Does anyone else have a problem with Horns down? I do not for the most part. If it is a Big 12 school, especially one we are playing that day, I am ok with it. The only time it truly annoys me, because I find it to be mindless and stupid, is when two teams are playing, neither is Texas, and the fans and even some players are doing Horns down.

I understand the Big 12 trying to rein in the taunting, wanting to keep the emotions from escalating into brawls or dirty plays. Still, some of it is a bit overboard.

The way I see it, Horns Up or Horns down, Texas is taking up residence in the mind......HOOK EM HORNS

Nah.
On that day, thats who you hate.
Its getting very old though.
Do something else that is perhaps, creative?

Other teams need to enlist the help of the Rice band in order to make fun of us properly.
On the other hand the Tomahawk Chop and "song" still exists... so repetition is addictive I guess.

Roach:

— Texas will host a top 2023 quarterback during the last week of July. I'm told that four-star 2023 Downey (Calif.) Warren High School quarterback Nicholaus Iamaleava. One of the top passers in the country for the 2023 class, Iamaleva is making a southern swing of visits during the last week of the month. He plans to try to make it to Ohio State's barbecue on the 29th and then make a swing through Texas, Texas A&M and LSU. It will be interesting to see if he comes away with an offer from the Longhorns as the 6-foot-5, 195-pound passer is highly pursued. Texas has been all-in on 2023 New Orleans (LA.) Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning early on, in that class and they haven't even looked at any other passers at the moment.

— Speaking of Manning, a college football personnel source I spoke with last week felt that Texas made the most sense for him at the moment. With Alabama and Clemson being the most likely schools in contention that we've heard, Austin probably provides the best situation, according to this source. With the amount of talent on the roster coming in and already playing at Alabama and a similar group of talent at Clemson, Texas provides a city where life is similar to New Orleans, an offense he's comfortable with that he feels suits him and a clearer path to playing time. Manning's head coach Nelson Stewart recently made a trip to Austin to see the city and spend some time with old friend Terry Joseph, and he told me that Texas is doing an incredible job conducting a complete recruitment. Obviously, they will have to show something on the field this fall, but I think Texas remains a dangerous contender for him.

— I exchanged a few messages with four-star Evanston (IL.) Township linebacker Sebastian Cheeks yesterday. As I've mentioned in the past, Cheeks has been dealing with quite a bit at home as one of his parents had some medical issues recently. Sources I spoke with around the country have said that the vibe with Cheeks definitely changed over the last month. In talking with Cheeks, it just sounds like his family issues and the pressures of recruitment are getting to him a bit. Right now, Cheeks is focusing on being with his family and trying to think through his decision clearly. I think there's a good chance he could push is timeline back into the fall so that he has time to make the proper decision and see how things work out with his family. I will say that I think this hurts Texas a bit as he might be more hesitant to go far from home with a sick parent. Michigan is a close option, but Wisconsin is also definitely a school to watch in that mix. Unless something changes, I don't think Cheeks makes a commitment this summer.

— On Sunday I'm heading out to THSCA Coaching School for a few days. This is the most-anticipated coaching convention in quite some time as more high school coaches than ever will be in attendance. Steve Sarkisian and Jeff Banks will both make presentations along with many other college coaches including Jimbo Fisher, Lincoln Riley and Nick Saban. Chris Gilbert will likely be with him as his status within the THSCA is still pretty strong. I'm interested to hear what Sark and Banks have to say to the high school coaches and what the feedback will be from the high school staffs in attendance.

IT on Manning. I wouldn't be surprised if Manning commits in the next few Months:

External markets are catching up to UT being a real player for Arch Manning. Good for them.

The giant sleeping in the market said UT might make the top-five for Arch and that Inside Texas was overplaying its hand but really UT is in the top two. Imagine not knowing that. While you wait for that Futurecast prediction to Clemson, we’ll continue.

Those in charge at Texas will never count out Alabama but Clemson is the main competition.

Buzz within the player community is very favorable to Texas. Player buzz is once removed from Twitter so we only give it a cursory nod. But you’d rather have it than not.

This is one of the rare ‘all hands on deck’ recruitments and we feel strongly the right people are involved which helps UT.

You already know how Texas profiles favorably to the family. We’ve broken the that down for months. Most outlets are all, “hey, he potentially likes Texas. It’s crazy.” We’re giving you the why and that’s how UT is in position to close this thing out.

