:toast that we all know that he is going to pick Texas
:nope that he loves the attention and will announce on National TV
How do you know that's why he's making this decision?
Maybe UT recommended it to help them get a little more exposure?

I understand what you're saying. Do you like when they have press conferences at their school to announce their decision?
Do they still show the player and their families with several college hats in front of them during the game? If a player has already committed do they not even show them or interview them?

considering how UT always seems to end up developing kickass CBs, I would be perfectly happy with him playing CB as well, as long as he can tackle. With his incredible athleticism, he could create some serious havoc on the outsides.

Update on OL Donald Hawkins...Auburn's OL coach, Jeff Grimes (same guy who recruited OL Christian Westerman), visited Hawkins yesterday at his school and extended an offer. He's also trying to get him back to Auburn for an official visit in the near future. Hawkins has three official visit opportunities this weekend (nothing is set in stone): Auburn, Mississippi State and Oklahoma State. He wasn't exactly receptive to Grimes' sales pitch because Auburn is late to the party, MSU is in his home state so they're considered a realistic threat and OSU hasn't had any contact with Hawkins since before Thanksgiving so he has no travel plans for Stillwater this weekend. All signs point to Texas and Stacy Searels at the moment:
"I guess my mindset is on Texas right now," Hawkins said.

This can't be good for us. There's that connection between Manny Diaz and Mississippi St and any assistant coach in the nation would die for a head coach in the SEC.

Always a possibility but I don't think Diaz and his wife are in any rush to get back to Starkville. Very tough place to succeed amongst other things. Interested to see if he'll get offered if it opens up.

TE Gerron Ballard of Whitewright has committed to TCU. UT had him on campus over the summer for one of their camps, but there was never a high interest. This news is relevant because he's the teammate of 2013 QB Tyrone Swoopes. May not be much of a stretch to say TCU offered to get a leg up in that recruitment.

Per Hook 'Em 24/7, 2013 DB Marcell Harris of Groveland, FL has another unofficial visit to UT in the works. He'll be in San Antonio in January for the 2012 US Army All-American Bowl and the training combine that's held for all of the underclassmen. He's hoping to get to Austin while he's in Texas. Harris continues to have regular contact with Duane Akina and lists UT in his top two (sometimes his top school).

Update on JUCO DE Denico Autry...he will not be available to attend UT's team banquet because he's scheduled to visit Miami that same weekend. His East Mississippi CC team plays in the JUCO national title on Saturday in Arizona so he'd be able to focus on recruiting more after that game is complete. However, he did say he wasn't sure if he'd take any additional visits. I'm not positive but I believe Autry is a spring enrollee, so UT is running out of time with this one.

**We can add five-star DE Mario Edwards of Denton Ryan to the list of visitors for the team banquet next weekend. Floss any timetable on Hawkins? With his semester ending and his football season over, you would think recruiting is his primary focus. I'm thinking it goes down after finals. Hawkins will have a ton of interview requests should he commit to Texas.

Not sure, bud. It's confusing because there are various reports about when he'll be available to enroll. His commitment announcement will probably be in the next week or two if he's a spring enrollee as opposed to arriving on campus in June. Hopefully it goes down around the time Searels visits him at his school and they can iron out the final details.

A family member of his (some think it's MJ himself) has been trolling OrangeBloods for the better part of a year saying how much the kid loves UT and that he wants an offer badly. I liken him to Sanders in the sense that the staff already knows they have him wrapped up. He's not visiting campus for another "maybe we'll offer you." It's just a matter of the announcement.

Looks like good guesses to me. White may never make his way into the rotation with the young guns coming in and he's clearly got some issues, Hales may take his diploma and move along, I like Jackson at DB a lot better than at WR and there could be some uncertainty with Harris. I don't think his foot is healing properly. Not at all saying he'll transfer, it's just something that's been brought up. The WR recruiting heating up lately speaks volumes about what the staff thinks of the current WRs aside from Shipley.

Welcome to the thread, sir.
I think Brewer will be given a chance to win the job during the spring and fall (he is a Harsin recruit) and his redshirt status will depend on how he does and if someone else transfers out. If McCoy doesn't win the job next year and decides to leave, Brewer can't redshirt. It would be ideal if he could but that's under the assumption that Ash or McCoy establishes himself as "the man." Gilbert wasn't able to separate himself from the rest of the pack causing the QB depth chart to be shaky from the beginning of spring practice.

