seems like by all accounts the entire peat family is pretty tight, and not only would he play with his brother at NU, but the family could all go out to see games and see both play. i've always felt all along it was uphill battle all along with nebraska due to this. hopefully a strong close to the season and a official visit will at least get us in the running.

UT needs to get him and his family back on campus to have a shot. I've never been able to put the Horns ahead of Nebraska because of his brother being there. I'm not convinced that UT is out of the running or anything like that, but the rumors on Peat this week could be a reason why the staff is scrambling for OLs right now. I hope I'm wrong and it's just Searels being extra thorough with his evaluations.

QB Gunner Kiel of Columbus, IN is opening up his recruitment. He hasn't officially decommitted from Indiana yet, but he's unofficially visiting Notre Dame this weekend for the USC game. It will be interesting to see if OU will still pursue him considering they took QB Trevor Knight once he went off the market.

More interesting news on QB evaluations...both Bryan Harsin and Stacy Searels went by Tatum this morning to see QB/ATH Jalen Overstreet. Harsin will also be at the beginning of Overstreet's game this evening before driving to Carthage. UT has supposedly been in touch with Overstreet for the past two weeks and they are recruiting him at QB exclusively. His coach believes UT's interest is pretty serious.

Very interesting. Some smart analysts have projected Overstreet as a OLB at the next level.

**Bo Davis visited Elysian Fields earlier this week to see 2013 DT Isaiah Golden. The staff is attempting to get him to Austin for the Kansas game next weekend and there is talk that he'll be assured an offer in February. Texas A&M has yet to offer.

**Harsin and Searels also visited Henderson this morning to see QB Del Barnes.

Stacy Searels also made the Dallas Jesuit/Lake Highlands game last night in Richardson. 2013 OL Kent Perkins was "very happy" that he was able to come by. Perkins is a first Junior Day offer and a must get for the next recruiting cycle.

I can't believe what I'm seeing. Texas offered a freakin' JUCO. This gives me hope that Bo Davis will eventually offer DE Denico Autry. We need a speed rush DE in the worst way.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Offensive tackle Donald Hawkins (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/140963/donald-hawkins) (Senatona, MS./Northwest Mississippi JC) told HornsNation he received an offer from the Longhorns earlier today.

Hawkins, who is committed to Oklahoma State, got a visit from Texas offensive line coach Stacy Searels this weekend, which is when the offer took place.

Hawkins, 6-foot-4, 320-pounds, also has offers from Florida, Georgia, South Florida, Kansas State, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Southern Miss.

He committed to the Cowboys on Aug. 4.

i think it's more a change in philosophy, as i expect we'll also offer denico autry if we haven't already.

i'm also afraid it may be indication of pessimism on other OL recruits on the target board.

Greg Brantley's early senior film is filthy. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gnii59j0IJE . The guys at 247 have gone from "body shaping" concerns on Brantley to "he's a future NFL player." I'm not going to say he's better or a more important recruit than Peat, but Brantley can sure as hell help Texas right away.

This the only film I could find out Donald Hawkins: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRJfvXDiAR0 . The video quality is pretty poor, we'll just have to trust Wickline's evaluation. The guy knows what he's doing. Coach Searels was a great hire for Texas, but there's a reason why Wickline got serious consideration.

Honestly, I think Texas should probably take both Brantley and Hawkins if they can get them. Hawkins would almost certainly be a starter immediately, and Brantley would definitely be in the mix.

I also like Tre'von Armstead, multiple eye witnesses have placed Major at Armstead's game on Friday. Armstead has left tackle written all over him, but I think he's a few years away. He's a little raw right now, while Brantley and Hawkins seem ready to go.

Texas should stay on Peat, but they also need to cover their asses. We need quality bodies at OL right now. If Hawkins can qualify, get him in spring ball and enjoy a book end OT for 2 years. His comments about Texas and their interest in him have been overwhelming positive.

**Good news. OL/DL Arik Armstead supposedly told a Rivals reporter this weekend that he'll be visiting Austin next month. I imagine he'll be on campus for Texas Tech (Nov. 5th) or Kansas State (Nov. 19th) if it all works out.

**Bo Davis was in Lufkin this weekend to see DT Tomme Mark. UT requested film on him recently and he's considered a contingency plan at this point.

2013 WR Jacorey Warrick of Cypress Falls has picked up an offer from Utah. I think he's one of a handful of kids that are all Texas with an offer. Despite playing WR in high school, the staff had him work a little DB at one of the June summer camps. Not quite sure what position he'll be recruited for, but I think UT gives him a solid look. His father (think it might actually be his stepfather) played in the UT band.