If Malachi Nelson picks OU on the heels of Levi Holstein picking A&M, it will increase pressure on Texas to land Arch. You will pee yourself a little. But as you know, the Mannings are cognizant of the importance of committing to a school early to help build the class.

If IT ever ends up in a network where predictions are a real thing our collective first one might potentially in theory go towards Arch to Texas.

Im glad mr. stewart understands mr. coleman's statement because I dont.

Because mr. coleman is, in his opinion, "the most polished wr", it is not the reason he is not rated #1????

I guess they wont be teammates.
Or try to write an English paper for class together.

Is mr. coleman trying to say he is the most polished wr, therefore he should be rated #1.
Or because he is the most polished it is a detriment to his rating?
or what???

Apparently at least 685 people understand this and I am not one of them. I am often unsuccessful at translating the tweet conflicts. I take it to be a difference in opinion, I think I got that part correct.

Now that the Big 12 grant of rights is less than four years from expiration — and the league’s television partners, ESPN and FOX, declined to engage in preemptive contract negotiations to extend those deals — the first new realignment bombshell dropped on Wednesday during SEC Media Days with the Houston Chronicle reporting that the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners have reached out to the SEC to express interest.

I always thought Tech was tied to Texas politically. However, i don't see the SEC bigger than 16 at this time. Tech may be left standing at the podium. Same as OU and OU light.

Inside Texas:

To our knowledge the Texas and Oklahoma move to the SEC isn’t set in stone, but the chisels are mostly put up.

There is really no turning back, and I don’t believe this getting blown up is a real concern of those in charge.

Expect some really poorly officiated games this fall. I mean more than usual. Tangentially, don’t for one second think Big 12 ingratitude towards Texas isn’t one of the drivers of this. Money, of course, but also a lack of appreciation for what Texas means to the conference financial footprint.

If you’ve seen key moves made in the last half year and thought, “huh, that’s something I would do, not what Texas typically does,” that’s because the decision makers are guys like you, just with power and influence. It’s not the same old Texas. These guys want to compete and win at the highest level.

Over the last couple weeks I’ve wondered if the Sark hire was made with knowledge they were moving to the SEC. Right now I think that’s a strong possibility.

There’s some concern A&M could try and block the move, but that’s not reasonable from what we hear. They will certainly continue to try and scuttle the deal.

This move wouldn’t have made sense two years ago. NIL is a field leveler versus standard SEC recruiting practices and the expanded playoffs will allow for teams to make the playoffs despite brutal schedules.

This move is being made (assuming it goes through) with money and recruiting in mind, plus a pinch of spite towards the Big 12. I wouldn’t doubt there’s some entertainment value with A&M’s reaction, because again, the people in charge are just like you.

I'll be honest, not much of this sounds legit or makes any sense.

I mean, "expect some really poor officiated games this fall. More than usual."?

Bobby Burton:

In case you didn’t notice, the bomb that college football needed exploded yesterday.

On the heels of the 9-0 Supreme Court decision announced two weeks ago allowing a scholarship sports player to earn money from his “Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL)” , the intentions of Texas and Oklahoma to play ball in the SEC have been laid bare.

Why the SEC, why the change of heart from years back?

The major negative that most Texas power brokers saw with the SEC a decade ago - and what Mack Brown argued against for ever going to the SEC - has been all but eliminated because of the NIL. Mack also espoused the virtue of an easier path to the college football playoff, something some writers still seem to be too keen on.

As for the impact of the NIL, why should Texas fret about alleged or rumored under the table payouts to players when the most valuable payouts can now be made entirely above board?

But there is more than just one facet to this story.

**

The maneuverings of Texas Board of Regent chair Kevin Eltife will go down as legendary.

Not only did Eltife and Texas president Jay Hartzell have the foresight to begin their own process late last year, one they kept close to the vest and well before the outcome of the NIL ruling. But they also made the choice to look more deeply into some of the negative myths of the SEC and dig in further, which is something no previous administration had the will or wont to do.

The SEC was chosen by Eltife and Hartzell for multiple reasons, the keybeing geographical proximity for the travel of sports teams and Texas fans and the financial reward for the athletic department.

The ACC and Big 10 were both deemed viable but inferior choices.

As for the Big 12?

As a high-ranking official texted me yesterday, “it was getting boring around here.”

**

Make no mistake, the outreach of Texas and OU to the SEC is legitimate.

I have confirmed that up and down the list of Texas power brokers, those that are both official and unofficial.

