I came real close yesterday to...."come on guys, give the kid a break"....to a couble cops hassling some kid on a bike. But my size does intimidate people so I didn't.

One of those obscure old blues cats that should have done more.

I'm just your basic intellectual More like intellectually inferior. Its obvious you can't carry a normal well adjusted conversation without resorting to this shtick of yours where you tear down a thread to cover for the reality that you can't contribute in any meaningful way. No doubt you're a failure in so many ways on a real world level. That's why you come here and act out like a fucking child. Its pathetic and only serves to barely prop up your fragile misguided ego and desperate need for attention.

If you were an intellect you'd at the very least be able to reconcile the debate being made against your stance and formulate some kind of response. But you're not and you can't so you just keep repeating yourself to avoid the harsh truth that you really don't understand anything.

If you never posted again...no one would care...and that kills you. So you just keep spewing shit for self validation.

Why act like I'm the only oner who thinks the idea of all life evolving from some fish is stupid?Part of what makes you look like such an enormous moron is that you don't seem to grasp the concept of macro and micro evolution and its place in this debate. So right on cue like most idiots you reduce the counter argument down to a simple non starter and attempt to make that the assertion which you're fighting against. Typical move from someone completely out of intellectual firepower.

My life is just fine fucker, I'm not the one entering threds to just bug the grown ups, that's you prick.I doubt your life is fine. You're probably outcast by your peers and have few friends. I'm sure the few you have are even worse than you are. You certainly aren't built to hang out with anyone smarter than yourself...your ego is easily intimidated. The fact that you even mention "grown ups" shows how badly you want others to think of you as one.

Evolution does not take millions of years. It's evident in deer herd management. If you kill all the big antler deer, and leave the scrubs to reproduce, eventually all your deer will be scrubs. If that happens on a world scale, you have forced an evolution in deer antlers, there would be no more monster bucks. You'd have to genetically alter one to make it happen. 200 years later, people would think an 8 point 20" spread is a monster, and 20,000 years from now folks would marvel at the size of the antlers from deer prior to the "event". That's evolution by selective breeding. The fact that genes exist is evidence enough of evolution, that it can happen. Sometimes it's the natural conditions that allows specific traits to survive and reproduce and survive reproduction. Sometimes it's a single event that alters the path of evolution, but either way the animal was evolving.

Because the Earth can't be "500 Million" years old.

Because there aren't any 1\2 FISH 1/2 human fossils

Because there isn't goldfish DNA our bodies

that's just three out of 100s of reasons why.

1. No it is like 4.5 billion.
2. That would negate evolution altogether if there was half fish half man. This is what I mean; your knowledge in this area is heavily lacking.
3. Because fish and humans are not closely related. We would expect similar dna to chimps though. AND WE DO.

NEW FLIES IN APPLE TREES SET OFF WASP EVOLUTION

Recent evolutionary changes—such as a new species of fruit fly—have an almost domino effect on a number of species, find researchers.

The finding offers hard data to support the concept that biodiversity feeds upon itself.

The study, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, follows up work done by the team several years ago that found changes in mating habits resulted not only in a new species of fruit fly, but also led to a new species of the parasitic wasps that prey on them.

“The new study extends the earlier work by showing that new fruit fly species provide suitable habitat not just for one new parasitoid species, but for multiple new species,” says James Smith, an entomologist and professor in Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University.

The fruit flies in question evolved into new species when they began laying their eggs and mating on apple trees, as opposed to their native hawthorn tree hosts. Three different kinds of parasitoid wasps were collected from a number of different fly host plant environments in the wild.

Analyses in the lab showed that all three of the different kinds of wasps had diverged from others of the same kind, both genetically and with respect to host-associated physiology and behavior.

It's as if they are trying to imitate a rap group, they are trying too hard. Little actual talent there.

Not stuck in any era/decade.

Also have these mixes...

Early Rockabilly...Elvis, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Burnette and others
Orgins of the Delta Blues...Charley Patton, Son House, Tommy Johnson, Ishman Bracey and others
Texas Blues...Blind Lemon Jefferson, Texas Alexander, Ramblin' Thomas, Little Hat Jones and others
Blues Queens...Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Memphis Minnie and others
Oldies...The Crows, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard and others
60's..The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Stones, The Doors and others
Classic Country....Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Ernest Tuff, Patsy Cline and others
Hicks...Doc Boggs, Frank Hutchison, Hayes Shepard, Dick Justice and others
White Man Blues....Jimmie Rodgers, SRV, John Hammond, Walter Trout and others

And on and on and on...........

I have more music in my Fortress of Solitude than most radio stations, and I'm dead serious. Without question more variety.

Who has ever heard of...

Freezone...who recorded but one song, yep, just one song as did Jim Thompkins. Why? Who knows about...Bo Jones, Ollie Ross, Leola Wilson, Pigmeat Terry, Kid Stormy Weather, New Orleans Willie Jackson, Sparkplug Smith, Kid Prince Moore...?

And, this sort of thing happens a lot to me.

About a month ago I start thinking about this weird animated movie I saw way back in the day called...Wizards. Hadn't seen it since. Yep, it was on tv about a week later.

Hmmm?

I saw The Sword and the Dragon around 1960, it was as if it had never existed, I'd never see it again. Well guess what movie Hollywood is going to rework in HD?

high in the air
when she pulled up
in a bright red Corvair

she smiled and said
hop in
I looked her over
and had to grin

she had it all
and it was plain to see
I 'm guessing she stood
about six foot three

we drove on
down the line
listeniing to some vintage
Patsy Cline

just outside of Dallas
we stopped to get some gas
I gotta tell ya
she had an amazing ass

we ended up in a trailor park
in El Paso
as far as the ending goes
I think ya know

said she had to go
she couldn't take
my cheatin' n' lyin' any mo

so she packed her bags
bummed a cigarette and a light
then walked out my door
and into the night

now I walk the floor
and weep and moan
an historic meltdown
as I stare out the window
and listen for the phone

Is it time to start treating the Mulsims like Hitler did the Jews? Just think how much better off this world would be if they didn't exist.

Save all that talk about the crusades and once upon a time, ok? These freaks think all that old primititive shit applies to todays world. Too stupid to realize all that violence was because of the times.

USa doesnt need to treat muslims like hitler did to the jew-ish. That would be small thinking. If Usa and Avante want eradication type shit, then holy christ, why not treat muslims like US Christians dealt with Native Americans which includes Mexicans. Hitler jacked off to USA and how efficiently the Christian American Occupiers genocided the indigenous.

It's been a long long time since we've seen a speedy white running back in division I football. I did think Sam McCuffie was going to be that guy, nope! That guy is however Stanfords Christian McCaffery the grandson of the great sprinter Dave Sime, a former WR holder and a 100m silver medalist at the 60 Olympics in the 100m.

McCaffery was a 10.75 sprinter in HS, but I'm sure he's faster than that now.

