recruiting chat on hornsnation. in a nutshell it is just question after question if we will land edwards/dgb. was interesting - i submitted question about the QB for 2012 and he seems to think early edge may go to swoopes. and yes i did ask him to predict where edwards/dgb end up like everybody else.

Dave (Norman): What is going on with all the players leaving OU?
David Ubben: I don't know for sure. This is well above normal attrition. Definitely troubling. Definitely something to be seriously concerned about. Could be a cleanse of guys that shouldn't be in the program, but they're going to be very low on depth next year.

Ish Wilson sounds like more a psycho than a bad kid. When's the last time Texas had a player that scared the hell out of anybody on the OL? Maybe Walter is that guy now. We need mean SOBs on the OL. I don't see the issue with Wilson if his grades are there and he doesn't have a criminal background.

**Update on JUCO QB Bo Wallace...he currently has plans to visit Baylor on January 4th and Texas Tech on January 6th. There still isn't much communication with Texas but Wallace's coach told him he thought someone on the staff could be coming by the school soon.
**More on ATH Daniel Brooks...per Hook 'Em 24/7, he's already taken an official visit to another school. He was in Stillwater last weekend to check out OSU. There remains talk that UT could flip his commitment if they would show a renewed interest, but nothing has been reported as of today.

I don't know how far this thing will go or if anything will ever become public knowledge, but I believe one of the main issues (if not the main issue) is the OU staff's treatment of injured players.

I saw that on Bo Wallace, Ketchum covers his ass about a dozen times in less than 8 sentences. Texas maybe, might, could take a look at Bo Wallace. You know Ketch will claim he broke the story if Texas seriously pursues Wallace. You stay golden Pluckers Boy.
I think Brooks might be in the one phone call and he's a Texas commitment category along with Daje Johnson.

“I’m probably rooming with Donald (Hawkins). We were on our visit together and get along real well,” he said.

Recent quotes from TE Vincent Hobbs on his future official visit to UT:
"It feels good. It feels like I'm finally doing what I've always wanted to do," Hobbs said of the recruiting attention. "Big time colleges are coming at me with visits and offers. I'm not going to get big headed about it. I'm going to weigh my options and hope to make the right choice at the end."
"My head coach, coach (Rodney) Webb, came to the game and was talking to them the whole time," he said Monday night. "After the game I didn't talk to them and all that good stuff, but I just got off the phone with coach Chambers about five minutes ago and he said he's going to put me on an official visit for the 20th. That's the official date."
"He did say if there wasn't really interest they wouldn't just bring me in," Hobbs said.
"I think they (Texas) fit in pretty good. We talk and I asked [coach Chambers] about me playing as a freshman and about where I fit in and stuff like that. He told me me playing as a freshman will depend on how I work and my work ethic and he said there's a pretty good chance," he said. "You know the way things are going I think they fit in pretty well. I'm really interested. They could be a school I could end up committing to if they offer."

interesting excerpt -
"Some recruiting notes, as Recruitocosm first reported, Texas recruits on the KSU visit and independently during the banquet claim that Texas leads for 5 star recruits Dorial Green-Beckham and Mario Edwards, Jr. While Recruitocosm feels the recruitment outcomes of these talented prospects are probably 60% and 75% respectively for the good guys, fellow commits Connor Brewer and Camhron Hughes feel the Longhorns rate to be 80% favorites to land the services of each difference making prospect. So, with that, who are we to quibble?"

Some good 2013 news...DT Justin Manning of Dallas Kimball is likely to be considered the top in-state defender for next year's class and will have his pick of colleges. There have been several different rumors reported about his school preference since this past summer; he's an OU lock because his brother played there, he loves LSU, he likes A&M over UT, etc. Well, Darrell Wyatt and Bo Davis went by his school recently and talked for about an hour and invited him to campus for Junior Days in February where he'll surely be the first DT offered. According to OrangeBloods via one of Manning's teammates, he basically said that all of these offers rolling in are nice, but UT is where his heart is. That's the first time something like that has been reported about Manning so it sounds like Texas is making a strong push. Very good news.

2013 ATH Ricky Seals-Jones and 2013 OL/DL Jake Raulerson have both said they will be making a trip to Austin for Junior Days once they get an official invite from the staff. These two have always been my top candidates for the first offer of the 2013 class. However, the one thing you can bank on is the first offer going out to someone who will commit on the spot.

The Manning news is very interesting. Texas has an embarrassment of riches at DT, but there's always room for the best one in the state.
I see RSJ listed as an athlete, it would be a mistake to not keep him on offense. Texas needs a difference maker at TE, RSJ has the best chance to be that guy in quite some time. This position has been painfully shallow in state for awhile. It might be time for Texas to look OOS for TEs. I heard there's a few good ones in California Coach Chambers.

Per Hook 'Em 24/7 this morning, UT could be targeting another OU commitment that's ready to start looking around. No names have been made public but there are several options that could make sense for Texas. DB DeVante Harris of Mesquite Horn is my guess. The rumors of OU's secondary coach, Willie Martinez, leaving the program after their bowl game and UT's pursuit of Harris' high school teammate, TE Vincent Hobbs, are two things that could help the Longhorns should they decide to offer Harris.

