As mentioned, I didnt follow them closely, but when he was playing, I always thought he was dumb. Probably a bias I developed from seeing the overplayed highlights of him screwing up certain plays in the playoffs with the game on the line. But since in the booth, when you hear him tell you what is about to happen on offense 2 to 3 seconds in advance, my view of him has completely reversed. He is not dumb and he never was a dumb QB either. Looking back, I drew conclusions on a small sample size. My mistake.

Romo also admitted mistakes and took blame with grace.
Dallas fans wanted him to be angry. instead he was apologetic.
when you have a bunch of pissed off fat men in arm chairs, you need to be angry.

He'll be back.... There really isn't much going on with recruiting right now. Dead period extended to after the first of the year because of Corona has really slowed things down.

IT is really feeling good with were Texas stands right now with DL's Shemar Turner and Albert Regis. They've even mentioned good things about WR Dont'e Thornton and thinks Texas is squarely in it.

https://247sports.com/Player/Donte-Thornton-46056489/

Hamilton also said today that Red Oak 2021 WR and Oklahoma State commit Raymond Gay is someone he feels Texas will offer and wouldn't be surprised if he flipped.

Well... we were preached at that there are things more important than football, which includes tackling, DBs being out played, OL blocking and giving up sacks to 3 man rush, OL run blocking, special teams play, on and on. maybe if they had taken another photo-op walk down the street this week like a bunch of peacocks, maybe they would have played better [sarc]

You tell me how our offensive line can look like they did in the 2nd half against 3 down lineman?
Can you tell me why on a pass play, our SENIOR RG is 15 yards down field blocking a defensive back. Its not a fkn screen play?

We all knew they would struggle a bit...2nd game of the year, 1st road game, in Lubbock, no doubt, and coming off a bye. We expected struggle, not to be outplayed in all 3 phases. I could have seen a 52-31 win. I was not expecting the 2nd half shit show I witnessed. Charlie Strong called, laughing, and said our ST sucks. Our OL couldn't block a mannequin at this point. I guess with the Covid, our D is practicing social distancing. TT players were running wild and free, frolicking like a bunch of fanciful unicorns......udderly (used this one on purpose) disgraceful.

I will take the win of course, thankful for it, but lots of improvements need to be made. This house has a lot of issues and the contractor (Herman) and his crew, need to pay better attention to the smaller details of the project, or else COLLAPSE.

BTW....O WHO? Lost.......Hook em

The hurdle runs always looks great when they work but when they don't, then oh man is it ugly. I hope he is ok.

yeah, that was just a dumb freshman move. DONT LEAVE YOUR BIGGEST ASSET - YOUR FEET! esp when the defender is standing upright. If the defender is lowering his helmet and obviously going low, then you MIGHT get away with it... BUT NOT when he is standing up and broke down to make a fundamental tackle. I'm sure he got away with that in high school and it looked really cool on the replay tape and he might have tried that in practice. If he tried that crap in practice and Drayton didnt jump down his throat, then that is on Drayton. VERY high risk and very low reward move. There is hardly anything good going to happen if the RB leaves his feet and the defender is playing fundamental technique.

I remember when Emmit leaped over the LOS pile up for a TD but landed on his shoulder, seriously injuring it and about ruined his career....but at least that was a leap with a purpose. I also remember when the 0U player leaped over the two UT DBs (Mykkele Thompson & Adrian Phillips) but if you look at the replay/photos, the DBs lowered their helmets and were not watching the runner (horrible tackling technique; Foster does this a lot). If the defensive player lowers his helmet & torso, then hurdling is acceptable if selectively used. In Bijan's case, the defensive player was standing upright (bad jumping choice #1) and, as a consequence, he had to jump vertically (bad choice #2) rather than hurdling losing all momentum even if he succeeded

That reminds me of 2004 when Texas played Arkansas and one of the Arkansas players tackled Vince and proceeded to twist his foot almost completely around. I'm sure it hurt, I don't think Vince missed a play from it and Texas went on to blow them out. A normal person would have had his ankle broken in half, but Vince was Superman.