There has never been a "great" white speed back in the NFL. I'm talking 9.4/10.30 type stuff. Hugh "The King" McElhenny, "Jaguar" Jon Arnett had "good" speed, but not great speed. Dickie Post and Danny Woodhead more quick than fast.

There was SMU's John Roderick a legit 9.3 cat (world class) but he was a bust for some reason.

What did happen to.....

The run at 2:30 is tiotally ridiculous.

7.Mel Patton...histories first 9.3/USC
8.Hal Davis...ruled the early 40's, but because of the war no Olympics to win/Cal

"B"

4.Marty Krulee...SDS
5.John Roderick...SMU

How about white "speed" receivers? Yep, we have had a few.

Don Hutson the first great receiver was a 9.8 sprinter out of Alabama.

Don Maynard had some jets, he was Namath's main man.

Roger Carr with the Colts could motor.

Lance Alworth was a sprinter while at Arkansas.

Oiler Bill Groman was a 9.5 man.

Don Beebe could cook.

Tim Dwight was a 10.33 cat while at Iowa.

Sonny Randle, the old St. Louis Cardinal had 9.7 jets.

Hmmmm? That's about it.

why not muhammad

Do you know his story, his origins? He was just a mortal man who pulled off the biggest hoax of all time....Islam. Having to use the Angel Gabriel should have given it away.

But. Mohammd is one of the most important people who ever walked the earth, like Hitler his existance made a huge impact on this world. Between the two of them they were responsible for more deaths than any others.

I recommend ya read about the life and times of Mohammd before trying to talk about things ya don't know about. I have a six CD set about his life and the origins of Islam.

I do find it funny when we hear/read "radical" Islam, all that violence is Islam. The Koran is choked full of violence to non believers/infidels.

As of right now you know..0..about Mohammad and Islam. Save the bullshit, just admit it and then bone up on it if ya realy wanna talk with me about it, ok?

Fu Manchu...Sax Rohmer
Conan, King Kull, Solomon Kane.....Robert E. Howard
Jack Reacher....Lee Child
Moby Dick...Melville....what??
Alex Cross...James Patterson
Psycho...Robert Bloch
Dave Robicheaux...James Lee Burke
The Lord of the Rings...J.R.Tolkien
Gone With The Wind...Margaret Mitchell
East of Eden, Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, Canery Row....John Steinbeck
2001....Arthur C. Clarke
1984...George Orwell
A Boy and His Dog...Harlan Ellison

Are you kidding me? Have you forgotten the thread that got all this..pedo...silliness started? I posted this more or less.,...

While I was there at 19-22 I had no idea about the sex slavery thing, I didn't find out about that until years later and then it pissed me off. Why weren't we told about that situation over there? That should have been done.

Being we have so many immature idiots here that became....YOU PEDO. I know, how stupid does it get. Dude, any man messing with kids is one sick mutherfucker, ya blow that fucker away, ok? No way in hell I'd touch a kid, ya got that? So stop ignoring my stance on that, got it? If I'd seen some sailor with a kid (I didn't) I 'd kicked his ass. The kid thing was pretty much found in the whorehouses not the bars in the early 70's.

As far as muslims in Ameica goes, it's time to leave for them. The religion has proven to have way too many violent followers. We can no longer play a guessiing game about which ones are violent. So they either drop Islam or go someplace else. And yes some will start lashing out at them, which is what it will probably take to get them to leave. I'll back off that being a good thing, but that is where it's heading.

I realize my ability to pick ATS winners is uncanny as is my knowledge of track, blues, NCAA/NFl/AFL/CFL football, literature, and music in general but others just accept the fact I'm special/unique, why this freak fights it like he does....weird.

Let me explain something.

Those bars over there are in the business of selling drinks, ok? They hire girls to hustle drinks. She has a quota to make, once she gets that quota then she'll..."we go fucky sucky?" Then it's between you and her, if ya want her to leave before she gets that quota you have to buy her out of the bar.

Now...
What is legal age for drinking (alcohol) in the Philippines? Are they strict about it?

do stores ask for ID when young people buy beer? do you remember how old you were when you had first drink? were you at home or with friends?

Best Answer: The legal age is 18 but anybody can buy what they want especially at the informal corner stores. Maybe you might get asked for an ID at the more formal supermarkets, but generally the store owners don't care as long as they can make a sale. I know I was buying cigarettes for my Dad at 4 years old!

