A heads up that OK State is playing Tulsa tonight at 6:30 p.m. on Fox Sports 1.
I'm not necessarily buying the hype on the them right now, but there's no excuse for them not to be pretty good with Rudolph's experience and all of the dangerous skill players around him.
No reason they won't finish with 10 wins

Quotes from the mother of OL Junior Angilau of Salt Lake City, UT (OrangeBloods).
One of the coaches she's talking about, Jake Langi, is a Polynesian recruiting assistant that Herman hired a while back out of Euless Trinity.
“Jake Langi called and said they watched Junior, said he played really well,” Ms. Angilau said.
“I text with Derek (Warehime) all the time. Derek is definitely my favorite. They’re all awesome, but I really like Derek. Coach Herman hits us up from time to time,” Ms. Angilau said. “He’s really down to earth, really a character. We met Bob (Shipley), he’s really a good guy."
“Derek is the one we hit up the most, but Jake has been hitting us up. He just started recruiting there. Junior is Polynesian, Jake is Polynesian, so we talk a lot and that’s nice.”
“We did a couple unofficial visits this summer. USC, we went down there. We had gone down to California for something, so we swung by USC,” Ms. Angilau said. “He went to Alabama. He wasn’t really fond of Alabama. Utah is right here, so we just went there for a camp, didn’t even tour the campus but went to a Utah camp."
“Of course, our favorite visit was Texas.”
“Derek, man, just being a single mom, I’ve raised them since they were young, Derek just won my heart over as super genuine. With him, I can turn my boy over to someone I trust,” Ms. Angilau said. “You can just tell. That’s what I told Junior. I told him at the end of the day, I support him 1 billion percent whatever he does, but the hospitality (at Texas), you can just tell. Derek, just me personally as a mom, just won me over with his genuine love for the game and his boys. You could tell when coaching them, in the huddle, talking about grades. The thing I know about Junior, he will definitely strive to make his coach proud. If they’re talking about Bs and Cs, he will be an A. He just tries to play but also loves to have good grades. He cares about that. Just makes me proud. Makes good choices, cares a lot for others, will not let the coach down."
“The loyalty of his (Tom Herman) team is phenomenal. The loyalty of his coaching staff, his trainer, (Yancy) McKnight. Junior loved McKnight, loves the gym, loves to better himself.”

Per Inside Texas, 2019 WR Garrett Wilson of Austin Lake Travis will be at the Maryland game this weekend.
He's a good-looking prospect, but as of right now, I don't think he's in that top tier of '19 WRs with guys like Beason, Henderson, Wease and Whittington.
He could receive an offer, though.

A new tradition going into the season? I wonder if Herman brings out an artist or someone to perform at any time in the season? It's out there and far fetched but I remember him meeting with a guy over the summer who's in charge of big concerts around the state. I've been trying to key in on what they may have planned together. Maybe just game atmosphere...

Honestly, the problems with the oline seem to be missed assignments, easily fixed with a little coaching.
The problems with the defense are much more disconcerting. Keep in mind this is a very senior laden Maryland team and that is always tough for a 1st game.

We were horrible. An interception, a blocked FG, and a punt returned for TD's, half of our pts.
They were much the better team, coached and players.
But our lockers look really good.

Still can't get off blocks, can't stop a running QB, can't tackle in the open field... And they just flat out caught us with useful plays in bad D sets (Hello Mr. Tough guy Orlando)
O
Had to abandon the run. Very few big holes opened. Blocking on passing varied, lots of bad penalties.

Made and gave up huge plays. FGs a problem AGAIN.
Coaches were every bit as bad as the players.

Connor killed UT on the last drive twice in a row. But that still doesn't explain the lack of Warren carries when Porter was horrible. Buechele still never threw over the middle because he is too fucking short.

