tough call... the instinct is to go with the team that doesn't have an all-time great quarterback. but GB hasn't been that great away from home and you'd probably be able to run on them. Detroit's D should be able to travel well, and megatron in a dome is a wildcard.

This is true. But given Suh's history he's gonna get shot down. I see this game going down akin to the 2011 Wild Card when Detroit lost 28-45 vs New Orleans.

McClain trade finalized

The terms of the Cowboys’ July trade to Baltimore for LB Rolando McClain have been finalized.

The Ravens will receive the Cowboys’ sixth-round draft pick in 2015 because McClain played more than half (61.9 percent) of Dallas’ defensive snaps. The Cowboys get the Ravens’ 2015 seventh-round pick.
McClain will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

Gotta give staff credit. Both Frederick and Hitchens were criticized by draftnicks as "reaches" both have played above draft expectations. Caliborne/Escobar is the only recent head-scratcher. Not that Esco hasnt shown brief flashes but where we took him with the players left on the board was puzzling. Mo is Mr.Glass hasnt been healthy for one full camp or season.

Agreed. Fred Beard is a stud. Hitch is a good LB and should improve on his rookie campaign. I'm very very disappointed in Mo Claiborne. Cowboys graded him 2nd to only Prime Time? I have high hopes for Escobar. His hands are softer than Kim Kardashian's ass. He is underutilized because Captain Witten is still pretty good.

Major Issues:

1) Will McClay. Can we keep him? He's the one responsible for constructing the Great Wall of Dallas 2.0 and finding cheap FA who are playing above their heads (esp on defense). I'm hearing the Jets are after him. They got deep pockets like Jerry.

2) Marinelli. I'm hearing he might bolt for Tampa Bay and reunite with Lovie Smith. Hopefully Jerry can convin$$$e him to stay.

3) Linehan. He has done so much for Dallas. The offense is efficient and eats up clock. His offense has protected our defense all year. Hopefully no one offers him a HC job in the offseason.

4) Re-signing Ro McClain. Will he go to the highest bidder? Defense has been physical all year. Starting with him. He's a thumper that sets the tone. Would love to see him with Lee and Hitch form one of the best LB corps in the NFL next year.

5) Re-signing Dez. Can they meet his contract demands? He had a great year. Franchise tag?

6) Will they pay DM29? Or will they sign AP or draft Gurley? I like Melvin Gordon too.

I know it's early but I worry about stuff like that, now that it appears like we are having a resurgence. Go Cowboys! :D

Agreed. Marinelli has rejuvenated a supposed depleted defense, and maximized the potential of a bunch of unknown young players. He needs to stick around.

3) Linehan. He has done so much for Dallas. The offense is efficient and eats up clock. His offense has protected our defense all year. Hopefully no one offers him a HC job in the offseason.

This is a real possibility.

I don't think the Cowboys will keep him and Carter. One or the other. Cowboys are gonna have a tough enough time finding the cash to pay Dez, and if they decide on keeping DeMarco, someone is gonna have to go. Plus King Carter has come on strong over the last month, I'm sure some teams have taken notice.

5) Re-signing Dez. Can they meet his contract demands? He had a great year. Franchise tag?

Dez ain't going anywhere for the next couple of years at least. Jerry has already confirmed the franchise tag will be used if a deal can't be reached. That would land him about 24 million over the next two seasons, but could also cause him to get butthurt and cause problems for the team. I think Jerry will pay him..they can't let past horrible contracts on people like both Roy Williams, Marion Barber, and Terrance Newman take away from Dez' worth. Pay the man, he is gonna continue to dominate CB's for the next 5 years at least.

6) Will they pay DM29? Or will they sign AP or draft Gurley? I like Melvin Gordon too.

RB is the most interchangable position IMO, while I would like to hang on to Murray I don't think it would be a huge dropoff to the offensive production if they continue to run the ball albeit with more of a running back by committee approach. Rookies RB's regulary impact teams, so if they draft correctly we should be ok.

I know it's early but I worry about stuff like that, now that it appears like we are having a resurgence. Go Cowboys! :D

another pick I hadn't mentioned. Hasn't done much before Sunday. Tough to be a rookie and be gurt your first camp. Same happened to Mo Claiborne and he has never "caught up" ...but at least Dlaw made a huge play. His pressure can be key to beating GB. What a great draft even if no one else pans out ZMartin, Hitch and Dlaw have contributed to making Divisional round of playoffs. hopefully Street turns out to be a player as well ...