I was with friends when I first drank beer at around 16 years old.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now if the legal age is 18 how in the hell can a bar hire kids far younger than that to be drinking in their bars, well? Sure some of them could have been 17 but this talk of 12-16 is fucking stupid. And no man would be caught dead with a kid that young. Sneaking around like we all did to drink is a lot different than working in an establishement were it's illegal to drink under 18. And there would be some who..."what are these kids doing in here drinking"...and would have ratted out the bar owner.
So use your fucking brains ok dummies?
A store could get away with selling to minors, no way a bar could. A 12-16 year old girl sitting on a bar stool drinking, come on people just how stupid are you?
All those bars over there were loaded down with full grown women with some experience, now think people, ok? I was around 240 pounds back then, I was attracted a big well built women (for them) ok idiots?
If you're watching the debates, how could you not get the problems we are having with Islam, not Christians, it's Islam.
I get the..."everything Avante says I MUST act goofy over"....but how could anyone not see what is going on with Islamic terror? That is all that's being talked about, why? WHY?
At no time did we hear...radical Christianity....why?
it doesn't have to be one or the other. not everything is so black and white, but you have a kindergarten view of the world
the world's biggest muslim population is in Indonesia. how many indonesian islamic terorrists have we had?
then pakistan, then india, then bangladesh
iran is 7th
iraq is 11th
syria is 19th, and that's considered to be the worst right now
you know some other countries with more muslims than syria? China. Yemen. Uzbekistan. Ethiopia. Morocco.
it's so simple to say "islam is the problem" or "muslims are the problem"... and people gravitate to that talk because they prefer simple solutions, as it gives them a peace of mind. "if we just eliminate muslims, all our problems will go away!"
its the same with sports... fans will always scapegoat one person and act like he's the only problem holding everything back.
"if we just bench our QB and play the backup, we'll start winning"
"if we just fire our stupid offensive coordinator, our problem will be solved"
"if we change our starting point guard we'll be elite"
if islam was "the problem" then wouldn't the countries with the MOST muslims be the most fucked up? indonesia, pakistan, india, bangladesh... instead its syria, iraq, iran
We must have heard the words....radical Islam...a 100 times in the debates, and I have a kindergarden view of the world, hahaha!!!!!!! I own 22 books on Islam, trust me it is a major problem, if you can't see this you're a fool.
Are all blacks who play football RB's, of course not, but are all the good RB's black, well this is like that. Is most the terror we see in the world because of Islam, yes it is.
Just read the Koran, there ar over 100 verses talking about killing, burning, chopping. Death to those dreaded infidels being the message, are you saying this isn't true?
If you haven't picked up on Islam is causing the world a lot of problems right now you're dumber that I thought.
Google....The majority of Americans see Islam as the worlds most violent religion.......learn about this stuff, ok?
This is just one of a ton of articles/videos all saing the same thing more or less.
Research: Islam really is the world’s most violent religion
November 27, 2015 10:15 am By Nicolai Sennels (http://www.jihadwatch.org/author/nicolai) 76 Comments (http://www.jihadwatch.org/2015/11/research-islam-really-is-the-worlds-most-violent-religion#comments)
http://www.jihadwatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Quran-and-gun.jpg (http://www.jihadwatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Quran-and-gun.jpg)
Together with a number of research assistants, the Danish linguist Tina Magaard spent three years examining the texts of the ten largest religions. The purpose was to investigate whether any of the religions incite violence.
The conclusion (http://jyllands-posten.dk/indland/ECE5097347/Islam+er+den+mest+krigeriske+religion/) was clear: “The texts of Islam are clearly distinct from the other religions texts as they, to a higher degree, call for violence and aggression against followers of other faiths. There are also direct incitements to terror. … Moreover, in the Qur’an there are hundreds of invitations to fight against people of other faiths.”
The verses are in black and white and without mitigating context. One of the verses that deal with non-Muslims is: “So when you meet those who disbelieve, strike their necks until you have inflicted slaughter upon them.” (Qur’an 47: 4 (http://corpus.quran.com/translation.jsp?chapter=47&verse=4)).
Violent in practice
Islam is not only the world’s most violent religion in writing. A huge study (http://www.thelocal.de/20100606/27673), based on in-depth interviews with 45,000 subjects, confirms that it is also the world’s most violent religion in practice.
The study shows that Islam is the only religion in the world in which people become more violent, the stronger they believe in their religion.
Terror
The fact that Islam is the world’s most violent religion is most likely the reason why Muslims since September 11, 2001, have committed more than 27,000 deadly terrorist attacks (http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/) in the name of Islam. This corresponds to approximately 2,000 a year, or five a day.
Another fact is that the number of Muslims in the Western world is increasing dramatically and that they are becoming still more religious: 75 percent (https://www.wzb.eu/en/press-release/islamic-fundamentalism-is-widely-spread) of Muslims inside Europe think that the texts of the world’s most violent religion must be taken literally.
This is probably why 80 percent (http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2014/11/young-dutch-turks-radical-views-worry-mps-call-for-more-research.php/) of young Turks in Holland see “nothing wrong” with waging Jihad against non-Muslims. And that 27 percent (http://www.newsweek.com/16-french-citizens-support-isis-poll-finds-266795) of all young French and 14 percent (http://www.jihadwatch.org/2014/10/one-in-seven-young-britons-has-warm-feelings-for-the-islamic-state) of all young British under 25 sympathize with the genocidal terror organisation Islamic State (http://www.jihadwatch.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/ISvsQuran.png). This includes most probably the vast majority of young Muslims in these two countries.
Europe is about to face its greatest challenge ever.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~

So everyone gets it but you, why am I not surprised? Little man, why take bone up on this stuff, ok? It's real obvious you don't know shit about it.

I'm reading a book....The Stendal Raid....by Al Dempsey, it's about Hitler and the middle east back in the day, in the book there is talk of Jihad towards the British,...............this book was written in 1985. Robert E. Howards wrires about a mercenary in the Middle East back in the early 1900's named EL BORAK. There is the constant.....crazed Arabs....mentioned. These stories were written in the 30's.

Speaking of Indonesia. Everywhere we find Muslims we find an over abundnce of violence, are yu saying you really haven't noticed this?

Since 2011, the terrorist attack seems to be shifted, from targeting foreign Western interest and residents to attacking Indonesian police officers. Indonesian Police has been successfully cracking down terrorist cells in Indonesia, and as retaliation a new terrorist cell, identified as "Cirebon Cell" began targeting police officers. On 15 April 2011 a suicide bomber (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/2011_Cirebon_bombing) detonated an explosive device in a mosque in a police compound in the city of Cirebon (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Cirebon), in West Java (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/West_Java), during Friday prayer. The bomber was killed and at least 28 people were injured.[4] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-globe-4)[5] (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/#cite_note-Arnaz-5) The same cell also suspected to be involved in two more attacks in Solo (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Surakarta), a church suicide bomb on 25 September 2011, and shooting targeting police on 17 August 2012. However these attacks were not as well-prepared and high scaled as previous attacks organized by terrorist group JI.
Although the terrorist attacks seems to be reduced in both amount and scale, some terrorist hotspots such as Poso (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Poso), Central Sulawesi (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Central_Sulawesi), remains as terrorist battleground. Poso was previously marred by religious violences between Muslims and Christian in the area.

Want more?

OVERVIEW Anti-vice raids and actions against non-Muslim minorities are becoming a path to more violent jihadism in Indonesia. The 2011 suicide bombings of a police mosque in Cirebon, West Java and an evangelical church in Solo, Central Java were carried out by men who moved from using sticks and stones in the name of upholding morality and curbing “deviance” to using bombs and guns. They show how ideological and tactical lines within the radical community have blurred, meaning that counter-terrorism programs that operate on the assumption that “terrorists” are a clearly definable group distinguishable from hardline activists and religious vigilantes are bound to fail. They also mean that the government must develop a strategy, consistent with democratic values, for countering clerics who use no violence themselves but preach that it is permissible to shed the blood of infidels (kafir) or oppressors (thaghut), meaning government officials and particularly the police.

Try knowing what you're "trying" to talk about, ok? That is Indonesia, alright?

You said this....

the world's biggest muslim population is in Indonesia. how many indonesian islamic terorrists have we had?

So there ya go.

Dude, are you really unaware of the overwelming amount of violence we see from Islam? Are you blind, deaf and dumb?

How come the majority of Americans see Islam as the worlds most violent religion, well?

Ya know what I haven't read in awhile?

Avante, ya suck at betting.

Russell Wilson would be nothing without BEAST MODE.

Cum Newton.

Ha~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Since 2014, plus $3240 vs the NFL ATS.

RW looking better than ever WITHOUT Marshawn Lynch.

Cam Newton will win the 2015 MVP award, he's looking like a big kid and the NFL is his play ground.

Anyone STILL not getting it?

But my favorite one is..."is it really Islam".....are you kidding me? How much does one have to see, how many acts of Islamic terror do we need before people figure this out? Of all the stupidity out there none comes close to ..."is it really Islam?" Do these people watch the news, read a paper?

Islam, a primitive life style where many adhere to the brutality, violence of it's model, the prophet Mohammad. Sure some realize all that chop chop kill kill was about another time/place but there are millions who can't figure that out. They think Mohammad is still raiding caravans and killing/beheading all those who think he's full of shit.

