7/10-- Could have been a bit better, but really captured some of the better aspects of 60's spy movies. Kids had a blast. Still had a few nifty/subtle touches that played around with the idea/concept for adults to find.

I saw Temple Grandin. Very good movie, kinda silly at times, and not a serious "macho guy movie" but it was enlightening and entertaining. Danes was fantastic. The feel good ending kind of got to me and I was I very glad I watched it. I would give this highly entertaining movie a rating of Axe Murderer.

Flipping through Encore and watched "Gangs of New York" the other night. It was....okay. I felt like it tried to be more epic and intelligent than it really was. It teetered the line between entertainment and annoying hubris. Daniel Day-Lewis was awesome and the only bright spot but Leo acted like the consistently overrated actor he is.

Chugking was good. 2046 is better. Check out Last Life in the Universe too.

Saw X-Men first class for july 4th. It didn't suck terribly, and it wasn't great. Good cast. Shit script. Cool fighting sequences, but that's expected for a superhero flick. It was not Marvel's Dark Knight. Hopefully the Wolverine movie gets it right. (Wish Aronofsky was directing it tho) 5.5/10

Saw The Tree of Life. It was close to perfection, but wouldn't recommend it under the circumstances of it being labeled as a major motion flick by any means. Closer to Space Odyssey than anything. No action, minimal dialogue... more like a symphony of memories than anything. 8.5/10

Saw Horrible Bosses last night. Meh. Pretty much all of the good parts are in the trailer.

Anniston is hot as hell in it though. The dude with the light beard has a really annoying pitch in his voice. By the end of the movie I was hoping for as little dialogue from him at all.

Jason Sudeikis or whatever his name is kind of a lady killer and it just doesn't play well considering how goofy he looks.

I've been watching the 1994 remake of "The Getaway" with Alec Baldwin & Kim Basinger. I put it on the DVR, tore it apart, and found a good motion picture. Not great by any means, but, a stout effort. These two actors are strong here. Baldwin takes her along with him and she follows without hesitation. Doesn't grudge him the pole. It's something just to watch these two work and they labor mightily. Both are at prime. Both equally beautiful. When they're on the screen the movie is high end. When they're not, it's a problem. It was filmed here on location.

There's a part, in the beginning. Baldwin's character: "Doc McCoy" is double crossed on the border and ends up in a Mexican prison on a 20-year sentence. She comes down to visit him. He's bearded, sweaty. The bars, not regular jail cell bars, but, just rebar separates them as they stand and converse in whispers. He can get out if she'll contact a big shot (James Woods) who operates a crime syndicate along the border. The camera switches back & forth between them, lines being read, facial expressions being shown in response to the lines.

- "You'll contact him."

- Her eyes well.

- "Just get me the Hell out of here."

- She searches his face as near panick seizes her

- "Can you do that." We're not shown his face as this line is delivered. Just hers.
Then immediately,
- "Can you do that for me?" We're shown his face now. His voice breaks here & falls alarmingly softer. The tears don't well, but, they enter around his eyes.

- "I'm not spending the next 20 years without you."

A good portion of the remainder of the motion picture is wisely spent on these two as they come to the realization of his request. He knew what would happen. He knew. And her unconditional acceptance of the terms that it presented for her. She found out. And absolved him of his responsibility.

"You'd a done the same for the me. Wouldn't you, Doc?"

I approve of the Cubster's entrance into the Club, I always thought other forums (like the NFL ) could use more Culburn. As for that flick, I wasn't a real fan of that movie but it did have some great parts specifically everything with Tilly and Madsen, and Richard Farnsworth dominated hard in his cameo. Best scene of film tbh

Kidulthood, the British equivalent of Larry Clark's "Kids." Decent, but nowhere near as raw as Kids. Too melodramatic at times, with some scenes almost coming off like a parody of "troubled youth" films.

It's just that McGraw couldn't act. And McQueen wasn't a good enough actor to carry her. Basinger is delicate (it could of went either way there) in the remake. She's in over her head, but, she trusts Baldwin's talent & heart to keep her safe. She's trying to keep up with Baldwin, but, Baldwin waits for her, takes care of her. Takes her with him. McQueen didn't have that selflessness in him.

Adjustment Bureau

4/10

Stupid premise, poorly executed and full of holes. Matt Damon, who really gave a shit if he ever ended up with the girl?