"If they pick up the recruiting they would fit right in because my dad went to UT so I'm kind of biased to them a little bit," he said. "But I'm keeping my options open."

More on this...despite Stacy Searels being the one to call and offer Armstead last week, UT is recruiting him for the defensive line. In addition to that, one of UT's assistant coaches for basketball, Russell Springmann, called Armstead shortly after Searels did to talk about playing for the team. Last week this seemed like a recruitment that wouldn't go very far, but it's apparent that UT is taking this pretty seriously. Armstead's father is currently saying that UT will "definitely get a visit."

Monday morning notes from Hook 'Em 24/7...

**Most exciting news is Texas may have found their safety for the 2012 class. ATH Adrian Colbert of Mineral Wells, who committed to Baylor last week and is considered a "soft verbal", may get a UT offer pretty quickly. He attended TCU's game this past Saturday and Texas A&M is also hot on his trail. He's the current 3A 400M champion and he will run right through you on the football field. No word yet on what his interest in UT may be, but his stock is rising quickly. See his film below:

**Speaking of safeties, Duane Akina was in Louisiana this weekend attending the game of DB Landon Collins. Nothing new to report there but Collins is still expected to make an official visit to UT.

**In addition to 2013 WR Jake Oliver, Darrell Wyatt went to Forth Worth to see the game of 2013 OL/DL A'Shawn Robinson. He also got a chance to see 2013 ATH Robbie Rhodes of Forth Worth Southwest.

**DE Mario Edwards of Denton Ryan did not make his official visit to Baton Rouge this weekend as he had previously planned. He decided to take his ACT instead but is expected to re-schedule and still take an official visit to LSU.

**To give you an idea of 2013 OL Kent Perkins' feelings on UT, here is another quote from him when he knew Stacy Searels was at his game:

"When I saw he was here, I told myself that I had to make this my best pregame ever,” Perkins said. “I felt like I did. I was hyped. I really wanted to show him that I'm the type of player who can play at a school like Texas.”

“I want to stay in Texas,” Perkins said. “So my focus is going to be on schools in the state.”

Some more quotes from OL Donald Hawkins after receiving his UT offer:

"Coach Searels is a friend of one my coaches. They both coached at Georgia together. The conversation came up that they needed a tackle, and he had called coach Fabris," Hawkins said. "He had some film and coach Searels liked what he saw."

"(Searels) relayed a message, asked if I would be interested in Texas. He got my number, we ended up talking. He wanted to come to my game, get some face action and asked if I would be interested. I didn't know much about Texas other than Texas doesn't offer many Juco players. So when they offered me that was a shock."

"I kind of knew they might offer me. If he wasn't interested, he wouldn't come from Austin, Texas to scout me at the game," Hawkins said. "Every time I came off the field, I was holding up my fingers for how many pancakes I had and he'd smile.

"After the game, he called my o-line coach and told me to call him. My coach told me I got the offer and when I talked to him that he officially offered me. He told me the head coach, Mack Brown, okayed it."

"I'm thinking Texas (for an official visit) and the other one, I'm kind of deciding between Georgia and Florida," Hawkins said. "I need to talk to the coaches. I want to go in and play early so I need to see who really needs me."

“Coach Akina and I have been talking for a while,” Collins said Monday night. “He told me he would be coming down and he did, so it was cool. We talked a little and then he headed back home.”

“They have a shot at me because they have everything I’m looking for. Texas has put a lot of players in the NFL and they are a very good university in broadcasting,” he said.

“My first one (official visit) is to Alabama November 5 for the LSU-Alabama game. I’ll also take visits to Texas, LSU, Florida and Tennessee probably,” he said.

“I had a real good time,” Armstead said. “I fit in really well there, and I think Notre Dame is definitely a school I can see myself at. I had some questions coming in and they were all answered. I got to know the coaching staff better and that was important, and I loved the game day atmosphere. It was electric in there and when all the recruits walked in to the stadium, the fans started going crazy and everyone knew who we were.

“Everyone was waving towels and was really in to the game. Coach [Brian] Kelly said one of the things he wanted to do was get the fans louder and more involved, and I think that was definitely the case. I watched the defensive line closely and they run both a 4-3 and a 3-4. They have some good young lineman but they’re not afraid to play freshman and I think I would have a good shot to come in and play right away and that’s important.”

