Well shit
Lame, hopefully he recovers quickly.
Interesting for me on the depth chart:
1. Jake Majors on the sheet as a Freshman, exclude the kid from O'connor
2. BJ Foster a backup
3. We are loaded at DB
4. B. Robinson 6' 222? 222 elusive Freshman?
5. Christine Jones at RT.... some body needed?
6. Reese L as a backup to Ossai
7. Eagles not starting...
Edit
Christian Jones, not Christine.
Stacked at RB too.

Jones looks like a specimen, he is like a mountain.
Jake Majors was a very highly rated Center coming out of high school, but he jumping over Rafiti who probably needs to switch to guard or transfer, he isn't a P5 Center.
Seeing Andrej Karic up to second team is really a good sign, I think he is our next great offensive linemen.
Agree on our DBs, I would also add we are incredibly deep at DT as well. our defensive weakness is at DE and LBs, if we get those two positions up like we have at DT and DB and we are going to have a national top defense forget the Big 12, we will be up there with Bama and Georgia.
It's a good sign that Eagles is 2nd team, he needs a kick in the pants, I know he wears his emotions on his sleeve and these political things are affecting his brain. He is in a place where he either needs to poop or get off the toilet. He wants to be both a football player and an activist, I don't think he has the ability to be both, he needs to pick.
UTEP is going to be a good game to watch, I think we will have the chance to a lot of these young guys get on the field. I am most interested in seeing if our new position coaches have improved the play of the guys we have had in the system for 3 years.
Jake Smith having a hamstring injury absolutely sucks, there are 4 injuries that can be considered less serious, but have the affect of lingering over a much longer period of time. shoulder injuries, ankle injuries, groin injuries and hamstring injuries. I hope this isn't one of those injuries because he is going to be our best receiver this year.

Random thoughts on the game.Texas should look like JC playing a HS which is good. Should get a lot of the young players in to the game.
Over all DL looks good some times hard to seperate DE from DT some are interchangeable.
Have 12 LBS on ships surely can fill two positions.
Hope to see another QB by half time but doubt if I do.

I'm hearing now that Smith's hammy injury isn't that bad and he actually could play if this was a big game, but since it's UTEP he is sitting out.

Thats great to hear. Wanted to see him this game, but he isn't needed against UTEP. Most important thing is that it gets taken care of completely with no lingering effects and he is good to go for conference play.

You sound like you are telling the young man to shut up and run routes... pretty much the problem
Eagles is second string bc he isn't that great. He wasn't out of high school (4 star based off speed and potential). The OC said he doesn't play at 4.4 speed all the time. Him having political views isn't preventing him from playing ball like he should as a 6'3, 200 lb receiver running a 4.4, its purely just him and his confidence in himself and diagnosing things.
Idk, just messed up that people are putting football players in a bubble of ONLY being able to play football. Thats comparable to saying somebody needs to quit there job bc they have views and they let them known on Twitter or whatever, rather political or not. Not to mention, Tarik Black isn't a young scrub, he is graduate transfer from Michigan lol not UAB or some unknown school.

I think this was addressed in the video by our offensive of coordinator in a subtle manner. In my opinion it was subtly hinted that he is not understanding the new routes as well as Black is.
as far as why eagles is not comfortable with the new system is supposition. Black is ready, this is what counts.
woofwoof
09-11-2020, 10:23 AM
Yeah, I believe/assume ppl have their own viewpoints of the young man and are saying "well he should be first string if he is making comments like he did and bc he was here last year, leading returning catcher, etc."
Like I said, from his recruitment, I understood why we offered but he NEVER showed me the great speed he possess on the field. All in all, bc he has viewpoints and plays football, doesn't mean he needs to be first string lol... there are many people that do more than just one thing.
Rate players by their actions on the field Not by what you think is in their head or heart. Eagles will be on field 40 to 60 percent of the time depending on his actions on the field.

That's a naive way of looking at things in life. Someone can be your friend for 6 months, then roll a grenade into the operations center. What someone believes may be MORE important than their current actions seem to indicate.
Nonetheless, when someone threatens to sit out the season due to wokeness, or social justice, or political correctness, they could be using the political climate to disguise the fact that they are not living up to expectations in another area (ie. football field). I warned about this when it happened (maybe on another board) because it made no sense but fandom will be fandom and jock-sniffing will continue. This could be a HUGE life lesson for this young man but I doubt it will as long as people continue to tell how wonderful he is and kids will be kids.

