The Times’ Attempt to Create a Bernie–Russia Scandal Is an Embarrassment
https://compote.slate.com/images/45d35c67-453e-450a-86f2-a80d619999ff.png?width=780&height=520&rect=520x347&offset=368x302
Crazy! Bernie Sanders, as mayor of Burlington, Vermont, tried to betray the United States! Wow! Really?
"Nothing in the documents suggests that Mr. Sanders was the only local American official targeted for propaganda,
or even that he was particularly receptive to it,"
And what year was this taking place?
At the time of Mr. Sanders’s announcement in 1987 that Burlington would seek a Soviet sister city,
several dozen other American cities already had such a relationship (https://sistercities.org/2013/08/20/spotlight-u-s-russia-sister-cities/) or had applied for one.
1987! Well into the period of U.S.–U.S.S.R détente initiated by … ah … let’s see here … Republican president Ronald Reagan?
And what was Sanders’ “antiwar agenda,” anyway?
Mr. Sanders reached out to the Soviet Union via an organization based in Virginia,
requesting a sister-city partnership with the Cold War adversary in
an effort to end the threat of nuclear annihilation.
Bernie Sanders was against nuclear annihilation? Quite a scandal we have on our hands
there’s nothing in the piece suggesting Sanders was treated any differently than anyone else in the U.S. who participated—
to spread the idea that Gorbachev also wanted to reduce the threat of nuclear war.
https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/03/new-york-times-finds-scandal-in-bernie-sanders-cooperation-with-ronald-reagans-soviet-peace-plan.html (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/03/new-york-times-finds-scandal-in-bernie-sanders-cooperation-with-ronald-reagans-soviet-peace-plan.html)
NYTimes headline is really the slanderous hit job, with NO evidence in the article.
From the Slate article:
" Donald Trump, was privately pursuing a real-estate project in Moscow during the 2016 campaign cycle while publicly speaking in flattering terms about Russian president Vladimir Putin.
His top advisers attended a meeting that was pitched to them as an expression of the Russian government’s support for the campaign, and
he benefited from the Russian hack and release of Democratic emails
while advocating for Russia-friendly policy positions on NATO and Ukraine.
His campaign manager shared internal data with a Soviet-born business partner
who was later described by the Department of Justice as having active ties to Russian intelligence, and
his national security adviser resigned after lying to the FBI about efforts to deescalate tensions with Russia over sanctions during the presidential transition.
Eventually Trump was impeached in part for pressuring Ukraine’s new president to announce an investigation into whether Ukraine had framed Russia for the hack of the Democratic emails."
And Trash called 17 US agencies LIARS by disbelieving them about Pootin's interference and by believing Pootin's denial.
But NYTimes slanders Bernie as a traitorous Russian agent?

Her campaign tanked after she hired several former Hillary staffers after they convinced her to ditch a progressive platform in favor of the gender identity bullshit that Hillary tried 4 years ago, so whether or not she’s a better candidate is a moot point. She brought herself down to Hillary’s level the way she campaigned.

one thing i keep reading that makes no sense to me is that she was supposedly more scrutinized than sanders for their medicare for all proposals. i dont understand this at all.
a lot of that was reporters asking her if taxes would go up, and she would just come back with "cost won't go up" without addressing taxes. and then when they'd press saying "yes, but will taxes go up" she would brush off those questions as republican talking points.
whereas sanders would respond to those same questions saying yes, taxes will go up, but it will overall reduce cost because of premium/co-pay/out of pocket, etc. she was getting heat for that lack of transparency. when she ultimately released her plan, it consisted entirely of more taxes on the wealthy and more taxes on employers, which many saw as less realistic than sanders' proposal to increase taxes across the board on everybody earning over 29k.
these were things i was bringing up here back in november/december all while still supporting her over sanders. now there's revisionist history about her getting unfairly attacked about her m4a plan while bernie supposedly skated free
but even then, in those early months she was clearly above sanders in the polls because progressives saw her as a more electable version of bernie who wouldn't scare establishment types nearly as much. her fall in the polls really coincided with when she announced her plan to get a public option done, and then later come back and try to get m4a. it may actually be a more pragmatic approach/compromise, but the primary race isn't the time to be making those compromises. it was around that time bernie started to surge as the candidate of choice for progressives.

