It took the Timberwolves 9 years with KAT (and adding multiple #1 pick players) before they won, but the Spurs are supposed magically get all-star after drafting top 10 twice in the last five years.
Flawed premise. Towns was a run of the mill 1st overall pick, who despite flashing early MVP caliber potential, topped out as an All-NBA caliber one.
Wembanyama is the greatest prospect in 20 years, if not ever and appears wells on his way to living up to it, so this is not the typical re-build and shouldn't be treated as such.

Wasn't saying they should take 9 years to build a contender. That would be foolish and a waste of Wembanyama's younger years.
I was giving the Timberwolves as an example that sometimes things taking longer than anticipated. In other words, have some damn patience and if they are still looking porous after 2024 or 2025 then begin to panic.
Not after a rookie season where the team didn't/doesn't have other top end prospects around him - 2024 and 2025 should fix that even if '24 is considered a 'weak' draft - and better veterans to help guide the ship.
Plus, a season where he needed a good portion of it to adjust to the more rigorous schedule and better athletes of the NBA.
No disrespect to McDermott or Graham, but neither one is known as a 'winner' in the NBA or a great locker room stabilizer. Spurs need to find some veterans in that mold - as well as having a former NBA PG in the coaching staff (why hasn't that been done already?) - otherwise y'all are gonna be doing a lot of the same complaining next season.

Right? But to be fair, up until last year, they haven’t made the playoffs since 06, when Metta World Peace was still known as Ron Artest. Sooooooo.. let them have their time in the sun. We’ve had 2 generational big men, and now a 3rd as well as deep playoff runs and 5 titles. Let them have their 3rd team All NBA lol

Sabonis averaged 19.4, 13.7 and 8.2 on 60% shooting from the field for a winning team. It is OK he got all-NBA over Wemby.
Next season, Victor will be there.

Damn, Wemby's first year highlights would make a fantastic career retrospective for most big men.
Unreal. Gotta start building the OKC/DAL kryptonite team. Wolves may get worse this offseason.
It's like Kareem/KD/Iceman/Bill Russell had a 7'4" kid. He may be passing like the elder Sabonis by the tail end of his career. Insane stuff.
I'm hoping the draft and off season mark some significant moves toward a real team around him.

So I looked at #1 draft picks and ROTY throughout history and found these interesting facts:
There's been 77 #1 draft picks in NBA history, starting in 1947. There's been 75 Rookies of the year starting in 1953 (a few years had two ROTY due to a tie).
For both categories, I checked HOF status until 2003, that's 56 #1 Draft picks & 54 ROTY.
Out of those 56 first picks, 19 went to the Hall of Fame. That's roughly 34%.
Out of those 54 ROTY, 33 went to the Hall of Fame. That's roughly 61%.
There's only one season between the draft and the ROTY award, but ROTY is a way better assessment of a player's eventual career it looks like.
In these 54 seasons with both a first pick of the draft and ROTY award, a player was awarded both in the same season only 14 times.
Out of those 14 times, 10 went to the Hall of Fame. That's roughly 71%.
Of course 2003 was LeBron's year who got both and is obviously a lock for the HOF.
Anyway statistics say Victor has just under 3 chances out of 4 of making the HOF already, if history is any indication :lol

getting to top 5-10 is as much about consistency as it is about greatness. the passing he showed toward the end of last year, and the expected improvement in shooting gives reason for optimism. but to get into that tier of player, the conditioning will have to be there, and the turnovers just have to come down. i have no problem with him figuring out his limits, but thats what its going to take for him to break through
and minutes only ramp in the playoffs. jokic consistently averages 33-34 mpg, but last 2 years in postseason he averages 40mpg
i dont think wemby is there yet, and i dont think its a realistic expectation for this coming season.

you have not been paying attention…
in 1 season he went from being gassed in 2-4 mins and maxing out at 20-25 mins per game…
to
playing thirty plus minutes and dominating while he was on the floor
he got stronger and stronger as the season came to an end…he also got hungrier and hungrier and grew in intensity as the season ended….
he is going to begin the season with over 30 mins pr game and if he carries that extra muscle with ease- the league is fucked

