after the last republican - gw bush - destroyed our economy with wars and halliburton profits-
obama had to make a choice and a tough one;
get the country out of that hole - so he threw a few crumbs to poor people and those 8k checks to first time homeowners were really helpful- as those people were able to buy their first house and spent the 8k at home depot and on contractors and put that 8k back into the struggling economy and brought back our economy-
however- obama - as part of that choice-
had to also bail out the criminal corporate wall street bankers - and they got off completely scott free and took the biggest chunk of that handout
bernie is just saying- “now it is time for poor and middle class to get that handout - and those wall street criminals are going to pay for it with a tax”
fair is fair
go ask wall street to give back what you lost 12 years ago and stop bitching at the poor and middle class for trying to get a piece of the pie for once

biden's polling numbers have been holding up leading to the SC primary.
SC has 54 pledged delegates... good opportunity to gain ground. right now biden is 30 delegates behind sanders, and only 10 behind pete. while the actual delegate count at this stage, mathematically, doesn't mean much in a race with over 3900 delegates to be had, the narrative/momentum would be big just days before super tuesday
biden isn't leading in many super tuesday polls, but he's within margin of error in some big states like texas and north carolina

its funny how much perspective shapes things...
right now, increasing taxes on the rich to provide healthcare for all is seen as an attack on the rich
if we started from a more humane system where everybody had healthcare, and taxes on the rich were a few points higher... and then some candidate said "we need to take away healthcare coverage, open up a private market, and cut taxes on the rich", it would be perceived as an attack on everybody else

When it comes to money, millennials do have some of the highest student loan debt rates of any generation in history. The average millennial has $30,000 in student loans.

and our Dear Leader Trump has an ironclad plan to fix health care cost inflation, I'm sure. He just hasn't told us yet what that is after 3 years. It's sooper seekrit.
In 2016, healthcare spending reached $3.3 trillion, about 18 percent of GDP. The sector is also the biggest employer in the country with about 11 percent of the workforce, or 16 million people, but the economic benefits that come along with that output also have a “high price tag,” according to Moody’s.
Costs are anticipated to keep rising about 5.5 percent annually on average over the next decade as the U.S. population ages, CMS estimates, posing “a challenge for the U.S. government, households and businesses,” the analysis reads. Despite this, the U.S. isn’t faring any better when it comes to key measures of population health, such as life expectancy and infant mortality rates.
The magical free market will solve this all by itself to make everybody better off, amiright?

yes, that's what his plan says
https://berniesanders.com/issues/medicare-for-all/
Key Points
Create a Medicare for All, single-payer, national health insurance program to provide everyone in America with comprehensive health care coverage, free at the point of service.
No networks, no premiums, no deductibles, no copays, no surprise bills.
Medicare coverage will be expanded and improved to include: include dental, hearing, vision, and home- and community-based long-term care, in-patient and out-patient services, mental health and substance abuse treatment, reproductive and maternity care, prescription drugs, and more.
Stop the pharmaceutical industry from ripping off the American people by making sure that no one in America pays over $200 a year for the medicine they need by capping what Americans pay for prescription drugs under Medicare for All.

Now:
How much wealthier would you be without having had that debt to start with?
and:
The 90's were a good time to be able to pay off debt, with a better economy. Wages, relative to the cost of say, healthcare, were much better and the economy was growing a lot faster than it is now. That fact that you point this out, as if your circumstances mirror that of a 20 year old today, proves my point.

I had to explain this to my 75 year old father who said "why are these kids taking out all this debt, why don't they just get summer jobs to pay for it, like I did"
I looked up the cost for the state college in missouri, then figured out how many hours you would have to work at $10 per hour for 12 weeks to earn enough to go to a year.
Hours required:
176 per week.
Hours in one week:
168.
Pay rate required to earn enough to attend college in 12 weeks at full time:
$42.74
I then asked him what sane person would bother going to college if they were already earning $42/hr.
Hardest thing for people as they get older is to realize that the world changes.

There aren't a lot of 4 year degrees that will net you a 40 dollars an hour job in the 1st place. You'd be better to go the technical school route if that's your goal, and pay a small fraction of the cost at the expense of not having a Greek fraternity symbol tattooed on your hip.
that some people endured struggles in the past doesn't justify ignoring those issues going forward
It's not that simple of course.
Ignoring issues? No. Ignoring people with unrealistic ideals about how to deal with them? Sure.

Boomers are aging out of the trades in record numbers. Getting into a trade at 18, and starting to earn a paycheck right away, with full pay in about 3 years makes a lot of sense financially.