Apparently Mario Edwards has strong interest in LSU now. No mention of Texas.

http://espn.go.com/dallas/story/_/id/7148974/mario-edwards-no-1-overall-prospect-receives-armour-jersey

Edwards said that while he is still committed to the Seminoles, Oklahoma and LSU have caught his attention as possible college homes.

Edwards said the defenses of Oklahoma and LSU made him want to explore other options. Before last week, LSU and Oklahoma had the No. 1 and No. 3 defenses, respectively, in the country. The Sooners lost to Texas Tech this past weekend, but Edwards still saw the positive in the team.

"The really impressive thing with OU was that they didn't give up," he said. "They almost came back after being down by a lot. That really impressed me."

Some good news...

**The UT track coach called DB Adrian Colbert earlier this evening to check in. Here are some quotes on the situation:

"I got a call from the Texas track Coach (Mario) Santenga. He said he was going to be talking to Coach (Duane) Akina about me," Colbert said.

"They were going to offer until my football status started to rise, so now they may give me a football offer and let me run (track) in the spring." Colbert said.

**Various reports coming out tonight on OL Donald Hawkins. He will be making an official visit to UT but the date isn't set in stone yet. One report says he could make it to Austin as early as this weekend while the other says it will all depend on his team's playoff schedule. It has him visiting on November 5th for Texas Tech or November 19th for Kansas State.

Some Friday morning updates...

**OL/DL Arik Armstead has two specific dates in mind for his official visit to Austin. He'll be in town on November 19th for Kansas State or he'll be present for banquet weekend in December. That will be a time when most of the current 2012 class will also take their official visits. Always a big recruiting weekend. Armstead spoke with Oscar Giles recently and talks were apparently "very positive." UT is not only recruiting him on the DL (he doesn't want to play offense) but they're also doing everything they can to give him a shot at basketball. Armstead took an official to Notre Dame last weekend and will be in Tuscaloosa on November 5th for Alabama/LSU.

**JUCO OL Donald Hawkins and his team were victorious last night so he will not be making an official visit to UT this weekend. The more likely date will be November 19th for him as well. Shaping up to be a HUGE weekend if WR Dorial Green-Beckham also makes it to Austin. Two five-stars (Armstead, Green-Beckham) and arguably the best JUCO OL in the country on campus at the same time.

**Duane Akina will be making a visit to Mineral Wells this evening to see DB Adrian Colbert in action. If his conversation with the UT track coach is any indication, it sounds like Colbert will be eventually receive an offer from the Longhorns.

**Lastly, ATH Daje Johnson has been keeping in close contact with the UT staff and he spoke with Bryan Harsin last night. Just a reminder that he will be attending the Kansas game tomorrow. According to what was reported, Johnson made it sound like the UT staff may wait a few more weeks before throwing out any additional offers.

I do not like the sound of that. What is really killing me is that I think that he has it right. OU has done wonders with their receivers in the past few years and Arkansas is looking great with Petrino.

Here's the article:

Just a day after breaking the national career receiving yards mark, Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest senior Dorial Green-Beckham broke his silence about which schools he is considering amid his intense recruitment.
In an exclusive Friday interview with ESPNHS, Green-Beckham said Arkansas and Oklahoma are two schools he has high interest in, while Texas and Auburn are also contenders for his talents.
“Arkansas and Oklahoma are the two schools that are high up in the running. I definitely plan on visiting those two,” said Green-Beckham, who is ranked No. 3 overall in the ESPNU 150. “But I’m still open to considering other schools, too.”
“Texas and Auburn are also possibilities, but me and my dad have to sit down and talk about those schools. We’ve talked about the negatives and positives and stuff like that, but we’ve still got time to figure out if I want to take visits there as well.”
Texas may have helped its case on Friday. Longhorns coach Mack Brown called Green-Beckham to congratulate him on breaking the record before passing the phone over to wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt for a short conversation.
A report circulated Wednesday that Green-Beckham would visit Texas on Nov. 19 for the Kansas State game and then travel to Auburn on Nov. 26 for the “Iron Bowl” against Alabama. But Green-Beckham reiterated on Friday that no official visits have been set.
Green-Beckham’s father and coach, John Beckham, also told ESPNHS on Thursday that the Texas and Auburn visits will mostly depend on the availability of his son, who also plans to play basketball this winter after Hillcrest’s football playoff run ends.
Green-Beckham said there are other schools he’s willing to consider and visit among the 30-plus BCS schools that have offered him a scholarship, but he said he wasn’t ready to reveal them at this point.
Green-Beckham has taken two unofficial visits in recent weeks. He saw Arkansas face Auburn on Oct. 8 and Missouri when they faced Iowa State on Oct. 15. Missouri has also been long suspected as one of Green-Beckham’s top schools.
With this news and yet another milestone to his name, Green-Beckham’s recruitment is sure to heat up even more.
Following a 303-yard performance in Thursday’s regular-season finale, Green-Beckham now has 6,109 career receiving yards (and counting), making him the first high school player to tally more than 6,000. An 81-yard touchdown in the first half pushed Green-Beckham ahead of Abram Booty (Evangel Christian/Shreveport, La.) on the all-time career receiving yards list.

