You guys have got to remember that it doesn't matter how hard the Spurs FO is working, other teams have to agree to any deal as well :lol
Same with the Nuggets. Been working the phones hard but all they are getting is 'no' . Can't do much about that, unless you want to overpay :smokin
Don't try they don't believe in such common sense.

Hopefully we can get a last minute dumping of Mason and/or Bonner..I don't want anybody in return..
Since the Wiz are going to buy out Gooden, maybe we should bring him back.
yeah, I'm sure Gooden will want to come back. He had such a great time here.

Thats what I noticed as well. Most of the players the Spurs seemed to want, were traded for draft picks. I guess the Spurs expiring contracts were not enticing enough. Personally I'm glad the Spurs did not trade their 1st rounder, since it looks like it will be a higher pick than recent picks. Still pissed that no deal, even a minor one happened.

Shut the fuck up. This team isn't in "perennial contender" mode anymore in case you haven't noticed. They are in win-now, all-in mode. They are spending more money than we will probably ever see in our lifetimes to give TIM the best shot at another ring while he is still good enough to do it. And guess what? They have almost no shot this year. Yeah, I said it. Too many things are going wrong for this team to beat 4 teams in the playoffs.
This is for Tim. That is why Spurs fans are unhappy. Do you think Tim cares about the rings he's already won? All he cares about is winning the next one. And unless the FO can show us once more why they have been considered one of the best in pro sports this past decade, or the players can somehow turn it all around, we have every right to be pissed about the direction of the team. After all Tim has done, by giving the fans all the titles they want, he deserves to get what he wants, which is another one.
The Spurs are 5th in the west. But Portland, the #8 team, is only 1 game behind. Missing the playoffs is a very real possibility, and even getting in doesn't mean anything. Its not like the past where the Spurs could be happy with just making the playoffs and feel confident about beating anyone. There hasn't been any talk of "we don't care what seed we are." But that was because they knew they were as good as the teams with the top seeds, and they went out and proved it. If the team was good enough to win the trophy, seeding didn't matter. But this team is different. They know they aren't as good as the Lakers. Barely clawing into the playoffs means this team is hardly a contender for anything but the best Gone Fishin' picture on Inside the NBA. Who thought the Spurs would be one-and-done last year? Do they look any better to you this year?
I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!
Sorry I had to add that at the end there

Would have been nice to trade for Ronnie Brewer, assuming he could have been had with just a draft pick. He's a solid, young, swingman who gets lots of steals. Memphis has it pretty good with Brewer and Sam Young, if Rudy Gay decides to leave.
ace3g
02-18-2010, 05:24 PM
yeah if it only took a draft pick to take Brewer I would have gone for him, hell even if it was for a draft pick and mason. He is on my fantasy team and puts up good numbers in both rebounds, steals, blocks.
Would have been a good defensive player to put in the starting lineup, he was the starting SG for the Jazz, would have provided good length on the perimeter.
I think that is one of the main problems for the Spurs, they don't have enough speed, length, defense on the perimeter to keep players out of the paint. Reason I wanted Salmons because he is a decent defender on the perimeter.
jesterbobman
02-18-2010, 05:49 PM
It took a draft pick and the Memphis TE that saves the Jazz money to get Brewer, We couldn't have gotten him unless Memphis wanted Mason for Arthur/Carroll, Then we traded that TE and a pick to Utah to get him. I'd rather keep the pick.

I have said all along, a move did not seem likely. Nothing added up to making a move. I just hope the FO has not given up on trying to help Duncan get another ring. They know they can't do it as is, but without making a move, what does that tell Duncan? What is their plan for his last 2 years. Sucks, because he and Manu are just one year older.
Why re-sign Manu as well? If the Spurs are not contenders, no use in having him.

Anybody figure out who was the team making a last minute push to pick up Amare??? Chad Ford announced it on twitter, but the team was never revealed..

a lot of deals have been on the table the Spurs likely could have pulled to improve this team if they wanted. this years trade market was bigger than ever, asking prices were lower than ever. what hurts IMO: some pretty young players with great potential were on the market for an obviously resonable asking price. (TT, Brewer, D. Wright, Warrick, Alexander, Augustine, McGuire)
at least they could have done something for the future. f*ck RC!