I want him to play well enough to be on the field 90% of the time.
He made some fantastic plays. I want those plays back and occurring while he is on the field.
He is on the team, so I dont care about what is in his head concerning his personal political beliefs (as long as he is not thinking like a serial killer or some has strange psychosis)

Radio sideline announcer just said Texas players really huffing and puffing.
Indicated all the training missed was important.

Defense is dominant
O-line looking good but not great against inferior competition. It explains why they were getting eaten alive going against the Horn's 1&2 in practice
WRs: Black is real good & a home run get. Moore looks real good as does, Whittington & Washington. Eagles has been a disappointment; had a pretty bad drop right in his hand; and not getting any separation causing Ehlinger to throw it away on more than one occasion
RBs: Roshon looks real good. Ingram doing a workhorse effort but I dont see a whole lot of zip in his game. He should be eating up this defense. Bijan looks like a true freshman; nothing spectacular yet

Thanks
It sounded like the offensive line was not getting a lot of push on runs, but it is difficult with the offense we use.
Sounds like the pass blocking is good.
The defense sounds incredibly dominant. Personally I feel we could give up big plays against any offense in the past.
Im just very pleased we can get a bunch of kids playing. I hope we can get a view of Thompson and even Card.

I'll be mad if They come out in the 2nd half and Sam is still out there. He has no business playing in the 2nd half. Kasey Thompson need all the reps, and they need to be meaningful, with about 15 pass attempts. I want to see all 4 running backs getting a lot of work.

wow...
I knew something was up when he was listed as a backup.
The guy was a lights out hitter and gave his body up, took a lot of punishment.
I would like to have him on the roster, never know what happens. Remember when our secondary got completely decimated...
He was a safety who could come up and tackle with ferocity. They practice with these kids everyday, so I trust the coaches judgement (unless notified otherwise like our old WR coach)
Stuff must have been building up though. You just dont quit like this.
imo , without knowing his attitude besides he just quit? , I would like him back. New coaching staff who just does not know the kids that well? Or he really is a head case. Sometimes a lack of communication results in impulsive actions... or, he may need to be gone.
It would be interesting to know what his teammates think.

You don't quit on your team and expect to come back. It's one of those unwritten rules in Team sports. He's more than likely done at UT. He's a good player and I wish him luck wherever he goes.

Per TFB:
As you know, there have been reports regarding BJ Foster quitting the team and leaving yesterday’s game during the game.
I spoke with sources. Am told that he did indeed leave the game out of frustration.
But, I am told that he has already apologized to coach Ash. He is set to meet with the whole staff and it sounds like he is repentant for the decision and will express that to the coaches.
I know in the football world walking away from your team is seen as the unforgivable sin. And, I get that. But I do believe that when you consider the staff changes, the external pressures on the kids through Covid and social unrest and the fact the Foster went from being a star defensive player to a back up, it would be wise to consider this situation more carefully.
I do believe that if he does express his remorse (again, I’m told he has and will in a more formal meeting) the coaches will make path for him to redeem himself. And, I personally would agree with that position
I don’t understand how he became a backup to begin with.

I don’t understand how he became a backup to begin with.
He is not a great cover safety and is probably better suited to play LB (or perhaps for us the SPUR). But he reported at under 195, which was less than his freshman weight.

I don’t understand how he became a backup to begin with.
He's a one trick pony. He goes for the hi-light reel big hit (poster-ing in basketball). Granted, last year he played hurt... but when you play hurt due to your own fault (shoulder & hand) you dont (and shouldnt) get a whole lot of sympathy. I dont know... but I'm pretty sure the new DC wasnt impressed with last year's tape where he looked sub-par having to depend on technique more than athleticism. He had a bad year which showed poor coverage skills, taking bad angles, and ton of missed tackles usually leaving his feet with head down, throwing his shoulder at air... over and over and over. Similarly to Eagles on offense, he'll show one or two dazzling plays and that's what people talk about instead of the whole game and risk/reward results.
What I saw was a defense that improved their fundamentals dramatically. When a players play fundamentally, you dont have to disguise things with complicated schemes. When things are less complicated, players dont have to think as much and can play fast. I saw a MUCH faster defense on Saturday than any regular season game last year. jmo

