I watched a bezillion documentaries:
Amanda Knox - pretty good. kind of like an extended version of 20/20 or something. Seems like they made the right decision but she also does have something "off" about here.
6.5/10
The Witness - about the murder of Kitty Genovese but maybe more so about her brother's quest to find out what really happened. he seems bitter because according to him, he volunteered for the Vietnam War based on the reporting of the story. And had both legs blown off.
6/10
The Square - follows a few characters from the Arab Spring through a couple of elections. I didn't really know much about all of it at the time so this was pretty educational. Especially in showing how the Muslim Brotherhood took advantage of the situation.
7/10
The Wolfpack - 5 or 6 brothers in Manhatten who were never allowed to leave the house until they were in their late teens. So they watched a ton of movies and would pass the time re-creating them. In spite of the good reviews, it was really boring.
3/10
Cartel Land - tells the stories of a few vigilantes in the U.S. and in Mexico. The story of the guy in Mexico was pretty amazing. Was able to start in his hometown and arm the populace and then retake several cities that were controlled by the cartels. Some good footage of actual battles vs. the cartels.
7.5/10
Cropsy - might have mentioned this already. tells the story of a serial killer in 1970-1980 New York. Oh yeah...I remember mentioning this.
Cocaine Cowboys - talks about the cocaine trade in late 70's / early 80's Miami. Had some interviews with some of the major players including the primary hitman for Griselda Blanco. Kind of got slow but not bad.
6/10
Of all the above, the only ones I felt were worth the time were, Cartel Land, Cropsy, and the Square. And maybe Amanda Knox.

I watched a run of the mill "The Game" type movie. "Happy Birthday" from 2016. ---------SPOILERS--------- Two guys go to Mexacali for one of their birthdays. He just found out his gf was cheating on him when the cheater left a note on the underside of the toilet seat. "She didn't tell me she had a bf until this morning." He storms out and the road trip to Mexico begins. Long story short both of the guys are kidnapped by two beautiful women who then handcuff them to a bed in a shit hole motel room, torture them and demand ransom for them. A Mexican drug lord oversees the kidnapping. They're continually drugged and put upon by all manner of torture from beatings, cross dressed, all the way to gang raped by a humongous black dildo and then murder as the jilted one frees himself and kills both girls. Turns out the jilted one's friend paid for the entire experience.
The kicker? When the guy finds out he was duped and it was all a lie, what's the first question out of his mouth? "Was my girlfriend cheating on me part of the con?":lol
The Salvation 9/10

Dad wanted to see Kong... so I treated him for a belated birthday.
Pretty generic. Some really cool visuals, but slow motion was overdone for fights. Most of the acting was wasted and unlike the previous Kong, you never really care about the beast.
Solid 6/10. If you like cinematography, it's worth a view.
If you are buying into the Apocalypse Now meets Kong comparisons, you'll be utterly disappointed.

Also, saw Nice Guys in HBO. That was a solid movie.
Didn't think I'd like it, then read it was from writer/director of Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang and Lethal Weapon (sort of). Really funny in an unexpected subversive sort of way. Wasn't what I expected at all.

solid movie, 7.5/10
didn't try to do too much, didn't drag for 3 hours like the Peter Jackson one (though that one was good in it's own way). showed Kong early and often, good cinematography. samuel l jackson's character seemed pretty fake imo... i get what they were going for, but i don't think it worked well.
not an all-timer or movie of the year or anythin like that, but very fun movie, would recommend. compared to the peter jackson one, this one tries way less to be artsy and is perfectly content with being an action "guy flick" which is fine, tbh
also pretty awesome post credit scene and can't wait for the continuation of the kong/godzilla series

6.5/10
Was fine for what it is. A bit overlong but I was entertained for most of the movie. Decent big screen action flick that sticks with the general theme of the franchise. Charlize Theron was a waste in this movie...as was Helen Mirren. Neither seemed to fit, especially Theron who was probably one of the most unconvincing villains ever. Beyond the action, The Rock and Statham carried the movie a bit and are good fit dialogue-wise.

