Get Shaka the F out of Austin immediately.....what a freakin' choke artist.

Props to ACU for a helluva game, helluva coaching job, helluva a bunch of heart and tenacity.

I feel bad for our kids, they were saddled with Shaka Not Smart as their coach. Enjoy the NBA to all the guys who will be leaving.

The kids made the plays that lost the game. Shaka made the poor coaching decisions. Texas is just not a basketball school at least not in my years of watching. Maybe in the 1940 's. Slater Martin.

I don’t think Matt Coleman could have played any worse, but Courtney Ramey has got to be the worst Texas starter I’ve ever seen. I hope he’s a senior with no remaining eligibility.

Inside Texas

Texas is back on the board with the commitment of (ESPN) four-star defensive tackle Kristopher Ross. With the verbal by the 6-foot-3, 279-pound long-armed and quick defensive tackle, the Longhorns again are moving up in various class rankings with a shot at a top 5 class come December and February.

The verbal of Ross is indeed a big one. North Shore used to be a school Mack Brown and the Longhorns won many big battles, but in recent years those battles have been lost. Beating out Oklahoma, USC and LSU for Ross is another sign the Texas staff is a strong one, and heading in the right direction on the recruiting trail.

With Ross in the fold, it’s time to revisit my best class scenario for the Longhorns in 2022. This is NOT a prediction, but just the best class scenario with the latest on many on the list.

QB Quinn Ewers, Southlake Carroll (Ohio State commit)
6-3, 210
What to know: New Orleans is watching this recruitment closely
Born to throw a football in Burnt Orange?

QB Maalik Murphy, Junipero Serra
6-5, 225
Committed to: #AllGasNoBrakes
Texas is looking at Murphy as what they can develop him into way down the road. Arm power is elite. Recruiting ability is very good too.

RB Jaydon Blue, Klein Cain
5-10.5, 205
Committed to: #AllGasNoBrakes
Blues Clues ran 10.7 FAT last week at over 200 pounds.

RB Jamarion Miller, Tyler Legacy
5-9.5, 195
The competition: Oklahoma State and Alabama
A recruitment that once seemed like a lock to Texas is going to need a momentum swing back towards Austin.

WR Evan Stewart, Frisco Liberty
6-0, 175
The skinny: Texas vs. SEC, now including Texas A&M.
Freak athlete with developing WR understanding working with Margin Hooks.

WR Jordan Hudson, Garland High
6-1, 185
Where it stands: Texas still working on the Oklahoma verbal
Hudson has the best hands in America in 2022, and sneaky athleticism

WR Chris Marshall, Fort Bend Marshall
6-3, 195
Trio fighting it out: Texas A&M looking to hold off Texas and Alabama
Quick developing playmaker also averages 20 points per game in hoops in Fort Bend ISD!

WR Armani Winfield, Lewisville
6-2, 180
Committed to: #AllGasNoBrakes
Looked smoother and quicker than ever at recent Under Armour Camp Dallas, where he ran a 4.59 laser forty.

TE Holden Staes, Westminster School (Ga)
6-4, 230
The competition: SEC power, Notre Dame and Mack Brown
Long shot, but Jeff Banks loves these battles. Could be a class without a TE pending spring practice returns.

OT Neto Umeozulu, Allen
6-4, 297
The competition: Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, you name it
Allen High has a head coach opening, Texas should help them fill it.

OT Kelvin Banks, Summer Creek
6-5, 300
Inside skinny: Texas still leads Texas A&M and LSU with a few others on the outside looking in
Plays for Kenny Harrison at Summer Creek.

OG Earnest Green, St. John Bosco (CA)
6-4, 330
Competition: USC, Oregon, Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, Georgia, Texas A&M, Florida
Green is worth the fight. One of the very best OG’s in the country.

OT/G Kam Dewberry, Atascocita
6-4, 320
Where it stands: Ohio State, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Texas
Big recruitment for Kyle Flood working from behind against Texas A&M and Oklahoma. Dewberry likes Ohio State best. Parents like closer to home more.

OG Devon Campbell, Arlington Bowie
6-3.5, 317
The inside skinny without Steve McKinney: Texas leads Oklahoma, Alabama
Flood is doing very well from a relationship building standpoint, and that is huge in this recruitment.

OG Connor Robertson or Cole Hutson
Texas should win out on one of the two, but neither are locks. Robertson now has Stanford to go with every other Pac-12 south of Eugene. Hutson is moving towards a Texas vs. Oklahoma throw-down.

DT Jaray Bledsoe, Bremond
6-4, 270
The real contenders: Texas A&M, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma
Bledsoe still likes the idea of Oklahoma. Bo Davis has the best position coach relationship. Two zoom calls with Nick Saban, and Texas A&M working very hard.