Colbert has already set up his official visit to UT. He will be coming in for banquet weekend on December 9th and 10th. As we've talked about before, HUGE recruiting weekend. The staff will continue to try and get him to Austin before then by inviting him to campus for the remaining home games, but it doesn't look like he'll make it to town before December unless he decides to pass on some Baylor games he already has scheduled. Here are some more quotes from Colbert:

"They haven't offered yet, but I talked to coach Akina this morning and he said they're going to. It will probably be sometime this week," Colbert said. "I got a chance to talk to coach Mack Brown too and he said they're going to offer me."

"It (a Texas offer) will not really change my decision, but it will make me think more about where I want to go," Colbert said. "I'll have to sit down with the family, talk about that more."

"They were just telling me that I would get the best education there as a student athlete because they would give me all the support and help I needed. And they would would let me run track, they have the most DBs in the NFL right now. They have 10 in the NFL right now," Colbert said. "They said they're the most flexible with track and football, and that kind of gets me because I want to do both."

"It's just the whole city of Austin, the whole school is awesome," Colbert said when asked what stands out about Texas.

He's a stud, shyne. Set the SPARQ combine record for highest overall score this summer at Nike's The Opening in Oregon even though DB Landon Collins won the final round. The staff wants him in that all-purpose role that RB DJ Monroe is playing right now, but Johnson actually thinks his future could be at DB (his pops played DB in the NFL). He'd probably be great on either side of the ball and he's one of a handful of guys that UT is recruiting in order to get more speed and pure athleticism back into the program.

My mistake. Daje Johnson doesn't hold a Texas offer. It sounds like Colbert will get an offer next week. Sounds like further offers might have to wait until after the regular season.

Exactly what the staff told him again last night. I'm honestly not sure what the staff is waiting on, but it's encouraging that Johnson has already said he'll be in Austin for the remaining home games. The kid is just waiting for UT to say the word at this point.

Some quotes from Overstreet about his gameday experience in Austin:

"I talked to every coach before and after the game," Overstreet said. "They offered yesterday. I talked to Mack Brown. It was cool. Me, my dad and my brother were in (Brown's office). He let us know about the offer. He was straight forward with everything. He didn't try to tell us anything that wasn't true, and we really respected that."

"I liked the environment. It was crazy. The facilities are just really, really nice there. I've been before, but first was my first time really going in depth," Overstreet said. "But I sill want to check out every other school that I have on my go-to list. I don't want to jump on the offer just because. I want to look at some other schools to make sure I'm making the right choice."

Surprising to say the least that Overstreet got the offer. If Harsin thinks he can play QB for him, I'm buying. Overstreet would be a good fit to match with Brewer's skill set. Sounds like Jalen will make his official visits and make a decision.

He's definitely not the most polished prospect, but I think the staff likes his athletic ability and thinks he's a candidate for another position should UT finally get some stability at the QB position with Ash or Brewer. I know a lot of people think he'd make a great OLB and could eventually beef up to 230 lbs. or so. The only negative thing I can see with this recruitment is Overstreet possibly doubting that he'll get a fair shake at QB with him being one of two in the 2012 class and everyone knowing Brewer is the priority at the position.

One more thing on DB Adrian Colbert...have to watch out for Oklahoma here. He hasn't been contacted by the Sooners yet, but he has a sister in Norman right now and the family follows the program closely. Colbert said they would get serious consideration if they ended up offering. With that said, I think he's UT's to lose at this point.

Thank goodness OU is very tight on scholarships right now. They have to decide if they want to make room for Colbert right now. I'd be mildly surprised if OU got serious with Colbert. If Texas and TAMU know about him, OU definitely does.