Robert E. Howard who wrote Conan, King Kull, Solomon Kane also wrote about El Borak a mercenary in the middle east way back when, hell the books were written in the 30's. Howard writes about...those crazed Arabs. He knew back then.

Here we sit a lot of us excited about the NCAA bowls, the up coming NFL playoffs, some the NBA/NCAA basketball. We have a thread here about music, one about movies. Most of us well read.

What are they doing over in the Middle East right now? I have no doubts there is nobody there who can talk them old blues, Eric "The Flea" Allen, H.P.Lovecraft, Mack "The Truck" Lee Hill, Mel Patton, Otis Kline, Nat Thurmond. What do they do over there? They don't have enought interests, so they sit around doing....what?

I couldn't have cared less about the Middle East, Islam, Muslims, none of that had anything to do with me. Then I started noticing they were causing a lot of problems....why? Then here came 9/11, now I want to know just what is their problem? So I set out to educate myself on Islam.

There is no doubt of any kind the religion is all bullshit to begin with and Mohammad was a mad man. And there is no doubt there are a lot of Muslims who take all that...death to the infidels....seriously. Look at what we are seeing, how much do we need to see? You don't see the overwelming amount of violence?

All those books told it like it is, nobody lied. And I also own a 6 CD set breaking Islam totally down starting with Mohammad in the cave on the mountain with the Angel Gabriel.

you're mastery of "history" is as laughable as your anti-evolution bullshit.

OBL said he attacked WTC because of USA military's boots defiling the sacred sands of OBL's Saudi Arabia and because of USA's supporting Iraeli genocide of Palestinians. US military was in SA because of the oil.

USA also financed Saddam against Iran in the 1980s and overthrew Iran's Mossadegh in 1953, because of the oil. USA installed the Shah who oppressed Iran for 25 years until the 1979 revolution.

USA financed Muslims fighting Russians in Afghanistan in the 1980s. Those Muslims became the Taliban.

All the shit the West is getting now from Muslims is because of USA, UK, etc invading and dicking around in Muslim countries. iow, it's all pushback, all started by the USA dicking around in Muslim countries.

Since 2014 I decided ...what the hell...I will give out free $$$$... something I didn't want to do, well anyone following my ATS plays since then would have won over 3000 bucks, and all they had to do was follow my advise.

Last week I said..

Right now it's real important I head into the playoffs with house $$$$, I'm up a little over a $1000, and want to stay that way. The only play I'll step out on is Pitt - 10, they need the game vs a back up QB. Will play 110 to win 100.

I've been doing that for about 20 years now. Only some punk kid like a Blake wouldn't get it.

I used to hang out at a bar in Visalia, they had a pick um contest that I'd win every year. So one day a guy .....you ever play the point spread?...I told him ..nope! Then started thinking about it and started looking into it, I read some books on sports betting and he turned my on to his bookie and the rest is history, yep, took a beating the first couple years, then I finally figured it out, I do not lose over a season.

I could teach beating the NFL point spread. My teachers were Wayne Allyn Root and Marc Lawrence, go ahead Google who they are.

The trick is finding "spots" were one team has all the advantages from an ATS perspective. Yep, homework.

A single chance mutation about a billion years ago caused an ancient protein to evolve a new function essential for multicellularity in animals, according to new research co-led by a University of Chicago scientist. By conducting experiments on 'resurrected' ancestral proteins, the researchers shed light on the origin of a molecular process that allows animals to form and maintain organized tissues.

The study, published in the journal eLife on Jan. 7, 2016, is the first to experimentally describe a molecular mechanism involved in the evolution of multicellularity, and it establishes a paradigm for research in evolutionary cell biology and the origins of complex life.

"Our experiments show how biological complexity can evolve though simple, high-probability genetic paths," said the study's co-senior author Joe Thornton, PhD, professor of human genetics and ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago. "Before the last common ancestor of all animals, when only single-celled organisms existed on Earth, just one tiny change in DNA sequence caused a protein to switch from its primordial role as an enzyme to a new function that became essential to organize multicellular structures."

Few events in the history of life on Earth are as significant as the evolution of multicellular animals from single-celled ancestors. Multicellularity depends on a suite of cellular interactions and molecular functions, but almost nothing is known about how those functions evolved.

Thornton and his colleagues focused on a process called mitotic spindle orientation. To form and maintain organized tissues, cells must orient the direction in which they divide relative to their neighbors. In the flat tissues that line organs, for example, cells divide within the plane of the tissue; otherwise, malformations and cancer can result. Cells accomplish this through a structure called the mitotic spindle -- a network of protein filaments that pulls freshly duplicated chromosomes to opposite ends of the cell before it splits into two.

In cells from a broad range of animal species, the spindle is rotated relative to surrounding cells by a protein scaffold known as the guanylate kinase protein interaction domain (GK-PID). It acts as a kind of molecular carabiner by binding to two different partner molecules: an 'anchor' protein on the inside of the cell membrane that indicates the position of adjacent cells and a motor protein that pulls on mitotic spindle filaments. Once hooked together by GK-PID, the motors pull the chromosomes toward the anchors, orienting new daughter cells in line with neighboring cells.

Molecular time travel

To study how GK-PID evolved its function as a spindle-orienting carabiner, Thornton and his colleagues used ancestral protein reconstruction -- a technique Thornton's group pioneered -- to experimentally retrace the evolution of genes and proteins by working backwards through the tree of life.

Graduate students Doug Anderson and Victor Hanson-Smith first used computational methods to reconstruct the evolutionary histories of GK-PID and a related enzyme known as guanylate kinase (gk). The two proteins share similarities in sequence and structure but have different functions and histories -- GK-PID is found in only animals and their closest unicellular relatives, while gk plays a fundamental role in making the components of DNA and is universal to life.

Their analysis revealed that GK-PID evolved when the gene for the gk enzyme duplicated and then began to diverge. This event occurred before animals and their closest unicellular relatives split from other single-celled organisms, roughly a billion years ago. One copy retained its original function, but the other evolved the capacity to serve as a molecular carabiner in spindle orientation.

The team reconstructed the ancient forms of gk and GK-PID to study how this transition occurred. Working backwards from hundreds of present-day species, they used sophisticated computational methods to infer ancestral genetic sequences from the time that the GK-PID first appeared. With study co-leader Ken Prehoda at the University of Oregon, the researchers chemically synthesized the ancestral genes and inserted them into bacterial and insect cells, which produced the proteins as they existed in the distant past.

The most ancient progenitor protein, which existed just before the duplication that produced GK-PID, functioned as an enzyme. But the researchers found that they could recapitulate evolution by introducing a single mutation, which switched the protein's function, abolishing its enzyme activity and conferring the ability to act as a carabiner that could bind the anchor protein.