As long as the guy is remorseful and is willing to work his ass off to get back to the team, you chalk it up as a mistake. Something all 18-22 years olds will make. Problem is their lives are more visible to the public so we hear and see about them.
When you are playing a position, and mostly at a high degree, you may not want to change positions. May seem small and minor but smaller guys get nervous when getting moved up closer to the line. He was a starter since probably freshman year, got bumped to second string with a new DC and position coach, and is most likely going to be forced to switch positions. Trust probably just isn't there with the current staff yet. Once that happens, he'll probably be flying around like he was before just at Will linebacker, where he needs to be.
I am in no way defending him, I just try to give a different perspective as to how the younger generations MAY be thinking. I remember being forced to change positions and I wasn't comfortable with it and eventually got moved back and played a lot more free-er at the position I wanted to be at. When you have to think too much, it makes playing well a bit more difficult. This would be equivalent to doing a job at work, a new boss comes in and wants you to change HOW you do that, most ppl gripe about it whether to the boss or not. Truly the same thing.

A lot of super athletic players get away with a lot of sloppiness in high school because they are often the most athletic guy on the field and can make up for incorrect decisions or poor technique. Stating the obvious but, the athleticism gap is severely reduced in high-end D1 football and top end players dont get away with (or exposed with) what they did in high school. That is even more true the closer you get to the LOS. At safety, you can get away with taking a wrong step or two if you are athletic enough. However, a wrong step or two at LB puts you in prime position to be gobbled up by OL or causes desperation dives just to get the tackle in the lane for which you are responsible. You simply cant get away with a lot of sloppiness or bad technique at LB and be effective at this level, esp if you are undersized

Thoroughly agree and truly he may need a redshirt year to get adjusted to a LB roll. All in all, it has to be hard hearing and knowing you are good enough to be a starter but you are a backup. He needs to swallow his pride and take a year to gain weight and LEARN the LB position.

This seems to indicate he cant be taught coverage skills. If he stays on our team he has to be taught something. Or we just made a big whiff on trying to recruit him as a football player. If he is ours, make an effort to teach him something that can get him on the field. Or let him go. The goal for all these guys should be they could see the field in an important role even though it might not become a reality. We got a bazillion grad assistants and ex players and coaches to help.

I’m really curious if he was overworked physically at too much of an early age. Not sure if this is even a thing or if it’s just a myth. He’s always been very developed physically even as a true freshman. Maybe too much focus on hardcore weight training. I thought maybe Baylor Cupp of ags had the same problem. It’s also his second consecutive year being injured and not being able to contribute. Baylor’s dad is sort of what Jordans brother is. Both are being trained by body builder types. Most of you know Jordans brother is a monster. Baylor’s dad is very imposing as well. May be nothing to this just something I’ve wondered about. Every time Jordan is in the game I’ll always fear he can get knicked up on any given play.

This is really a tough sport science question.
if we could get a really good view of the injured area during the collision or the injury we might be able to say it was unavoidable or possibly even a flexibility issue.
this is really difficult because everyone has slight differences in the way we are put together.
couple this with the difficulty of knowing exactly what forces were involved and which direction during the injury and it’s really tough.
so we tend to look at body types and make generalizations which is all we can really do because the other stuff is so difficult.

I would doubt it very seriously, especially if we win out with clearly dominant wins.
If we beat Oklahoma in the reg and championship game and dont make it... Look out for possible conference realignment.
I would say look out for it regardless but this would really cause a mess.

pretty much agree with this. At this point, they really need to get one or two transfers
Edited to add: That, of course, depends on what the plans for the three seniors & Cosmi turn out to be, IMO. The roster was already a couple of OL short of the 16-18 OL bodies needed for a healthy development timeline. This class needed 4 OL to replace the three seniors (Kerstetter, Imade, Okafor) and Cosmi as a projected draft loss. I'm not sure any of that will happen now that they all can have another year to build up their resume tape. I have no idea but I suspect Kerstetter & Cosmi are draft losses in spite of the situation but it's possible that Imade & Okafor may want another year to build their resume.

I dont think so. September is usually the month for OOC games so if they dont have OOC games, then they can have a full slate of conference games & a CCG maybe a week deeper into December than they normally do. It also depends on how many, if any, bye weeks they have to determine when the CCG will be held with enough room left to participate in CFP and how many bowls. this is why starting up in the first few weeks of Oct is so important. Now, if they start in late Oct, then they may not have any bye weeks straight through CCG, which is not optimal to say the least.

