Bloomberg might end up doing as well as Steyer in the end when the people actually vote. Almost every poll done in SC had him at or around 15-17% and he under perform them mightily.

I still can't understand how this guy is drawing any traction at all with any Dem voter. His commercials seem so scripted and fake its ridiculous. His latest commercial he has all these women talking about how great a guy he is.

Bloomer announced that even if he does shitty on Super Tuesday he’s going to stay in the race which is good news for Sanders but it’s still dumb. The DNC should be pushing Warren and Bloomer to drop out ASAP. A straight up race between Sanders and Biden is the best way to avoid a brokered convention or controversy around who deserves to be nominee.

I know plenty of other BernieBros will still act butthurt but in a scenario where Sanders has a delegate lead over Biden after Super Tuesday but Biden still ends up with more delegates in a H2H race against Sanders after all the primaries are over it means Biden won fair and square w/o any super delegate help/momentum.

That's really dumb if true. I wonder if he's just saying that because to say otherwise might cost him some votes on ST.

I was bullish on Bloomberg's chances a couple of months ago, he was definitely taking the right approach focusing on states with a lot of delegates. But his marketing people were careless about outreach, the paying for influencer thing (which everyone does) was a bad look publicly, and the debate was poison. From talking to people on the inside, his biggest issue is he's surrounded by yes-men who don't challenge his worst instincts. Another unfortunate similarity to the current POTUS.

Wonder if they have been doing internal polling showing them losing Minnesota. The polls do show her winning there but those polls are fairly old.

I think it’s less to do with the DNC and more to do with the fundraisers cutting off these 1 percenters and flocking to Biden now.

Even if she stayed in and lost a close race it probably costs Sanders at least 20 delegates.

The real curious case at this point is Warren. She might be the hatchet woman the DNC is using to take Sanders votes.

Even though he said he’s staying in race no matter what I think Bloomer drops out this week and starts throwing money towards Biden.

I dont get this move. Specially when it comes to Warren.

In the highly unlikely case there is a brokered convention, does she think the DNC heads will pick her? I dont know if it's a naive thing or if she just loves to look like a beggar but either way, not a good look for her.

She’s trying to justify staying in the race with a bullshit reason even though we all know she’s actually staying in the race to siphon votes from Sanders (likely in exchange for something the DNC is promising her).

i keep saying it, her campaign has been frustrating and disappointing. she has no political savvy tbh (DNA test was a red flag that was discussed here, as well)... and coming in she had the best chance of "uniting the party" between the progressive wing and the establishment while actually being in "ideas" person and not a platitude machine like beto/pete or a demagogue like kamala.

The big thing the DNC is forgetting if they’re trying to screw Sanders at all costs is how gaff prone Biden is going to get as the race is more intense and as he’ll have to spend more time talking during debates. Even his staunchest supporters have to admit they see an old man who’s cognitive ability is deteriorating and gets progressively more incoherent during debates because he’s used to being in bed at those times.

I don't know why we'd assume Warren is siphoning many more votes from Bernie than she is from Biden. Warren seems like the pick for people who want a progressive executive but can't go all the way to "socialism."

This poll is a few months old, but it shows that while Warren-as-top-choice voters had Bernie at a plurality (30%) as their second choice, a combined 38% said their second choice was either Biden, Buttigieg or Bloomberg. With Buttigieg out and Bloomberg likely to follow, it stands to reason most of those votes would go to Biden instead of Sanders.

So if the numbers hold at all, it looks like it would be a pretty even split, if not advantageous for Biden for Warren to drop out.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/voters-second-choice-candidates-show-a-race-that-is-still-fluid/

Warren is also a pretty popular "2nd choice" candidate right now so she may be waiting to see how many votes she picks up from the ones who dropped out.

She's in the same position Bloomer is in, I think it's fair for her to stay in the race through tomorrow but if she struggles to get to 15% of the vote then it makes absolutely no sense for her to continue. The BernieBros saying she's in the same boat as Buttplug/Elena and should be dropping out today are going overboard imo, especially when there's a chance she gets a lot of Elena's "I'm a woman hear me ROAR!!!" vote and a lot of Buttplug's educated white vote.

I think they're getting way too careless in assuming all the Elena/Buttplug votes go to Biden. They both had a predominantly white base of supporters (albeit moderate whites) who weren't big fans of Biden in the first place (thus they were looking for a moderate alternative). If I had to guess them dropping out helps Warren more than anyone else - especially since Warren can now consolidate the "WE NEED WOMENZ!!!" vote.

Had this being a little earlier than I can see and concede your point but we're heading into Super Tuesday and she's got 8 delegates. At this point people should be realizing the reality. 2 person race, 3 at most.

