Another quick update on WR Dorial Green-Beckham...coaches from Mizzou, OU and possibly Arkansas will be in St. Louis this evening to watch him play in his basketball tournament. Texas plans on being there tomorrow.

Javonte Magee has committed to Baylor, he was just given a 5th star by rivals considering his play in The Army all American game. What ever happened to the recruitment of Javonte? I really liked his size, athleticism and play!

Good thing he hasn't ruled out that first Junior Day, but I also wonder why James would wait. He has mentioned wanting to see OL Camrhon Hughes and the team go through spring drills and he'll be able to if he attends the second Junior Day. I really don't care either way as long as he gets offered, but it would be nice for him to be around the other big names.

Good catch Floss, I read about that but I had forgotten. Hughes and James are so tight, I can't see this going any other way than James to Texas.

Magee is a helluva get for Baylor. He allegedly has grade issues, but Briles can certainly get him in. Who hasn't Briles been able to get in? Yesh.

Update from TE Blaine Irby's Facebook page. Sounds like a wise decision on his part to retire:

"Had knee surgery yesterday morning on my left knee (not the famous one). It was suppose to be a standard scope, only 30 minute procedure, be on crutches for 1-2 days, just a little clean up. But while in surgery they realized that my knee was a little more messed up than they had expected. The doctor had to perform a micro fracture on my bone to help repair my articular cartilage. So this means that I will be on crutches for 6 weeks now. Pretty disappointed, but better now than later. Holler at my if you have any questions."

I wish Irby nothing but the best. Texas couldn't have possibly asked for more from him this season. I'm happy that he went out on a high note and had a few spotlight moments. Irby's highlights from this season far overshadow the video of his injury.

For the record I have never been a full time enrolled student at UT. In 18 hours I have a 4.0 though. I currently attend the smallest D1 school that fields a football team. So... I root for Texas because we get steamrolled. I am from Texas as well.

Count me as a t-shirt fan, I give zero fucks.

:toast

I've mentioned before I'm not a graduate of UT -- I went to UIW -- but my wife is a UT grad and we have season tickets. I was a t-shirt fan before and even more so now. I give zero x 100 fucks aswell! :ihit

This is interesting to say the least. In regards to how it would affect DGB, you would have to think he would consider the long term upside and potential with UT versus one year with an established quarterback.

Quotes from 2013 DB Marcell Harris per Hook 'Em 24/7. He's still saying he plans to return to Austin next month for the first Junior Day. A reminder that his UT offer will become official the day after National Signing Day (February 2nd).

“It's a lot of tradition right there with Texas,” Harris said. “It's a good school and good state to be in. Down the line, like the other schools that offer me, I'll always be looking at them.”

“Any school that makes me a priority, I'm blessed to have that chance,” Harris said. “There are a couple of guys who should be getting offers at the same time who are pretty good. We'll all be there together at the (Texas) junior day.”

“I didn't think they were going to come out and be that fast (the UT defense),” Harris said. “The defense moves around a lot and Coach Akina gets the (defensive backs) right. I think they have some safeties who are leaving, so that's an intriguing opportunity.”

“I'll probably start narrowing during the end of the summertime,” Harris said. “I want to get a look at as many schools as I can and get a feel for everything. After the summer I want to have a top five and then commit some time after that.”

No problem at all. Helps me remember what's going on. Barrett is going to pretty much have his pick of school whether Texas enters the picture or not. I hope the Horns decide to at least bring him in for a visit. Read tonight that UT has also invited 2013 QB Richard Lagow of Plano in for Junior Days, but it's unclear which one right now. He mentioned he hasn't had any direct contact with Texas in over a year, but a coach stopped by his school with an invitation. Odd development to say the least.

Quotes from 2013 DE DJ Ward of Lawton, OK. It's obvious that Texas is behind right now and things are in the beginning stages. He also has invites from OU and Oklahoma State to attend their Junior Days.

"I just got a call from Texas a couple of hours ago," Ward said Friday afternoon. "They said I've been approved so I'm guessing in a way they offered. They wanted me to come down for some junior days they have planned. I forgot the date exactly but I think it's sometime in early February."

"I still have some things to work out before I can go to any of them," Ward said. "I just have to find out what my family is doing and how I'm going to get there and get back and things like that."

