Maybe Mills to Philly now for a wing?

TD 21
11-18-2020, 05:38 PM
Green and to a lesser extent Ferguson might lend more credence to Mills for Richardson, though that seemed too good to be true to begin with.

If the Warriors are supposedly high on Vassell, it should stand to reason they'd want a prime version.

People underestimate this. I totally understand OKC trying to move up in the draft. They have to trade away some of those picks in self-defense. I'm down for SA being the team that gets like Oubre 25 and two future firsts to move down so long as those firsts are real and convey before 2023

I think Green got the second and Philly saw the 25 first as a cheap price to get out of basically two years of Horford's money.

Get away from the abomination that was horford contract. Now they have 2 expiring deals in Richardson and green. Gives them some breathing room going forward, but they still have Tobias and his horrid contract to deal with now.

It has nothing to do with Danny Green the player. His expiring contract is the ballast , so that Philly can get rid of Horford's terrible contract for the price of a couple of late picks.

Why would the 76ers, who have a non range shooting primary creator and the most dominant low post scorer in the league, want to pair them with another non range shooting primary creator?

All you need to know about DeRozan's value or lack thereof, is the Hawks would prefer a gimpy Hayward, who can no longer handle a star's workload, over him (rightfully so).

Depends on what year(s) the picks are. If its a late pick in next year's draft it'll be worth a lottery pick in most other drafts, and the second would be worth a late first as well.

The news about Klay Thompson having a leg injury and undergoing tests probably torpedoes any dream of moving up to get Wiseman with LMA.

How could GS go for the solid vet at his age when Klay's situation is up in the air.

I wouldn't get too excited about Wright saying the team wasn't done with the roster. I think he's referring to re-signing guys more than adding free agents. I guess, though, that the team could be looking to do the trade-and-sign that worked out so well for them last year where they agree to an MLE guy before dealing guys to make room. Doesn't seem feasible with their salary situation. I think the roster as we can project it now will be the roster going forward, with the only exceptions being some camp competition for Eubanks and Weatherspoon and maybe a new two-way player.

11-19-2020, 09:11 AM
Marco won't be back and Forbes shouldn't be...that's 2 spots right there

I think that's the plan. Marco and Forbes barely played in the bubble iirc. Marco already publicized his wish to play for a contender - in other words to leave San Antonio - and I really do not see Forbes staying. Might be a reach, but if he was a part of the future, he would have been featured on some of the fiesta and draft content.

The same mechanism that blessed us with the wonders of Bryn Forbes starting nearly everya game the last season should woth in favor of Murray, White, Walker and Johnson now, as the freed up minutes will probably split up between them.

I agree that the bubble was a glorified preseason with a few competitive games mixed in. Still, the guard corps showed out in those games, so they should get a chance to gel more and hopefully continue their improvement. A multi-guard lineup, especially one where everyone can handle and (is willing to) move the ball and shoot the three at least decent on high volume (evidence at least hints towards that being the case), should be the way to go.

Of course, some questions still remain. Murray's ballhandling and shooting as well as Derozan's shooting remain suspect. I do think Derozan has kind of seen the light on what kind of player he needs to be in order to be successful on his terms - embracing ball movement and using his isolation skills selectively. Hopefully, he will act accordingly.

Three question marks remain on the roster: Gay, Mills and Aldridge.

I do not see Gay fit with the new direction of the team at all. Maybe as a microball five or an iso sixth man, but the current Spurs team is simply not a group where his talents can be maximized.

If Aldridge continues to shoot threes at a semi-high volume, he should still fit into the offense. Defensively, he is still very servicable. I also think he's a good vet teamate to have around. I just wonder whether his body can play with the high pace unit the Spurs (hopefully) envision.

Mills should fit in stylistically and looks to be an all-time great teammate, a veteran presence highly needed on a rebuilding team. It's just that his minutes need to be reduced in favor of the young guards.
On the other hand, if anyone on that current Spurs team would accept a change of role from major contributor to microwave and mentor, it should be Patty.