Not upset at the loss at all tbh, they played a good game today. I don't blame the shitty call for the loss..I blame moving away from the run in the second half, and the DeFumble. Either way, we went from being expected to be one of the worst teams of all time, to second round of the playoffs, with an O-line that emerged to top 3 in the league with an average age of 24. Here's my thoughts on the roster looking forward to next season:

QB - Romo - Finished with his most accurate rating yet, at 3,700 yards, 34 TD's / 9 INT. Should benefit from more time off and the back shouldn't be a concern at all next year. Expecting a big year next year as well. Weeden is absolute garbage, and should be out of a job soon. We need a reliable backup veteran in the offseason.

RB - DeMarco has one flaw, and it was on display today. He's a great running back overall, and finally proved he can play a full season w/o major injury. He's going to demand a shit load of money, and as much as I'd like to go into next year knowing the RB position is solid, I'm not taking him over Dez. Getting good RB's in the draft are possible in nearly every round, so we should be ok if we do part ways with Murray. Randle should see a big jump in production with more touches..hell, Avante (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=33483) and his fat, slow ass would probably net 1000 yards behind this line.

FB - Tyler Klutts was serviceable, but the Cowboys don't really use a lot of lead block schemes and honestly don't really even need a FB. He'll probably be back though.

WR - Dez MUST be resigned, fuck that franchise tag bullshit. Pay that man what he's worth. Can't fuck him because of bad contracts Jerry inked 5 years ago that they are still feeling the impact on. They also need to start planning for an extension for Terrance Williams too, he's a legit "Alvin Harper" to our "Michael Irvin" in Dez. This year Williams ran better routes, he flashed speed they say he didn't have coming out of Baylor, and he had some clutch catches down the stretch of several games. Devin Street had a year to learn the playbook, and I expect him to push Beasley for 3 next year.

LT - Tyron Smith. 23 years old. All-Pro. Locked up for 8 more years. Nuff' said.

LG - Ronald Leary is only 25, and is probably the strongest OL the Cowboys have. He was solid this season, and I expect him to return. He wasn't beat very often, and routinely stood up some of the better opposing lineman.

C - Travis Frederick is also 23, and is gonna be even better next season. Center is solid for the foreseeable future.

RG - Zack Martin. 23 years old. All-Pro. Go ahead and sign his 10 year deal now.

RT - Area of need in the draft. Free is not very good, and is the oldest starter on the line. Parnell is ok as the backup. The Cowboys should look for value in the 3rd round this summer if the best available is not a defensive lineman with the 3rd pick.

DE - Major area of need. The Cowboys need to generate some sacks and get some pressure on the edge to take their game to the next level. Spencer was solid, but not great. He's getting older, so his successor needs to be drafted this year. D-Law is gonna be better next year as long as he stays healthy in camp, so with a top rookie prospect and a group of late picks spent at DE, I expect this to become a strength for the Cowboys next season.

DT - I talked shit about Crawford early this year, but he has shut me up. He is great at pressuring the QB, and is tall enough to routinely swat passes. Hopefully he can boost his sack numbers next year.

LB - If Lee doesn't get a season ending paper cut during media day, I expect this LB corp to be scary next season. The Cowboys got some choices to make, they have a good mix of LB's, and can't afford to keep all of them. Rolando McClain started the year looking like one of the best LB's in the game, but faded as the season went on. Either way, he played smart, and hit hard. He added some size and toughness to the group. Ro is good against the run with his size and strength, but has also shown he can drop into coverage and defend the pass as well. Bruce Carter excels in this area too, but I do not believe the Cowboys can afford both. Do you risk it and pay McClain over Carter in hopes that he doesn't become a head case again, or deals with more injuries? Hitchens proved to be a great pick in the 4th round, and is going to be a one-two ball hawk tandem with Justin Durant next season. Cowboys will draft at least one LB, they always do.

SS - Barry Church didn't have that "wow" play this year, but he was all over the place. He is a reliable tackler, and is quick to make a move on the ball. He led the team with 77 tackles I believe he has earned his spot in the defense. :tu

FS - Not a big fan of Wilcox, or the converted athletic player project approach. For every nice tackle he made, he took a poor angle on another. We need an upgrade here, if one is available in the later rounds, do it. Would be nice to spend a top 3 pick on FS IMO, but D-Line is a bigger need. Maybe next year.

