Not against Patterson. He seems to always find the weaknesses with his athletes taking advantage of us.
And how the hell could “they” trust our defense either.

No one knows what this team is like yet. There have been no close games, no crunch time.

TCU has had our number big league. With Thompson running the show I think we can simply outscore these guys though.

I popped in and out of their game with SMU and the announcers were insisting the TCU defense simply did not want to be there. Avoiding tackles, not caring? wtf ??? They will care against us. Especially if this assessment by the announcing crew is accurate. Now if they do take their defense seriously and we move the ball on them as easily as we did Tech, I will believe our Oline is really coming together.

Sark seems to make it a point that losing a game is much more bitter than winning is sweet. I dont think TCU looks at playing us this way. Patterson absolutely despises our whole existence. He would let his players carry knifes if it meant they had a better chance of beating us. SMU is supposed to be a Metroplex rival? I think TCU takes us as a giant red X on the calendar, forget SMU. Maybe we look at TCU this way. We are indeed not liked but have yet to understand that teams are going to come in that are as talented or as good as we are and thus possibly play much harder than we will. We have taken some of the worst thrashings because of our perceived status. The only team I have faith in us brining it is Oklahoma. And they have had better coaching and better talent for quite a while so its been very tough.

The urban myth reasoning has shifted over the years.

Before the neighborhood gentrified, they were worried about fans walking to their cars after dark.

Now it's they're concerned about people drinking too much and fights on the fairgrounds. I sort of agree here. That said, the losing team usually leaves immediately. Most of the students arrive in buses/carpools and they usually leave quickly after the game. Those are your most likely troublemakers. I have found the fairground to be relatively calm at night after a game.

The real reason has always been TV. FOX/ESPN are going to have the game played whenever they think they can get the best TV number.

Yeah of course it's tv. I just never figured out why 11am games would bring in more viewers than a night game. Dunno.

Patterson said they had a coach hit with helmet by SMU player basically says SMU lacks class but that they, TCU, will not fall for that stuff. Patterson is a first class asshole imo. Also said SMU hates them and played harder. Sounds familiar, except the dude is a fat OCD shoe tying, brow wiping, asshole.

TEXAS LOOKING FOR SECOND QUARTERBACK
It sounds like Texas is looking to add an additional body to the quarterback room. I heard over the weekend that Texas is kicking the tires on several passers in the 2022 class and beyond. It seems that there is some worry about the overall depth at the position, especially if there is some attrition.
One name I’ve heard early on is USC commit and Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon quarterback Devin Brown (https://247sports.com/Player/Devin-Brown-46084902). Brown was an Elite 11 finalist who put on a great performance at the annual quarterback competition, and USC’s status puts all of their commits in play.
Nebraska commit and San Antonio Southside quarterback Richard Torres (https://247sports.com/Player/Richard-Torres-46101508) is another name I’ve heard some noise around. While Texas might be checking him out, Torres told me he’s yet to hear from anyone in Austin.

Texas could also look to Rockwall county for either of the major high school’s passers. Rockwall-Heath quarterback and Indiana commit Josh Hoover (https://247sports.com/Player/Josh-Hoover-46093827) has been lighting it up this year along with Rockwall quarterback and Mississippi State commit Braedyn Locke (https://247sports.com/Player/Braedyn-Locke-46093750).
It’s also likely that Texas could look to the transfer portal to see what’s available if there isn’t a high school name they like. The JUCO ranks don’t seem to have the high-end quarterback talent at the moment, though Tyler Junior College’s General Booty (https://247sports.com/Player/General-Booty-46058082) does have a link to Sarkisian through his uncle John David Booty who played for Sark at USC.
I talked to a source near Maalik Murphy who said the staff has communicated their plans with him thus far, so this shouldn't be something that will take him by surprise. I don't see it changing anything for him, but you never know when a second quarterback gets involved.

TCU is a rich kids school so the entitlement stuff... well... SMU is also. UT is much less expensive for actual students.
Patterson does a great job of taking football kids on the edge and making them killers.
Look at their starting RB. He definitely thought he was owed everything, then found himself with nothing, and then TCU groomed him into a player. Now we will wait for to see if he stays off the police blotter.

Still wonder what happened with our own Josh Moore...

Burton:

The Horns, in their first conference road game of the season, head to Fort Worth to take on TCU.

