T-Spence @tspence26 (https://twitter.com/tspence26) 22s
(https://twitter.com/tspence26/status/487852779394707456)I am not disrespecting anyone who reported this new info a little bit ago, but I am being told that the Lakers/Bulls trade options not true.
T-Spence @tspence26 (https://twitter.com/tspence26) 52s (https://twitter.com/tspence26/status/487852953475104769)
And also am being updated that Pau Gasol will, and I quote, "absolutely, 100 percent, no doubt" be a San Antonio Spur.
T-Spence @tspence26 (https://twitter.com/tspence26) 12s (https://twitter.com/tspence26/status/487853121108844545)
That info was literally as current as 11:56 California time. This is going to be very, very interesting.

Bulls currently have more than $66 mil in committed payroll; MLE to Pau would put them at about $71.6 million. BAE to Mirotic at $74 mil.
What would amnestying Boozer do? And isn't the cap ~$63 million? How were the Bulls ever going to go out and get Melo (S&T?)?
Sorry if these are dumb questions. I'm not good with CBA/salary shit.

Boozer's game is predicated on that horrible excuse of a shot and yelling every time he goes to the rim

i think the Spurs are his preferred MLE option, or else the Bulls would just give him MLE... he's choosing the bulls because they're gna offer money + role + chance to compete, something that no other team is really doing at this point.
The Lakers and Hawks are offering >MLE money and large roles, but no chance to compete
If forced to settle for the MLE, it has basically been made known that he favors SA
He will choose the Bulls only if they are able to give him a number greater than the MLE, imo

No need to close our eyes and keep dreaming.
He goes to Chicago after spursnation stated too.
He decided and sides are exploring for a sign & trade way. If they can't find it, he will sign MLE.
I couldn't understand why he choose Bulls over us. We've won the championship, playing a dream basketball and has an excellent front-office.
I really couldn't get it when the matter is not money.

Let's not kid ourselves, if Pau was joining he likely would have just announced his decision by now rather than saying I am close to a decision. There's no point in saying that, unless there are obstacles that need to be removed (Chicago sign and trade with Los Angeles or whatever). If he wanted to be a Spur, it would have been simply announced that he's signing and we wouldn't have been waiting since last night.

Dude, the Lakers stole a pick from the Rockets already. With Gasol cap hold, they had to submit the trade by
last night I assume in order for the Lin trade to go through. Which means they had to renounce Gasol's rights by now.
The reason I don't believe this report from Marca is that nothing was submitted to the league office. When it gets to the point you are taking a physical, something had to be submitted, and it would have been news already. Everyone basing this report on a guy tweeting from across the pond. Last reports is that a sign and trade fell through from shelbourne.
This guy probably woke up and saw this trade but failed to realize it fell through. His last tweet suggest that this. It is waiting on a S&T w the Lakers is what the report says. Well we all know that. This is what was going on last night. If the S&T fell through, Pau was going to sign w Spurs. No trade has been approve or agreed upon, otherwise we would be hearing about the details right now. Last reports stateside was that the trade fell through.
Time to accept Pau is a Bull. If they have a deal, they'll find a way to get it done.

S&T cannot happen if Lakers have renounced Gasol's rights and do not have sufficient space otherwise.
Not sure if that is the case. From what I've seen, they probably have the ability to sign a player to a greater than MLE level contract.
Regardless, he rejected a 2 year contract from Los Angeles reportedly averaging $10mil a year. It remains unlikely that would've been done without a plan to get that level of $ elsewhere.
Anyways, no need to freak out at the rumors of the moment. For the Spurs to land Gasol this needs to play out a certain way and that will take a little time, and there was always a slim chance of this working out. Will Chicago be able to part with assets to make it worth LA's while?

Exactly, from what I recall the Spurs had a trade lineup for AK last year and it fell through. Latest reports is they're working on it. If the Bulls are willing part with assets being require to get a 34 yo player, well let them be that stupid. Lakers want the Kings pick and jimmy butler from what I hear to take Boozers contract. Lakers will totally be fleecing the Bulls if that happens.
Bulls should go the Stephenson route if their smart.

This article says its best. If the Bulls land Gasol it's via Amensty Boozer and straight signing him. That Spanish report is more than likely false. IF they amnesty Boozer they will lose the MLE and BAE. They will have 5mil cap space to work w if they sign Gasol to a 10mil a year deal. But they lose the BAE and Have to pay 17 mil on a guy that isn't even on their roster. Just don't see the Bulls doing this when they have more of a need at SG at this point and they have a real shot of landing Stephenson.