A text that Harris sent out to different reporters today. There are some seperate rumors out there that certain college coaches have been asking about him lately, but not sure if it's anything out of the norm:
"Reporters, I am NOT opening back up my recruitment. I don't know where y'all heard that from, but it wasn't from this De'Vante Harris. I AM NOT opening up my recruitment."

I would remind everyone that Raulerson already has relationships with many of the state's top junior recruits from the camp circuit. Getting Raulerson early could give the Junior Days much needed momentum. The coaches can tell Jake who they want and he can start recruiting them, much like Brewer did with the 2013 class.
I don't fear the Florida connection at this point. There's too much smoke around Raulerson and Texas for Florida to be a true rival for his signature. I'm not sure if Texas can get Raulerson before the Junior Day, but he has gotten many of visits out of the way already.
I think TAMU would be the only "major" school to offer Raulerson and his brother Josh. Per Tipsy's interview with Jake, Josh has heard from and likes SMU. If SMU takes care of Josh, that should sever the package deal. I don't think Jake and Josh are package deals, but I'm sure it would be a load off to Jake to see his brother get a college scholarship.
The most interesting Raulerson connection to me is with Christian Morgan. Raulerson and Morgan are very tight. Morgan could finally be complete TE that Texas has been looking for. Size, blocking ability and hands. If Texas gets Morgan they can get 2013 PCA OLB / DE Mike Mitchell. There's not much film on Mitchell out there, but he might the most athletically gifted juniors in Texas. He has a 40'' vertical.
And oh yeah, Mike Mitchell's brother is 2015 PCA SF Mickey Mitchell, widely regarded as a top 5 freshman basketball player in the country. Texas football and hoops could do themselves a big favor and tap the PCA pipeline.
Texas is looking really good with the 2013 class. The always cautious Hook Em 247 gave Texas a 60% shot of landing Manning at the first Junior Day. Out freaking standing.

I saw that Floss. I love Harris' game, but his size is a bit concerning. He plays like a grown ass man, but he will struggle to add and keep weight on at the next level.
Based on need alone, my guesses for the mystery OU recruit is Baltimore, MD DE Charles Tapper or Tallahassee, FL TE Laith Harlow. I'm not very familiar with Tapper, but I like Harlow's game quite a bit.

I can't remember where I read it, but I know that one of the reasons Raulerson has made so many college visits and participated in several camps before his senior year is because he wanted to let Texas know where he was come February 2012 once UT offers. I'm liking where things are headed right now and it'd be pretty big to start off 2013 with Raulerson.

RE Raulerson: I read something similar. Few recruits will be as educated as Raulerson when he's ready to make a decision.
RE Harlow: I think that would be a good problem to have. Taylor McNamara allegedly has OU in his final 2. I can understand Harlow looking around.

Well if he goes to Oregon, he will fit right in with all the other dumbasses that chip Kelly recruits.

Quarterbacks jumping in, out of the Big 12 (http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/42527/quarterbacks-jumping-in-out-of-the-big-12)

"Texas Tech's Jacob Karam -- last seen executing the sneakiest trick play of the season -- announced his transfer on Nov. 30 and started shopping around. He's a redshirt sophomore but already completed his undergraduate requirements, meaning he'll be eligible immediately at his new home with two years left to play. Rumors swirled that he could land at Texas, but he says he's not considering any Big 12 teams.
"I am focusing on Houston, Memphis and UTEP because those three schools are focusing on me," Karam told Fox 28 in Houston.
Karam said he also heard from LSU, San Diego State, Ole Miss, UNLV and Texas State.
Even if Texas doesn't intend on bringing in another QB, I expect the rumors to pick up a bunch after the Holiday Bowl is over. With that said, I assume the staff will want to have a solid answer pretty quickly on McCoy's intentions going forward.

Don't know exactly what is going on or how legit it is but I was just reading Thomas Johnson and Dontre Wilson's tweets and they seemed to be pretty high tweeting about going to Oregon. This just happened around 3 am.
I'm sure they'll be a lot of talk about this when i wake up around noon. Looks like we have our first decommitment. TJ did mention that he wanted to take an official visit just to make sure. I'd hate to lose this guy, think that he might be our best current WR in the 2012 class.
So I heard about Dontre Wilson's interest in Oregon but this is the first time i heard a school's name directly related to Thomas Johnson. I hope they arent being overwhelmed by the flashiness of Oregon. Nike uniforms arent gonna replace being closer to home were family and friends are easily accessible. Just ask Leach Seastruck. Now, im not saying that its such a bad thing to leave far from home to attend school, but kids should make sure that its for all the right reasons and its been thoroughly thought through . All im saying is if they sincerely like every aspect of the school then fine but going for uniform combinations isnt very wise. And speaking of Leach, whats going on with the investigation of his recruitment? Will Oregon receive sanctions? I havent heard much about it for some months.

Just for the record, my "c'mon man" was directed towards TJ for talking about weed online whether it's just song lyrics or he was actually smoking weed. It was just dumb all around by him. He's a good example why most schools do all kinds of etiquette and media relations training with their incoming freshmen.