Remarkably, when this slightly altered version of a one billion-year-old protein was inserted into cultured insect cells -- which had their present-day GK-PID proteins disabled and therefore could not carry out spindle orientation -- the cells became able to properly rotate their spindles relative to their neighbors.

"Our experiments show that the GK-PID evolved its carabiner function early, before multicellularity itself appeared," Thornton said. "That one ancient mutation yielded a wholly new molecular function, which helped set the stage for multicellular animals to eventually evolve."

What's old is new again

The team also investigated the evolution of the anchor proteins to which GK-PID attaches. Surprisingly, these proteins first appeared in the lineage leading to animals, suggesting that GK-PID gained its ability to bind to the anchor long before the anchor itself evolved.

Why would a protein evolve the ability to bind to something that wouldn't appear for millions of years? A deeper analysis of the proteins' structural biology suggested that the answer lies in a process that Thornton calls molecular exploitation, in which a new molecule (in this case the anchor) fortuitously binds an old protein (GK-PID) because it just happens to be structurally similar to the protein's original molecular partner.

The researchers found that the ancestral GK-PID bound the anchor protein in a very similar way to how the ancestral gk enzyme bound its substrate. This region could bind both partners because the key portion of the anchor protein happened to have a similar shape and pattern of electrical charges as the ancient enzyme substrate did. The crucial mutation in the ancestral gk protein exposed the binding surface without changing it, giving the anchor protein easier access.

"It's just coincidence that the two molecules look so similar," Thornton said. "But that lucky resemblance is why a simple genetic event could cause the evolution of a molecular partnership that is now essential to the biology of complex animals."

The group's findings provide the first detailed molecular explanation for the evolution of functions involved in multicellularity and complex life. Thornton points out that many key steps in the evolution of spindle orientation remain to be reconstructed, and still more questions are unanswered concerning the evolution of other functions that made multicellularity possible. The study of GK-PID now shows one way that the emerging scientific field of evolutionary cell biology might answer those questions.

"We hope that the approach we used -- reconstructing in detail the ancient history of protein functions -- can be applied to the evolution of other key cellular processes, revealing the whole picture of multicellular life evolving from single-celled ancestors," Thornton said.

Tweak in gene expression may have helped humans walk upright

Researchers have identified a change in gene expression between humans and primates that may have helped give us this edge when it comes to walking upright. And they did it by studying a tiny fish called the threespine stickleback that has evolved radically different skeletal structures to match environments around the world.

Consider the engineering marvel that is your foot. Be it hairy or homely, without its solid support you'd be hard-pressed to walk or jump normally.

Now, researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, Alabama, have identified a change in gene expression between humans and primates that may have helped give us this edge when it comes to walking upright. And they did it by studying a tiny fish called the threespine stickleback that has evolved radically different skeletal structures to match environments around the world.

"It's somewhat unusual to have a research project that spans from fish all the way to humans, but it's clear that tweaking the expression levels of molecules called bone morphogenetic proteins can result in significant changes not just in the skeletal armor of the stickleback, but also in the hind-limb development of humans and primates," said David Kingsley, PhD, professor of developmental biology at Stanford. "This change is likely part of the reason why we've evolved from having a grasping hind foot like a chimp to a weight-bearing structure that allows us to walk on two legs."

Kingsley, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, is the senior author of a paper describing the work that will be published online Jan. 7 in Cell. The lead author is former Stanford postdoctoral scholar Vahan Indjeian, PhD, now head of a research group at Imperial College London.

So there I am down at Judy's church helping them move some stuff, she was there with her mom. When in walked this little guy, his mom went to the church and was a friend of Judy's mom. So we get introduced.

When I get a chance.

Me...who is that guy (since he hugged Judy)
Judy...Barbara's son, (as if I know who Barbara is) He plays in a band.
Me...ya mind if I talk some music with him?
Judy...go ahead.

When I get a chance.

Me...so ya play in a band, what....rock?
Marty....we play the blues.
(Judy and her mom just roll their eye, it was...."oh great!"
Me...well I'll be damn, I'm kind of a blues historian.
Marty....me too, love it.
Me...cool~~~ So who is your favorite?
Marty....Blind Willie Johnson.
Me...(yep, he's the real deal)....John the Revelator.
Marty....Soul of a Man.

So we talked them old blues for about a half hour (Judy and her mom....."oh great") The guy really knew the music. Then he starts taking about playing with Kim Wilson, Mark Hummell, James Harman, Nathan James......wow!!!! I'd forgot his name, and I couldn't ask (ya know how that is). So once he left....

Me...what was his name?
Judy...Marty Dodson.

I just....well I'll be damn, ya see Marty Dodson is consdered to be one of the great blues drummers playing today.

ust as physicists comprehend the origin of the universe by observing the stars and archeologists reconstruct ancient civilizations with the artifacts found today, evolutionary biologists study the diversity of modern-day species to understand the origin of life and evolution.

In a study published in the prestigious magazine Nature, Centre for Genomic Regulation researchers Toni Gabaldón and Alexandros Pitis are shedding light on one of the most crucial milestones in the evolution of life: cells' acquisition of mitochondria.

he first living beings were single-cell organisms, predecessors of the bacteria that inhabit the world today. Those cells were quite simple but, at some point over the course of evolution, they gave way to a more complex cellular lineage: the eukaryotes, or cells with a nucleus. Eukaryotic cells have given rise to the most complex life forms existing on earth, including multicellular organisms such as animals, plants or fungi. One of the keys of this complexity can be found in mitochondria, a cellular organelle considered to be the generator of cell energy, although that is not their only role. It is believed that by acquiring mitochondria, cells were able to use more energy, facilitating qualitative leaps in their structure and organization. That is why the addition of mitochondria is considered a crucial milestone in the evolution of life.
Up until now, a number of theories have sought to explain how cells came to acquire mitochondria. Although there is consensus as to the "how" ?the first mitochondria must have been a bacterium that entered another, and remained there, becoming part of the cell? the "when" has so far been unclear. Some scientists advocated an early incorporation of mitochondria, and considered that step as the first necessary to begin advancing toward eukaryotic cells as they are known today. Other theories proposed a later inclusion of mitochondria, as a more complex host cell could favor the entry of another cell and that cell's permanence within its interior. Now, predoctoral scientist Alexandros Pitis and ICREA research professor and group leader at CRG Toni Gabaldón have clarified the matter, proposing a theory that would define the time frame for the acquisition.

They don't believe in science, and pander to evangelicals -- as a result, the Republicans remain a party of stupid

You say man evolved from an ape . . . but if we evolved from an ape, why is an ape still an ape and a person still a person?”

It’s a question often asked by religious critics of the theory of evolution. To answer it Brown University Professor Kenneth Miller reached back to expert-witness testimony he delivered in a Harrisburg courtroom a decade earlier. Miller was speaking at a three-day symposium celebrating the 10th anniversary of the December 2005 Kitzmiller decision, which dashed evangelicals’ hopes that “intelligent design” could be taught in public schools as a counter-theory to evolution.