Remember the "mystery recruit" we've talked about a few times? I can't believe I overlooked this guy at first, but I think DB LaDarrell McNeil of Dallas Wilmer-Hutchins is a possibility. There were some hard feelings back in February when McNeil came to Austin for the first Junior Day and didn't receive an offer, but you never know. He may be the guy 24/7 Hook 'Em has been referencing for a few weeks now. Tennessee isn't a great program and they're far from home.

Big news came down earlier this evening. DB Landon Collins of Geismar, LA will be making his official visit to Austin for banquet weekend on December 9th and 10th. Lots of other studs could be in town that weekend as well. I still don't think UT has much of a shot, but pretty cool that he'll be in Austin with all of the other 2012 commitments and then head to Orlando with all of those guys for the 2012 Under Armour All-American Game a few weeks later.

I'm cool with the blue chip recruits visiting on banquet weekend instead of K State weekend. Especially given the fits the Wildcats have given us. All the 2012 commits will be there, should be a lot of comradery and a family atmosphere. I'd like to see Texas land one big OOS recruit to get some future momentum.

Yeah, my guess is there were some hard feelings initially when McNeil didn't receive an offer and I also felt like the staff just didn't want to deal with Barnett. That may still be the case. Just throwing his name out there for the sake of conversation and because UT will have lost three safeties when the season ends (Brewster, Gideon and Scott).

Per Hook 'Em 24/7 this morning, OT John Theus of Jacksonville, FL will not be visiting Texas. As long as Mark Richt remains the coach at Georgia, that's where he will end up signing. Shows you how quickly things can turn in recruiting now that Georgia has picked themselves up off of the mat, won a few games in a row and beat their biggest rival (Florida).

**Doesn't look like DB LaDarrell McNeil is the "mystery recruit" we've talked about, but encouraging that Duane Akina stopped by his high school last Friday to check in. No word if UT is thinking about offering but it appears they're trying to get their foot back in the door as McNeil has been making unofficial visits. He was in Lubbock this past weekend and also plans to attend games at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

**JUCO OL Donald Hawkins is supposed to tentatively plan his official visit to Texas today. Because of his team's playoff schedule, Kansas State on November 19th is the only remaining home game he'll be able to make. Banquet weekend is "Plan B" for Hawkins should he be unavailable in November.

**Per Hook 'Em 24/7, WR Dorial Green-Beckham will also be in Austin on November 19th for an official visit if his Hillcrest team is out of the playoffs.

**Lastly, there were some rumors last week that DT Malcom Brown's commitment to Texas wasn't solid and he planned on taking an official visit to Oklahoma. His father shot down all of those rumors after they attended the Kansas game this weekend:

“Everything went well,” Gerald Brown said Sunday afternoon. “We enjoyed our visit. There will be no OU visit for Malcom. He is UT 100%.”

Other than their one loss to a bigger Arkansas school in early September, they've beaten everyone else handily. I'm like you, though. I haven't the slightest clue as to what kind of competition they'll face in the playoffs. Their first round game goes down this Wednesday, November 2nd, against a St. Clair team that's 7-3. My biggest worry with DGB is that his team makes a deep playoff run and then he decides not to visit Texas because he'll be busy playing basketball or simply tires of the process.

Overstreet actually committed to UT last night after talking things over with his father. Here are some more quotes from him:

"Yesterday, me and my dad laid out my options," Overstreet said. "They stopped recruiting QBs, so I made a commitment to stop looking."

"A lot of people think I'm not good as a quarterback just because of some of the things I need to do at Tatum to help us win," Overstreet said. "But I believe I can do a good mixture of run and pass. I can throw a lot better than people might think."

TFloss32

And for QB Connor Brewer's reaction:

"I knew they were going to (offer another quarterback). I talked to (Bryan) Harsin about it. They just need a guy for numbers almost because they lost a couple of guys," Brewer said. "They only had two guys on scholarship and with me it's three and even three isn't really strong number for quarterback especially at a university like Texas ... I will go in and compete against anyone they bring in."

Brewer's official visit to UT will be for banquet weekend on December 9th and 10th. Good to know one of Texas' biggest recruiters will in the house for that. He's also planning on enrolling for spring ball.

According the mods over there, they think it's more about him not making any solid plans yet rather than it being a reflection of how he feels about the Longhorns. No matter you how interpret that, this recruitment doesn't have a positive vibe about it at the moment. Floss, I'm very bearish on Texas' chances with Peat. It doesn't look right now, and I'm not sure how it will improve.

