We’re probably going to fill up fast on WR’s. As long as we get Burton and Stewart. Some of these other guys are going to have to get in line. Just like Roach said, “Andre Coleman’s job just got a lot easier.”

Mike Roach put in a cb for Armani Winfield WR 2022 (confidence level 7.) Roach is usually pretty conservative with his cb’s unless he has pretty good intel.

He just put one in for five-star 2022 CB Denver Harris of Galena Park North Shore too.

On 2022 DE Omari Abor of Duncanville...24/7 reporting the Ewers commitment is already helping there and Texas is closing the gap on OU.
The staff has done a good job of selling him on his fit in the new defense, and also telling him he has a chance to play basketball.

Brandon Drumm on the OU 24/7 site said he’s still 50/50 on Camar Wheaton. Said he’s still hearing a lot of positives between Texas and LJ and his sources say that if LJ lands in Austin it’ll make Wheaton’s decision a lot easier (to commit to OU). Said he was unsure if Wheaton will be at Saturday’s sooner summit circle jerk.
Kind of a non-update but at least it looks like we’re still getting one of the two.

Or he looked at Card and JQJ and then he looked at Ewers and shat himself. It's a more plausible explanation, they have had that oline class for a while and didn't pull the trigger, it wasn't until Ewers committed that he switched his commitment.

I think that’s closer to the truth than what Drumm wants to reveal to his readers. I’d bet the staff would take Wheaton over LJ simply to keep him from running amuck against us in the future. LJ isn’t interested in OU and would probably fall to A&M which doesn’t really impact the future. Both guys are very talented and can’t go wrong either way. Highly doubt we claim both of them and still be able to grab Blue in 22’.

You could be right. Doubt if Ewers scared him off. After all he is taking on Young for competion.Milroe might not be as good passer as Ewers but is guicked and faster. Then he is gone so none of that matters to Texas.

Have you seen Ewers film, dude has some wheels, I'm talking Colt McCoy fast, I'm pretty sure he is faster than Milroe. Ewers ranking is a perfect 1.0000, the last QB to earn that ranking was Vince. There is a video of Ewers throwing a football from his goal line all the way to the opposite 15 yard like. 85 yards in the air. There are pro coaches already drooling over him. Unless Milroe was the second coming of Vince, he wasn't going to pass Card, and he is very likely going to get passed by Ewers.
Don't get me wrong, I like Milroe, but Ewers is on a whole other level.

yes, Milroe saw the writing on the wall being sandwiched between Card, JQJ and Ewers. And we still dont know how good JQJ is going to be. If he cant beat Card, the does he become a perennial backup, another Roschon (RB) or Hullaby (LB)? none of which are bad choices.

A number of teams were recruiting JQJ as a athlete with the idea that he can play either Safety or Linebacker. Card played Wr before he became a QB his senior year. The winner between those two will likely stay at QB with the other guy going to a new position.
I don't sleep on JQJ, he above all else is a winner and when your QB is a winner he will find a way to succeed.

Vito Corleone
08-20-2020, 10:45 AM
LJ Johnson or Wheaton would be perfect, I think we get one of them. What Texas really needs is a guy that can get the tough yards around the 2 yard line and that is LJ Johnson. We have guys that can get to the 2nd level what we don't have is that goalline guy that can take on a tackler and run over him.

I think Ingram (2 seasons left) and Roshon (3 seasons left) are both effective between the tackles. Blue or LJ could end up being another Cedric. What they dont have is a homerun hitter. Bijan might show to be that kind of RB and Wheaton has the speed to be potentially another Jamaal Charles.