I turned the game off with 3:13 left and down by 15. I spent the day pissed off and when I log back on I saw the final score and my jaw dropped.

I'm glad we won, but a lot was exposed in that game, I'm not worried about tackling, because tackling is a matter of constant practice. That is easily coachable they just need to constantly work at it. I am worried about getting consistant pass rush, coverage, and offensive pass blocking.

Herb Hand needs to be put on notice, his unit isn't doing very well and his recruiting needs pick up a few notches. I gave him a pass last year but he gets no free passes this year, get better or get out.

A few defensive notes.

BJ Foster lead the team in tackles, good for him after his temper tantrum last week. Hopefully he can build on this game. The one stat I like to look at is how many DBs are in the top 10 in tackles. A good sign 5 of the top 10 were DBs, this is good because of how many times they threw the ball. The fact that we had 5 guys in the top 10 tells me that we made some plays before they got to the 2nd level. For the freshmen, Alfred Collins got 4 tackles, so he is beginning to make some noise.

Next week, the competition gets a little tougher as we face a pissed off TCU team. Their offense and QB aren't as good but overall they are another step up in talent.

Good points, but some added comments....

I'm glad we won, but a lot was exposed in that game, I'm not worried about tackling, because tackling is a matter of constant practice. That is easily coachable they just need to constantly work at it.
agree... but the key word is "coachable." I would argue that Mack Brown had more teams that demonstrated poor tackling than teams that were good tacklers. If true, what does that say? The problem is that if it is not addressed directly in person (not just pointing it out on the film room), then bad habits from high school will continue.

Herb Hand needs to be put on notice, his unit isn't doing very well and his recruiting needs pick up a few notches. I gave him a pass last year but he gets no free passes this year, get better or get out.
yeah, at this level a position coach has to excel at something: primarily recruiting, and/or coaching player technique, and/or scheming position group to help players succeed on field. So far, the results are that Herb Hand hasnt shown to excel at any one thing.

I havent rewatched the game yet but first impressions were that something wasnt right on the defensive side. I watched the game but I dont remember Foster getting that many tackles and that game could arguably have been one of his better games but something is still amiss, IMO

I said last week that if the majority of tackles or, as in this case, the overwhelming majority of tackles are registered to defensive backs, then something is fundamentally wrong with the defense and I think it showed yesterday.

The amount of multiple solo tackles made by defensive backs & front 7 defensive players:

DB FOSTER (5)
DB ADIMORA (4)
F7 MITCHELL (4)
DB STERNS (4)
DB THOMPSON (3)
DB BROWN (3)
F7 GRAHAM (3)
F7 COLLINS (2)
F7 OVERSHOWN (2)

so, of the top six tacklers, 5 were DBs with 19 solo tackles to 4 for the front 7

Edited to add: Even though this works as a quick look, I need to add a caveat in that a certain analysis consideration should be given when playing against pass-first/air raid type offenses since they generally pass outside the front 7 and 5+ yds deep. That being the case one would look at each play and determine how effective each of the F7 were in their assignments, tackles for a loss, sacks, QB pressures, fumbles caused, etc., which I dont have time to do. Coach Venables (InsideTexas) use to do this but I havent seen his analysis so far this year

I will add one last thing.

Not since 2009 have we had a team that could come back from 15 down with 3 minutes to win a game. That is progress, if we can learn to block we will have an unstoppable offense.

Defense was exposed we need to see some serious improvement otherwise we are not in the playoff picture.

If I picked the playoff right now this is how I'd pick them.

Clemson
Bama
Ohio State
Oregon, (they got some serious real talent this year, on both sides of the ball).

I agree with your overall sentiment. There is an old sayin' that "Good teams win bad games" and maybe that is what we saw yesterday.

And, yes, the defense was exposed and they have plenty of tape to review. If any of them thought they were too woke for the game, I hope this game woke them up.