Consider me in the group that thinks Petersen is the prime candidate to replace Mack when he decides to hang 'em up. Sometimes I think UT hired Harsin not only because he's a great coach, but he knows Petersen's system inside and out. By the time Petersen arrives at UT, everything he's trying to achieve will have been implemented allowing for a smoother transition into his new job and continuity for the Texas program. Whatever happens I'm pretty sure Mack will hit a grand slam with his successor.

Well if Mack does retire I wish him the best and:
-Hopefully Texas can hold onto the incoming recruits.
-A replacement is found quickly if not already in place. Which will help with recruits.
-He coaches the Bowl Game.
-Also hope Texas can hang onto Harsin/Diaz. Another year changing coordinators would set the program back.
Like Shyne I have a gut feeling that it's true. Can't forget Texas recently had a HCIW in Muschamp. Texas and Mack Brown have known it's nearing the end for some time. Not winning the National Championship in 09 and last seasons debacle probably prolonged his career if anything.

There have been various reports about the past two years taking a toll on Mack so I wouldn't be completely shocked if he decided to walk away. If you watch all of the games like I do, you see a guy that looks old and tired at times no matter how much he tells the press he's motivated, having fun, etc. It simply has to come to an end at some point and just the way it goes.
I'm really not sure what to believe about his future, but I'm confident that Mack wouldn't make a retirement announcement after Baylor or before the team banquet. That would be insanely stupid from a public relations standpoint and Mack knows that as he's the ultimate people person. He's not going to do anything to burn bridges with his players, coaches, recruits, etc. He'll notify everyone when the time is right and in the correct setting when he makes a decision like that.

Here comes Aggies decommitment season in 3...2...1...
It's fun to watch all of this play out. Lots of reports that contradict each other concerning Sumlin, Smart, A&M and ASU. My only beef is with the A&M Board of Regents. Rumor going around that Sherman has been fired but he hasn't been notified. Cold-blooded way to do business if true.

Talking about Mack's future, I'm purely speculating but Petersen and the UCLA job may be the one to watch. If there continues to be lukewarm interest there with no real progress being made, it's possible that there could be quiet communication with UT. If he takes the job, that's probably a good indication that Mack will remain for a while.

It was actually harder for him to qualify in the SEC. Have to take tests in person as opposed to online (b12). Apparently, he wasn't successful. We might lose an O-Line commit because of this as well.

Two quick updates...
**Doesn't look like WR Marcus Johnson will be committing right away since he still needs to sit down with Mack Brown and do the whole song and dance to make his offer official. He will receive an in-home visit from UT next week (I'm assuming Major Applewhite) and then he'll attend the team banquet shortly after that. Good news is coming but not quite yet.
**Rumor popping up that ATH Kendall Sanders could commit to UT at, or shortly after, the team banquet. The 2012 US Army All-American Bowl announcement is still an option but he may be changing his tune a little bit. Being around all of the other UT recruits in Austin could cause him to pull the trigger.

Does anyone know if the offer to Johnson would be indicative of increasing doubt the staff may have about DGB? To me it's either that or Harsin/Wyatt are really expecting/encouraging a lot of attrition at the position in the form of Darius White and Desean Hales for starters.

I think it has to do with attrition and the lack of playmakers. All we have at WR right now is Shipley. Davis is sucking it up and Goodwin is okay but also a Junior. White will transfer, Hales might as well transfer, John Harris has been on crutches for two months so who knows what's going on with his broken foot, and it's too early for Onyegbule. We just need some playmakers.
You can tell this 2012 class is being built to be an offensive class, which is what we need the most. The 2011 class is great on both sides, this one is excellent on offense, good on defense. Together=National Championship
DGB was a long shot to begin with. I'm surprised they even got an official visit for him, but it was worth a shot. He'll probably stay closer to home.

Good to see you, Whisky.
The offer to Johnson yesterday is said to have nothing to do with how the staff feels about DGB. It's more or less about taking playmakers while they can as Pop referred to. There's a chance DGB visits campus again in January since he'll be in San Antonio for the 2012 US Army All-American Bowl and then Mack and Co. will make an in-home visit with the Beckham family shortly before National Signing Day. The Arkansas folks feel pretty confident but UT won't go down easy.