My take is the BIG10 simply gave into pressure. It's not a medical decision -- the situation hasn't materially improved, it's that they feel left out and the people who care most about this stuff want the teams to play. Don't forget the lost revenue if they don't play even with little attendance when you take into consideration sponsors and tv contracts and such.

Something I want to point out about this years defense after 1 game vs last year. Look no further than the fact the dline is making plays. Last year there wasn't a dlinemen in the top 8 in tackles. In fact if you want to point to a single statistic of why we had so many injuries to the defensive backfield, look at how many of them were in the top 8 in tackles.
This is going to be a huge factor this year, keeping offenses from getting to the 2nd level of your defense. We still have to face a bunch of Big 12 offenses and we all know the Big 12 has good offenses without having great players. We need to keep guys healthy this dline is going to make it very tough to run against us, and we have the big boys to free up Ossai to make plays.

Good point. that was one of my main arguments with some of the Mack Brown defenses. When the top two or three tacklers are DBs, then you have something fundamentally wrong with your defense.
This was my immediate thought after the Utah game in the Alamo Bowl. The DL/FBs had a completely different MOJO and it paid off big time
Solo tackles in the Utah game:
LB/DE Ossai 6 - 3 sacs - 6 TFL
DB Sterns 6
DB Cook 4
DT Coburn 3
LB Adeoye 2
LB Mitchell 2
DE Roach 2 - 1 sac - 1.5 TFL
DE Graham 2 - 1 sac 2.5 TFL
LB McCulloch - 2
DB Foster - 2
The DL/LBs secured this win with a monster game. What does that tell us since the current DC wasnt at the Utah game? The current DC has aligned with the head coach and problem was the past DC, IMO

I finally rewatched the game and I specifically watched the offensive line. Here is my notes. I'm keeping in mind that this was against UTEP, probably the worst team we have faced in the Tom Herman era.
Cosmi- nearly flawless performance
Angilau - Very good performance, he missed a couple of run blocks but pass blocking was what to be expected against a team like UTEP
Kerrstetter - Outside of his holding call, he had a decent game, he got beat on a pass play but overall he did pretty well.
Okifur - very disappointed, his days as a starter are numbered if he continues to get beat like he was against the Miners. He just looked like he didn't belong
Jones - surprisingly good, he isn't as strong a pass blocker but not bad for a first time start.
When we recruited Karic he was a 3 star, he ended up a 4'star, and from watching him play as a true freshmen, I was impressed, I think we have a good player in the making. Same for Tyler Johnson and Hookfin. I'm really liking what we have on the offensive line right now.
I will continue to watch these guys as the competition gets better and better I want to see where they peak out at.

