I can't say I've ever seen UT so low in recruiting rankings on Rivals. 59?

I know it's because of only 8 commits but damn. Are they gonna crack the top 25 by signing day?

I'm willing to bet they'll be in the Top 20 easy, unless they absolutely bomb and don't make a bowl.

Most of their highly-ranked targets won't be making a decision until 2016.

I'm willing to bet Texas ends up with another top 10 class.

Texas will take

1 RB probably a 4-star
2-3 Olinemen at lease one will be a 4-star
1 more WR guaranteed to be a 4-star

2 more DTs both likely to 3-star but maybe one will be 4-star by signing day.
1-2 DE both will be 4-star
2 Linebackers both will be 4-star
2-3 DBs all should be 4 star.

When it is all said and done I expect a full class of about 22 - 25 signees with 12 to 14 being 4-star kids.

Im fine with whatever if we can get football players. Hager was a 3 star and Strong is talking him up as the type of player he is looking for. Although a few more Malik types could go a long way as well. Patterson has found gems among lower rated recruits so why can't Strong and staff...

I want good teammates that are football players. I'm tired of just waving away guys like Drew Brees.

TCU will be tough to beat but I suppose this is a positive sign for Texas?

This is really good for Texas, the longer he goes the better chance Texas has of making a big impression.

Didn't he get a 26 on the ACT? That's good enough to get into any state school in the country except, maybe, Berkeley or Michigan, in some cases. Guarantee that score was reported wrong if that's the case. Unless they've changed the scoring on that test too since I last knew it -- out of 36, correct? I'm originally from the midwest and that's the only test a lot of kids take.

From what I've read, the NCAA doesn't believe it's a legit score.

Hopefully he'll enroll at a prep school for one semester, get the test score he needs and move to Austin in January '16.

The good news is he won't lose any eligibility should he go through a prep school.

If he somehow gets into UT this fall after re-taking the test, I wonder if the coaches would still try to use him.

It sounds as though Dev is taking the test next week.

Note to Devo (if you're reading this): DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT score higher than a 26 on this test or the NCAA may never let you go to college. Apparently, they don't like smarter athletes.

He's been pissed for weeks and weeks now, I know since I follow him on snapchat. However in the past week he has seemed defeated. I understand an athlete cheating isn't out of the question but having him retake the test based on pure suspicion seems completely unfair.

can you cheat on the ACT? Outside of having someone else smarter than you take the test for you or someone feeding you the answers how is it possible to cheat?

Most of the time if you know how the test works you can take it and do well.

EXAMPLE - I took the FINRA Series 7 exam a few years ago. First time I took it was was prepared but I misjudged my time and ended up running out of time for part 1. I missed on passing it by 3 pts. I retook the exam a month later, my knowledge didn't improve that much but I used better judgement in taking the exam and for both Part 1 and Part 2 I finished with over 40 minutes and I blew the test away getting an 89%. I didn't get smarter, i just understood going in what that test was and used good strategy in my test taking skills.

He can do the same. I believe he has taken the test twice now, so this third time will be the same.

Good luck to him.

And TE Andrew Beck has an unknown knee injury that will sideline him at least for the rest of fall camp.

Lol that's what the dude wanted the whole time anyway. What a f*ing mess. I cannot believe this saga. If this involved Saban or Les Miles I'd be inclined to think it was all setup to screw with us but I don't think Stoops is like that nor do I think the rivalry would "stoop" so low. Moreover, I'm pretty sure it's all just Lampkin being immature.

It's a good thing we've moved half of our team to the TE position. Recently saw that not only is former Mack Brown WR recruit Garrett Gray working at TE but also Alex De La Torre (???). Is Alex our FB? Maybe it's just a generic title for a blocking specialist at this point since the TE can line up wherever.

More power to McNeal to become a beast, I guess. Full on youth movement everywhere.

If I remember correctly, there were rumors that he was going to decommit on Signing Day and commit to Oklahoma. Apparently, it was a plan that Stoops, the OU coaching staff, and Lampkin had at some point before Signing Day. Texas discovered this plan when Norvell became a coach at Texas. Lampkin went on Twitter and dismissed these rumors and continued to talk about his commitment to Texas specially after Malik committed. When Lampkin signed with Texas, many of us dismissed this rumor since he ended up signing with Texas.