DT Kristopher Ross, North Shore
6-3, 279
Committed to: #AllGasNoBrakes
Bo Davis owns North Shore, or did everyone forget?

DE/EDGE Derrick Brown, Texas High
6-4, 205
The competition: Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Colorado
Will be committed prior to senior season, could be as early as June or as late as August. Texas working from behind.

DE/EDGE D.J. Wesolak, Booneville (MO)
6-5, 236
The competition: Clemson, Notre Dame, Texas A&M
Good buddy in area Tyson Ford is a verbal to ND, but the Fighting Irish have three EDGE prospects committed in the class already. Clemson was a huge offer. Sark and PK have Texas right there.

LB Trevell Johnson, Arlington Martin
6-1, 195
Committed to: #AllGasNoBrakes
A hidden gem in terms of being a guy that is an active recruiter for the Longhorns in the class.

LB Harold Perkins, Cy Park
6-2.5, 205
The competition: Texas A&M, Alabama, USC, Florida
Jeff Banks continues chip away, and Perkins likes the conversations. This recruitment remains scheduled to go to early January.

S Jacoby Mathews, Ponchatoula (LA)
6-1.5, 210
The competition: Florida, LSU and Clemson
IT remains the same here, Texas leads Florida and LSU. Some very good connections with Terry Joseph and the Ponchatoula coaching staff.

S Bryan Allen Jr., Aledo
Commitment: #AllGasNoBrakes
6-0, 190
Favorite IT poster remains @keganr

N/CB/S Bryce Anderson, Beaumont West Brook
5-11, 185
The competition: Texas A&M, USC, Stanford
James Brown vs. Chip Ambres recruitment … James still predicts the Longhorns! OV’s to Texas A&M and USC scheduled the first two weekends in June.

N/CB Jaylon Guilbeau, Port Arthur Memorial
6-0, 180
Commitment: #AllGasNoBrakes
Golden Triangle toughness with good junior tape.

CB/N/S Terrance Brooks, Plano John Paul II
5-11, 188
The competition: Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Alabama, Stanford, Oklahoma
George Teague/Chet Brooks/Mom loves Bay Area. Terry Joseph is popular with the family.

CB Denver Harris, North Shore
6-1, 180
The competition: Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU
Texas back to owning North Shore?

K Blake Ford, Arlington Lamar
6-0, 190
The competition: Scholarship offers
Chris Sailer No. 1 ranked 2022 kicker

Just watched a ton of film on Chris Ross. This guy might be a good DT for Texas, heck he might be a great DT for Texas. But I'm telling everyone, if we can convince him to spin down to the offensive line he would be a NFL quality guard or tackle. He has the motor, the feet, really long arms and I dare say a bit of a mean streak.

I'm sure he will be effective on the defense, but on offense he would be a legend. .

Too bad. He could produce some big plays. That family seem to have some issues from way back to big brother.
Never know with this age; Reese L. sounds like he got his act together and has moved on as a very good student.

Would he really want to come to a school that cares so little about b-ball...
Imo opinion "they" really need to slash the tourney way down. The regular season is worthless.
And then a conference tourney. And then the NCAA and NIT... overload.
UTSA plays a regular season as practice for their conference tourney, its so boring.

I dont understand the comments about Sreve Patterson hiring 2 of the hottest coaches at that time. Hindsight is 20/20. Both Strong and Smart were coming off impressive years and Mack had to go along with Rick. Saban was fucked up by Mack. In football I believe Gruden was a pick everyone wanted. Gruden...

So that begs me to ask... who would've been the picks if not for Strong not taking offense seriously in the Big 12 and Shaka never deciding to use his full court pressure.

Patterson was woke because he was one of most miserly ADs we have ever had?
He wanted a business model at the cost of a winning model?

I don’t get it... woke?

This about a college trying to win football games, that’s what’s wrong with the country... Lost on this comment.

After the Saban thing fell through he decided that Texas needed a black coach and that was all he interviewed. We had two candidates both black. He interviewed Strong and hired him without even meeting with the second.

Pretty much did the same thing with Smart. All he wanted was his woke agenda, and he was proud of his hires. He set the athletic program back 10 years. He is proof that you can't just make a decision like this without a consideration for all candidates not just one race.

I think we've found ppl who want to continue to push race. Him being "woke" which I doubt the ppl using the word have much understanding of it. He did what he thought would be best for the school, at that time. Mack didn't do too great his last few years and Tom Herman was a dick being proportions. Neither were wanted at the time they were let go.

Agreed, coaching is a hard job like a box of chocolates you don’t what you are going to get. People will make things racial when it is not but some are. Every one of the coaches we have had a some good seasons elsewhere.

The issue I took was that Patterson didn't do any due dilligence in the search. He wanted a black coach interiewed one and hired him. Then he set him up for failure by going cheap on the assistants. It was a rediculous process and resulted in the worst coach Texas ever had.