The thing is most ppl when talking about best players have the offensive game in mind.
Wemby might not reach the top5 in that area next season but the unreal impact of his defense makes him almost by default Top3 (I REALLY wanna say top1 tbh :lol)
You can see how Luka's defense mitigate his overall level, Jokic's game is starting to be understood and well defended as we saw vs the Wolves. etc

Jokic/Luka/SGA/Giannis/Embiid. I think it’d be difficult for him to break into that tier, but I mean it’s absolutely possible. He’s almost certainly going to be the best defender in the league next year…even just making some modest improvements offensively in terms of efficiency and cutting down on turnovers and he’s going to be in the discussion though.
spurraider21 (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=31905) said it but I think the biggest thing is just consistency. Wemby had stretches of games as a rookie where he legitimately looked like the best player in the world, but there were also plenty of stretches where he clearly looked like a rookie (which is to be expected, the kid is 19/20). I think those other 5 guys I named are just more consistently great night in and night out but it’s entirely possible Wemby takes a large step forward and joins them. That’s just such an insane expectation for someone Wemby’s age in his 2nd season but if anyone can do it it’s him :lol

Embiid IF (big one) healthy I agree
Giannis it's very close/debatable
SGA/Luka don't have the defensive impact (SGA gambles a lot and gets steals but isn't a great 1vs1 defender)
I agree on the consistency, I didn't take it into account in my jugment tbh, but I'm assuming it's the next logical step, no reason he doesn't manage to pass it
If you consider the defensive impact as 50% of the valuation, Wemby wins bc of it all the time imo. Despite his numerous limitations at this stage of his career.

I know many would like to see him look like the Incredible Hulk, but while a little meat doesn't hurt too much in the upper body to play shoulders in the paint, it's actually mostly in the lower body that it must strengthen itself without affecting its primary qualities. If he gains too much muscle overall he will have stamina problems and will lack the quickness or agility to counter balls.
He was a 1500m runner, the big limit is to become a 400m runner. The ideal body type is undoubtedly that of a 400m hurdles or triple jump runner. Giannis plays like a 100m runner, and for his size, that already forces him to play slowly. On the other hand, it would be much more interesting to see him strengthen in the lower body because he would take up even more space on the floor, on the ground, would be a deterrent both in attack and defense and would be pushed around less in the paint.
But this must also be done slowly otherwise he risks injuries and we could even question the hypothesis of adding too much mass because he has been relatively spared from injuries despite his size thanks precisely to his flexibility. More muscles often also mean less flexibility. More muscles, less flexibility, these are tendons which will withstand twisting with much greater violence.
I think he can be trusted because his agent has already said they have no plans to make him a Giannis, but I hope if he adds volume he knows precisely where. And I doubt it's the upper body.
i see that vic's been working out with crawford. very nice.

Would love to see him implement two things. A skyhook shot like Kareem. And a set shot, free-throw style but him keeping the ball high in the air when facing his defender and all he needs is a wrist flick to get the shot up.

Active players comenting/analysing other active players from other teams has become a normallity in today's NBA and I can't get used to it.

There was a moment at Toronto (or maybe Atlanta) where Vassell had an incredible going out of bounds gather and behind the back pass to Wemby for the score and the look of pure joy and surprise on Wemby's face was a highlight I remember fondly
I was at the arena for the blocks on Chet and Giannis. It’s been years since I’ve heard the SA crowd get up and roar.

Those are great and theres so much more, but that Denver comeback stands out alongside the alley oop from Dev that was like from the FT line
He made Gordon his bitch in the second half after he walked through him and stood over him on that first half dead ball inbounds play in an effort to intimidate him. It just pissed him off.

Block on Giannis was my favorite
The Giannis block, the block to get a triple dub w/ blocks on that short dude, the logo 3, the Denver win late just overall, two back to back games which were basically 5x5 lolll.. the Denver gamewhich changed the entire course of the post-season

Spurs surrounding him with better talent will pretty much guarantee that his efficiency goes up tbh…even if he doesn’t improve much in terms of his own skill set.
Limiting TOs is another big area of improvement. I’m confident he’ll take a step forward in that department though. Expecting him to be much more comfortable and play at his own pace in year 2 as opposed to rushing things like he did as a rookie.