On one hand, it might seem unfortunate that a strong potential president might've had her campaign tanked by some bad advice. On the other, most of what a president does is based off advisors and experts giving them options and recommendations. Warren choosing shitty advisors on the trail doesn't instill confidence in how she'd do if she somehow gets to the Oval Office (mainly through being the VP from one of the geezer frontrunners and having them die on her).

Yeah agreed, definitely not making excuses for Warren. She was well on her way to being the unifying candidate and decided she was going to replicate the campaign strategy of Kristen Gillibrand because advisors from multiple failed campaigns (Kamala/Gillibrand/Hillary) all told her to.

Honestly does it have more to do with ex Hillary/Kalama advisors or that she came off as a wannabe moderate lite and people saw through that? I only say this because the strategy clearly worked for Hillary in 2016 in terms of winning the primary season and is working for Biden with even less competent people running that campaign.
Warren always tries to be something she's not. She's not a moderate so her trying to shift so many of her original positions to please a certain electorate never made sense.

I don’t think her thing about a public option is what hurt her (imo there’s really nothing controversial about saying she’d settle for a public option if it was that vs. getting nothing). She handled the questions about taxes horribly so maybe that hurt her but the gender bullshit is what made her just another Klobuchar/Gillibrand imo.
Just look at what happened once she start going after Bloomer - it was way to little to late but she reminded everyone of the senator who used to grill bankers until they felt uncomfortable and got a surge in polling/fundraising after. Prior to that everyone had forgotten about the economic populist version of Warren that made her well liked.

Because Trump is an incredibly weak candidate, tbh. Makes complete sense. They already know he won't win the popular vote, which makes winning the EC all that much harder.
He can't go back to the Rust Belt and promise them to bring back manufacturing anymore. Didn't happen in 4 years, with tariffs and all, and won't be happening in the future either. He needs some of those States.
Also if you’re Trump you have to be careful not to over do it. Joe is definitely on the decline mentally but I don’t think calling him senile every ten seconds will do much. These are the same people who made the word socialist pretty much meaningless to my generation.

I think its because the die hard Biden followers are just clinging to hope that he will be their savior like Obama was since he was his VP. And it doesn't help matters for Bernie any that Biden keeps clinging to Obama the same way Hillary did. The hope I hold for Bernie is that hopefully Warren will come out and endorse him.

We all know the die hards on both sides on going to vote for their guy no matter what their mental status is. It's the Independents who have to decide which one they think is less detrimental to the good of the country. A senile guy who can't remember nothing, or a mentally unsound guy. Two great choices.

Biden has followers?
He's running on a "I'm the only one who can beat Trump" message.
The Obama clinging is par for the course. He was his VP afterall.
I would also suggest that Bernie is not a so great choice either. Biden was able to eat into one of Bernie's key group in the 30-44 and 45-65 adult whites without even moving a finger. That's nuts.

More than that, imo. Not getting traction with the black electorate but also losing support of his own within whites. And to add insult to injury the support he's always bragging about doesn't even go out to vote for the guy.

Biden, not Sanders, gains in popularity after Warren drops out: Reuters/Ipsos poll
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Elizabeth Warren’s departure from the Democratic presidential race appears to have benefited front-runner Joe Biden more than Bernie Sanders, her liberal ally on many issues, according to a Reuters/Ipsos national opinion poll released on Monday.
The poll conducted from Friday to Monday showed that 47% of registered Democrats and independents said they would vote for Biden if their state’s nominating contests were held today, up 7 points from a similar poll that ran just before Warren suspended her campaign last Thursday.
Thirty percent said they would vote for Sanders, a senator from Vermont, unchanged from the previous poll.
The results suggested that Warren’s supporters, rather than gravitating toward Sanders, have fallen in line with Biden, who shifted the dynamics of the race with a commanding victory in the South Carolina primary, followed by wins in most of the Super Tuesday nominating contests last week.
Six more states, including Michigan and Washington, hold nominating contests on Tuesday.
Warren, a senator from Massachusetts, has not endorsed a candidate. More moderate former rivals, including Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Michael Bloomberg and Kamala Harris, have rallied behind Biden, the former vice president.
The poll also found that about six in 10 Sanders supporters said they would vote for Biden if he ended up winning the party’s nomination to take on Republican President Donald Trump in the Nov. 3 election. Three in 10 said they either would not vote, vote for a third-party candidate or did not yet know what they would do.
One in 10 Sanders supporters would vote for Trump if Biden is nominated. That is similar to the proportion of Sanders supporters who political scientists believe voted for Trump in 2016, although academics disagree over how much of an impact that had on Trump’s upset victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 1,114 American adults, including 541 who identified as registered Democrats or independents. It had a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of 5 percentage points.