Warren is also polling terribly low so whatever leftovers she gets will probably be minimal. Say Buttiegieg and Elena's voters split betwen Biden and Warren, we're talking about maybe 2-3% points which would put her nowhere near the point of contention.

they made the same mistake of having an overly-crowded field allowing the populist to ramp up his support while the party quabbled with itself. they ended up being stuck with cruz (who republicans hated too) and kasich (who never had a snowballs chance) as trump's opposition down the stretch. on the other hand, biden is generally liked (much more than cruz, anyway)... but bloomberg, at least in the polls, is a much bigger wildcard than kasich ever was

if trump wins it means they can try to run one of their own people again as soon as 2024. if sanders wins, that delays it to 2028
If Trump wins re-election against Biden after another coordinated effort by the DNC to stop Sanders (this one potentially even more blatant than the 2016 effort was) the Democrat party as we know it is going to crater. There’s no way of knowing who they’ll be able to run in 2024 under that scenario.

They would have lost to Hillary Clinton. I know you’re genuine in your disdain for Trump unlike other Republicans on this site but it’s not a coincidence they won the election after being the party that let its primary voters pick the candidate without any establishment intervention.

Speaking of Hillary...

A federal judge Monday granted a request from conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch to have former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sit for a sworn deposition to answer questions about her use of a private email server to conduct government business.

Clinton has argued that she has already answered questions about this and should not have to do so again, but D.C. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth said in his ruling that her past responses left much to be desired.

"As extensive as the existing record is, it does not sufficiently explain Secretary Clinton’s state of mind when she decided it would be an acceptable practice to set up and use a private server to conduct State Department business," Lamberth said.

The judge went on to recognize that while Clinton responded to written questions in a separate case, "those responses were either incomplete, unhelpful, or cursory at best.

Simply put her responses left many more questions than answers.” Lamberth said that using written questions this time “will only muddle any understanding of Secretary Clinton’s state of mind and fail to capture the full picture, this delaying the final disposition of this case even further.”

The ruling comes after Judicial Watch revealed at a December 2019 status conference that the FBI released "approximately thirty previously undisclosed Clinton emails," and that the State Department "failed to fully explain" where they came from.

The State Department has been pushing for the discovery phase of the case to come to a close, but Lamberth said he is not ready to do so, saying that "there is still more to learn."

"Canonical theories predict that moderate candidates perform better in general elections." That line?

Is it not the commonplace assumption that moderates perform better? If so, that'd seem to line up with canonical theory.

It’s a peanut log of an assumption the DNC/MSM squeezes out of its face anus on a regular basis such that it’s become commonplace despite it being proven wrong every 4 years.

Do you agree that beginning in 1980 and in every presidential election thereafter the more moderate candidate lost?

But it's not an assumption. The paper is describing what canon teaches, and is accurate. The rest of that paragraph reads:

Canonical theories predict that moderate candidates will typically perform better than lessmoderate candidates in general elections (e.g., Downs 1957). Empirical research has generallysupported this prediction (e.g., Canes-Wrone, Brady and Cogan 2002; Hall 2015). For example,Canes-Wrone, Brady and Cogan (2002, p. 133) find that Members of Congress who cast 3 to 4additional high-profile votes aligned with the extreme of their party receive 1 to 3 percentagepoints (pp) fewer votes in the next election. Abramowitz likewise finds that Democratic USHouse candidates who supported Medicare For All in 2018 received approximately 2.2pp fewervotes than their peers in similar districts who did not.1However, whether moderate nominees areusually ‘more electable’ is far from settled, and reasonable skepticism remains (e.g., Cohen et al.2016; Achen and Bartels 2016).

Criticizing Bernie =|= supporting a moderate. It's possible that Bernie is an atrocious candidate and the moderate (Biden or Bloomberg) is also an awful choice. The point of the article is to test the notion that Bernie, as an extreme figure, is likely less electable than (what you'd say is an already unelectable) moderate. The two points are not mutually exclusive.

Just because moderates don't do well (a point that I'm not entirely sure on since the paper references some research showing the opposite: that they do well) is not support for Bernie. Bernie has his own host of problems, vulnerabilities, and other issues that, in my mind, make him unelectable. Again, that doesn't mean "therefore vote moderate." You're setting up a false choice here.

