The lineup is not that bad as people make our out to be. We should be the 3rd best team record wise in the West- behind the warriors and rockets. Kyle is gone, Marco. Is back. Derozan and gay are solid.

Bertans did the same last week or maybe a bit earlier. Says he wants to focus on establishing his new role with the team. Said he would've played for the NT in September if only offered the minimum and uncertain role/PT.

It's funny how Nick is now giving Duncan props when a year ago in the spring of 2017 he dissed Duncan. I'll never forget a rant he went on when he said that Duncan was never the best player in the league during his time with SA. I guess Duncan is now great in Nick's eyes since he hates Kobe for going against his god Lebron.

Agreed. Nick also said last season that a former Spur wasn't even top 20 because he couldn't play a whole season but this summer he was saying the same player was a top 3 in the league just because there was a chance this player to join LeBron in LA. Nick is all about LBJ. Still can't believe that both guys, Carter and Wright, have a show on TV. Just pathetic.

Only scenario where Kawhi would have stayed is if the spurs got Uncle Dennis assassinated. His Uncle was the ultimate decider in this situation and he was hellbent in getting Kawhi to LA. You need to let it go there was no chance in hell of Kawhi ever staying.

There was the story/leak/narrative that Kawhi wanted lighter workouts, which seemed oddly inconsistent with his gym-rat persona. And the later story/leak (accompanied by the story of his having to walk to the All-Star game in New Orleans) that he didn't like how controlling PATFO was.

They are all over the place. Which of course is why most Spurs fans and majority of sports fans felt Kawhi turned his back on the Spurs, fans, and team. Nothing credible has come out to refute otherwise.

To me, Jamal would be a bad risk.
One, he's about washed up, not making shots anymore and getting even worse on defense.
Two, he'll probably block the progress and minutes of Derrick White
Three, if Pop eventually benches Crawford for being washed up, he's right there to poison Dejounte with talk about how disrespectful the team is, how bad they treat players, Kawhi was right, watch yourself, etc etc. Never forget 'classy' Micheal Finley, who tanked until he was given the starter job and was given the 07 winning game ball iirc. What did classy Finley do the minute Pop finally realized he was washed and benched him and took his minutes down to nothing, about two years later than he should? Finley immediately asked for release so he could join a 'contender'. He was a class fraud
Similar risk with Crawford considering how much Dejounte looks up to him.
Coaching intern? Yes. Player? No. Regardless of Manu.

IF Crawford is a potential signing by SAS, I have mixed feelings about this. Yeah, he may not have anything left in the tank, but more importantly, he doesn't fit the bill for the glaring need, which is the 3 position. Perhaps he can have a resurgence in his twilight career, playing alongside Murray, whom I'm sure that he would love and benefit from playing next to his idol. But the BIG question is: would either Crawford or Manu, or both, have a big impact on the player development of the younger players from a negative standpoint? Oh yeah, retaining Ginobili or signing Crawford for the vet minimum, on one hand, would secure needed veteran leadership on the bench and in the locker room, but again, what about the SF position and playing time for the younger players? Since SAS may have already maxed out its salary cap, the only thing I believe is available is vet minimum deals, rookie salaries, and two-way contracts, let alone, the roster spots are just about completely filled up. SAS needs a SF who can defend and possibly score. So, who is available out there who is "Spursiy enough;" knows the system and can be had for the cheap, cause for one, this organization is very frugal, and secondly, they are too loyal to trade. But right now, I believe that the decision making outcome is hinging on Ginobili's decision, and at the end of the day, I can see SAS possibly making their decision by keeping it "in house" by signing someone like Blossomgame to a rookie deal or to a two-way contract. But once Manu's decision has been made, then I think that SAS will move forward with who will be invited/available for preseason training camp and beyond. Time will tell, but GSG!!!

I think I read that crawford was the worst player in the league last year in a certain minute category. Plus I think we have enough offense options and we need more dependable defenders with size, ie SF. Unfortunately, there is nothing left, and whoever the Spurs wan to get now will be the 15th of even 17th player. May as well just stick with Hillard. The only reasonable trade target that spurs could swap Mills with is Harkless. And although this is an upgrade in a position of need, its a downgrade in a player to player swap. For it to happen, Murray, white, Walker and Forbes all would need to be playing well enough to just dump Mills without giving up a pick. Porter from Washington could be had. I think the Wizards may part with him due to the bloated contract.

I wish we had interest in Corey Brewer. He doesn’t provide everything we need(His 3pt shot is pretty terrible). But he’s a smart vet with length. Good spark plug off the bench, can be utilized as a SF/PF in Small Ball lineups, and can give you 15 minutes of above average defense.