Three was what the head of the local union said. Seen 3 and 4 online. Even so, earning a solid paycheck for that period of time, puts the option ahead of a lot of college degrees that require masters+ to be profitable on a net present value basis.
Those three or four years of income at the beginning of a working life make a pretty big difference when comparing outcomes over the long term.

but after getting out of medical school, they are doing at least 3 years of residency, where the average pay is about 60k per year. and those 3 years are a bare minimum. those who want to specialize do more. on the high end, for example, neurosurgeons do 7 years of residency. so including undergrad, medical school, and residency, you're looking at 15 years of accruing debt/interest before you're able to make enough money to begin hacking away at it around the same time of your life that you'd already have had kids and are spending a lot of money on child care
beyond the medical field, you have attorneys, engineers, mba's, science PhD's, etc among those who go to grad schools. and then you also have huge groups who just get undergrad degrees. and yes, admittedly, there are some wasteful degrees in the humanities that dont have any practical benefit for work... and we do have an issue where too many jobs "require" college degrees that dont actually do shit to prepare you (some banks require loan officers to have a 4 year degree, for instance)
not everyone has the same projected income of a post-residency doctor.

Taking less of someone's money doesn't equal giving that person money. The math might look that way, but the fact is you're still taking from them, and probably lot more than you're taking from someone making 100K.
Rather than completely wipe student loans a much more realistic campaign platform would be for Sanders to wipe all accrued interest and eliminate interest payments.
What's the goal?
I'm all for easing up on student loan payments, but let's start by reimbursing folks who paid theirs off already then we can move to those who haven't. This country is starting to reek of reward for failure to comply with laws/rules/contracts. You cross illegally, you get healthcare and amnesty (some here would be for that). Those here legally endure the process. You fail to pay your loan, it's forgiven. Others are out tens of thousands because they paid as agreed.
I am for free colleges, I don't think we get there from the foundation we have built though without disenfranchising those who worked to build it. Debt forgiveness just passes on the debt to someone else, it doesn't really forgive anything. If the Bernie crowd is so attracted to his platform, they should put their money where their mouth is. Corporations would bend to the will of the consumer if the consumer could insist on things like college tuition reimbursement or debt forgiveness from large corporations. A grass roots movement to boycott products from companies that don't offer tuition assistance to employees, or who won't take part in a program for college tuition in general would put economic pressure where it would be effective. Look at all the grass fed beef, free range chickens, green this or that, so forth.. All this wasn't out of the goodness of the companies' hearts.
The people have the power to make this happen. They just won't. Instead they'll try to elect someone who has zero shot at doing it with this congress.

I already said the math looks that way but if I stole 20 dollars from you and returned 10, I cannot say I gave you 10 dollars. They start with X amount, you start with nothing. You take from them. Taking less from them doesn't equate to you giving them more. It equates to you taking less because you in fact gave them nothing since you had nothing to give.
Your logic is how congress proposes a 20% pay increase, settles on 10% and claims they took a 10% pay cut.

But if you owed me $20, it makes no difference if i relieve you of $10 of that debt or gift you $10

yeah, i dont see why somebody with a razor-thin plurality should be declared the winner when the rules call for a majority. if you have a 35-30-20-etc... its not a very strong argument that even the leader reflects the "will of the people"... you would only be able to figure that out if everybody used ranked choice voting (which they should).
but if the leader has 43% and the next person has 25% or something, it would be absurd to flip that over its head. youd have to assume that the lower vote-getter would be getting an 80-20 split of the remaining votes, which is absurd

I do think though that in the 25-30-20 scenario the party will need to tread lightly. If they have the mindset of “Oh well Bernie didn’t win in a complete landslide so it’s time to screw him and completely ditch his platform!” (which they seem to have) there might not be a full on revolt but a big chunk of Bernie voters will stay home. They need to have some kind of compromise in mind that’s better than 2016 (a bunch of meaningless platitudes from Hillary Clinton). I think what hurt Sanders the most is that the old system had superdelegates who pledged their support for a candidate go into the count as if they were regular pledge delegates. That made it to where candidates could start off with huge disadvantages if the establishment didn't like them going in. By pure numbers, Sanders lost. But it's not clear that he'd've lost some of those contests had Clinton not had the front-runner status helping her. According to this random article from CNN (https://www.cnn.com/2016/05/16/politics/democratic-superdelegate-math-sanders-clinton/index.html) in May 2016, Clinton held a nearly 500-point lead over Sanders in terms of superdelegates. That was more than 60 percent of her lead at the time, and it represented a nearly insurmountable advantage. It was clear at that point that she was gonna get elected no matter what Sanders did, so what was the point in even voting for him?
Wikipedia said this about the June contests:
On June 6, both the Associated Press and NBC News reported that Clinton had sufficient support from pledged and unpledged delegates to become the presumptive Democratic nominee.[123] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries#cite_ note-131) Clinton's campaign seemed reluctant to accept the mantle of "presumptive nominee" before all the voting was concluded,[124] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries#cite_ note-132) while Sanders' campaign stated it would continue to run and accused the media of a "rush to judgement."[125] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries#cite_ note-133) Six states held their primaries on June 7. Clinton won in California (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Democratic_primary,_2016), New Jersey (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_Democratic_primary,_2016), New Mexico (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mexico_Democratic_primary,_2016) and South Dakota (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Dakota_Democratic_primary,_2016). Sanders won Montana (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montana_Democratic_primary,_2016) and North Dakota (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Dakota_Democratic_caucuses,_2016), the latter being the only caucus contest held on that day.[126] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries#cite_ note-NYT_2016-06-07-134) Clinton finally declared victory on the evening of June 7, as the results ensured that she had won a majority of the pledged delegates and the popular vote.[126] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries#cite_ note-NYT_2016-06-07-134)

