that's a good trade for Denver. Replaces MPJs shooting and shed 17 million in salary. That should open up the full MLE for them. Why in hell didn't they go for D-Lo and LaRavia?

Wow. So much for MPJ won't get traded talk as their owner (Stan Kroenke) and him went to the same school that was said a lot last season. Then after the season there was word that they tried to trade him to anyone and everyone during the season by no one wanted him due to all the stuff in his medical record.

From a non-Spurs perspective... I hope Shams is about to drop the hammer on some major trades that shake up the league. He heard the criticism during the draft and is here to make amends with CHAOS "The waiting is the hardest part." With the Spurs I have no idea what to expect. Could be big , could be small. We need a big and some shooting. Hope they are part of Shams prediction. The fact that nothing's been done so far might be a good sign.

i dont understand this. ok, so if we traded for Lauri last summer, his salary was 18 mil. and then if we extended him or re-signed him as a free agent, he would have gotten basically the same deal he has now anyway. so we'd still be sitting on Lauri with a 45+ mil number for the 25-26 season.
if it made sense to get him last year, it would have been with the expectation that he'd be more than a 1 year rental... would have re-signed for functionally the same deal he has now. so if it made sense then, it makes sense now. its not like his higher salary makes putting together a deal hard. it would still be something like Vassell/KJ, just like the Durant structure
25-26 isn't the problem: 27-28 and 28-29 are.
Let me make a couple of assumptions:
1. The Spurs are willing to go into the luxury tax but not into the first apron
2. The Spurs core for 2027-28 is Victor + Fox + Castle + Harper
3. Victor will get the 30% supermax in 2027-28
4. Fox signs for the 30% max with 8% raises with the extension starting in 2026-27
2026-27 cap = 170.11
Fox base salary on extension = 51.03
Fox yearly raise = 4.08
2027-28 cap = 187.12
2027-28 first apron = 237.06
Fox 2027-28 = 55.12
Wemby 2027-28 = 56.14
Wemby annual raises = 4.49
Castle 2027-28 = 12.67
Harper 2027-28 = 13.61
Wemby + Fox + Castle + Harper core = 137.54
Markannen 2027-28 = 49.82
2027-28 Core + 2027-28 Markannen = 187.36
2027-28 First apron - (2027-28 Core + 2027-28 Markannen) = 49.7
So $49.7 million to spend on the remaining 7-10 roster spots after 5 guys paid for. Pretty tight. But the real problem is in 2028-29
Wemby = 60.63
Fox = 59.2
Markannen 2028-29 = 53.54
Harper = 17.17
Wemby+Fox+Markannen+Harper = 190.54
2028-29 cap = 205.84
2028-29 first apron = 260.76
So now you're left with 70.22 million to sign Castle and ill out the rest of the roster. Let's say Castle is either worth only 20% of the cap or takes a paycut to 20% of the cap instead of the 25% max.
2028-29 Castle @ 20% cap = 41.17
So now you're at $29.05 million to fill the rest of the roster after those five. Doesn't seem workable to be paying Lauri after getting Fox.

I like that deal for Denver, they need to go all in for Jokic prime and live with the consequences for a couple years after he retires.

Sure, but that really doesn't change things... it's just gravy. If they were picking #8 instead of #2, then they would have made moves to build a roster to compete for a Top-6 seed? That doesn't make sense. If anything, getting Harper has freed up some assets (like Vassell) you can move to upgrade the rest of the roster.
But the Spurs appear to not be very concerned about PF and backup C... which is going to make it difficult to compete in the west. So, what was the point of getting someone like Fox? There is no need to acquire a Top 30 player so that you can compete for a play-in spot.

Joe Dumbars signing Looney kind of makes sense. They have 6 guys for the 4/5 spots now. One of which (Zion) only plays 20 games a year. Although Tre and Herb can play some 4 they really can’t this year cause Pels don’t have any wings behind them.

I don’t mind it. I think they view him as the long term back up for those 4 years. They should look to add players for those 4 years where Harper and Bryant are on rookie contracts and Fox is on the max. That‘s the window you need to line up contracts for. Hope it’s frontloaded.