CB - Hopefully we have seen the last of Mo'. Sterling Moore and Tyler Patmon combined get a fraction of the pay of Claiborne, and played well enough to be brought back for another year. Scandrick quietly played some of the top defense on the team, and was reliable throughout the season. He played with balls, and didn't put up with dirty bullshit from the opponent even though he's one of the smaller guys on the field. He got into more scuffles this season that anyone else on the team. Seems meaningless, but it fires up the team. Something needs to happen with Brandon Carr, he has been absolutely horrific this year. He has probably the worst contract on the team at this point IMO as well. Nearly every big play in the backfield this year was with Carr out of position playing catchup. Aikman claimed he held Megatron to a quiet game last week, but that's bullshit, I don't recall seeing him do anything special. Restructuring his deal should be one of the forst things Stephen Jones addresses this summer. The Cowboys will add a couple of CB's in the last couple rounds IMO.

Specialists - Kicker is lined up for the several years. As good as Dan Bailey is overall, he gets iced pretty easily. I wouldn't have much faith in him from 40 with the game on the line. Chris Jones was good enough at punter. The Cowboys may look to someone else to handle kickoff and punt returns, Dwayne Harris regressed big time this season. He spent way to much time moving laterally this season, he just didn't see the field like he did two seasons ago.

Anyways, it was fun this year fellas, looking forward to next season :toast. What do you guys think about the state of the roster moving forward?

yeah sounds like nothing happened :lol

per rotoworld:

NFL Media has produced the incident/investigation report regarding a 2011 incident in a Wal-Mart parking lot that involved Dez Bryant.

This is the incident that has been generating headlines and wild rumors over the last 24 hours. The report says an unknown person called police to explain a black female was "being dragged from one vehicle to another vehicle" by a black male. The vehicle the woman was dragged from was a Mercedes registered to Bryant. When police arrived on the scene, the alleged victim was not there. Soon after, she arrived in a Bentley with Bryant and said she had an argument with a man named Alex Person and that she was not assaulted in any way. The police let everyone go, determining there was no offense. It remains unclear if there is any video of the incident, although most Wal-Marts have security cameras. You can read the full incident report at the link below.

The Cowboys (http://www.nfl.com/teams/dallascowboys/profile?team=DAL) have balked at handing Dez Bryant (http://www.nfl.com/player/dezbryant/497278/profile) a long-term contract extension with significant financial guarantees, in part because of their lack of off-the-field trust in the Pro Bowl (http://www.nfl.com/probowl) receiver. With no new negotiations scheduled between Dallas and Bryant's agents, Tom Condon and Kim Miale of Roc Nation, the franchise tag is almost a certainty.

In November during an appearance on NFL GameDay Morning, I reported on six separate incidents (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000424785/article/cowboys-concerned-about-dez-bryant-off-the-field) since 2011 of police being called to Bryant's home in DeSoto, Texas. None of the incidents I described, based on reporting using police records, resulted in any arrests, but they are emblematic of why the Cowboys (http://www.nfl.com/teams/dallascowboys/profile?team=DAL) are concerned about Bryant's behavior and some of the people he has associated with.
I have learned via another open-records request that in mid-2011 there was an additional incident involving Bryant. A report filed by the Lancaster (Texas) Police Department (http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/photo/2015/02/26/0ap3000000474214.pdf) described the response by an officer to "an unknown disturbance" in a Walmart parking lot during the early morning of July 11. Vehicles registered to Bryant were at the scene in the parking lot, and Bryant later arrived in another car, when he was spoken to by a Lancaster PD officer. Upon further investigation, "it was determined that there was no offense" and "all parties were advised they were free to go."

Although Bryant is clearly a large part of Dallas' offense and a key to the team's continued progress, the pattern of off-the-field issues is one reason the Cowboys (http://www.nfl.com/teams/dallascowboys/profile?team=DAL) haven't improved their long-term extension offer of $114 million over 10 years with a $20 million guarantee, an average of $10 million a year during the initial six years and a signing bonus of just $5 million.

I agree, this is too perfect of timing for a bullshit rumor like this to emerge. It's stupid how the Cowboys are quick to lock up their premier players with long term deals, but want to play hardball with arguably the best receiver in football.

he also took care of tyron smith, everyone's contract negotiations aren't the same. most cowboys fans would like dez to be signed long term as soon as possible but thinking jerry leaked a 5 year old story just to lower is value is asinine. if that was the case, dez would be vocal about not wanting to play for the franchise anymore. he would demand a trade. he hasn't done either. its in both parties best interests to get a deal done and it will happen before the season starts.