Team has the exact same problem it had with Charlie. You need a quality QB, one that is at least a junior. The strike out was when we missed on a QB graduate transfer, which would have given us time to get the ones in the pipeline mature enough to start. Without that, it doesn't matter how Strong the defense is (see what I did there?), it will break down because our offense isn't keeping the other offense off the field. Once the QB position is solidified, then the wins will pile up. It won't happen this year.

51 points isn't because of the QB. Not saying our QB situation is great but there were problems all over the field. Defense looked worse than where it left off last year. Very disappointing start to the Tom Herman era.

It was a very odd game. I was surprised how much they were pressing in their first offensive series. I think when Shane threw the INT the team may have fell back to that "oh no here we go" moment where they begin to doubt themselves. I thought that myself as a fan because you wanted a clean game and to do that so early I didn't think they'd respond well, this team is not used to winning. I was very surprised at how Shane looked rattled through much of the first half. He looked more composed as a true freshman against Notre Dame. They obviously don't trust anything they have in the run game which is unfortunate. I thought Drayton the RB wizard would have found himself something formidable to work with. The frustrating part was the undisciplined mistakes. I think the game was winnable but every time they'd get they ball moving or get in the red zone they'd get flagged. Some calls I think we're a bit much like all the offensive holds. I've never seen so many calls. For as accurate a passer as Shane as supposed to be surprised they didn't take more downfield shots. When they would Shane was severely overthrowing, then again that shouldn't be an issue with Duvernay and Burt.

The play calling was sketchy all the dink and dunk throws were from them not trusting what they have at RB and TE. I liked what they did a couple times in the wildcat from Heard and Humphrey. Both calls were successful but they never went back to it. A very important part of the game was when they were down 3 at midfield with a chance to take the lead they ran Shane twice, once on 4th down. That was the most mind boggling thing to me. Even I would have thought to call Heard or Humphrey twice in a roll instead of Shane. Both are more physical and LJH is 6'5 I mean jeez he doesn't have to do much more than lean forward to get 3 yards. I thought that was the most significant point in the game. Once we missed there that's when I knew it wouldn't be our game to win. These are my takes on the offensive side. It's a frustrating loss but in an odd way I'm not ready to give up on Herman like some of you are. Sure it was a dreadful start but if we don't see game to game improvement then we may see he's not cut for it. Now he's got something to draw from let's see if he can show growth in this team. We got a long season to fight and scrape up wins. Though I'm forced to now be cautious I'm still optimistic.

keep in mind, this was a strong Maryland team with a lot of senior leadership. It wasn't a case of us wetting the bed this is a tough draw as a fist game of the year,
New coaches are still working out a lot of issues with this team.
Biggest negatives I saw was mostly on defense.
When Maryland established the run, our defense became Charmin soft in pass protection.
We still don't know how to take pursuit angles
Linebackers are still the weakest part of this team.
Shedding blocks is a big issue right now.
I saw lots of issues with the oline, but that seemed to get fixed in the second half.
Buschele looked scared out there, not sure if it was first game jitters, how a problem we are going to have to deal with, but he just didn't look very confident.
Warren looks so damn slow every time he touched the ball he looked like he was moving in slow motion.
TE is a real problem for this offense.
Offensive special teams flat out sucks, fumble on kickoff return, two missed field goals, one blocked field goal. The loan bright spot was punt return for a TD.
Good things I saw.
WRs are legit, if we can get them the ball, they will win some games for us.
Burt found his hands again.
Hill is a gamer. Same with Poona and Hughes also played a pretty good game.
Special teams on punts and field goal defense looked great.
I still think this is a 9 win team, but that means we are likely to have 4 losses. I still feel good about facing the two Oklahoma teams, Herman is going to have to call a smarter game or he is no better than Strong.
Take the point blank field goals, we left 7 pts on the field because of his pride. IMO we get those 7 pts and we win this game.

Not true at all. We out gained them in yardage, we had more first downs. we drove into their red zone 3 times and came away with a grand total of 3 pts from those drives. Our defense sucked badly, there is no way we should have let them run and pass on us like this, but Texas did have their chances and shit the bed. like I said, if we just kick fieldgoals and get the extra point we failed at Texas is playing with the lead in the 4th and their offense has to give up the run. We didn't so we will just pass it off as us sucking, but there is more to the truth than this.

