in the future. That amplification—the benchmark interest rate is only at 1.75 percent now, but mortgages are much higher—is replicated to some degree (https://www.employamerica.org/content/images/2022/06/image-25.png) in corporate and Treasury borrowing.
In short, what higher interest rates do is crush investment across the board. As Skanda Amaranth of the research group Employ America explained on Tuesday (https://www.employamerica.org/blog/the-first-dose-of-supply-side-damage-is-here-the-dark-side-of-fed-and-financial-conditions-tightening/), Federal Reserve tightening doesn’t just hit the demand side of the equation, but the supply side as well. And this comes precisely at the time when more investment is desperately needed.
Take the housing market, for example. The mortgage rate shock reduces home sales. But we know from experience that a sagging market will also reduce home completions. After the housing bubble collapsed, we had serious disinvestment (https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/HOUST) in new housing. Importantly, this lasted for a decade, as homebuilders grew wary of adding units into a sclerotic economy, lest they be unable to sell new homes. This under-building is a major reason rents and home prices have rocketed over the past year, and has made it hard to grow out of the problem, as key inputs like lumber consolidated (https://www.wsj.com/articles/despite-lumber-boom-few-new-sawmills-coming-11621243982) during the depressed years and cut their capacity to the bone.
Though 2022 is expected to be the biggest year for housing completions since 2006, Amaranth points to permits and starts falling (https://www.employamerica.org/blog/the-first-dose-of-supply-side-damage-is-here-the-dark-side-of-fed-and-financial-conditions-tightening/) amid the rougher conditions. We all know that we need more housing in America. But the market’s cyclical nature means that the Fed’s measures to slam housing will make the homebuilding gap worse over the long term.
You can apply this logic to virtually everything that policymakers want. There’s a desire to bring semiconductor manufacturing (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/17/us/politics/semiconductors-congress-chips.html) to the U.S., to create good-paying jobs and sustain reliable supplies of computer chips. But as borrowing costs rise, that investment will simply not stretch as far. Congress already passed an infrastructure law to better move goods across the country and increase resiliency to climate-fueled weather events. But that law is now stunted (https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/17/democrats-shrinking-infrastructure-plan-00039588) because of billowing financing costs. We urgently need to invest in a green transition to prevent the worst ravages of the climate crisis. That just got more expensive too, and companies that might have invested in green energy could be priced out.
When investment is held back, critical infrastructure withers (https://twitter.com/tracyalloway/status/1539022181497294848?cxt=HBwWgMC-2aOh2tsqAAAA&cn=ZmxleGlibGVfcmVjcw%3D%3D&refsrc=email), inventories deplete, institutional memory gets lost, reshoring grows more difficult, and dominant firms build more market power amid lack of investment from rivals. It’s a ghastly scenario, and it’s mostly self-inflicted.
https://prospect.org/the-fed-is-crushing-investment-right-when-we-need-it/
Winehole23

Even worse, the Fed’s strategy might not cure the disease. It’s hard to attribute inflation entirely to an economy running hot when there hasn’t been any economic stimulus in 15 months and fiscal policy has now turned sharply negative (https://www.brookings.edu/interactives/hutchins-center-fiscal-impact-measure/). What looks to be the greater problem is a simple shortage in physical capacity (https://www.employamerica.org/researchreports/the-physical-capacity-shortage-view-of-inflation/) to sustain a decent standard of living. The main pockets of inflation right now are in fuel, which is rising because of supply shocks from Ukraine and a bottleneck in refining capacity (https://prospect.org/environment/hidden-driver-of-high-gas-prices/); food, also stunted due to the war; and housing, damaged by a decade of underbuilding. Investment is needed to deal with all of these categories, but thanks to the Fed, investment is now harder to do. Indeed, researchers from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco itself recently concluded (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-06-21/supply-issues-account-for-half-of-us-inflation-rise-study-shows) that problems other than demand account for about two-thirds of current inflation.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates the container shipping boom in 2021 accounted for 1.5 percentage points of global price rises this year, or about a quarter of the U.S. inflation rate.
“The impact of shipping costs on inflation is large and widespread, affecting countries around the world,” said Yan Carriere-Swallow, senior economist at the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department.
While higher food and oil prices in the wake of Russia’s occupation of Ukraine feed through to consumer prices within two months, it can take up to a year to feel the full effects of container shipping costs, Carriere-Swallow said.
What’s more, COVID-19 outbreaks are still disrupting ports in China and while bigshipping firms have ordered a record volume of new, supersize container vessels, most won’t come online until next year or 2024.
“The current still-high freight rates will continue to put pressure on consumer prices well into 2023,”

then again, maybe that's the point
A policy that drops housing starts amid a long-term homebuilding gap is a self-destructive policy. A policy that makes investment costlier when we need infrastructure and energy overhauls is similarly unproductive.

President Joe Biden called on Congress on Wednesday to pass a three-month gas tax holiday as Americans face record-high energy prices.
While some economists have long questioned the effectiveness of such a policy, there's another notable skeptic that hits much closer to home for Biden: former President Barack Obama.
When the exact same idea was floated in 2008, Obama torched it as a "gimmick" and argued that politicians who pushed such a policy were really just interested in scoring political points and keeping their jobs.
"Well, let me tell you, this isn't an idea designed to get you through the summer, it's designed to get them through an election," Obama said

Sure...I do to. And when you combine that with experience, it's a good mix. Unfortunately Biden (and Trump) seem to have already lost their mental faculties. It's hard for me to fathom that those were the two choices we had.

President Trump was in touch with reality enough to lodge 3-THREE-3 ringers on that SC and all 3 have held fast to their word they'd given him in the interview.
It do not get better than that.

President Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Monday stepped in to interrupt French President Emmanuel Macron as he broke bad news to Biden — with journalists feet away — about attempts to get Arab nations to produce more oil to lower record gas prices.
“Careful. maybe we should just step inside… because of the cameras,” Sullivan said, motioning to journalists covering the G-7 summit in Germany.
It’s unclear if Sullivan was concerned about any particular nugget of news leaking to journalists, but some of Macron’s words were clearly audible.
“I had a call with MBZ,” Macron told Biden, referring to the leader of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan. “He told me two things. I’m at a maximum, maximum [production capacity]. This is what he claims… And then he said [the] Saudis can increase by 150 [thousands barrels per day]. Maybe a little bit more, but they don’t have huge capacities before six months’ time.”

JOE BIDEN (https://www.foxnews.com/category/person/joe-biden)
Published June 30, 2022 5:34pm EDT
FLASHBACK: Biden said it's 'dangerous' to 'delegitimize the courts' in 2017.
Biden said recent Supreme Court decisions have been 'destabilizing.'
President Joe Biden characterized the Supreme Court as "destabilizing" Thursday, but previously criticized former President Donald Trump for attacking the courts.Biden remarked in 2017 (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/biden-support-ending-filibuster-protect-abortion-access)that the former president's criticism of "institutional structures that govern us" was "dangerous" during an event in Washington, D.C., The New York Daily News reported at the time. He then urged Trump to take a more "presidential" tone in the future."When you delegitimize the courts, you delegitimize the legislative body, it's corrosive and it makes it almost impossible to reach compromise," Biden said during the 2017 speech. "We're a diverse nation... this democracy, in order to function, you have to remember it requires consensus at the end of the day."
"Without consensus we have chaos and it's not just Joe Biden saying this, it's our Constitution," he continued. "We know the court when it rules has the right to overrule a Congress or a president."