No candidate running for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination has publically accepted the theory of evolution. Their views on the subject—from the imbecilic observations of neurosurgeon Ben Carson to the disingenuous position of Jeb Bush—are calculated to attract evangelical voters.

Speaking to a group of Seventh Day Adventists in 2011, Carson attributed evolution to the Adversary (Satan). “I personally believe that this theory that Darwin came up with was something that was encouraged by the Adversary, and it has become what is scientifically, politically correct.”

Carson intends to write a book called “The Organ of Species” to correct the errors in Darwin’s theory. “Not The Origin of Species,” he said, “the Organ of Species, and we’re going to talk about the organs of the body and how they completely refute evolution.”

In a 2007 GOP primary debate, former Arkansas governor and ordained Baptist minister Mike Huckabee dismissed the idea of common ancestry: “If anyone wants to believe that they are descendants of a primate, they are certainly welcome to do it. I don’t know how far they want to march that back.”

Rick Santorum was unequivocal in a 2008 interview with the Center for Religion in Public Life: “I think there are a lot of problems with the theory of evolution, and do believe that it is used to promote a worldview that is anti-theist, that is atheist.”

Ted Cruz doesn’t take a position on the issue, but defers to his father, a self-taught itinerant preacher. Rev. Rafael Cruz speaks at campaign events––and at a 2011 men’s prayer breakfast in Houston he described evolution as Marxist propaganda.

“There is nothing scientific about evolution,” Cruz explained. “Evolution is one of the strongest tools of Marxism because if they can convince you that you came from a monkey, it’s much easier to convince you that God does not exist.”

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie bristled when a reporter asked in 2011 if he accepted the theory of evolution. At a town hall meeting the same year, Christie described evolution as “required teaching,” but with a caveat. “If there’s a certain school district that also wants to teach creationism, that’s not something we should decide in Trenton.”

Marco Rubio refuses to address evolution, although a widely circulated quote regarding the age of the earth suggests he’s determined to keep science at arm’s length.

“I’m not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says but I think that’s a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States,” he told GQ magazine in a 2012 interview. “I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think . . . people should have the opportunity to teach them all.”

Rand Paul came close to accepting the theory of evolution. Backed into a corner in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, the Kentucky senator said: “Obviously, we evolved.” But he split the difference on how we evolved. “It’s harder to argue the contrary, that there was no God involved,” Paul said.

Carly Fiorina has said nothing in public on evolution, and the two candidates described as moderates equivocate. While running for governor of Ohio in 2009, John Kasich said he supported teaching evolution and what he called “creation science” in the state’s public schools. Asked about the Dover decision when he was governor of Florida in 2005, Jeb Bush told The Miami Herald: “I don’t think it should actually be part of the curriculum, to be honest with you. And people have different points of view and they can be discussed at school, but it does not need to be in the curriculum.”

That is, the theory that is understood to be the unifying theme of all biological science should not be a part of the curriculum.

In the end, what Christie, Bush, and Kasich propose—teaching something called “creation science” to balance what students learn about evolution—is illegal, at least according to the Kitzmiller decision and the Supreme Court decisions that inform it.

In his opinion Judge Jones referred to a problem that has nothing to do with legal precedents or the First Amendment’s separation clause. Quoting Berkeley paleontology Professor Kevin Padian, the judge wrote that confusing “students about science generally and evolution in general . . . makes students stupid.”

Dr. Carson has no problems with Newtonism. For the moment, the rules of gravity remain in place.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/jan/31/elephant-teeth-teach-about-evolution

Long ago, perhaps even before the celebrated mists of time, there was a great family of animals that lived in Africa. The story starts some 10 million years ago and then the family grew and spread out. Around three million years ago, a branch of it spilled into Europe and Asia. As the animals moved into new territories, they adapted to more northern climes. Eventually, some crossed the bridge of Beringia, migrating from north-east Asia into North America.

It sounds a familiar story. Surely this is all about our ancestors – the African origins in the Miocene, with key fossils appearing from ancient sediments in Kenya; some of this group colonising Europe and Asia; the march into the new world. But this is not the story of hominins: of australopithecines, paranthropines and Homo. This is the story of the elephantines: of mammoths, Loxodonta and Elephas.

The tale of the elephant’s tooth is somehow different, a change in behaviour clearly precedes a change in anatomy
The most striking characteristics of living elephants – trunks and tusks – had appeared in their gomphothere ancestors by 20 million years ago. For a large animal with a short neck, the trunk was an extremely useful development, allowing these proboscideans to grasp leaves and bring them to the mouth, thus providing an evolutionary advantage.

The development of a trunk and the transformation of incisors into tusks were accompanied by a change in the shape of the skull. Inside the mouth, the teeth were also changing. A short jaw left little room for a full set of molars, while the teeth needed to be able to sustain a long lifetime’s worth of heavy wear. Evolution provided a neat solution to both problems. Rather than having a whole set of premolars and molars crammed into the mouth at the same time – as in your mouth – there was just a single, large tooth occupying each side of the upper and lower jaw at any time. As this tooth wore down, another would be growing behind it, ready to slide into place when the worn-out tooth fell out, providing the animal with up to six sets of teeth in a lifetime.

It’s just possible that this type of change, originating with a change in behaviour, played an important role in human evolution. Around two million years ago, there was a large shift in body shape away from short legs, which first appears in Homo erectus. It’s likely that many of the new anatomical features, from longer legs to enlarged gluteal muscles and chunkier achilles tendons, are related to increased efficiency in running. If a group of humans began to run regularly, perhaps allowing them to hunt or scavenge more effectively, anatomical changes would follow, especially among the still-developing youngsters. Once running became an important part of behaviour, any mutations that enhanced it would be favoured. But the real source of novelty, perhaps, was that change in behaviour and not a genetic mutation.

The great proboscideans that roamed the African landscapes where our own ancestors evolved remind us that evolutionary novelty doesn’t always originate in the genes.

Random changes in behavior speed bacteria evolution

Random changes in microbes’ behavior can speed up evolution, a new study shows.

These shifts — called phenotype switches — can promote genetic mutations that help microbes better survive their environment, researchers report online January 19 at BioRxiv.org. Understanding how the microbes evolve is “particularly important for antibiotic resistance,” says study coauthor Bartlomiej Waclaw, a physicist at the University of Edinburgh.

Waclaw and colleagues used computer modeling to look at how an organism’s phenotype — in this case, its growth behavior — might influence its genetic makeup, or genotype, in an unchanging environment. The experiment could represent how bacteria replicate and evolve to reach an antibiotic-resistant state, the researchers suggest.

Are humans driving evolution in animals?