We had 473 yards on 84 plays
They were the better team, period.
And our best drive, the last, they played a very passive prevent as the game was done.

That was panic imo because we had such a hard time stopping them.
What I find amusing is Orlando thinking a big key to the game would be getting them off the field on 3rd down. They had their first downs after they ran their second down play. 3rd down D was insignificant (3 out of 9).

JUCO TE Dominick Wood-Anderson updates his commitment status (24/7):
“At the moment, that’s where I was feeling home,” Wood-Anderson said. “That’s the place that was most similar to California, where I’m from. That’s really why I made that decision."
“And obviously, Coach (Tom) Herman and Coach (Corby) Meekins did a good job at Houston, turning that program around. I believe that they’ll do the same at Texas.”
“As of right now, I couldn’t even tell you,” Wood-Anderson said. “It’s kind of iffy right now. I’m open to each and every school that contacts me. I’m open until I sign the dotted line. You just never know until that paper is signed.”
“Winning is a big factor,” Wood-Anderson said. “I was kind of disappointed (with the loss to Maryland). But every team has their first game jitters and stuff. But they’ll bounce back.”

Herman is extraordinarily polite. A+ for humility and self control. (Guess I'm used to pop)
Stopping the run in the base defense was horrible. I think our coaches were shocked how we could not get off blocks. You can play sound gap D all you want, but if the guy blocking you defeats you, controls you, good luck. They knocked us back. We rarely beat the guy in front of us. And then when they broke out, the tackling down field was horrendous. This is not a scheme thing, it's a fundamental problem. Beat your man, tackle.
Our run game. When the opponent knows you cannot move the football on the ground this is immediately a problem. Then to add to that, if they can get pressure with a 3 and 4 man front while running solid pass protect schemes that's a huge problem. A good elusive RB that sees well down field can help poor blocking by taking risks. Finding spots that are not drawn up. We don't have that. Warren can make his own yards by just bruising for extra yardage. But we got to the point where we relied on our receivers to try to make plays. The play calling illustrated this.
Buechele is gonna have difficulty when good athletes on the defensive front get free and after him. When we left the backs and tight ends to block and he did get time, their coverage was good. Big plays are difficult when the S are well down the field and others are in position to make the throw difficult. Bubble passes go for 5 yards when there are plenty of DBs just waiting for it. They did not even make attempts to play the bubble aggressively. "Give em a few yards, they can't run the ball"
You can't run the ball, you can't stop the run, makes for a long frustrating day. We tried to pass our way out of it. It did not work. Bad mistakes where made by both teams that led to big plays but, we had by far the worse timed penalties. Most of those penalties were very easy to call. That's on us. Our receivers run down the field blocking, never even looking for the ball or just grabbing D backs? Connor Williams totally defeats his man one play, the guy gets back up and Williams holds him... Please finish the play, fall on top of him, keep him buried.
No one should read something this long... but I feel a bit of catharsis.

People jumped on me for my lack of belief in Warren. I don't care what the guy did in his freshmen year, he looks slow fat and because he is so heavy he will likely get injured again. He needs to drop about 25 lbs. if for no other reason than he just isn't a good running back at his current weight, if he can't move him to the defensive line or even TE, hell we could use one of those.
I personally don't want to hear any more talk of him being a great RB, he isn't, he is a fat linemen playing running back.
Vito Corleone
09-04-2017, 11:33 AM
BTW I would make a few changes to some position guys.
1. I move Armani Foreman to full time runningback, maybe he can follow his brother. I'd move Warren to TE. He is too slow and big to play runningback. 3rd I'd move Hagar back to DE. Biggest thing I do is I give Ehlinger equal snaps at QB to Buechele and prepare him to get some meaningful game time snaps.

