Very rarely does the presidents party do good in the midterms. Even Reagan did poorly while winning 41 and 49 states in the presidential elections (Rs lost house and senate seats in both 82 and 86 before routing the Democrats again in 88's presidential election).

The two most recent good examples are 98 and 2002. In 98 Republicans drove everyone sick by constantly trying to impeach Clinton and having the endless Starr probe witch-hunt I think and 2002 was a rallying around the flag effect from 9/11. So you need the other party to really, really fuck up or a historical event almost. In reality the Republicans are fucking up badly every day by existing at this point with their maga bullshit but in today's environment they don't even get penalized for it so 2022 will almost definitely be bad.