DeRozan opting out was a sign that they believe demand is weak. If he could have gotten more, he would have. I think he would have taken an offer equal to his opt in price, if he could have gotten 3 years.

Right now the Spurs have a sign posted, "Player for sale... just take up payments." Letting him walk at the end of the year for nothing would be better than giving up value to get rid of him now. Doesn't mean that the Spurs won't do it.

I believe Beli already said he was leaving IIRC.

Considering the breakout of KJ and Q and adding two more guards in the draft, bringing Forbes back simply would make zero sense. But then again...the Spurs and their loyalty sometimes doesn't make sense.

Murray, DeMar, White, Walker, Mills, Johnson, Weathersoon, now Vassel and Jones...frankly, that's too many guards as it is without including Forbes.

Who are the realistic trade partners for LMA and Derozan? SA will most likely try to send them to a playoff team in a big market or to a place that the player wants to go. So do we just send them back to Portland and Toronto? Or do they go to LA, GS, MIA? Or do they just stay here? Feels like a move is addition by subtraction long term. More time for the young guys to develop, find a new identity as a team, another lottery pick next year, etc.

I really hope that if they aren’t making moves to benefit their future that they at least stick to the cap space plan. Don’t sign mediocre vets to any deals longer than 1 year. Do what you can to improve for this season but unless it’s a longish term player don’t put money on the books for no reason and low margin upgrades.

If your trading for one that has a longer deal and get a pick for it? Fine. But don’t just sign some aging vet like Rudy beyond 1 season. And for the love of God no more dead money years. That strategy sucks and has done nothing for SA

Spurs should sign Derrick Jones Jr. - Wish they had the $ to sign Jerami Grant.

If they are keeping Aldridge, they need to go small/athletic and start LMA at the 5. This means Poeltl prob wants to leave and wont be happy, but starting DeRozan/Aldridge/Poeltl is a nightmare for our young guys who need to get out and run and are challenged at playing in the half court at times.

White - Murray - Q/Jones
DeRozan - Mills - Vassell
Johnson - Walker
Jones Jr. - Gay - Lyles
Aldridge - Free Agent (Giles?) - Eubanks

Prob what I would start. Obviously I'd rather just move one or both of LMA/DDR.

Can we reset the convo post draft? Given the givens, where are the offers coming from for LMA and DDR?

And, are Gay and Mills more attractive pieces for a win team now like the Bucks, Philly, or Heat?

Yes on the reset. And yes on Gay and Mills.

For DeMar and Aldridge I think Spurs need to think in terms of trading those guys into space (which obviously limits partners) or as part of a three team deal that sees Spurs taking back bad salary. Or take back a bloated two year (second year non-guaranteed) sign and trade. I.e. sign and trade for Whiteside at 17M a season for Aldridge, or some such.

If the trade offers are no good, the best option might be to let DeMar and LaMarcus expire.

Question: is there a free agent Spurs could target by combining Gay and Mills' salaries in a sign and trade? Would have to be a contender or a team desperate to qualify for playoffs.

Agree. Everything that’s been said on the matter has been said and it was relevant during the draft and trade moratorium as far as discussing strategy and direction.

But FA is here and what can Sa do and what do people think they should do?

This possibility will keep the Wiggins to San Antonio for Aldridge conversation open.

The problem is that Golden State will have to give up all their assets to Houston for Harden, including Wiseman. Thompson, Wiseman, Minny's '21 lottery pick, three additional firsts for Harden.

I don't think that GSW trades to replace Thompson. Wiggins can be the starting two guard. I don't think they would trade for Harden, especially because he doesn't fit with what they do and he wants to go to NJ. And how many firsts is Harden worth anyway? He's shown he can't win in the big-time. How good is he when the ball is in Curry's hands?

To the people freaking out about not filling the need of center in the draft, this is why you don’t draft centers. There is plenty of supply and prices have come way down. See Kanter taking a $5mm player option.