Hmmm... after reading articles on Crawford on Bleacher Report and Hoops Hype, he's interested in joining the 76ers. Says that he likes Brett Brown, Embiid, Simmons, and has ties with Fultz (University of Washington alums) and of course, JJ Reddick, in whom they were teammates when they played for the Clippers. Now, according to Hoops Hype, Crawford didn't like playing 20 minutes a game in Minnesota. DUH!!! What does he expect to play, minutes wise, if he were to play for the 76ers, or the Spurs, let's say, or let alone, for any other team. Come on, the dude is like 37 years old, and he wants to play like 3 more years, lol! Yeah, he gives you instant offense, and can create his own shots, and plays off the dribble, but that's it. All I can say about him is... MEH. .. But I didn't see any rumors of mutual interest of SAS, and Crawford, other than what the pundits feel what would be his best fit. But, if he were to sign with the Spurs, I won't be surprised, but a bit disappointed though. We'll see. .. GSG!!!

I was thinking more about how much they could take back in trade and not hit the limitations that kick in with the tax. Last week I played around on the trade machine and a damn Mills for Terrence Ross trade wouldn't work because it slipped them in the tax just enough to have to abide by the 125%. Trade Machine isn't always accurate for current salary, so it could have easily just been a machine error.

I hope that wasn't a direct trade, because Patty makes more than Ross. Anyway, if Cunningham is a min deal, then the Spurs have the room to sign a rookie-min guy and still use the LLE. They aren't that close to the tax.

That would be close, but I don't think PATFO would have any interest in that trade, and I'm almost completely sure Brooklyn wouldn't either. If for some reason there was enough interest in moving Mills for a player making that much, it'd likely be later in the year enough to include Forbes or other off-setting salary to make it work anyway. Anything happening right now would need to involve Gasol.

Patty, LMA, Pau and Ferrari (?) are HEB vets. Dijon and DeMar would be obvious additions... But Patty and Dijon are the only guys with enough "stage presence" to be major guys in those commercials. HEB may have to adjust its pattern.

Which young player benefits the most from Manu retiring? White? Walker? Forbes? Davis?
I'd say White. I think the plan for Walker still is to be full time in Austin but Manu's retirement opens a small door for him to earn a rotation spot during training camp. Forbes will fight with both of them too for the 4th and 5th guard spot behind DeRozan, Murray, Mills. Brynn should be a good sparring partner for White and Walker (to me that's the only reason that justifies his presence in the roster).
Pondexter will try to make the team and if he finally does, he would be competing for SF minutes with Belinelli, Cunningham, Bertans?
Aldridge, Gay, Gasol, Poetl, Bertans, Cunningham will take the minutes at the 4 and 5 positions.
The roster is not perfect or ideal, for sure, but is well balanced and blends inside/outside game, expertise/youth, etc. Its flexibility offers multiple on-court combinations to Popovich, as there are a good number of players able of playing different positions. Another way of structuring the team :
Guards: Murray, DeRozan, Mills, White, Forbes, Walker
Wings-forwards: Belinelli, Gay, Bertans, Cunningham, Pondexter
Bigs: Aldridge, Poetl, Gasol
Add the 2-way contracts and maybe leave a free spot to operate in February depending on team needs. The trade deadline scenario looks good for the Spurs this season.

I think nobody on Earth expected that progression. The franchise has been developing young players successfully for years, getting the best of them on their seasons in San Antonio. Every player is different and many factors have an impact on this process. Lonnie Walker seems to be a talented player which gives him the potential to become a good player. Let's see how he starts the journey before discussing how high can he reach. In the meantime, we can trust the kid and be optimistic.

I guess it's hard to say, further than Aldridge, Gay, DeRozan. I'd say Mills can close some games if his defensive matchup is not a problem for the team. Murray should be solid enough for Pop to trust him. You can imagine Belinelli taking a needed 3pt after a timeout... Maybe Bertans becomes that versatile forward the team needs? Will one of the veterans or even one of the youngsters have a chance? I have no idea tbh.

Leonard came into the league a plus defender and rebounder for his position. He learnt to spot up shoot during the lockout. After that, all his moves and footwork etc etc, came from hours of practice. The spurs staff taught him bit by bit, then one season after next they let him use those moves. It all just came together. But his strength and defensive instincts cannot really be taught. It's something you have. The rest was hard work and luck.

Awesome. Thanks to TD21 I found out that Cunningham was signed with the LLE rather than the MLE. That left open the chance to offer long-term deals to a number of players. Love that they seem to have done it with Metu. Hope they do it with a couple more.

Tony still has plenty of gas in the tank. Many people discounted him last year but remember he came back early from a horrible injury, he was not 100% last year. He should be closer to his old self this year.
These injuries are devastating and take a while to recover from. Just because they are cleared to play does not mean they are 100%. Just look at Rudy gay he said he wasn't feeling 100% until this summer. I expect Rudy to show his prime form this year too.

