no at this moment i dont think texas could win the natty next year, but i certainly think they can win the big 12 and get into the CFP, which is far better than anything thats been done during hermans years, even though they had the talent level to do that every year hes been here

you said you think they aren't even close. i disagree.

no I did not.

24/7 is reporting that current DC Chris Ash is in very strong consideration to be retained.

They're also hearing increasing buzz on Blake Gideon. He is very well respected as a special teams coach, along with experience coaching safeties. He is currently a member of the Ole Miss staff.

as long as he teaches the DBs not to drop game saving INTs that would get the team to a NC game, sounds good to me tbh

but i really hope ash is retained

I still believe we dont have the talent however. We will already start behind with this incoming class unless some big switches take place.

I agree the talent right now is not enough for a natty. but I think a good coach like saban or meyer could have them legit competing within 2 years.

Mike Roach unloaded on Herman's recruiting

— Since the news of Tom Herman’s dismissal, I’ve been talking to many sources trying to find out where everything went wrong. Struggles on the field played out for everyone to see, but the recruiting difficulties late were something I didn’t see coming. As I wrote in The Stampede, it’s hard to knock a guy who cashed two Top 5 classes and a Top 10 class in his first three years on campus. In talking to sources, it seems that many times Texas excelled in recruiting despite its head coach.

— Perhaps I should have known right off the bat. When Herman was first hired, the reputation he had as a recruiter was fantastic. When I started calling around to gather reaction from coaches and recruits in the Houston area, I didn’t quite get the excitement I expected. In fact, some outright rolled their eyes when I asked about him. In Monday’s edition of The Stampede, I wrote about how arrogance and a lack of self-awareness plagued Herman and that was magnified at Texas.

— One source I spoke with who was close to Herman at Texas said he felt that his ego got the best of him. “Coming from Houston and Ohio State, he expected everything to be easy. When he faced adversity he didn’t know what to do.” For Herman, having some strong recruiters near him made up for it. Tim Beck was involved in just about everything Texas did in recruiting and covered up a lot of those issues. When Herb Hand was hired, Beck would go along on offensive line prospects and close. One such story I was told concerns Jaylen Garth. He was pretty much a slam dunk for Texas from the beginning, but Hand couldn’t quite close the deal. Because of his relationship with Roschon Johnson, Beck was able to step in and close it. As I came to find out, that type of pack recruiting was common.

— One former staffer I spoke with said the struggles in recruiting weren’t because the previous staff was great and the new staff was bad. They said that the old staff recruited well together, and gang recruited top kids. It was something they learned while at Houston because there were times when Herman wasn’t as involved with the recruiting effort. There were also times he meddled where he shouldn’t. The source told me that Drew Mehringer and Corby Meekins never got the credit they deserved because they were handcuffed on players at the position. Herman’s background was in coaching wide receivers and he wanted to have more oversight on that position than anything else. That caused Texas to stall or delay on targets like Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Mims. It was the reason Texas was late offering Jordan Whittington and initially offered him on defense. Even Garrett Wilson was in question when others on the staff wanted to move forward with an offer. Herman loved size in his receivers and valued it over the insane production of those previously mentioned.

— Many times, recruits mentioned that Tom Herman wasn’t as involved in the day-to-day recruitment like Lincoln Riley and Jimbo Fisher were. A former Texas staffer confirmed that Herman saw his role as primarily a closer. One source told me “Good head coaches recruit just as hard assistants do on the daily. It’s not just about the 20-minute meeting that you have with them on an unofficial visit.” In his role as a closer, Herman overestimated his position. One story that sticks out to me is the recruitment of Noah Cain. I had an excellent source near the four-star running back, and he told me that Noah agonized all night over the decision, but Tim Beck and Stan Drayton were bringing it home for Texas. After almost being ready to make the decision, Cain stalled one last time and Herman “blew his top” on him in a phone call. From that moment, the decision for Cain to move on and pick Penn State became easy and left a bad taste in the mouth of Cain’s parents.

