Deng/Gasol/Ariza?
Deng and Ariza both figure to profit from today's moves. Both are likely to be pursued by Miami and Dallas (assuming Houston matches Parsons).

Totally accepted! Thanks. I don't know if the FO thinks they need 4 point guards or they might have traded a guard for a guard, unless despite opinion at the time they actually liked the value they saw in Daye over any guard they could have gotten in return. And, they might like their chances at filling the 4th position from other avenues rather than a trade, at the time? Like now. Or, previously in the draft (although with hindsight we know this did not occur.)
I think one of Ayres or Baynes is likeliest to be gone, as the team does not need four centers. With Anderson at least starting his career as a wing, the PF spot is actually thin enough to protect Daye, provided Ayres' shot doesn't come back.
But, it still brings up the question I was getting at. If we keep up all this pursuit, someone isn't coming back. Baynes refuses his offer, they eat Daye's salary, Bonner doesn't return even for the minimum, or Cojo, Ayres, Belli, etc. is traded to open up a roster spot for Beverly, Cotton, Darius, or whoever. We're getting down to brass tacks. Mixing metaphors, the music's gonna stop and someone's not getting a chair on the title defense team.
There was a time not too long ago that the Spurs had five PGs on their roster (just last year, actually). I just can't imagine Pop rolling with just two healthy ones. Sure, Anderson, Diaw and especially Ginobili can handle the ball. But they can't play the position defensively. I think Bonner is on the outs now, but the team may well not match an offer sheet to Baynes or even cut Ayres.

So the Rockets basically trade Jeremy Lin, Omer Asik (whom they signed with cap space in 2012) and a 2015 first round pick for a 4-20, 2015 pick from the Pelicans and some cap space to possibly extend Chandler Parsons to an overpaid contract. Or to replace him with second/third tier FAs like Luol Deng (?) or Trevor Ariza (?)
Wow, Morey. And they called you "Dork Elvis".

Cojo already knows the system and Pop trusts him, he isn't going anywhere yet, especially not until Patty comes back.
Yes, and even more, he is a complement to the other two point guards. Their weaknesses are his strengths. In that regard, he is a good fit, not just someone that knows the system and players, but he does give Pop a versatility tool to use that Tony and Patty can't provide. His scoring and play-making are lackluster, but if he had those skills, also, he wouldn't be making 2 million a year, and he might be playing for another team, or Patty might be.

I don't doubt you, that they had five, but I am not sure they were hoping to roll that way for any length of time. I am sure it can happen while you are in flux, evaluating, experimenting, looking for trades, having injury problems, and, as with Nando, even a fourth won't see much playing time. In regular situations 4 is just too deep at PG, IMO, simply from 4x5=20. If the point guards could play multiple positions, then that depth can be extended across those positions, but, personally, I don't prefer 4 of my guys to be 5'11"-6'3". I guess if the 4th and 5th are bigger combo 2 guards, then that solves the problem, and my issue with the idea is that our 1 and 2 point guards are on the small side, and 3 isn't a monster, and size is Bryce's major weakness, etc. So, situation specific, like anything else, I guess.

Not sure the Kings know what the Kings are doing. Pretty amusing.
Letting go of your 2nd best player for roughly 7 mil per for 4 years? When he's young and has a lot of upside?
Then again for some reason I'm not shocked, its the Kings.
Suns signing Thomas has to mean they're listening to offers for Dragic. I guess they want to sell high w/ Goran via trade before his big pay day. I'd rather pay Dragic his money, tbh.
As for the Heat, they will be pretty dumb if they desperately shell out 10 plus mil per to Deng or Ariza.
They should have gone after Thomas for 8-9 mil per, or Eric Bledsoe. IMO.

Forgot, do you really think they will eat those salaries, Daye or Ayres? I put that way out in the tail of probability. This team is just so good with money and staying competetive in a small market, I don't see them throwing away a million or two. That is why I am leaning toward the other options.

But Lopez left in 2013. They don't have a beefy center to pair with Davis, who is legitimately a four in the TD/KG mode. Asik should be ideal for them. Besides, he has that attractive cap contract for next season (only season). Makes more sense than Lopez.

I have one question regarding trade exceptions that I hope that a CBA expert can answer for me. If team A (that I believe has to be over the cap) deals let's say a $5M contract to team B for a draft pick it receives a $5M trade exception which is valid for one year. It can use that trade exception to take on a $5M contract within that year. This sort of makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense to me is why teams just don't do it all the time. Why do salaries ever have to match if you can just get a trade exception instead? So for example if three months later team A would like to take on a $4M contract for a pick why does it have to have a trade exception? Can't it simply do the trade and in this case team C gets a $4M exception? And this could simply go on and on.
A answer would be highly appreciated since this bothers me greatly. :)

If they renounced him why is Pincus and the others saying he can still be part of a S&T?
Because they can still create cap space by trading Nash to a team with enough space to absorb his contract or a large enough trade exception. They could also waive Nash using the stretch provision of the 2011 CBA. These are unlikely scenarios, but they exist.