I think this is the kind of guy you would want, esp as a backup. I think after wasting about 15 yrs trying to find the next VY, it's time to focus on the traits of what makes a great QB instead of being enamored with getting freak athletes as QB. It works in high schools, esp in Texas where a lot of HS coaches simply put their best athlete at QB and hope for the best... and it tends to work. Two things that should be the mark of a good QB: quick thinkers & accurate throwers. Leadership can be taught and they can grow into. Running ability helps but it isnt the most important trait. Recruit QBs that can throw accurately and manage the game; recruit athletes and RB to run the ball (they are plentiful; dont risk QB running as a fullback). I think we have enough evidence over the last decade and half to point this out...
Running QBs recruited/signed at Texas:
Ryan Perrilloux
Sherrod Harris
John Chiles
Tyrone Swoopes
Jerrod Heard
Kai Locksley
Jalen Overstreet
Casey Thompson
Roschon Johnson
Ja'Quinden Jackson
We dont know enough about Thompson or JQJ to make a determination but by and large, that is a list of disappointments at QB position.
Traditonal QBs recruited/signed at Texas:
*Buechele
*Snead
*Barkley
*McCoy x2
*Kinne
Gilbert
Wood
*Ash
Brewer
Merrick
Gentry
*Ehlinger
Rising
*Card
*= QBs that I think had enough of both traits to be successful. Gilbert could have developed into a quicker thinker with the right scheme and time to develop
Arguably everyone on the second list is better than anyone on the dual threat list (with the exception of maybe JQJ & Thompson). Also, something I noticed: with the traditional QBs, all I have to put down is the last name and you most likely will know whom I'm talking about. With the dual threat list, I felt the need to put the first and last name or some would not know who they are
Eastexhorn
08-20-2020, 05:13 PM

Sooooooo.... LJ committing soon?
That's probably a safe bet. Wheaton is on his way to sooners weekend function. Drumm said he doubts Wheaton commits this weekend but I think it's safe to say that Texas and OU are neck and neck for his recruitment right now and a visit will probably sway him in their direction. Most of the insiders have said they think we get LJ and OU gets Wheaton. I think the staff could probably have whichever one they're more comfortable with if they push hard enough on Wheaton after this weekend but I'm doubtful they can get both IMO. Seems like LJ is the one the staff wants just from reading what the pay sites have posted.
According to an insider on surly that seems to have legit information, we supposedly have a silent commit (maybe even 2) from the Houston area so that could be LJ.

Just one, just one. All I'm asking for is one recruit win over Bama and let it be Turner. Honestly, I dont really consider Milroe a loss to them because I think of that as more of the Ewers effect. However, they sure consider it a big pull from Texas and over the Horns.

could have been Ewers but I think it was to happen anyway. I think Milroe took offense that Yurcich was shopping around for another QB. Milroe started looking around and found common interest in Bama months ago. Apparently, reports have been that Card and JQJ have been looking really good and being recruited over (Ewers) pushed it over the top and made it happen now.

Is there something to the two hats on the ground? Why were they placed there?
Considering only a selected few reporters were given a heads up about this 'event' (as well as the location of the workout), I could be tempted to believe that this has been more than just a workout with the States elite.
But more likely, the hats were just taken off prior to the picture and put there randomly.

DL Shemar Turner quotes from OrangeBloods on his visit:
“It was good. I toured the campus, hung out with a few of the players, things like that,” Turner said.
“It was kind of just to refresh everything, since I haven’t been here in a minute,” Turner said. “I’m probably going to do some more visits like this, I just don’t know when yet.”
“I’m still trying to take my time,” Turner said. “I’m still looking at five. Right now, they’re pretty much all neutral.”
“I really like coach Ash. I like the defense they’re running,” Turner said. “They told me about their defense. They pretty much said I’d be a strongside defensive end there.”
The 6-4, 282-pound Turner is ranked as a four-star prospect. He checks in at No. 138 on the Rivals250 and holds close to 40 scholarship offers.

Agree, but it seems as though Ewers is a little (maybe a lot) like Sam was/is and bleeds Burnt Orange. Also, I just dont think Milroe was quite on board with Yurcich and vice/versa. Milroe would've been a great fit in the TH/Beck offense, but Yurcich seems to emphasize the RPO a lot more with a heavy emphasis on the PO.

yeah, we kind of knew it would come down to either Camar or LJ but unlikely to get both. I think Camar would have been a nice skill set to compliment what is on board now but LJ could be another workhorse, and that kind of guy you dont want to turn away. I think Camar ends up at okiehoma but I hope he ends up at LSU. That would give Texas a leg up recruiting Blue in '22 class. Apparently, Camar wants to stay close to home for his mother's sake; if true, that kind of rules out Bama and LSU.