Mike Roach unloaded on Herman's recruiting
https://247sports.com/college/texas/Article/Tom-Herman-recruiting-Texas-Longhorns-Football-Mike-at-night-158593985/

texas, for now at least, has an advantage over all other schools because of its reputation and strong traditions. of course, being located in austin also helps. but if texas doesn't get back on track with winning soon one has to wonder how younger players, who did not grow up seeing texas as a winner, will be drawn to the program for that reason.

woofwoof
01-07-2021, 06:53 PM
I feel ya RJV, but Texas isn't like Tech or Kansas State. Purely just having the name "TEXAS" on the front of the jersey and the colors, traditions, plus past excellence in VY and "old-timers" talking about Earl and Ricky... it is hard to say Texas will ever be in a baddddd place. Well worse off than this. I mean seriously, it's been 10 years of mediocrity/flat out embarrassing games to be a fan of, but we are still getting commitments from players like Quinn Ewers, JaTavion Sanders, Bijan, even though not Quinn isn't currently committed, Bijan is a man who could've went anywhere.

you need to look at top recruits in Texas last year. We got our ass KICKED ! It is embarrassing. Herman was miserable at recruiting that cycle, and was getting his ass handed to him again this cycle.

Hopefully Sark can get it turned around. Like rjv said he HAS to win. I think he will do a good job, but wonder if has what it takes to compete with OU.

A few top recruits will always come here, but a few is not gonna get us where we can compete for the nattys. we need to retain Texas talent, if we keep our top Texas talent and get a couple from other states we’ll be fine.

only way for that to happen is start winning.

From Ketch:

In talking to a couple of different sources about the vacant defensive backs job, I've been told that current Tennessee defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley (https://utsports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/derrick-ansley/3291) is a coach of interest for Steve Sarkisian.

One source I spoke with on Thursday night believes that Ansley is ahead of LSU cornerbacks coach Corey Raymomd, who I will have more in tonight's War Room.

Ansley has three things really going for him.

a. He's a monster defensive backs coach and regarded as one of the best young defensive coordinators in college football.

b. He's a monster recruiter.

c. He's a Jimmy Sexton client.

d. He wants out of Tennessee from what we're hearing.

I think the hire of Corey Raymond would turn some more recruits heads taking the coach responsible for continuing to turn out all the DB’s at LSU. Hopefully we grab whoever was Sarks first option.

Unbelievable the mess Herman left us in with this year’s recruiting class. Had no clue until now that Bama has 7 players in their class from Texas and every single one of them blue chips that we either had committed or led for at one point and time with exception of Jaedon Roberts. Such a letdown. Hope Sark has some tricks up his sleeve to end this cycle.

Horns 24/7

— One intriguing name to keep an eye on as a possible receivers coach candidate for Steve Sarkisian would be his former BYU teammate - Dennis Simmons, who just happens to be the receivers coach at Oklahoma.

Sources told Horns247 Sarkisian has an interest in Simmons, who played linebacker at BYU in the mid-1990s when Sarkisian played quarterback for the Cougars under LaVelle Edwards.

Simmons' first big break in coaching came with Mike Leach at Texas Tech as a quality control analyst and then as receivers coach, helping Michael Crabtree earn the 2009 Biletnikoff Award. Simmons went with Ruffin McNeill and Lincoln Riley from Texas Tech to East Carolina (2010-11) before rejoining Leach at Washington State (2012-14).

In 2015, Simmons joined Oklahoma's staff, helping Dede Westbrook win the Biletnikoff Award in 2016 and helping Ceedee Lamb win the Biletnikoff Award in 2019. Simmons added the title of associate head coach at OU in the spring of 2019.

It wouldn't be easy to lure Simmons away from OU, but we're hearing Sark has an interest in his former BYU teammate, who is considered a strong recruiter.

texas4ever
01-08-2021, 09:55 AM
Inside Texas

Dennis Simmons is beginning to surface as a possible option as a wide receivers coach. He was teammates with Steve Sarkisian at BYU.

Nick Saban has tried on two different occasions to hire him away, but Simmons has stayed with Riley and Oklahoma.