If I lived in a swing state I’d definitely be voting for Biden in the general).

Only reason I’d vote for Trump is if I thought we’d be able to hit a recession under his watch and in time for 2022 midterms. Americans are so fucking stupid in that they blame a recession on whoever is president at the time and they give credit for a good economy to whoever is president at the time so Trump having a recession on his hands would be good news for the Dems long term.
in a nutshell, Economic recession + Trump 2nd term = the Dems murdering the 2022 midterms and taking back the senate to block any conservative SCOTUS picks.

The Repugs refused to help Obama reflate the economy after the Banksters Great Depression, and did everything they could to keep the economy weak, prolong the pain for Labor (after the Fed bailed out Capital), for Moscow Mitch's priority of "make Obama a one-term President"

Dems could possibly murder like crazy in 2022 and 2024 if Trump wins and there is a recession. Maybe even get 60+ Senate seats in 2024. Staying home is stupid even if you leave the top of the ballot blank as there is a lot of times a lot of cool other stuff on the ballot. Like 2018 here in FL we had felon voting, this year we have $15 minimum wage, and 2016 we had medical marijuana iirc. I'm voting for $15 for sure but I hope it don't hurt small businesses

Fair point but keep in mind i live in DC, a place that has a larger population than both Dakotas but doesn’t get senators because it’s not a “state” :lol, so no down ballot elections but I’ll see what the initiatives are.
Problem with 2024 is that the Dems have a lot of vulnerable seats and only a few seats they could theoretically take (the one silver lining to Hillary losing is that we avoided the Dems getting their clocks cleaned in the 2018 senate elections...Republicans would probably have a super majority in the senate right now if Hillary was president). 2022 is year when Dems really need to pick up 5+ senate seats.

The “Basic 6” steps for communicating with someone with dementia. The steps they describe provide an excellent framework to use on your visits as you approach and converse with someone with Alzheimer’s or other dementia, and are especially relevant during the middle stages of the disease.
Approach from the front – do not startle them.
Establish eye contact – this shows interest in them.
Call the person by name – again, showing interest in them.
Get down to eye level if needed – this puts you on the same level with them.
Let them initiate touch – they will come to you when ready.
Give directions one step at a time – this helps keep it simple, especially for those having difficulty with processing.

For them, maybe their mother was there this morning, even though you know she passed away twenty-five years ago. Sometimes, people with Alzheimer’s disease lash out for no clear reason. They may get upset or angry easily. They may curse, hurl insults, or scream. They might even throw things or resist caregivers by pushing and hitting. This kind of aggression usually starts when people get to the later stages of the disease.

i suppose it's a matter of perspective. i mean, in the context of our political system, biden is about as left as most democrats. but i'd say at least on economic policy, our overton window is pretty far to the right
obama was called a socialist and far left and what did he do, extend the bush tax cuts but raise the highest marginal tax rate by about 3%

What about Biden’s view on taxes and healthcare makes it a decidedly lefty position? Biden’s views on healthcare are significantly further to the right than the rest of the modern world.
This is exactly SR21’s point. The overton window on economic issues is so far to the right in this country that anyone who doesn’t fervently believe in trickle down economics is considered a communist.

Right which proves the point, the fact you think Biden is a hardline lefty merely because today’s Republican Party disagrees with him.
Who has the outlandish/extreme view here, Biden for wanting to make sure people who live in the richest country in the world are guaranteed healthcare, or Republicans for wanting America to be a country where people who can’t aftord healthcare die on the streets?