From Roach:
—I stopped by DeSoto to see the talent on hand for the Eagles this year. I’ll talk a bit more about the talent I saw later tonight, but I did get the opportunity to talk with Shemar Turner. Fresh off a visit to Austin, Turner was spotted in Texas shorts and gloves during practice. In fact, he started to run off the field when he saw me taking pictures, but we laughed about it afterward. Turner is closing in on a decision sooner than he imagined with no official visits available, and he wants to go see the campuses he’s considering again. It’s likely he will visit Texas A&M next week, and he’d like to make it to Alabama, LSU and Georgia if possible. As I mentioned, Turner is starting to tighten his circle. He’s getting extremely tired of the recruiting process, and we didn’t even go on the record for an interview because I could see how much the media attention is taking a toll on him. It sounds like it’s still a battle between Texas and Texas A&M right now that will come down to the very end.
—Four-star 2022 Port Arthur Memorial CB Jaylon Guilbeau announced he will make a decision soon. The teammate of 2021 Texas commit Jordon Thomas has long been high on Texas, and I’ve had a Crystal Ball pick in for him since the spring to land in Austin. I was hearing for the last month or two that things were heating up with him and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him commit soon. In checking around today, I haven’t heard anything that would make me change my pick from Texas

I'm telling you, this Wright kid has an amazing arm, he doesn't have the quick release that Ewers has, (I haven't seen anyone that has a release like he has) but he is strong accurate and can move. If we didn't have Ewers I'd say he would be a guy we could build around. Honestly, we have such a full QB room I could see him being our Joe Burrow, a guy too talented to keep on the bench and he leaves to another school where he wins a Heisman. In short, this kid has got some talent.

From IT:
Way too early predicted finish:
RB LJ Johnson
WR JoJo Earle or JJ Henry or BPA used elsewhere
OL Jack Leyrer/Player to be named later, they haven’t cast a wide enough net to make a good prediction
DL Shemar Turner/Albert Regis
LB Terrence Cooks
DB Andrew Mukuba
Best Player Available candidates:
DE Landon Jackson -- difficult to flip from LSU but not impossible due to relationships in place
DE David Abiara — I think they should stay in this one as long as possible while selling football and academics. 2022 doesn’t have as many options at D-end and Texas is way behind for Ernest Cooper.
CB A late emerging in-state talent or someone from out of state
OL maybe a couple of O-linemen I’m tired of discussing
Flips
Overall, Texas should want to land Johnson, Mukuba, and Cooks as soon a possible while continuing to recruit the priorities on a longer timeline. Otherwise, keeping powder dry for what could be a wild flipping season is a good idea.