Simmons has coached with and under Lincoln Riley for over a decade at this point.

To this point, it's been considered highly unlikely Simmons would leave Oklahoma.

if you are Sarkisian, it's worth the effort. Simmons has been one of the best wide receiver recruiters in the CFB the last few years. He has long standing relationships with Texas high school coaches, is a volume recruiter outside of his position and is very good friends with influential position instructors in the state.

So far the staff is turning out to be way better from a recruiting standpoint than Herman's, IMO. We need to see how it finishes out. Bo Davis is considered an A+ recruiter. I'd love for Texas to get Jeff Banks from the Tide to Coach TE.

Non-update update.

To our knowledge things have not heated up with Arnett.

That leads us to believe barring a total unknown Golding is the most likely, but we haven’t heard that definitively. Call that an educated guess.

Previously we’d heard Golding would want to bring CB coach Karl Scott but Saban might have something to say about it. Saban is the de facto DB coach so if he wants to keep Scott that’s saying something. If he doesn’t want to keep Scott, it just means he’s the de facto DB coach.

Scott and Golding have formed a partnership over the years. Scott’s from Houston and has coached in the state. He makes a lot of sense for the position. However, everything we’ve heard regarding the duo is speculation.

Try as we might, we haven’t heard anything recent on Raymond or Ansley.

24/7:

I’ve been told there have been substantial conversations between Tosh Lupoi and Texas. From what I know, if he wants a job there’s an opening here from him. He and Sark are close but I’ve been told it is not for any play calling duties on defense. As I reported last week, Lupoi really wants to come back as a DC and play caller to get back on track towards being a head coach.

One school to watch out for is Oregon. The Ducks have a DC opening and head coach Mario Cristobal is also close with Lupoi. Lupoi also has family in the Pacific Northwest so Oregon would be very intriguing. If Cristobal offers him play calling duties that could be a wrap.

I’m told he’s still mulling over options.

A couple notes:

1- There is a growing feeling from a few boards that WR coach Andre Coleman likely will be retained. I'm not 100% sure whether this will be as an on the field coach or as an analysis.

2- Inside Texas is saying the door isn't completely closed with Ewers.

3- Expect pretty much the entire coaching staff to be finished up and named by the end of the week.

4- LJ Johnson's recruitment may have swung back in favor of Aggy, per IT. He should be enrolling somewhere by 1/19. So this will be over shortly.

Per 24/7, it's looking like Ash may be headed to Florida. However, he has not been told anything official from Texas and still remains a candidate at DC.

Pretty much, no one knows anything about the DC.

I just couldn't do it anymore with Herman and the stupefying losses.

It's a small miracle Texas held on to Sanders. He could be the best TE since Finley or a first round pick DE. It's really up to the new staff. The 2021 class ain't great, but there could be some nice pieces.

yes, the last year was especially tough with Herman. The losses were bad, but when all the top recruits left, that was even worse for me.

And you are right about Sanders. I’ve watched him a lot (got a grandson on the Ryan team) and he is a good guy besides being a top talent. Really looking forward to what Sark can do with him.

As stated above his buyout might be an issue. I think he needs a few more skins on the wall to actually get a gig at a big time program, but then what do i know.

New Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has identified Alabama tight ends/special teams coach Jeff Banks as a must-have target for his new staff and the Longhorns could be on the verge of adding one of the most impactful recruiters in the nation.

Multiple sources with knowledge of Banks' situation at Alabama believe that it would take a significant increase from the $700,000+ per year he's already making at Alabama.

While a specific amount of the offer is unknown, we were told that it is believed to be substantial.

There's a sense behind the scenes that Banks could be on the cusp of accepting the offer as of Wednesday night.