I hope the Texas coaches and staff lay out their academic plan for Hawkins. This is how you get into to UT, this is how you stay at UT, this is how you graduate from UT. It sounds like he needs reassurance. With our chances dimming on Peat, I believe Hawkins is in the conversation for the most important recruit left on Texas' board.

I assume we'll see some movement on Tre'von Armstead or Brantley, possibly if things don't pick up with Peat. I think T. Armstead is take every single year, but the problem is that he'll need a few years in the program before he can contribute. It's extremely difficult to find a LT ready to play immediately. Texas hit the Lotto with Josh Cochran. If Texas misses on Peat, Hawkins and Brantley, I'm concerned that Texas won't be able to sign a college ready OT in the 2012 class. I think we get one more OT, but he'll likely be a project.

I love Estelle and Hughes, but both are raw. I think it's possible that Estelle could play right away, but it's not ideal.

Floss is their a shred of hope with Brantley? He seems very solid to OK State. T. Armstead seems only sightly more open. Both will be difficult gets. I think we'll see a new name pop up on the radar soon.

I always felt Peat would be a tough pull due to Nebraska connection. Now it appears Stanford is gaining major steam as Texas and FSU seem to be falling out of favor. If we can get a visit and rack up some wins in next few weeks maybe my thoughts will change, but until then I am not holding any hope at this point. Sad to deal with reality as Peat is a rare guy that could get PT right away and is our biggest need for the class. Not to mention after missing out on Westerman last year...

Unfortunately, there's not a lot of info on Brantley right now other than him recently saying he's "100%" to OSU. I think it says a lot about UT's interest that Searels used his bye week evaluation on Brantley and made a stop in Carthage. JS: So what have you heard? We haven’t done a percentage piece for recruiting in a while, so any thoughts would be appreciated.

BC: The next commit will probably be Corey Coleman. The coaches love his playmaking on the offensive side of the ball, and he’s probably the best pure cover guy on the board. He’s versatile. Call it 75%. The next kid should be an offensive lineman. Out of the out of state kids, I’ve heard Searels is quietly confident on Andrus Peat. Call it 60% for now and it skyrockets if he gets on campus. He knows he can play right away. As for the other out of state kids I think they’re a pipe dream with the exception of Green-Beckham. He loves our staff and loves our offense. Call it 40% right now.

**Unfortunately I can't find a list of guys that are attending the Tech game this weekend, but RB Johnathan Gray will be in town with his family. I'll post as soon as I see other names.

**Some official visit news...DE Torshiro Davis, OL/DL Arik Armstead and DB Landon Collins will all be in Tuscaloosa this weekend on their official visits to Alabama. Seemingly every recruit under the sun will be there for that game.

**DE Mario Edwards returned to Tallahassee last week for an unofficial visit to FSU. It was an opportunity for him and his father to meet with the coaching staff and get on the same page with his recruitment. Apparently the FSU staff feels much better now about where they stand with Edwards (he's technically still committed) and two of their coaches will be in attendance at Denton Ryan's game this evening.

**I don't see where this prospect would fit in without more attrition or an early commitment from WR Dorial Green-Beckham to a school other than Texas, but the coaching staff is keeping tabs on WR Marcus Johnson of League City Clear Springs who is currently committed to Texas Tech. He was a no-name prospect for most of the year but people started raving about his ability after the summer camps he attended.

**Lastly, not only is Duane Akina staying in touch with DT Javonte Magee of San Antonio Sam Houston, but he's also requested transcripts and film on his teammate, DB Leo Thomas. Apparently Arizona (who he originally committed to) offered Thomas earlier in the year because Akina pushed them to do so before he ended up returning to UT.

i've felt for a while from all his quotes and spotting him at OU game that he would end up being a sooner - so glad to see this news. anywhere but OU is a win for us at this point, I don't see him ending up at Texas under any circumstances so go Seminoles I say.

He and Major Applewhite had a discussion on Monday night about the transfer of WR Chris Jones and the possibility of spot opening up. Supposedly Applewhite will speak with Mack Brown soon about offering and Johnson says he'll make a decision fairly quickly should that happen. He has an invite to the Kansas State game in two weeks and he said he'll be there as long as there are no issues with the high school playoffs. I think he switches to UT if given the opportunity to do so and the timing worked out nicely with the victory over Tech today.