Get Out - I was never really followed the works of Key and Peele, and I was skeptical of Get Out when I saw the trailer. This movie is fucking good, though. It knows how to build tension, unlike most horror movies these days. It has an overall feeling of discomfort, dread and mystery, like The Shining. Would recommend.
The Wolverine (Extended Version) - I have never seen this movie before. I saw Logan before I saw this. The extended version (I can't speak for the theatrical cut) is good. Maybe the 6.7 rating on IMDB would have been higher if this version of the movie was released instead of the other one. This movie is basically Logan-lite. Three "fucks" are dropped and there is some blood in the action scenes. The thing is, anybody who has seen The Wolverine and Logan knows that the latter is far more brutal and uncompromising. The opening scene of Logan alone is gorier than anything in The Wolverine. I would recommend it to Wolverine fans. I just wish that Silver Samurai wasn't a mech, and that Viper had more to do.

Rewatching some of the Friday the 13th movies.
Freddy Vs. Jason-2.5/5- Horrid acting but the last half an hour sort of saves it from being a complete train wreck.
Jason X-2.5/5-The movie almost sort of worked in an odd way but the cyborg chick was completely over the top which is hard to do in a sci-fi horror film set way in the future.
Friday the 3th Part IV- 3/5 Still probably the best of the series which isn't saying much.
Friday the 3th Part III- 3/5- Jason gets his mask and machete but that's about really all that is memorable about it.

The Big Sick - (8.5 out of 10) Definitely has the hue of a Apatow creation. The movie is both an emotional shift from your average rom/com and it has a perky upside to it. It sows the du jour culture in Muslim happenstance as Kumail Nanjiani attempts to navigate life as a struggling comic, Muslim, and attracted to a vastly different culture in his mercurial girlfriend Emily (Zoe Kazan). While I like the perkiness of Zoe in the love interest role, her supporting role doesn't satiate the interaction between Kumail and Emily. I sense that it wouldn't have the same touch if we were, as a viewer, inundated with both of them garnering more screen time. It would've taken away the effect of Beth(Holly Hunter) and Terry (Ray Romano)'s role as an advanced of varying cultures attempt to navigate this thing they call love.
It's a smart movie. It links both tried and true romantic tenets with a more modern paintbrush. I would highlig recommend it if you're moving through a middle part of a relationship. The gamut of emotions will vary from laughter to complete and unbridled numbness. I really, really, liked this movie and the fact that is based on Kumail's and his wife's story makes it all the more believable .

Dunkirk - Saw it in IMAX 70mm and it was brilliant. I thought the lingering suspense that was created by Nolan was great. The sound is really impeccable in this format and just the exhilarating attempt to re-create the raised sense of peril was a great way to portray a WW2 movie--a genre that has been done time and time again. Aesthetically it was well done and it kept me in suspense. I think Nolan hit it out of the park in this movie. If you have the desire to watch this, I would highly suggest you see it in 70mm. It lays out the canvas perfectly. 8.5/10

Same. I'm pretty sure I was pushing an imaginary fire button when the German planes started to fall into the sight. My only real complaint was that for me, it was damn hard to differentiate between a lot of the soldiers in the One Week scenario. Maybe 2 complaints...I saw it in Cinemark HDX (or something like that)....and it was pretty hard to understand the dialogue.

I'm not sure. I don't think it was intentional as it was throughout the whole movie and even in scenes without war activity going on. Any scene with any background noise was difficult for me. But for this movie in particular, it didn't take anything away. I'd guess you could take out all of the dialogue and it would still be an enjoyable and impacting movie.
That being said, my kid and wife didn't seem to have the same issue. So it might be my ears.

Boring, depressing movie that went nowhere. The script called for a lot of hand waving, knee slapping and finger pointing from Denzel but that's it. He seemed like a serious version of Redd Foxx, talking with Mr Death.
Apparently the way to win an Oscar is to have snot linger all over your upper lip during that one intense moment and way until you finish your monologue to wipe off that nasty shit.
I kept waiting for the movie to go somewhere but never did. I wish Mr Death had killed the movie midway to save me time.