Exactly. He is 32, has won two rings, and is looking for as much money as he can at the end of his career. He didn't turn down that Laker offer, as well as that Atlanta offer without a reasonable expectation that he can get $10 mill per year at a team of his choice.

The Spurs getting Gasol would have been the rich getting richer, the best getting deeper. If he doesn't sign here, its not a big deal. Whats great is that we have the personnel to limit his effectiveness against us. Looking at this objectively, I would go to Chicago if I was him. Of course, I'm assuming he's competitive, wants a chance to play lots of minutes and wants to start.

This isn't a bad year at all. Not only did we win a championship, we had an excellent draft pick drop to us, the Mafia Empire broke up, our players and coach re-uped, our worst competitors either got worse or didn't improve, and we may have an "insider" at ST again as well as finally sign a decent free agent instead of being the brides' maid.

I'm being told RC Buford has personally delivered homemade tamales and empanadas to Pau and his family. Spurs are now way out in front of Chicago.
Pau has also expressed interest in living in a city with "a lot of brown girls" but "not too 'brown' [Chicago]." I am 100% confident in my sources being 100% confident of Pau liking international things. Pau to Spurs is a done deal.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne late Friday that a sign-and-trade arrangement had not been struck, with the Lakers still looking for draft compensation -- as they received in Friday's earlier trade with theHouston Rockets (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/hou/houston-rockets) to take back the contract ofJeremy Lin (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/4299/jeremy-lin) -- as the primary return for Gasol.
ESPN.com reported earlier Friday that the Bulls and San Antonio Spurs (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/sa/san-antonio-spurs) had emerged as the two leading candidates to land Gasol, with San Antonio poised to land the Spaniard if the Bulls and Lakers could not finalize a sign-and-trade deal.
Sources told ESPN.com late Friday that the Bulls were prioritizing their pursuit of Gasol even ahead of their long-running efforts to sign Carmelo Anthony (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/1975/carmelo-anthony), fearing that Anthony is likely to stay with the New York Knicks (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/_/name/ny/new-york-knicks).

Agreed. I didn't say anything differently.
Michale Finley, Boris Diaw, Damon Stoudamire and Nick Van Exel were all considered big name FA at the time they signed here.
Nick Van Exel was 34 years old and coming off the worst season of his career before signing with the Spurs. It was the last season he ever played.
Damon Stoudamire was 34 years old and barely an NBA quality player before signing with the Spurs. He was out of the League after averaging 13 MPG in his one year with the Spurs.
Boris Diaw was coming off his worst year in the League and had just been released by the worst team in the NBA before signing with the Spurs.
Michael Finley is the "biggest" FA signing on your list. He was 32 years old and had just been waived by Dallas to avoid luxury tax. He was a slightly better than average role player who didn't play defense.
None were considered "big name FA" when they were signed. Michael Finley was the closest thing when he picked the Spurs over the Heat.

It's not even that. There are a few things they could give (pick + lower end players possibly). The point is LA can't do a S&T with what has currently been reported. They would have to formally announce they are stretching Nash for any of this to be possible (unless the renege on other moves already reported).

Well if the "reports" are true that Pau will choose SA unless there is a S&T with CHI, it stands to reason why CHI would be willing to give things up.
It also jives with what is going on and CHI/LA scrambling to get a S&T done. If Pau was willing to play for the MLE, it's very likely CHI would just sign him and cut out LA. Although, CHI is really, really cheap and they may not be willing to spend the MLE because they aren't sending salary out.

If the MLE is what's on the table between the Bulls and SA, a factor to consider would be Texas' lack of a state income tax. I would imagine Pau and his agent would weigh that in as well, considering how much of a savings that would be by avoiding a tax in Illinois. I believe Illinois has a flat income tax rate of 5%. Just a thought.

Is there any sort of time limitation with this S&T once the process begins?
Marcus Bryant
07-12-2014, 10:14 AM
It's not even that. There are a few things they could give (pick + lower end players possibly). The point is LA can't do a S&T with what has currently been reported. They would have to formally announce they are stretching Nash for any of this to be possible (unless the renege on other moves already reported).
What does their cap look like? If they renounced Gasol's rights that freed up at least $20mil.

Not so willing, they are turned down a couple of offers from last nights reports. Lakers don't want to get fleeced. Bulls don't want to get fleeced. Lets fleece a 3rd party. No team is going to trade for Boozer when they know they can get him for next to nothing if the Bulls amnesty him and take on Nash's contract as well. This s&t is dead IMO.