Well he's clearly not even close as a runner.....less yards in more games. But he seems OK catching the ball out of the backfield, and you said he can do blitz pickup. Seems like OK value but no Murray obv. We gotta draft or find someone solid on a practice squad somewhere, because there no way this dude stays healthy.
i mean, the cowboys line should make it easier for him... but he's never had good lateral agility to make cuts in the lane, and his vision is non-existent. he usually gets the carry and runs straight, no matter where the hole is :lol

if the line does clear a hole and he goes untouched for the first 4-5 yards, he can actually get rolling and start breaking tackles at the second level. he's just one of the worst in the league at the first level. his best bet right now would just be a 3rd down/passing down back because at this point his best asset is his pass protection. he has good receiving skills out of the backfield, but even then, he needs blocking to spring him, he's not great at making guys miss. does have a decent stiff arm if guys take a less than ideal angle

You guys landed hardy

According to Pro Football Talk (https://twitter.com/ProFootballTalk/status/578280570133835776), Hardy receives a one-year contract that can be worth up to $13.1 million.
Hardy’s contract breaks down to a $750,000 salary, a workout bonus of $1.3116 million, and $9.25 million in per-game roster bonuses, according to Pro Football Talk (https://twitter.com/ProFootballTalk/status/578283949362937856).
The agreement includes $1.8044 million in incentives based on sack totals.
Dallas will not be able to use either of their franchise or transition tags on Hardy next year, which means he’ll be a unrestricted free agent again in 2016.

assuming a 6-game suspension, i think the max he could make would be 9.65

Romo's base for 2015 will be $1 million with the other $16 million moved into a signing bonus. It's, at most, a 6 game suspension. It's not like he's going to be suspended for 12 games or season long suspension. That gives him 10 games to make an impact. I agree that Murray is a better back than McFadden, and I think the Cowboys will address the RB area via the draft. There are plenty of good backs in this draft. While others are on the Peterson bandwagon, I'm not sold on the Cowboys being players in acquiring his services.

You can argue WR is just as replaceable. Also, Murray led the league in yards after contact so it wasn't all the line. Every good or great RB has a good or great line at some point. Doesn't take anything away from the RB. A RB who can pick up blitzes, break tackles, and catch out the backfield isn't really overrated. However, thats fine. It's the Cowboys saying how DeMarco is always hurt yet willing to pay Peterson big money being that he is older, and has 1100 more carries.

manufan10

I agree with this from Blogging the Boys:

While the Cowboys have now answered all the immediate salary cap questions, one thing that the Romo restructure does not mean is that Dallas is looking to figure out a way to acquire Adrian Peterson. While the thought of a healthy and productive AD operating behind the Dallas offensive line is intoxicating, it is also extremely unrealistic. The costs are simply prohibitive. Even if you disregard the repeated assertions from the Minnesota Vikings (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/minnesota-vikings) that they have no intention of parting ways with Peterson, despite his apparent discontent, the team would almost certainly not simply cut him if they did give up on having him play. They would demand draft picks, which is not something that the current brain trust in Dallas would seem likely to go for. And Peterson has shown absolutely no willingness to take a lower deal than the $43 million that he is now scheduled to earn over the next three seasons. With the way Dallas has handled things financially so far, it is hard to imagine them committing those kinds of resources for a running back, not matter how superb he has been in the past. And despite his remarkable durability, Peterson is 30. Even he is going to lose a step at some point, and it would be a stupid bet that he would not do so on that kind of a contract.

Why would we want to let one high priced RB go to sign another? Runners aren't worth big bucks anymore, sign em to 5 year deals as rookies and move on to the next after IMO. That 13 million is for draft picks and unsigned FA's.

LkrFan

I'm lukewarm on AD. He's a beast, but like others have pointed out, he's 30, and we can spend the $13M on filling holes (especially on defense).

McFadden with a rookie (hopefully Gordon or Gurley) will be able to get it done, cheaply. We also need more rushmen, CB, and S (to hopefully start at FS, move Church to the bench, and Wilcox to SS).

There are many moves we need to make, Peterson is not necessarily one of them.