"This is like their first time to say anything to me so they still aren't really up there," Ward said. "They're at least in the top eight but they're not in the top five or top three or anything like that."

"I didn't know what to expect. It's just happening and I'm sitting back and watching it all," he said. "I like it. I get to see different coaches and hear what they have to tell me and inviting me out to their schools. It's a good deal."

"I've been to a couple of games this past season. I went to a couple of OU games, OSU, I went to a TCU game," Ward said. "The atmosphere at all the places was just fun and great to be around."

Texas did try to get him on campus for some games this season, so I'm not sure why he's saying he's just now hearing from Texas. Maybe he's referring to direct contact with the staff versus communication with his coach. Glad to know UT has been on this one longer than we thought.

Per Hook 'Em 24/7, Darrell Wyatt did make a trip to Missouri to see WR Dorial Green-Beckham as expected and things continue to be very positive. He ended up doing yet another in-home visit with the Beckham family and UT was the only school present on Saturday (Arkansas and Mizzou visited Friday evening). Sounds like OU wasn't around at all and the thought is they are pretty much out of the race. Bobby Petrino of Arkansas is scheduled to make his in-home visit some time this week and he's still trying to get DGB on campus for an official visit before National Signing Day. No word yet on when Mack Brown plans to make a trip to Springfield.

Two new names to keep in mind for the 2013 class from Hook 'Em 24/7:

TE, Corey Mangus, Garland Rowlett (6-5, 215)

DE, Daeshon Hall, Lancaster (6-6, 220)
-moved to Lancaster before the 2011 season from Seattle area

HuskerOnline (Nebraska site) had a blurb on 2013 QB JT Barrett recently in which they asked him about his relationship with Texas. Barrett supposedly had a long talk with Bryan Harsin last Thursday about UT's plans for the 2013 class. Not much detail was given as to what was said, but it sounds like things could get going with Barrett again if the staff doesn't like what they hear from Swoopes at the first Junior Day. They may also decide to bring Barrett in no matter what, but it's simply too early to tell right now. With that said, I think things with Swoopes will be positive and I expect the staff to pursue him for a while.

So Petrino is going to burn his official visit on the week of January 16th. Just a gut feeling, but it feels desperate. I'm not saying it's Arkansas' last shot, but I'm saying that Petrino feels a strong urge to use his in home visit 2 weeks before Signing Day just to get DGB to make an official visit. For a team that is is supposed leader for DGB, it's an interesting move.

Another shrewd recruiting move by Coach Wyatt to go on Saturday to get the Beckhams all to himself. I think Wyatt has played DGB's recruitment as well as he possibly could. The fact that Texas is even a finalist at this point is a testament to Wyatt's skill as a recruiter.

I read that also. I'm not sure if you can compare Ward to Turner or Cobbs, both seemed to really like Texas from the get go. If Manny gives Ward his full and undivided attention, I like Texas' chances to get into the mix.

Those measureables really jump out at you. I think Reggie Wilson could be Texas' last DE under 6'3'' for a long time. The staff seems to really like the big SDE types.

I like what I read about Mangus, 6'5'' and a fluid athlete. Texas really needs to consider how they recruit TEs. 6'2'' high school WRs ain't getting it done.

That sounds pretty consistent with what I've gathered on Barrett and Texas. I think he's willing to wait on Texas until Swoopes makes a decision. I think Barrett would even come to Texas with Swoopes already in the fold, but Swoopes definitely wouldn't like that. It sounds like Texas is playing this the right way. Harsin seems to be upfront and honest with his communication with Barrett.

Texas will get either Swoopes or Barrett. It's a win - win.

Another quick update on WR Dorial Green-Beckham...coaches from Mizzou, OU and possibly Arkansas will be in St. Louis this evening to watch him play in his basketball tournament. Texas plans on being there tomorrow.

shyne-

See this one post above. I got my posts mixed up last week about DGB's basketball tourney. I had the dates correct (19th-21st) but for some reason I was confused and was referring to his tournament being last weekend. The coaches from Arkansas, Mizzou and Texas were in Springfield last weekend, not St. Louis. The tournament in St. Louis is THIS Thursday through Saturday which is the timeframe that Petrino and his staff are trying to get DGB to Fayetteville for an official visit. It's the one weekend that the Arkansas staff has had their eye on, but I don't think DGB has ever set up the date. They're trying to get him in with other names such as ATH Bralon Addison, RB Trey Williams, LB Dalton Santos and WR Davonte Neal.

