The Man of the Year 3/10

Netflix has me watching some hardcore garbage lately.

First thing I do when I pop in a dvd/blu-ray is go to the audio menu and look for a 2.0 mix of the movie. Without a surround sound system, Dolby Digital and DTS sound horrible.

I also watched Rock of Ages and thought it sucked. They play was 100 times better because it was more intimate and they broke down the fourth wall by including the audience. They even called out SA with an ozzy pissing on the alamo joke. It was like a play / rock concert and was just fun. All the vocals were live and they had a live band on stage playing all the music.

The movie was a mess with added characters and there were to many songs added that no one performance stood out. Also none of the singers had a rocker voice, it sounded like chipmunks singing. I give Cruise credit for his role, but his singing was just not there. In the play his character has a minor role but does serious damage in the story. In the movie they even changed that part.

You are absolutely correct and if you listen to the DVD through your TV, then in most cases there's no real solution (except the subtitles, obviously). If you use a surround receiver most have a "night mode" button/setting, that will actually enhance the dialogues and dampen the FX (most noticeably the sub-woofer).

This has annoyed me for years, since there's enough space on the discs to simply add a normal stereo audio mix without the FXs and allow this choice for the viewer. This used to be the norm in early DVDs, but nowadays is quite rare.

It, coupled with the fact that even good TVs are built with shit speakers, is eventually going to force me into buying surround sound, which really annoys me. I'm not a huge fan. I have a huge movie collection and would like to watch them comfortably at home, but I have neither the need or the desire for my "home theater" to replicate or replace a movie theater.

Harder and harder to find. Especially now that rental discs so often disable special features and customization options.

Probably doesn't hurt that the same people selling you the entertainment sell you the kit to experience it through, too.

Gotta make up those margin losses incurred from piracy somehow, I guess.

I wish he would have too. It would have saved two hours of miserable movie watching.

God Bless America : 5/10

Felt like a poor imitation of a George Carlin (RIP) rant turned into a parody revenge flick that tried to combine Mike Judge's anti-USA comedy and Kevin Smith's ranting scenes.

Story is basically: Andy Richter lookalike goes Heisenberg against the Kardashians, Westboro Baptist Church idiots, and the Glen Becks of the world. Unfortunately it turned out to be a piece of crap and you just don't really give a damn about what's going on. The best parts of the movie are the scenes parodying TV shows. You become sick of the main characters as much as the douchebags they go after and kill.

Yeah, I had the film for a year but forced myself to watch it today.

I liked Michael Douglas' performance, that's probably why I rated it as such. There's too many separate storylines going on that never weave well into each other. And Shia LaBeouf kinda sucks. But it kept my attention, and I'd like to watch the original Wall Street.

Lite fare, pleasant, sl. corny. 3/5

The script was stereotypical and b rated, however the SEALs and the way they move, their tactics and precision, that alone is worth the price of admission. There are some really cool things going on in that movie that you have to pay attention to else you might miss it, because those boys aren't actors. They are portraying themselves.

Had this been done with all actors, it would have been the Rock, Vin Diesel kind of guys and a shit ton of pithy "we think they say this" lines. Instead what you see are what looks like normal every day people, quiet professionals who hang out with each other, value their family and do their jobs. They don't drop a lot of stupid lines, they just get in and get out. No Glimmerman shit here, just solid work. That's what you should expect from the "been there, done that" crowd though.

There is more to a movie than just pure crazy violence and CGI.

moonrise kingdom was a fun movie for me, wes anderson fanboys will jizz in their pants over it, wes anderson haters will hate it more than anything he's ever done. it's no rushmore but it's probably better than what the mookie crew thought of life aquatic.

safety not guaranteed was okay, you'll have a boner for aubrey plaza after watching it, but the ending was supposed to be some grandiose event and the mumblecore director clearly didn't have the chops to make it as awesome as it could have been.

That's the impression I get from the ads. It seems like every movie he makes gets more "Wes Anderson-y" than the one before, if that makes sense.

It's not really my thing, but the eye candy value was, of course, off the charts, and the actual club/dancing/male strippers interacting backstage with each other scenes were absolutely hilarious! I watched 2016: Obama's America last night.

Very well done documentary, not at all a conservative version of Micheal Moore's work like people try to say. Brings out some interesting facts about Obama and the people around him, and an interview with his conservative half-brother George.

The documentary sticks mostly with facts, but does offer opinion, and it is clear to see the difference. Even liberals may like the documentary as it is based from Obama's books and real trips to where Obama has been.

Moonrise Kingdom. I'll say... 7/10?

Wes Anderson's films just keep getting more and more Wes Anderson-y, and if that trend continues he's eventually going to lose me. This one isn't there yet, but I can feel it on that precipice. Which is why it's hard to grade. The parts that worked I thought worked incredibly well. I laughed a ton, which is always a good sign in a comedy. But, like I said, the shtick is on the verge of becoming too intentional for my taste. In this one specifically, the stylized acting was a bit much in parts (and had to have been at the urging of Anderson, since the cast is full of people I love). And I, personally, think the film would have been plenty hipster even if it wasn't lit/treated to look like it'd been filmed through Instagram.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, I think it deserves the 7, but I'd really like to see Anderson dial it down at some point. Rushmore remains my favorite of his films (by a lot) because it had all the quirk and style inherent to his voice, but at its heart was a genuinely sweet romance. All of his films has come down to a sweet romance, but as he becomes increasingly focused on the staging/presentation of a series of stylized tableaux, I find it gets harder and harder to engage with the central love story.

