Per Orangebloods Strong is interviewing Cal offensive coordinator Tony Franklin this morning. Sounds like a weird twist to things
24/7 saying while Strong is interviewing Franklin, he is expected to go with Gilbert.
However, Gilbert has not been offered the job yet.

Some updates per Rivals --
Denzel Okafor now 4-star (#243 overall)
Shane Buechele now #106 overall
Collin Johnson now #167 overall
Devwah Whaley went from #244 to #172
Little Boyd with a 4* bump on Rivals

This ranking crap means nothing to me, but how the hell does the top QB at the Elite 11 camp not even rank in the top 100 players in the country?
Well, you know what, I'm glad. How many times did our recruits get a bump up because they were committed to us, it seemed to always set us up for a disappointment. Now we can fly under the radar a bit.

Nahlin on Cumbie
I'll let JS hash out the drama, but real quickly, Strong was left to negotiate some things that weren't nearly as cut and dried (or approved) as people think. WTF is Mack Brown drawing a pay check for? He's in NYC, that's good enough. Send Deloss. This is the most important week of the offseason (unrelated to Spring football) and Perrin's in NYC? What's more important to the University? Further, Strong could be in Michigan midweek while still trying to get the OC situation handled but Perrin can't do both? It's utterly comical to me.
But, Strong's the easy mark right now and Perrin's untouchable. Both f***** up the Cumbie deal.

Stuff is going down.
And it's very difficult to determine where we stand overall.
It's almost like a head coach needs a PR hire. If Strong could have "leaked" word that the Cumbie situation was highly fluid and not close to anything definitive it would have been nice.
Looks like the Aggies are hoping the Offensive situation ends up like pulling Chavis out of a hat. Then QB defections might be brushed away as trivial.

Orangebloods
It is almost safe to say Tulsa’s Sterlin Gilbert will be Texas’ new offensive coordinator.
No, we are not predicting there will be a fourth candidate who will emerge on Friday. We are not expecting Texas coach Charlie Strong to withdraw his offer at any moment. From what we can tell, Gilbert should be wearing burnt orange pretty soon.
Nevertheless, this might be remembered as one of the wildest coaching searches Longhorn fans have ever seen. The moment Longhorn observers are ready to close the book and move on, it seems like another unexpected chapter is added. Reporting this story has been difficult for everyone who follows this football team – not just the Orangebloods staff – because the unexpected continually occurred.
The majority of us expected TCU’s co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie to take this job. He was viewed as the top candidate several weeks before the season ended. After Texas defeated Baylor in the season finale, we expected Strong to immediately sit down with Cumbie and have a contract hammered out very soon. Our sources believed Cumbie’s hiring could be announced this past Monday.
Strong did meet with Cumbie on Sunday, and Cumbie flew into Austin with his wife on Monday. He received a contract offer during that visit, and Cumbie was given time to decide.
As most of us know, Cumbie took his time, and eventually turned down the Longhorns on Wednesday.
However, while Cumbie was contemplating his options, Strong decided to contact his second choice – Gilbert.
Before Cumbie turned down the offer, Gilbert met with Strong on Wednesday morning. The meeting went so well, sources indicated to OB that it appeared Gilbert would be the next UT OC barring any last-minute turns. From what we were told, Gilbert believed he had the job, and was ready to become the new offensive coordinator.
That was until Cal offensive coordinator Tony Franklin interviewed for the job on Thursday in Austin.
Right now, we are still waiting for Gilbert’s deal to be finalized. Even though we believe Gilbert will eventually be named Texas’ offense coordinator, this week has taught us to wait until all the Is are dotted and Ts are crossed.
No matter what, everyone within the program understands they must win next season in order to retain their jobs. The search may not be going how many envisioned, but ultimately, Strong is conducting the most important coaching pursuit the way be prefers. If Texas wins next season, the search will be viewed like Strong’s recruiting – starts slow, but finishes strong. If the team is not successful, this search will be just one more thing used against him by his critics.
For now, we are waiting for Gilbert to sign that contract to enter the safe zone. (Richardson)
This should put an end to the OC search, on to recruiting guys.