Love over the presidency? No. No one who's been a Congressman since age 24, running for Senate, would dump a shot at knowing the future for some girl he met in the men's room.

Also, the adjustment guys themselves, incompetent fucks. How did they manage for so long and fuck one up so bad?

It was more about romance, not much about adjustment. If you are looking for a cool sci fi movie, this ain't it. Seems like something M. Night would make.

Horribly predictable ending... must have been written by a chick.

I saw the first 3/4 or so of Hall Pass. A few good puns, but this is the type of movie you should never let your woman see. I don't like it when guys write movies and give up secrets on how we masturbate, think of other women during sex, and check out women in public all the time. I also didn't like how incompetent it made the dudes seem when they were trying to get laid. Even if it's true, don't say it. Let me live in my fantasy world, thank you very much. Jonah Hex. Went into it knowing it was a wannabe-blockbuster piece of shit. Came away thinking it was just a straight-up a piece of shit.

Pity of it all is it had so much potential. Obviously big budget, with a good cast (give or take) and a good license (IMO, at least-- I grew up on that hokey shit). But it was under-served by a weak script with ZERO character development which somehow still required an absurd amount of flashbacks to clock in around 70 minutes. But I can honestly say it was undone by the WORST EDITING I HAVE EVER FUCKING SEEN IN A MAJOR STUDIO RELEASE.

Holy shit! Anybody who's done any video/film editing should check the movie out as a reverse exemplary tale: what not to do. Why would people entrust a big-budget film to an idiot, then release a turd?

Still not as bad as Avengers or Wild Wild West, at least...

In all, I'd say what I saw was mildly amusing, but overall kinda faggy and harmful to the male race. I'd give it a rating of ChumpDumper.
I actually liked that about the movie. We know about it, but we let you have your fantasies anyway because it gives us the upper hand while still letting you believe you have it. Everybody wins.

I saw Across 110th street (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/across_110th_street/). This is a crime film that was made during the blaxploitation era. Its filled with the N-word and by N-word I mean ######. A ton of graphic violence, foul languages and all kinds of racial slurs from blacks to whites, whites to blacks, whites to hispanics, etc. Its also loaded with nudity as well. The best scene is when this italian gangster goes to this black gangsters repair garage and shits on him in front of all his men, then it looks like the black gangster is down for the count but right before the wop leaves that nigga tears into him and just shits all over him and all his men laugh in the mafia guy's face. Shit was EPIC. I have to admit tho all the gratuitous language, racism, and nudity got very cringeworthy, uncomfortable, and awkward at times. Kind of unpleasant to watch.

Anyways, I give this nearly perfect movie a rating of DoK.

The only thing I could compare Arrested Development to is Inception in the sense that while I liked Inception somehwat it was sneaky stupid but everyone acts like its brillaint. Its also similar in that if you don't like it people will act like you're retarded or something. So a lot of people pretend to like more than they do so it will make them look cool. I honestly cannot believe so many people loved AD that much. Just like I cannot believe so many people thought Inception was so smart when it was fairly simple and was so ludicrous, convoluted, and silly in parts.

Just saw 30 minutes or less. Pretty damn funny. I'm not an Eisenberg fan at all (still waiting for him to do something diff than being a jewish michael cera), but Aziz, Danny McBride, and that retarded guy that's Danny's friend make the movie fucking hilarious.

I've always liked aziz on Parks and Rec, and he delivers in this movie. Hope he keeps getting more work. What's weird is that this movie and Horrible Bosses both seem to not even try to stick to a premise that's steeped in reality, and don't try to resolve the plot either. It's just all about a journey where funny shit happens along the way. I don't remember comedy movies so blatantly not caring about a real plot resolution but either way, this movie and Horrible Bosses were pretty funny.

negatives--annoying "low talking" thru the entire film; Alan Rickman, actor with probably the sexiest, most perfect English accent ever, speaking with an "American" accent :td

positives--tricky dialogue (every line has about 20 possible meanings); Alan Rickman full-frontal nudity :D

It integrated a historcial narrative using old news clips with a fictional murder tale with Alfred Hitchcock.

Cape Fear - the original from the 1960s

great stuff - gregory peck as the good guy, family man. Robert Mitchum as the bad guy, a psychotic creep. One of the best portrayals of a bad guy ever.