Quarterback
Max Duggan has beaten Texas twice. Each time it’s been his ability to move the chains with his legs that has made the difference. Expect more of the same Saturday morning. But he’s not entirely a one-trick pony. Duggan is far from a polished passer but he has decent arm strength and he can get hot for stretches of the game. Casey Thompson enters the game with absurd numbers for his first two college football starts. Is Thompson for real? This game should tell us a lot.
Texas

Running back
On paper, this is the match-up of the day. The no. 1 RB in the country in the class of 2020 versus the no. 2 RB. Bijan vs Zach. Both are tremendous players, can find a crease and take it the distance. But add in Roschon Johnson and Keilan Robinson and the match-up starts to tilt.
Texas

Wide receiver
While Texas receivers have seemingly come alive this season, the TCU receivers may be the strength of their offense. Both Quentin Johnston and Taye Barber are future NFL players and can be deep threats. Barber doesn’t get much notoriety, but he can fill up the box score. Xavier Worthy has been a revelation for the Horns while Jordan Whittington has, knock on wood, stayed healthy and been a steady presence.
TCU

Tight End
TCU doesn’t use its tight end group nearly as liberally as the Horns, nor do they have the experience or depth.
Texas

Offensive line
TCU’s offensive line is solid, especially if their center who was injured each of the last two weeks can return on Saturday. Texas’ offensive line, after two weeks of excellent play, appears to be getting better and more cohesive. Or was it just the teams they were playing (we all saw what happened against Arkansas)? If the Texas OL plays well this weekend, particularly in pass protection, then we are seeing them become a potential team strength.
Even

Defensive line
Before the season, I thought the Horns and Horned Frogs had two of the top three defensive lines in the conference (to go with Oklahoma). Now, I have questions about both of them. However, TCU’s issues have come from injuries to their best edge player and their best DT, as well as a key back-up there. They’re all supposed to be back this week. Until someone other than Moro Ojomo steps up and starts disrupting plays with any regularity, this is an easy call.
TCU

Linebacker
While Texas linebackers haven’t exactly lit the world on fire this season, TCU’s have been uncharacteristically poor. They are missing run fits and not being the combined fail-safe and disruptor in the hole that Gary Patterson typically gets from this unit. Texas needs to consider spying Duggan in this game with DeMarvion Overshown, who should be up to the task. Brockermeyer isn’t quite quick enough to do it effectively.
Texas

Secondary
Until proven otherwise, the Texas secondary is overrated. The safeties, outside of Jerrin Thompson, just aren’t producing much in the way of pass defense or even run support. The corners got beat deep twice against Texas Tech. TCU expects to return Noah Daniels at corner this week and Daniels is as legit as they come. However, TCU has had its own issues with shoddy safety play.
Even

Special teams
Both teams have good returners. I wouldn’t be surprised if either team made a big play in the return game. Cameron Dicker probably has more ability from distance on field goals than his counterpart but Dicker’s accuracy has been average at best this season. TCU’s punter has been one of the nation’s best, while Texas has shown a penchant for blocking punts the last couple of weeks. As for the Texas punt team, they haven’t been called on in the last nine quarters of play.

Losing to Oklahoma has been bad. But losing to TCU consistently has been completely unacceptable. Sark needs to put Patterson in his place. I think he will. I sure as hell hope so, or we will be looking for a new coach again.

This game is so frustrating. Yes, we are winning, but we are killing ourselves with drops and penalties. Losing Okafor was huge for the OL. Since he went out, the OL has been average at best. We wasted 2 great TD opportunities on those turnovers....at least we got 6, but still, we needed 14. When you are on the road, in conference, against a team that has dominated you, you need TDs not FGs.

I understand running the ball, but throw in a few passes here and there, and use play action. What is the point of establishing a running game if you refuse to use it as a decoy to pass?

Couple near misses/drops kept the game close - Thompson had a bad game and the team still found a way to win. Aside from getting away from Bijan/run game in the 2nd q, I thought the offensive playcalling was solid.

Ketch:

Ding dong, the purple witch is dead.

On a day when Steve Sarkisian did the thing that his recent predecessors had so badly failed to consistently do, I'm not going to spend a lot of time nitpicking some of the uglier component's of Saturday's game.

Texas 32 TCU 27

Whatever happens for the rest of the season, it's not going to include an embarrassing loss to Gary Patterson, which is a way of saying that Sarkisian has accomplished one of the first challenges given to him in his Texas tenure... find a way to put Gary Patterson's team in its place.