Well, now this. I believe that this is why Strong made it so difficult for Lampkin to switch to another school.

Does anyone have quotes from the paysites about this?

Looking at the schedule, I see Texas winning 6 games with swing games against OU, WVA, and Cal (I can easily see them lose all 3, but I can also see them winning 1 or 2). I think the ceiling is 8 wins with the bottom being 6. I'll split the difference and predict a 7 win regular season. I'll hold off on the bowl prediction until later.

It's really too bad we play Notre Dame first, or even early. I don't really see Notre Dame as contending in the national spotlight this year (their QB has less tosses than Swoopes and is an enormous wildcard -- he could end up like Trevor Knight, who isn't all that great). ND's offense will be fairly inept in many of the same ways ours is and their defense is missing some key figures due to injury. While they probably beat us, if we played later in the season after our freshman get going it'd be very close, maybe. As it stands now, ND is just an overrated piece of crap in the same vein as UCLA last year. UCLA was totally beatable and did not deserve any of that preseason hype. The key difference now, though, is that we play AT ND. We at least had UCLA at home and their QB got a little messed up. But anyway, it's sad we can't play those chumps later on without the deer-in-headlights look we'll undoubtedly come out of the tunnel with.

Neh, I just don't see UT going 4-0 against Okie St, KSt, Iowa St and Tech. I think 2-2 would be solid, but then you'd have to best an up and coming Cal team and WV on the road.

It's gonna be tough to hit 6, imo, but I guess well know more once the season gets going.

Fwiw, Tech will be much much better this year, either with Mahomes or Webb at QB

I'm not sure why everyone is so scared of Cal coming to town. Most analysts are saying it's a tossup game... but... yah, it's a home game and Cal just never has a ton of talent. A few guys, sure, but they're far from spreading it out in the same way Baylor/TCU do. They're probably more on the level of Tech to be honest. Pac-12 just isn't that scary right now. Sure it could be an overlooked game for us since ND plays a different style but it's not something I'm totally scared of.

Granted this was years ago (2011? 2012?) that we played Cal in a bowl game but we beat them down pretty handedly and they had a bunch of NFL caliber players. Keenan Allen was a monster in college (and pretty solid pro now too). Very different teams now, but Cal is just Cal. They can only top out so high.

Agreed I'm surprised at how low expectations are from some of the fellow posters but maybe I'm more of an optimist. I think we can contend on a better level against some of the teams people have us down as losing. TCU and Baylor I see as sure losses and I think OU and ND are toss-ups, the rest of the games I can see us winning.

I saw this -- the hype behind this guy seems really suspicious. Not only is he only 5'11 (probably shorter since they exaggerate heights), but he's from Las Vegas! What kind of high school competition do they have out there? I know Johnny f*ing Football was really short too but the dude came from the state with arguably the most competitive HS football scene. Four-star safety Christian Wallace (Sealy, Texas) was scheduled to come to Austin to watch the Longhorns practice and to speak with the coaches over the weekend. Wallace made it to Austin but didn't get to do everything that he wanted to. "To be honest I really couldn't make it to the practice," he said. "I was just chilling with some players. I had a great time with them, hanging out with Adrian Colbert, Kevin Vaccaro, and basically all of the DBs. I fit perfectly here." Wallace, the No. 11 safety in the country, named a top 5 exactly a month ago of Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Oregon State, TCU and Texas. Then at The Opening he named a top three of LSU, UT and Mississippi State. So where does Texas fit in right now? "Well Texas right now is probably my top school and the only reason why I haven't committed yet is because my parents want me to wait," he said. "I had committed to TCU and then decommitted so they just want me to take my time and not do the same thing." Wallace said he plans on committing after he takes all five of his official visits. Right now he knows he'll take one to Oregon State Mississippi State and Texas. He's not sure which UT game he'll make his official visit but he will be in Austin for the Longhorns home opener against Rice on Sept. 12.

It's a non-story, imo. The plan has always been to move him around and create mismatches.

If you're looking for a negative angle, McNeal working exclusively with the WRs now could be a sign that Norvell is worried about drops with certain guys.