I'm not seeing that. This is what I see:

Data

As part of surveys for other projects, we collected 40,153 unique survey responses during January– February 2020. In these surveys, we asked respondents how they would choose in a contest between Donald Trump and one of the Democratic nominees. We asked about the five leading Democratic contenders as of January 2020: Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden,Michael Bloomberg, and Pete Buttigieg. We asked each respondent about only one randomly selected Democratic candidate in order to limit strategic responding, resulting in approximately8,000 observations per candidate. This large sample size allows us to detect shifts in candidatechoices across Democratic candidates that, while small in absolute terms, could be enormously electorally consequential. We conducted this survey using the online platform Lucid, which Coppock and McClellan(2019) validate as relatively nationally representative. We strongly caution against drawing firm conclusions about the absolute value of Trump’s likely popular vote margin over Democrats’ from this one online survey conducted early in the election season. However, the large size of its sample does allow us to make unusually precise comparisons between the Democratic candidates, especially as compared to typical national polls with under 1,000 responses. In the survey, after other content for other studies, we first gave respondents a brief preamble about the upcoming election and asked how they would vote in a contest between RepublicanDonald Trump and a randomly selected one of the five leading Democratic candidates. If respondents said they were unsure or preferred a third party, we asked them if they leaned towards Trump, leaned towards the Democrat, or were completely undecided. During the second half ofour field period, we added a “would not vote” option. We also conducted an experiment that allows us to check whether our findings would differ ifrespondents were shown attacks against the Democratic candidates. This allows us to investigatewhether our answers might change were respondents more fully informed or exposed to thegeneral election campaign. For respondents in an “Attacks Shown” condition, we showed somerespondents attacks against the Democratic candidates before they selected between Trump andthe Democratic candidates.3In the first half of the field period, we randomly sampled two ofseveral attacks for each Democratic candidate; in the second half, we showed the three mosteffective attacks on each candidate as judged by the first half of the data. Respondents in a controlcondition saw no attacks. In our main analyses we pool across these conditions; later on, we showour results are similar across the conditions

Right, a bunch of hypothetical polling (those polls worked wonders for Hillary) with no emphasis being given to how past presidential elections actually worked. Even though they provided the “would not vote option” that doesn’t solve for the huge swing in voter turnout election by election. Your average American participating in a poll study isnt going to admit there’s a scenario where they wouldn’t vote at all.

On a case by case basis sure. Arizona for example is atypical and has a lot of “purple” voters, particularly educated suburban white women who are fiscally conservative but more liberal on social issues, so Kristen Sinema is the ideal senate candidate in AZ.

Other purple states have a lot of solid blue voters and around the same amount in solid red voters so it comes more down to who has better turnout. I’d put Ohio in this category.

For starters, midterm elections (2018) are a lot different than general election (you could run on the platform of student loan forgiveness + 6 figure salaries for part time jobs, and you’d still be lucky to get much in terms of millennial turnout.

So if the issue is turnout, the point is a) yes b) Bernie needs 6% greater youth turnout (18-29) than Obama got in 2008. The basis for that conclusion is some number crunching from questions on how Bernie does vis-a-vis Trump:

The Reason Sanders Appears Equally Electable

Two important patterns lurk beneath the headline finding that Sanders appears equally electable as the leading more moderate Democrats.

First, Trump also wins more votes when against Sanders than he does when against a more moderate Democrat. In particular, Figure 2 shows that Trump also gets 0.9-1.5pp more votes in head-to-heads against Sanders (and Warren) than in head-to-heads against any of the moderate candidates. As can be seen when we examine where these differences come from by party in Figure 3, this is driven in part by Republicans being 1.8pp more likely to say they would vote for Trump if Sanders were the nominee; with one of the moderate candidates as a nominee, most of these Republican votes flow to the Democratic candidate.

Second, Sanders’ similar number of Democratic votes against Trump relative to the leading moderates is driven by him bringing respondents who otherwise say they have no preference, would vote for a third party candidate, or would not vote into the Democratic column. Figure 2 found that Democrats receive 1.0-3.4pp more votes in head-to-head questions with Sanders as the nominee than if one of the other Democrats is named. However, as we saw, this is not because Sanders wins votes from Trump. Instead, Figure 3 shows this advantage is a sum of two main dynamics: despite losing an additional 0.4% of Democrats, (an imprecisely estimated) 0.9% of Independents, and 1.8% of Republicans to Trump, Sanders converts approximately 3.7% of Democrats from answering “Neither/Would not vote” to saying they would turn out to vote for Democrats.

This offsetting dynamic appears key to understanding why Sanders appears relatively electable in our data:Sanders converts just enough Democrats and Independents from saying they are indifferent or would not vote to supporting Sanders to offset his losses of votes from the Democratic column to Trump’s column.4 These results also appear in battleground states, as shown in Figure A5. Sanders’ Equal Electability Case Requires Large Increases in Youth Turnout Investigating which demographics convert from being indifferent or not voting to voting for Democrats with Sanders in head-to-head questions can help inform the plausibility of the casethat Sanders is equally electable as the more moderate candidates. In Figure 4, we show that Sanders’ conversion of votes from the neither/would not vote4An explicit “would not vote” option was only present in half our data; Figure A4 shows that these results aremostly driven by changes between the “Democratic candidate” and “Would not vote” category. In Appendix D, we discuss how reducing third party voting alone does not explain how Sanders can offset increases in Trump voting.7

Email the authors and see, but from skimming the paper, it seems they were focused on how people changed certain answers based on who the respective 2020 candidates were and extrapolated from there. The focus is on how people's answers vis a vis the current candidates can be extrapolated to turnout. Take as much issue as you want with that, but I don't see how past presidential elections are all that relevant to turnout in the current climate with the current candidates.