2022 IT Texas Covet List:
We’re factoring supply and demand considerations against program need. The 2022 cycle is loaded with elite talent, but linebacker, per the usual, is a bit thin at the top with one prospect head and shoulders above the rest. Also, for the second year in a row, corner isn’t as deep as it has been in the past. That will increase the frenzy for a certain North Shore athlete. But overall the class is so good we had to invoke This is Spinal Tap and take it to 11.
1. Quinn Ewers, QB, Southlake Carroll
Ewers was at the top of the list of “must get” and most coveted recruits in the 2022 class for Tom Herman and staff. Not only was Ewers the No. 1 ranked prospect in the country, but he is an in-state quarterback that literally grew up wearing Texas football jerseys. Add in the fact Ewers would have likely gone to Oklahoma if the pick wasn’t Texas, which would have held influence with an uber talented skill group in the 2022 cycle, and this recruitment was a massive one for the Longhorns. Ewers' early pledge perfectly sets the tables for Texas if Herman and staff handle business on the field this season. - GH
Percentage: Committed to the Longhorns
2. Malick Sylla, DE, Katy
With the transition from an interior-focused defensive line to one that requires edge pressure, UT still doesn’t have the prototypical bodies it needs at defensive end. That could still be addressed in the 2021 class, and Ja’Tavion Sanders sure helps, but Sylla profiles best to being the bendy arc-running terror the program is currently missing. He’s already in high demand and wide open at this point. Texas will have a dogfight on its hands. The state has other options at defensive end, but things aren’t looking great for Earnest Cooper or Omari Abor. Perhaps UT can utilize Moro Ojomo to its advantage. - EN
Percentage: 15%
3. Denver Harris, CB, North Shore
Easily the top cornerback prospect in the state and one of the best in the country. To be clear, IT isn't hyping up to be Derek Stingley Jr., but he's very talented and is a premium position prospect in a cycle where an elite corner is greatly needed. A 6-foot or bigger frame with legit 4.5 or better speed, loose hips, the eyes to play the position and willingness to be physical makes Harris a coveted prospect. Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Oregon, and a lengthy list of schools are after the North Shore product. Texas has been a constant in this recruitment, but Harris isn't a lock with LSU and Alabama circling - GH
Percentage: 60%
4. Kelvin Banks, OT, Summer Creek
After wandering through the forest of nationally-ranked offensive line prospects in the 2021 class and walking out with empty hands, Banks is a “must get” and one of the most coveted in the 2022 class in Austin. Banks has all the tools to be a terrific tackle with a very good frame, 80-inch wingspan, big hands, impressive reactive quickness and the ability to bend. Add in that he’s a good student with strong parental influence, and Banks is coveted by many of the nation’s top programs. Texas began Banks‘ recruitment as the favorite prior to his Oklahoma State verbal per a source close to the uber talented tackle, but LSU and Texas A&M are squarely in the mix in what looks to be a close-to-home three team battle at this point. Herb Hand’s ability to build a strong relationship with Banks will be key here. - GH
Percentage: 40%
5. Harold Perkins, LB, Cypress Park
Perkins possesses legitimate 4.5 laser speed and safety coverage skills in a projectable linebacker frame. He’s currently undervalued by the networks, but we’re expecting a big jump in his recruiting profile because of his uncommon athleticism. The modern game dictates you need range and coverage ability at the position, with baseline athletic requirements increasing in recent years. Perkins has national and regional suitors alike, but we feel he’s more likely to stay in the region. It will still be a battle for his services. - EN