What’s more, it’s interesting to me to see the unanimous approval of the action by those BMDs.

**

If Texas and OU head to the SEC, the conference will control all major media markets from the state of Texas to Florida.

As it stands right now, the SEC competes heavily in the two major Texas media markets of Dallas and Houston. But as long as Texas and OU remain in another conference, the SEC will never own those markets.

It’s quite different to own those markets, ones where college sports actually matter, from a pricing perspective. And that’s something Texas A&M must get its head around lest it explodes.

**

As for the Aggies, there is little doubt that they were the reason for the leak yesterday.

Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle first published the scoop. Brent has covered the Aggies for approximately 20 years and I have spoken with him on and off during that time.

While some on here may think Brent is an Aggie shill largely because he covers the Aggies, I absolutely don’t. I think he’s an excellent reporter and has been for decades. He just happens to be on the Aggie beat and has developed unparalleled sources in his time there.

That being said, there is little doubt that Zwerneman’s sources were from high up the food chain or he wouldn’t have run the story.

At A&M, it doesn’t get any higher than Chancellor John Sharp, a former state politician of some renown.

So what is the Texas take on this story becoming public yesterday?

“The Aggies engineered the release to create friction on the process…..which it does,” another high-ranking Texas source texted me yesterday.

The same source however also followed that with, “there is definite mutual interest (between Texas and the SEC).”

**

The timing of any such move is interesting. I’m not going to pretend to know all the ins and outs, because there are still more questions than answers

Whether that is about the Grant of Media Rights to the Big 12 through 2025 or notifying the Big 12 of Texas’ intention to move from the conference, the speed of these transactions can occur at a lightning pace or a snails.

One of Eric Nahlin’s key sources on this clearly believes things are moving faster, not slower.

**

There are so many aspects to this story that it’s hard to compile them all in one place or even digest them all in a single day.

But suffice to say, the game is afoot. The bomb has been dropped, and intentions have been made known.

What will the aftermath be?

I don’t know, but get ready for the ride because realignment is here whether you like it or not.

**

Not that I am or should be the final arbiter of such things. The Texas alumni and fan base will be.

But I for one applaud the move by Eltife and Hartzell. Let’s go.

Where do you stand?

year in year out a handful of 4 and 5 star recruits in Texas choose SEC schools simply for the SEC exposure

if this move happens, that alone will improve recruiting just in the state of texas. not only that, but now other recruits outside the state that choose SEC teams for the same reason will now have Texas as an option, who also is arguably the biggest brand in college football. what better way to get national exposure than to play in th SEC for the biggest brand in the nation?

that being said... they really need to start winning and sending more high draft picks to the NFL pretty quickly to take advantage of the likely boost to recruiting and value that this all brings, otherwise it all may fade quickly

i see both sides tbh

but recruiting would definitely improve if they go to the SEC

and considering the extra slack given to SEC teams by voters, an extra loss per year balances itself out. adding UT and OU to that will only add to the slack given. in a conference that stacked, you might be able to lose 3 games and still be serious contenders for the CFP

either way, if you want to win a championship, you gotta beat the best teams. and better recruiting gives you the best possible chance at that. it doesnt matter if you go 12-0 in a crappy conference then lose 30-10 in a high level bowl game, everyone knows you didnt belong there to begin with, and that wont work with highly rated national talents. otherwise teams like TCU and boise would be getting better classes than they are for their little stretch a few years back of doing that stuff.

but look at how many top texas recruits go out of state to SEC schools aisde from Bama? every year theres about 5-6 that go to LSU, 3-4 that go to georgia, and then about 3-4 more spread across ole miss, auburn and arkansas.

not to mention how many of the top 25 each year are picking ATM just to be on a mediocre SEC team. texas should be easily winning that battle, but ATM has been dominating those recruits lately simply because ESS EEE SEE

If you were just reading the tea leaves, you’d suspect Texas and OU have the necessary votes to gain admission into the SEC.

You would be correct.

However, the vote has not yet been taken which was made clear by somebody on the A&M side (allegedly) leaking this major development to the Houston Chronicle.

From our end, this is still all systems go. UT has the votes required and there doesn’t seem to be any road blocks or Sharp edges.

When will things truly pick-up via votes and proclamations? We’re targeting early to mid next week.

