I don't recall the name of it, I was drunk the other night but it was one where some white guy accidentally killed some Mexican old church man's son and was escaping some cartel thugs out to get him back for it but at the end the white guy went to Guanajuato and made amends in a church funeral with the old Mexican whose son died. The cartel thug came to try and kill the white guy but the old Mexican guy killed the thug first.... him and the gringo hugged it out, that was basically the end

Didn't like the characters and story wasn't anywhere near as good as any episode of the Sopranos. A wholly forgettable prequel. Lots of fan service but the story kind of seemed all over the place with lots of focus on the riots. I did like Liotta though.

Would have been 5 but the "woke up this morning" theme gained them a point. Ray Liotta was indeed great but what did you expect from a gangster movie A lister (imo)? I expected more about the group we knew, less about the side stories.

I saw The Eyes of Tammy Faye last week. I totally enjoyed it, basically it’s a one woman Jessica Chastain show and she delivers! Tammy Faye was another one of those figures that I was aware of at the time but I was too young to be interested in who she actually was, aside from the ridiculous makeup. It doesn’t dwell too deeply into the specifics of their scandal (as Tammy Faye wasn’t really involved) and it only mentions Jessica Hahn once. And I’m a big fan of overacting so Vincent D’Onofrio as Jerry Falwell was cartoony and creepy all in one :) 8.5/10

Many Saints of Newark - 7/10. (You can catch it on HBO Max). I had some free gift cards to Harkin, so it was worth the recliner seat.
A film that was victim to the delay from the end of The Sopranos' run and the death of its protagonist, it was worth a gander. Ray Liotta was solid as Hollywood Dick. It tried to show the backstory to the Moltisanti, but couldn't have been more telegraphed than a Jared Goff pass. It was a nice touch that they had James Galdofini's son play the younger version of Tony Soprano. Felt they left Johnny Soprano light on screen time as I think John Bernthal is a pretty good actor. I enjoyed it for the gratuitous violence but it was a few years too late to really garner any traction. Not bad, not groundbreaking. Michela de Rossi was eye candy as Giussepina.

Felt like the movie was mostly member berries with weak character development of Dickie Moltisanti and then just straight trolling from David Chase with the Harold stoyline being shown so prominently just so Chase could say oops, not Harold... got'heem at the end.

I see what you mean. I think it also has a great deal with the trope of Mafiaese has been done so often and it's akin to beating a dead horse that the character development would be next to impossible at this point. The Harold arc was peculiar in it didn't entirely make sense, but you're spot-on that it did seem Chase was trolling with the ending. Though if I recall back to the series Tony had alluded that Dickie was off'd by someone involved with "this thing of ours" but perhaps I'm mistaken.

Dave Chappelle: The Closer
Another past his prime comedy special from Dave, but it’s definitely better than his last one. This one actually has a point and nails it pretty easily. Right off the bat it’s:
Joke at Asian people’s expense - *crickets*
Joke at Jewish people’s expense - *crickets*
Joke at Black people’s expense - *roaring laughter*
In front of a mostly white audience. Absolutely brilliant and he doen’t even mention it afterwards, he just lets it play out and moves on. The guy is still a genius, but he’s gotten to that “more worried about making a point and forgets to be funny” stage for the most part.

I'm sorry but Rami Malek is not a good actor. America is well past the point where we all should have realized and accepted this. He's a one-trick pony with a soft-spoken nervous bug-eyed act that only works in Mr. Robot because that's such a well-made show. He was laughably bad in Bohemian Rhapsody and in every other movie role he's been forgettable at best.
Movie was a 5 for me.
**SPOILER**
Spectre/Blofeld are much more interesting villains, so to kill them off and then hand over the "bad guy" role to Dr. No was a bad move. Also it was way too long and didn't need to end the way it ended.

Dune 6/10
My least favorite Villeneuve movie wo far. Other than the visuals its pretty boring. Its very slow, with a bunch of slo-mo shots. It reminded me of the snyder cut where there's also a bunch of slow motion, which just make the movie longer for no reason. So yea, this could easily be a 90 minute movie and it wouldnt make it worse or better. The acting was fine, even tho i think Chalamet was pretty poor. Sometimes i had a feeling he's reading while delivering a line. Music is just as you're watching a Nolan movie, as with Hans Zimmer i dont expect anything new anymore. Anyway, i have no idea about the source material and this didnt make me wanna know more.