Geez, I didn't realize this until now. Florida State has 6 commits (including Mario Edwards) in the UA Game. Of course Texas has more at 9 commits, but I don't like Edwards around so many future Seminoles. The other 5 FSU commits are all from Florida or Alabama.
Of course Connor Brewer and J Gray will be at the UA Game. Gray and Edwards are said to be pretty close friends.
I actually feel better about DGB at Army All American Game because Arkansas doesn't have a single commit in the game and it's in San Antonio. DGB and Tim Cole's personalities are a good match, and Camrhon Hughes and DGB appear to be friendly.

BTW, mid week bowl games suck, especially when Texas is playing in one. Tomorrow morning at work is going to be rough.
Enjoy tonight fellas, Texas won't play another game for over 9 months and it's against Wyoming.

If the FSU guys are on the opposite team, he'll spend a lot more time with the UT commitments. That'll help.
Speaking of next year's schedule, the Ole Miss game is officially on.
I've seen different things on which team Edwards will be on. If it's regional, he'll obviously be on the same team as the Texas commits.
Good news on the Ole Miss game. That's a game I might try to go to.

I'm purely guessing but I think they can spend downtime with whoever they want and they stay in the same hotel, but he probably won't talk to them much at all during team stuff unless they do something like BFLT mentioned above. Really fellas no thoughts on the game? It must still be early.
Here's what I saw:
* Texas has some bad mamba jambas on defense. Joey Harrington said before the game that they were in the conversation as Alabama and LSU's defenses. While I disagree, I think Texas can get there next year. With all the youth on defense they had some inconsistent games this year, namely Baylor and OU.
* Replacing Acho and Robinson is going to be tough. Steve Edmond is extremely talented and played well this year, but I would have liked to see him play more this season. He will be counted on as the starting MLB next year. I feel pretty good about Cobbs replacing Acho. Different kind of players, but I think Cobbs has the heart and athleticism is be very successful. There is also some good talent behind him at OLB. Just a gut feeling, but I think Tevin Jackson spells Edmond at MLB next season.
* Jordan Hicks was finally healthy last night and it showed. He should lead the LB corps next year. His final 2 seasons at Texas should spectacular if he stays out of the trainers' room. Cobbs and Hicks coming off the edge is frightening.
* Texas has 2 All American DEs next season. Okafor already got his, and Jackson should be a preseason All American. If Mario Edwards is wondering what his development might at Texas might look like, look no further than Oak and Jackson. If Texas can get anything out of Ced Reed and Reggie Wilson next year, watch out. I think there's a window for Edwards to get into the DE rotation right away.
* The secondary was again awesome. Imagine a junior Byndom, sophomore Diggs, junior Phillips and senior Vaccaro starting next year with M. Thompson, Josh Turner, Evans and Scott rotating in. Salty. I think Echols plays next year. He won't make mistakes and is technically sound. Duke Thomas is said to balling at corner on the all star game circuit. Replacing Gideon with Phillips makes this secondary instantly better, getting Vaccaro back makes it sick.
* The DT rotation should be filthy. Even the forgotten man, Calvin Howell had a big game against. I think Moore starts because of his size, but Texas could go 8 deep at DT next year. I expect Malcom Brown to be a regular by the end of the season. Whaley is a killer. So disruptive, always makes something happen on 3rd down. Mack got a playmaker, just not where he expected.
* I have some concerns about the OL. They couldn't create a new LOS. There were some nice runs at the end of the game, but the push wasn't there. It starts with Dom Espinosa. Searels has some decisions to make with the addition of Donald Hawkins. With Hopkins moving back inside, as we all assume he will, I think he should get an audition at center. Mack and Stacy have both said publicly that Hopkins can play all 5 positions. Espinosa just isn't getting it done. Hopkins could play center and Flower, who had a great 13 practices before the bowl, could excel at LG. Cochran at LT, Hawkins at RT, Hopkins at C, Walters at RG, and Flowers at LG is my best 5 going into the spring.
* I think Darius James is a 4 year starter at Texas. A center with elite athleticism and NFL upside. When was the last time Texas had that? Quietly the most important recruit in the 2013 class. Texas can build around him.
*I would liked to seen more Bergeron, but I think it was a flow of the game kind of decision. Malcolm had some runs when he got a crease. Both should buckle it up next year because Johnathan Gray is coming for their carries. Best RB rotation Texas has had in a long time.
* I was encouraged with what I saw out of Ash. The long TD pass to Goodwin is something Texas can point to with DGB. Texas isn't Arkansas, but their QB is getting better. Ash sleeps, eats, and breathes football and Jesus. Give him the starter's reps in the spring, summer and fall camp and I think he'll progress and improve. The jump passes / passes off his back foot are maddening, but he didn't throw 1 pass in 23 attempts that could have been easily picked off. Harsin really needs to work with him on getting his feet and shoulders behind throws. The long pass to Goodwin shows what kind of arm he has.
* I know Goodwin has Olympic aspirations, but I wish he'd give football a chance year round. Wow he had some flashes last night. The long run that set up the TD, and the long TD catch. The guy has another gear. Two excellent games in a row. I think he's Texas home run threat right now.
* I thought about Kendall Sanders immediately after the Goodwin run. He should be lethal on jet sweeps and reverses. He doesn't have the speed that Goodwin has, but he has a lot more shake.
* Jaxon Shipley has the most amazing stat line I have ever seen. 4 completions. 4 attempts. 3 TDs and a game clincher. Incredible. Should only get better next year. I'd remind everyone that this will be his first full off season with Bennie.
* DJ Grant was moving really well last night. He should only get healthier this off season. I still don't like his blocking acumen, but he can stretch the field.
*A good send off for Irby. He probably score if it's a better throw. 3 TDs and setting up a TD in his final 4 games is pretty darn good. Have a great life after football Blaine.
I think the defensive coaches should take the game film, unedited, and send it to their defensive targets. Edwards has to like what he saw. Texas has 2 upperclassmen All Americans at DE. What does FSU have at the position?
The 2013 recruits have to like what they saw from Manny Diaz's defense. Once Manny gets his roots down and forms relationships with Texas high school coaches, I think he'll become the defensive pied piper.
I think Texas needed a good game from Ash to sell to DGB. With Dorial, it's about more than the football side of things, but if he thinks Ash is competent that could go a long way. Texas has the advantage over Arkansas in everything except for distance and QB play. Maybe they closed the gap a little on the latter.
Bowl wins are obviously about momentum going into the next season. Texas got that, plus a defensive highlight reel to show to recruits.
I think this team can win the Big 12 next year. I have a feeling OU will be down, regardless of what Landry Jones does. RGIII needs to go pro, and the conference is wide open.