IT still does not know when UT would be playing ball in the SEC but we did hear sooner than 2025.

except that for the SEC it very clearly does matter, which is why every year 5-6 of the top 10 recruiting classes always are from the SEC, despite Bama being the only one with consistent success. auburn, ATM, LSU and georgia all basically had 1 or 2 good years over the past decade, and a bunch of the same scenarios as you just mentioned or worse. nearly every year tennessee has like a top 15-20 class, sometimes top 5, and they havent done jack in over 20 years.

I want to win a National Championship with a team of full of Rhodes Scholars, that aint happening it appears.
I will however, be on thug watch.
And if the school proper were to disassociate itself from the football team in someway I cannot picture, I would not mind that a bit.

And they are not going to be able to avoid playing us much longer. Wouldn’t it be something if the SEC made us play annually ? Exciting times boys !!!

It does sometimes.

Because the games can be absolutely depressing.

Well if SEC will do things behind Aggies back, they will do the same thing to us. I’m still in for the move, but don’t trust SEC anymore than I ever have.

Its a dance with the devil.

The recruiting violations in that conference and the power moves on the NCAA are legendary.
This conference neutered any role the NCAA would play in recruiting and player behavior rules.
They flat up challenged the NCAA and got them to back down on the most blatant violations.
Basically they dont pretend to have student athletes. They are the minor leagues with extraordinary ability to tie a UNIVERSITY, a SCHOOL, to their football to create a following. Every college has done this, but the SEC has excelled.

We used to do a good job at pretending. So did ATM. They have a very good engineering program, and excellent biological sciences, especially in the very important tie in to agriculture. And players actually used to go on and actually graduate in these fields and WORK in these fields. So I am told by the old wise ones.

But my model is outdated. I know a guy from Stanford who was an extraordinary linebacker (injured) and now is a really good geologist at UT. But Stanford wont win a National Championship. My problem is to try to insist on both and it is just not practical. These kids go to College to learn football. And then try to get in the NFL, CFL, or whatever indoor popup league happens every year. And I cant tear myself away from caring about rooting for UT knowing the truth.

rjv
07-23-2021, 09:38 AM
the college landscaping is changing and fans will have to adapt. but it may not be a pretty picture. the wealthiest schools with the largest alumni bases will eventually splinter off and create one or two super conferences with some semblance of what was once college football but it will look more like a professional league than the college game most of us grew up with. it's ALL about money now. A&M and UT will be fine and a rivalry will be rekindled (i imagine both teams will be in the west) but the big XII will either be left to try to create something that has any relevance or be absorbed by another conference. schools like UTSA will see if there is any room for them in the big XII and lots of smaller schools will do the same. those that are left out will likely be a part of some sub-par conference.

the SEC knows it can do what it wants and likely would only have pandered to 'bama. and the Ags will just have to deal with it. they wanted the SEC and they have the SEC. there is nothing they can do about it 'cause i'm sure the SEC's response would be to point to the door and say "well, you can see if the big XII will have you back".

good question. i'd imagine it'd be the usual suspects: UH, SMU, etc. but there's also the chance the conference gets absorbed into another one. there's even speculation mounting that there may wind up being around 40 teams that eventually splinter off from the NCAA and form one or two super conferences.

Inside Texas:

It sounds like Texas A&M is falling in line with their conference brethren.

Whether it was the money, with the Aggies awash in massive athletic department debt, that did the trick, or the simple realization that the Aggies just didn’t have the political pull they thought they did either within their athletic conference or at the Texas statehouse, the Aggies have somehow gotten on board with the Longhorns entering the SEC.

Given clear marching orders, various Aggie officials yesterday were forced into making a parade of insincere remarks, including one from the same ham-handed athletic director that darn near cried three days earlier about how A&M wanted to be the only SEC school in the State when he first learned the news.

I mean, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a spurned school ever get in line so quickly as the Aggies did despite their own obvious desires.

I can only hope if Texas were to ever be in such a position, the Longhorn brass never looks so childish as the Aggies have the last 72 hours. And childish is the only way to describe the behavior.

**

I am told that there are no foreseeable obstacles in front of the Horns and Sooners for joining the SEC.

There are no Texas legislature bills or motions worthy of any attention. And the votes are there from SEC schools.

Given that, the coming week will chart a historical new course for Texas Longhorns sports.

Inside Texas:

A few Big 12/SEC notes:

— We still believe Texas and OU will formally announce their intentions to depart the Big 12 on Tuesday.