Most people hated Blade Runner 2049, and while I'll admit I only saw it once at the theater, I enjoyed the crap outta it and felt it was a cool experience. Looking for the same with Dune, and why I'm going to IMAX instead of watching at home like I did with Godzilla v Kong.

i enjoyed 2049 more, even tho that movie is also pretty slow paced, but i did enjoy the story more and the visuals looked better, with more colors, while in Dune there's only the color of sand. My friend fell asleep twice during Dune and the other one thought it was just average. So yea, this will probably be mixed, as I saw lots of people giving this a 10/10 and then there's only average scores.... I dont think anyone will say it's bad.

Dune had moments of greatness, but very clearly felt like you only watched half a movie by the end of it. Which it seems like there’s plenty in Dune to stretch it into 2 films, but somehow we still got a ton of filler and scenes that dragged on for no reason.
I also love how they didn’t advertise it anywhere as “Part 1”, until you see it on the title screen.
I’d give it an 8/10 but since I only got half a story it’s 4/10.

They should have been more definitive about it from the start. They can always change track if Part I is a flop, which it doesn't appear to be. If it does well on HBO Max, it looks like Warner will make sure at least Part II gets made along with their Bene Gesserit prequel series. Villeneuve wants to make a third movie based on Dune Messiah. Man I was so thrown off by the part 1 on the intro LOL. Zendaya made off like a bandit on this one.
I think it did a good job sticking to the Dune formula and still presenting the material well to a newb.
My one single bicker on the entire movie was them leaving out Paul's tears giving water to the dead after he killed that Freman guy. Think that's a pretty crucial aspect to how sacred water is.
I enjoyed all the slow, atmospheric scenes people keep complaining about as boring. Was like a modern day 2001 space odyssey

One of the biggest compliments I can give Dune: I'm not a big Sci-Fi person and this is probably one of the best Sci-Fi films I've seen. It won't be for everyone. It has stunning visuals and is very philosophical. Those looking for a pure action film will be disappointed. Dune is smart, very smart. Villeneuve was really the only person I could think could pull Dune off. I think Dune and Blade Runner: 2049 are going to be better appreciated over time because of the ambition of both movies and just how well both visions are fleshed out. Neither is going to be a general audience smash; they are complex world building exercises that demand and reward the viewer's attention as long as you buy into the mythos. I'm interested to see the two critical characters of Feyd and Alia in part 2. I'm a little surprised the former didn't make an appearance in part 1.

They flipped a lot of stuff around, which I didn't have a huge problem with. It was decent, which is the best that can be hoped for, but the subject matter is 80% internal dialogue, which he seemed to replace with a lot of moaning in desert scenes. We shall see how the second is.

-The Gift- (2015) with Jason Bateman & Joel Edgerton as the omnipresent "Gordo" who has a 25 year prior relationship with Bateman's character. I watched half of this some years back and didn't finish it for some damn reason. Sat down for it over this weekend.
Anytime you can get Bateman in front of a camera is a good time. Here is no exception. Needs repeat viewings to gather it all in, but it's all there including the decided denouement.
Rebecca Hall plays Bateman's wife (she's wary of her husband right from the beginning as they walk thru their new house purchase) and she's alright, but this film belongs to the two leads and it's one body blow after another right thru the closing portal.
Bateman always gives us what we want and never grudges it.

Don't forget split. He has some good ideas but is terrible at executing.
Yeah, that trilogy with Glass had the potential to be epic, but in the end spiraled down to an anti-climatic snoozing disappointment, just like all of M. Night’s work.
Not following through would be the most epic failure I could think of. Orders of magnitude above the Bakshi Lord of the Rings debacle.
that was an epic fail. thank goodness peter jackson was able to make us forget all about that debacle (which i believe ended at the battle of helm's deep)

"Red Notice" on Netflix.
6.8/10
This movie should have been way more fun than it was. Reynolds was pretty good but the Rock looked like he was going through the motions and nearly sleep walking thru the flick. Gal was awful. You knew there was going to be a twist at the end, just have to guess what it is.