Mills played like garbage last year with his no assists and no defense games. You can't justify his play last year.
But he has a lot to prove this year- not just solely whether he is worth the money, but also that he's worth the playing time. He might be facing the biggest pressure out of anybody this year because his job is by no means guaranteed going into next year. We have Dejounte, White, Demar, and Lonnie (sprinkle in some Forbes as well) all vying for minutes next year, so he needs to show out in an incredible way this year. In many ways, this is a contract year for Patty (without it literally being a contract year).

That is McRoberts and Huertis on the left beside DeJounte. He is either working out with the team to try and make a comeback or was invited by someone in the organization. He definitely was someone I covered for a while, but that ship has sailed with all his recent knee injuries/issues.

Seems like Huestis, Henderson & McRoberts will be in training camp competing with Pondexter for one of the last roster spots. I'd prefer either Henderson or Huestis, TBH, but neither is ideal for what the team needs.

It looks like the race for the 15th spot will be an interesting one for sure! Roll the dice on JH and McBob, and see what happens. From what I've read on JH, his defense is pretty good, and has been compared to former teammate, Andre Roberson, but with a slight edge with his offense and better growth potential. According to Gidion Lim from Fansided's Thunderous lntentions, he said that Huestis is bigger than Roberson and has a big wingspan, and is surprisingly quick on his feet for his size, and can possibly guard 1-4 positions, for the 6ft 7in, 230lb'er. And of course, there leaves the 2 2-way spots to be filled as well. But it's good to see these guys working out together to build chemistry before the preseason begins. But it's also funny and good to know that RG22 has played with Beli (Sactown), and DDR10 (Rapts), while Cunningham and QP played together when they were with NOP. Hmmm... PATFO's mastermind plan? Hmmm..

I've always liked McRoberts. He seems to be done physically, but his skill-set would be so freaking valuable for the team is he is able to get back to his Charlotte form. I'm not even sure that it's him in the photo, but I'd totally understand if it were.
It is.
Josh Huestis and Gerald Henderson have also been working out with the Spurs. All three are long shots.

I personally like the spurs looking at pondexter, Henderson, and Huestis. It’s gonna be hard to find a guy to come here on the cheap that can fill that 3 and D spot. Maybe they have some other guy up their sleeve that hasn’t been talked about but its going to be an important spot to fill on the roster even if it is the 15th roster spot on the team.

Probably trade or let go Forbes and Gasol go and will bring in Nikola as far as two draft picks they might combine and move up. If they keep both I see them drafting one foreign player "draft and stash" and keeping the other one but will see.
A lot will depend on how Bertans and Forbes play as both are on cheap contracts and could be moved or let go.

I also like the fact we are connecting with these "name" guys...Henderson (athletic back court defense and scoring), Huestis (perimeter defense and rebounding), Mc Roberts (scoring and rebounding) and Pondexter (perimeter defense and scoring) are all skilled...possible for all three a training camp invite.
One month has still to pass before the first rs game, and they are already playing with the team for some time... still possible to evaluate definitely if they can fit and what they have in the tank (for the old ones or the ones coming from injuries). The healtier and younger of the four is Huestis, no doubts about it, and he also fills a role we need really...that's why he was my favourite sf signing...

Henderson is the best player, overall. Huestis fits a lot of the need, but in truth may not see anymore time than he did in OKC. Pop just does not have the patience for this kid to develop a shot even if he is primarily playing for defense. McRoberts makes sense if you want to give some minutes to Bertans at SF. Pondexter? Don't see a good fit.
Of note on Huestis defense over a series of games that he started. The 11 players he was most matched up with were Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes, C.J. McCollum, T.J. Warren, Devin Booker, Trevor Ariza, Buddy Hield, Kevin Durant, Andrew Wiggins, Jimmy Butler and Lou Williams. Huestis guarded those 11 players on a combined 440 possessions, during which they made 50 of 113 shots (44.2 percent). He is a great shot blocker and Thunder outscored foes by 10.7 points per 48 minutes when he played along side their starters, when he was on the floor. His shooting including foul shooting is abysmal. He could only play with shooters on the floor as offensively it would be 4 on 5.

Rumors around Heat moving on Goran Dragic. Phoenix and Kokoskov want a PG, I bet they are interested. Kokoskov and Dragic won European Championship last summer.
The Suns have been a joke lately but they have Booker, Ayton and are investing some money in short veteran contracts. Now looking for a decent PG. Igor Kokoskov is a good coach. Looks like finally, they're doing the correct things. The first step is to reestablish a professional work atmosphere: Design a consistent plan (GM-Coaching-Roster), order the locker room mixing youth-experience-leadership, empower your coaches and build up from there. They will be better this season.