Is there such thing as a perfect 10/10 film?

Sure. But personal taste means what qualifies is varied enough to be meaningless.

Sure but it's completely subjective, that's why I like when there's a line or two explaining the grade - it's easier to form an opinion.

Jack Black did a fantastic job. Other than wearing a bizarre hair piece, MattMc didn't do much of anything. A weak character that hurt an overall enjoyable film.

Pretty good, i was pleasantly surprised at the writing. Pretty creative.
Too many chase scenes and Hollywoods tired old lame "good guy has gun, now bad guy has gun, now good guy has gun, now bad guy has gun" ad nauseum to create **tension** that did nothing but take away from plot but all in all the plot was solid.

The FX were good in that they fit the theme, not just mindless FX with crap blowing up for nothing.

Concur. When the part calls for a genuine Southerner why doesn't Hollywood just find one instead of ad libbing with a CakeBoi type? He was so unbelieveable.

Travolta, etc. Freaking HWood and it's homo preference.

Fair enough... if you like severe plot holes, shitty acting and a woeful ending then that is okay. Also why is it called The Dark Knight Rises, there was nothing dark like The Dark Knight, if anything it was trying to hard to appeal to a bigger audience and went soft

There's nothing dark in it? A terrorist using a bomb to bring a city into anarchy for five months isn't dark? And Batman is also called The Dark Knight, so even if the movie wasn't dark, the title would still make sense.

And what was wrong with the acting? I can think of one or two instances of bad acting, but overall, I thought the acting was solid.

Wow... how exciting. How do you address the significant plot holes littered through the film? And the unbelievably stupid scenes such as punching verterbrae back in and wasting so much fucking time climbing out of a hole for example.

The acting was okay but just shitty but some - Anne Hathaway for example is shit in every film she is in

DId I just read that ?

The Dark Knight is Batman's nickname you moron; get a clue

And I'm sorry if you expected a remake of TDK and another Ledger, then you are pretty stupid, because GOyer and Nolan did a great job with the Bat-universe

Out of nowhere I wanted to rewatch it and it was awesome. The Edinburgh accent is sometimes hard to understand, but Trainspotting is a killer movie.

If they go w/ Levitt's Robin Blake as Batman in the next series I like that he's a detective. One of the original qualities of Bruce Wayne that wasn't really focused on much in the Nolan films was how smart Bruce was - did actual detective work on cases; not just beating people up. In fact, the full nickname for Batman is The Dark Knight Detective & his first appearance was in Detective Comics.

Yeah this is one of the few things Nolan and his people missed.

I'm guessing time constraints kept them from expanding on Bruce's detective savvy.

There was a little bit in TDK with the bullet reconstruction, but that was almost more about the technology than the "detecting".

Yes we've established I know very little about Batman but yes I was expecting it to be as good as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight but it was almost a completely different thing. We just keep thinking Oh its by Nolan, its fucking awesome looking at it with one eye. I love Nolan but the amount of stupidity and plot holes in it was too much to handle

You've said that repeatedly without ever, to my recollection, expanding on what those plot holes were.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, of course. And if you didn't like it, you didn't like it. But from what you've posted here, it seems more like you've taken a negative opinion for the sake of being contrarian. Which is no different/better than the people who blindly praise the movie for its Nolan connections.

Not this again!!!

How bout keeping the cops alive underground just so he can blow them up later? Whats the point of that?

Or the cops and bad guys not using their guns in the big climactic fight scene? Did they forget they had them?

Or Bruce Wayne faking his death for no apparent reason? Faking batman's death makes sense, but no need to kill off bruce wayne. Nolan just loves his big "reveals" at the end so he hastily constructs a "misdirection" when it makes no sense as far as the story is concerned.

Or Bane hating batman for betraying the league of shadows, the same organization that kicked Bane out for saving the leader's daughter? They should have been best buddies since they were both screwed over.

Or Batman's bad knee suddenly recovering on its own in a prison? No electronic assist needed to make the "super jump"!

Or "Mal's" desire to fulfill her fathers dream, yet her fathers dream was to destroy a city full of evil, which was no longer the case since Gordon had gotten rid of crime in the city? Plus why would she want to help out Daddy when he banishes the dude that saved her life?

Or the absurd "maybe we can prove fraud" line? By far, the most quotable line from the entire film. As if the dozen dead people and video of terrorists shooting up the stock exchange isnt enough to prove fraud?

Or the "bomb" having a timer on it despite not being designed to be used as a bomb?

Or Bane not detonating the bomb when he found out that military sent in special forces (that he killed) and he vowed he would detonate the bomb if they did?

Or "Mal" not turning in "robin" and his underground buddies to Bane?

Yeah...plot holes. Lots and lots of them.

I really don't want to watch the film again but so often in that film I would think fuck that was stupid or umm what...?

You're making a very interesting assumption saying I purely didn't like it to be different... How would you explain me liking Batman Begins or TDK if I wanted to be different. I didn't like the film just because I didn't. There is many reasons and it sure wasn't to be different. What kind of person doesn't like a film purely to be different anyway?

Yeah I see where you're coming from, overhyped movies are annoying.

Personally, I liked it but I can understand why some people didn't

One overhyped movie I really didn't like was 500 days of Summer, people told me it was the best comedy they'd ever seen... hmm

What kind of person doesn't like a film purely to be different anyway?

I do that all the time.

Most often when an actor I dont like is in that particular movie.

Take Chris Evans for example, he comes off as a major douche to me so I often avoid the movie he's in.

I would often badmouth a movie just because he's in whether the movie is good or bad.