I don't think Espinosa is that shitty, I think Tipoti is a beast. Dom got abused like a little bitch, but he hasnt played that bad all year.
Like I said earlier about Ash, people kind of gave him a bad rap because of what happened before him with Gilbert, but they are different players. Ash is a relentless worker that will do whatever it takes to get better, the thing that impresses me most about him is that hes a tough SOB, took some big shots all year and never flinched. Gilbert was entitled and just never showed the rest of the guys he could lead. With another offseason with Harsin to polish his skills, and learn the offense he is going to be way better.

regarding recruiting, mario edwards must love to think about how he would be used in that defense. i love our chances. now as for DGB, i feel completely the opposite. the Oline looked awful and was dominated by a moderate Cal defense. yes the Oline is young, but regardless it was a dissapointing performance because they were pushed around - and let's face it, this is Cal. Ash also didn't look great either - as a top WR recruit i would be concerned if he could help me get stats to highlight my talents long-term. i sure hope brewer is ready to push him for playing time at the least next season.
one thing i will say about QB play, if ash plays all games like this next year (marginal play, but doesn't turn ball over), that would be enough to win a lot of games. three and outs and constant punting is fine with how good our defense is as long as we make them drive the field. we just need a bus driver that doesn't turn ball over and we will be 10-win team.

I've seen you lurking, sir. Post more.
I tend to lean towards your line of thinking even though I struggle with who I'd take if it were up to me. I read a report recently that caught my eye. Even though Barrett is clearly the more polished prospect right now, Swoopes may have both the higher ceiling and the higher floor. Since he's only 16 or 17 years old, you're obviously looking more at what he can become rather than where he currently sits. 6'5"/225 lb. guys that are faster than most everyone on the field on any given day just don't come around often. I think the biggest knock on him is his accuracy since Whitewright doesn't throw a whole lot, but his arm strength doesn't appear to be an issue. Tough decisions to come and the next few weeks should be pretty badass closing 2012 and beginning 2013. Lots of good momentum coming off of the Holiday Bowl.

For those of you that have participated in this thread long enough, you know that DB Landon Collins has been a pure longshot for a while. Anyway, this one is officially over for UT now because he will be making his college decision at the 2012 Under Armour All-American Game next Thursday. That's always been his plan because that day is his birthday.

I saw that Barrett measured 6 foot and 7/8ths of an inch and 209 pounds. I'm not saying that's small, but it's smaller than expected.
If Barrett and Swoopes are both projects at the end of the day, give me Swoopes because of his upside.
That said, Texas needs to protect itself,if the coaches take Swoopes as a project, and that's exactly what he is, they have to take a polished QB recruit also. Cody Thomas is a guy that has been mentioned as drawing some interest from Texas.

Per Hook 'Em 24/7, a second big-time 2013 prospect has confirmed for the first Junior Day on February 12th. ATH Ricky Seals-Jones (I say "ATH" because nobody is sure what position he'll play) has said Oscar Giles extended an invitation recently and he plans on being in Austin soon.
It's pretty simple to me. If RSJ is a difference maker at TE or DE, you keep him on offense because there's more of a need there. Texas hasn't had a TE with RSJ's athleticism and size since J Mike.

I think this is what shyne is referring to. White was rooming with Davis before he left and it just wasn't good for him. Hopefully he gets it together because the incoming WRs will pass him quickly (especially if UT lands DGB).