(short answer is yes)

Are humans inadvertently driving evolution in other species? Mounting evidence suggests activities such as commercial fishing, angling and hunting, along with the use of pesticides and antibiotics, are leading to dramatic evolutionary changes.
Sitting down to a roast chicken dinner doesn't seem like an obvious opportunity to consider evolution. But it is.
Think about it: those big tasty carrots, that plump, tender chicken and those handsome potatoes all differ markedly from their natural ancestors.
A wild carrot is barely more than a slightly enlarged purple tap-root and red jungle fowl certainly don't have the extravagant cleavages found on modern broiler chickens.
The intentional selection of the qualities we like (such as flavour and size) in domesticated livestock and cultivated crops has led to descendent animals and plants that differ genetically from their ancestors. This change in gene frequency is evolution, and in this case has come about by a process called artificial selection.
Natural selection is basically the same process. The difference is that instead of humans selecting individuals to breed, natural selection pressures such as predation, or the reluctance of females to mate with lower quality males, cause some individuals in a population to prosper and produce offspring while others fare poorly, leaving fewer offspring.
If the trait that caused the parents to prosper has a genetic basis, then the offspring will inherit that trait and likewise prosper, changing the frequency of genes in the population.

Mystery Extinct Cavemen Were More Diverse Than Neanderthals

A mysterious extinct branch of the human family tree that once interbred with modern humans was more genetically diverse than Neanderthals, a finding that also suggests many of these early humans called Denisovans existed in what is now southern Siberia, researchers say.

In 2008, scientists unearthed a finger bone and teeth in Denisova cave in Siberia's Altai Mountains that belonged to lost relatives now known as the Denisovans (dee-NEE-soh-vens). Analysis of DNA extracted from a finger bone from a young Denisovan girl suggested they shared a common origin with Neanderthals, but were nearly as genetically distinct from Neanderthals as Neanderthals were from living people.

A deeper understanding of extinct human lineages could shed light on modern human evolution. For instance, analysis of the Denisovan genome showed that Denisovans have contributed on the order of 5 percent of their DNA to the genomes of present-day people in Oceania, and about 0.2 percent to the genomes of Native Americans and mainland Asians. These DNA contributions not only signify interbreeding between the two groups (scientists have yet to definitively call Denisovans a separate species), but also may explain the origin of some traits of living humans.

The Origins of Religion: How Supernatural Beliefs Evolved

Despite the popular belief that science and religion (or science and the supernatural, more generally) don't quite go hand in hand, scientists have quite a lot to say about this topic — specifically, why such beliefs even exist in the first place.

The 'god faculty'

There are many theories as to how religious thought originated. But two of the most widely cited ideas have to do with how early humans interacted with their natural environment, said Kelly James Clark, a senior research fellow at the Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.

...

"On the plains of the Serengeti, it would be better to not sit around and reflect. People who took their time got selected out," Clark told Live Science. Humans who survived to procreate were those who had developed what evolutionary scientists call a hypersensitive agency-detecting device, or HADD, he said.

In short, HADD is the mechanism that lets humans perceive that many things have "agency," or the ability to act of their own accord. This understanding of how the world worked facilitated the rapid decision-making process that humans had to go through when they heard a rustling in the grass. (Lions act of their own accord. Better run.)

But in addition to helping humans make rational decisions, HADD may have planted the seeds for religious thought. In addition to attributing agency to lions, for example, humans started attributing agency to things that really didn't have agency at all.

You might think that raindrops aren't agents," Clark said. "They can't act of their own accord. They just fall. And clouds just form; they're not things that can act. But what human beings have done is to think that clouds are agents. They think [clouds] can act," Clark said of early humans.

And then humans took things to a whole new level. They started attributing meaning to the actions of things that weren't really acting of their own accord. For example, they thought raindrops were "acting for a purpose," Clark said.

Acting for a purpose is the basis for what evolutionary scientists call the Theory of Mind (ToM) — another idea that's often cited in discussions about the origins of religion. By attributing intention or purpose to the actions of beings that did have agency, like other people, humans stopped simply reacting as quickly as possible to the world around them — they started anticipating what other beings' actions might be and planning their own actions accordingly. (Being able to sort of get into the mind of another purposeful being is what Theory of Mind is all about.)

Rare Sperm Whale Fossils Shed Light on Mysterious Family Tree

Rare, 7-million-year-old fossils of two extinct pygmy sperm whales are helping researchers learn about the evolution of the ocean's largest toothed whale, a new study finds.

An analysis of the fossilized skulls indicates that even though they were pygmies, the newly discovered species actually had larger spermaceti, an organ that sits on top of the head and is involved in sound production and echolocation (finding an object's location via sound), than their modern-day relatives.

It's unclear why the sperm whales' spermaceti organ shrank over time — twice in the evolutionary record, according to an analysis of several fossils — but perhaps at one time, larger spermaceti were used to attract mates, said the study's lead researcher, Jorge Velez-Juarbe, a curator of marine mammals at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Caribbean fossils

The researchers found the pygmy sperm whale fossils buried in a sea cliff along the Caribbean coast of Panama in 2012 and 2013. After determining that the two unique individuals were a new species, the researchers named them Nanokogia isthmia; "Nano" from the Latin "nanus," which means dwarf, and "kogia" for the whale's genus, "Kogiid." The species name comes from the Isthmus of Panama, the strip of land where the fossils were found.

The findings have electrified the world of marine paleontology: many whales, dolphins and porpoises have comprehensive fossil records that help scientists study their evolution. But only a few fossils of sperm whales and their elusive living relatives, the pygmy and dwarf sperm whales, have been recorded, the researchers said.

Scientists demonstrate key aspect of evolutionary theory

Evolutionary theory predicts that pairs of chromosomes within asexual organisms will evolve independently of each other and become increasingly different over time in a phenomenon called the 'Meselson effect.' Researchers have demonstrated the Meselson effect for the first time in any organism at a genome-wide level, studying a parasite called Trypanosoma brucei gambiense.
While this event was first predicted almost twenty years ago, evidence for it has proved elusive.

Now, researchers from the University of Glasgow have demonstrated the Meselson effect for the first time in any organism at a genome-wide level, studying a parasite called Trypanosoma brucei gambiense (T.b. gambiense). Their findings are to be published in the journal eLife. The research was conducted at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology in the University's Institute of Biodiversity Animal Health and Comparative Medicine.

T.b. gambiense is responsible for causing African sleeping sickness in humans, leading to severe symptoms including fever, headaches, extreme fatigue, and aching muscles and joints, which do not occur until weeks or sometimes even months after infection.

These symptoms extend to neurologic problems, such as progressive confusion and personality changes, when the infection invades the central nervous system.

In order to demonstrate the Meselson effect in T.b. gambiense, the research team, led by Dr. Annette Macleod, sequenced the genomes of 85 isolates of the parasite, including multiple samples from disease focus points within Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire and Cameroon, collected over fifty years from 1952 to 2004.