It all comes down to just how badly Chicago wants him, tbh. If they're willing to give up assets for him or amnesty Boozer, then there isn't much we can do about it. If they're like us and just want to use their MLE, then he comes to San Antonio.
No point in getting all excited anymore, it was fun last night, but now it's just annoying. lol

The other problem with Chicago using the MLE is how that jives with the reports that they were close to a deal to bring over Mirotic. The presumption has been that he would get paid out of the MLE (same situation as Splitter, 1st round pick that waited three years and won't sign for the rookie scale).

35mil yesterday.
8mil for Lin.
9mil for Hill.
5mil for Swaggy.
That leaves them just a little over 5 mil on cap space. MLE anyone.

Not any more. With renouncing Gasol (amongst other things) LA had about 24-26M in cap space. They signed Lin for 8M, Jordan Hill for 9M and Young for 5M. That is 22 of their 26M (for sake of high end). Leaves them with only 4M left (but very likely its more like 2M). They don't have any cap space to sign Gasol for the sign part of the S&T.
In order to do that, they have a few options (none of which have been reported): Stretch Nash. That gives them about 5M more to work with in cap space for a new total of 7-9M. That would get Pau more than the MLE and make sense in him choosing CHI (if reports are true that he only chooses there for more money in a S&T).
The second option is to renege on some of the deals before to get the cap space. There are a few other really complex options, but nothing at all has been reported at this point.

Great point. Basically, S&T is the only option and that seems incredibly unlikely at this point because 1) Nothing has been reported which would physically allow for that to happen & 2) It's really complex between these two teams because of LA's cap situation and assets going back and forth.
If CHI really wants him, they obviously have the means to get him, but their own self-imposed logic/limitations appear to be real. They don't appear ready to amnesty Boozer effectively paying Pau 16M + his new contract for one player. They don't appear to be willing to use the MLE on Pau because that would mean it would cost them Mirotic.
A S&T appears to be the only real option and that means CHI has to talk LA into stretching Nash and taking that hit on their cap next year and beyond (for which they would want to be compensated for) OR talking LA into reneging on the other moves (Lin - for which they got a first round pick so not happening / Hill and/or Young - which would look really bad on them business wise).
Other than that, LA would have to do some incredible maneuvering in the timing/structure of each individual deal in order for a S&T to be possible.

Atlanta?
There was a report last night that Atlanta made a lucrative offer.
I think you have a short memory. The Spurs have never been in a position to land a $$ FA. These guys were coveted by other teams besides the Spurs and decided to come here. 2 of them that didn't suck out loud won rings. Hell, Robert Horry is a forgotten FA that got a couple of rings here too.
You're full blown retarded if you think Nick Van Exel and Stoudamire were "big name FA" when they signed with the Spurs.
Van Exel was so "coveted" he signed with the Spurs for $1MM. Stoudamire was so coveted he signed for $500,000. Aside from maybe Boris, none of the names on the list you provided were anything near their primes when they signed with the Spurs. Boris signed with the Spurs because of Tony.
The Spurs have had money available and not been able to lure big names. Rasho Nesterovic was the best the Spurs could do with cap space in '03.

The real key is if Pau himself is willing to choose CHI over SA for the MLE. If that is the case, it's really likely no matter what has been reported (or what we think) they get him.
At the end of the day, if signing Pau for the MLE means they can't bring over Mirotic (for one more year possibly - logically it means more probably) they probably go that route vs giving up more assets to work a S&T if that's what it boils down to. It all hinges on Pau's willingness to choose CHI over SA apples-to-apples.

Near max cap space before matching Parsons, less than MLE-sized chunk after.

I'm beginning to think the Gasol camp has used SA from the jump as leverage with the Bulls to get a deal done that pays him more money. I think they have floated rumor after rumor, tweet after tweet of his imminent signing with SA to spook LA and Chicago into getting a deal done. He's a European, has played in all the big European cites, played in LA and I think his preference is to go to Chicago, or even the NYK after Melo announces. I think SA is third on Gasol's list at the MLE. He and his agent will fully exhaust working LAL, Chicago and NYK before conceding and signing with the SAS. He is 34, at the end of his career and is looking for as much money as possible with a good team and situation.

Well, it's a timing issue. They would only have one day to talk to Gasol and get him to agree before they have to match Parsons. Timing is critical and one would imagine they are wayyyyyy behind the 8-ball on that one (although things can move very quickly).
Plus, would HOU really want to pair Gasol with Dwight again? Money is there, but it's an incredibly tight window for HOU at the moment.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here but I think the Lakers can renounce Gasol, S&T him to the Bulls while they have enough cap space and afterwards excecute the Lin trade (just reported as agreed upon, doesn't mean it's been done already) and those other deals for Young, Hill.
The Bulls should be able to give Gasol around 11mil/year if you combine Dunleavy and their unguaranteed guys.