I saw House of Gucci yesterday. Loved it! It’s soapy, campy and real sparkly, everything I like in a movie. I don’t know any Lady Gaga songs and I didn’t see the last movie she was in, so besides the inauguration, this was the first time I’ve ever paid attention to her and I thought she was perfect. I’m hearing lots of criticism of her acting and accent but she hit the outrageousness of the character spot on. And Jared Leto—-pushed it right over the top. I’m sure there are more than a few aging overweight, balding actors who could have played the part but Leto totally got it done. And I have absolutely no criticisms of Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Salma Hayek and Jeremy Irons, they all held their own as I would expect. The only thing I was puzzled about was the time setting. It all took place in the 90’s but visually it looked like 70s to 80s (possibly because everything in Europe looks old?) and because of the Donna Summer soundtrack. I never even noticed how long the movie was until it was over. And now on this cold rainy weekend I will stay in, drink tea and do my absolute favorite thing after a good movie—read everything I can find on ALL the subjects portrayed and how it all really went down. 9/10

Midnight Mass - 6/10
i think Mike Flanagan is one of the best directors/creators right now and if you love long monologues, you will probably love this. For me tho, it was just too slow and i didnt really care for any of the characters, even tho most of them do give a good performance. There is a person thats pretty easy to hate and she does a great job. The last episode is pretty retarded... I'd still recommend it if you like mystery/fantasy drama. Bly Manor and Hill house were just better in my opinion.

The Last Duel - 6/10
so after Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Exodus, Ridley Scott once again tries to make a historic classic. Well, this one is not as good as Gladiator or KoH, but it for sure is better than Exodus. I will say everything in this movie looks very good, from the locations, castles, interior design to costumes. Its also shot pretty well. Best part of the film is the last duel, which is one of the best 1vs1 fights I saw in years. We can also finally see why armor is useful in a knight fight. Now for the problems i had. The film comes in 3 chapters. All 3 are pretty much the same and lots of scenes are reused or just shown from a different angle, with little differences from other 2 chapters. So that makes the movie at least 30 min longer than it should/needed be, but i guess Scott had to make this over 2h long. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are also pretty meh. I just couldnt buy them as these historic figures. Id have rather go with some European actors. Adam Driver does try acting like a 14th century knight, but sometimes it looks like he's trying too hard. So the only part that was acted really well for me is from Jodie Comer, while everyone else is fine at best. All in all, pretty good and it showed me Scott can still make a good movie. I also had no idea what this movie was or is about, so whoever marketed this should be fired, as i didnt hear anything about this until like last week.

The Ghostbusters fanboys who were so hysterically apoplectic about the (forgettable) female reboot have finally gotten the patronizing nostalgia porn they crave.
You liked the Marshmallow Man? Then you'll LOVE Baby Marshmallow Men! Look how cute! Try not to think about it too much.
You liked the Key Master/Gatekeeper/Gozer plotline in the original? Let's do that again, but bigger!
You loved the original cast? They're all here at the end to save the day even though you've spent the previous 90 minutes with other characters. Also, they're old and one of them is dead, so it's time for you to cry now because these are your childhood heroes.
You like Paul Rudd, right? (Of course you do, everyone likes Paul Rudd.) Here's Paul Rudd being Paul Rudd!
There were some good parts but overall I thought it was a mess of focus group fan service.

Oh i thought you were whining about her looks.
She was married secretly to an African American.
Surprises continued when a man named Ike Jones stepped forward to claim the body, saying he was Inger Steven’s husband. Inger’s brother Carl and her father and step mother came into town. The group had a private memorial service on May 4. The next day Inger’s body was cremated and the ashes scattered into the Pacific Ocean.
Turns out Inger and Ike married in Tijuana, Mexico on November 18 1961. Jones was an athlete at UCLA and had a versatile career as a musician, actor, and movie producer. The two kept there marriage a secret for fear it would damage Steven’s career. Marriages between black men and white women were not popular in the 1960’s, as evidenced by actress Mai Britt’s career plunge when she married Sammy Davis Junior.