Mission accomplished.

Ultimately, both teams put together pretty average performances with sketchy passing game performances and had trouble making stops on defense unless the opposing offense gift-wrapped a turnover. The difference is that the Longhorns had the best player on the field in Bijan Robinson and TCU turned the ball over deep inside its own territory. twice in the first half.

That reality might not be enough to assure everyone that bigger hurdles will be cleared later in the season, but it was enough today,.

Specifically, you just can't say enough about how special Bijan Robinson is. The Longhorns don't win this game without him. His 238 yards of total offense and two touchdowns carried the day on a Saturday when we finally saw a version of Casey Thompson during the game that probably gave us an idea of what Sarkisian witnessed in August that gave him pause in naming him the starter at the beginning of the season.

Robinson is basically Bruce Leeroy in The Last Dragon after he gets the glow. His ability to leave defenses grasping for air is the stuff of legends and we should all be thankful that we have the unique pleasure of watching him for three seasons.

(other thoughts...)

... The passing game really struggled today. Some of it was dropped passes. Some of it was Thompson not seeing linebackers and throwing balls into dangerous coverage. The bottom line is that the passing game was worse today than it was against Arkansas a few weeks ago, at least statistically.

... Thompson's legs and self-assured nature kept his performance from looking as bad as Card's in Fayetteville, but his efficiency rating finished at 114.7 and that number only occurred because Jordan Whittington went beast-mode on two second-half plays. That won't be enough in tougher games that loom on the horizon.

... It was interesting that Hiudson Card did not hold on kicks today. It makes his use and status the rest of the season a curious conversation.

... Jake Majors, Junior Angilau and Derek Kerstteter deserve a lot of credit for helping Texas dominate the line of scrimmage on offense. That trio had very few mental and physical mistakes.

... Attaboy, Whittington. Those two catches were huge.

... Thompson's first half: 6 of 14 for 47 yards, zero touchdowns, one interception and a 56.8 rating.

... With three drops today, Xavier Worthy finally looked like a true freshman. I never thought we'd see him go an entire game with just one catch for seven yards. It was interesting that Sarkisian never tried to get him going early in the game with some of the plays we've seen in each of the last two weeks.

... I thought DeMarvion Overshown was outstanding today in leading the team with 10 tackles.

... Anthony Cook's sack that forced a Max Duggan fumble was a thing of beauty. Beautiful call and beautiful execution.

... It's really interesting that the move Kyle Flood made after Denzel Okafor's injury was to slide Derek Kerstetter inside and to bring Andrej Karic in at right tackle. It feels like the Longhorns are very thin up-front.

... T'Vondre Sweat was the team's best defensive lineman today.

... Darion Dunn was solid as a rock all game.

... TCU's max Duggan was so average today.

... The unsung hero of the game was probably Cameron Dicker. All of those made field goals without missing proved to be critical today, even if none of the kicks were especially hard.

... Jacoby Jones was not awarded a sack on this play because technically it was a zero-yard gain. I want him to know that in my unofficial scorebook, I gave him a sack. I thought he played his best game of the season.

... The ejection of T.J. Carter was a turning point moment in the game.

... The opening offensive drive of the game breaking down because of a motion penalty on 3rd and one in the red-zone and a complete assignment bust by the offensive line is exactly how you lose games against better teams. Also, I found the complete chaos on offense going into the penalty on Wiley when the team was trying to get into its Wildcat formation to be pretty surprising. You KNOW they practiced that this week.

... Allowing an 87-yard return on the opening kickoff was less than optimal.

... Texas was in a position to get out of that opening kickoff mistake, but Luke Brockermeyer couldn't close the deal on a tackle on Zach Evans. Overall, Brockermeyer didn't have a day he'll long to remember in future years when he's no longer playing.

well right after I complained about play action, they opened the next drive with a beautiful play action pass that would have been a TD, but Thompson put too much mustard on the hot dog and and sailed over the WRs head.

What we should be asking is how OU is 6th. I know they are undefeated, but they have looked like ass. They should not be in the top 10. But, since they are 6, it will elevate us even more when we win on Saturday, especially if we are able to turn that win into a blowout.