Percentage: 40%
6. Devon Campbell, OG, Arlington Bowie
If we’re putting a guard this high on the list you know he’s special. While the bigger need for Texas will remain at tackle, Campbell has elite movement skills for the interior O-line. Whether you want to run inside or outside he’s a road-grader. The quiet young man will likely have a quiet process. This one comes down to three schools: Texas, LSU, and OU, with the first two doing the most work currently. Texas is recruiting him the hardest and right now is in a favorable position. - EN
Percentage: 60%
7. Caleb Burton, WR, Del Valle
There’s going to be a great discussion for the next couple of years on which of the top handful of receivers is the top prospect in the 2022 cycle, but Burton is arguably the most important for Texas. Why? He’s an Austin-area prospect, his dad is the head coach at Del Valle, and the commitment of Ewers has brought life back into this recruitment for the Longhorns. If the Texas offense continues to look impressive in the passing game, that will only help the chances of beating out Oklahoma, Clemson and many of the nation‘s top programs for Burton. Burton was in the stands for the first half of the Longhorns' season opening win. - GH

8. Jaydon Blue, RB, Klein Cain
Simply put, Blue can be Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the Mike Yurcich offense with his mix of running and receiving ability. He has the pinball traits that I love with home run speed, soft hands, and strong mental traits. He would also complement the Texas stable of running backs quite well, especially if the Horns land LJ Johnson and his between the tackles prowess in 2021. - EN
Percentage: 80%
9. Chace Biddle, DB, Garland
Biddle isn’t as polished as Bryce Anderson or Bryan Allen, both committed to LSU, but he does have as much athletic upside and playmaking ability at safety as those two. Chris Ash could easily spin Biddle’s natural gifts into a rangy, ball-hawking safety in his quarters scheme. In some ways, Biddle would be the opposite of recent DB takes, Jerrin Thompson, Xavion Alford, and JD Coffey. Those three have a lot going for them, but they’re not as explosive. - EN
Percentage: 75%
10. Evan Stewart, WR, Frisco Legacy
Texas is the favorite for the most explosive receiver in-state regardless of class. He’s pretty much a “must get” recruit for the Longhorns because of his ability to take the top off the defense and maximize after the catch with sheer acceleration. Having Ewers on board is big here, as is the success of the Longhorn offense this year. - GH
Percentage: 65%
11. Armani Winfield, WR, Lewisville
The 2021 cycle still has some chapters to be written, but right now wide receiver needs have yet to be met. Even if they are, Winfield’s all-around game would be an attractive addition. He can get a step on vertical routes or by clean route running. He has both ’target’ ability as well as winning over the top. I liken him to Charleston Rambo. - EN
Percentage: 75%
High school recruiting is not like the NFL where it could take years to provide your star quarterback with the weaponry and big bodies he needs. In one busy day of the fax machine going brrrr, Texas could sign a franchise left tackle, a game-breaking running back, and three wide receivers capable of gaining separation. And that’s just from this list. We didn’t have enough room for Donovan Green, who would help unlock the offense further, or PJ Williams and Kameron Dewberry who are also needs on the offensive line.
Obligatory: Just win, and keep spreading the ball around in the process.