From IT:
STATE OF RECRUITING
Targets with timelines that expire before the beginning of the 2020 season are surfacing. Texas continues to trend for a handful of prospects in 2021 and 2022, and there's legitimate buzz surrounding a few:
RB LJ Johnson, Cy-Fair. (2021) One of the top tailbacks in Texas is getting closer to a decision. It's no coincidence that LJ's vibe probably pushed Camar Wheaton out-of-state. Once a reported A&M lean, Stan Drayton has been strutting the last few weeks in this pursuit. We think we know why.
DL Shemar Turner, Desoto. (2021) The recruitment of Shemar Turner is heating up. After making a trip to Austin last weekend with his uncle, mother and other family members, a visit to Texas A&M this weekend looks like a strong possibility. Texas began Turner’s recruitment as the favorite but slipped to outside the top five at one point. Now the Longhorns are back squarely in the mix with the Aggies, Alabama, and LSU. With that said, Texas A&M has been quietly mentioned as the favorite in the last two weeks due in large part to family members wanting him to stay close to home. Terry Price has built a positive and consistent relationship with Turner and his circle for quite sometime. There’s a possibility Turner could move up his decision timeline to early in the season, but that doesn’t mean there would be a public commitment or there wouldn’t still be official visits to out of state schools when/if that possibility becomes a reality. There is also one more potentially impactful development that could swing the Turner recruitment — but that is being monitored to see what transpires in the next month.
DL Albert Regis, La Porte. (2021) Texas and Albert Regis continue to be a positive. Regis knows he’s coveted by the Longhorns, and the Texas staff is remaining in contact with the correct people. Regis has repeatedly informed people close to him that he doesn’t want to rush a decision the second time around, but as more spots fill, his hand may be forced if he wants a spot at a certain school or two. There is a chance Texas could take two more DTs in the class, as well. Regis and a prospect to be named later.
OT Jack Leyrer, Highland Park. (2021) The big tackle from the land of the Scots will be arriving in Austin on Saturday morning. He'll have Prince Dorbah and walk-on Paxton Anderson, two current Longhorns and former Highland Park teammates, to escort him through the city. This is far from a lock, but this might be the softball not named Hayden Conner that Herb Hand has needed in this cycle. He wants to decide soon, and I'd bet he'll have his answer after this weekend.
CB Jaylon Guilbeau, Port Arthur Memorial. (2022) The Golden Triangle four-star with 16 offers, including Alabama, Georgia, and Texas A&M, and teammate of current 2021 Texas pledge Jordon Thomas made a business decision on Monday, and left town due to Hurricane Laura the following day. Texas has had the lead for a good amount of time here, but the biggest help was the day Thomas committed. His week one battle with La Porte and UT target Albert Regis looms large.
WR Armani Winfield, Lewisville. (2022) When you mention potential prospects for 2022s cycle, Winfield's name keeps popping up. I don't think he's necessarily close to a decision, but I do believe it would be Texas if he picked today. Part of me thinks he could commit out of nowhere. He's somewhat of a showman.

Pretty sure it was in regards to how the staff is utilizing the transfer/grad transfer process in order to pull in guys that can have an actual role with the team this year while still maintaining a positive recruiting presence in regards to playing time and promises made to current recruits.