It kinda matters because it helps Penn St make their case for playoff later if it comes down to it by beating a #3 team that really probably shouldn't even be top ten

which is why having premature rankings is bullcrap, and especially benefits the SEC who annually has 2-3 teams massively overranked in the top 10 preseason like a&m and Florida, who then are best by unranked SEC teams which then boost those unranked teams up to a ranking they don't deserve (Arkansas), then when the top teams of the SEC mop up those guys suddenly it looks like they are playing such a difficult schedule when in reality they just trashed on a couple teams that shouldn't have been ranked to begin with. then suddenly there's some stupid debate about whether two SEC teams should be in the playoff while some conference with a good and also deserving team gets the short end of the stick

rankings are dumb regardless, but if you use them they definitely should not have preseason rankings and imo should wait

the same crap happens every year. imo either wait until week 6 or 7 to rank, and/or only allow conference champs to be selected to compete in the playoffs

i agree but i do think that this season, if either UGA or Bama has one loss, that they would merit strong consideration for the playoff even if there is another one loss team that won their conference. i think, in the end, the two best teams in the country should compete for the title and i think these two teams are currently playing the best football. but that's the problem with college football; it's not created in such a manner so that one necessarily allows the best teams to compete for the title.

yeah id agree with this too, but the same could be said for basically all systems (like mavs/spurs in the mid 00s, lakers/kings before them, pats/colts). in the end, the best team is the one that usually wins though, so even if the two best dont play in the championship, but rather play for a conference, then its still been proven who the lesser team of the two is

id also get rid of divisions in conferences, and just the top two teams play for the conference, that would also help minimize some of the debate, so there arent issues like in the past where texas and OU were clearly the two best in the conference but since they were the same division some team like colorado got to play for the conference championship, or the same with alabama and lsu, ohio st and michigan, etc...

The Under Armour All-American IOL is fresh off an official visit to Alabama last weekend, and has been on campus at Oklahoma and USC this season.

casey thompsons father interview.......casey enrolled at ou in 2018

Fast-forward one year, and the Sooners’ quarterback job suddenly appeared to be up for grabs in the wake of the memorable Heisman tour de force from Kyler Murray. Oklahoma had Austin Kendall and Mordecai already on campus, plus five-star signee Spencer Rattler on his way to Norman. But none of those candidates looked like the surefire answer.

Thus, on the heels of a largely fruitless redshirt year, Thompson decided to come home. He entered his name in the transfer portal and enrolled at Oklahoma.

Yes, you read that correctly.

“If you go [back] after Casey’s redshirt year… during that time, Casey did enter the portal. And I’ll be quite honest with you: we had several other schools that were on the charts for Casey to look at. … And I will tell you, the other places did include the University of Oklahoma. … And I’ll even go a step further and let [out] a bombshell here that nobody knows: he actually enrolled at Oklahoma when he got into the portal.”

Well now we know for sure.
We got thoroughly beaten on both lines of scrimmage the 2nd half.
They are clearly just far better than us.

Their freshman QB will not get this much time against a real defensive line that can play an entire game. We got a bunch of guys who cannot move. They are big and strong and "look at how agile he is for an elephant!" We dont need elephants. We need quicker and stronger DE and DT that dont get buried. They were pancaking our D line on pass plays? And then on run plays their RB gets like 10 yards before they encounter a stray HAND? Our secondary just got beat on 50/50 balls. Our LB cant catch guys running at full speed after not even getting touched.

Just not good enough. Sark is a fantastic play caller. I dont know how to score when your line fails to block but we did. I think their D line actually got tired from running over and by our O linemen on our last drive. Bijan is fantastic. Worthy will be a star. Thompson played very well imo considering the lack of time, he hung in the pocket well. But without blocking it eventually falls apart.

They wore us down with dominance on the line of scrimmage. Very simple game. That was the 1 out of 10 games we play that same team and actually keep it close. 9 out of 10 they dominate us, they are a better team. Straightforward stuff. You could feel the huge obvious waiting to pounce the more series each team played.

We are definitely better with our head coach.
But if back means winning the Big 12 regular season...
The needle should be all the way to the left, parallel to the bottom of the screen.

OU should of trounced us like ARky. We did a good job on offense the 1st half converting turnovers and on offense before our offensive line got ripped apart.

oh...