- EN

6. Devon Campbell, OG, Arlington Bowie

FWIW, This pic reminded me that there is a rumor (InsideTexas) that Clemson and LSU might be filled up at certain positions or overall numbers. The implication being that Texas might be the best option for Mukuba & Cooks if they werent before.

State of Recruiting from IT:
We go in depth on one of the most important recruits of the cycle, discuss a long-shot that got a little shorter this week, and offer up some intel on offensive line targets.
Terrence Cooks, LB, Alvin Shadow Creek: After spending significant time at Shadow Creek yesterday, both for a visit with coaches and Cooks, and then Shadow Creek’s scrimmage, we’ve come to the conclusion that our read of this recruitment has been mostly right the whole time.
— Education is in fact important to Terrence and his mother, who is herself an educator. He wants to study ecology. Cooks seems to have a plan for life after football. He sees the sport as a way to springboard into the next chapter of his life and he’d like a little money in the bank to do so.
— When we asked about relationships, Coleman Hutzler was the first name he mentioned. Hutzler was also the most frequently mentioned coach, and the one Cooks went most in depth on. Cooks and Hutzler had a Zoom call this week. Hutzler has worked this one hard, but not too hard, as Cooks isn’t the type to be constantly bombarded. That doesn’t just go for coaches and writers (he apologized to “us”), but also his friends. He did mention he’s most close with Texas commits and he also talks to running back target LJ Johnson some.
— Timeline isn’t set in stone. When asked if he wanted to prolong things in order to build relationships with LSU he said it would be difficult for them to catch up in that regard because he’d still be talking to coaches at other schools he’s known for much longer. LSU is definitely late to the party, but too late? That remains to be seen.
— He mentioned Baylor some. The Bears are definitely working to play spoiler, and he does have solid relationships with them. He likes how they’ve recruited him. In the end we don’t see it, but it’s clear they’ve made some headway and they have his quarterback, Kyron Drones, committed.
— He doesn’t care about conference or how many players a school puts in the league, “if you can play they’ll find you.”
— One thing he does pay attention to is depth chart. He knows relationships are important with coaches in order to get a clear view of the depth chart.
Texas is still in a good spot to earn the commitment, but needs to continue to win over all the members in the Cooks decision tree. If the product on the field is as good as many think it will be, and if DeMarvion Overshown plays to his potential, we think it will end with his Horns up. Development is the final piece. Hutzler seems in control of this recruitment in more ways than one.
Dont’e Thornton, WR, Mount Saint Joseph (Baltimore, MD): The Longhorns and Thornton continue to advance in the relationship building department. Head coach Tom Herman had a productive Zoom call this week with Thornton, and since that time a key person in Thornton's circle has been in communication with members of the Longhorns staff. This recruitment is officially a realistic opportunity for Texas to land an outside difference maker. Thornton, like Jaden Alexis, is a total package recruit --- student body president with plans to major in engineering and study sports management. The theme of wanting to get away from home continues to be key in this recruitment for Texas, Oregon, Notre Dame, and North Carolina. For a recruitment still in its' early stages, the staff is excited about the communication level and positive feedback.
Andrew Mukuba, S, Austin LBJ - The best safety in-state continues to get closer to a decision. Not being able to take visits until January 1st, 2021, helps the Horns. Mukuba is getting antsy to lock up a spot in a class and right now UT is looking like the most likely beneficiary of that decision. At this time we don’t think Clemson is pushing to lock him up while Texas and Chris Ash are all in and have been for a while. We are keeping an eye on Arizona State as the Sun Devils are pushing the right buttons regarding playing time. If we had to predict, we’d say Mukuba decides in the next couple of weeks with the hometown school the most likely destination.
LJ Johnson, RB, Cy-Fair - We think this one reached a point where Johnson got cold feet, probably with he aid of numerous other schools telling him he might as well wait and see the results on the field at this point. Given his status, he’s a player with leverage and not in danger of losing his spot at the schools he truly likes. If the season is going to be a consideration, as it now appears like it will be, Johnson will want to see UT’s platoon run efficiently. He’s not hung up with being a volume back, in fact, it’s a turnoff. He just wants to enter a situation where he’ll have the opportunity to see the field and do his part. UT sets up well for that. We’re as confident as we were a month ago.
JJ Henry, WR, McKinney North - This recruitment is a tough one to handicap because A) Henry is hard to get a read on, and B) from our vantage, Texas is still trying to keep some optionality open as it works on JoJo Earle. There is still a glimmer of hope with the Aledo receiver. Henry does have plenty of advocates on staff and this could become an ‘all in’ recruitment in the coming weeks. He also likes Florida State, Ole Miss, and we sometimes hear A&M mentioned.
Jacoby Jackson, OT, Mansfield Summit - One of UT's most recent offers, the staff is certainly working on the 6-foot-6, 320-pounder. Baylor is the consensus leader at this point and thatmakes sense because whatever they’re doing recruiting the position, it’s working. We do think UT has a chance to angle in.
Erick Cade, OT, Denton Braswell - We don't mention the 6-foot-5.5, 313-pounder too much because he's still such an unknown in potential and projection. But he's big and strong, and has some interesting suitors. Holding 12 offers, it appears Texas, Alabama, LSU, and Arizona State are the four schools Cade has his eyes on. You‘ll notice ASU is always hanging around the rim. We’ve mentioned if Cade becomes a big priority that means UT missed elsewhere. We still think he’s a name to file away a little down the road rather ‘next man up’.
Max Merrill, OT, Strake Jesuit - This could be next man up. Merrill, at 6-foot-4, 275 holds 38 offers, including Colorado, Indiana, Purdue, Arizona State, Louisville, and virtually all the Ivy Leagues. He seems to have his eyes on two schools that have yet to offer - Texas and Stanford. A UT offer would be something Merrill would relish and push the Longhorns near the top of his list. Beware of the trees in Palo Alto. Jett Bush might actually help here. Merrill has some genuine upside.
Ty Buchanan, OT, Corpus Christi Calallen - Another of the next tier offensive tackles, at 6-foot-5, 280 pounds, Buchanan packs a solid punch and brings his lunch pail to work each day. With 30 offers in hand, only a few stand out - Texas Tech, USC, Oklahoma State, and Colorado. He speaks with Herb Hand often with Zoom meetings being the thing now. Like Jackson, it's tough to gauge his legitimate interest, but at this point, throw it on the wall and see if it sticks.