I would attribute it to numbers as well. If you take into consideration that UT has three silent commits right now (Johnson, Moore and Sanders) then you're at 22 commitments. You factor in Hawkins and Colbert and that's 24. I don't know how how high a number the staff intends to go with this class but it's definitely getting tight. Good point by BFLT, though. Maybe the staff backed off for other reasons as well.

"I grew up wanting to be a Longhorn and nothing changed," Sanders said. "Then they offered me as a receiver so I couldn't turn it down. That's what I want to play."
"I've always been a Longhorn and I'm excited for it," Sanders said.
"Really, I was like Texas?! Texas?! It was my dream," he said. "I got this opportunity to see my dream, take it or go somewhere else? So I was like, I have to go with my dream. I have to complete my dream."
"That was extremely tough (decommitting from OSU)," Sanders said. "It hurt me really, but I have to do what I have to do."
"I was so confident and when I called them and he answered on the second phone call and I forgot because …it's coach Brown," he said. "I said 'Coach Brown I just wanted to call and tell you I want to be a Longhorn.' He's known I've wanted to become a Longhorn all my life. what does anyone know about Thomas Johnson?? I am hearing that he might de-commit??
Just something to keep an eye on right now. Oregon and some other schools have been trying to get him to visit but he has no plans to make any trips right now. There's always chatter towards National Signing Day that UT commitments could be looking elsewhere and it almost always works out. DE Hassan Ridgeway has been another name that gets tossed around. A lot of these recruits will be at the team banquet next weekend and/or receive in-home visits from the staff soon so that will be a big help for anyone that's getting cold feet.

Per OrangeBloods, OL Andrus Peat will NOT be visiting for the team banquet next weekend. No word if he's trying to get to Austin at a later date or if that's pretty much it for UT.
unfortunately, this one seems over. just posted from rivals -
"Five-star offensive tackle Andrus Peat (http://rutgers.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=105073) from Tempe (Ariz.) Corona Del Sol said he wants to visit Florida State (http://floridastate.rivals.com/) in December - preferably when the Seminoles are preparing for their bowl game - and then he'll take another trip to USC in January.
Peat, rated No. 14 in the 2012 class by Rivals.com, has already visited Nebraska (http://nebraska.rivals.com/) and Stanford (http://stanford.rivals.com/). There are still others involved in his recruitment but the 6-foot-7, 305-pound prospect doesn't have any other plans at this point to take other trips."

**Take another five-star off of the banquet roster. DB Landon Collins said tonight that he will not be visiting Austin this weekend because his brother, who plays for a different high school (not sure why), will be playing in the Louisiana state championship game next weekend and he wants to be there for it. He says he has plans to re-schedule.

Great question and I wish I knew more about what all goes into these rankings. In the big picture it is difficult to get ranked by Rivals. The majority of high school players don't get ranked at all and most don't even have a Rivals page. A slim percentage of kids go on to play collegiate athletics so it speaks to how good these kids are even if they're just a three-star. All I know is there are about 15 to 20 five-star kids per year on average and they're considered to be the ones most likely to have a major impact at the college level.

Per Hook 'Em 24/7, Texas is trying to get back in the race for DB LaDarrell McNeil of Dallas Wilmer-Hutchins. Although still committed to Tennessee, his recruitment is considered to be pretty open at the moment and Duane Akina is supposed to stop by his school this week. McNeil is trying to figure out which visits he wants to take but he does have officials to Tennessee (January 14th) and Oklahoma State (January 21st) set. A wide range of schools including UT are still after him so he has a lot to think about. One positive working in the Longhorns' favor is they were the favorite at the beginning of the year before Akina left for Arizona. Things went south when McNeil visited for the first UT Junior Day in February and left without an offer. Hopefully that mutual interest will re-surface in the coming weeks but Oklahoma State is thought to be the current leader.

I need some clarification on Gibson. It's being reported that he transferred to Goose Creek Memorial but there is a rumor out there that he was actually kicked out of Baytown Sterling so that's why he's switched schools. I question the legitimacy of that since Applewhite still seems to be interested. Right now I think it's Oliver and then everyone else so I'm not sure where Gibson will fit in. **Bruce Chambers attended the basketball game of TE Vincent Hobbs last night. He plans on returning to Mesquite Horn HS at a later date with Bryan Harsin to talk to Hobbs about setting up an official visit in January. The staff has seemingly gone back and forth deciding whether or not to add a TE to this class but Hobbs is the main target at the position should an offer go out. Look for him to get an offer if he makes that official visit to UT.
**I"m assuming it was Darrell Wyatt but a staff member did go by Dallas Jesuit HS this week to see 2013 WR Jake Oliver. I need to find the rule on this but supposedly early enrollees allow for wiggle room when it comes to signing extra players. Since Hawkins, Moore and others will be at UT in January, it could give the staff a few more spots to work with. I'll see if I can dig up something specific. Not sure what number the staff is shooting for but it looks like more than 25. There should be a handful of current players on their way out.