Sooner or later it becomes less about football and more about doing the right thing for these young men. The “He Said — She Said” is out of control and who knows what each kid did or didn't do. One thing I can tell you is Art Briles was 100% made aware of every single action of the young man in question (From what I am told) He understood the risks and proceeded because he needed a player to rush the quarterback, and that was the message he explained back to Peterson (From what I am told.)

Lot of people talking about the number of freshmen and redshirt freshmen in the two deep. I counted only 5 on offense and 6 on defense in the two deep.

Offense has

Burt
Vahe
Williams
Heard
Rodriguez

Defense

Jefferson
Davis
Roberson
Townsend
Wheeler
Locke

Honestly it's not ideal but it isn't as bad as some would want us to believe. Biggest concern to me is two freshmen starting on the oline. Other than that I'm really liking what we have in experience and youth.

I know Ridgeway is a little knicked up but it's a little odd that Poona Ford is listed ahead of him. You'd think that if he's going to play he'd be listed as the no. 1, even if it's just a figure of speech with Poona taking a larger number of snaps. Seems really odd.

Other oddities:

- Dickson the Australian as the no. 1 punter? Wasn't he overtaken in camp by the walk-on, at least temporarily?

- No "Mack" Wide Receivers at all -- Garrett Gray (TE), Jake Oliver, Lorenzo Joe... maybe some transfer candidates since it's well known Strong doesn't like the Mack guys.

- Cameron Townsend as no. 2 Strongside Linebacker! Haven't heard anything about this guy in camp but it's good to see that he's coming along.

- No Breckyn Hager -- is he officially out for the ND game?

- Kevin Vaccaro as the no. 2 SS! Probably won't get to play much but at least he's still pushing for playing time. Another good sign that the guys are buying in, even the older ones.

Last thought: gotta wonder what the future of Fox End is going to look like since all three of those guys (Hughes, Roberson, Omenihu) are very young. That's really great and all but they all seem very talented and I'd hate for someone to transfer out. Maybe the Linebacker rumors for one of them is true? Especially if Townsend is no. 2 at Strongside LB and we haven't heard much about him.

Doesn't make a ton of sense given the info on 24/7 but McTelvin Agim is supposed to commit this weekend via Twitter and Higdon said somewhere that our new commit will announce this weekend.

Normally I'd be like this is too wack (nobody has us on Agim's radar and he's from Ark.) but given how out of the blue Dickson's commitment was... you just never know.

Of course this is wild speculation. He's probably going to Arky.

With all that's been said, this might be Christian Wallace -- but since he's probably a safety in college, I'd much much rather have Brandon Jones and/or Deontay Anderson. We seem to have a very good shot at at least one of them. Wallace seems to have wanted to commit for awhile now.

Maybe it's a flip, also? Wishful thinking but... Hudson?!

Everyone has there opinion about where the UT football program is headed but I disagree with your assessment. You state top 3 as positive movement but do you really think UT is that far behind K-state or OU? This program I believe has reached the bottom when your record indicates an average to subpar team with no future. I believe this team has very good young players and think more or on the way so therefore I believe this team well only get better each season under strong.

Texas will not beat Notre Dame, but they will beat every team on their home schedule and also win at lease 2 of their road games, likely 3.

By the end of the year, I expect to see Texas become a very salty team, Baylor is not going to like playing Texas in December.

I also really like our chances against OU, Texas will have played two top 10 teams and OSU before we step foot in Dallas, Oklahoma will have only played Tennessee in that same time span. Texas will be much more battle tested for Oklahoma than the Sooners will be for Texas.

I still expect 9 wins this year possibly 10 with a bowl victory.

I think Strong has already turned it around.............the wrong direction.

I really don't see any positive movement towards returning to the top 3 in the conference any time soon.

From an outsider's perspective, why do you think that after only one year? I'm not trying to argue, but just curious.

I can point to a few things Strong did initially that I very much disagreed with, but I can't say he's doomed.

If he manages to put up 7 or 8 wins in 2015, I'm pretty jacked up and think that's huge for things to come considering your roster is so young.

I'm not saying they're for sure winning that game, but I don't think it's laughable to say it's possible.

I can't automatically mark that one as a loss like I can with Baylor, TCU and Notre Dame.

I mean, Texas had no business being close last year and they almost won the game.