The similarity of the genomes studied from these different locations, together with a lack of recombination in the evolution of the parasite, suggests that this sub-species emerged from a single individual within the last 10,000 years.

"It was around this time that livestock farming was developing in West Africa, allowing the parasite, which was originally an animal organism, to 'jump' from one species to the other via the Tsetse fly," says lead author Dr. Willie Weir.

"Since then, mutations have built up and the lack of sexual recombination in T.b. gambiense means that the two chromosomes in each pair have evolved independently of each other, demonstrating the Meselson effect."

Dr. Weir adds that the parasites' inability to recombine with each other prevents genes from being exchanged between strains. This could subsequently hamper the ability of the organism to develop resistance to multiple drugs.

The team also uncovered evidence that the parasite uses gene conversion to compensate for its lack of sex.

This mechanism essentially repairs the inferior, or mutated, copy of a gene on a chromosome by 'copying and pasting' the superior copy from the chromosome's partner. The future challenge will be to investigate the effectiveness of this mechanism in the long term, as evolutionary theory suggests that asexual organisms should eventually face extinction. If T.b. gambiense shares this fate, the major cause of African sleeping sickness will be eliminated -- although it is impossible to predict when this might happen.

Ancient protein flexibility can drive 'new' functions
Evolution of steroid receptor family's regulatory functions
Date:
January 6, 2016
Source:
Emory Health Sciences

Scientists reveal how evolutionary fine-tuning has obscured the origin of the glucocorticoid receptor's ability to adopt different shapes. It highlights how proteins that evolve 'new' functions may have had those capacities -- in some cases, for millions of years -- because of their flexibility.

https://images.sciencedaily.com/2016/01/160106215533_1_540x360.jpg
GR is part of a family of steroid receptor proteins that control cells' responses to hormones such as estrogen, testosterone and aldosterone. Our genomes contain separate genes encoding each one. Scientists think that this family evolved by gene duplication, branch by branch, from a single ancestor present in primitive vertebrates.

A mechanism by which stress hormones inhibit the immune system, which appeared to be relatively new in evolution, may actually be hundreds of millions of years old.

A protein called the glucocorticoid receptor or GR, which responds to the stress hormone cortisol, can take on two different forms to bind DNA: one for activating gene activity, and one for repressing it.

In a paper published Dec. 28 in PNAS, scientists show how evolutionary fine-tuning has obscured the origin of GR's ability to adopt different shapes.

"What this highlights is how proteins that end up evolving new functions had those capacities, because of their flexibility, at the beginning of their evolutionary history," says lead author Eric Ortlund, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry at Emory University School of Medicine.

When GR turns genes on, two protein molecules grasp each other while binding to DNA. When it turns genes off, the two protein molecules bind on opposite sides of the DNA helix, adopting a slightly different shape to do so.

The repressive mode is thought to be responsible for the inhibitory effects of cortisol and GR on the immune system. The other steroid receptor family members only bind DNA in the activating mode.

With collaborators from University of Chicago (Joe Thornton), Georgia State (Ivaylo Ivanov) and Scripps Research Institute (Douglas Kojetin), Ortlund's laboratory has been examining the structure and function of steroid receptors from organisms that are now extinct.

The researchers "resurrect" the ancient proteins through computer analysis and then synthesis. They were surprised to find that an ancestral steroid receptor -- giving rise to the modern day steroid receptors including GR (see figure) -- could bind DNA in both activating and repressing modes.

"We tested the present-day receptors first, and saw that only GR, out of the five steroid receptors, had the ability to bind DNA repressively," says lead author Will Hudson, PhD, a former Molecular and Systems Pharmacology graduate student at Emory. "So we presumed that this distinctive function of GR's must have been a relatively recent development in the course of evolution."

"Instead, it looks like GR's repressive DNA binding activity goes way back, and that subsequent mutations shut that activity off in other family members besides GR," Ortlund says.

Additional investigation showed that the mutations that squelched steroid family members' ability to bind DNA repressively didn't affect the part of the protein that directly contacts the DNA. Rather, they affected its flexibility and its ability to adopt different shapes.

"This adds to the evidence that the ability of ancestral proteins to access different conformations, and not structural stability, is important for their potential to evolve new functions," Ortlund says.

I'm sitting here looking at the Christmas tree, and all the little Christmas whatevers around the house and think about what do stupid ass atheists do this time of year, it must suck. Yes I don't buy into the Biblical account of what happened but somehing did so Christmas will work. I have no problems using Jesus as that MasterDesigner, that sure beats the hell out of....bah humbug.

Which scripture says sitting around admiring or looking at a tree adorned with shiny decorations and gifts under it is ANY part of christmas whatsoever?

I love my wife but what does giving her candy/roses have to do with anything? We all get older every year, what does a cake and candles have to do with it? Ok, we got our independance.....sparklers?????? What do hiding eggs have to do with Easter?

Need I go on?

There is no doubt the Bible is right there with Greek, Roman etc mythology. Ya know...

Jupiter
Hercules
Apollo
Mars
Saturn
Neptune
Oisis
Zeus
Aphrodite
Loki
Venus
Mercury
Hermes
Thor

It's just....

Samson
David
Goliath
Moses
Adam
Eve
John
Paul
Jesus
Mary
Daneil
Noah

...instead.

Gigantic load of bullshit.

I didnt think you would give scripture when it came to your tree and decorations. Many people decorate their homes with nativity scenes, im sure you are cool with that. But why are ALLL the figures White? If christians want any respect, then they need to tell people to get those statues and chunk them. Why lie about it? Christians are liars, most of all to themselves tbh. Do you find it peculiar that you are just drawn to all black topicss, you love the old slave musics (god gave them that spirit to do it like no other (SOUL) They will leave any white, brown , asian in the dust in most athletic sports because god chose the black man to be his image. Do you think the designer was any good on the dance floor? Give me examples of scripture for christmas trinkets, trees etc.

I am that rarity, a white running back/sprinter/dancer. Way too much soul for a white guy. I'm white on the outside by coal black inside and I know it. I got that rhythm.

I'm not drawn to anything because it's black, I'm drawn to who I am. It just happens to be black.

Where in the fuck did ya get all this God was black stupidity from? First off none of that happened and second off the bullshit story has him ....white.

The bible says he is black. If so-called christians want to thump and elevate themselves above any one, then the bible says Son of Man, is Black. You listed moses on there as well. Moses was black. Why? Because thats what the bible says, not my opinion, the WORD of the bible says that. So why take christians as anything other than hypocrite asshole liars. Why the need for PC? Call a liar a liar. There are Christain univeristies with scholars, bright motherfuckers. Why hasnt any of them insisted that the church be honest about the white boy they say is jesus? Why be dishonest about it? Liars will lie. Go get Judy and ask her what color Moses was. Then ask her why its ok to lie to the chosen people of god. Blacks.