Two thoughts I have right away as to why the staff wouldn't do it; Brewer won't be happy and Crist throws INTs and lacks the ability escape the pocket much like Gilbert did. I want to say Crist has an injury history as well that includes a ruptured patella tendon in his knee. He is getting offers, however.

with the recent DT and WR recruits coming in that to me signals mass exodus is coming attrition wise at these positions. at DT De'Aires Cotton and Taylor Bible must have a foot out the door already. not to mention at WR with Darius White, DeSean Hales, John Harris and Bryant Jackson (although Jackson may have shot at moving to DB).

Crist would be a one and done, wouldn't see that as threat to Brewer as he'd just be around to compete his true freshman year. Now McCoy/Ash - that's a different story.
Yeah, he is turnover prone, but our other options aren't? Hell, I'd be happy to have Gilbert back at this point.

Dayne Crist would not solve the QB situation in my opinion. He would just burn bridges with the QBs Texas already have.

Jacob Karam and Randy Katz are both better options than Crist IMO. Karam has 2 years of eligibility left I believe.

i've played and been around football my entire life at many levels and unfortunately i can say this with confidence - mccoy/ash will not get you there. next year your best shot to win most likey is play a true freshman with brewer if he enrolls early and shows you anything. do you really expect the results to be any better next year than this year's 7-5 record? your only saving grace is the big xii will be down. i mean, colt redshirted behind vince and took over nat'l champion team and is texas legend and played like it - and he went 9-3 first regular season. that is dream scenario for brewer and is unlikely as hell without a redshirt year.
if you want chance to win next year then getting a transfer like crist is likely your best chance if you are playing the odds. you also get to shirt brewer which would greatly benefit him.
if you say scrap 2012 and let's build the team for run the following years and get young guys more snaps i understand the logic. it is a legitimate point - why have a one year player take snaps from younger guys.
however, if i'm the staff i want to remove the entitlement that has surrounded the Texas program that we cater to players and we won't bring in competition to push them. what is lost in bringing in crist? losing mccoy or ash? i think you are clinging on to pipe dream if you think those guys will ever help you ever have 10+ win seasons or compete for top 10 finishes. and hey, if crist isn't any good, then the other guys can beat him out, so what is lost?

Some notes from Hook 'Em 24/7...
**We were already pretty confident it wasn't going to happen, but OL/DL Arik Armstead will not be visiting Texas this weekend for the team banquet. It's unclear if he still plans to take the ACT but he has decided to take a visit to Cal on Saturday afternoon. With Armstead looking to enroll in college next semester, it's less and less likely that UT will get to make their recruiting pitch in Austin since we're almost halfway through December.
**Bruce Chambers was at Dallas Kimball HS on Monday visiting 2013 DT Justin Manning. Per his coaches, UT does plan on offering Manning in February. You can mark him down along with 2013 DT Isaiah Golden of Elysian Fields as two guys the staff will target for the DL in the next class.

Armstead, I'm sorry just rubs me the wrong way. The ACT excuse came out of nowhere, and without much comment about why Armstead, an early enrollee, is taking it. Seems like he's staying on the West Coast all the way.
Chambers is working his DISD magic. Likely one of the reasons Coach Chambers is still at Texas. I like Manning's game a lot, he's not Malcom Brown, but he's got an excellent first step and is very disruptive. I think Texas will be pretty tight with scholarships at DT next year. Agreed Golden, Manning will be the top targets. I can't see Texas taking more than two at the position. I'd like Ben Hughes to get a look from Texas also.