Giuseppe

^Good one, Bender. And I'll tell ya, the remake has grown on me as well. There they ferret out the "family man's" participation in his own predicament when they tell us that he did not represent "Cady" properly and should be disbarred. In the original that is not so clearly defined, so of course your sentiments are with Peck there and not so much with Nolte 30 years later. The young girl in the original is much more innocent than the Lewis girl (who is rebelling as the remake opens), so again you have less sympathy for Lewis.

DeNiro goes over the top a bit without necessity. Mitchum is more calculating. He's quietly seething and so it is far more personal with him. DeNiro is all over the place. Mitchum operates in a far more limited area.

In the original there is no affair twixt the girl (Barry Chase) and Peck, so you lose that. The Chase character has to "act" the harm that Mitchum has done her/censors would not permit anything like the remake. In the remake the girl (Illeana Douglas) has a stake in all their lives, so when DeNiro takes a bite out of her it is devastating for all concerned, characters and viewers alike.

Joe Don Baker is a little silly in the remake, but, you must have him so "Cady" has somebody to kill BEFORE they stop him from killing. If "Cady" doesn't kill in the original (the nondescript sheriff deputy who gives himself away by swatting that mosquito)---or---Baker then you don't have a movie.

Bender

^--- I haven't seen the De Niro remake in such a long time, I can't comment on it. In the original, I think Gregory Peck was just a witness to Cady beating someone else in an alley, so due to Peck's testimony as a witness, Cady was tossed in the can for 8 years - where he contemplated getting revenge...

Mitchum's portrayal of Cady was so great, it put me in the mood to try and watch for all his his noir films...

You're mistaken, Bender. Peck was Cady's lawyer, but, the explanation as to how he failed Cady's defense in the movie is vague and quickly dismissed. Not as cut & dry as in the remake where Nolte is shamed by the Fred Thompson character (early on) (that's a key scene and it's painful).

Yep, Mitchum is good there. Peck thinks he has him beat when he sends those 3 punks down to the docks to beat Cady up (with a tire chain). They get get the upper hand at first, but, then Cady see's blood and knocks two of them out and the third turns tail and runs with Cady in hot pursuit. I God's...I'd hate have the SOB after me.

And in the opening shot of the original (B&W) they show the wide panoramic shot of the town square and here comes Cady in that straw hat. You can make him out a mile away.

You're right though:::Mitchum is so freakin' good in that role.

Bender
10-23-2011, 01:20 PM
hmmmm.... I just watched it on my DVR a few days ago, so I was sure he was just a witness.

this is from imdb's plot:

Small-town lawyer Sam Bowden's life becomes torturous when Max Cady re-enters his life. Cady went to jail for 8 years after Bowden testified that Cady attacked a young woman. Now that Cady has been released, he begins to terrorize Bowden and his family, particularly targeting Bowden's daughter, Nancy.

Giuseppe
10-23-2011, 01:32 PM
Perhaps you're right, Bender. I just seemed to remember it different, but, I could be wrong.

How bout Cady's story when got out of prison and went back home to his wife:::"she was married. husband was at work. kids at school. took her to a motel in the next town. after two days I kicked her out without her clothes and gave a fair chance to work her way back home."

That's Max for ya.

Choice lodgement!

The black driver is done well. His wife & he on the very edge. He kicks his bosses ass at the restaurant before taking up DeNiro's "5 minute" decision. It costs him his life as he's killed instantly driving away from the bank. And there they don't forget his wife. She finds out via the cocktail bar television.

***The one beef I have with this picture is there is too much time after the bank robbery. It's almost like the movie winds up & down there and then still has a long way to go.

I wondered the same thing. At the time of filming Ox-Bow, he went by Henry.

Morgan made his screen debut (originally using the name "Henry Morgan") in the 1942 movie To the Shores of Tripoli. His screen name later would become "Henry 'Harry' Morgan" and eventually Harry Morgan, to avoid confusion with the then-popular humorist of the same name.

Bender

hmmm, I didn't know that. So this hasn't been a wasted day on ST after all :p:

I thought you were thinking of henry fonda, and accidentally put henry morgan...

Last movie I caught was An Act of Violence (1947)

after I was about 10 or 15 minutes into it, I realized I had seen it a couple of years ago. But I watched it anyway.

Van Heflin plays an ex-soldier from WW2, with a dark secret. A young and scrumptious Janet Leigh plays his wife, who thinks the world revolves around him - little does she know! Robert Ryan is the ex-soldier from the same outfit, who knows the truth about Van Heflin...

pretty good flick - it was right around 1.5 hours... any longer, would have been too long.