Matrix 4 - 3/10
Should have stopped after 1. I dont know if theres one single thing good in this movie. Perhaps the beginning. Idk if it was good, but i did find it interesting, but after like 20 min it all goes to shit. Keanu was fine and pretty much all the actors did a fine job, but no one was as good as the original cast. Even supporting characters from 99 were much better than these new characters. New agent Smith was shit and Morpheus was close to shit. The direction was pathetic. There wont be one memorable moment from this film. Fuck, even reloaded and revolutions had its moments, but here it was all just bad. Fight scenes and gun fight sucked, the music was also not even close to being as good as in the previous films. The effects were also nothing special. Its pretty sad that a movie from 99 looked way better than this. Theres also a little switch at the end, showing us how Trinity is now pretty much the one, which was expected, cause "wahman strong", but even if that didnt happen the movie would still suck. Anyway, its time to stop with this retarded franchise.

Ghostbusters Afterlife - Glorified Fan Fiction stranger things crossover. Which I guess is most franchise cinema is glorified fan fiction at this point. Egon as a ghost was morbid and weird. But overall enjoyable movie. The 1 to 1 throwbacks to the original were too much. Luckily our beloved Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon saved the day.

tee, hee.
FYI, IFC is airing "Scarface" tomorrow Saturday. They too have shoved it into a 4 hour time slot, but the good part is they'll show it uncut, with commercials. So, I'm going to DVR it. Even the cut version on AMC was a blast last weekend. So I am looking forward to that tomorrow. The kicker? I got the fucker on the DVD shelf and won't touch it. There is just something about getting a DVD, putting it in and then having to watch it thru that venue. It's all psychological and has me completely unnerved.

Slow start, Cheadle is good but not as a leading character. Del Toro is out of his element here, like him better as a bad ass. Decent overall cast, story hard to follow. Soderbergh can't get away from the Ocean's 11 team, can't get away from the formula either. Ray Liotta solid as always, dude is a beast.

Found -Surviving the Game- ('94) on TUBI this morning. Seen it many times, but not for years.
I still can't figure out how the Ice T character gets back to civilization. The Rutger Hauer character destroyed one plane, and flies out in the only other aircraft. We're then shown "T" getting up off the ground still by the cabin. There are no other survivors there. 3 days later we're told he's back in Seattle.
Appreciate it.

Working thru -Marathon Man- '76 again. Hasn't lost much in 45+ years. Roy Scheider is at zenith here. Enjoy the way he comes into New York to visit his brother (Hoffman), but it's strictly because of a letter Hoffman sent him informing him about a mugging in Central Park and a woman, a stranger who he's begun a relationship with. Scheider smells a rat and rightfully so. The way he queries Hoffman about the mugging, about the relationship immediately upon initiating the visit is sheer perfection. He never lets on to his brother about the alarms that have went off, but we the viewer see it all.
Film. American film.

Goldman wrote some excellent books/scripts. There is a sequel to Marathon Man called Brothers.
And the relationship is a key to this story. The Hoffman character is trying mightily to work thru the shadow of their father having actually seen the immediate aftermath of his suicide +, (this child, he saw it coming), while Scheider has been running from it all his life.
Scheider's "Doc" is bitter, "Babe" is not. "Doc" veers into his life's work chased by the effervescent shadows.
"Babe" at some damn time in his life learned how to use that method of the old man's suicide with the actual tool and that education saves his life as he is more than ready when Devane calls him out at the house on the hill.
***It's the sequence at the house that still bothers me end all these decades later, when "Babe" hustles the group thru the porch and into the living room without one, or, all of them taking advantage of scrum. We're not shown the actual herding of the group. They're just outside one moment and in the living room the next, Lee, and the director can declare "Action!" once again. I always shift about in the old recliner when this transference takes place.
ADDENDUM:::And Olivier arriving thru customs in New York and having a moment with his fellow Nazi about America and Americans..."They always believed God was on their side. Now, they don't seem so sure." I don't know if that was in Goldman's book, but it's a swell touch to lay that in there like that.
Just one more thing...it was brilliant to have the fellow Nazi played by the venerable Marc Lawrence conspire/he chuckles with Szell when he wisecracks about Americans just above. The other henchman Richard Bright reacts as well, but is dismissive. Why? He's clueless. He's too young to have borne the war, he's there for the money and nothing else.