A concern I have is how much the secondary was torched... a secondary that was all highly rated and now almost all upper classmen. I really thought the secondary would control this game but they didnt

CB: JThompson (Jr), Jamison (Jr), Green (Jr), Watson (RS-Fr)
S: CBrown (Sr), Foster (Jr), Sterns (Jr), Estell (Jr)
N: Adimora (So), Cook (Jr)

Some very good comentary on the game. One of myconcerns( have many) was the offense had several chances when another score would have put the game away. They failed that test.
Plus it tackling does not get better better teams or teams with better players will beat them.

I guess woke involves the new tackling system installed by Ash? The superior rugby tackling system That prevents injuries. Missing spring practice did not help either. Texas Tech had some huge hits in the game but they also missed tackles badly.

if you are implying they don’t understand they are playing in a violent game... that needs to be addressed immediately and the defensive players need to get out of the game completely if they don’t get this. Some of these guys are very good athletes and should possibly be steered towards other games. Go to the East Coast, get in superb distance running shape and join lacrosse. Go to Ok St and wrestle. Many other ways to enjoy competitive sports.

if the coaches have not figured out the kids really don’t like this game we have huge problems as a team. it’s also apparent that the kids might’ve been ultra woke The last two seasons on defense which clearly went away in the Utah game. Probably need to go back and look at that film and see what happened. My guess would be that they had a lot of time to work at proper technique with fresher faces coaching them

Typical big 12 refs. Nothing has changed there for sure. Tech was getting away with a hold on almost every play. Regardless, we found a way to win and now move on to the next one.

Tackling and pass blocking need major improvement, if this Team is going to make a run this year.

I dont think so... and he has said as much. He has moderation privileges on this site, which usually means he can modify & delete posting (and other minor things such as copy, move threads/postings, etc) but he does not have admin rights to ban posters and make significant changes - big difference. He would have to go to a site administrator and request the administrator do such things, which they are unlikely to do. These sites sell advertising based on activity and they are unlikely to ban someone posting on an off-topic thread (non-basketball) unless the posting is overly and repeatedly crude, offensive, vulgar, Surly, etc. And, as a longtime moderator of the Scout's Longhorn site (RIP), most older forums follow this template.

FYI- S Andrew Mukuba is supposed to announce on Thursday. From Suchomel's article today:

I know there was some confidence on the Clemson side after Mukuba spent some time talking to the Clemson coaches recently, but this one feels like it’s still up in the air and we genuinely might not get our answer until he announces his decision on Thursday. In fact, if he’s as torn as I believe him to be, it’s not inconceivable that he could delay that decision. I’m not expecting that, but something to file away.

Quotes from 2022 TE Donovan Green (Orangebloods):

“I’m trying to show everybody why I’m the best tight end in the country. Just get better, work on my technique,” Green said. “I want to show everybody I can get down and block whenever coach needs me to. That’s what you need to be able to do as a tight end.”

“I feel like anywhere you put me on the field, it’s going to be a tough matchup either way. If you put me in slot, have a linebacker covering me, I’m too fast. Put me against a corner, he’s too small,” Green said. “I feel like I’m just a mismatch anywhere I go. I feel like I’m good at blocking, but there’s always room for improvement. Same with my hands and route running.”

“I’m going to come out with a list of top schools on my birthday, October 28,” Green said. “I’m not sure (how many), but it won’t be a top 10, will be less than that.”

“Coach (Jay) Boulware, the tight ends coach, he talks me a lot. He texts me every day, asks how I’m doing,” Green said. “That shows me that he likes me, showing me attention. They just got a new OC from Ohio State, so I’m looking forward to seeing how they use their tight ends. The first game, the tight end scored, had yards. That was improvement, was good to see.”

Tom Herman is also involved in this one.

“Coach Herman talks to me too when he has some time. There aren’t a lot of head coaches who talk to recruits like that,” Green said.

“I told every school what I’ll look at is the atmosphere of the school, which school can set me up the best after college, and how they use their tight ends. Distance really isn’t a factor,” Green said.

Agree... Mukuba would be a real good round-out commit along with the other 4 DBs committed (3 CBs, 1 S; understanding that Bowman could be on the offense as well)... but if they get another 4-5 DBs in the 2022 class, they will adequately be prepared for the mass of DBs that are going to be depth charts losses after 2021.