What's the plan for next offseason then? Don't re-sign either of Cunningham/Pondexter to make room for both first round picks? Move Forbes so that we can bring in Blossomgame if he develops a 3?
-Waive Gasol (or stretch and waive him- the difference being a one time $6.7 million dollar hit or $2.3 million over the next three seasons)
-Don't re-sign Cunningham and whomever the 15th man ends up being- unless it's Carrol.
-Bring over Milutinov.
-Draft and sign one of our first rounders and stash the other. A SF is an obvious priority unless there but I'm not sure what possibly two picks in the 21-26 range gets them.
-I still don't know what Blossomgame is; his game seems to be much closer to an NBA 4 but is only 6'7 with a 6'10 wingspan. He doesn't really shoot 3's either, it's a weird roster fit but he still may be on next years team as a cheap prospect.
G-F-Murray, Mills, White, Forbes, DDR, Gay, Walker, 1st rounder, Blossomgame, Belinelli
PF-C-LMA, Milutinov, Metu, Bertans, Poeltl
There would be no open roster spots open in that scenario.
I don't much roster change other than essentially swapping Gasol out for Milutinov, adding a 1st rounder, etc.

With Poetl in the mix the Spurs could package Nikola's rights with either or both draft picks. Which could net them a 8 - 14 lottery pick + a young prospect. Or they could use either or both picks, Nikola's rights to salary dump Pau's remaining contract.
As long as the front office continues to bring in quality, young prospects (I don't care as much about the back of the bench), find a quality SF (in the draft or FA) and loses either Pau or Patty, then I'm more than happy.

They're probably only going to free up one rotation spot, Gasol's. That should go to Walker (Aldridge would play more C and Gay or if he's replaced with someone like Aminu, PF).
Walker's too good a prospect and they're too limited ceiling of a team to block him with a middling, aging type, like Ariza or Carroll, who won't move the needle.
Hopefully they can package their picks, move up and find a possible long term answer at SF in the draft. That player could spend '19-'20 apprenticing mostly in the G-League before hopefully claiming Belinelli's rotation spot by '20-'21.
Other than that, probably sign Milutinov and Blossomgame and not re-sign Cunningham and whoever the 15th man ends up being (for now, Pondexter).

Depending on where the Spurs pick falls, they might be able to package both to move into the late lottery. Mid lottery + a young prospect is out of the question though. Milutinov is probably an NBA caliber player, but is value is likely next to nothing.
Nogueria, a more athletic, proven version, remains unsigned because the league is overloaded at C. Some of that is due to fringe players eating up roster spots with dead money (Plumlee, Asik, Felicio, Noah, Mozgov, Leonard, Koufos, Mahinmi). Still, even as those contracts start to come off the books, it's more likely those spots go to wings, with hybrid bigs being converted into full time C's.

LMA's extension begins this season and ends in 2021 (35 years old) We have to see if he ages "gracefully" in these next three seasons. But if Gasol got a 48M contract at his 38 years old from the Spurs, LMA too.
DeMar is a different story. he will still be in his prime in two years. His last year is about $28M. If the Spurs are willing to pay something like 140M/ 4 years for DD, there is a big chance he remains a Spur.

After last year's performance by Aldridge, no doubt his contract turns into a good deal.
Big question mark is whether DeRozan can fit in and play around Aldridge and make his teammates better. Most importantly they have to contend in the stacked Western conference at the same time. I think if DeRozan takes a team first approach we will compete but if he tries to be ball dominant without adding more playmaking (assists) then we will fight for lower half seeding in the playoffs.
I'm not sure DeRozan has a big market for anything over $30 MM anyways, but who knows for sure. I definitely don't think he gets it from a contender.
I would think around $20-$25MM is Derozan's and Spurs' sweet spot for his next contract. He will probably take his 3rd year player option at $27.5MM. After the 3rd year he isn't really in his prime unless you consider 32-35 his prime years.

I haven't paid any attention to Huestis. Just followed some of the discussion in this forum. Seems the big knock on him is lack of offense. I suspect that we have signed the guys that we will start the season with - except two-way guys. I don't expect any movement (if at all) until the cut deadline. With the unprecedented turnover, Pop will be even more patient than normal with the guys on the roster, trying to meld them into a team.

I think if the Spurs want to go in the direction of the "youth movement," then Huestis may be the way to go at the 3. Blossomgame is another option, too, but he may require more development time. But with Huestis, you have a NBA experienced player, & his defense is compared to his former teamate, Andre Roberson, a very good defender in his own right, except Huestis has offensive upside and potential, which is something he would have to work on (with Chip), & Pop to be patient with, but when the preseason smoke clears, we shall see what the outcome will be.