Some quotes from WR Marcus Johnson on a possible UT offer:

"Coach (Major) Applewhite had come up to our school and had been talking to my coaches, showing interest. He watched film and on Halloween he called," Johnson said. "He basically said he's always been interested in me and they had a spot open up because of a transfer. Nothing's 100 percent yet, but he basically told me that they're going to talk about trying to make me an offer when the spot officially opens up."

"He asked me if I'm interested. I told him I'm interested. I still have great respect for Texas Tech. They were the first team who believed d in me, my first offer.

"Whatever happens, I need to make sure I make the right decision for me. If Texas offers, I'll lay everything out on paper, go over my options and make the best decision possible for myself."

"I still want to make the best decision possible. I love Texas, I love Texas Tech. I love both schools. It will basically come down to writing everything down and making sure I make the best decision possible," Johnson said. "Once I know if (an offer) is official, I'll let them know if I need some time to talk things over with my family, and then I'll probably make a decision a couple days after that."

**It's official that RB Traylon Shead is transferring. Most of us knew it was inevitable with RB Johnathan Gray arriving on campus for 2012. I'm guessing we'll know quickly if this gives the UT staff the opportunity to extend another scholarship offer for this class.

**DB Adrian Colbert has chosen to forgo the Baylor/OU game on November 19th and will instead make his way to Austin to watch UT in action against Kansas State. He will have the chance to sit down with Mack Brown afterwards and have his scholarship offer made official. If he doesn't end up committing shortly after that, the rest of his schedule includes an official to Baylor for the UT game on December 3rd and an official to UT for banquet weekend on December 9th and 10th.

Just a heads up that there's a chance WR Dorial Green-Beckham could be attending the UT/Mizzou game this weekend in Columbia. Hillcrest plays their second round game tomorrow night against an undefeated Union team and if they lose DGB's high school career will obviously be over. If they end up winning, their third round game will be Saturday making him unavailable. Potential for him to see UT live two weeks in a row.

Good quotes from RB Johnathan Gray after his visit for the Tech game:

“I was excited to see that a lot of young players are helping the Longhorns win games,” Gray said. “That lets me know that the future for us is going to be great. I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

“Getting a chance to see Joe Bergeron and Fozzy run hard behind the offensive line was great. In order for us to compete for Big 12 and National Championships, we have to be physical in the trenches,” he said

There's a lot of old recruiting news being rehashed this morning, but there are two things of interest per Hook 'Em 24/7:

**Texas may be the main competition with LSU for DE Torshiro Davis' signature. Rumor is Alabama has some other prospects ahead of Davis on their recruiting board right now and he's not getting as much attention as others. Good opportunity for the UT staff to assure him that he's a priority of theirs and he's still scheduled to make his official to Austin for banquet weekend on December 9th and 10th.

**Talks are supposedy serious enough that we can put ATH Kendall Sanders of Athens back on UT's recruiting radar. What's interesting is Hook 'Em 24/7 believes Sanders could be a priority to receive an offer over others if a spot opens up. It's kind of confusing figuring out exactly what they're alluding to since TWO spots just opened up and there are three guys on the verge of receiving an offer (WR Marcus Johnson, ATH Corey Coleman, ATH Daje Johnson), but hopefully we'll learn more as the season comes to a close.

"Right now I'm being recruited as an athlete, some receiver, some tailback, some defensive back," said Agholor, who took his first and only official visit to Notre Dame on Oct. 7, but has yet to narrow down his choices. Some quotes from DB Adrian Colbert as he prepares to visit UT:

"They (UT) just pretty much went over a couple things with me, told me they'd be offering me and would be keeping in contact with me," Colbert said. "They said there's no rush about anything. I can just take my time, visit other places and I don't have to make any hasty decisions until I come there on my official visit."

"Texas is not that far behind (Baylor) because I've liked them for a couple years. I made first trip down there my sophomore year for Texas Relays. It's a great environment, and that was just from a track athlete's point of view," Colbert said. "Now that I'm really big on football, it could get really crazy. They could go up really high on my list just off that one visit."

"I'm really interested to see that. At state (track and field meet), all the athletes warmed up inside the (football) stadium. I was just amazed. I had never been inside the stadium. I was like, wow, this is awesome. There are so many seats, knowing that Texas always fills up the stands in a game is really cool. I was thinking 'Wow, what would it be like to play here?'"

"Mack Brown sent me a letter. It was one of the coolest letters I've got. I thought it would be a written offer but he said he can't wait to see me when I come down for my visit in December, he hopes I enjoyed my bye week and hopes my shoulder is getting better."