Spurs To Sign Luke Kornet To Four-Year Deal
June 30th, 2025 at 6:30pm CST • By Luke Adams
Free agent center Luke Kornet will head from Boston to San Antonio, according to Shams Charania of ESPN, who reports (via Twitter) that the Spurs and Kornet are in agreement on a four-year contract worth $41MM.
The fourth year of Kornet’s new deal will be a team option, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).
:lol that's what we say about every one of our players and they end up being here past due their expiration date.
You're not wrong :lol
But the fact is with the new apron rules, you need to have these mid-level, tradeable pieces if you hope to do any negotiating or navigate the salary cap.
We'll see how Kornet fits, but if he doesn't...then in a couple years, you've got a decent center on a 2/20 contract and I'm sure a lot of other teams out there will be in the same spot we are now.

Team option on year 4 makes a declining structure even more likely. Then it's about $31-32M guaranteed over the first three years.
Kornet's age also makes a declining contract sensible. A player's subsequent contract is limited by the final year's salary if Bird rights are involved, but this is likely the largest contract Kornet will ever get since he will be 33 or 34 at the end of it.

It has already been reported that the 4th year is a Team Option. So basically, it's potentially a 3yr/~$30M contract.
Spurs have a bunch of picks that are enhanced by swaps... but beyond that, what do we have to offer in a Giannis chase? Harper and Castle would be the big prizes for MIL. Do you think we'll offer up one or both of them?
I can't see a scenario where the Spurs go for a model that would be Giannis/Fox/Wemby where we're filling out the rest of our roster with cheap bodies with no draft picks to fill the talent pipeline. Just very much not a RC/Wright/Pop approach
I'm looking in the comparison view. Who can beat what the Spurs have?
I don't see the Spurs offering any of the young guys. Fox likely has a decade left of near all star play. I was against him because of size and nature of his game depleting but he does have quite a bit left in the tank still and is a proven playoff performer. You add Giannis, the best player in the world and Wemby who's quickly entering that conversation.
Then you add Harper, and Castle as your guards. Hopefully Bryant and Sochan become something on the wing?
That's a legitimate 5-7 player core for the next 5 years at least. Everything else is moveable and you won't have many minutes outside of that core left in the playoffs that aren't straight role players.
I'm just saying I see the vision of they went that route. Picks aren't as important when you have a set 7 man rotation. Look how little half our picks play with the 7 man rotation we have now and we aren't even good.
This only works, once again, if there is legitimately no other suitors who can match what the Spurs can which I honestly don't see.

Best backup of Wemby's career...and Spurs two-big lineups are gonna be crazy fun to watch.
i don't think we will ever see that, we have too many guards. Maybe if sochan gets injured

I didn't want NAW but damn sucks seeing him in ATL
I'm perfectly ok with the move. But i don't think kornet has the kind of reputation that you can move him easily if he fails
That can be said about basically every player in the NBA. At a certain point, the Spurs have to roll the dice on someone, and it's not like this is some huge, cap-breaking move.

Wright should call Dumars and tell him having those Hawks picks would be great for the Pelicans since Hawks own theirs.
Throw in a Keldon/Vassell for Murphy/Herb swap.
NAW for the MLE is a brutally good deal

Trae/Daniels/NAW is a pretty filthy 3 man guard rotation even if nothing comes of Bufkin
then they have Risacher/Jalen Johnson/Okongwu/Newell/KP
thats a nice roster, and they have extra draft capital from the dumbass pelicans trade-up to 13

NAW's deal was a bit more than MLE, so the hawks have traded for him with the DJM trade exception. meaning they still have the full MLE if they wanted to make more noise

I’m calling it early Hawks have moved into the bottom of the top tier in the East with Cleveland, New York, Orlando. They’ve separated themselves from the next tier which is mostly teams with injured star players (Indiana, Boston, Milwaukee,) plus Miami, Detroit etc.
It’s going to take a Trae Young injury for them not to be top 4 seed.
