Odd, I just checked and Showtime ain't free at all. It's blocked.
Or do you mean streaming only? But just now I just browsed through one of the HBO channels and they were actually open. Holy shit.
I do not have that package so I assume they've unlocked it. I'm going to douche check and get in contact with them in case they're being cute and charging me for this shit. They'd done it in the past where they would have a " free promotion" but after it expires they leave it in place and start charging you.

七人の侍 (Seven Samurai)
I'd rate it 9/10. Good story and some awesome battle scenes. Story of a farming village that finds some rag tag samurai to defend them from a bandit attack.
Great film :toast Remade by Hollywood in 1960 as “The Magnificent Seven”, one of the first “all star cast” projects. I love it for Eli Wallach, he’s the best Mexican/Italian/Greek bad guy. Always a very calculating and manipulative character.

If it suits your tastes, PBS is taking several episodes of Great Performances and Live at Lincoln Center from behind the paywall for awhile. Also the Metropolitan Opera is streaming one show from it's archive each day for 23 hours as long as the stage is closed. Il Barbiere di Siviglia still available til 6:30. I don’t use the app. I am forever shackled to cable/sat because I have to have TCM in real time lol. Sunday morning is like church for me, scanning the schedule for the week and setting the dvr :)
I’m glad about PBS, I’ve not watched much other than Saturday cooking shows since my Passport ran out. It really burns me that Direct TV doesn’t carry the Create channels.
Yea my opera experiences are a bit limited. I mean I did play clarinet in the orchestra for my college’s production of M. Butterfly :) Do you ever go to the Met Opera Fathom Events? I’ve been to a couple of the ballet productions, and I never miss a Flashback Cinema!

Pretty much what you can expect when a director writes and a stuntman directs. Expertly done but derivative action sequences (Batman vs. Superman, Daredevil, True Detective, probably some other stuff I haven't seen) connected by a gossamer thin and ultimately predictable plot. If you like some cool action, it's worth the watch but don't expect to care much about anything. Hemsworth is good; Harbour barely there.

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) 7/10 good popcorn
Ya, I saw it for the 1st time. Didn't cheat, didn't know how it was going to end.
Many of the plot twists are pure soap opera. But it definitely keeps you watching. Her taking him back (twice) after he ratted her out to the arrogant DA AND after he went on a week in Mexico with a floosey while she was at her Moms funeral was just too much of a stretch.
Casting was mostly very good.
Lana Turner as Cora Smith was fantastic. Dale if you don't find her pleasing in that movie and at least as hot as Nancy Pelosi (to you) you have a problem.
John Garfield as Frank Chambers meh.
Lawyer for Cora was great.
Arrogant DA was a good cast if arrogant was what they were going for.
Would you recommend bothering to watch the 1981 version with Jack Nicholson / Jessica Lange if you already saw both?

I DVR'ed and watched it last night and this morning as well though I've seen it many times. It's got it all, even the cuckold strain as Her husband wants to watch.
And they catch her in one sumptuous angle after another. They don't grudge it. "You want to see her bottom jut out a bit?"
"Fine, here and here and here."
& her stomach ain't all the way flat, which is absolutely perfect.
The way Garfield talks about that California death house is fascinating. Just like MacMurray talked about same in "Double Indemnity." They're both on their way & will not stop, even though they see it clear.
& the hard line that "Cora" sides about turning the place into a growing concern. It's marvelous. She could do it without looking back at the slaughter of her husband, but, Frank won't be able to. He thinks he can, but, it ain't in him. He'd a run amok.
& the horror Turner exhibits when her husband commands her to Northern Canada (not just Canada, but Northern Canada) to nurse his paralyzed sister. Sure, the viewer thinks about it at first blanch (cleaning her after BM's, cleaning her on a daily basis, etc.) but, then Turner thinks about it, the director shows us her thinking about it and I don't want to think about it no more.
Yes, MT, it is a flawless motion picture event.
& the remake is serviceable.