It’s relevant because people participating in polling studies isn’t the same as people living in the real world on Election Day. If we were like the rest of the modern world and had holidays on Election Day it’d be different but it’s not. The single mother participating in the poll hasn’t accounted for what happens when she needs to pick her kid up from school but sees there’s a 2 hour line where she’s supposed to vote.

I’m discrediting his likeability because his mind is decaying and it’s only going to get worse as he gets deeper into a campaign schedule. Come time for him to debate Trump I think his brain is going to be a scrambled egg due to the sleep deprivation and hectic travel schedule a campaign entails. He forgot the most famous line in the Declaration of Independence today FFS.

I also think he’ll do worse among millennials than Clinton did and the BernieBros are going to be even more infuriated this time than they were 4 years ago. I’ll vote for him (I live in the bluest of blue places though so it doesn’t matter) but the Bros on Twitter will revolt.

Honestly, it makes sense though. In 2008, Huckabee stayed in the race to f*ck over Mitt. Romney would've had a much better shot at beating the non-incumbent in 2008 than the GBIII alternative. Some people in the DNC are telling people to get their sh** together.

Senility manifests in different ways.

Biden's senility comes off in it's most natural, obvious way. Forgetfulness, deer in headlights look, trips on his words, etc.

Trump's senility comes in his daily meltdowns that make you question whether he made the right decision or not. Also the nonsense rambling he goes on for hours at a time without making a single point.

It's possible for a 77 year old who's already losing it to go 9 months without losing very much incremental cognitive ability.....if said 77 YO was living the normal life of a retiree and getting 9-10 hours of sleep a day with very little travel and a lot of leisure time.

What mainstream Dems are clueless about is how much a hectic campaign schedule is going to wear him out. The differences between Biden when his campaign started to Biden now are already pretty stark in terms of cognitive ability. By the time you get to the 2nd half of a debate he can only get 2-3 clean sentences out before he sounds incoherent (and those 2-3 sentences are usually nothing beyond "I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO'S DONE _______! I DID IT WHEN I WAS VICE PRESIDENT FOR OBAMA!!" and that's with 6-7 other candidates where he can go long periods without speaking. Imagine how quickly he'll get worn out in a debate with only 1-2 other people.

You could say all of this applies to Bernie and while he looks like complete shit physically his mind hasn't fallen apart yet. He seems to get energized by the adversarial process the way Trump does.

This is the problem. Sure, in a primary where the DNC is stacking the deck in his favor, you can simply give him "medicine" to control his gaffs and it'll be enough to put him over the top.

Going up against Trump where he's on an even playing field and doesn't have the people administering the election trying to help him win will require more than "controlling his episodes". He's actually going to need to speak coherently and give people a reason to vote for him.

No it wouldn't, VP almost never matters. If there was ever a VP that was going to carry a presidential candidate it would have been Lloyd Bentsen in 1988, but Dukakis still got destroyed in a landslide despite Bush having a retard in Dan Quayle as his VP. The only election I have ever seen the VP mean anything was when Paul Ryan torpedoed Romney's campaign by running on killing off Medicare for everyone but the boomers.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I also dont think Bernie is so vindictive that he would out right refuse such an offer. That's being shortsighted.
its not about being vindictive, its about being tied to the hip of an administration he doesn't believe in. VP should be in lock-step with the President, and the VP has to help get the president's agenda through congress. why the fuck would bernie want to do that for clinton?

Id be really surprised if Warren stays in the race just to fuck with Bernie and help Biden only for Biden to pick someone other than her. She’s committing political suicide with what used to be her base, so you’d expect her to get something good out of it.

She looks like a middle school principal. Maybe give her the department of education

I used to think that but remember how hard she was pushing to be Hillary’s VP 4 years ago? She clearly wanted it then and was disappointed to be passed over.

Seriously tho, after Biden gets curb stomped by Trump, what’s the centrist excuse going to be? Will it be similar to “he just ran into a buzzsaw” like the excuses made for Kerry in 2004, or will it be of the “he just wasn’t a very likeable candidate” Hillary Clinton variety?

The latter wouldn’t necessarily be inaccurate, tbh

Also, you people gotta be honest here. There was plenty of criticism towards Denison when he was elected because the GOP put an incompetent person (putting it mildly) in charge. But now some of the same people want to put a senile, incoherent guy in charge? You know he won’t be in command of anything if he makes it. He can barely do a coherent speech right now.
