Hannity:
"Do you think the video footage should be used to identify the people in these videos?"

Law Enforcement Official on Phone:
"Absolutely."

right after that though, not sure if i was on the same channel, but a senator or house member from Louisiana said that if they were stealing food or water she didn't see it as wrong

No, there's no community chest. I'm guessing if we did it, everyone could just send the money to a Paypal account and then we could donate it.

It's just a suggestion. I know a lot of people feel like their own small amount of money won't help. But every little bit helps and if people need to see it in a larger group donation, then I'm sure we can do that.

Vicki's radio station is having a fundraiser tomorrow morning at 5:00. I can get her to call her counterpart at WOAI if you'd like, Kori.

Efforts to close the breach at the 17th Street canal continued late Tuesday as the Louisiana National Guard was bringing in 108 concrete highway barriers. Each barrier is 15 feet long and weighs 15,000 pounds. They will be set up around the breach.

Helicopters were also preparing to lift 50 3,000-pound sandbags and drop them directly into the breach.

State Department of Transportation and Development spokesman Mark Lambert said at some point, the whole thing needs to be fixed because this is not a permanent solution. -- Associated Press

This is a good one. A popular N'awlins folk tale is that when Betsy went into that area that the Corps of Engineers dynamited the levees in the poor areas of town to protect downtown/rich folk area.

I guess that's a folk tale that will never die.

The only correlation with the poor and the floods is that the poor section of town is on the east side of New Orleans, which sits at the lowest elevation in the entire city and has to deal with all of Lake Pontchartrain.

This girl I've been working with the past few days has a brother in the military, working in a military hospital outside Biloxi. They are completely trapped without food and medicine - both of which are on the ground floor which is completely under water. They've also lost power and the generators will probably only last a little longer. They're hoping that helicopters can provide some assistance, but they're worried that people will start dying once the generators go out.

I know that - thus my statement -- IF LOOTERS AREN'T SHOOTING PEOPLE, LET THEM LOOT. In other words, if they are just looting, let them loot. Obviously if they are shooting people or hurting people in another way, then take them in. But to concentrate so much effort on the looters when the whole city is going to be underwater in the morning is ludicrious.

Then the camera man and reporter go to the shoe section and TWO FEMALE COPS have a cart full of stuff and are putting shoes in. Kori, I know you said to keep the racial shit elsewhere, but I really think what I'm about to say is very relevant.

For those of you that have never been to NO, there is a serious fucking racial division in place. A disaster of this scale should be a uniting force, where everyone is helping anyone who is in need. There was footage earlier on WWL of white folks voluntarily risking their lives to help people evacuate some of the poorer, predominately black areas of town. I am absolutely certain that some white people out there have black people to thank for their lives as well in this tragedy, even though nothing was shown of it that I saw.

I think the more footage that is shown of all the looting taking place, especially when it appears to be solely by black folks, the more wary the predominantly white viewers are getting. The actions taking place that aren't being shown on TV, like the volunteers of all races helping out their fellow man, need to be shown rather than concentrating on the less fortunate people that are focused on grabbing whatever they can to avert their own demise.

This could be a situation that brings us closer together as a nation, a united people. Instead network coverage is sensationalizing the actions of the less fortunate rather than the actions to save fucking lives. And it pisses me off.

9:23 P.M. - FEMA bringing 2,000 officials to town. Bringing in food, water, ice, tarps. Setting up offices where you can get grants and loans.

9:21 P.M. - (AP) One Mississippi county alone said its death toll was at least 100, and officials are "very, very worried that this is going to go a lot higher," said Joe Spraggins, civil defense director for Harrison County, home to Biloxi and Gulfport.

Thirty of the victims in the county were from a beachfront apartment building that collapsed under a 25-foot wall of water as Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast with 145-mph winds.

9:19 P.M. - Lt. Governor Landrieu: Asking hotels in neighboring states to extend stays of refugees and to give them first priority and to possibly offer discounts for extended stays.

The Red Cross is unable to accept small, individual donations or collections of items such as clothing, food or cleaning supplies. The cost to sort, package and distribute these types of donations to a disaster victims is almost always greater than the cost of purchasing the items locally, and it is logistically impossible to distribute a wide variety of individual items in a meaningful way. Because of these cost and logistical concerns, we recommend that you support your community by donating these items to an organization that is equipped to put them to the best possible local use.