Some quotes from DB Adrian Colbert as he prepares for the team banquet:
"My sophomore year I had heard of UT… and saw them play in the Rose Bowl when Vince Young played and that was pretty sweet," he said. "I really got a feel of Texas when I went down there for Texas Relays and ran. I just liked the whole environment and that was just the track. I just loved it. Then me and my family we walked around a little bit in downtown when we weren't running. It was just great."
"Meeting a bunch of the players and getting a real feel for the environment," Colbert said. "I've been up there a few times, but I haven't actually gotten a full tour of the campus and met all the athletes and coaches and stuff. I've only met coach (Duane) Akina."
"Me and coach Akina talk a lot. Actually he just called me a little while ago," Colbert said. "He's a real good guy. He came to visit (Tuesday). He came to the school. He did get the opportunity to talk to my dad on the phone for a little while. It was a pretty long visit. He just broke down the whole official visit and all that we would be doing."
"I have to weigh all my options and get all the facts down before I sign anything," he said.

I might agree with as far as McCoy goes. I don't see him getting any better. He is what he will always be, but I think Ash showed potential and can still be developed. Anyways, if Texas does bring in a QB I definitely don't think Crist is the answer.

all due respect to ash - he played as true freshman, had little help from the line or veteran WRs, and that is brutal. that said, if a guy can't hit a 5-yard check down to RB throughout season or show any flashes of brilliance, either you got it or you don't to some extent. that is my experience with a lot of close-up years in football. brewer is the next hope in my mind of contender and I am always in favor of giving QB a RS year.

sounds like Adrian Colbert is a definite contender for a banquet commitment from those quotes.
any updates on LaDarrell McNeil if he is scheduling visit? heard he is wavering on Tenn commitment and is visiting NU, and also being reported he has some recent interest in Tech. considering need at safety i was wondering if any recent news, and i saw on Tennessee boards they are not too confident of him sticking with his commitment.
as a side note after the recent JUCO commitments, Denico Autry is scheduled to make his decision on Dec. 15, and he said recently that he's down to Tennessee and Miss State. Tenn was always considered the big favorite.

Nothing to talk about other than what you just said. I haven't seen anything about Akina going by his school this week. McNeil's coach said UT was back in the race but things may go quiet again if Colbert commits soon. Oklahoma State is looking good here.

Interesting the way things have worked out with Autry. He was the first JUCO on the radar this year and Texas has received commitments from two different JUCOs since then. Autry wants to attend his next school with his teammate, DT Damien Jacobs, who Texas hasn't shown much interest in. You're correct that Tennessee is the favorite and that will probably be his pick.

Some quotes from WR Marcus Johnson after his commitment to UT:
"The visit was great. We got to sit down, talk about everything," Johnson said. "Everything was really comfortable. I felt natural, felt comfortable. think it went really well."
"It's great. It's an honor to have this opportunity. it's a blessing. Texas is my dream school growing up. To have a chance to play for them, it's a great blessing and honor," Johnson said. "I've had to work hard for it."
"My junior year, people doubted me, weren't sure about me. I worked as hard as I could the summer leading up to my senior season, did everything I had to do to get that opportunity. It's great. It's a relief now."
"I just know that this is where my heart is. I haven't felt this happy and excited about committing to a school. It goes to show how great this opportunity is. I had my dream mapped out and it played out like I wanted it to."
"There was a time, I never even thought this was possible. It's been a roller coaster," Johnson said. "I hate the fact that my recruiting went the way it did. My intentions weren't bad as far as decommitting, but when it happened (with Texas), I hadn't felt like that way at all."
"People actually say live your dreams, and that's one thing I've been able to accomplish, to see my family 's face, how happy they are, how proud they are. Texas is a program we've always loved. It's an honor to have this opportunity and I'm going to do everything I can to contribute to the school and bring everything I have to the team."
"It was last Wednesday when I talked to coach (Mack) Brown and (Major) Applewhite. That was the emotional part - I didn't cry or anything - was when I committed on Sunday," Johnson said. "Leading up to it, this is what I've wanted to do. Even when I first did it, it hadn't hit me. You think about everything. You think about the fans, the school, Austin, coach Mack Brown himself. All of that came in to the magnitude of it. It's great. The biggest thing is, this is the first time anybody in my family has been able to achieve anything like this. To see my family so happy for me and the support they have means a lot."
"I can't wait. I really can't," Johnson said.
"I think I can bring somebody who is polished at route running and I have good hands going to catch the ball. I have speed so I can be a downfield threat and can stretch the field," Johnson said. "I'm a player who is going to work as hard as possible to get the best out of himself, the best out of team. I 'm relentless and I'm always trying to get better."