Like 6-5 or what? It's more than the final score. We could have been 6-5 this year but it would not have mattered imo. We were so horrible at times it was flat out embarrassing. So if we go 8-3, with some lucky wins and 3 blow out suckage losses like Iowa State, Notre Dame TCU this year, all is well? Not for this fan. We must be competitive immediately and get better. Then you can pick the record it takes...

We've offered two offensive coordinators a princely sum with guaranteed contracts (allegedly) to come and turn around the offensive (one of whom coaches at fucking Tulsa) and they have both said no under inauspicious reasons? The second of which actually (according to paysite reports which have been wrong more often than not lately) accepted the job? And nobody seems to know if Charlie fucked it up, or if the Admin fucked it up? Is he not getting the support he needs for these hires? Because just fire the guy and put him out of his misery. Fault is important because we need to know who fucked this up. If it's Charlie, bye bye. If it's the Admin and the BOR, it's a systematic effort to undermine the coach you just threw your support behind. According to DJohn, we're Texas. We should able to throw money and whip anyone we want. So, it's interesting that they won't pay out what these coordinators want. If it's true, then it's pretty obvious Charlie doesn't have any support and needs to either move on or just hire some high school squad to back up Traylor.
BTW, there is no what now. Someone just fucked up an important hire (again) and right before an important recruiting weekend. The plane has crashed into the mountain.

It will get worse.
I agree that whoever is at fault needs to be held accountable. There will be time for that. Going into this weekend, having an OC in place was paramount. You bring up a very good point. Does he just hand it over to Traylor? In that case, as connected as Traylor is with Texas HS coaches, he lacks those contacts in the college ranks. Wickline has run an offense similar to what Traylor has run in HS, so does he stay? Same with Jay. At that point why not just keep him and the RB coach and play musical chairs with their titles. The only one out is Watson and you only have to hire a ST coach… Not at all the plan going into this….

Wow! Did not see that coming. Feel bad for Charlie. I really like what he is trying to build, but can't do it with this lack of support. If they want him out of here, put him out of his misery already. This will definitely hurt perception, recruiting and in the next search for a HC. SMH!!!
It's totally backwards right now.
Texas doesn't have enough of a unified front to fire him, but it seems they're giving him the gun to shoot himself in the dick.

From Nahlin at Inside Texas:
I'm in a bad spot to write but maybe now you're picking up what I've been putting down.
Texas would prefer the illusion of support rather than actually supporting Strong. The BOR is dragging its feet with Gilbert like with Cumbie. Whoever leaked the terms for Cumbie (and it wasn't Strong's camp) are gumming up negotiations with other candidates.
Basically, because the political cost of firing Strong was too great we're left with something that looks like this, something worse.
I'm in a bad place to write right now. The plan was to get with JS and write everything we know on Monday but that won't suffice. I'll talk to him in a few and he'll get something posted.
If you're blaming this on Strong you are incredibly disingenuous.
Remember how I said a parting of ways was best? That's because Strong is bad for Texas and Texas is definitely bad for Strong. I knew it would be bad but not THIS bad.
What an absolute embarrassment. The best course now, imo, is to probably part ways with Strong and shame the people who f***ed this last week up.

I think it's certainly come to light that Sumlin is no offensive guru I will give you that but the schemes used by Spavital and A&M are the same exact ones currently used at Tech. There are some minor differences sure, but for the most part they run 80% of the same playbook (if you want to even call it a playbook). They just don't work near as easily against the caliber of defenders/defensive coordinators that the SEC has. Spavital's offense would probably beast it up in the Big12 tbh. Zero defense.