Hillcrest plays in this tournament at Lindbergh HS in St. Louis every year so I doubt it's something DGB wants to skip out on. Unless DGB gets home late Friday night or Saturday morning (St. Louis is three hours from Springfield), then I doubt he makes it without traveling straight from St. Louis.

Wow!! Good find TFloss. Thats a hurter for LSU. I was suprised with him committing to LSU to begin with.... considering his strong emphasis on location. His older brother supposedly is transferring from Indiana for a unknown school at the time. I guess this family is full of suprise's. I hope we can get MEJ to sway his decision in a similar fashion.

State schools in California have always had trouble paying their coaches well. Another casualty. Big pick up for U Dub.

With Tosh headed to Washington, a few top recruits in Shaq Thompson and Arik Armstead are in a state of indecision. Arik had been highly expected to sign with cal for a few days now. He was to announce today considering that he wants to enroll early, but he has delayed. Both guys twitter pages tell the story. Wish we could have got Arik on campus, he could've possibly been considering Texas right now. Hell I wish we could be considered by Shaq, he was arguably the most impressive at the Army all American game. Recruitment is a marathon not a sprint! We hear it and see it ever year. Exciting stuff!

Don't be surprised if Thomas Johnson commits to A&M as well. I have sources close to Matt Davis that say that he and Thomas Johnson developed a friendship from the summer 7 on 7's. Matt is a super charismatic recruiter and he's been relentless to bring more talent to A&M and especially at the expense of Texas due to the hatred that he developed for Texas as result to his recruitment. He feels that Texas lied to him about their actual desire to bring him in. He feels that after he injured his knee that Texas completely stopped contacting him.

Somebody was asking about star ratings and I found some stats from Rivals from 2005 to 2009 I summarized below. Lots of people like to say the ratings don't matter because of the guys that come out of nowhere. But the reality is the odds are in favor of the nationally ranked guys. Pretty interesting and thought worth sharing.

% of overall Div 1A Signees by star rating
5* - 1.3%
4* - 12.6%
3* - 32.9%
2* or lower - 53.3%

Odds of being All-American
5* - 1 in 15
4* - 1 in 54
3* - 1 in 147
2* or lower - 1 in 358
Overall - 1 in 145

**Folks on the Arkansas side of things are saying WR Dorial Green-Beckham WILL be coming to their big recruiting event on an official visit this weekend. No details were given if he plans to work around his basketball schedule or if he's skipping his tournament altogether. Mack Brown's in-home visit with the Beckham family is supposed to go down next week.

**Interesting scenario brewing on the TE offer for the 2012 class. TE Vincent Hobbs has said the staff is planning on bringing in an additional TE this weekend that is currently committed to OOS school. The report didn't mention if the prospect was a Texan, however. The first two prospects that came to mind were Dominic Ramacher who's committed to Oklahoma State and Taylor McNamara who's committed to OU. We should know more by tonight but this definitely could interfere with Hobbs' plans of getting an offer.

**The reports vary on who actually visited TE Christo Kourtzidis last night in Orange, CA, but it looks like it was either Major Applewhite or Bruce Chambers. The visit to Texas is tentatively scheduled for Saturday and whether or not he travels to Austin may depend on how his in-home visit with FSU goes this evening.

**Talking about the second Junior Day on February 25th...2013 TE Jeremiah Gaines and 2013 LB Brett Wade are two of the bigger names being mentioned so far.

**I never added this guy's name to the Junior Day list because I wanted to get more information, but 2013 QB Richard Lagow of Plano does NOT have an invite to Austin. I thought it was pretty random that the staff hadn't made contact in over a year but he somehow managed to receive an invite to the first Junior Day. Clearly there was a misunderstanding.

I wouldn't worry about this. Reading Papa Harris' comments, the family was just there in Austin. The purpose of the Junior Day visit is to receive an offer, and Harris has a Texas offer on February 2nd. Applewhite is Texas' best offensive recruiter and he's tight Kourtzidis' head coach former Texas QB Greg Cicero. Wise decision sending the Major.