This is no reflection on Charlie as a person, He was a really good guy who was in over his head at Texas and got no support from the dumbass who hired him.

In the end patterson was proud of the job he did...he hired two black guys. That should tell you who Patterson was.

Pretty much did the same thing with Smart. All he wanted was his woke agenda, and he was proud of his hires. He set the athletic program back 10 years. He is proof that you can't just make a decision like this without a consideration for all candidates not just one race.

uhhh...

Seems as though the race card is getting thrown out by fans more so than an exact reason coming from UT. These are assumptions. Nobody knows, for sure, why they were hired suggesting a reason is what makes the Internet, the Internet. Ppl talking as if they have fact.

I agree, and I don’t care if the guy is white, black, yellow or polka dot. I am tired of losing to OU.

Just my opinion, it seems CDC is a hell of a lot better AD than Patterson was. Time will tell

Patterson was a cheap ass.
He thought more about the program making money, the winning would just happen.
That was totally obvious based on his previous job.

Remind me again, how that's worked out for Texas? We have the 5th most talented roster according to 247 and haven't sniffed the playoffs once. There is a reason we have had 3 coaches since we fired Mack. Let's not forget since 2010 we have had 4 ADs as well.

Texas was a trainwreck over the last 10 years.

RECRUITING MATTERS

RB Tavorus Jones, El Paso Burges (2022):

The West Texas tailback and Texas continue to trend favorably. UT wants two in 2022, and with Jamarion Miller looking unlikely, and TreVonte Citizen still scheduling visits, the staff has increased dialogue with the four-star.

Jones will visit Texas on June 18th-20th for an official visit, assuming the NCAA lifts the dead period ban.

QB Arch Manning, Isidore Newman (New Orleans, LA) (2023):

Texas’ lone commit for 2023, Rueben Owens, is quite the recruiter himself.

When the El Campo native isn’t winning gold in district track, he’s reaching out to other junior-to-be prospects about joining the class.

One guy he’s focusing on is Arch Manning. Manning is supposed to take a few unofficials this summer with a group of 2023 prospects and Austin is in the discussion.

The New Orleans native is the top rated passer for 2023 and holds Steve Sarkisian in the highest esteem. LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Clemson are thought to be the top competition for one of the most famous names in football.

Just a very quick note about freshman early enrollee WR Jaden Alexis: Texas has only had two full practices this spring, but it is interesting to consider a few things regarding the 4-star newcomer from Coconut Creek, FL. At today's media availability, Steve Sarkisian mentioned that Alexis is one of the players who is standing out to him the most thus far. Alexis had a very strong offer list, including Alabama, and clearly many on the new Texas staff knew Alexis from their respective times with the Crimson Tide in recruitment. Furthermore, when I went to Michael Johnson Performance in DFW prior to Spring Break, I asked Texas WR Jordan Whittington who had stood out to him most during winter workouts prior to spring ball, although I didn't report it at the time. His answer: Jaden Alexis, noting his speed and how well he's looked in strength and conditioning work. Things appear to be coming together in ways that point to Alexis being a player to keep an eye on this spring as a possible breakout. He's coming on strong at the very least; we'll see if it continues.

“I think we are rocking,” a university official texted me yesterday following the hiring of new basketball coach Chris Beard. “It’s telling Longhorn nation we are serious.”

The official, who was a key part of the hiring process, is one member of a group determined to make the University the best it can be in every sport.

The hope is that Beard “brings the excitement” of basketball back to the 40 Acres. And that hope can not be understated.

Even during a Big 12 basketball tournament championship season, Texas coach Shaka Smart and his teams failed to generate the excitement or fan fervor of teams from the early Rick Barnes era or even Tom Penders’ teams in the 90s. Smart’s poor record in the NCAA tourney certainly didn’t help either.

Beard, who led the Red Raiders to a national championship game appearance in just his second season at Tech, was a beloved figure in Lubbock. The fact that University of Texas officials opted to poach - or even attempt to poach - a coach of his magnitude from an in-state and intra-conference foe is telling of the importance UT officials are placing on the hiring of key athletic personnel.

It’s a move UT officials also made with the hiring of current athletic director Chris Del Conte. Del Conte previously served as AD at TCU helping the Horned Frogs gain admittance to the Big 12 and upgrading their facilities and coaches along the way.

So Beard is a perfect example of the university as a whole - not just the university’s athletic department - taking sports seriously. And when all of the powers that be, those not only in the athletic department but also those inside the Tower and those sitting on the board of regents, pull together for the sports programs, Texas has its best chance to reach the university’s full potential.

With Beard’s hiring, we are witnessing three distinct university groups working together as one. If this continues, I only foresee great things happening for UT athletics well into the future.

Sounds and looks much better.