I'm not saying that Clinton would not have won without superdelegates, but I think them mattering and being able to commit early help reify the sense of inevitability that her campaign had been trying to instill in voters.

She would've probably lost IMO w/o superdelegate system. People like to say she won by 3 million votes or whatever; but the truth is that with the writing on the wall people stayed away while others just wanted to support the presumptive nominee as a show of solidarity. Over and over, Bernie would have better showings and Hillary's delegate count would get the headlines. It's a submission system. It did what it was designed to do.

Bernie won two of six states on the last main primary day and was very competitive in California even when Hillary was clearly going to be the nominee. This despite that people typicaly want to support the winner slash show support against the other party's nominee. And at one point, Bernie won eight straight states despite being way down thanks to super delegates. I wouldn't discount all the ballot box stuffing and technological engineering fake votes either. I frankly doubt that Hillary was ever more popular than Bernie (except in the very beginning). She was embroiled in so much scandal; it defies logic to think that.

What is this diatribe? How does someone who wins 11 more states than you “probably” loses the nomination?
Super delegates have nothing to do with how a candidate does on a primary. They don’t even have a say until the convention so how is it you think they helped Hillary win primaries?
Bernie winning however many states at the end doesn’t change the fact she outperformed him in every way.

Only eleven more despite full system backing and delegate momentum the entire time thanks to super delegates? You obviously don't know how the human psyche works. People vote for winners. People are tribal. If people voted on principle we wouldn't have a two-party system, numb nuts.

Before Bernie went on to win those states back to back, she had already accumulated an insurmountable pledged delegate lead. All the super delegates did was add to her huge lead anyways.
Not that it matters because Bernie himself gave her all his earned delegates at the convention. What are you even trying to argue here?

If You Really Think Trump Is Favored in 2020, You Haven’t Thought It Through
If it looks to you like Trump is cruising to victory in November, then either you want it too badly, or you’re too afraid of it to see clearly. Consider this argument:
Trump squeaked out his victory in the Electoral College by the smallest (https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/12/hillary-clinton-margin-loss-votes) of margins, despite losing the popular vote by a large amount. If he loses any voters from battleground states in 2020, he must make them up somewhere else, or he loses the election.
Trump was aided in 2016 by several highly unlikely events which will not be repeated in 2020 … suggesting he will lose voters compared to his first campaign.
Trump’s approval ratings have never been higher than when he was elected, suggesting he has lost people who voted for him the first time.
Democratic turnout will be higher in 2020 than it was in 2016.
Therefore Trump can’t make up the voters he has lost since 2016.
Therefore Trump will lose in 2020.
the Electoral College
Michigan: Trump is losing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statewide_opinion_polling_for_the_2020_United_Stat es_presidential_election#Michigan) to all of the top five Democratic candidates, generally by significant margins.
Florida: Trump loses to Biden, beats Bloomberg, runs neck-and-neck (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statewide_opinion_polling_for_the_2020_United_Stat es_presidential_election#Florida) with Sanders, Warren and Buttigieg.
Pennsylvania: Trump loses (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statewide_opinion_polling_for_the_2020_United_Stat es_presidential_election#Pennsylvania) to Biden and Sanders, and is maybe slightly behind Warren. For Buttigieg and Bloomberg, there aren’t enough polls.
Wisconsin: Trump loses (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statewide_opinion_polling_for_the_2020_United_Stat es_presidential_election#Wisconsin) to Biden and Sanders, beats Buttigieg, and appears to be even with Warren, or slightly behind. Not enough polls for Klobuchar and Bloomberg.
Arizona: Trump won in 2016 by 3.6%. His approval rating is underwater by 1% — a swing of 4.6% toward the Democrats.
Georgia: Trump won it by 5% in 2016, but his approval rating now is even.
Iowa: Trump won it by 9.4% in 2016, but now his approval rating is underwater by 9%.
North Carolina: Trump won it in 2016 by 3.7%, but he’s down by 1% now.
Ohio: Trump won it by 8.1%, but he’s down by 1% now.

Biden was expected to win but the margins are massive. Same thing happened in Nevada but this solidified him as the most viable moderate. He needed to widen the gap between Buttigieg and he did. Remaining wildcard is the Bloomberg effect.