It’s also why they shouldn’t have prioritized Poeltl in the trade for #2, but that’s a sunk cost.

I just dont see the value in adding any long term contracts right now unless it’s someone on a rookie deal (ie a Cam Reddish type). Why try to get the 8th seed in a year when playoff gate revenue isn’t going to be what it normally is? Better to position selves for 2021 draft and rebuild.

Wright needs to take note of what fellow small market teams in NO and OKC are doing.

For this year, only if they can get a team with cap space to send back less salary in a trade. For future years yes, if they get back an expiring contract.

iirc Wiseman now counts around $9M in a trade, while it was zero before he was picked. Or is that only when he signs his contract?

I really thought GS would just let the trade exception expire, especially with Thompson down. They might be going all in instead.

Any team can trade for both guys even if over the cap, so long as they take back no more than 125% of salary plus $100k. So Warriors could cut payroll in trade to over the cap team like the Spurs.

Also, Wiseman would be traded BEFORE being signed because otherwise he can’t be traded for 30 (?) days. I don’t remember how his pending salary would count but I think it would be easier to trade out before he signs.

Issue for Spurs would be bumping into the tax on some of these trades.

What I'd like to see would be a lineup like this (assuming Mills, Lyles and a first is the package)

White, Murray, Jones
Vassell, Walker, Weatherspoon
DeRozan, Johnson,
Gallinari, Gay, Samanic
Aldridge, Poeltl, Eubanks

With the team using whatever money they have left to let a bunch of 6-8 wings battle it out for the final roster spot, with the runner up getting a two-way along with another young center.

The most they could do with the mid-level is start at 9.258. That would get them to about 130-132 if they keep Pasecniks or sign Winston to a full deal.

Then they would be hard-capped at 138.928

Then Bertans still wants a raise over his caphold of 14.

The draft did a number on some of the teams who could have been bidding for him.

Philly getting Curry = Why bother with Forbes?
Memphis getting Bane = Why bother with Forbes?

MAYBE Golden State could be dumb enough to imagine that Forbes could step in for Klay. I doubt it. But it's funny seeing Warriors fans hype him up and say he can shoot and defend.

I've seen some speculation that Detroit could be interested, but they weren't interested in keeping Kennard who's just a bigger better Forbes.

There might not be any takers for Forbes which leads him straight back to the Spurs so Pop can cry tears of joy.

I have them at 122,679,312 assuming Metu is cut, Mills and Gay hit their bonuses (which may have already been accounted for?), and counting Vassell and Eubanks but not including Weatherspoon or Tre Jones.

And that's without the qualifying offer for Poeltl

They wouldn't be in this mess if they had only stretched DeMarre Carroll's garbage, but that had to be done in the first 24 hours after he cleared waivers.

Not maybe. They didn't have space to keep Gallo's hold even before the Porier dump they agreed to today. They needed to move him for no very little or no money going back.

It might work out like that, but then the same principle applies with the TE's they'd be using.

They did not have to trade Oubre into space to complete their deals

Did someone tell you that? I haven't been running calculations on it, but I do know that it was an open mystery how they were even going to complete their deals from yesterday. It sounds an awful lot like they did have to use cap space or a TE to make the numbers work, and that does require trading him into space.

What's going one is that Oubre isn't very good. He had a good year last year, but for the most part he's a glass cannon.

Nope. But Albert Nahmad who I follow on Twitter was speaking about all these scenarios and Okc taking salary back possibly and staying over cap scenarios (meaning purposely taking salary back) as a path.

I inferred it from that. He’s the best cap person I know

OKC staying over the cap only helps if the Paul trade isn't already done. As far as I heard, it was done the day it was announced, officially and completely. If that's true, then OKC was either under the cap and thus had to use cap space to acquire players, or they were still over that cap and would need to use TEs to do it. If the Paul trade were pending, then yeah, they could wrap everything together enough to fit in Porier. But again, that wasn't how it was reported.

I don't think OKC needed to take salary back to stay over. Gallo's cap hold is substantial.