Magnolia - 4/10. I think I would've liked it better had I seen it when it came out, but somehow this was the only PTA film I'd yet to see. There's at least one character crying at all times throughout the 3-hr flick, and that scene where the entire casts starts singing like it's a Moby music video was just cheesy.

I do recall that name and vaguely her appearance on the Hillbillies.
I'll keep an eye out for "Hot Cars."

King Kong 1933 (home video)
Dump the whole thing until they reach Skull Island. Seeing the island over the fog, nice~~~ Then to hear the drums and get a look at Noble Johnson**** the Chief, Hollywood at it's finest. Watching the natives as they anticipate the arrival of Kong as Faye Wray is taken out to the sacrifice area, ha~~~ You really got the feel of the excitement, then all of a sudden..........a hush..........then here he come crashing thru the trees (this was a common occurance so shouldn't those trees been knocked down long ago?) and there he stands a 30 foot monstrosity, but....Faye hasn't seen him yet. She looks up slowly.....
Great flick, the battle between Kong and THE T- Rex (Hollywood still hasn't improved on this T-Rex) incredible. Kong did resomble Joe Frazier, dead serious.
Here we have one of the legendary flicks of all time, yep...10.
The video I own doesn't have the spider pit scene, but I've seen it on youtube. If ya recall the sailors come crashing down to the bottom, they hit hard, noway anyone was surviving that, so when they get up and dust themselves off.....nay~~~~~
One of the great scenes in moviedom is in Son of Kong. Skull Island is going down due to the volcano eruption, as it sinks there is little Kong, he holds up Denham so the boat can rescue him, all we see is the hand holding Denham, as he releases him into the boat he gives a wave.....good bye, then...gone.
**** first movie we saw in my Cinema Arts class at COS was King Kong (on the big screen), my teacher Mr. Noble Johnson a white version.

Heard good things from my friends that have seen it too. Looking forward to checking it out.Well, it survived its rewrites better than Justice League. Script was a little too Ayer-ized and the backstory of how that world got to be was underdone. In fact more of the potential cool things in the movie were underdeveloped than developed. Ultimately not a bad movie. Action is good and Will Smith gets to Will Smith a whole lot -- hopefully the sequel fleshes out some of the things it only touched on here. 6.5/10 -- you can probably add a point if your an Ayer fan.

I think that's what they had in mind. More movies to flesh things out a bit more.
The action was pretty good, the chemistry between Smith and the Orc guy was on point and the rest of the cast actually pulled their weight. Well acted.
You can go a bit higher with your rating. It's a definite 7/7.5 movie. I gave it a 9 on the account that Netflix actually didn't make me want to click off 30 minutes into the movie. They deserve their due for once when it comes to making movies.

I applaud it as their first real big budget production, but I think I am prejudiced against Ayer as a director. I think it's a perfect kind of movie for Netflix -- something people probably wouldn't watch in the theater but will give a shot since they already have the subscription.

The Wailing
Never ever have I heard so many South Koreans demonstrate their varied type of screams.
The little daughter is possibly the best child screamer of all time. The lead actor has an unbelievable range of screams.
Also good for watching bodies bend and crack. Some very distinctive cracking.
Almost 2.5 hrs of sounds.
9/10 on sound engineering.

Pretty solid and takes an insane turn. But also nowhere near DDL or PTA’s best work.
Phantom Thread - 9/10. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age, but I thought it was a uniquely beautiful love story. Never really wows you at any particular time, but it was a delightful 2 hour experience.

To the Bone-4/5
Death Note-4/5
Both Netflix originals. Death Note is a much better version of Wish Upon but was based on a comic, IIRC pretty damn good and entertaining.
To the Bone is about an artist who struggles to overcome anorexia, well acted though it feels a little like Short Term 12 which is a much better movie without the eating disorder plot.

Wow, Blade Runner looks a lot cleaner in Germany! Messy and ultimately meh plot. Doesn't go below the surface of any of the themes it could have; really shallow for a movie that long. Good acting for the most part especially by Paul Rudd with Trapper John facial hair. Moon references were cool but just reminded me how much better that movie was for so little money.