Along with “you know what his weakness is, use it against him and beat him and make him better”

this requires players that are on the same level, real competition. This is what I worry about the most. You practice against a certain level of player, then you get on the field and meet an NFL caliber opponent and how do you react? If you were getting beat you go back to the sideline talk to people and work out someway to compete on their level. you must get the job done somehow . Every day every game.

IT Recruiting Matters: Two big visit weekends in June (2023 weekend set)

Steve Sarkisian and staff have established the weekend of June 18-20 as the big official visit weekend for the class of 2022.

A second big weekend has become the June 11-13 weekend with at least a pair of 2022 official visitors, but it will be the 2023 prospects set to be in Austin on June 12 that will have fans buzzing.

This morning, IT takes a look at the two big weekends in June.

June 11-13 weekend:
Official visitors scheduled include Evan Stewart (could move to the 18-20 weekend) and Cole Hutson. Stewart will make his first OV to Florida June 4-6, and has Texas A&M scheduled for June 24-26. Hutson will follow the Texas OV with trips to Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Inside Texas

While participating in a 7v7 tournament in New Orleans over the weekend, El Campo four-star tailback and Texas commit Rueben Owens wanted to go sight-seeing.

That led him to the home of the nation’s top passer for 2023, Isidore Newman’s Arch Manning.

“I was over (at his house) for a few hours on Saturday, just chilling, and talking a little football,” said Owens, the top rated tailback in Texas. “We’re super excited and can’t wait to be on the 40 Acres soon.”

Owens is competing in the area track meet in Sealy this week, but knows his role as recruiter for UT’s 2023 class is an on-going job.

“(Arch) and I were talking a little about Texas,” Owens said. “I was just really vibing with him getting to know my future QB1.”

What do Owens and the 2023 bunch converging on UT’s campus in early June want to see this summer?

“Really everything,” Owens stated. “I want to meet the rest of the staff. I want to see the weight room, locker room, and the Longhorn (emblem in south end zone) in the stands. I can’t wait to walk out of that tunnel on to the field.”

Owens is quietly becoming a leader of the 2023 cycle for Texas, and making a trip to visit his potential teammate was a step the right direction.

This is cool and all.... but...

Asking the RBs to get tough yardage without good blocking?
Are we really gonna have an oline like Alabama... no...

Two things:
1. Coaching spacing and going on the proper "snap count" is a HUGE advantage on the goal line. An offensive line that gets off the ball first has a much better chance of preventing penetration.
2. We must have a better offensive line. Bijan gets hit in the backfield and has to come to a dead halt and change directions on the goal line? Wont work.

Ehlinger worked not only because of his size but because he was very good at changing directions while going forward. He could avoid the penetration because he got a good look from the shotgun snap, we rarely just mowed a defensive line down, they had penetrated in various spots and same could avoid this if moving forward. The more laterally he moved, the better chance of a big loss. Our o line could not move people most of the time. So bring on Sark and better Oline play. I remain skeptical, but hopeful.

Do we have the horses? I dont know.

One of the reasons I want Thompson over Card is that heis much more physically ready to take hits than Card is. I love Card's ability to throw the ball but if e is always hurt because he can't take a hit is too important to overlook. With that said, the answer to the oline question in 2021 is no, we aren't going to just be great, it is going to take both time and improved recriting to get to the point where we have a line like Bama. It is possible, but not going to happen overnight.

With all that said, Texas still has a huge talent advantage over about 8 schools on our schedule. The only schools were we won't have htat huge advantage are blOwU, ISU, Arkansas, and TCU. Maybe OSU as well. Other than that I'd say Texas is going to have what you might call a Bama talent advantage versus schools like Kansas, KSU etc.

Roach

—As we first reported yesterday, Texas might be in the market for an addition to the 2021 class in Xavier Worthy. The former Fresno (Calif.) Central East wide receiver signed with Michigan but flirted with asking for an LOI release after signing day. Throughout his recruitment, Worthy flirted with the idea of flipping to Alabama because of Steve Sarkisian’s offense. I've been told that Worthy does indeed have interest in Texas, and frankly, I'd expect him to make a move quickly. I'm not sure what other schools are involved at this time, but Texas is in a great spot.

—Texas is still active in the NCAA Transfer Portal and it sounds like things are heating up with a potential target in Palaie Gaoteote. The former five-star prospect who signed with USC was ranked No. 15 overall in the 2017 class by the 247Sports Composite. Gaoteote left USC after injuries stripped away his last two seasons. Despite a strong freshman start that included 38 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, Gaoteote couldn’t stay on the field after that. By my math, Gaoteote could take a redshirt year for last season and still have a COVID year giving him 3 years of eligibility left. The connections of Jeff Choate and Pete Kwiatkowski help here as both know him well from their time recruiting the area. Michigan State will also be a factor as they recently signed his brother, but it sounds like the family would be supportive of Texas as the landing spot as well. We will continue to look into this one.