Mack Brown is obviously huge on sending out those love notes.

Interesting to see first JT / Swoopes ranking, I am damn curious what the staff is thinking between these two guys.

Hook 'Em 24/7 is reporting that UT is currently in talks with one of the top out-of-state prospects in the nation. Considering everything that's going on with Penn State right now, my first guess is DE Noah Spence of Harrisburg, PA. UT needs that speed rusher in this class and he was high on UT before talks went quiet. He said during the summer that he'd visit Austin if he was given an invite. Perfect time to pick things up with him. See his tweet last night:

i would love for it to be spence, i'd certainly rather be battling penn state instead of lsu (torshiro davis) - even before all this recent news hit.

and speed DE is such a critical position and need this class.

Unless it's an offensive tackle, Spence would make the most sense based on needs. However, there's no word yet if the UT staff made contact first or vice versa. Both sides are trying to keep things behind the scenes.

Missouri has officially lost three commitments (two Texans) since their decision to move to the SEC: OL Simon Goines, OL Evan Boehm and RB Jonathan Williams. What's worse is they've been placed in the SEC East. Not a great recruiting move for a program who relies heavily on Texas talent. DT Donald Hopkins of Lago Vista is on his way to decommitting as well:

“I think the move was good for Missouri, but I might have to reconsider my commitment since I’ve always wanted to play in the Big 12,” said Hopkins, whose only other Big 12 offers were from Baylor and Kansas. “I want to stay close to my family and friends.”

Per Hook 'Em 24/7, OL Donald Hawkins has chosen Florida over Georgia for his fifth official visit. No date has been scheduled for his trip to Gainesville, but he's set for UT on November 19th and Oklahoma State on December 3rd. He's already officially visited Kansas State and Kentucky.

I can't find the exact quote from Mack Brown, but it's worth noting that he recently said the staff is NOT concerned about the numbers game right now when it comes to recruiting. Hook 'Em 24/7 has been saying they'll go after any recruit as long as they feel they can contribute or are a position of need. That's a good indication that the staff is expecting a decent amount of attrition and the 2012 class could grow to 24 or 25 if everything plays out in UT's favor. There is supposedly a lot of recruiting momentum right now in Texas' favor because of all the success the young players are having and the program is winning games despite being loaded with freshmen and sophomores.

Some great news on OT Andrus Peat...a lot of us have been worried that UT has been slipping in this recruitment, but Peat talked to Stacy Searels yesterday and is in the process of setting up an official visit to Texas. He's much like other big-name recruits in the sense that UT wants him on campus for Kansas State weekend (Nov. 19th) or banquet weekend (Dec. 9th and 10th). He is also planning visits to Florida State and USC. He'll be in Palo Alto this weekend for Stanford/Oregon and he'll be in Lincoln on Thanksgiving weekend.

More proof that the staff is hitting recruiting hard right now and expecting attrition. Bo Davis has been in contact with JUCO DT Brandon Moore of East Mississippi CC (same school as DE Denico Autry). According to Moore, not only has he been offered by UT but he could also be visiting for Kansas State weekend. The Longhorns are in the mix with other schools such as Auburn, Miami and Texas A&M. I believe he has already visited College Station this year. Moore orginally signed with Alabama out of high school and was a freshman when they won the national title.

Forgot to mention above that Bo Davis recruited Moore for Alabama in 2009, so there is a history there that could work in Texas' favor. The kid does have some prior issues (not sure what specifically) so we'll see how far it goes.

Interesting news on the new DT. I agree, Texas seems serious about JUCO players. I would love for Texas to take Moore and Autry. Moore would definitely soften the blow of losing Randall.

I love the UCLA news. I could potentially go to 3 Texas games without leaving DFW in 2014.

Good news on Peat. I'm bit skeptical. It'll be interesting to read his quotes after the Stanford game. An Oregon win would probably help here.

Texas probably does need to go to 25. Trim the fat, and go get recruits that have undergone more thorough evaluations from much better evaluators. Attrition is an unpleasant aspect of big time college football, but at Texas it's often best for both parties to move on when a player transfers.

Either way it's no surprise. Texas wants all the cupcake games they can get, they don't want to play Arky.

hell, it shouldn't matter to you who you schedule - any competitive team you put on your schedule you lose against. so why not play better teams and lose to them? makes sense for you guys.

but that's not necessarily best route for OU or Texas, or any other team that plays in BCS games or competes on nat'l stage.