Mike Davis has a lot of football left, but the head case label is starting to follow him around. I hope he gets it straightened out.

Yeah, that would be the only hesitation with taking Swoopes. Of course,
if our current stable of QB's was actually stable then there is a little more comfort in making him our QB target for 2013.

Exactly. Mack and the previous staff members have left little margin for error at the QB position. I've said before that it's almost impossible for a team like Texas to be in such a bad spot. Too many poor decisions.

OU doesn't impress Edwards
Among the first Under Armour All-Americans through the registration room on Saturday, defensive end Mario Edwards offered a newsy update on his recruiting.
Edwards, No. 1 in the ESPNU150 out of Billy Ryan High School in Denton, Texas, said he soured on Oklahoma after a mid-December visit.
"Talking to some of the (current OU) players, no one had a lot of positive things to say about OU," Edwards said. "It was more, like, negative."
Additionally, Edwards said, he wasn't thrilled with the "vibe" of Norman.
"It was a real small town with really no social life there," he said. "After football season, you want to be somewhere you can socialize and all that stuff."
Before the visit to OU, he made a trip to Texas. It went surprisingly well, said Edwards, whose high school teammate, linebacker Alex De La Torre, is among the Longhorns' top-rated class of pledges.
"I thought (Austin) would be an old, country place," he said. "I went there and had a real nice time."
Edwards, committed to Florida State since March, plans a visit to Tallahassee on Jan. 14, he said, and a trip to LSU on Jan. 20.
He spoke highly of both schools. Of the Seminoles, Edwards said, in particular the Tigers and defensive line coach Brick Haley.
"He's been showing me the different packages," Edwards said, "how I can fit and come in and be an impact player."
Edwards said he plans to unveil his final decision on signing day.

Junior Day confirmations continue to roll in. 2013 OL Kent Perkins has said he'll be there and he's down to two schools; Texas and Texas A&M. See some quotes from him below. I think UT picks him up rather quickly once he's offered:
“It's pretty much Texas and Texas A&M for me,” Perkins said. “There are some other schools that are good, but I've visited both schools already and feel like I'd fit in the best at one of those two schools.”
“I think I really do like Texas a lot,” Perkins said. “They have everything that I need to be a successful student athlete there.”
“I like how they finished games,” Perkins said. “I saw a team that played tough and might have struggled in the first half of games, but they finished strong and they're always a top program.”
“The last time he was here he told my coaches to make sure I knew when the junior day was and to find out if I'll be there, and I'll be there,” Perkins said. “I like Coach Searels. Just the little I've gotten to know him, I like him.”
“With the Texas team, it's like the Dallas Cowboys,” Perkins said. “Growing up in Texas, it's something you just do.”

Here are the recent quotes from Edwards:
“I think it's down to three,” said Edwards, with those three schools being Florida State, LSU and Texas.
“I'll have my decision made by signing day,” he added. “After the visit to LSU, I'll have a couple of days to feel everything out and examine everything and see how it turns out.”
“I'm still verbally committed to FSU,” Edwards said. “But I did like (the visit to) Texas. (The visit to) OU, I wasn't too fond of. It's going to depend on how these last two visits go.”
“I can say Texas and maybe Florida State are in there right now,” Edwards said. “We'll see after these visits.”
“I never really just gave Texas an opportunity,” Edwards said. “I figured because it's Texas, and the Longhorns, and Austin that it would be a country town, but it's not. It's the Capital. There's a lot of things going on down there that are just really fun."
“The strength and conditioning program was great,” Edwards added about what impressed him on the visit. “It's somewhere where I can get my degree in about three years, so that stood out to me.”
“The ends stand up, the ends are down (in UT's defensive scheme). They could have four ends on the field at the same time,” Edwards said. “They can move me down to nose tackle but still have four ends on the field, which is cool. So really they just use their ends in a lot of ways is what I learned.”
“I talk to Mack Brown and Coach (Oscar) Giles,” Edwards said. “With LSU, I talk with Coach (Brick) Haley. With FSU, it's mostly Coach (Darin) Eliot.”
“Just somewhere where I can fit in and go be a big part of the program,” Edwards said. “Somewhere to go and get my degree that makes me feel comfortable, and after football somewhere where I want to be happy.”

More drama with WR Thomas Johnson...still tons of conflicting reports on him out there, but here's a direct quote from Hook 'Em 24/7:
"Let people out there know that I am committed to Texas. I'm going to take my visits."
The report goes on to say that he's scheduled a visit to Oregon on January 21st. He's supposedly talked all of this out with the staff recently and unless they've given him permission to make that visit, I don't see how that date makes any sense. January 21st is the same day he's supposed to officially visit Austin with the rest of the UT commitments that couldn't make it in over banquet weekend because of playoffs. So, either he has the staff's permission to visit Oregon, has some brass balls and is willing to chance an official visit to another school knowing his UT offer could be pulled, he simply doesn't care either way or he won't end up going to Oregon at all. Pretty difficult to tell exactly what's going on but that's the latest.

