They've been showing "Sophies Choice" on the cable of late. A truly outstanding motion picture. It is something else again. Kevin Kline lights this movie as he portrays a man who is at turns brilliant and then in turn completely insane. If you've never seen it, you'll know where it's going and how it will end, but, I watch it again & again nonetheless.
Meryl Streep plays "Sophie" and she's fine, but, it's Kline here who soars.

Yes, the franchise will grow weathered and of questionable feat as it rolls thru act 5 and beyond, but, this, this charter entry is for the ages.

^No. I have not. I'll check YouTube for it.
*Thayer David as "Jergens" in the immediate aftermath of the fight is so fine. He painstakingly performs the ritual as he talks about "guts and stamina"...then is informed (off camera) and relates:::"Ladies and gentlemen,,,we have a split decision."
*Tony Burton--Creed's manager in Creed's business office watching on television a report of Rocky in a Philadephia meat house. He gets it right there. It dawns on him, but, he can't reach Creed who sees nothing but dollar signs.

^Well, of course YouTube has only bits & pieces of it. I'll keep an eye out for it.
------
Here's another good movie and it's pretty current ('07):::
"The Education of Charlie Banks"....it's a period piece taking place in the '70s and it features John Ritter's son (Jason) as "Mick" and Jesse Eisenberg in the title role. Mick is a young man with a lethal temper. He nearly kills two high school students in a fight early on in the movie. "Charlie" witnesses this event, rats out Mick (unbeknownest to Mick) to the police, then fails to provide an affadavit, the case is dropped and Mick goes free. A couple years later Mick shows up in upstate New York at the college that Charlie and their mutual friend are attending. It's this portion of the motion picture that is very special. Mick is a complex character and is painted by the producer and director as such. It's a motion picture that is fraught in tragedy and total loss. The ending scene is shattering.
Highly recommended.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil - 7/10.
One of those neat little independent horror comedies (like Bubba Ho-Tep) that will never get the recognition it deserves. The premise is good, the script is solid and the visuals were great for a non "mainstream" movie. Alan Tudyk was his usual comedic genius self and Tyler Labine was surprisingly good.

1988's "Sunset" with James Garner as Wyatt Earp and Bruce Willis as Hollywood movie star Tom Mix. Takes place in Los Angeles in 1929 and involves a murder case that Garner's "Earp" helps solve.
Nothing earth shattering here, but, early on in the motion picture there is a sequence that is quite disarming. "Earp" has come to Hollywood to have his story told on celluloid. He'll act as onset consultant. The scene being shot this day is the OK Corral shootout. The director is a pompous sort and he's already on "Earp's" nerves, but, "Earp" makes allowances. As the scene unfolds we're switched back & forth in quick camera angles/shots as to the action on the set and b&w flashbacks as Garner's "Earp" immediately relives the horrors of that day and shootout. "Earp" says not a word, but, grimaces as the action takes place in broad Hollywood terms. After the scene is over and the director has yelled "cut" he rushes to Earp's side and excitedly queries:::"Is that how it really was, Mr. Earp?" "Earp" recovers from his thoughts, puts his game face back on and answers:::"Yeah, that's exactly how it was."

"Ace in the Hole" yesterday on TCM. 1951 with Kirk Douglas. Concerns the dilemma of a local New Mexico man who becomes trapped in a cave. Douglas plays a newsman who purposely keeps the man trapped in order to squeeze every bit of use from the tragedy. Over 60 years old, but, it's as timeless as if it were yesterday.
And Douglas here is just flat out incredible. His character: an angry man rampaging thru the final days of his life.

I started watching movies and used the subtitles and you'd be surprised just how much dialogue you miss without them. I actually got used to it and it feels odd when I don't use the subtitles.
Some people don't like the subtitles because they are distracting but if you get used to it it becomes second nature.

I don't have a problem with accents, in general, but have been watching most DVDs/BluRays with subtitles for a while now. They're mixed horribly. Especially if you don't have surround sound. Turn the volume up loud enough to hear the dialog clearly, and background noises are ear splitting. Keep the volume low enough to avoid deafness and angry neighbors, and everyone talks in a whisper. My guess is that may be the root of your problem, rather than the accents, because it was plenty clear in the theaters. Only the guy who plays Lestrade has a particularly thick London accent.
And the ending sucked ass.

The confrontation/fight between Moriarty and Holmes at Reichenbach Falls and the faked death are taken from "The Final Problem," one of Doyle's original stories. It was the one moment where I thought Richie's slow/fast motion fight gimmick felt a bit out of place, though. I can buy Robert Downey, Jr. as a Holmes who knows his way around a row, but Jared Harris is a tougher sell.

Sounds about right.
Turning on subtitles as a solution sounds like a sucky viewing experience, but I'll try it.

Harris was Moriarty? I thought they could have casted that part with a better actor for sure.
I still thought the ending sucked. Would have liked to have seen more detail about how he made it after that jump over the falls, even if it was shown after the fact.

You are absolutely correct and if you listen to the DVD through your TV, then in most cases there's no real solution (except the subtitles, obviously). If you use a surround receiver most have a "night mode" button/setting, that will actually enhance the dialogues and dampen the FX (most noticeably the sub-woofer).
This has annoyed me for years, since there's enough space on the discs to simply add a normal stereo audio mix without the FXs and allow this choice for the viewer. This used to be the norm in early DVDs, but nowadays is quite rare.