Just my opinion but defence is already set. In number of bodies.
15 returning DL.perfect number. Plus three DE seniors who could return.
13 LBS returning about 5 or 6 too many.
18 DBS returning perfect number. Plus two srs. options. Sterns could go pro. and Foster could finaly quit Who knows?
My take on the defence based on roster numbers. 46 players on ships about five or six too many for defence side of team.

Such's update this Morning:
Mukuba had four FutureCast picks come in for Clemson yesterday, but in checking around with a couple other Rivals reporters today, I'd put the confidence in those picks as moderate at best. Basically, Mukuba has done a good job of keeping everyone guessing and nobody truly has a good read on what he's thinking.

Only two senior DBs (Brown, Coutoumanos) but there are seven juniors (Cook, Green, Jamison, Thompson, Estell, Foster, Sterns) and so far (and this could change) I dont see any of them ready to leave for NFL so they need separation in the junior class. that may happen naturally due to the COVID free eligibility year but if they all graduate at the same time then the depth chart takes a huge hit

Jacoby Jackson (6-6/320), OT, Mansfield Summit
Erick Cade (6-5.5/313), OT, Denton Braswell
Max Merrill (6-4/275), OT, Strake Jesuit
Ty Buchanan (6-5/280), OT, Corpus Christi Calallen
Personally, I really like the 6-5/280 hard working, lunch pail type players. I remember when Cosmi was committed and I thought, oh geez, at 265 pounds it's going to take him 3 yrs just to get to playing weight or change positions; man, was I wrong. Andre Ware has expressed his dislike of Texas in the past and should NEVER call a game on the LHN again - period. Not only is he biased against Texas but he's boring and not a good play-by-play or color commentary guy.
I listen to Craig Way while watching the game on a streaming service. the problem is the video delay and the live broadcast can be as much as 30 seconds to 2 min apart. This is something that really cant be helped since the video has to go through servers (and that happens even if you watch it on LHN) and the live broadcast audio does not go through as many impedance hardware (including the mandated 5 second delay). For almost 10 yrs I've asked the TexasSports.com if they would put a "delay" sliding scale on the site if someone selects Web audio. That would allow the listener to retard the audio to match the video stream, which varies considerably. Obviously, I have not been successful.
That being said, there are also third party programs that will delay the audio coming out of your computer audio/video card. Even if it's not perfect, it works well enough that what I'm hearing is within a second or two of the video, if not better.

He wanted to play at Texas. Never got the offer. He's admitted it on air.

Thats the Andre... I did not even know and he was boring as crud and would not shut up. Seriously some plays speak for themselves. Silence can be golden. Honestly they need to learn some language from the English soccer announcers. They know when to shut up and they have vocabularies.
God that was awful.
Much rather have Craig Way.
I will never forget listening to a soccer game when Manchester City had bought the some of the best players in the World.
The announcer basically said:
"Manchester City in the powder blue; confident, and lavishly assembled."
And then silence to let the roar of boos take over as they were at Manchester United. Thats all. Intro and silence.
Our guys need lessons.

I apologize.
There was no way to make that game exciting except possibly shutting up.
But you would think they would think about how to approach this type of game by just staying quiet at times.

yep, and he's had a chip on his shoulder for 30 yrs. It seemed to have worked out for him but he likes to bring it up as if it really means anything.

The chip is not as huge as his horrible overall analysis and constant cliches.
So if he has a big chip,,, fck, he is awful. He needs a different job.
All these old athletes that cant speak or player speak... its so worn.

RIP to Sonny Detmer, one of the greatest high school coaches in Texas high school football history. He was both a good father and great coach

I would be curious how the rest of you feel about this
Has Tony Romo made all other color commentators look bad?
I will go even one step further with something my brother-in-law and I were discussing recently.
Having heard Romo's quick recognition and analysis of plays in real time, has it changed your perception of his career as a QB?
Do you now think he was a better QB than you used to think?
I say all this as never having been a Cowboys fan

No, but seeing the action from above probably helps a lot.

Mike Roach posted a note saying Tunmise Adeleye has been in contact with the coaching staff. He’s supposedly watching our defense closely. I wouldn’t get too hopeful here though.

Did VY get rehired? How do you get fired from a half million dollar job when all you have to do is show up? not show up

His salary was $100,000. No one in the UT Division of Diversity and Community Engagement makes $500k/yr.

I thought he had a position before that one; nonetheless, was he rehired?
Typically that's TE for us. They spontaneously combust like Spinal Tap drummers.

Earl was in that range as well. IIRC, Vince was hired as an assistant to the AD in the same role (or something to that effect); essentially all he had to do was SHOW UP and shake hands

Id probably stick with a rotation of Black, Moore, Schooler as starters with Eagles in for Moore, Washington or Woodard in for Black and Moore in for Schooler. That should be plenty and will give lots of rest. Plus, they can play more 12 personnel as well.

I was talking specifically about the slot back position depth chart in response to eastexhorn. Travis West is a practice squad walk on and was tongue in cheek

I hate Dallas.
Romo is excellent as an announcer and yes, a communicator.
Im just glad he is not QB with the offensive line given to Prescott. And the receivers Prescott has. I think Dallas could have had a SB with him and the right bunch. Im glad he is announcing.
Real stuff:
It would be really nice if our D could just crush TT. Get even more defensive recruiting momentum. Thats what I want for this game.

As mentioned, I didnt follow them closely, but when he was playing, I always thought he was dumb. Probably a bias I developed from seeing the overplayed highlights of him screwing up certain plays in the playoffs with the game on the line. But since in the booth, when you hear him tell you what is about to happen on offense 2 to 3 seconds in advance, my view of him has completely reversed. He is not dumb and he never was a dumb QB either. Looking back, I drew conclusions on a small sample size. My mistake.