I think OU's offense will be instantly upgraded with Lincoln Riley just like TCU's was when Sonny Cumbie (TTUQB) took over as OC last year.

why, Heard looked worse than Swoopes? OL is non-existent, DL had a few good plays but was man-handled by the ND OL and none of the youngsters came to play. 3 best players on a weak team are seniors.

It was Heard's first game. And the offense moved better in one series with Heard than Swoopes. Swoopes held on to the ball too long, and instead of making reads was looking dead at the oncoming rushers.

It was unfortunate Heard was hurt on the first series. It seemed he just had the wind knocked out of him which is why they threw Swoopes back in and seemingly gave Heard less of a chance thereafter. I think the defense will improve I just believe we faced a truly superior offensive line which we knew going in. What was disheartening was seeing an offense similar to what we had last year. Poor reads from Swoopes, poor offensive line play and questionable play calling. If I was Strong I'd roll with Heard from here on out. Swoopes is still the same. He simply makes too many mistakes and holds on to the ball way too long. Even when he decides to run he's not fast enough getting to the edge and making cuts.

The constant Heard/Swoopes talk is puzzling to me. No QB can operate successfully under pressure that Swoopes was under all night. I've played and coached a lot of football and can't remember ever seeing a QB having so little time to make a decision before a defender was in his face. Tom Brady would struggle under those circumstances. Heard may be better suited to run from the constant pressure but the coaches aren't starting him for a reason (he struggled through fall and has had hard time grasping playbook).

...and when he did he plain missed them.

You said it yourself, chronic...Heard is a better option against pressure. If he's having trouble with the playbook then the offense should be adjusted to play to his strengths...a healthy does of zone read and some fast underneath stuff/screens to beat the pressure. Moving the pocket would help too.

I think Heard has a quicker release on the balls he throws. That's not something to overlook. It means the screens plays are more effective because he can get the ball in the hands of the receiver with more time and space to make a move upfield like we saw with his only pass of the night in the ND game. Plus, he is so much better of a runner than Swoopes.

Welcome to a Texas message board. Not that much different from a Spurs message board is it?

Everyone is allowed to vent frustration and I get that. We were going to lose this game no matter what. I know people wanted offensive movement, but that is a DAMN GOOD Notre Dame team that we just weren't ready to face in game one (especially in that environment). Am I frustrated about the offense? you bet your ass I am, but I temper my frustration knowing that is a top 5 team in my book. They're experienced, disciplined and GOOD. That secondary was locked on our young receiver corps and the front seven played smart. They attacked our freshman O-lineman on every play and rightfully so. Vahe and Williams will win their share of matchups, this wasn't one of them. The offensive line for ND is the best O-line we will face all year. Good teams will have one, maybe two guys that will play on Sundays. ND has a legitimate 4 guys that will be playing in the NFL and they're experienced at the college level (meaning they've worked together for a couple of years now).

I'm not trying to pump sunshine up everyone's ass, but give it a couple of games against similar talent to see where we are. We are certainly not at the level of ND, Alabama, or Ohio State. We are a fringe 2nd tier team with upside. Nothing more, nothing less.

If we played Western Illinois University and beat them 46-10 we would all be praising this team. However, that would be fools gold, imo. This game shows us that we're not at that level and we need time and development or that changes need to be examined before conference play play (coaches and players). It's a process, process, process. However, people want instant results in today's world. If we still stink after Cal, then it's time to push the alarm button.

We gave them almost zero resistance. That score could have been 56-0. We are not second tier. Second tier by my definition would put up a fight and then wear down. We were steamrolled.

List is much longer than this, but I think the concerns are warranted.

-Texas is averaging 6.6 points in their last three games and have been outscored 117-20.

-that's the fifth time under Strong that Texas has scored less than 10 points. It only happened six times from 2000-2013.

-since the beginning of last year, they've gone three-and-out 78 times for third most in the FBS. That's 33% of their possessions.

-they are currently dead last in the FBS for total offensive output after Week 1.

-there was no "up-tempo" in our new up-tempo offense.

Doesn't matter who they have at QB; Texas's O-line and D-line play has been abysmal for 4 or 5 years now. Priority #1 in recruiting should be stocking the offensive and defensive lines with as much talent as possible.
