Mary and Max - 2009
Animation (clay)

A tale of friendship between two unlikely pen pals: Mary, a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max, a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York

Philip Seymour Hoffman as the voice of Max

An antidote to mawkish Pixar sentimentality, this film touches on such topics as Aspergers, isolation, suicide and despair, but it does so in a funny & captivating way. Probably a must see for animation fans.

After about 10 minutes of torture- I told wifey- sorry you watch it on your own. Very, very few movies have forced me to not even finish watching. I won't waste 2 hours of my life on something so bad.

This kind of shit cracks me up. The Avengers obviously isn't an award winning movie and is made for the sole purpose of action and entertainment. It's based on a fucking comic book. What did you want to see out of it?

Ok, let me get serious with you, that way you'll answer the question. I won't point out that you are a 13 dollar an hour security guard. That you were banned from this site (temporarily), for being a socially awkward retard, or that if given the opportunity, you would almost certainly blow Avante. None of that.

Now, what is it that you thought you would, or should have gotten out of watching The Avengers? I will once again remind you that you are in the minority about thinking this movie is not entertaining and the proof is in the box office results. But again, what did you want?

I liked it, thought it was pretty good for an action-drama of foreign origin.

I will say, I laughed out loud at the epilogue text about how Ip Man "united the country with his fists" and that on such-and-such date "...the Japanese Emperor unconditionally surrendered", implying said surrender was because of and directly to the Chinese.

I laughed. Propaganda knows no race or color it seems.

Cloud Atlas - 8/10. Ambitious; I wish more films took chances like this one. Was able to follow all the multiple threads, but found I really didn't get the chance to really identify with any of the characters since there was so much less time spent with a lot of them given the number of stories they were telling. Not as enamored with it as most seem to be. There is some hauntingly beautiful scenery, and it may be the most personal story yet. But one of the things that worked so well for Craig was that he was NOT the typical Bond; and the two movies he did weren't typical Bond movies. This one felt... more typical. I suppose people will feel like this is a great transition as Bond matures in his role as a 00 agent. I have my reservations but will reserve judgement until the next film.

The film begins with Emy Reyes cleaning a young man's living room after doing the laundry, so she is only in a bra and panties and some white stockings. He gets pissed because she sticks her ass in front of the TV, so he gives her the two finger push but accidentallly slides in. She winks at the camera with her beautiful brown eye before things start really getting heated. Overall, I give it 8.0 out of 10.

I think I mentioned in here back when I first saw it that I really liked Moonrise Kingdom, but that while watching it I was consciously aware of the fact it was exactly as Wes Anderson-y as I can ever handle. He reached the limit. I've liked everything he's done so far, including even The Darjeeling Limited (though to a lesser extent), but they've become increasingly self-conscious and affected. If the next one is even a .5% more hipstery than this one is, I won't be able to handle it. As it was, I was already bothered by the fact it looked as if it had been filmed through Instagram filters. Rushmore remains his high point, in my mind, and I'd love to see him get back to something that feels at least as tethered to reality as that one was.

Well, there must be a reason why this director is thought of as talented-maybe it is because of something like Rushmore. He has gone waay downhill since.

I hated everything about this movie and it was the 2nd time in the last 10 years (both this year) that I just stopped watching a movie altogether.

Life Aquatic and Royal Tenenbaums were both better than Rushmore... but yeah, Darjeeling Limited wasn't anything special. Haven't seen Moonrise but it looks like it's quirky for sole reason of seeming original. I think anyone watching can at least appreciate his original story telling and cinematography even if they don't like his style, though it is teetering on becoming redundant in the same way that Tim Burton's has.

The Life Aquatic is one of those rare movies where I enjoy it more and more every time I watch it, but I become less and less convinced it's actually a good film. I love the performances, and think some of the quirk is at times laugh-out-loud funny (the music when they're searching the pirate island, for instance, never fails to inspire a chuckle), but it is pretty insufferable in its affectation. Of his oeuvre, that's the one that stands out most to me as being a movie I probably would hate if not for the fact Anderson had already won me over with Rushmore and Tenenbaums. I suspect I'll feel the same way about Moonrise Kingdom when I eventually see it again.

The Baader Meinhof Complex - 2008
A look at Germany's terrorist group, The Red Army Faction (RAF), which organized bombings, robberies, kidnappings and assassinations in the late 1960s and '70s.

Interesting subject matter, but the film doesn't really go beyond surface. Lots of moving parts I guess, the story would probably better fit the mini-series format. We think we live in age of terrorism, but maybe the 70's was worse.
8/10I agree. It was well made, but there just didn't seem to be enough background to explain why that brand of radicalism flared up in the at that time and place. I would take for granted such a background in a movie about the black panthers or the like -- but it was a German movie so the viewers there could already have that basic knowledge that we don't.

