My thing with the rebuild is wtf has the last 3 yrs been. So look at a Lonnie his began to barely develop but even as NBA network just said he became a victim of the numbers game. So I'm ok with rebuilding but with all the young dude you have and all the ones you plan on drafting Mr. Wright how do more don't go by the wayside. You have the picks now but if next year you add another 2-4 players they will need to be developed so they cut into the current young development which hinders the rebuild.
In my opinion if your rebuilding you either need to have your one preferably 2 players to add around or sign or trade for a core player or two when caps open. If you just draft a bunch of kids it's going to be revolving door and then if they do develop you won't pay them. There's a thin line when you rebuild and you can get stuck in no mans land and be bad for a long time. Lole the kings.
When we had our big three we not only lucked out in a couple of ways but we also had some pieces in place and developed them around those piece to for a dynasty. Taking prospects for the sake of finding a diamond is dangerous and again best play available or not you hinder the new kids and old kids development. The way the NBA works today where the players run it you may not even be able to field a championship team as one blink and said player is demanding a trade.

He’s a fat 6’3” guard who doesn’t shoot the 3 ball. He doesn’t create defensive events, HAS a net negative rating, -13 for his career, and has a negative VORP. I've debated OKC fans (for some reason) about Dort. They think he's sliced gold. I pointed out how awful his advanced metrics are. They keep coming back to how he played Harden really well in a game seven a few years ago. But everyone plays Harden well in game sevens. Whatever.

Re: Dort, The tanking has an effect on his stats, both good and bad. I don't think he's a real 17 ppg on a playoff team, or as bad as some numbers are.
But fanbases who watch closely the players and teams that others don't because of tanking or lack of tv tend to be more correct than the people who just look at box scores or stats or see them 1-4 times a year against their team

I've read somewhere the Kyrie never thought they had a Head Coach, that Kyrie could be the coach in the court, or KD. I don't know if that's taken out of context.
I mean the Nets still have Simmons and Kyrie (theoretically), and potentially adding two more all-stars would still keep them very competitive

Crapshooting some trades that work salary wise from the contenders. Assuming the Nets want good players back given they won't want to tank as Houston owns all their picks.
Bucks
Holiday + Middleton for Durant + Joe Harris + Curry
Celtics
Jaylen Brown + Rob Williams + Theis for Durant
Sixers
I cant see the Sixers making anything work outside of Embiid and Harden. Doubt the Nets take on Tobias fucking Harris and Tyrese Maxey and picks.
Heat
Same with the Heat. Adebayo + Herro? Does Butler and Durant really get the Heat to a championship. Also I heard the Nets cant take Adebayo if they have Simmons on the roster (something about only being allowed one type of certain player acquired by trade).
Suns
Ayton (S&T) + Bridges + Johnson for Durant + Curry or Joe Harris depending on how much salary the Nets take from the Suns. Heard the Nets don't want Ayton though so the Suns have no chance without that.
Clippers
Could offer Paul George + Terrance Mann + 2023 and 2025 Firsts (OKC holds rights to swap)
Pelicans
Zion + Valanciunas + Graham or Nance for Durant
Lakers
AD + THT for Durant + fillers

Yeah it is but you don't really want to blow up your entire defense if your the Celtics given that's what got you to the Finals, even for Durant. You want to keep 2 of Rob Williams, Horford or Marcus Smart if you give up Jaylen Brown. Durant and Tatum is a deadly combo, but they won't win shit if you don't have a decent supporting cast + some respectable defense. Tatum isn't a tier 1 superstar like a Durant, Curry etc. which he showed in the Finals by shooting 35% :lol.

True. But could the Spurs then facilitate a trade for Durant. There's nothing the Spurs could offer outside of Murray and Lavine that would translate into any meaningful wins for Brooklyn that gets them out of the bottom 5 in the league and sends their high draft picks to Houston.
I also don't want the Nets to be too bad as I don't want the Rockets to get loaded up on high draft picks over the next few years.

After the draft, i was texting with friends on this issue. I said at the time I could totally see them extending him now. Obviously if they get a great return you trade the dude, but he really does fit what we are likely to be running and is a spur. We always prioritize these guys. If we extend him on a fairly reasonable deal he could always be moved in the future. I think he ends up staying now.

Losing Landale is significant. I'm not sure they dump Poeltl when there's only Zollins left. Even bringing in Jalen Smith doesn't help. There's developing young players and then developing them when there's absolutely no center to back up their perimeter defense.

I don’t think landale has anything to do with it IMO. I just think it really boils down to how the draft fell and having the good fortune of Atlanta being willing to overpay for DJ. The slate is clear and the market for a center like poodle in todays game although broad, is not willing to overpay. I agree with you though he could really help all these young long wings/guards develop better than the value of whatever first round pick we could get. Development is going to be king now for the next 3 years, and he seems to be the type of non ball dominate big that is a vet and a good team player who could really help these kids elevate over the next few years. On a reasonable extension he could be moved in the future if necessary. I am on board honestly

I think his trade value would actually go up in that scenario once he's trade eligible.
When would he become trade eligible if he signed an extension this off-season? Somewhere around mid-season?

The market shrunk significantly, that much is true. Teams that could have used a center: Charlotte drafted Mark Williams, Chicago got Drummond, NY signed Hartenstein. I can see two obvious scenarios that make sense: 1) Toronto, who has always tried to get him back and need a center. But they've been rumored to also be interested in several other centers (like Miles Turner). Also, a possibility may arise if Phoenix trades Ayton. They'll be looking to remain competitive, and he seems like a very good replacement for cheap. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he ends up in one of those 2 places.