Just a note about Red Cross donations:

If you donate locally, like my GF's fundraiser tomorrow morning here in DFW, the monies go to the local chapter who then decides how much to give to the national chapter, which distributes to the stricken area. There was a pretty big controversy about this after 9/11 here.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from donating, but know that not all of your money is going to go to New Orleans.

Well on this form on redcross.org, you can specify that the money goes to the Hurricane Relief and not to your local chapter. I'm not sure how full-proof that is, but that's how it's set up.

Early in the regular season? Don't you think there's more important things to consider than the stadium?Well they have less than three weeks to figure out where to play. Life will go on.

Manny, I heard their first game (9/18) and at least 3 others will be in the Dome.
The last I hear at 9pm was that the dome was booked. We'll see.

AHF, I know KSAT reported that but according to the Saints, they haven't made a decision. I just posted about it in that thread in the Spurs forum.

An article from one hour ago ..

New Orleans Saints and NFL officials are discussing contingency plans in case the Superdome, the Saints' home field that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina, is not ready for use early in the regular season.

"We are discussing the situation with the Saints and looking into potential alternatives," said Greg Aiello , the NFL's vice president of public relations. "No decisions have been made."

Shea Guinn , president and general manager of Reliant Park, the home field for the Houston Texans, said he had offered the use of that stadium.

They haven't made their decision to make the game in the Alamodome or not. But I know they will be practicing in SA this weekend.

There's an NCAA volleyball tourney scheduled that weekend in the dome.

I bet the NF'ingL can get whatever dates they want in that barn, booked or not. Hell, I'll go to SA for a game. Especially with the division opponents the Saints have in Atlanta, Carolina, and Tampa Bay.

I know someone mentioned the pets that have been relocated to S.A. and are available for adoption.

Here's the info on that ....

SAN ANTONIO -- More then 80 dogs and cats that were displaced by Hurricane Katrina are ready for adoption in San Antonio.

The pets were forced to leave the Animal Control Center in Baton Rouge, La., and were transferred to the Bexar County Humane Society.

The animals of different breeds and sizes will be vaccinated, microchiped, spayed or neutered for about $25.

"We're encouraging people to come on out if they've been thinking about getting a pet," said Cathy Rosenthal, of the Society for the Prevention of Animals.

The shelter in the 4800 block of Fredericksburg Road will be open until 7 p.m. from Tuesday through Sunday.

Is anyone else feeling the guilt and/or depression? Earlier I was watching CNN while eating dinner and drinking water, and the guilt kinda just hit me...alot of those people haven't had food or water for 2 days...and might not have any for little while longer.

And the ignorance is pissing me off too. My roommate and her fiance are pretty much oblivious to as what's going on, they only know what i've told them...and a few people I talk to online are totally unknowing about how bad this is. I just can't understand people.

After Sept 11th I had uncontrollable feelings of guilt for some reason and I cried a lot. I'm trying not to get crazy about this one, but it's hard.

We are going to go get a dog tomorrow. Maybe that will help me feel better.

I went to hang out with my neighbors earlier and one of them asked me why I was so quiet. I told them about Katrina and everything happening, and one guy point blank didn't believe that it was as bad as I said it was.

We turned on CNN and he just freaked out. He called his parents to tell them. I left then, but I felt like I defeated ignorance at least a tiny bit.

This is shaping up like a disaster movie though... last hope to save the city is to sink a couple of barges in the gap in the levee, with the hopes of thousands on the line.

The messed up thing is they're going to have to remove those barges once the level of the lake goes back down or else the water will just be trapped in the city.

The level of the lake is above the level of the city. Even when the water goes down, they'll have to rebuild the levy and pump water out or it isn't going anywhere.

I was talking to Kori early about the airlift. It just didn't make any sense to me to drop sand from the air because the water would wash it away before you got back to add more to it.

Yet, they tried it and what happend?

11:28 P.M. - (AP) LAFAYETTE, La. -- Parents who had to evacuate because of Hurricane Katrina will be able to register their children for school in Lafayette Parish starting tomorrow.

Burnell Lemoine, deputy superintendent and chief academic officer for the Lafayette Parish School System, says registration ends Thursday and parents will be contacted Friday to let them know what school their children should attend.

He says students should be in classes by Tuesday. The children will be assigned to current schools depending on where they are in homes or shelters.

At least this will give the kids a semblance of normalcy.