I know the 2013 class is a down year at the top, but I think the depth is excellent as some positions. Look at the First Junior Day list, and the two early candidate for the Second Junior Day List. Plenty of talented kids that can help Texas.

I love the Hollins news. He and Wade are my 2 favorites on defense. I think everybody is going to be a fan after watching his junior film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfSYjFI1meI

The Lagow news struck me as odd. I saw Plano vs. Allen in person last season and Lagow didn't show me much other than a nice frame.

What has really jumped out at me from watching D.J. Ward's film is his length wing span, and strength. If he gets near the QB / ball carrier, he's going to his hands on them and he's going to bring them down.

I didn't see an explosive first step, but Ward fits what Manny Diaz is looking for. With his frame he can play inside and outside, be stout against the run, and get after the QB. I think the SDE is here to stay at Texas.

I had read that as well but never found the original quote. It's a bit much for them to fly to Texas twice in two months. If he's committed to that summer camp where all of the other commitments will be, that's solid. Great timing if he wants to make a decision before his senior season.

Hopefully Texas can steal one late in the game. I'm sure he likes the idea of immediate playing time. The Applewhite/Cicero connection could end up paying dividends. Would be yet another feather in Major's recruiting cap. You think Irby will be his host since he's a California boy?

Quotes from ATH Daje Johnson:

"I love both positions (RB and DB)," Johnson said. "I guess that's what's easy about picking my position because I would play either position. I just want to find out which position will get me on the field quicker because I want to play right away. That's my goal."

"Today they came to my school and coach (Darrell) Wyatt he told me he wanted me to take a visit up there and possibly I'd be offered in a couple of days," he said.

"To be honest I was surprised. My coach texted me and told me to come down to the field house. I didn't know what he was talking about and then I saw [Coach Wyatt]. I was surprised. We were talking about setting up the visit and he was telling me they're down to their last couple of offers and they're looking for the best athlete."

"They're (Texas) high up there on my list," Johnson said of Texas. "It's not really a list. I guess they're right up there interest-wise with TCU. I'll just see how the visit goes and talk about it with my dad and my mom and all that."

"I think it's still offense, somewhere on offense," he said. "I'm not really sure of the exact position, but I guess we'll talk about that on my official visit."

**TE Christo Kourtzidis will have an in-home with FSU coach Jimbo Fisher this evening. There is some talk on the FSU side of things that Kourtzidis could still decide against visiting Texas this weekend once he finishes speaking with Fisher, but it's a good sign for UT if he stays firm with his plans to visit Austin regardless.

**LSU coach Les Miles was in Denton last night to do an in-home visit with DE Mario Edwards. The official visit to Baton Rouge this weekend is definitely on. Jimbo Fisher has schedule his in-home with the Edwards family for Friday before he takes that trip. Mack Brown should have the last word next week.

**Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino has re-scheduled his in-home visit with WR Dorial Green-Beckham. Some assistant coaches for the Razorbacks were in Springfield yesterday instead and Petrino will be visiting next Thursday.

I think MEJ still considering LSU and keeping options open is good at this point for Texas. At this point I just want him questioning if FSU is best place and thinking about other options - I think that keeps us in the game

I agree. I'm still tempering my expectations but LSU is something to distract him. His tune seems to change after every visit he makes. It's been a long time since his visit to Austin so UT will need a bit of magic, but hopefully Mack and Diaz getting the last word will have some sort of impact. FSU appears to have solid positioning right now.

**Noles247 (FSU site) is tweeting that TE Christo Kourtzidis will NOT be visiting Texas this weekend, per his father. I think that recruitment changed quicker than Wallace's did a few weeks ago.

**Hook 'Em 24/7 is now reporting there's another committed recruit Texas is still communicating with and may try to get on campus as early as this weekend. No additional details were given. ATH Corey Coleman, maybe?

Finally some info on 2013 RB Keith Ford from Hook 'Em 24/7. He does have an invite to either of the Texas Junior Days and both dates are open on his schedule, but he and his family are in the process of deciding which weekend they will travel to Austin. He already has Junior Days at Nebraska, Notre Dame and OU set. Major Applewhite has a tough sell on his hands with the Horns being stacked at RB for at least two more years and Ford is not a native Texan.