Stars Lindsay Crouse as the woman and a slew of characters in-their-prime:::J.T. Walsh is nails as usual, Ricky Jay, William H. Macy is clean and new, Mike Nussbaum and Joe Mantegna: all under the peerless direction of David Mamet who also wrote the story and the screenplay.
I dread watching it because of the inevitability of it ending.

If Mark Wahlberg wasnt cast as Sully, id gave it a 5. I had a feeling i was watching Cade Yager from the Transformers and not Sully from the games. Anyway, that Nate Fillion fan film was still 10x better than this wanna be fun adventure.
Oh and the music was also shit. Should have just used the music from the games... anyway, play the games or watch cut scenes from the games on youtube.

that's kind of dumb then. The story arc from 4 alone could have made a fantastic movie while incorporating parts of 3 as well for background. Nate, Sam, Rafe, Nadine, Sully, Elaina. Flying all over the world to find Libertalia and the epic climax at the treasure. A fun era of my life. I could have made an excellent 2.5-3 hour movie out of that.

Well in this one you only get a young Nate, Sully, thats not acting or looking like Sully, Chloe and a fake Nadine, as she acts like Nadine from 4, but has another name. Antonio Banderas plays the main villain, but idk of who he reminds me from games. Anyway, he does a fine job, but what they do with him is just retarded. Oh, theres also a little scene with kid Nate and Sam, which is pretty much like in U4, when Sam leaves Nate... it also looks like they wanna make a sequel.

they needed to make it like the game, particularly the 4 story arc while referencing the earlier ones. The game story arc production was just perfect. They never did quite determine whether Sam and Nadine were going to end up together, but that seemed pretty obvious from the DLC sequel to U4 ("The Lost Legacy") though not mentioned in the epilogue of U4. Now the Nate and Sam kid chapters were pretty good in the game fwiw. Another thing I was thrilled about in the game was that Nate ended up with Elaina and not Chloe.

Also, love how even after being stabbed like 10 times, you can still move pretty normal just the next day. Another thing you just have to love is how a skinny girl can be stronger than full adult men. I did like that the character dies just as her character in Once upon a time in Hollywood. Anyway, if u like shitty acting and shitty horror, with a bunch of scare fakeouts, this is just for you.

The Wailing - 8/10
One of the best horror, mystery movies i ever saw. Im not surprised, cause most Korean stuff I watched was pretty damn good. Theres not much to say about the movie, other than its very open for interpretation to the viewer and it keeps u interested until the end and even after it. Highly recommended and so far the best thing i saw this year, and its not even close.
I also saw the zombie series All of us are dead, which is also Korean. I thought it was ok, but nothing special. Still think Kingdom is the best recent zombie series out there. So i'd say id gave this a 6/10, but its closer to a 5 then a 7.
oh, right, also saw the Fifth Elment for like the 5th time yesterday before i went to sleep, and i guess thats like a 7/10. Perhaps even an 8, but i guess i already saw it too many times, so the score is kinda going down with time.

Break Even (2020) : 2/10
Moderately well done action movie... ruined by a bumfuck ending. Waste of a good two hours.

The Only Living Boy In New York (2017) : 5/10
A largely A-list cast but the movie itself was mundane and lacking in plot, ending was milquetoast.

The Chosen (1981) : 6/10
A cute old-timer movie based on a book I'd read back in middle school about Jewish teenage boys in New York. The plot is largely boring and not full of humor, but it's an interesting historical movie and to think what the Jews had to be going through back in the 1940s in America and the divided line amongst Jews between the pro-Israel Zionists and the minority group of Jews against the proposition of a sovereign Israel.