Especially being surgeons and allI'd say it's a Duncan Jones homage. Moon was full of updates or twists on elements from 2001, Outland and Silent Running -- and of course there's a ton of Blade Runner in this one. Dude wears his influences on his sleeve and doesn't apologize for it.

Wasn't expecting greatness, had doubts it would live up to the surprisingly good first one. It didn't. Main problem were the characters and actors. No gravitas.

- The villain's motivation was actually quite clever compared to the first one
Cons
- Boring acting
- SIGNIFICANTLY cornier than the first one. Speeches/monologues were vomit inducing ":cry believe in yourself! :cry" stuff. felt like a childrens movie. and that's what drags this down so far. this movie missed Elba badly

I'm not watching a 23 minute video of a couple of dudes bitching about a movie because it seemed too feminist to them. Maybe you can give a few bullet points.
Not sure why the adultery subplot would trigger you so hard, there have been like 10000 movies made where a wife cheats on her husband and this certainly isn't the first time it's been interracial.
Sure no problem. By the way I'm not triggered at the interracial cucking/adulterating. That part of the movie literally came out of nowhere and really had no significance to the movie. I guess you could say that its the reason the husband went on the mission in the first place but it seemed forced and more projecting an agenda to appease every single demographic.
As for the video, watch the first 9 mins. They hit on some great points and were not trashing the movie. The point is that Hollywood and the women empowerment / #metoo sector are always bitching about not having any female dominated casts or female lead roles. The example being the Ghost buster remake being the one outlier. However then it was criticized because it wasn't a serious movie.
But then you have this legitimate writer / director in Alex Garlan (Ex-Machina) take on the movie and they cast an all female cast minus the two men in the movie and the characters are smart, diverse and no catchy, corny bs comedy or lines to dumb it up. In other words its an SJW dream movie. It's serious, has a decent plot with a legitimate director with enough star power in the lead role in Natalie Portman.
So what happens? Absolutely nothing! No mention of it around Hollywood circles. No victory lap, no viewership no cheers and circle jerking over it. No one cares. There wasnt anything for the SJW's to bitch about so it fell silent tucked away and relegated to Netflix.
But one particular group did raise cane about it and it was the actual fans of the book Trilogy that pointed out one unbelievable fuck up. The fact that in the Story's second book, the author reveals the main character (Natalie Portman) is half Asian. When asked about this obvious misstep Garland admitted to only reading the 1st book in the trilogy. LOLOLOLOLOLOL. Either Garland truly didn't do his due diligence and fucked the whole movie up with his miss-cast lead, failing to further add more diversity to the cast, or he just didn't give a fuck and cast Portman anyways. Sounds like a libtard, fake news, SJW fuck up to me.
But I'll admit that I had no idea what the movie was about. Im not that big of a sci-fi fan and was not familiar with the trilogy. I had no idea the cast was all female and went in with zero expectations. I somewhat liked the movie and thought the last 10-15 minutes were the most interesting. The problem I have is that you cant watch a movie nowadays and enjoy a fucking movie without some underlying manipulative bullshit. It's really fucking annoying.

I was highly annoyed to find out Johann Johannsson, who just passed away a few months back, wasn’t the composer for this film, despite it being an obvious attempt to build off the incredible suspense of his Sicario score, which was a re-imagining of the simplicity of th Jaws main theme, but sounds nothing like it. A Quiet Place composer basically used two of Sicario’s songs with very little added or reimagined.
Basically the whole soundtrack feels ripped from:
The Beast

Night Vision

it was quite good... though now i understand people's complaints about audience noise. it was literally one person in the theater who kept reaching for their bag of popcorn throughout. it wasn't the munching sound that bothered, it was the rustling of the bag.
but the movie was very well acted, a great suspense flick (definitely more suspense/thriller and less horror).
i think like any such movie, there are some easy plot holes (why didnt they just do x or y)... but without those there would be no plot. film had a good ending, too.