They've been hinting at Brooks making a surprise visit to campus since banquet weekend in December, so there must be a reason they're hanging on to this story. Maybe there will some real movement now that Brent Venables (his lead recruiter at OU) has taken the defensive coordinator job at Clemson. I'm curious as to what the staff's plans are now that they've set up ATH Daje Johnson for an official visit but they're still contacting Brooks. Similar players on the surface and you wouldn't think they'd offer both.

According to somebody I know well and that knows personally, Thomas Johnson decommited to Texas because he was unhappy with Texas coaches continuing to recruit multiple wide receivers when he felt there was an understanding on how many players they were recruiting. He was obvioulsy fine with us and Cayleb Jones and coaches did let him know we were recruiting DGB. But when we got commitments from Kendall Sanders and told him WR was option, then Marcus Johnson, it pissed him off something fierce as he felt it violated the understanding coaches gave him. Really makes me question us recruiting Marcus Johnson as that appears to be straw that broke camel's back. Sanders was at least recruiting as athlete so may not have been issue, but then another commit. Can't blame the guy if that was perception he was being given.

I can believe that, and I also understand both parties position. I think Texas was just trying to assure the position because it's likely someone will be a bust. U always have to look out for the well being of the program over one recruit. But at the same time u have to be honest about what ur trying to do in recruiting to help establish trust between the coaches and recruits. Trust is the most important aspect of any relationship. It's hard to make a player commit to u for four years if hes questioning if he can trust u. Trust is apart of feeling comfortable and being comfortable at a university is usually what recruits list as most important.

Cool...Supposedly the coaches are still going full throttle for Torshiro Davis. Manny, Bo Davis and Oscar Giles did a in home visit recently before his official to LSU. I don't mind the push to the end at all but I've never felt that he would change his commitment at all. I remember his face in the pics posted of him on his visit to Texas and he looked very uninvolved. But that would be a pleasant surprise to get him, u never know. Reading the DGB update on Orangebloods this morning, it sounds like DGB might like Arkansas and his family might prefer another school. Missouri Compromise II?

The update also said that the Beckhams have called every school that they are no longer considering. Alabama received a call a few weeks ago. Texas has not received that call, and Mack is expected to make the in home visit next week.

Keep your chin up fellas, we're still in this.

As long as we dont get the call saying there is no need for Mack to make his official visit like MEJ did then I think we have a small shot. If Mack gets that visit you never know what could happen.

I think the parents want him to come to Texas, for the main fact that there is going to be so many distractions being so close to home with old friends, his girlfriend, and the media coverage. Texas is away from all that, but not that far away to where they cant visit frequently. Lets hope Macks visit stays on track and pray he can close the deal.

A couple more updates from the official visit weekend...

**Doesn't sound like 2013 OL/DL Jake Raulerson was officially offered and that will have to wait until at least the day after National Signing Day. He had a really good time and had several meetings with different staff members. He was basically told they can see him being a DE and coming in as TE in certain offensive packages. He also spent a lot of time with Bennie Wylie and he made a great impression as he usually does on visiting recruits. Raulerson didn't have a host over the weekend because his visit was considered unofficial, but he was shown around campus mostly by WR Jaxon Shipley and OL Josh Cochran.

**No movement on TE Vincent Hobbs as of this morning. He is scheduled to meet with Mack Brown today. I'd be shocked if he doesn't receive an offer after being brought in on an official visit and seeing pictures of him sporting the UT jersey.

If that report is true (most stuff on DGB is strictly hearsay), I'd love to know what it is about Arkansas that his parents aren't exactly on board with. UT may not win out but if it comes down to which school offers intangibles that provide a certain comfort level for the family, I still like the Horns' chances. Mack having the last in-home/school visit will be big.

Quotes from 2013 OL/DL Jake Raulerson:

"It was a great visit. We got to meet with some of the academic people at the start and it was just a great visit overall. I had a really good time," said Raulerson.

"I got to hang out with guys like Josh Cochran, Jaxon Shipley. It was a lot of fun hanging out with them," Raulerson said. "They're really, really good guys. It shows how good the guys are at Texas. We hung out a little bit and I got the players' perspective, saw the dorm rooms and things like that."