Spurs FO is boring.
A lot of good players were moved the last few days and the spurs again could not do anything to improve the team.

The truth about what exactly?..we were obviously hopeful for a trade, it only made sense with the expiring contracts and cheap assets that were being dangled by other teams..
I know what you mean, but obviously it's better to be hopeful when it comes to something like this..the FO is ass right now..

They're thinking they made their investments in the offseason. That was their trade deadline deal. It was a plan that blew up in their face. This season has sucked the wind out of the Spurs sails. Maybe if they were one player away, you would of seen a move, but cleary, they need more than a defensive big to fill the paint. Their going to wing it the remainder of the season and pray Jefferson comes into his own, Blair matures at light speed and Mcdyess has a strong second half. But, without a miraculous turnaround, don't expect another trip into luxury tax anytime soon.

Like mountainballer said though, it didn't have to be a move that made the Spurs into contenders..most of us knew that the Spurs weren't going to be contenders, it was obvious well before the deadline..there were plenty of young/interesting players that were acquired for almost nothing or that were apparently on the table for nothing..
Obviously I realize that the FO probably felt like there's no point of acquiring a player like that, but that ties into the whole mentality of this current Spurs franchise that seems to have very little willingness to try to develop any young talent..

What young players were had for next to nothing? Perhaps i'm missing something but young players were only to be had if we were...
A. Willing to take on a longer term contract.
B. Trade them a draft pick thusly defeating the purpose of acquiring said young player unless you can be reasonably sure this player is better then anything that you will draft.
I'm disappointed as well that the FO wasn't able to get anything done since this year is turning out so lousy but I understand that trades are difficult to make and even more difficult to make work.

I don't understand the logic of this statement, when the Spurs were apparently unwilling to lose either Blair, Hill or presumably Splitter in trades that may have had some short-term benefit for the Spurs (i.e. Stoudemire).
The Spurs ARE willing to keep and mold young talent. They just want to make sure that talent is proven before they give up picks or players to get them.
I also think that there are some who believe the lack of results this trade deadline stem from a lack of action. Personally, I don't think this is the case. I'm pretty sure the Spurs would have gotten rid of their expiring contracts to improve if the other teams had bit...but other teams simply outbid them.
And the elephant in the room is RJ and his enormous contract. Having an albatross like that weighing down the team salary for this season and the next probably hamstrung the FO more than anything else.
So now what?
Well, the Spurs have to accept this as their team going forward and play to the utmost of their ability. Will it be enough to challenge in the playoffs? Who knows.
What I know is that as a Spurs fan I'll be there watching them the whole way.

By the way...I'll also take solace in a few more things going into next year.
1) That albatross of a contract turns into a pretty nice expiring deal next year. Ditto for Dice.
2) The continued growth of Blair and Hill.
3) The potential of adding an athletic 7-footer to the front line with an NBA-ready game.

I also think that there will still be opportunity, threat of a lockout or not. Whenever there are teams that are truly in rebuilding mode and they have larger long-term contract, there's a possibility for a deal to get done.
Right now I'd say Iggy and Big Al are the two most likely, but you never know how things could change a year from now...

Yep. I think it had more to do with the draft pick than anything else. I fail to see how that contradicts what I said though.

outbid?
beside the fact that there must be something wrong about the reported trade pieces (Bobcats can't trade their first rounder IMO, theirs went to Nuggets and then to Wolves), Law and Murray are for sure not a package that's capable to outbid anything.
(the 3rd team since his draft has accepted the fact that he just isn't NBA material and Murray is likely the least effective "scorer" in the league. there is a reason why he was on 7 different teams in the last 5 years).

I know the deadline has passed, but this is the time when you find out about potential trades or trade targets that never came to pass. I saw this one in a post-deadline article on ESPN.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=TradeEval-100219-1
Negative spin: It felt as though the Spurs needed to be much more active at the trade deadline. The team is getting too old. I was looking for San Antonio to shake things up more. They explored deals for Amare Stoudemire and Corey Maggette but couldn't make things happen.
So the Spurs actually targeted Maggette. Now I imagine the offer included RJ, which is why nothing happened...but it brings up an interesting point.
Might a deal for Maggette (and maybe Randolph?) be struck up again in the off-season when RJs contract becomes an expiring one? Would you be in favor of such a trade?