Blue chip DE Mario Edwards told Inside Texas he has a new top 3. Texas, LSU & FSU in that order.
yeah, great stuff from IT -
------------------------
I’ve got it narrowed to a few schools,” said Edwards. “Right now I’m looking at Texas, Florida State and LSU. Those are my top three. You could say that I'm still a soft commit to Florida State though. I haven't officially decomitted or anything yet.”
The question is, in what order are those top three?
“Texas is my number one,” Edwards said. “They are followed by LSU and then Florida State. I will visit FSU on January 14th and LSU on January 20th. I'm going to make my decision on National Signing Day.”
Obviously, that’s great news for the Longhorns. The Denton product said that Texas recently jumped in the lead after he took an official visit to Austin in early December.
“It was a great time down in Austin," Edwards told Inside Texas. "I went down there and got to chill with my teammate, Alex De La Torre. He and I had a good time down there, going out and seeing everything. Hanging with their recruiting class was real fun. Plus we got to talk with their current players, see how they interact with the coaches and how their practices go."
Speaking of the coaches, Edwards says that’s another reason that he is now hooked on the Horns.
“I like the whole staff,” he explained. “I really like Coach (Manny) Diaz and the way he runs his defense. I love what he does with his defensive ends, dropping them in coverage, rushing the passer, attacking with them standing up and just using them to their full potential. Coach (Oscar) Giles is great too. He's an excellent coach.”

Some recent quotes from DE Hassan Ridgeway at the Army Bowl. He's being sarcastic when asked about recruiting for UT:
"I'm very excited to play with all the other athletes out here," Ridgeway told Orangebloods.com as he checked in to officially begin the Army All-American festivities. "It's a great opportunity. I just [want to] show everyone what I can do. Overall, just want to go out and be me on the field."
"I don't know (if I will recruit for UT at the Army Bowl). I've got no one in mind," stated Ridgeway with a big smile on his face. "Yeah, on my official I did that (with Denton Ryan defensive end Mario Edwards Jr.). Yeah, I thought he might have committed then but wanted to check a couple more schools out."
"I liked watching the defense (in the Holiday Bowl)," said the defensive end with a big grin, a type of grin from a guy that likes to get after the quarterback. "I liked that a lot."
"Just going back down there (on his official visit), looking at it, seeing it and just saying, 'This is what I want to do and there is where I want to go.' Just players. That's what initially did it and that's what did it again," responded Ridgeway when asked what locked him into the Longhorns. "They've always got great players."

Quotes from LB Tim Cole at the Army Bowl:
"I'm finally here," said the Texas commit. "I've been waiting for this for a while. I'm just ready to showcase myself. I'm just out here to get better and have fun."
"I'm not nervous at all," Cole stated. "I'm not trying to make this game bigger than what it is. It's an honor to be in this game. I just want to go out there and have fun and do what I've been doing all my life."
"Dorial Green-Beckham," responded Cole when asked who he would be recruiting for the Longhorns. "Oh yeah. [I'm] trying to get him to come to Austin. I'm one of those more vocal recruiting types."
"I'm ready to get out on that practice field and hit people," stated the senior.

Some Under Armour practice footage is on ESPNU right now for anyone that's home today.
Damn, I turned on right when they were interviewing Mario Edwards, and just caught last few seconds where he was talking about Texas. Was a long sit down interview, he really seemed well presented. The part I caught he was mentioning how he liked 'family atmosphere' and how they use the defensive line players creatively, but those were only 1-2 sentences I caught. Too bad I just missed his other comments but maybe they will post to ESPN later.

And from article on ESPN some funny quotes on guys going after Edwards:
espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story/_/id/7415770/texas-commits-having-ball-together-armour-all-america-game
"I am working real hard on Mario," Norman said. "I am trying to make sure we get him. I am also working on that dude [Noah] Spence [Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt]. He's a baller."
Spence has already made his pledge to Urban Meyer and Ohio State, and he's not budging. But it's a different story for Edwards. He's committed to Florida State, but there certainly has been some serious talk that he could flip to another school -- and Texas is in that discussion.
"We have to get Mario," Brewer said. "He's from Texas and he's hanging out with everyone from Texas. It would be a good spot for him, and to be honest, I think Texas is in good shape with him."

HUGE (and almost unbelievable) news. Just fantastic all the way around. Mack and Harsin aren't f***ing around on this one. Harsin called Wallace tonight and wants him in Austin by this weekend. He's set to visit Indiana tomorrow and then he'll make his way to Baylor shortly after that. It's looking like Saturday could be his official visit to Texas, but he and Harsin will discuss plans in more detail tomorrow. All you need to know is he's been waiting on this call and he's said UT has "moved straight to the top" of his list. The Horns may have their JUCO QB in less than a week. This news tells us a few things:
1.) Mack wants to win NOW
2.) McCoy is most likely gone
3.) Brewer and Overstreet will get their much needed redshirts
For those that don't remember, Wallace is the JUCO teammate of DT Brandon Moore so he already has a connection with UT. Both guys helped East Mississippi CC to the NJCAA national title this season. Wallace set NJCAA single season records for total offense (4,810 yards), passing yards (4,604 yards) and most TDs thrown (53). He's also had four games of at least seven TDs.

