2004 was a bad year all around for liberals. While Bush's popularity was low, there was still a residual fear of another 9/11 that scared enough people into voting for Bush/Cheney. Didn't help that Michael Moore was basically the face of liberalism at the time. Iraq was an objectively stupid thing to get into and yet Democrats couldn't figure out an opposition message that didn't rely on hyperbole.

For Kerry, the Swift Boat stuff was especially harmful because we were still bowing to the troops. I don't imagine his Vietnam opposition would have been nearly as damaging today. He’s also ahead of his time in terms of what an automated economy looks like 25+ years from now, at some point we’re going to need either a UBI or another mechanism to solve for the fact there aren’t enough 40 hour /week jobs to go around anymore.

I also think an Asian candidate helps solve for the tensions between blacks and Hispanics, which is an increasingly problematic elephant in the room Democrats haven’t been able to solve for. An Asian candidate still makes the Dems look like the “inclusive” party but blacks and Hispanics won’t feel slighted by seeing the other one get the nod.

Yang is a pure political neophyte. Time will tell if he cares as much about the things he professes to care about as much as vaulting himself to prominence and power.