Absolutely agree about TOs, but I’m not sure if that will be a point of emphasis yet or not.
I wonder when coaching might try to rein that in.
He’s only 20, so there is likely a lot of upside in letting him continue to experiment and expand his skill set, even if it means the turnover problems continue.
We are so lucky to have him and get to watch him develop!

Reason why, besides next year's better draft, spurs probalby preferred the corpse of CP3 than Dillingham running the show next year, with Castle as a more surefire contributor too and Tre as a guarantee. Had to add proven talent to that team rather than more uncertain one.

Good timing with the Olympics this summer and LNB Playoffs last summer to keep Wemby engaged. It helps him develop experience with the pressures of championship level competition and deep tournament play.
If Paris gets him a medal this summer it's also a good distraction to the delay while Spurs are still building a contender.

Canada got bronze and the US didn’t medal in the World Cup, where the gold and silver teams had barely any NBA players, let alone stars. The times are changing.

As always, it depends on what team USA fields. That's the #1 question entering every international competition.
USA will keep having the deepest pool of top level players for the foreseeable future.

I see at least 3 All NBA players in Brunson, Halliburton, and Ant, plus a couple of All Stars. The teams that medaled had barely any NBA players at all. They’re just a team, and they play a better brand of ball, with a lot of motion and ball reversal.

I still think Wemby can play next to ANY good players, including true centers, and his passing with Gobert has only added to that belief.
Everyone here is convinced that Wemby is somehow so limited that he can’t share the floor with a true 5. I say that basing Wemby’s compatibility with other bigs on a year with the corpse of Collins and the knees of Bassey doesn’t really say much.
I still think Clingan was BPA at the 4th pick and would have immediately contributed to this team.

It's not about Wemby being limited, it's about his frontcourt partners being limited.
Wemby and Gobert together look great in FIBA, but in the NBA it would just make the job easier for the defense.
Non-shooting bigs aren't a positive on offense in the NBA unless they're elite post scorers, but you don't want second/third option post-scorers.
With four shooters around Wemby, defense is in an impossible situation.
That's why we want Markkanen. He's one of the best shooters in the league at 7ft.
The only two other elite shooting bigs are KAT and KP. One has a massive contract and the other one is always injured, leaving us with just Markkanen.

Of course Wemby can play alongside another center, he's just way too talented. You will never get the most out of him playing him that way though. The absolute best version of Wemby will always come with him being able to roam freely through the middle with 4 floor spacers next to him.

Generally, they never load. To read them, quote the post (by Ace3g), and you will see the tweet tag, with the address inside. If whomever it is is smart, they will have included the full address, like so:
https://x.com/Nike/status/1820770106789503214
which you can then follow back to the tweet. If the person is an idiot, they just include the 19 digit number on the end (1820770106789503214), and you can't follow it back, because you need the
X account (Nike in this case) as well as the big number...

I only know two people in France who reduce everything to their own little being: TP and Macron.
We're talking about the national team: TP talks about his own experience, and about his jersey being retired. We talk about Wemby: TP talks about his “academy” and the jersey Wemby wore when he was young.
Surprising to see how these two characters (Macron & TP) have the same (self-centered) way of seeing things. And glad to see Victor is the opposite of that (for now).

Less douchey than all the crap the US team does, the sleep thing, etc.
I don’t believe French always translates well into English. To me, the language isn’t as nuanced, and comes across as more blunt or douchey.
Victor isn’t Tim or David, and has always spoken out more and put himself on the line. To expect him to act like them isn’t rational, because he isn’t them. He’s spoken out pretty much since DAY ONE.

It all depends on which is your first language. But, in general, there's data that supports that English is one of quickest languages to learn. Global exposure probably plays a huge role in this, but English also has less grammatical conjugations than most languages, specially Latin derived ones (which French is a part of).
The difficult part about English is that letters and sounds don't have a direct correlation, which, for the life of me, I will never understand why that is the case :lol. That's why is more difficult for English speaking folks to get a name pronunciation right when reading it for the first time.