Turns out Lanning and Sark have the same agent
And apparently this made negotiating somewhat easier
So it sounds like Sark has his guy
Quite the staff he is putting together

They played this season, Alabama hung 41 on them but here is an article from PFF about what Georgia did
https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-film-room-georgias-defense-dominates-and-alabama-still-scored-41-points

In terms of modern defensive stats, they were #12 in DFEI this season and were #3 in 2019. Tops in the SEC

And he obviously must have impressed Sark

I hope UT concentrates on the Westlake QB and lets Ewers go freeze through the Ohio winters. Klubnik seems to be a better athlete with more versatility and escape capability and just seems to carry himself really well. Ewers and southlake did not handle the defensive pressure all that well although he did throw some nice balls and also some not so nice.. Fun game to watch.

Ewers is still number 1 on the big board. Klubnik will be a baller no doubt. Westlake’s defense is number one in the state and allows only 5 point per game this year, so I wouldn’t put all of Southlakes issues on the QB.

From OrangeBloods

Our Rivals partner BamaInsider.com is reporting that Steve Sarkisian has made a substantial financial offer to Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding and that Alabama head coach Nick Saban is fighting to keep him.

Orangebloods reported going into the weekend that Golding was front and center in Sarkisian's plans and now we'll wait to see what Golding decides to do.

One source with knowledge of the situation felt good about UT's positioning as of last night.

We'll keep you posted.

Obviously Ewers throws a beautiful ball and with protection is deadly, but it looks to me like Klubnik is faster and maybe can escape pressure better and do more than pass if needed. Both should have a very good future. Do they play next year or just chance meeting in playoffs. What a fun game to watch.

Ewers is a very good runner, he is not what I would call Colt McCoy good, but he can run when needed. This however is not his strength.

Ewers can make every throw on the tree. He makes great decisions, and his biggest asset is his incredibly quick release. He is right up there with Trevor Lawrence as a passer.

He also threw two picks.

I wasn't concerned about that because he was facing one of the best defenses in the state and if you watched the game, he had zero time to throw the ball most every time he dropped back. It's still a team game and he needs help from the oline to do his job.

Sounds like Texas.Every QB needs protection some more than others. Two picks to meis saying did not protect the ball.
Next season will tell then a third QB might be better time tells.

Here are his defensive ranks using FEI and SP

2010: 2nd (FEI), 6th (SP)
2011: 24th, 15th
2912: 19th, 19th
2013: 68th, 58th
2014 (hired by UW): 23rd, 31st
2015: 5th, 27th
2016: 6th, 4th
2017: 14th, 13th
2018: 8th, 4th
2019: 16th, 24th
2020: 65th, 10th (just 4g total)

They only played 4 games in 2020 and were missing many defenders to covid-related stuff in the last game which skewed those stats

Washington played Alabama in the playoffs in 2016
Bama's offense was the usual unit full of 5-stars unit (this was the 13-0 team with Hurts at QB and Lane Kiffin as OC)
Bama won 24-7 by scoring off UW turnovers, including a pick-6. The Wash defense gave them fits
At the time Sarkisian was an Offensive Analyst and interim OC for Alabama -- I guess he remembered that defense

Edge rusher Garfield Lawrence from Tyler getting CBs to Texas
https://247sports.com/Player/Garfield-Lawrence-46094670/

Here is what Gerry Hamilton wrote about him --

"Lawrence, who I met at a satellite camp in Kilgore two years ago, was a young man with a death gripe handshake, that looked you in the eyes. The gangly tight end/OLB always had the frame, he just needed time. Former HC Kurt Traylor once said, “he could be a star with the right development and growth.” Traylor is looking pretty smart today. This recruitment won’t last very long if Texas really wants him."

Texas needs to bring in about 5 offensive linemen in the 2022 cycle. They should have done it in the 21 cycle but was terrible at it. Now they need to rely on the transfer portal and maybe pick up a JC transfer or two. Out of all the positions on this team Oline is the most devoid of talent. Second on that list is DE. However with the coming class there is a couple of guys that can give relief I'd still like to see a transfer or 2 to get those numbers up as well.

Eastexhorn

With Tyler in portal it leaves 12 OL not seniors that might return. A little over two depth. Hopefly can get some grad transfers Horns has not had much luck with JC players recently. Maybe beat out Stanford for Uke seeif new coaches are better than last ten years of coach recruiting.

Next year will give a better idea as new bunch got a late start.
