San Antonio Spurs (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/sas) restricted free-agent center Tiago Splitter (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4306) could command an offer sheet that averages $8.5 million to $9 million annually, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Portland Trail Blazers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/por) are expected to be a suitor for Splitter, league sources said. The Utah Jazz (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/uth)and Atlanta Hawks (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/atl) have salary-cap space, a need for a young center and general managers – Dennis Lindsey and Danny Ferry, respectively – who were Spurs front-office executives when Splitter came into the organization.
The Spurs will be in a strong position to match an offer sheet and keep Splitter, because they'll free of Stephen Jackson's $10 million salary and expect to re-sign Manu Ginobili at a lesser salary than the $14.1 million he made this season.
The baseline for a Splitter offer sheet will likely be the three-year, $25 million deal that Houston awarded center Omer Asik in free agency a year ago, sources told Y! Sports.

Show loyalty, Tiago, or get the fuck out. We better not overpay. We have to add a good scoring guard and that has to be more important than Splitter. We'll just have to find a cheaper guy if push comes to shove. We HAVE to get another reliable scorer.

Players can agree to a contract, but cannot make it official until the 10th. If a player agrees in principle, you can guarantee he won't back out of the deal - right?

Because of how quickly the league turns the year around (two weeks after the Finals), they need time to figure out the cap, max salaries and exceptions for the following season. So that period is called the moratorium. Teams can make offers, but they can do anything official, because they don't know for sure what the cap will be. So no one knows which trades will be allowable (for sure) until after the moratorium is over.

This will probably set the market for Evans. If a desperate team loaded with cap space comes out with a $7-9 Million average, he probably won't get much more than that. If they go near max, then it's pretty much over.

They should still renounce him. That doesn't prevent them from re-signing him at all, but it opens up the rest of the cap space earlier. If Manu wants to pull a Duncan and take what's left over after the Spurs spend their money, then it would make sense to renounce him and re-sign him at the end.

In a move that gives the Rockets the necessary salary cap space to offer the free agent big man a maximum salary contract in their meeting that is expected to take place Sunday night, they agreed to send forward Thomas Robinson to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for two second-round draft picks and the rights to Kostas Papanikolau and Marko Todorovic, two people with knowledge of the deal confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.

What you're saying jives with staying over the cap. If the Spurs want to bring back the same team, they'll stay over the cap and only improve with the MLE. So they'll just re-sign everybody and ignore free agents except for a small one of two that could help like Aminu or Casspi. Then, they'll focus on development and chemistry to get them over the hump.
If they go under the cap, they'd be doing it to make a major acquisition. It might seem counter-intuitive, but that's the way it is.

Well, as ass backwards as that may seem then they'll be over the cap to do the same thing they did last year expect other teams will have improved, have one more year to gel as well while our best players are going to get older. Kind of stings to say all that and hope that Pop actually throws Kawhi a bone and makes him an intricate part of the team but I'm not so sure.. I think it'll be more opportunities from 3. I don't see Pop taking the ball out of Parkers hands and Kawhi won't run pick and roll with him.

He'd get at least his QO, which is about $5 Million. That'd probably be the start of his contract, so he would get something like a $11M/2, $16.5M/3 or a $22M/4 deal. The two sides could agree to start below the QO, but they've guaranteed Tiago that much already, so he has little incentive to go below that.

"Long story short, if the expected salary cap comes to fruition, the Pelicans could offer Evans a contract starting at $11,378,284. More than likely, that would prevent the Kings from matching and make Evans a Pelican. Even more likely, New Orleans wouldn’t offer quite that much, but that’s the amount available.
If the Pelicans sign Evans, would they use a three-guard backcourt, making Evans their nominal small forward, or would they explore a trade of Gordon? It’s always nice to add talent, but it’s not always simple to do or handle once its done."

Ellis is also at the point in his career where he wants to play deep into the playoffs. Other teams have shown interest — such as the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks — but those teams are handcuffed by salary cap restrictions and would need to make other moves in order to accommodate Ellis, who is willing to find common ground between salary and playing for a contender.

Doesn't it worry you a bit that this may mean Manu won't return?
Monta just seems a little too good to be in the Neal role.
you want manu back?
and if he wants to come back vet min...

The Spurs do need another guard who is a threat to beat his man off the dribble, while Monta is capable.... I have a hard time seeing him as the answer here. Gotta think the Spurs are just doing their due diligence and they will take a look at some other guards too.

I like the direction this is going, even if Monta doesn't happen... they're looking for a guy that can create his own shot... we need that.
This. They badly need another guy who can create his own shot off the dribble and attack the paint other than Tony.

I don't think this affects Manu coming back at all... it helps Manu because teams wouldn't be able to focus on him.

I don't know how likely that is, but JR would be a much better fit here than Monta that's for sure.

:lol just the thought of J.R. Smith in a Spurs uniform makes me laugh. He'd be everything the Spurs have ever been against.

Yet that hasn't stopped the Spurs from pursuing him in the past.

I know the Spurs have been interested in JR in the past, but it still makes me laugh. I don't see it happening, but who knows.

I'd take Friend Killer over Monta. Friend Killer is already used to coming off of the bench.

I'm surprised the Spurs aren't showing interest in OJ Mayo. If they're showing interest in Monta, they should be showing interest in all SG's..

Stackhouse and Jason Terry were both awful gunners until they went to a strong team with a system, and then they settled in as solid players who did what they needed to. This certainly wouldn't be an unprecedented gamble.

Yeah but theres a major difference between opting out of $11 million from a good team and opting out of $11 million from a bad team. Lets face it, Milwaukee is one place where good players go to rot. Milwaukee just flat out sucks. I don't blame him for getting out of there...

Am I seeing this right? Monta Ellis shot 29% from 3 last season on 94-328 shooting..? That is terrible. And he's a 31% career 3-point shooter. Nobody deserves $11 million per with those %'s..
I've watched him play numerous times, esp back in his Golden St days, and he's a legit scorer/shot creator, but I had no idea he was such a poor 3-point shooter.

You guys are underrating Monta Ellis, he can have a good FG% when he has good teammates, good playmaker, and hustle player.

He's taking boatloads of lousy, contested shots. If he were to work out here, he would be getting better looks thanks to our offense, and also passing the ball instead of taking the bad ones.