Holy f***. Shame on yall if yall don't plan on seeing this on the big screen lol

My God, what a gorgeous motion picture. Automatically my #1 film of the year. From script, to direction, to the acting... you frickin name it. Political references of today, the economy, the realism you feel watching this film is amazing. The cinematography is great and a different perspective on the "gangster" flick that works wonderfully. Hardly a cliche found in this film, (maybe one but it was ok). Director Andrew Dominik is a true master of his craft. Thank God for Brad Pitt's performance man. That dude is in my favorite picture of the year 2 years in a row now.

I kind of felt taken back to a great dialogue driven film with some great intense moments like Pulp Fiction, but it wasn't Pulp Fiction. It was Andrew Dominik's and Brad Pitt's masterpiece, and I recommend for anyone who is a true movie lover. For the anti Twilight bs movie crowd, this is a treat. Pitt is a badass, Tony Soprano is really good alongside Pitt, Ray Liotta awesome, and so is everyone else.

When it came out - it got a lot of hype -because of some of the inventiveness of the script. Other movies came out around the same time which expanded on this quirky inventiveness like - Being John Malkovich, Adaptation,etc... (don't remember which came first though--maybe Adaptation and Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman started it)

I liked it at that time while going through a break-up but it was pretty dark and agonizing to watch at times.

I'm not a big movie fanatic, so I usually don't watch shit till it comes out on Netflix, or Bluray. My daughter bought me The Expendables II for Xmas. I hadn't seem #1 yet, but it was on Netflix. A pretty sorry ass movie in my view. They did decent on the graphics, but the plot was weak. The best part was Schwarzenegger doing a bit part, and being the smart guy not to take the assignment. I guess if someone is only interested in lost of fiery stuff, lots of gunfire, destruction, etc...

3/10.

Those movies aren't meant to be great or collection worthy. Its just a flick you just see because its on or to kill time.

In the first movie, Arnold only made a cameo because he was involved in politics and couldn't commit to the full shooting of the movie.

He's in the second one as is Bruce Willis as participants.

Both very long.

Lincoln 7/10

An ok movie but very long and boring factor is high.

I know it's all a matter of personal taste, but Lincoln a 7 or 7.5 out of 10? I just don't get that at all. At least an 8.5, if not a 9.

Killer Joe - 6/10

Matthew Mcconaughey was great in the movie but the story was very over the top and just wow in your face with the graphic nudity and weird ass shit like the implied incest between Chris and Dottie. The ending was somewhat of a letdown and extremely sloppy. And I was a little annoyed by the fact that I was suppose to believe that New Orleans was Dallas when in fact they're very differently geographically. And some very good advice, do not watch this movie with mixed company especially your mom, grandma, sister, or any other female or human that is easily offended.

I thought Lincoln was going to be more about his body of work and life story compared to just the slavery issue. The movie should have been titled "13th Amendment" because that's all it was about. Acting was great to no surprise but I overall I was pretty disappointed in it.

The Hobbit part 1:
6.5/10

New Zealand is still beautiful, the effects are stunning, and Serkis can still mo-cap act. But the movie was far too long for the suprisingly shallow character development and the amount of plot revealed. Also, the tone was inconsistent. If Bilbo is the main character (as the title suggests) they should have spent more time developing the character beyond a collection of Martin Freeman's best puzzled / confused / flustered reaction shots. Making the decision to go from two to three films should have been done months earlier to give the writing team time to refine the pacing and story issues.

Still better than most fantasy films out there but Jackson should be held to a higher standard.

The Hobbit - 6/10
Special effects were inconsistent but it doesn't seem right to knock the movie for that when it was made for 3D, and the fps shit... just watch the standard version and avoid the gimmicks. A large portion of the action carried no weight and changes in settings during the journey weren't very cohesive. It felt like an action movie (e.g. Avengers) instead of an epic (e.g. LOTR trilogy) many times. The mountain scene was oddly placed and lacked any sense of consequence. The transition from the Goblin King/Gollum to the Pale Orc blended into one long action packed ending. Character development wasn't focused enough for me to care about Thorin in the end. McKellen and Freeman were fantastic. The world was beautiful and I enjoyed the addition of the Appendices/Silmarillion lore. Acting was great. Gollum was a highlight.

Les Miserables - 6.5/10
Very ambitious to have the actors sing live instead of lip-sync. It provided great spontaneity and emotion. That being said, Valjean's origin loses it's poetic meaning and the revolutionaries in Act II look like fools more than heroes. I think things come off like that because there's a loss of atmosphere that you find on stage and gets lost in translation here in the movie. Borat's and Helena Bonham's characters shouldn't have been in the movie.

Django Unchained - 8/10
Most entertaining movie of the year, imo. Christoph followed up Inglorious with another awesome performance. Foxx and DiCaprio were memorable too. Lots of memorable scenes and funny nods to the old spaghetti westerns if you keep an eye out for that.