Texas’ offensive coordinator search has taken place for less than a week, and it’s already devolved into a mess of cosmic proportions.
Thursday evening Horns247 reported Tulsa co-offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert (http://247sports.com/Coach/Sterlin-Gilbert-3718) had agreed to become Texas’ next offensive coordinator. According to sources close to the situation, Gilbert had been offered the job and accepted it in a verbal agreement with Strong.
The pair had a working understanding of what the parameters of the deal would look like, which is commonplace in the coaching industry. However, Thursday afternoon a FOX News affiliate in Tulsa reported Gilbert had turned down Texas' job. We at Horns247 can confirm he spurred Texas' initial offer, but cannot yet say negotiations between the two parties are finished.
As for the details, that is where Strong came up short to close the deal.
Gilbert told Strong from the outset that he wanted a three-year deal.
But, for the second time in four days, when the contract details were supposed to be sent to the candidate, only a two-year deal had been approved.
In both instances, including the contract negotiations with TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie (http://247sports.com/Coach/Sonny-Cumbie-451), Strong failed to get any prior approval from the Texas administration for a three-year deal.
Strong has had months to get prior approval of a three-year deal for candidates, and he knew the candidates wanted a three-year guarantee but never took the action necessary or even adequately communicated that to the Texas administration.
After getting further details and making sure the president of the university was OK with it, the Texas administration agreed to the three-year term and money with Gilbert today.
But by then, it appears the level of trust between Strong, Texas and Gilbert had been stretched too far.
Furthermore, Gilbert, I am told, wanted to bring his offensive line coach Matt Mattox (http://247sports.com/Coach/Matt-Mattox-2846) from Tulsa, but Mattox did not want to move and was not expected to follow Gilbert giving Gilbert even further reticence.
So for the second time in less than a week, Strong did not get a three-year deal pre-approved by his bosses until contract negotiations had nearly reached their conclusion.
In both instances with Cumbie and Gilbert, the Texas admin approved the money and the three-year contract.
Charlie Strong (http://247sports.com/Coach/Charlie-Strong-567) just couldn't close the deal.

I've watched a few games.
We are so much more fun to watch now because fundamentals are being taught. We were a good rebounding team just through athleticism. Now we get more bodies on people.
The guard play is still sketchy imo. Smart wants aggressive attack of the rim and sometimes it's just not there. And we are not a good 3 point shooting team. This game is an aberration imo based on prior games. Felix is playing way over his head tonight.
But it's now a decent watch. So glad Barnes is elsewhere.

From Matt Mattox bio on TexasSports.com,
"Prior to Coffeyville, Mattox was the offensive line/tight ends coach at Butler (Kansas) Community College. During five seasons with the school from 2007-11, he helped coach the program to four conference and NJCAA Region VI Championships. In his tenure, he coached 31 all-conference offensive linemen and six junior college All-Americans."
Can anybody verify this? It seems impossible to average 6 guys per year as All-Conference players?!

Quotes from CB Eric Cuffee after his official visit to UT (24/7):
“Overall, Texas and Texas A&M are the schools in the lead,” Cuffee said. “Austin is a great city, and UT has a great atmosphere. The business school is also an upside. A&M is more laid back, and they are in the SEC. Who wouldn’t want to play in the SEC?”
“I talked to Coach Strong a lot,” Cuffee said. “When he came to my house, we talked about pushing the decision back. He also talked to my dad and my stepmom. My mom and my two sisters came for the official, and he talked to us about the program and things like that. It was great.”
“Malik (Jefferson) was actually my host, and he was real with me,” Cuffee said. “He talked to me about the positives and negatives of not only Texas but other schools. He was real, and I appreciated that. I had a great time hanging out with him, DeShon (Elliott) and Holton (Hill).”

Update on TE Irvin Smith of New Orleans, LA after leaving Austin (24/7):
“The visit went really good,” Smith said. “I got a chance to meet all the coaches. My conversations with them went really well. It was just a good time. The players were all cool, too. Tyrone Swoopes answered a lot of my questions. It was great.”
“Coach Strong just told me that they don’t have a guy like me and that they could really use me,” Smith said. “Coach Traylor said I could have a big impact and be a part of something great at UT. Coach Gilbert talked to me about the offense and joked around. It was great.”
“I guess it changed things a little bit,” Smith said. “I don’t really want to talk too much about it right now. But Texas is a great university. The coaches and the players were all very welcoming.”

Jones held offers from numerous top programs, and chose Texas over Arizona, Louisville, Baylor, and SMU. He's currently rated as the No. 38 prospect in the country, but that ranking will improve thanks to his continued improvement and production each time he steps on the floor. Texas' 2016 class is now up to three with Jones, guard Jacob Young (https://texas.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=157404), and big man James Banks (https://texas.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=173831). By the sounds of it, Traylor was looking to leave Texas because Strong was receiving very little support and he was looking to get out of this mess. With what happened Friday night, a lot of these concerns about support towards Coach Strong have now been answered. Traylor will probably get a raise and everything will be ok.