— Anybody who has an opinion on whether or not this will be UT’s last season in the Big 12 thinks it will be. We have a couple people who say they don’t know and won’t opine. This being the last season in the Big 12 is the only thing that makes sense but it’s just not 100% foregone according to those we talk to. It’ll get figured out and the quicker that happens the better for recruiting purposes.

— We’ve heard Oklahoma State is wanting to join the SEC deal late but we’re not sure how that will be received. Oklahoma State and OU “decoupled” in recent years so any news or sentiment they’re shocked and chagrined about this is probably posturing. UT and OU might not be the last of SEC realignment news this summer, though.

— TCU is talking with members of the Pac 12 and ACC. They will have internal meetings on Monday to discuss their options going forward. From a television perspective, TCU would make sense as a team that could play in the 11:00 a.m. CST time slot. The Pac is going to need to have a presence in that time slot.

— The AAC has already said they’ll take just about everybody they can get.

— Texas Tech has been the most vocal objector behind the scenes to the Texas and OU move, but there’s no sense anything can be done to stop the inevitable. Because of that, other schools are loathe to join them in voicing dissatisfaction. It’ll be interesting to see where Tech ends up. The Pac may make some sense for the same reasons TCU does.

— Per sources on the OU side, it doesn’t sound like Big 12 deconstruction costs are going to be terribly expensive for UT and OU.

Please keep this stuff coming.
I have no idea dont have a subscription and really dont have a lot of time to really get down on this stuff like Texas4ever and TFloss and all the other contributors who know the HS around them with the good players. This really is about the only site I visit for CFB with the occasional look into a crazy Aggie forum for laughs.

What will be interesting in Lubbock is if they check for batteries in students pockets and purses at the gate

Way past the razor sharp tortilla stage.
Sling shots with ball bearings incoming.
You vile people helped ATM leave by beating them on a fairly consistent basis.
10-6 in Big 12 I think I saw?

I mean it sucks that UT and OU are abandoning ship with kids still on board but I get it. In the end, each school is a business and they really don't owe anyone anything.

Honestly, I'm thankful that Tech didn't get the Houston Cougar treatment these past 25 years and got to hang out with the cool kids for that time frame, even if we're about to have to sit with the geeks now over at the AAC lunch table

I think the best thing is for all Texas teams to succeed wherever they are. Also, if OK State is going to try to get into the SEC, I don't see why Tech couldn't. There have been some reports in which the SEC is considering gathering 20-24(?) Teams... starting super-conferences.

If the SEC were to also invite Tech and Okie lite that'd be awesome but c'mon it's a pipe dream. Tech doesn't bring any extra TV value to the SEC.

The best scenario for Tech that's actually realistic in all this would be to get in the Pac.

But even then, the PAC doesn't really need Tech either so I'm already preparing myself for worst case AAC level scenarios. :depressed

".....Big 12 sources told ESPN on Monday that the statement leaves some "wiggle room" and doesn't fully guarantee that the flagship schools would remain in the league through 2025. The possibility remains that they pay the $75-80 million penalty for leaving early, while also giving the required 18 months' notice, per Big 12 bylaws. Some have speculated that this is the first legal maneuver, and the possibility also exists that if the Big 12 dissolves before 2025, OU and Texas would no longer be bound to stay through the duration of the contract......."

A real threat would be "I have contacted our referee pool and we will be instituting a few minor rule changes in any games involving Texas or Oklahoma. It is an evolving situation when viewing the changing college football landscape. We will have these rules solidified once games begin. Changes are tough, good luck to our flagship Universities this upcoming season. "

One recent de-commit is having second thoughts on the decision, especially with his most likely school having such an uncertain fate.

I’ll never understand why prospects either de-commit or commit well before they need to. Unless you just absolutely know what you want to do, collect as much data as possible for as long as possible.

Personally, I've come to enjoy the annual games against Ol' Miss, Mississippi State and LSU so I hope this is the pod. I don't see any reason why UT couldn't be the one non-pod team that the Ags play every year. That's no different than now-in which each team plays a non-division team annually (it had been South Carolina for A&M).

I don't get why the schools leaving would have any extra bearing on officiating. Where would the pressure come from to be extra brutal?

I can see LSU being one.
So play LSU every year and make the pod of the old SWC/Big12 pod: Ark, ATM, OU, UT ? Im good with that. Bring back the old hate. Rivalry games. Why not have OU be a team ATM plays every year by being in the pod? Ags would rather play Mississippi's than OU? Why? If this is a tough conference lets make a tough pod.