Lakers can no longer S&T Pau. They renounced their rights to him today.
You can still S&T a player without Bird rights. You just have to use cap space.

I think that the only way to get exceptions that big is that the team getting the player has to have the free cap room to absorb the contract, that's what gives the other team the trade exceptions. That's why most large trade exceptions expire in the summer, the original deals were only possible when one team was far enough under the cap to absorb salary.

If they were competitive, I'd agree with you. Considering that they know that they're not competing for a Championship within the next two years, they likely think that the Spurs' window will be close to closing (which I would adamantly disagree with) by then - and I don't think that they care at the moment.

Ahh ok. So basically salaries don't have to match in trades as long as one or both teams have enough space under the cap to absorb the salaries? That would make sense.

Cuban screwed Morey hard on this one. If he matches, there is pretty much a slim chance they get Durant in 16. If they don't match, Cuban has put the Mavs ahead of the Rockets and just below OKC and the Spurs in WC food chain for a couple of years. It was a win win for Cuban all the way.

Would be dumb for the Hawks. Ferry's done a good job with them so far, this would set them back.
They were willing to eat Malcolm Thomas' salary last year. With the stretch provision, small salaries are even easier to waive.
Right, and I don't think it even matters to them given they're over the cap - they can just waive either deal and take the hit this year (one year remaining). Wouldn't even need the stretch.
It was being talked about that the Lakers would use the stretch on Nash, but would have only made sense if they needed to do it to make room for a free agent under the cap. Otherwise didn't make sense.

Contracts are automatically stretched as far as payment schedules go. The team simply chooses whether to stretch the cap hit.

Lakers are more likely looking at 2016, not next summer. 2015 Free Agent class looks weak, with Love likely being traded and signing a long-term deal (and therefore not being available) and Aldridge re-signing in Portland. I guess Rondo, Jefferson, and M. Gasol? But I have trouble seeing Gasol signing there after Pau's experience, and I'm not sure if Rondo or Jefferson makes LA a title contender. I think Brooke Lopez had a player option, but who knows if he'd opt out of his current deal.
That would explain why most of the deals they've been giving out are 2-year deals. That said, huge risk given Kobe aging. Are they basically forfeiting being a contender for the rest of Kobe's career?

Good, the Rockets upped their ceiling to the 2nd round.

Damn...that's a great deal for Houston. He might be better than Parsons, and he's almost half the price.

Damn, 8 per year for Ariza is shocking considering how the rest of Free Agency has transpired, tbh..

They want players who aren't afraid to lose...?

Ariza isn't remotely better than Parsons, and signing him to long term money is a recipe for disaster.
:lol Morey shipped out his bench (Lin and Asik) for peanuts for a downgrade at SF and...

In 10 season Ariza has averaged less than 10ppg 6 times
Statistically that means Morey will pay 8m for less than 10ppg at least twice

Looking at the free agent list, the pickings are slim. Wouldn't be surprised if Spurs choose not to use their MLE this summer.

Was thinking that too. There's not really any reason. They've got assets to trade and maybe a bit of talent on the SL team.

At this point, we might as well wait until next February's trade deadline to get a player we'll need later on down the road.

I thought Marion for sure was going back. But it's looking like he isn't. Would be a big upgrade over Bonner. Beside being an excellent backup stretch 4, I would love for Marion to be on the roster so he can advise Pop on Carlisle schemes and gameplay he had last year. It would be great insight for the Spurs to have.
W the Mavs looking like their getting Parsons, they will be the 3rd dangerous team out West, just behind the Spurs and OKC.

When was the last time a free agent chose us over another team when given a choice? I'm very insulted in these fucks consistently going out of their way to snub us at the very last second to play for a bigger market team that is clearly inferior to us as a team.

One third of the playoff rotation of the NBA champs chose the Spurs in free agency.
And sorry about that Bonner news.

Baynes will for sure and if the Spurs can't land Marion, Bonner will be. That's why its only one at this point.

I think he meant a premiere free agent that was garnering considerable interest from other teams...

@tspence26 Kevin Love to CLEVELAND, Warriors to get 1st round picks and Wolves will get Tristan Thompson and Klay Thomson ! WOW!
Back for more?

He didn't say that, and not too many premiere free agents are interested in the MLE.

It doesn't matter anymore really, in the last 10 years 4 teams in the west have made the finals. Lakers, Spurs, Dallas, OKC and those are the only teams that will consistently threaten. Lakers are out of the picture for at least 4 years so that leaves Dallas and Carlisle and OKC and Scott Brooks. So pretty much if we can out think Carlisle we got another shot at the finals.
There is no team in the east that is scary either sobwhoever wins the west is winning the championship