If Texas was hurting for DBs this would hurt, but it's an area where he would be hard pressed to get on the field. What we need is offensive linemen. This is a make or break year for hand, he needs to excel at something, either development or recruiting. So far he is lagging at both, he needs to show that our line is elite as our WRs, RBs and QBs or he needs to move on and Texas bring in a oline coach with some skins on the wall. No more free passes for him.

Texas sophomore receiver Jake Smith is expected to make his season debut against TCU on Saturday.

Smith has been recovering from a hamstring injury and did not play against UTEP or Texas Tech. He has fully participated in practice this week and is expected to start this weekend, barring any unexpected setbacks.

Prior to this season, Smith received reps as an outside receiver and was expected to play multiple positions in the season opener.

However, it looks like Smith will remain in the slot on Saturday.

According to my sources, Smith will start against TCU. Brenden Schooler is the backup slot receiver, followed by Kai Money.

Even though Smith can play multiple positions, nobody inside the building wants him on the field for 80 plays, especially after recovering from a hamstring injury. In addition, I was told Texas has enough outside receivers and they want Smith to focus on the H-position. Everyone is confident in Joshua Moore, Marcus Washington, Al’Vonte Woodard, Brennan Eagles and Tarik Black.

Interesting crystal ball for Texas, esp at DE. There arent that many spots left and we know they really want Turner at DE and Regis at DT...BUT need OL. Something has to be not what it seems. Someone must be projected somewhere else or moving to the offensive side of the ball

I like the Texas dline against the TCU oline, that is a big advantage in this game. I've been waiting for Ossai to have his breakout game and I think this is the week it happens. TCU has good defensive backs but Texas has too many weapons, if the Texas oline can keep Ehlinger's uniform clean, I think this game becomes a blowout by half time.

I also look for the Texas running game to finally get on track as the TCU defense tries to take away Ehlinger's run opportunities in the zone read.

If I had to pick a score it would be Texas 45, TCU 16.

Is Herb Hand who we thought he was?

soldierhorn

Is Herb Hand who we thought he was?

yep, probably so. If he was stellar, Auburn mostly likely would have kept him. Sometimes a new environment is what is needed and sometimes it validates the situation.

Competing programs are negatively recruiting Texas BIG TIME and it is mostly impacting the OL. I can be a huge homer and say that is BS and Austin/UT sells itself, BUT players that want to make it to the next level or play for championships, it is easy to neg recruit Texas with regards to OL since very few have been drafted over a long period of time (much less in the 1st round) and havent sniffed a championship in over 10 yrs. And, then we have recruits like Little, Brock brothers, on and on, where others can say, "even their legacy OL players dont want to play there." How to combat this? Hand HAS to develop the players that has into being overachievers (Cosmi, Kerstetter, Angilau, etc) and get drafted above their recruited expectation. Right now, that is not happening making an easy perception to point out to recruits.

Actually the targeting call by the rule was probably correct. It seems as though there should be a distinction between a blatant and malicious infraction and one like this. A lesser penalty than ejection for a violation like this one.

rogcl1
10-03-2020, 12:34 PM
I don't know that these refs are biased but they do appear to suck. Hopefully the players play through it and clean up their mistakes and not get caught up in the officiating. Control what you are able to control.

Ok, after watching Eagles get tackled and no flag after everything else , perhaps these guys are biased or not even prepared to officiate middle school as has been suggested previously. And yes, I agree Mitchell got screwed. If you are going to call that there has to be a lesser penalty than ejection. It is still football.

Ehlinger is not elite, but he is a very good QB, with a complete game. He does have some accuracy issues, especially today. His receivers did drop some balls though. The OL is a mess. Our ST was better today, but still a mess. Our D was better, but couldn't get stops when needed. We play undisciplined and commit too many penalties. Our coaching staff is subpar. Injuries are starting to mount.

Ingraham extending was not smart. Just take the down and try the next one.

The refs were atrocious. We still should have won despite their poor game, but they really did screw us over on about 5 or 6 horrible calls.

To blame Ehlinger for the loss is so erroneous.