Things are still looking really good with WR Dorial Green-Beckham. He's had the opportunity to spend a good amount of time with UT commitments in San Antonio (there are ZERO Arkansas guys at the Army Bowl and one of the UT guys said "we'll get him!") and he's looking to cut his list down to three schools when he gets home to Springfield. We've thought this for the past week or two, but OU looks like they're on the outside looking in at this point. He's been saying he wouldn't take any more official visits for a few days now, but he mentioned this evening that he would be visiting Arkansas after all. Some recent quotes from DGB:
“It depends on how I feel at that point about where I'm going,” Green-Beckham said. “If there's a school further away from home that I really like, then I'd have to sit down with my family and really see where we go from there if that school is the best place for me.”
“For my first time being down there and just knowing everything I knew about Texas and all of the great athletes they have, and the great coaches, and the great people, it was just a tremendous experience,” Green-Beckham said. “I just couldn't believe how well the people treated me when I was there. It made for a great atmosphere. It lived up to everything I thought it would be.”
“If I chose Texas, then I feel like I'd be able to do what the coaches want me to do,” Green-Beckham said. “I feel like the Texas coaches want me to fill a specific role in the offense. I'd be running the routes that I like to run and I'd be able to do what I do best to help the team. I'd be able to catch a lot of balls and help them out.”
“My relationship with him is one that's very close,” Green-Beckham said. “He's a really good receivers coach and I know he's put a lot of guys in the NFL.”
“Coach Brown is great,” Green-Beckham said. “He's a great coach and there's a reason his program is successful.”
“I've seen it (the photo from K-State weekend with all of the UT guys),” Green-Beckham said. “When I talked to those guys, they weren't 100 percent sure they were going to commit, but they loved it at Texas. When Donald (Hawkins) committed, he sent me a text that first day saying that I needed to come join him.”
“We joked about it because he was my roommate when we had our visit,” Green-Beckham said. “We had a good time and he let me know that I should join him down there. We got really close on the visit.”
“They've (the UT commitments) been pretty chill with me so far,” Green-Beckham said. “I really respect that. They're good guys and they've just kind of given me my space and given me time to make my decision and that's something I really appreciate.”

Excellent news. Longtime lurker here. Ash in my opinion just doesn't have the decision making, and his high school stats reflect that. Decision making isn't something that is likely to improve that greatly either. McCoy just has a worse arm than me, and that isn't likely to ever get up to a serviceable level, which is depressing.
So give me a JUCO please! If we offer Bo I suppose that means that McCoy is gone as Tfloss said.

One more update from Hook 'Em 24/7. OL/DL Arik Armstead is still talking about taking an official visit to Texas. He was going to use his final official visit for Auburn later on this month, but they are supposedly now out of the race. The only issue is there hasn't been any contact with the staff since they were trying to plan a trip for banquet weekend in early December. There is a brief contact period that started today and will run through this Sunday in which the staff could decide to make a move. If the Armsteads visit Austin, it will probably be next Tuesday or Wednesday after the Army Bowl comes to an end. What's pretty cool about all of this is Armstead's father is the one pushing the visit the hardest (I believe he is a native Texan). If the UT staff doesn't put in a call or visit Armstead in San Antonio this weekend, they'll probably go straight home to California.

He seems like a guy that is just interested in the hype, buzz and collecting offers. He is a great talent, but I don't think there is any real smoke there. Just my personal opinion. We only take 1 or 2 OOS guys a year and if we take DGB and Connor we are already about to max out. We pursued several other guys besides them hard too (Peat, Theus, Agholor). I just don't think there is any chance he comes to the 40.

Definitely a slim chance considering he wants to enroll in college early. He needs to make a decision in the next week or two if that's the case. The West Coast schools have the advantage for sure. My biggest thing is the staff going balls out no matter what. I really like the effort they're putting in with other big names, so we'll see if Armstead gets a call.

"The whole situation, being Texas, they go straight to the top. If I'm coming on a visit, I'm really excited about it."
"I'm just a competitor. Going back to high school, I've been lucky enough to win a lot of games," Wallace said. "I consider myself a winner. We had good stats this year but it wasn't' about the numbers. It was about winning games and winning a championship, and that's what I plan to do wherever I go."
"It's Texas. It's one of the biggest programs in college football," Wallace said. "Growing up, watching Colt, VY (Vince Young), even back to Simms, I've always watched Texas when they're on TV. I like their whole program."