From Mike Roach:
The Longhorns are still looking for options at the wide receiver and offensive line positions, and we have a few updates on targets and where things stand. Defensive recruiting has been really strong for Texas in this cycle, but now they are looking to close the door and finish strong on that side of the ball. Over the weekend, I checked in with sources surrounding multiple prospects in both classes to get a feel for what was new in recruiting.
—I changed my 247Sports Crystal Ball pick for Ketron Jackson last night. After originally hearing STRONG buzz around Texas, it appears that Arkansas fought back int his recruitment. As a refresher, Jackson took a visit to Austin last month on a self-guided visit. Coming out of that weekend, sources near the four-star Royse City wide receiver indicated that Texas was in a commanding position. In the meantime, Arkansas never backed off and the work that Razorbacks wide receiver coach Justin Stepp put in should be commended.
It should also be mentioned that the existing Razorback class seems to have a better bond with Jackson as they’ve been talking longer. I thought there might be a change once Texas landed Quinn Ewers considering a number of people near Jackson thought Texas would be the better long term move for him. Things could still change, but I’m hearing enough now to make me think the Razorbacks will be the pick if he decides anytime soon. Outside of offering earlier, I’m not sure what more Texas can do here. I’ve heard on several occasions that Jackson has great appreciation for Andre Coleman and feels he’s a strong coach, but his long term loyalty to a program in Arkansas that has been recruiting him for quite a while seems to be winning out at the moment. We will continue to monitor this, because it could change just as quick based on the way it’s gone so far.
—I checked with several sources near four-star Port Arthur Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. As he announced last week, he’s closing in on a decision. My Crystal Ball pick has been on the Longhorns since the spring, and I don’t feel it has been a particularly close race during that time. I think schools like Texas A&M have certainly been in the picture, but Jay Valai did an outstanding job offering Guilbeau and establishing a bit of a chokehold on his recruitment. I still haven’t been told for sure who Guilbeau will be picking, and I’m not sure he’s told many around him.
That said, unless a major surprise is coming from Guilbeau, the buzz seems to indicate that the Longhorns are in a great position down the stretch. I feel Guilbeau will get his decision out of the way before the season starts so he can focus on his junior year. If Texas can close the deal for Guilbeau, it might help Texas with a few other targets. He plays his 7v7 ball with Fast Houston and is close with Texas target Jaydon Blue. He’s also close with former Fast Houston defensive back and LSU commit Bryce Anderson. Guilbeau and Anderson are both Golden Triangle residents as well, so it wouldn’t hurt to have another positive voice for Texas.
—I once again checked in with sources near four-star Spearman (Texas) ATH Brenen Thompson. I know there’s been a lot of Oklahoma buzz around the small school speedster, but I think his recruitment is still fairly wide open. One source near Thompson told me that no school has done a better job showing love and establishing a relationship than Texas. I don’t expect Thompson to make a move anytime soon unless something changes on that front. That said, Thompson understands the type of talent Texas is looking to assemble in the 2022 class and he’s paying attention to the potential of the group. I believe Texas is recruiting him as an athlete, but they seem to like him on the offensive side of the ball with some versatility to play in several different positions.
—I spent some more time with four-star Frisco Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewartover the weekend. Stewart is a bit of a renaissance man. Aside from being a star receiver and elite track and field athlete, Stewart is also a social media star. He has over half a million followers on Tik Tok and his brand will help make him marketable at the college level. While the NIL ruling is something Stewart is aware of, he told me he doesn’t believe it will be a major factor in his decision. Texas remains in a strong spot, and Stewart said no recruiter is working harder for him than Jay Valai. I continue to feel this one will play out a bit as Stewart will want to take part in the recruiting process, but I really like where Texas stands as of now.
—Highland Park OL Jack Leyrer made a visit to Texas over the weekend. While in Austin he spent time with former high school teammates Paxton Anderson and Prince Dorbah. Leyrer wants to go to business school and understands the appeal of a place like McCombs. I think Texas definitely made an impact there, but I’m not sure if it was enough to put them over the top quite yet.
Leyrer went into the process with a very mature outlook and thorough process, and there are other schools he’s considering as well. Stanford, Northwestern and Vanderbilt are three that come to mind. I still look for Leyrer to make a decision within the next few weeks.
—Four-star La Porte DT Albert Regis is taking his time with the process, but I think Texas is grabbing hold of the lead. A source I spoke with told me that Regis is very difficult to read, but I’ve heard that Regis is connecting well with Texas defensive tackles coach Mark Hagen and the Longhorns are playing this recruitment as well as they can. Texas A&M appears to be the primary competition, but I believe Texas still holds the edge as of now. I'm not sure when Regis will make a move, but Hagen seems to have his finger on the pulse of this one.
—Nick is slated to catch up with El Paso (Texas) Burges running back Tavorus Jonestoday. I’ve heard some positive buzz surrounding him and Texas lately, and I think the Longhorns are in a great spot early on. It sounds like a few players recently have been following up with the Texas staff following the commitment of Quinn Ewers, and while Jones is certainly interested, I don’t get theidea that he’s anywhere close to a decision.

As of this Morning IT was pretty adamant that Texas still leads for LJ, so I'm not real sure where your "several points" over Texas comes from.
Texas and Jackson isn't happening. Texas must feel really confident in next year WR class early on and more than likely decided to concentrate there with the better talent over what's left in the current class of recruits.

Gotcha. I think that was the trending back in May when Perroni CBed him. That was before Fong and Roach put in their picks for him later which moved UT into the CB lead at 52.9%. In the end it doesn't really matter. I do like that Fong is still bullish on LJ to UT and it sounds like he isn't planning on changing.