My thoughts exactly. The question is what can we get of value from either of those 2 teams. We're getting to the point where we already have 2 + 1st round pick for the next 5 years. We trade one or more picks for a top prospect or vet, then we are no longer tanking are we ?

I agree on Toronto. I think they try and exhaust all options to get Gobert first via OG Anunoby + assets, then Jakob would be their fall back option. Could probably get a FRP from Toronto. Cant see the Raptors wanting to pay Ayton the max via S&T.
Still think Phoenix would give up a FRP (2025 or something) for Poeltl if they give up Ayton and especially if they also get Durant.
Utah may do the same if they trade Gobert for established players and build around Donovan.
Boston may want Poeltl if they get Durant and give up Rob Williams.
Wizards look like they are in win now mode and Thomas Bryant is leaving. Just gave Beal $250m. They would probably give up a FRP for Jakob.
A longshot might be the Clippers they're pretty thin at C with Hartenstein leaving. I think the Clips badly wanted to keep him but once Wall became available they used their taxpayer MLE on him and had no bird rights on Hartenstein. Zubac is all they have but he has atrocious advanced metrics and he's more of a backup level big. They do have RoCo who plays small ball 5. Unlikely but yeah.
Starting to get into long shots now :lol

In 2023 we have 2 picks: our own and Charlotte, which is protected 1-16 so it's quite possible it won't convey. In 2024 we only have one pick: our own. In 2025 we (likely) have 3 picks: ours, Chicago's (protected 1-10), and Atlanta's (unprotected). In 2026 we (likely) have one pick: ours OR Atlanta's (swap). In 2027 we have 2 picks: our own and Atlanta's. In 2028 we have one pick: our own OR Boston's (top 1 protected).
So basically we are not guaranteed to have multiple picks until 2025... we surely can use extra first rounders in the next 2 years.

I think y’all are over thinking things, if the price is fair plenty of teams would be interested in Jakob imo
I think you're overthinking things. The market for centers has indded shrunk and there's few teams that actually need a Jak anyway...
But interesting to see it went from "yeah, Charlotte wants Poeltl, he's def going there, 13 and 15 for Jak" to "yeah Toronto needs Poeltl, I think he's going there"...

Realistic targets still out there:
PG:
Campazzo
Sexton :puke
Schroder :puke :puke :puke
Other, taller people:
Jalen Smith
TJ Warren
Thomas Bryant
Luka Garza
Mitchell Robinson
I wouldn't mind something like Campazzo, Jalen Smith, TJ Warren and call it a day by renting out whatever space we need to spend to meet the minimum cap.
Humorous: Spotrac lists Joe Wieskamp as 27.8 years old. https://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/small-forward/

Adams was totally unplayable in the playoffs because he can't move. Poeltl has his issues and limitations too but he's a very good switch defender, he'd fit well on the Grizz.

Poeltl can do things defensively that Adams can't tbh (defending the perimeter/switching/defending the PnR). Without JJJ they don't have a big who can.

Yeah Memphis will miss Jackson especially with rim protection. He erased a lot of their perimeter defensive issues.
Looking at rim protection metrics JJJ was second in the league after Jarrett Allen at DFG% inside 6 feet (minimum 30 games and 4 DFGA per game). Jakob has the highest DFGA per game at 8.6 :lol because of how shitty the Spurs perimeter defense was probably.
Adams 60.5% and 5.8 DFGA
Jakob 55.6% at 8.6 DFGA
JJJ 49.6% at 5.1 DFGA

I’m okay with moving Murray if they show us they are fully committed to a tank/rebuild. I’m still not convinced they are so the next few weeks will be telling. Not wanting to eventually pay Murray as a motivating factor is still tough to swallow.
Murray trade aside he has had a very mixed track record at best. This past trade deadline was the only time he has shown any real prowess.
Maybe I should reserve judgment until he gets a chance to be his true own man when Pop retires…

I was the one that asked. I was saying that he put up some big numbers towards the end of the season, but it was for a tanking team, so I wasn't sure how good he was. I will still ask, is he actually any good? Seems Portland thinks so, wow, what a contract.

It took him 3 years to finally choose a direction and we can’t be sure till we see how he spends this 35mm in remaining cap.
I was on record last fall saying we are closer to another “rebuild” than we are a true playoff team when most thought we were only a player away from being a solid playoff team.
The Murray trade makes some sense at tbis point but it didn’t have to be this way if we choose a direction sooner. We could have been tanking AND had a building block in Murray.

I find myself in agreement with much of this... in hindsight if we had done this earlier we could already have had the talent to have put beside DJ instead of pursuing mediocrity and ending up a 10th seed. I do wonder though how much of that was Wright and how much of that was Pop pursuing his win total? I feel like Wright didn't really have a choice in that...

I hear you. I’ve been frustrated with what feels like a lack of direction and strategy from the team since Leonard left. But it feels like a new and old guard tension internally, more than a Wright thing. We’ll see.
The last year gave me a lot of hope that the team is picking a path and starting to execute on it starting with moving White. Spurs maximized value on both, and hopefully will do the same on Jakob here soon.

Thanks for the clarification . We are sitting pretty decently compared to previous years though and we will hav more options.

Ages back, I wrote reasons behind most decisions at the time of Leonard's trade. The forth wall is a hard thing to get by. But lot of things went against the spurs for how they handled Leonard. If they just made a decision to trade him before free agency, I think the spurs make a few decent playoff runs until LMA falls off the cliff.