Huge. Earthquake, seismic shock waves throughout Texas huge. Texas wants to win now. Right now. I do think Mack approved bringing Bo Wallace in, but he's allowing his coaches to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.
I'm not sure what happened, if Mack got a push or if he's doing the pushing, but this playing for 2013 BS gets buried if / when Wallace enrolls at Texas.
Texas is a QB away from winning the Big 12 next year. I think everyone on the Texas staff understands that.
I think bringing in Wallace (should he sign with Texas) does a few things:
1) He will push Ash. Ash was asked to be a game manager against Cal, now he might be asked to be a complete quarterback with Wallace pushing him.
2) It stabilizes the QB position. Texas should be able to count on 3 more years with Ash, and 3 more years with Wallace. That's two veteran QBs in the program. When was the last time Texas had that necessity? VY and Nordgren are the most recent.
3) It will allow Brewer to redshirt. No more burning Brewer's shirt in case of emergency. He'll sit and develop. Thank goodness.
4) It allows Texas to roll the dice with Swoopes. This could change the Barrett vs. Swoopes dynamic. Ash and Wallace will have 2 more years of eligibility left when the 2013 QB reports. If Texas goes with Swoopes, he would have at least 2 years develop in the program. He shouldn't be asked to play right away. I feel comfortable giving Harsin at least 2 years to get Swoopes ready. If Texas signs Wallace, I'm officially in the Swoopes Camp to stay.
5) Don Draper once said, "If you don't like what is being said, change the conversation." Thomas Johnson and DGB are hearing negative recruiting every single day about Texas' QBs. How many of those schools will be able to say that they have a First Team All American JUCO QB coming in with the 2012 class? Bo Wallace isn't Darron Thomas or Tyler Wilson, but again it changes the conversation.
I like Texas' chances with Wallace. Ole Miss is interested, MS State just offered, Wallace will visit Indiana and Baylor before he visits Texas. Not the stiffest competition. Wallace needs to make a quick decision because he intends to be a spring enrollee. Should he visit Texas this weekend, he'll have about a week to decide. I believe Texas' spring enrollment deadline is January 15th.
Did I mention this ground breaking? Go get him Harsin.

Just a gut feeling, but I think Akina sticks with it and goes hard after Harris. I think it's different than the Agholor situation because Agholor has made it quite clear that he wants to play WR. If Texas couldn't at least keep the door cracked for Agholor to play DB, I can understand punting on him. Plus, Texas landed Kendall Sanders instead. I'm fine with that.
Unless there's a fast riser in state like Colbert this year, I think Akina will stay on Harris until the end.
Two visits before Harris starts the spring semester of his junior year demonstrates his sincere interest. The Harris family seems to also like Texas. I find his top 2 of FSU and Texas pretty interesting. I wouldn't like where the Florida program is right now either.

If Texas signs Wallace, I'm officially in the Swoopes Camp to stay.
Hadn't examined this angle much since I read the Wallace news, but it's a legit point. This could give Harsin the opportunity to take the better athlete that's not as developed (Swoopes) if he wanted to go that route.

Per Hook Em 247, Wallace was offered a scholarship by Coach Harsin last night. Wallace will visit Indiana this week, followed by Baylor and then Texas on Saturday. He has a visit planned to MS State next week.

My feeling is everything is all but done and the details will be ironed out on Saturday. Wallace is a spring enrollee so he'll have only a few days to make his decision should he for some odd reason decide not to commit to UT on the spot. Unless he has the urge to be thorough, I doubt the visit to Mississippi State even happens. Really great news that he can be on campus for spring ball.

Also from Hook 'Em 24/7, Mack Brown will be doing a school and in-home visit with DE Caleb Bluiett tomorrow.

That seems to be the general feeling. I agree, Wallace probably commits on Saturday.

According to his Twitter, DB Adrian Phillips will have surgery next week on the shoulder he injured at mid-season and is expected to be out four to six months. He's most likely going to miss spring ball.

That's a recurring injury for Adrian. I hope this fixes it.

More from Hook 'Em 24/7. Mack Brown stopped in Brownwood today to see DB Kevin Vaccaro and also made a trip to Mineral Wells to see DB Adrian Colbert. Off to Beaumont to see DE Caleb Bluiett tomorrow.

Wow...this is awesome. Most exciting news since Gray committed. Best of all(as Bill mentioned) Brewer is not going to have to come in and be expected to be the savior. He can ease in slowly and develop properly.

Why did Wallace go juco route? Who was he recruited by and what was he rated?

To add to that...
"Wallace earned 2011 NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2011 after leading Eastern Mississippi C.C. to a national championship, setting an NJCAA single-season records for most passing yards (4,604), total yards offense (4,810) and most touchdowns thrown (53). In the Lions' national championship game, he threw seven TD passes for the fourth time in his career. Wallace redshirted at Arkansas State in 2010 and will enroll at a Division I school in January with three years of eligibility remaining."

To give us an idea of Bo's talent, if you would assess him a star rating, as Rivals does, how many stars would he deserve?
Out of HS he was rated a 2 star, would he be rated the equivalent of a 3, 4 or 5 star?

Bo Wallace is ranked #46 in Rivals JUCO 50 (updated on 12/26/2011). The only QB. He's a 3 star per Rivals. Star rankings aren't everything, but they're a benchmark.
I'd give Wallace another star because he put those numbers in the best JUCO league in the country. Mississippi JUCOs have stocked plenty of SEC rosters.

Not sure if this has been posted but according to Ashley Brewer's twitter her brother will be the starter for his team at the UA game. Must mean he is doing pretty well there. Exciting.

What a dream come true for my brother @ConnorBrewer7. He will be the starting quarterback in tomorrow's ESPN UnderArmour All American game!