"Coach (Stacy) Searels was talking to me about how he thinks I can play any position on the line. Coach (Bryan) Harsin and (Manny) Diaz actually thought of playing me at defensive end and switching me in for some tight end packages throughout the game. I thought that was pretty awesome to tell me that. It's an offensive lineman's dream to get to play some tight end."

"It was just a great visit. The 2012 guys had a good time. Once 2013 rolls around, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it," Raulerson said. "It was really good experience. It was a lot of fun to talk to those guys, ask them questions about the process, about everything. They're really good dudes and they're going to do great things next year."

"I liked my (UT) jersey," Raulerson said. "But I'm still weighing my options."

I'd add that Coach Beckham has been most vocal about Texas in press conferences and interviews. I'm not saying for certain that DGB's parents back Texas, but there's an argument to be made that they do. Need to get Mack in there and remind everybody of the warm family environment at Texas.

There's a lot of uncertainty for that right now. There are several guys that are "maybes" or "think they have invitations." I believe the only guy confirmed for JD2 is 2013 WR Eldridge Massington from West Mesquite. Great news on LB Dalton Santos. I was offline for a few hours so it was a great surprise to see he's been offered. Texas has always needed a true MLB in this class and it sounds like they'll get him on board soon. I remember becoming a huge fan of Manny Diaz earlier in the year when he took the time to call Santos and apologize for Texas not giving him a more thorough evaluation because it was clear he's a talented prospect and everyone knew he was good enough to play at UT (he also grew up a fan of Texas). Santos just kind of got lost in the mix once the new staff came in and didn't have a lot of time to recruit like they normally would. The quotes below tell the story of how things have developed in recent days:

"Honestly, it just happened a couple days ago. Coach (Stacy) Searels will be here, coach (Mack) Brown and coach (Manny) Diaz on Wednesday. Then I'm taking a visit up there next week," Santos said.

"Coach Searels called me. He said a spot is open and it's yours. He asked if I wanted to take an official visit and I told him I did," Santos said. "Right now I'm still committed to Tennessee, but we'll see what happens."

"I'm from Texas. Texas has big interest in my book," Santos said. "We're going to think about it, get down there and check it out, and see how it goes."

"Really, Texas is Texas. If it was just about being close, Arkansas would be there, Texas A&M, schools like that," Santos said. "There's just something about that place (Texas)."

"I played with a bunch of guys up there in the Under Armour game - like Malcom Brown, Peter Jinkens. We just clicked," Santos said.

"I grew up in a family that's Texas Longhorn fans to the end," Santos said. "Growing up a Texas fan, that helps them out a ton. We'll just have to see."

Update on DE Torshiro Davis...Bo Davis, Manny Diaz and Mack Brown will be traveling to Shreveport on Wednesday for their in-home visit. Torshiro just returned from his official visit to LSU this weekend but he surprisingly wasn't as positive with his reviews as you would think he'd be. He's always been a low-key guy so there's probably not much to it. Either way he'll likely end up at LSU when all is said and done and I'm happy UT will give it one more go.

Hook 'Em 24/7 was discussing this very thing when it comes to Diaz's schemes. Talked about how much he likes having guys such as Edmond and Santos in the middle because of their big frames, ability to penetrate the OL and the fact they'll hit you in the mouth. They're good for forcing offenses to go outside where OLBs like Hicks, Cobbs, etc. can track you down with their speed.

I can't remember Diaz's exact quote but it was something like, "we're always preparing this year's team for next year." Basically saying he's big on playing his second string guys as much as possible for several reasons. Safe bet that Santos sees a good amount of time next year outside of injury.

Welcome.. I'm pretty new as well. Damn good Stuff going On here. But I can see him at DE or like a hybrid. I like the philosophy of getting the most talented players on the field anyway u can, but I get most excited imagining him at the linebacker spot reading plays and attacking! it's looking good but I hope we seal the deal with him. This is something to be excited about considering so much negative news we've been getting lately.

I totally agree! Edwards already threw us to the curb (and suprisingly, I am not all that upset about it) and the DGB sweepstakes seem to have my most attention. I still feel that it is an Arky / Texas battle to the end because let's face it, helicopters just don't have nothing to do with foooooosball.