With that Oline ? That’s a stretch

took multiple fortunate toetap catches, multiple prayers thrown by the QB and bailed out by receivers, multiple questionable calls/no calls, and a pathetic tackling performance from start to finish for OU to win the game only in the final seconds

the oline was not good, but there was a lot of breaks for OU, and the bad tackling was by far a worse issue than the line. we know the line is bad and simply lacks talent. but that lazy tackling was inexcusable and easily fixable.

simply tackle better, and despite all those other breaks for OU and things Texas did wrong, UT would still win by 15+

I dont know what some people on here were watching.
We were THOROUGHLY dominated on both sides of the line in the 2nd half.
Our D line gave their freshman what seemed like 5 minutes to look around and find men.
OU absolutely made some great plays.

But we got dominated pure and simple in the MOST BASIC part of the game.
Rewatch the 2nd half and watch our D lineman fall down and just get sat on, it was a pitiful display by BOTH sides of the line 2nd half.
Their defensive guys up front are flat out quicker than ours; FACT. We need guys who can get off blocks and disrupt the passer for the ENTIRE game.

Fundamental way to lose even though your freshman WR and QB had great games and we have the best back in college football. Look what happened to Bijan the 2nd half. Pitiful. You saw a close game because we have excellent skill players. WE DO NOT HAVE THE BASIC BACKBONE of a team. DL and OL.

And we are deep at D line with a bunch of what... ? We cant run. Our guys cant catch people. Maybe the guy from ND can for part of the game but thats about it.
They flat out could do about anything on offense the 2nd half with a freshman. The only way we could stop them is hope they got into the red zone with out running all the way for a TD.

The game was not that disappointing for me as we were clearly the 2nd best team out of 2 teams.
We needed more transfers on both lines.

pgardn
10-09-2021, 08:51 PM
Rewatching the 2nd half for Thompson and that was a heroic effort. He stood in a collapsing pocket and thank God Worthy and Moore could out run their secondary.

WE had the 3 best offensive players on the field.
None of them were linemen.

Their Florida win showed the weakness.
ATM defense did a great job 2nd half considering their offense ran only 12 plays until crunch time. ATMs offense is still wacked.
And the ATM defense left a receiver at the goal line completely uncovered. They still do bonehead ATM type things but it was a huge win for Fisher.

They do, but I felt Ags were too hyped coming into the season because they lost too many offensive linemen and a veteran QB. But a quality win like this only compounds the loss to MSU.

Aggies are better than UT on both lines. Thats clear.

Honestly I think Fisher needs an offensive coordinator.
He is not the QB guru he thinks he is.
He is constantly in Calzada's ear DURING the game. What happens at practice? Leave the kid alone for 1 second for Gods sake. Fisher talks like a machine gun. Its got to be a bit overwhelming DURING a game. Tiny details should be ironed out already.
The last drive for the Aggies was huge though. I thought the kick off return might have stunted the fact that they still needed to keep drives going on offense.
And the defense being on the field that long and their D line would not give up. Talent AND desire.

They have two walkover games now in conference. They need to come through.

We're two OL and two DL's away from being really good. The inability to stop the run in the 2nd half yesterday ultimately decided the outcome. The change at QB for OU was the difference offensively for them. Rattler was in trouble in the first half yesterday.

I hope you are right about bouncing back. Right now, I think we will have to have a lot of luck to beat OSU.

i know that we had trouble stopping the run, but the offense could not stay on the field due to poor Oline play. They were all over Casey every play. The result was the defense ran out of gas. The defense was exhausted because the offense had continuous 3 and outs. No defense will be able to stay on the field like that, especially against an offense like OU has. Our Oline was by far our biggest problem from where I sat. And it’s been that way for years. Sam got pummeled on a regular basis his whole career.

It was awful. Their RBs looked like they had been shot out of a cannon. The DBs were immediately on their heels turning to run downfield to chase. We have a bunch of very big guys that just cant move and get off blocks. This idea of our DL "occupying (re dancing with)" offensive lineman so the LBs can make plays is a failure. Our DL MUST be disruptive and get on people in the backfield and make plays. We need much more agility the whole way through the DL. We knew the OL was in trouble.
I really have to praise Sark's ability to find plays that work without a proper OL. Overshown was completely out of the game in the 2nd half it seemed. LBs having RBS already moving full speed at them... good luck.

I still like the overall direction of the team however. If we can still get recruits we will be headed in the proper direction offensively. Our Pac-14 defensive coordinator has officially been welcomed to the Big 12 after the first three games. It would be great if you could find an interview with him explaining the game. "We scored too fast" is the only thing I would say and then leave the room.