Honestly if Herman and Co don't think we have a run game or don't want to establish it I think we're better of with Heard at QB or even Ehlinger. Either one is much more of a threat to run than Shane is. If they continue to try to open up the run by passing first instead of running to open up the pass no one is going to respect our run game. I think this is what happened in the opener. They pressed Shane to make some key throws to scare Maryland into backing off. When Shane didn't hit we were forced into some bad situations which never allowed us to come back and establish the run. Defense not holding their end of keeping us in the game makes it hard to make a large comeback when you're still trying to find a run game.

maybe I just missed the point where Herman blamed the players. Imo, I actually think Herman was taking a shot at him self by saying it was a mistake to think that he is so good that he could take a 5-7 team and magically turn them into a championship team. I think has been very complimentary to all the players. The cold reality is that this team may not be as talented as we all thought. They're talented, just not at the level we all wanted to believe. Meyer is an ego driven coach who would probably step on anyone and everyone to get ahead. It's worked for him so far so why stop now.

Urban apparently made the same "cubbard is bare" statements when he landed at Florida but soon stocked them up with the state's penitentiary talent. I'm sure he'll pull the same heart attack routine at Ohio State when they have a down year.

I love it because if she gets into a sparing match with him, it will only make Urban look foolish.

Yeah, no. It looks like he needs his wife to fight his battles for him. She did the same shit in a Houston and it looked a foolish on her part as it does now. Pussy's undefeated and all, but it's an incredibly bad look. Is she right? Yes. Is it ever a good idea to let your loudmouth wife argue on your behalf in any setting? No.

I see what you are saying, but at the same time, if he gets into a war of words with Meyer he looks like the dumb ass because he is arguing with a coach that was once his boss and is infinitely more successful than Herman is. I think he is better off ignoring Meyer and just allowing his wife to be the ankle biter to Meyer. The news outlets will pick up what she said and the message will get across that Meyer is a idiot, and if he responds to her, then he is also an asshole.
Urban isn't stupid, he put that shit out there to discredit Herman as a coach that throws his players under the bus, and that isn't at all what he did. Meyer knows that but he will use those remarks when recruiting head to head against Texas.

This is stupid. There is no place in our society for this kind of bullshit. Stop taking your fanship so damn seriously. When you have to use the race, gender, age, or sexual orientation cards, as well as threaten phyisical harm, just because you are disgruntled, it is time to reevaluate yourself and your priorities in life.
UT has given us Horns fans plenty of ammo over recent years. Fortunately most of us have stayed classy. I cannot stand the Aggies or Sumlin, but crossing a line is crossing a line.

See that is where we differ, both had/have over inflated egos and both thought/think they are bulletproof. Meyer is just as much an enabler as Jo Pa was. Paterno didn't rape any kids but he enabled a man he knew to do so. Meyer didn't murder anyone, but he was an enabler to a man that eventually did. There is a reason Meyer also mentioned Muschamp, mostly because Will came into that Cess Pool that Meyer left and had to clean it up.
Maybe this is the state of college football and we just have to accept it, but to me, Meyers is nothing but a guy that goes to a program wins a little lets his players get away with murder (pun intended) and leaves before it back to him.
As for the comments, that was pure Phil Jackson bullshit. He was twisting words to discredit Herman in the eyes of recruits because he sees that Herman is doing a great job of closing the Texas borders again.

Do not be fooled.
Our D has gotten away with wide open SJS receivers dropping the ball. SJS has had some horrible penalties on third and short. We have again been "out called" by their O coordinator. And we have hardly been disruptive by getting in their backfield. Best play, 4th & 1 stop by Malik. And Gary Johnson is a player. Otherwise yet again, unimpressed.
Offense.
Thank you Chris Warren for running over tiny people. Ehlinger is clearly faster than Buechele, which is really important when pressure comes, but has also had at least two passes that could easily be INTs. We are not fooling them by getting receivers wide open.
Imo the LHN announcers are just horrible. May have to mute.