Nah. They acquired Horford and Johnson. That's $43 Million. Adams pushes it up to $70 Million. Then Gallo pushes it up to $104. Just adding SGA and Bazley gets them over the cap at that point.

Yeah. That's what I thought. GS did have to trade Oubre into cap space because they would runt out of space otherwise. They basically could've used to savings from the Paul deal to fill in the salary difference between Green and Horford. Instead, they basically agreed to take Horford into cap space. And they can't use the Oubre deal to fill in because they can't combine him (or Green) in a deal if they're over the cap.

I might have to actually try looking at the cap situation it's still weird, even with this bit more info.

With Ilyasova waived, they don't have the matching salary to make it work financially. They're also low on picks and DiVincenzo doesn't make sense for the Spurs, so they'd have to find a third team for multiple reasons.

They could sign and trade Robin Lopez 3 years/39M (13M per) with only the first year guaranteed. It matched Mills salary, SA can let Poeltl walk and preserve cap space and have their one year replacement for Poeltl as well. Then waive Robin next season.

Robin agrees because he was making 5M so he gets a big one year deal and he gets right back into FA next year with more money.

Boom. Done.

I hope they don't have to offer one. They really need to care about their cap space next off-season. Right now, White's hold is projected to be under $11 Million next summer. Any bit he gets in the first year over that eats into that cap space. Worst case, it's money the team could use to pick up salary for picks. Best, it's what they'd need to sign a max free agent. If they get a really good deal, then they probably will be able to take shaving off a couple of million bucks. But anything substantial needs to wait until next summer -- for multiple reasons.

What does this accomplish? Is Lopez better than Poeltl? Not even close. Poeltl could be resigned and traded before the deadline (there is some period of time he can’t be dealt) if the Spurs aren’t making a push. And this gives you nothing back for Mills other than potentially some flexibility next summer.

I’d rather just use part of the MLE for a center than give up an asset for RLo.

Or you could give Poeltl and outsized one year deal as long as you find a way to stay under the tax, which would happen if you can move Mills / Gay and not bring back as much salary. Issue is there are so few teams that have contracts in the $8-$10 million range.

An underrated potential deal could be G and DeRozan for Harris (and hopefully some compensation). With Green and Curry on the roster, the Sixers no longer have spacing issues, and with Harris gone, they'd actually be in good cap space again. I don't love it for the Spurs, but on paper, getting Harris would make the fit better with the young players.

Murray, Mills, Jones
Walker, White, Weatherspoon
Vassell, Johnson, FA
Harris, Scott, Samanic
Aldridge, Poeltl, Eubanks

I think the plan now is for Mills to be traded. It just seems like the sides were heading in opposite directions with Patty sitting out during the bubble and the Jones pick. But if this trade happens, Mills' role is maintained so that Jones has a year to be groomed. DeRozan and Gay get to play for contenders. Morey somehow clears the Sixers from cap hell while not losing much on the court. The only really shaky party would be the Spurs, who should be wary of giving up that kind of cap space for a non-star. It'd almost necessitate choosing between Murray and White long-term. I do think the Spurs make the playoffs with this unit and could be a playoff team for a couple years even, so it's worth considering, but money would be a concern for the next four years.

EDIT: To be more exact, the deal would probably include Lyles and Scott to make the numbers work for Philly. I've updated the depth chart to reflect that.

I really hope we don't do that... I'd rather rather make a play for Hayward (S&T) or Paul George than absorb Harris for an asset... Hayward or PG I think we can move next summer if need be...I'm not sure Harris is movable..

I don't know if he will or won't. I do think people might be overlooking how high of a pick Vassell is and how SA apparently liked him despite picking that high. I think there's a chance that Vassell is going to only guy penciled into the starting lineup.

High draft pick or not, you play the best players.

I guess Keldon still has to earn people's respect around here. He would have been a top 10 draft pick in this draft, knowing what we know (most competitive player, scores efficiently, extreme work ethic easily seen by the improvement to his body)