The Moonlighter 1953 4/10
*only saw last hour but it's enough to easily pick up on the plot.
[FONT=Verdana]Fred MacMurray
Barbara Stanwyck
Fred MacMurray as a fatherly bachelor with Gramps living at home was fine. Fred as a bad dude tough guy did not work.
:lol So I can assume you haven’t seen Double Indemnity? Or The Caine Mutiny? Or The Apartment? Fred MacMurray was definitely greatest when he was cast against type. But I just don’t care much for The Moonlighter. Its just probably my 3rd choice out of the 4 MacMurray/Stanwyck pairings.
That ending tho. Whoever the stuntman and woman playing the slide down the waterfall deserve extra pay and a 10 rating.
That was no stuntwoman. That was Miss Barbara Stanwyck herself. She did most of her own stunts, the waterfall is the most infamous :toast

Double Indemnity was great. But Fred was the swarmy insurance salesman. Much different from tough guy cowboy in The Moonlighters. I have not yet seen Caine or The Apartment. Will do. We agree The Moonlighter just fell short. Maybe the studio was still working the kinks out after WWII and were pressured to get Moonlight out quickly.
The stuntman in the waterfall scene. Wow that dude took a fall. Barbara slid down in rather safe increments (still impressive). But dude was like a toboggan going down a snow run / waterslide park.

Well I remembered I had The Moonlighter on my dvr so I watched it yesterday. And I liked it a lot more than I thought I did lol. I moved it to 2nd place of my best Stanwyck/MacMurray flix. Of course for me it’s all about Stanwyck, but I get what you mean about MacMurray. He does a really good heartless SOB but he looks awkward in the action parts. I guess because he was a big man and he moved like one—slow and lumbering. You know he was the physical model for the comic book Captain Marvel in the 40’s? :lol

Saw a couple of off the kilter films this week:
"Mother!" with Bardem & Jennifer Lawrence. A real mind bender, that is a showcase for Lawrence, Bardem plays her husband. Ed Harris is there as well and is stellar. It's weird, but, serviceable.
---
& "By the Sea" with husband & wife at the time Pitt & Jolie. Christ, she is so gorgeous in this that it's difficult to watch. They play a couple on the brink of separating who come into contact with a young French couple on their honeymoon. Voyeurism abounds. Nothing fantastic mind you, but, again serviceable.

Checked out, "I See You" on Prime. Had better than average ratings so I gave it a shot. And this is with me pretty much hating Helen Hunt. Fortunately, about 75% of the movie doesn't involve her.
Psychological thriller that keeps you guess for a while and does have a pretty good twist or two at the end. I think it was actually a good story and could have been done better.
That being said, it was worth watching. It's only just over an hour and a half so it's a quick watch.

Extraction - 6.. idk, perhaps even a 5. I'd have to see it again. I'll give my final score in 10-15 years when I get myself to see this for the secon time.
This is like John Wick in India... I'd say the main guy played by Chris Hemsworth looks even better than John Wick sometimes. I'd give this like a 7 if it was presented like an Resident Evil movie and Hemsworth was playing Chris Redfield, cause damn, that guy can kill. If there were 5 of them they could pretty much take down the whole Indian Police/Army. Enemies or should I say Police and Army in this movie are pretty much retarded and you really can't believe that those guys are qualified for their job. I see this a lot in movies, like, you have a fucking gun and instead of shooting the guy, you rather rush into him. I'd be fine if it happened once, but not like 10 times. Also, fucking grenades dont burst into flame when they explode. Get that right already movies.
I did like the action scenes tho. The shaky cam didn't really bother me and I can see that the director was a stunt guy before, just like the John Wick directors. Acting was pretty good from everyone and the story was just ok i guess. So all in all it was an OK movie.
oh yea, there is a scene where Hemsworth slaps the shit out of some kids, which was pretty funny. I was surprised they showed that in this vagina times.

It's a few years old (2014 I believe), but I had never heard about it before now. It's free to watch with adds on the Tubi app. My one complaint is that it telegraphs all of its twists, but the story overall is pretty mind-bending. It's based off a short story from the 50s. I looked it up and read it after seeing the movie. Surprisingly very little was changed, even the dates/time periods were kept the same. They just expanded on one of the major plotlines.

Echo in the Canyon
Documentary about the folk music scene in Laurel Canyon in the late 60's. It was put together largely by Jakob Dylan who did all of the interviews and there was some interesting stuff. But in the end it was pretty indulgent as to Dylan. Interspersed between some very informative clips, they'd cut to scenes of concert footage of Dylan and other modern musicians (most notably Beck) performing the songs.
In the end, I felt like it was pretty forced as to the importance of some of those groups. They somehow involved the Beach Boys and the Beatles and tried to make it seem like it was all intertwined. Which I'm not buying.
Anyway, it was just OK. Unless you really want to hear the Mamas and Papas redone by Dylan, Beck, and some other random people.