I may have mentioned this film some years back but I'm not sure, so, I'll lodge it now since I caught it again this afternoon on TUBI.
-Aftermath- from 2013. It is Chris Penn's final film and it's lightening struck start to finish. Concerns an ex-con/Penn working a construction job that goes sour for him and the (aftermath) of his termination. Anthony Michael Hall is his boss. He's nails too as is the entire cast. The dedication of this varied cast to make it something special is indicative thru each frame, each (chapter).
It's Penn's final moment, he's turned loose and he's on fucking fire.
The filming technique is a bit haywire, but it works just fine.
Film. American film.

The Batman - 5 or a 6/10
I watched it for the second time with my friend and i am not sure if i liked it more or less than the first time. I gotta say the film does look really well shot and I dont even mind some of the slow shots, so for all i care it could been even longer. The acting was also pretty good. I knew Pattinson would be fine, cause he is a pretty damn good actor. I also loved to see how Batman does not take his mask off every 5 seconds, as the heroes in the MCU, which goes on my nerves, especially with Spiderboy. Anyway, everyone was fine and i dont have any complaints about the acting. Now where I do have complaints is the story, which i think is god damn awful. The whole Riddler's plan is kinda retarded and I did not really care for this ''Zodiac'' version of him. I also have no idea why he would wanna kill Bruce. Just cause he thought his father was corrupt? That has nothing to do with the kid, so yea, just stupid. I also did not like Batman pretty much working with the Police. I am fine if he's with Gordon, but not going into crime scenes where everyone is there. The Police should also blacklist him once he punched Gordon and caused a pretty big mess on the freeway with the Penguin. But, i guess no one cared. Just as no one cared to arrest Penguin, even tho Gordon witnessed him doing stuff that would get him in jail and especially the free way accident, where there were at least some people killed. Well, perhaps no one was actually killed, cause even Batman should have been dead at least twice. Fucking took an explosion to the face like a champ. Also, why the fuck not take his mask off. Its clear as day not everyone in the police likes him. I also do not like this Batman that runs, i mean walks, right into bullets. I thought he would be sneaky, but nope, he just goes at you like fucking Iron Man and is lucky no one points the gun up a little, cause that leather mask aint protecthing shit. Also for being a detective, he's pretty shit, as even the Penguin has to solve his spanish puzzle. And that pictures that were taken of the club, why not go look at the place from where the pictures were taken? Also, all this high profile people acting like retards and hanging out in a mafia club, sharing their secrets with whores they are fucking. Holy fuck, how stupid is everyone here. Its also very convenient that Batman is at the Penguins office right when Selina gets in there, so that they can further the plot. There's actually some more scenes where Batman is at the right place at the right time.... Anyway, there's more problems I have, but I dont have the will to write... Even after all of my bitching, I'd still say go and watch it.
Oh yea, and why the fuck have the Joker there. Just make a movie without him... And that deleted scene with him... Ugh... its like they wanna make an even worse version than the Jared Leto one. If you have him, just give the guy a normal fucking face, its not that hard to do.

Licorice Pizza - 7/10
Better than I thought. Not as slow as some of PTA's other recent work, laugh out loud funny at times. Still weird to center a 2021 film around a romance between a 25 year old and a 15 year old though.

Good Will Hunting - 7/10 - actually got around to seeing it. Like the relics of 1997 like the old computers, mailboxes and the like. Like, don't even bother emailing me... just leave me a voicemail and I'll get back to you when I get around to it.

The Wedding Trip (2021) : 7/10
Kind of corny in some places, some dumb bathroom humor, but overall a cute plot and adorable ending and multiple epilogues.

I watched most of the John Woo's Hong Kong's classics, so, A better Tomorrow 1 & 2, The Killer and Hard Boiled. I guess as a whole they are a 7/10, while I had most fun watching Hard Boiled, which is just insane. I'll watch Bullet in the head later and i hope it's still as good as i remember.

The film is serviceable, but the opening is sheer perfection.

Death on the Nile: 4/10 so far because two thirds of the way thru because I fell asleep.
Boring, underwhelming low budget looking flick. Kenneth Branaugh keeps it from being a 2/10.

Came thru a cable channel this week so I took another view...never figured he'd be the 1 to deliver a cathartic effect like this a half-century on...