I'm about an hour-and-half in, and this is indeed one of the most overrated films of the past twenty years. Sure, I haven't finished it yet, but there's not much it can do to redeem itself with regards to any twists or potential memorable scenes. I don't think a heretofore mediocre story should be let off the hook just because it has a few great scenes during the third act. First and third acts are relatively easy to craft. It's creating a compelling second act that is the real challenge in storytelling. Too much of the second act pivots to Howard's (Sandler) domestic situation that isn't particularly interesting and centered too much around the "immature and philandering husband tries to redeem himself" trope told in about the most cliched way possible. Blowout with mistress. Has heartfelt moment with wife and kids. Yawn.
And the central premise is rather weak. While I do like the quasi supernatural aura the Safdies build around the opal stone, they don't feature enough scenes with the stone to play up its spell. Even something as simple as KG alone in his locker room looking at the stone as if it were the Holy Grail while Lopatin's synthy soundtrack plays in the background would've went a long way. And speaking of KG. I found his use more of a gimmick than anything else, which relates to the main storyline's shortcomings. You have to ask yourself. If this story featured a fictional basketball player, would it hold the same interest?
Another nearly fatal flaw that just about sucked all the tension away from the proceedings was the fact that Sandler was a relatively well-off jeweler. His stereo alone was worth about 100K. Because of that, I never really bought into the tension of his needing the money to pay off his debts and/or continue his self-destructive odyssey. I realize the story is about one man's descent into self-ruin, and no matter how many assets he has or doesn't have, he'll always figure out way to walk the razor's edge despite that, but when you're living in a million dollar New York apartment and have millions in inventory at your shop, his dire situation never felt that dire.
Compare that to James Caan's circumstances in The Gambler. With every bet, he put it all on the line and you knew it needed to payoff or he might not live to see another Blackjack table. As a result of that, the scene where Caan is sitting in the bathtub in his dingy apartment listening to the Lakers blow the game at the freethrow line has more tension than the entirety of Uncut Gems.
Also, maybe I'm a bit old school, but too many scenes break one of the older cardinal rules of filmmaking. Get your characters face-to-face. Sandler spends way too much fuckin' time on the phone and too many important plot points and discussions happen over the phone. Yes, I know phones dominate our world, but this is a movie. Watching actors on the phone or texting on the phone isn't compelling cinema.
I know what the Safdies were going for. A slow-burn, character driven gritty crime thriller in the vein of classic late-60s/70s neo-noir. But they miss the mark here. This is nowhere near the level of films like Point Blank, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Charley Varrick, Straight Time, The Long Goodbye, Hardcore, and The Gambler. No clue why this was a critical darling. It's a capable thriller, but that's about it.

My wife has one. I watched tubi like crazy from 2018-2019 at her place, about 1.5 movies a night. First movie I watched on tubi was called "rubber" about a fucking tire that could magically gore up and kill people. Then there was the short lived netflix era in mid 2019. I got tired of B/C movies after awhile.

Surprisingly solid because by all rights it should have been a complete disaster. Has almost nothing to do with the source material but Norton pulls off an OK auteur project that's very well designed, shot, cast and acted but too long and with some too-cute uses of disguised-only-in-name historical characters (Miles Davis? Really?) to be rated any higher. Fortunately Norton doesn't go for the easy situations his disabled character would experience in a dumber film.

Persona: The Dark Truth Behind Personality Tests
3/10
The concerns about Myers-Briggs and Big Five personality tests are valid, especially when they're abused as hiring tools or relied upon too heavily for promotions. And there's some pretty creepy shit happening with facial analysis and interviews. Overall, a lot of worthwhile subjects are raised. But this HBO documentary gets bogged down in the history of the Myers Briggs authors from over 100 years ago and turns the emotional manipulation to 11 in the last 30 minutes.

Batman Vs. Superman Ultimate Edition (Rewatch)-2.5/5- Curious to see if it was better after Justice League, it's not. Kind of a disaster. Needlessly dark and convoluted, cringey dialogue, over-the-top god references and Jessie Einseburg practically sinks the movie, himself, with how bad he is.
